Nouvelle AOM Wins Competition to Redesign Paris' Tour Montparnasse

  • Published on September 21, 2017

The architectural consortium of Nouvelle AOM has been announced as the winner of the international competition for the renovation and redesign of Paris ’ Tour Montparnasse , beating out finalist Studio Gang and a shortlist of top firms.

Lauded by the jury for its “powerful, dynamic and bold new identity,” the winning entry will introduce an entirely new vegetated facade system that will improve both the tower’s immediate surroundings and the neighborhood as a whole.

"This was a huge challenge, as the Tower isn't like any other," the jury explained. "Nouvelle AOM's project perfectly captures the spirit of the 21st century, giving the Tower a multifaceted identity revolving around attractive, innovative new uses. The Tower will breathe new life into the Montparnasse neighbourhood."

"The City of Paris is delighted with this choice, which marks the beginning of a major transformation of both the Montparnasse Tower and the city itself,” added Jean-Louis Missika, deputy mayor of Paris for urban planning, architecture, attractiveness, economic development and the Greater Paris (Grand Paris) initiatives.

“Nouvelle AOM's project is perfectly aligned with our architectural vision: resolutely focused on uses, kind to the environment and exemplary in terms of energy efficiency. The consortium's subtle architectural intent will allow the Tower to recapture the hearts of the people of Paris.”

The consortium of Nouvelle AOM (Nouvelle Agence pour l’Opération Maine-Montparnasse) was established to take on this project, consisting of three Paris-based firms working collaboratively: Franklin Azzi Architecture, Chartier Dalix Architectes and Hardel et le Behan Architectes. Their design breaks down the vertical focus of the original tower, replacing it with an emphasis on more approachable horizontal elements. A new facade will transform the atmosphere of the building, replacing opaque surfaces with transparent ones.

"When we took up the challenge of this exciting competