Peru Tours & Vacations
Peru is an indomitable land of deserts etched with ancient geoglyphs, rainforests teeming with wildlife, and soaring peaks harboring secret cities.
While many travelers come to visit one of South America 's most famous sites, the ruins of Machu Picchu , the real Peru lies within its warm, proud inhabitants â many of whom can trace their bloodlines back to the Incas . What you might not expect is the foodie bonanza  found in Lima or the adventures that await you in the ancient capital of Cusco. Whether youâre exploring the cobbled streets of Arequipa, bobbing on the floating islands of Lake Titicaca or learning about mummies in Nazca, our Peru tours will have you feeling like a modern-day Indiana Jones. Just donât forget to pack your fedora.

Best time to visit peru.
Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.
June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.
Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs
Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.
This is a stark contrast to the European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.
Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.
What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or futbol , as itâs called here.
Eating and drinking
Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether youâre in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.
Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.
The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options arenât hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.
Taste your way through Peru on our 10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.
Foods to try in Peru
Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.
Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, itâs a popular staple in the highlands.
3. Lomo saltado
This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.Â
4. Pisco sour
Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.Â
5. Coca tea
Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment
Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.
The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.
History and government
Early history.
Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.
Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.
However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins â Machu Picchu.
Recent history
Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.
New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.
Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.
Must-visit places in Peru
Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:
1. Machu Picchu
No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.
Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.
History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.
3. Sacred Valley
This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.
Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day Sacred Land of the Incas trip.
4. Amazon Jungle
Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.
Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day Amazon Jungle Short Break.
Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.
Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day Peru Encompassed tour.
6. Arequipa
The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.
7. Colca Canyon
While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.
Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day Peru Essentials tour.
8. Lake Titicaca
Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.
See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a Lake Titica Homestay.
9. Nazca Lines
The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.
10. Aguas Calientes
Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.
Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our 9 Premium Peru trip.
You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.
Things to buy in Peru
1. Alpaca wool clothing
As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.
The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.
3. Jewelery
Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.
Festivals and events in Peru
Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:
Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)
The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.Â
Mistura Culinary Festival
Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the countryâs cuisine in Lima.
Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)
Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.
Each year before Lent, cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest â and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.
Learn more about festivals in Peru.
Public holidays that may impact travel include:
Feast of St Peter and St Paul
National Independence Days
Feast of Santa Rosa de Lima
Battle of Angamos Day
All Saints Day
Feast of the Immaculate Conception
Please note that the dates of Peru's public holidays  may vary.
Highlights of Peru
However you get to Machu Picchu â whether itâs through spectacular scenery on the classic Inca Trail, through small Andes villages on the Inca Quarry Trail, or over mega mountain passes on the Choquequirao Trail â the feeling of reaching this otherworldly archaeological site will stay with you for a lifetime. This ancient 15th-century citadel is a spectacular reminder of the ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

2. Arequipa
Be dazzled by the 'White City' of Arequipa. Standing at the foot of El Misti Volcano, Arequipa vies with Cusco for the title of Peru's most attractive city. Wander the famous Plaza de Armas and while away the days in cozy cafes, admire the city's beautifully built churches and the iconic Basilica Cathedral, or learn about ancient mummies in the Andean Sanctuaries Museum.
- Premium Peru in Depth
- Premium Peru in Depth with Ica Valley
Shrouded in mystery, the Nazca Lines is one of the worldâs most intriguing archaeological sites. Thanks to dry desert conditions, these geoglyphs â which date back to the 2nd century BC â and the mummies, textiles, ceramics and other relics that have been discovered here, offer a rare glimpse into pre-Inca life. Climb to the viewing platform, or perhaps take a flight over the lines for an epic view.
- Peru Essentials
4. Puerto Maldonado
Experience the magic of the Amazon on an enthralling jungle adventure. Hike beneath cool, leafy canopies while looking for monkeys, parrots and otters; cruise along the Amazon on a canoe; learn about the healing properties of native plants with a local guide, and swap your alarm clock for the songs and croaks of toucans and other tropical birds.
- Real Peru to Bolivia
Welcome to the capital of Peru. Lima is one of the most up-and-coming foodie destinations, so the best way to explore is through your tastebuds! Be sure to sample ceviche (the countryâs national dish), washed down with a pisco sour in the bustling Barranco neighborhood. Then, stroll through the beautiful Lima Cathedral, or swing your hips to folk music at a peña (a traditional Peruvian music venue).

6. Lake Titicaca
Defy logic while standing on Lake Titicacaâs famous floating islands, which are made entirely out of reeds by the Uros people (who still live on them!). Surrounded by striking peaks on the border of Peru and Bolivia , this is one of the highest lakes in the world. Dive into learning about the history of the lake and its communities, or simply enjoy the bliss of being immersed in nature.
- Lake Titicaca Homestay
Cusco is South America's oldest continuously inhabited city and was the home of the Inca for two centuries before the Spanish arrived. Today, itâs a fascinating combination of both cultures. Tour the Coricancha Temple, wander the World Heritage-listed Cusco Cathedral, peruse the colorful San Pedro market, or do the incredible Inkilltambo trek on the cityâs outskirts.

8. Sacred Valley
Treasured for its climate and fertile land, Sacred Valley has long been the main food source in the high Andes. Itâs also home to the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, another site that will show you how incredible the Inca civilization was. Take part in an ancient cooking ritual known as pachamanca with the Chichubamba community; do a traditional chocolate and corn beer workshop; or climb the steep terraces to Ollantaytambo where sweeping views over the valley await.

Peru travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Do I need a visa to travel to Peru?
Peru has visa-free travel agreements with most countries, and foreign nationals including those from the United Kingdom , United States, New Zealand  and Canada  do not require a visa for tourism purposes. Eligible foreign nationals will be issued a free visitor permit in their passport upon arrival.
The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.Â

Is tipping customary in Peru?
While tipping isn't mandatory in Peru, it's customary to add spare change or a small amount to restaurant bills. Although most restaurants and bars may already include a 10% service charge within the bill, feel free to add more if the service was good. Taxi drivers generally don't expect tips.
What is the internet access like in Peru?
Internet can be accessed at hotels, restaurants and cafes in large cities, but it can be more limited in rural and remote areas.
Can I use my cell phone while in Peru?
Cell phone coverage is generally good in Peruâs cities, but may not be available in more remote and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home. You could also buy a local SIM card when you arrive.
What's the weather like in Peru?
The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this South American  country.Â
What to wear in Peru
Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good idea for hot weather.
What are the toilets like in Peru?
Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. Itâs a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if traveling on the Inca Trail.Â
Can I drink the tap water in Peru?
Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Peru . I t's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating . Your local leader will be able to help you find filtered water, and for environmental reasons, we suggest filling a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic bottles.
Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?
Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Expect to pay cash when dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors.Â
What is ATM access like in Peru?
ATMs can be found in most of Peru's major cities and tourist areas. ATMs are far less common in rural areas and small villages so have enough cash to cover purchases when traveling away from the larger cities.
Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Peru?
No vaccines are required in order to enter Peru but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.
Recommended travel vaccines for Peru:
1. Hepatitis A (transmitted through contaminated water) 2. Typhoid (transmitted through contaminated water) 3. Yellow Fever (transmitted by mosquitos): This vaccination is recommended if youâre visiting Puno or the Amazon. Some countries require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry after visiting Peru. Do your research before leaving home to see if you require this vaccine.

- Jungle Lodge
Stay close to the wildlife action in a lodge located within the leafy wilds of the awesome Amazon Jungle.
Camping along the Inca Trail is one of the world's most sought-after travel experiences. Bond with new friends over delicious local food and rest up before another day of trekking.
What kinds of transport will be used in Peru?
Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are much more fun.
Pedal along Limaâs incredible coastline, making your way through local areas and go on a cycling adventure to the epic Sacred Valley.
Spot exotic flowers, birds and mammals while enjoying a canoe ride down the mighty Amazon River.
Everyone gets a window seat while riding on the Vistadome train. The clear roof and windows allow maximum viewing for all.
Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?
Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. Itâs important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.
We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication. Â
Is Peru a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?
While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is, in fact, the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQIA+ rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community donât publicly identify themselves, and generally, Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a âdonât-ask-donât-tellâ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQIA+ travelers, itâs advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.Â
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.
Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.
Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence. Â
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?
Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Whether youâre a seasoned traveler or youâre about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and weâll take care of the rest.

Peru Tours and Trips 2024/2025
Home to the Peru Amazon rainforest, a sprawling coastline, and Andes mountains that seem to reach the heavens, Peru is a dream destination for nature lovers. It is a hiker’s paradise, with plenty of jaw-dropping trekking and hiking routes. Peru is as mysterious as its landmarks. It finds its way into most travelers’ wish lists for one major reason – Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. They say that the moment you see Machu Picchu for the first time from that historic trail, you suddenly realize just how rewarding traveling can be, and tend to re-discover a long-lost part of your soul.

Peru - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips
You might only know about Machu Picchu , but the fabled city is just the beginning. Peru was once home to a thriving pre-Columbian civilization that dominated the region before the Spanish. The Incas were responsible for creating some of the most beautiful archaeological wonders, combining striking architecture on the land of great natural beauty. To this day, Peru retains its alluring and enchanting features that were carved by the ancient Incas.
Tour Highlights
- Hike the Inca Trail , or its other famous alternative routes like the Lares Trek or Salkantey Trek .
- Visit Machu Pichhu
- Go sandboarding in the Peruvian desert
- Look for macaws in the Amazon jungle
- Explore the deep canyons of Colca
- Visit the floating islands of Lake Titicaca
- Trek the Cordillera Blanca, the highest range of the Peruvian Andes
Travel Tips
- Machu Picchu can become very crowded during high season. Beat the crowds by staying nearer the site the night before your visit, and be sure to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
- Stores often shut down for the afternoon siesta, so always plan your meals in advance.
- It's advisable to not drink the tap water. Many hotels provide bottled water, which should also be used for brushing your teeth.
- Altitude sickness can be a real issue for some people visiting Peru. Try combatting it with coca leaf tea, a Peruvian remedy that is readily available across the country. Chewing the leaves can have the same effect.
- On a holiday to Peru, don't skip a visit to Lima . Peru's largest city is often overlooked for hotspot tourist destinations but is full of great food and interesting museums that you'll regret missing out on.
- Always carry cash when travelling through Peru as many shops will not accept credit cards.
Peru has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Peru before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru, do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.

Constructed over 500 years ago by the Incas, the full trail winds its way from Chile to Peru for 40,000 kilometers, passing through forested valleys, historic Inca ruins, and ancient archaeological sites. Begin your trek in the old capital of Cusco and make your way through the Sacred Valley to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. Finally, head up to the Sun Gate overlooking the magnificent Machu Picchu. The best time to hike the Inca Trail and visit Machu Picchu is between July and August in the dry season.
- Travel to the heart of the Peruvian Amazon: Exotic, wild, and mysterious, the Amazon jungle has lured intrepid travelers into its untamed world for centuries. Take a short trip into the jungle from Puerto Maldonado and cruise down the Amazon in a canoe, searching for rare giant otters and caimans. Hop on a riverboat in Lima and head down the Amazon River, exploring Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, spotting unusual wildlife like pink dolphins, sloths, and brightly colored toucans. The best time to venture into the Peruvian Amazon is from May to September when wildlife congregates on the riverbanks to drink.
- Relish the colonial architecture in Lima: The dark days of the conquistadors may have left an indelible mark on Peru’s history, but Spain’s long colonial rule has also left magnificent architectural gems. From lavish presidential palaces to beautiful monasteries, Lima has its fair share of noteworthy architectural sights. Stroll around the checkerboard streets of Lima and take in the grand patios, ornate arches, elegant courtyards, and beautifully sculptured façades of age-old buildings. Head to the Plaza de Armas to see the Archbishop’s Palace and the Cathedral and the Sagrario Chapel. Explore the beautifully preserved San Francisco Convent with its famous catacombs. Wander around the city on your own or join one of our guided tours where an expert in colonial architecture will lead you through the intricate history of Lima’s colonial buildings.

Tours in Peru - Questions and Answers
The best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September. Corresponding with the dry season, temperatures in the country at this time hover between 16°C to 22°C. But more importantly, traveling to Peru during this time means that there is little fear of getting caught in the country’s torrential monsoon. Another less popular but still good time to visit Peru is between October and December. A shoulder period between dry and monsoon seasons, the climate during this time of year is generally fine, although skies are cloudier and you might have to dodge the odd shower. The wettest months are January and February. It is still possible to visit destinations such as Lake Titicaca during the rainy season, but the Inca Trail is closed for travelers. Find more information here .
Given its wealth of attractions, there are many reasons why you should consider Peru trips that last between ten days and two weeks . This will give you enough time to see top-rated sites, such as Manu National Park, while also discovering the country’s history and culture in more far-flung and as-yet-unknown destinations. You can still take in a number of attractions even if you can only spare one week in Peru , however, the time constraint would mean that you will have to limit your exploration to a destination or two. For a more detailed rundown, check out our travel guide on how many days to spend in Peru .
Personal contact is an important part of Peruvian culture. Not only do Peruvians tend to stand closer to each other than you might at home, but physical contact (especially on one’s arms and back) is also common. You should avoid the desire to step away, as this is considered offensive. Greetings are important, with handshakes along with a few words of greeting being common. Give the elderly your respect if you are young and leave your seat on public transportation for them.
If you live close to sea level, then you will realize what a significant effect higher elevations can have on your body upon arriving in Cusco. Doctors recommend at least two days of acclimatization before considering any strenuous activities, such as going for the popular two or four-day hikes to Machu Picchu. A nice way to spend this time would be by exploring the historic center of Lima or taking one of the many less-demanding day hikes that are available in the country. If you plan on trekking, you can read our article on the ultimate trekking guide in Peru .
You should ensure you are up to date with any vaccinations that are standard in your home country, such as those providing protection against tetanus and measles. A medical professional may suggest boosters for these vaccinations. Other diseases they may suggest vaccinations for are hepatitis B, diphtheria, and rabies, all of which are potentially deadly. Yellow fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a risk in the country’s east. There is a risk of malaria in the country’s northeast, around Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. Since there is currently no vaccination against this disease, prophylactic drugs are recommended. Find more information here .
Peru is not expensive for travelers and we recommend it as a top pick for visitors on a budget . Most travelers can get by on USD 30 to USD 40 per day, including transport, accommodation, and food. Tackling the Inca Trail and exploring Machu Picchu are must-do attractions but also relatively costly. ATMs are the quickest way to withdraw neuvos soles, as the country’s currency is called, on the road and visa cards are easily accepted. Many ATMs have an English language option, too. They can be found in some airports, inside banks, and as stand-alone units in major towns and cities. If you are looking for other destinations to visit on a budget, find more information here .
Spanish is the most-spoken European language in Peru, alongside several local languages like Quechan and Aymara. Those involved in the tourism industry and those in popular destinations such as Lima and Cusco will speak some English, while guides leading tours for English-speaking travelers will have a good hold of the language. However, knowing a few words of Spanish is always useful.

The best time to visit peru, how to prepare for your trip to peru, plan your perfect peru tour in 5 minutes.
Peru is typically a safe place to visit, but like with any location, tourists should use caution to protect themselves. It’s crucial to be attentive and take precautions like avoiding walking alone at night, keeping valuables secure, and being aware of common scams because crime, including petty theft and scams, can occur in tourist areas.
It’s also a good idea to research your destination and remain up to date on any travel advisories, as some areas of Peru, especially isolated ones, may have safety issues due to political or social upheaval.
The official language of Peru is Spanish. Donât worry, youâll get along fine if you donât speak any Spanish, as many people speak English in the tourist regions.
This depends on how much time you have available. We highly recommend to come to Peru for at least 5-7 days so that you can discover the must-visit sites, such as Cusco, Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley and more
Banks, exchange facilities, and authorized currency exchange offices, which are frequently located in tourist destinations, are places where you can exchange money in Peru. Besides that, youâll find many ATMs, especially in the major cities and popular tourist destinations. Visa, Mastercard, and Cirrus/Maestro are among the international cards that are commonly accepted at ATMs. More info in our guide to money exchange in Peru.
Tipping is normally not required in Peru, however it is appreciated for good service. Here are some general recommendations about Peruvian tipping:
Restaurants: A 10% gratuity is frequently charged as a “servicio” charge on restaurant bills. If so, there is no need for you to leave a second tip. The general rule is to leave a 10% tip if the “servicio” price is not included.
Tour guides: Tipping the guide and the driver after the tour tour is common. Depending on the length and caliber of the tour, a reasonable tip ranges from 20 to 50 soles per participant.
Hotels: Although tipping is not expected at hotels, it is customary to give the housekeeping crew a little gratuity. Every night, a tip of five to ten soles is reasonable.
Taxis: While rounding up fares to the nearest full amount is normal, tipping taxi drivers is no common practice in Peru. If your fare is 17 soles, for instance, you may give the driver 20 soles and instruct him or her to keep the change.
The number one airline we recommend for traveling within Peru is Latam Airlines. They are by far the most reliable airline in the country.
We take great care to craft an alluring blend of adventure, comfort/luxury, and up-close country experience, blending the occasionally inevitable travel inconveniences with a little bit of pleasure.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Peru
My husband and I traveled with Kantu Tours back in March for our honeymoon. Waldir and all tour guides that they paired us with were amazing. All tour guides were knowledgable, all hotels we stayed at were close to the town centers and clean. One thing to be mindful of for this tour is it is a lot more walking and hiking than you may think. Rainbow mountain and Lake Humanty are steep hikes on uneven gravel. We are from Florida so we were worried about elevation sickness but took elevation sickness meds and also drank or chewed coca leaves any time offered or in the morning and never got sick. Peru is absolutely beautiful and all locals are very nice from our experience. I would highly recommend Kantu Tours to anyone wanting to visit Peru.
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Leonard Ms. Roxiana(Lima), Mr. Daniel(Inca), Mr. Percy( Cusco), Mr. Alex (rainbow mountain) and all the drivers for orchestrating such a flawless trip. This journey has been unlike any other I've experienced, thanks to the impeccable execution and attention to detail provided by both of you. Your daily updates and prompt responses truly set the standard for customer service. Each of our tour guides was a consummate professional, ensuring our well-being and going above and beyond to accommodate any anything we encountered or wanted to explore. This trip has truly been worth every penny spent. From the moment of our arrival to our departure, we were impeccably cared for. Thank you once again for an unforgettable experience!
My experience was amazing! This was a trip of a lifetime for me. I enjoyed the 5 day Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Maras Moray. I donât have any complaints regarding the service provided by Tourradar. Once in Peru, Kantu Tours provided excellent services. The staff for a majority of the tour were professional and friendly. I would book another tour in the future with Tourradar.

"Great itinerary, people and loved learning about Peruvian culture!

"The tour was excellent and the guides were amazing . I would not recommend to do two long 15-16 days back to back . Some individuals on our tour group had the lake and Mountain tours days separated with shorter days in between giving them time to rest . Where as our tour , we were not given the option . I would highly recommend this tour and will use this tour agency again in the future but will Analyze the itinerary in detail prior to sending in deposit .
Kantu Peru Tours is an expert in:
"We enjoyed the 10 day trip, seeing everything we hoped to see, but it was a packed on schedule and quite demanding. It is definitely a tour made for seeing everything, but never relaxing other than the boat ride on Titicaca. The various independent tours and transfers that made up this tour were well coordinated. Wilbert, who led the Machu Picchu leg of the tour, was the best of the guides, with his insights, historical knowledge and the photos and videos he took for each member of the touring group. The Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain trips were to spectacular locations but very physically demanding beyond what we were aware of when reading the tour program. Also, on the Rainbow Mountain tour, we were given walking sticks. One of our walking sticks must have fallen off when we took a motor bike back down the mountain and we asked to pay 300 Peruvian solos to replace it, which was pretty disappointing as the circumstances causing this were beyond our control. But overall we enjoyed the entire tour.

Ancient, Intriguing, Amazing!
Peru is one of South Americaâs premier destinations and not just because of its status of the land of the ancient Incas, the ruins of Machu Picchu and the Peruvian Andes; itâs also full of many cultural, historical and archeologically significant sites. But it is also known for its world-renowned food scene. Higher end restaurants are popping up everywhere with cuisine influenced by Latin America, Europe and even the Amazon and everyone is taking notice.
Destination Must-Sees
Machu Picchu:
Peruâs impressive 15th century Inca ruins are located high in the stunning Andes Mountains. Much is still unknown about this site that is the most well-preserved evidence of the urban Inca Empire. The Incas were without a written language, therefore, there are no records left behind on how it was created, its uses or why it was abandoned.
Lake Titicaca & the floating islands:
This area is home to the Uros people, a group of indigenous people (pre-dating the Incas). They live on breathtaking Lake Titicacaâs 42 floating islands. They believe that the lake was where the world was created and consider it sacred. Recently a large temple was discovered submerged in the lake, and the Uros people are fighting exploration for fear of the effects of disrespecting the temple will bring.
This capital of the republic of Peru was originally named the âcity of kingsâ after the three wise men of the Bible, and later changed to Lima. Youâll find ancient sites and colonial architecture in this now modern city. The people are warm and hospitable and the food is delightful. The city has been awarded the worldâs top food travel destination four years in a row.
The former capital of the Inca Empire, and was considered at that time to be the center of the world. The city is now an urban center of religion and government with charming streets, historic buildings and bustling squares. The most fascinating building in Cuzco is the Coricancha, known as the golden enclosure and the most sacred of all Inca sites.
Destination Must-Dos
Ollantaytambo:
A little, ancient town in the western end of the Sacred Valley, it is the best surviving example of Inca town planning. The town is divided into blocks of homes with only one entrance that leads to a central courtyard. This town was a great feat for ancient times as the stones used to build the town came from the opposite side of the river, requiring massive efforts from the people.
Sacsayhuaman:
Located on the outskirts of Cuzco, these ancient ruins sit atop a mountain leveled by the people of the period. Massive walls surround this sprawling complex. In the center lies a mysterious circular stone structure thought to be a solar calendar. The complex surprisingly has a water reservoir, storage cisterns, ramps, citadels, and underground chambers. Experts believe it was a fortress or former home of royalty.
The Sacred Valley:
Also known as Urumbamba Valley, the Sacred Valley of the Incas contains many intriguing remains of Inca villages â including mummies! Its climate and fertile plains have drawn settlers to this rare fruitful location in the high Andes since ancient times. This former route to the Peruvian jungle was also a buffer zone protecting settlers from incursions from the Antis jungle tribes.
Plaza de Armas:
In ancient times, this city square was home to an Incan palace and a venue for festivals and religious ceremonies. After the Spanish took over in the 16th century, the palace was demolished and two churches were erected here flanking the square, which was then used to conduct military exercises. Now, it holds a historic charm as most of the buildings you will see here date back to the 1700s.
Expert Advice
Go shopping in the world renowned Pisac Market. Open every day, you will find hundreds of individual vendors from the local villages who sell everyday products and unique handmade items you wonât find anywhere else.
Taste the amazing ceviche. This popular Latin American dish of marinated fresh raw fish spiced with varied peppers and seasonings is âcookedâ with citric juice (lemon or lime). Simply divine!
Sit down for a traditional meal. At a Pachamanca (earth oven) dinner that was popular with the Inca people, the food is layered, placed over hot stones and buried in the ground to cook for hours. It is a true cultural experience.

Chifa is a Peruvian word used to describe a Chinese and Peruvian fusion style of cooking. Influenced by a wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, chifa is now one of the most popular types of food in Peru. We recommend trying Pato Cuarto Tiempos and Arroz Chaufa.
Anticuchos can be traced all the way back to the Inca Empire, and today theyâre one of the most beloved dishes found in street stalls and restaurants all over Peru. Theyâre a tasty meat skewer usually made with beef, and theyâre served with bread or boiled potato on the end of the skewer.
Causa Rellena
A traditional potato dish of Peru, causa rellena is made from layers of spiced yellow mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken, avocado, black olives, mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg. This delicious dish was first made by women for the soldiers during the Pacific War in 1879, when food was hard to come by.

What to see at machu picchu.
Discover Peruâs most emblematic landmark, the âLost City of the Incasâ. Youâll learn about the history, Incan mythology, and the mystery that surrounds this breathtaking Inca ruin atop the mountains: Machu Picchu.
Huayna Picchu
Hike to the top of Huayna Picchu for extraordinary views of Machu Picchu as well as the chance to visit an extra set of ruins on the way. Entrance tickets for Huayna Picchu are limited, so be sure to reserve yours in advance.
Machu Picchu Mountain
Another popular hiking option, Machu Picchu Mountain offers incredible panoramic views of the ruins and the surrounding Andes Mountains. Like Huayna Picchu, entrance tickets to Machu Picchu Mountain are limited so be sure to reserve yours in advance.
The iconic Sun Gate (called Inti Punku in Quechua) is the entrance through which Inca Trail hikers enter the Machu Picchu citadel. It is also possible to visit this attraction as an additional hike for those visiting Machu Picchu on a day trip.
One of the first attractions youâll visit on your Machu Picchu tour, the Guardhouse (also known as the House of the Guardians or Guardianâs hut) was once used by sentinels watching over the citadel, but nowadays it makes a great spot for sweeping panoramic photos of the ruins.
Sacred Rock
The enormous Sacred Rock (also called a Wankâa in Quechua) bears a striking resemblance to the mountain peaks behind it, and is considered a powerful spiritual symbol of Machu Picchu.
Temple of The Three Windows
One of Machu Picchuâs most iconic places, the Temple of the Three Windows overlooks the Sacred Plaza and consists of three windows in the typical Incan trapezoidal style.
Inca Bridge
A popular additional hiking destination inside Machu Picchu, The Inca Bridge (Puente Inca) is a thin wooden plank crossing a mile-high precipice found at the end of a narrow stone pathway. Designed as a secret exit, its precarious nature helped to limit access to the citadel.
Temple of the Condor
This natural rock formation which was carved by the Incas into the shape of an Andean condor was an object of worship and represents one of the most striking examples of Inca stonemasonry.
âStairway of Fountainsâ
The engineering ingenuity of the Incas can be seen in the 16 fountains built within the Machu Picchu citadel. Likely used by the residents of Machu Picchu, these Incan water fountains still flow with water sourced from a spring near the Sun Gate or Inti Punku.
Temple of the Sun
The Temple of the Sun is a semicircular ruin within the Machu Pichu citadel. This site was one of the most sacred temples within the fortress. The trapezoid window is positioned so that on the winter solstice (June 21st), the sunâs rays shine directly into the temple.
Temple of the Moon
Youâll have to hike Huayna Picchu mountain, within the Machu Picchu citadel, to see the Temple of the Moon. This shadowy temple contains a throne carved into the stone and was used only by the Inca priests for ceremonial purposes.
Intihuatana
The famous Intihuatana, whose Quechua name is often translated to English as âThe Hitching Post of the Sun,â is a carved stone which is thought to have possibly been used as a type of sundial.

What our travelers say about their Peru trips
Travel tips for trips to peru.
Something that makes planning Peru group tours easy (in addition to choosing a guided tour)? Itâs a great destination to visit year-round. The best time of year to travel to Peru depends on your preferences. Keep in mind that the seasons are opposite of what we experience here in North America.
Machu Picchu lies in the Andes mountains, where the dry season lasts from April through November, and more rain can be expected from December through March. The rainy season in the Amazon rainforest can stretch a bit longer, from around October through April. The capital city of Lima is known for its mild temperatures and cloudy conditionsâit has the most sunshine during December through March.
Guided trips to Peru are a fantastic way to see much of what the destination has to offer. As the third-largest country in South America, itâs full of many sites to discover. Must-visit spots in Peru include everything from ancient ruins that tell stories of past civilizations to sites with scenic views thatâll take your breath away.
Here are a few of our picks for some of the best places to visit in Peru:
Machu Picchu, the spectacular archaeological site and lost city of the Incas
Lake Titicaca, which lies high in the Andes where Peru meets Bolivia
Cuzco, the UNESCO-recognized ancient capital of the Inca Empire
Ollantaytambo, impressive Incan ruins in the heart of the the Sacred Valley
Lima , the colorful capital city that overlooks the Pacific Ocean
The Amazon, where you can explore the lush landscapes and wildlife of the rainforest
Interested in group tours to Peru? One of our expert Tour Consultants can help you get your adventure started!
Getting a taste of Peruvian culture can also be done by sampling its cuisine. When you travel on our tours to Peru, youâll have the chance to try local specialties at included meals. Youâll find familiar staples such as quinoa, rice, beans, potatoes, and meat in many lunches and dinnersâstyles of preparation vary as you travel across the country.
A few traditional bites to try on Peru group tours include:
- AjĂ de Gallina , a yellow pepper cream sauce served over shredded chicken, olives, and rice
- Causa , yellow mashed potatoes layered with tuna or chicken
- Ceviche, raw sea bass marinated with lime and chilies
- Pisco Sour, a cocktail made with tasty white-grape brandy
On Peru tours at any time of year, prepare for hot and sunny days and the chance for cool temperatures at night. For all of our South America tours , we recommend that you bring loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered, as well as a comfortable pair of walking shoes. You should be prepared to get some steps in as you explore sites like Machu Picchu that are only accessible by foot.
A few other things to toss in your suitcase? Sunglasses, a sun hat, sunscreen, rain gear, and insect repellent. Before you head out on tour, youâll receive detailed packing information tailored to your specific itinerary. You can also download the Go Ahead Tour Companion App so you can have all the info for your tour right in your pocket!

TRAVEL IN PERU:  Peru Spirit Adventure  operates in regions, where standards of accommodation can vary. Transportation and other services might not be like those you would normally have back home. Traveling in Peru requires flexibility, patience, broad-mindedness, good humor and an understanding that changes may be made without notice due to circumstances or occurrences beyond our control. For example: a strike, protest, landslide, bad weather, etc. ( Force Majeure ). By booking any of our tours & treks, you agree to allow Peru Spirit Adventure  to make necessary changes without liability.
FORCE MAJEURE
Force Majeure is any event that PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE cannot with all due care foresee, control or avoid. This covers events such as war or threat of war, riot, civil strike, terrorist activity, industrial dispute, disease, natural disasters, adverse weather conditions, fire or all similar events beyond our control. In this case, PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE will not accept liability and reserves the right to change, postpone or even cancel trips. (This is a last option, of course!)
By booking any of our adventure trips (Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Lares, Salkantay, Ausangate, Choquequirao, Rainbow Mountain trek and more) you assume the risks associated with personal accidents, medical emergencies, air travel problems etc. For these treks, PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE Agency accepts no responsibility.

We accept responsibility for the actions of our own employees. Peru Spirit Adventure cannot, however, be responsible for any action of third parties. You are totally responsible for your own personal property and rented equipment.
- PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE does not take responsibility for unfavorable weather conditions, natural catastrophe, strikes, accidents, illness, injury, loss of personal Ătems, etc. It is the clientâs responsibility to carry insurance to cover these types of events. We reserve the right to modify or cancel the program due to any of the unforeseen conditions listed above.
VERY IMPORTANT:
- We strongly suggest spending time at high altitude (above 3000 meters / 9842 feet)- in Cusco or another high altitude area for a minimum of 2- 4 days before undertaking your trip. This is in order to minimize the possible effects of altitude sickness. By drinking plenty of fluids, adding sugar to your drinks, eating food high in carbohydrates, avoiding cigarettes, alcohol, and drinking coca tea (ancient traditional leaf) will help your body acclimatize.
- We recommend you arrive in Cusco 48 hours or more before trek departure because occasionally we need to leave earlier than scheduled in case of strikes or other events out of our control (see âForce Majeureâ section below)
RIGHT TO USE PICTURES
You accept and grant to Peru Spirit Adventure – Tour Operator the right to use your images, photos, and videos that show or describe during your participation in any tour, trekking or adventure, in any advertising of any type, without payment of any additional consideration.

Peru travel & tours
Cradle of ancient empires.
Cradle to the vast Incan Empire, the largest in pre-Colombian America, Peru's power and gold attracted the Spanish conquistadors who used it to fund their own vast empire in the Americas. As a result, colonial gems like magnificent Cusco were built on Incan foundations, making for a fascinating hybrid culture. Peru is peppered with Incan sites, but none so famous as the "lost city" of Machu Picchu, whose breathtaking image seems to grace every brochure and travel book. Peru has been blessed with natural gifts as well: a huge chunk of Amazon rainforest falls within its bounds, and visitors can hike through jungle, trek in the Andes, and surf the northern beaches all in the same week. Cap it off with Lake Titicaca, one of the highest lakes in the world, and you've only just begun to scratch the surface.

Since 2005, Planeterra has been working with the Ccaccaccollo community to develop a womenâs weaving cooperative. G Adventures groups are able to visit this community as part of the Sacred Valley Tour. Here they meet the women and learn about all the stages of the weaving process: hand-spinning the wool, dying the wool using natural dyes, and participating in a weaving demonstration. Travellers are also given the opportunity to purchase high quality textiles directly from the women who made them. Today, more than 55 women are part of the association, constantly learning new methods of production to make items that our travellers find useful for their trips, while also maintaining the traditional weaving methods to produce textiles made from llama and alpaca wool.
Parwa is a restaurant owned by the Huchuy Qosqo Association, a community-based tourism enterprise developed by Planeterra and G Adventures with co-financing from the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank Group. All income earned by the restaurant is used for investment in social projects for the community. The ingredients used in the restaurant are bought directly from the local farmers, providing a local market for direct sales. Parwa Restaurant opened in March 2014 and has an average of 1,500 travellers per month, mostly from G Adventures. Employees have monthly salaries, health insurance, pension funds, and other labor benefits. Over 25 micro entrepreneurs received technical assistance and funds to establish new businesses to supply the Parwa restaurant or sell their goods to our travellers who visit the Huchuy Qosco community.
The best ways to pay for services in Peru
Itâs common to pay with card, but cash is more widely accepted and probably your best bet. You can take out money at ATMs â theyâre easily accessible, open on weekends, and allow you take out local currency (Peruvian Soles) and USD. We recommend using local currency so if youâre looking to exchange cash, itâs better to do it in the big cities rather than towns or tourist attractions because they generally have better rates. We also recommend using credit cards in restaurants, department stores, and supermarkets. If paying with a card, VISA is more generally used but Mastercard is accepted too.
Tips on tips
Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff
When leaving a tip for your server in a restaurant, the standard 10-15% is fine.
Bar Service
People in Peru normally do not tip in bars, but if youâre feeling a little generous, anywhere between 5-10% is acceptable.
Tour guides
$ 5 usd/day.
When tipping the tour guides, it is recommended that each passenger contributes $5 USD/day or roughly $15 USD - $25 USD for treks that are three to four days long.
Trekking guides, porters, drivers, cooks
It is recommended that every passenger contributes about $50 USD towards the trekking guides, porters, drivers, and cooks.
Hotel concierge / cleaning / staff
$ 2- $ 5 usd.
Tipping hotel service is also not a common practice in the hotels we use, but anywhere between $2 USD and $5 USD is fine.
The price of a cab ride is normally negotiated before the trip starts, and the tip would be included in the agreed upon rate.
Other services
$ 1- $ 3 usd.
Drivers for included tours can be tipped typically between $1 and $3 USD.
Packing for Peru
Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend using a backpack for your convenience, or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage.

Electricity and power supplies in Peru
The entire country of Peru runs on 220-volt currents and uses two types of electrical outlets â one that accepts two-pronged plugs with flat, parallel blades (Type A), and another that accepts plugs with two round prongs (Type C). However, many Peruvian electrical outlets are designed to accept both types. If your appliance has a different plug attachment, you can buy a universal plug adapter thatâs inexpensive and easy to carry around with you. Before you plug in any appliance that youâve brought from home, make sure it can handle it. A great way to kill a 110-volt appliance is to fry it at 220 volts.

Travelers flock to Peru to hike the famous Inca Trail, explore the lush jungles, and devour their way through the incredible food scene of Lima.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Peru
1. Explore Machu Picchu
This legendary âlost city of the Incasâ is one of the most-visited tourist attractions in South America. Here you have the chance to wander around the old Inca city observing ancient aqueducts, granite and limestone temples, and other forms of Inca architecture that are all beautifully preserved. There are two ways to see Machu Picchu depending on the amount of adventure and exercise you want. There is a 4-day/3 night hike that takes you through 43 kilometers (26 miles) of steep, yet scenic uphill terrain along winding Andean mountain trails starting from Ollantaytambo. The Inca Trail gets you to the majestic Machu Picchu at dawn in time to see it before the clouds arrive mid-morning. The alternative is to wake up super early to get the train there and enter along with the tour groups competing for the beautiful morning sunset photos. (There are also longer 7-8 day hikes too if you want an even bigger challenge. Multi-day hikes start around 2,600 PEN. You can also just buy a day pass if you don’t want to hike.
2. Check out Lima
Lima is a chaotic and beautiful introduction to the country. Check out the trendy, vibrant Miraflores neighborhood that overlooks the Pacific and has plenty of restaurants and bars to try. Also, visit the Larco Museum to see its pre-Columbian artifacts, the Aliaga House for Peruvian art and artifacts, and Plaza Mayor for colonial beauty. Tour the cityâs colorful markets for both food and shopping, wander around the worldâs only Cat Park, or check out the Park of Love for good luck in love. At night, head to the artsy Barranco district for the nightlife and try a local drink with pisco, a local brandy. The city is a foodie hub too so donât forget to try the ceviche!
3. Fly over the Nazca Lines
The Nazca Lines are a series of ancient geoglyphs that dominate the San José desert and Nazca Valley. There are over 10,000 lines and 300 different plant and animal figures that make up this UNESCO World Heritage Site. No one really knows how they got there (maybe aliens?) but the park itself is free to visit. If you want to splash out and get a better view, take a scenic helicopter or plane tour (they cost around 400 PEN).
4. Relax at Lake Titicaca
This stunning lake covers over 7,790 square kilometers (3,000 square miles) and sits at 3,810 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level, making it the worldâs largest high-altitude lake. With deep blue water and spectacular sunsets across the lake lined with snowy mountains, this lake attracts people from all over the world to the nearby towns, which offer a mix of colonial architecture and bustling markets. There are three islands on the lake that are home to pre-Inca ruins: Isla del Sol, Taquile, and Amantani. Every year, the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca at Puno celebrates the Fiesta de la Virgen de Candelaria in February. However, the best and driest time to visit is June, July, and August.
5. Hike the Colca Canyon
Other things to see and do in peru, 1. hike the inca trail.
Getting to Machu Picchu is best via the famed Inca Trail . This multi-day hike allows you to see the mountains, jungles, and follow the route the Incas used to take. It is a truly spectacular hike, but it is challenging and you may experience altitude sickness. There are two ways to do this hike: you can sign up to be part of an organized tour, or you can hire your own private guide. You cannot hike the trail independently. Tours start around 2,600 PEN for a 4-day, 3-night tour with a reliable, reputable company. The final leg of the hike can actually get a bit crowded, so if you can do a longer 7-day hike youâll be able to beat the crowds and enjoy the incredible landscape before you arrive. The driest time is May-October but also unfortunately the most crowded. If you go from November-April, prepare for mud and perhaps rain but fewer crowds.
2. Visit the Islas Flotantes de los Uros
The Floating Islands of the Uros may sound like an Indiana Jones title, but it is actually the name of the group of man-made islands in Lake Titicaca. The islands are home to the indigenous Uros people who have built their own houses, islands, and boats from the tortora reeds which grow along the banks of the lake. This is an extremely touristy site and is a bit exploited as such, so itâs not for everyone. The boat tours start at 165 PEN.
3. Surf at MĂĄncora Beach
Great fresh seafood, watersports, horseback riding, whale watching, fishing with locals, visiting the mangroves, and plenty of relaxation are the order of the day at this popular beach resort. MĂĄncora is one of the finest beaches in South America and its year-round sunshine, two ocean currents, and beginner-friendly waves also make it Peruâs surfing Mecca. Accommodation prices can be expensive from December to March, so itâs best to book in advance. Whale watching costs 135 PEN, surfing classes start at 95 PEN, and SUP tours with sea turtles cost 175 PEN.
4. Step back through time at BatĂĄn Grande
BatĂĄn Grande, also known as the SicĂĄn Archaeological Complex, is an archaeological site comprising 50 pyramids and tombs, which are thought to date to 750-1300 CE. Located near Chiclayo, this site was once the ancient SicĂĄn capital and has yielded many impressive pre-Columbian artifacts. For example, a gold Tumi ceremonial knife weighing almost seven pounds was recovered from one of the royal tombs! Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks for the day.
5. Discover Cusco
This colonial city is a major tourist destination and sits on Inca-built stone foundations not far from Machu Picchu. The area is popular with trail walkers, history lovers, and party goers who come to enjoy the cityâs nightlife and festivals. Cusco is the undisputed archaeological capital of the Americas and an essential part of your trip to Peru. The Cusco Tourist Ticket grants admission to most of the popular archaeological sites and attractions in the Cusco area (with some notable exceptions, including Machu Picchu). Note that transportation and guide services are separate. You can purchase either a 10-day pass that includes admission to over 16 sites (130 PEN) or one of several different “circuit” tickets that include admission to a smaller number of sites and are valid for one day only (70 PEN). Be sure to visit Coricancha (15 PEN) and Sacsayhuaman (included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket) during your visit. Right outside Cusco, take a day trip to the incredible Rainbow Mountains. For great food, head to Green Point. Plan to spend around 3-5 days in Cusco as there is plenty to see and itâs a good place to acclimate before doing any hiking as the city sits at 3,200 meters (10,500 feet) above sea level.
6. Get your Amazon fix in Iquitos
Accessible only by boat or plane, jungle-locked Iquitos is the largest city within the Peruvian rainforest. The city sits at the mouth of the Amazon and is the perfect destination for eco-tourism. The nearby Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is Peruâs largest reserve at two million hectares. Itâs home to a huge range of nearly 1,000 birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, and more. A 3-day, 2-night tour through the reserve starts from around 1,400-1,500 PEN per person including food.
7. Sandboard in Huacachina
This little town is a desert oasis and a welcome relief after hiking through Machu Picchu. Itâs very affordable and hostels here offer great deals for sandboarding and sand buggy tours around the nearby dunes. Two-hour tours cost about 100-125 PEN, which includes a sand buggy driver and sandboard rental. Most tours leave around 4pm so you can catch the sunset on the dunes. There is also a lagoon surrounded by palm trees in Huacachina, and you can rent a rowboat to paddle around it. A half-hour rental costs around 5 PEN per person. Huacachina is easily reached by bus from Lima, Cusco, Nazca, Arequipa, and Paracas.
8. See penguins in Paracas
Paracas is in the south of Peru and is sometimes called the âPoor Manâs Galapagosâ for its impressive wildlife, consisting of over 400 different species. Thousands of birds, as well as large sea lion and penguin populations, call the area home. You can visit the Paracas National Reserve via an organized boat tour. Be sure to go early. A full-day tour of Paracas includes a boat trip to the Islas Ballestas and a bus trip around the national reserve in the afternoon. It costs about 150 PEN.
9. Walk through the White City
Arequipa is a beautiful city with a historical center that was constructed primarily from volcanic rock. Start getting to know the city by wandering around the Plaza de Armas and take in the cityâs architecture over a glass of wine overlooking the main square with views of the stunning Basilica Catedral de Arequipa. Then, visit the gorgeous, vibrantly colorful Santa Catalina Monastery, see a frozen Inca mummy, and enjoy the local cuisine with favorites like shrimp soup or spicy stuffed peppers. Itâs easy to see why Arequipa is undoubtedly one of the most beloved destinations in the country; everyone who visits here loves it.
10. Go to El Parque de la Reserva
This park in downtown Lima is home to the largest water fountain complex in the world, called El Circuito MĂĄgico del Agua . There are 13 distinct fountains in total, including the Tunnel Fountain of Surprises, the Childrenâs Fountain, and the Fantasia Fountain, whose water jets are synchronized to music during the evening laser light shows. The park is open daily from 3pm-10pm, with beautiful, colorful light shows taking place at 6:50pm, 7:50pm, 8:30pm, and 9:30pm. The entrance fee is 4 PEN. The park also hosts a lot of events and is a popular place with dog owners too.
11. Visit Chachapoyas
This region in the Andean mountains was home to the Chachapoya civilization that lived there between 500-1432 (they were eventually conquered by the Aztecs). Today, you can visit Kuelap, the fortified city at known as âThe Machu Picchu of the North.â The ruins are accessible via a guided tour, 4-hour hike, or cable car from the nearby town of Nuevo Tingo for 21 PEN roundtrip. Be sure to also visit Gocta, a beautiful waterfall that, at 770 meters (2,526 feet), is one of the tallest in the world. You can get there by taking a tour from Chachapoyas.
12. Tour Trujillo
Trujillo is the second-oldest Spanish city in Peru, located on the coast with eternal spring-like weather and widely considered the capital culture of Peru. While here, visit the archaeological site of Chan Chan, the worldâs largest adobe city ever built and the largest pre-Columbian city. It was built by the Chimu, a civilization that inhabited the area until 1470 when they were defeated by the Incas. Admission is 11 PEN. Be sure to also visit Huanchaco, a small fishing town directly on the beach.
13. See Vinicunca, Rainbow Mountain
Chances are you’ve seen these colorful mountains on social media. Over the past few years, Rainbow Mountain has become a huge tourist attraction. Just keep in mind that the colors are not as vivid in real life and the place is super crowded (itâs a very popular site). Day trips and multi-day hikes are available from Cusco, usually starting around 110-135 PEN per person. There is also an “Alternative” Rainbow Mountain called Palcccoyo where you can enjoy an incredibly colorful scenic panoramic at 5,200 meters (17,060 feet). If you want to escape the hordes of people (though itâs also pretty busy these days).
14. Hike the Salkantay
If you want an alternative to the busy Inca Trail, try hiking the Salkantay. It sees a fraction of the tourists and is half the price of the Inca Trail â but just as stunning! There aren’t as many ruins, but there are epic mountain views and summits of up to 5,200 meters (17.060 feet)! Hikes can vary in length, but the 7-day hike offers the best views. Youâll need to be in decent shape though. 5-day hikes start around 1,700 PEN.
Peru Travel Costs
Accommodation – A bed in a 4-6-bed dorm costs 35-65 PEN while a bed in a dorm with 10 or more beds generally costs 32-38 PEN. A private room costs 115-170 PEN per night. Free Wi-Fi is standard and most hostels also have a kitchen or include free breakfast.
Budget hotel rooms with basic amenities like Wi-Fi, TV, and occasionally free breakfast cost around 85-105 PEN per night.
On Airbnb, which has limited availability in Peru, private rooms average around 100 PEN while entire homes start at 200 PEN per night. Book early though or prices will double.
For those traveling with a tent, wild camping is permitted as long as youâre not on somebodyâs land.
Food – Cuisine in Peru varies from region to region, though you can expect to find staples like potatoes (most potatoes in the world originated here), quinoa, seafood, and indigenous animals like guinea pig and alpaca. Be sure to try ceviche, which is the national dish (itâs a seafood dish with fresh raw fish). Other popular dishes include stir-fried beef, roasted cuy (guinea pig), arroz con pato (rice with duck), and roasted chicken.
Overall, dining out in Peru is very inexpensive. Street food is incredibly cheap, costing 5-7 PEN for a meal from a parrilla (grill) set up on the side of the road. A plate of food at a casual takeaway restaurant serving Peruvian cuisine costs around 10 PEN.
A meal of traditional cuisine at a casual restaurant with table service costs around 15-25 PEN. If you want to splash out, a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant costs 45 PEN.
Fast food (think McDonaldâs) is 20 PEN for a combo meal. A large pizza is around 28-30 PEN.
Beer is around 8 PEN while a glass of wine or a latte is around 9 PEN. Bottled water is 2 PEN. A cocktail is 15-20 PEN and up, though many restaurants have extended happy hour specials (sometimes even all day).
If you plan on cooking, expect to pay 60-80 PEN per week for groceries such as pasta, rice, seasonal produce, and some meat. The best places to shop are the local markets, though Plaza Vea is the big grocery store chain with affordable prices as well. However, given how cheap food is here, it’s best to just eat out all the time. Buy snacks and fruit at the markets but eat out all other meals.
Backpacking Peru Suggested Budgets
On a backpacker’s budget of 135 PEN per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, eat out for a few meals at cheap local street stalls and cook some meals, limit your drinking, take the bus to get around, and do mostly free or cheap activities like relaxing on the beach and going hiking.
On a mid-range budget of 400 PEN per day, you can afford a private Airbnb room, eat out for all your meals, drink more, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like going surfing or day-tripping to Machu Picchu.
On a âluxuryâ budget of 700 PEN or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out anywhere you want, drink as much as youâd like, take some domestic flights, and do a longer multi-day trek to Machu Picchu. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!
You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages â some days youâll spend more, some days youâll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in PEN.
Peru Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips
Peru is generally pretty cheap, but it is easy to splash out here on food and tours. Here are a few hacks to cut down your costs in Peru:
- Stay at hospedajes – These are family-run hotels and are the cheapest accommodation you can find outside of hostel dorms. Try to stay in these as often as possible.
- Take public transportation – Embrace public transportation to get around â itâs super affordable so skip the taxis. Youâll save a fortune.
- Eat the meal of the day – These are set meals, often including multiple plates, that restaurants offer. Look around for set menu meals to eat out on the cheap.
- Travel off-season – For a low-cost trip, the best times to visit Peru are the fringe months of April and May or September and October. Prices are usually cheaper during these months.
- Take the colectivos – These are cheap buses that cost around 2-10 PEN for a ride. They are a bit confusing as they donât necessarily have a schedule, but there is always a door person whom you can ask if the bus is going to your location. There are not always marked bus stops, so look for gathering crowds.
- Book tours last minute – If you are looking to do the Inca Trail and have a bit of extra time to wait for a deal, showing up in Cusco and booking a last-minute tour can save you lots of money. Booking months in advance means paying the premium price but if you can wait your patience may be rewarded. I wouldnât recommend trying to get on last-minute if you have your heart set on doing it though since it might not work out.
- Go on a free walking tour – This is a great way to learn the history behind the places you are seeing and avoid missing any must-see stops. Free Walking Tour Peru has tours that can guide you around both Lima and Cusco. Just remember to tip your guide at the end!
- Bring a water bottle – The tap water here isnât safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle with a filter to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
Where to Stay in Peru
Peru has a ton of hostels. Here are some of my favorite places to stay throughout the country:
- Pariwana Hostel (Lima)
- 1900 Backpackers Hostel (Lima)
- Loki Hostel (Cusco)
- Kokopelli (Cusco)
- Wild Rover Hostel (Cusco)
- Hospedaje Turistico Recoleta (Cusco)
- Arequipay Backpackers Downtown (Arequipa)
- Loki del Mar (Mancora)
- The Point Mancora Beach (Mancora)
How to Get Around Peru
Public transportation – City buses cost around 1.50-3 PEN per trip. Microbuses ( colectivos ) are available and prices vary depending on the distance. Trips generally cost 2-10 PEN, though they are a bit hectic and take some getting used to.
Bus – Buses can take you all over Peru and are the most common way to get around for budget travelers. The usual price for a 10-hour bus journey is around 40 PEN depending on how nice the bus company is. You can use Cruz del Sur to look up bus schedules and prices. Keep in mind that any journey through the mountains will be a slow ride! Lima to Cusco takes over 21 hours and costs 185 PEN, though you can get a ticket for as low as 39 PEN if you book in advance.
Peru Hop is another reliable and comfortable bus company designed for backpackers. This bus is a hop-on/hop-off service you can take around the country. Three-day journeys from Lima to Cusco start from 683 PEN, while 7 days in Southern Peru costs 836 PEN.
Flying – Peru has five international airports (Lima, Arequipa, Cusco, Iquitos, and Piura), as well over a dozen airports with domestic service. LATAM, Avianca, and Star Peru are the main domestic airlines.
Flying between destinations isn’t always the cheapest option, but it’s a whole lot quicker. A flight from Lima to Cusco takes just over an hour (as opposed to the 21 hours by bus) and prices start around 250 PEN. Lima to Arequipa starts around 200 PEN.
Train – Like the rest of South America, the rail system in Peru is basically non-existent. There are nice tourist options though, like PeruRail and Inca Rail, which both run trains between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu Pueblo (the gateway to Machu Picchu). On PeruRail, tickets start from 179 PEN. Inca Rail also runs between Cusco and Machu Picchu Pueblo with tickets starting around 220 PEN.
From Lima, there’s just one train: the Ferrocarril Central Andino, the world’s highest passenger train, which travels across the Andes to Cerro de Pasco and Huancayo. One-way fare starts from 230 PEN. However, service is limited â sometimes the train only runs once a month. Journeys are currently suspended due to Covid so be sure to check their website for updates.
Car rental – I donât suggest renting a car here as the drivers are aggressive, the roads are poorly maintained, and accidents are common. If you do decide to rent a car, use Discover Cars to find the best prices.
When to Go to Peru
Peru has just two seasons: wet and dry. May through October is the dry season, while November through April is the rainy season. The wettest months are from January to the end of April. This isn’t a great time to visit Peru â at least not in the mountain areas, where roads and hiking trails may become blocked or closed.
Most people come to Peru from the beginning of May to the end of November, with July and August being the busiest months. May and September are great months to visit, as tourism slows down slightly but temperatures are still pleasant.
If you want to spend more time in the mountains, June to September has clear, sunny days (but chilly nights). This is a good time to trek the Inca Trail. It’s also the best time to visit the Amazon Basin, when mosquitos are fewer.
Temperatures on the desert coast can get as high as 25-35°C (77-95°F) from December to April, while temperatures cool off from May-October. In the highlands from May-October, you can expect temperatures to reach 20-25°C (68-77°F).
How to Stay Safe in Peru
Peru is a pretty safe place to backpack and travel around, even for solo travelers, and even for solo female travelers. Your biggest worry is petty theft, which is rampant in the bigger cities and on overnight buses. Don’t flaunt expensive jewelry or belongings. Avoid taking your phone out in public if you can. Lock your bags on overnight buses and keep your valuables secure and out of sight. It’s easy to get robbed if you aren’t careful here (especially at night).
If you’re in Lima, don’t walk around alone at night, unless you’re in the safer neighborhoods (Miraflores and Barranco). Smaller cities and towns are perfectly safe to walk around alone day and night.
Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).
Scams aren’t super common but if you’re worried about getting ripped off, here’s a list of common travel scams to avoid .
If youâre doing any hiking, check the weather in advance and bring plenty of water. If youâre hiking to Machu Picchu, arrive early to adjust to the altitude. 3-5 days early can make all the difference!
If you experience an emergency, dial 011 for assistance. If you’re in one of the bigger cities, you can also seek out the tourism police.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

- Nazca Lines, those mysterious drawings in the desert. They are so huge that you can only see them from the sky. Theyâre a puzzle from the past that has to be seen to be believed.
- Cusco is the heart of it all, a city where ancient ruins meet colonial architecture, and every corner has a story to tell.
Step 2: Deciding When to Go
Peruâs weather changes a lot depending on where you are in the country. The coast is hot and dry, while the mountains are cool and can get rainy. The jungle is hot and humid! The best time to visit depends on what you want to do:
- Dry Season (May-October): This is the most popular time to visit , with sunny skies and clear trails for hiking and exploring ruins. But, it also gets pretty crowded with tourists.
- Wet Season (November-April): Thereâs a chance of rain, but the landscapes are super green, and there are fewer crowds. This can be a great time to visit for a more peaceful trip.
- Festival Time: Peru has tons of cool festivals throughout the year. If you love celebrations, look into timing your trip to catch ones that sound interesting to you!
Step 3: Book Your Private Tour
When booking your trip, going for a private tour can make your experience special. With a private tour, you get a trip thatâs made just for you. You can pick what you want to see and when you want to see it.
When planning your private tour, there are some places you just can't miss. One of these is the Nazca Lines. Booking Nazca lines private tours lets you see these ancient mysteries up close in a way that suits you. With your guide to show you around, you can learn a lot more about the place.
And don't forget to know whatâs included in the tour price, like hotel pick-up and drop-off or entrance fees. This knowledge ensures a smooth journey, allowing you to enjoy your adventure fully.
Step 4: Gather Essential Travel Documents
Before you pack your bags for an adventure in Peru , there are a few important pieces of paper youâll need to sort out. First off, your passport is your golden ticket. Make sure itâs valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date. Some countries are strict about this rule.
Now, letâs talk about visas and your ultimate Peru travel adventure. Whether you need one depends on where youâre from. Many travelers can enter Peru without a visa for short visits, usually up to 90 days. But itâs always a good idea to check the latest visa requirements for your country.
Other documents you might need include travel insurance paperwork, vaccination certificates, and driverâs licenses, especially if you plan on renting a vehicle.
Step 5: Packing Essentials and Tips
Packing for Peru is an exciting part of preparing for your journey, given the countryâs diverse climates and the range of activities you might engage in.
So, start with essentials like lightweight, breathable clothing that you can layer. This way, youâre prepared for both warm days and cooler evenings. Donât forget a good pair of walking shoes for those treks and city explorations.
Including a waterproof jacket in your bag is a smart move, as rain can surprise you, particularly in the Amazon. And if you are planning to explore the ancient ruins or go on hikes, a sturdy backpack is a must.
Wrapping It All
Finally, Peru is a country that sticks with you long after you leave. Itâs a place of incredible beauty, rich history, and the warmest people. With a little planning, your trip to Peru will be an adventure youâll never forget. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your ultimate Peru travel adventure, start packing, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime!

Peruâs organic coffee production up by 7% despite challenges
Peruâs organic coffee output is to grow by 7%  in the 2024-25 season despite leaf rust disease problems.
According to USDAâs Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), production will peak at 4.22 million 60-kg bags, above 2023-24âs 4.2 million bags.
Exports will also increase by 6%, to reach 4.07 60-kg million bags, up from 2023-24âs 4.06 million bags.
The main drivers of production are the reigning high prices  and increasing organic fertilizer use, both of which are boosting yields.
Positive International Prices
Regarding the price impact, organic coffee from Peru is attracting high international prices due to its exceptional quality.Â
On June 4, 2024, international coffee prices rose to  $2.29 per pound,  a positive push for exporters in Peru.
Though lower than the April 17, 2024âs high of $2.48 a pound, the price surpasses that of the entire second half of 2023. During this second half, the price had peaked at $2.10 a pound on December 14.Â
Global prices have been improving after supplies took a hit due to drought in production leaders, Brazil and Vietnam. For this reason, Peru is specially benefiting from low global supplies.
Leaf Rust and Farmersâ Challenges
Ironically, national production is up amid a decade-long leaf rust disease that has affected a slither of the coffee area.
According to FSA, Peru recovered 3.95 million bags from the disease in the 2023-24 season, 9% more year-on-year.
This is a promising outlook given that since 2013, coffee rust has infected 40% of Peruâs coffee plantations.
However, family growers who make up the bulk of production continue to face low credit ratings and benefit little from high prices.
To circumvent this challenge, growers are forming cooperatives, which receive better prices than individuals.
Exports Stable
As growers continue to face remuneration and disease odds, exports remain stable in the 2024-25 season.
Most recipients of these green beans are in the U.S., who command 28% of Peruâs organic coffee exports.
The European Union comes second in these single-origin imports, with German importing 18% and Belgium 9%.
In summary, despite farmersâ worries and disease challenges, Peruâs organic coffee sector expects both yield and export increment. As the following statistics show, there is more than meets the eye in the Andesâ countryâs key agricultural export.
Peru Coffee Statistics
Peru ranked the ninth largest producer of coffee worldwide in 2022 at 323,300 tonnes,  216,000 tonnes of which was Arabica. The South American nation ranked 9 th  in Arabica production worldwide in the 2022-23 season, beaten by the likes of Brazil. Exports from coffee reached $1.236 billion  in 2022, a yearly rise of 37.8%.
Who grows coffee in Peru?
Small-scale farmers cultivate 95% of Peru’s coffee. The farmers produce 75% of the coffee in the Andes highlands between 1,000 and 18,000 m above sea level.  These areas include San Martin, Amazonas, Cusco and Junin.
How much coffee do Peruvians drink per capita?
Since almost all of coffee produced in Peru goes into export, domestic coffee consumption is low. It amounted to 650 grams  per capita or 190,000 bags in the 2020-21 season.
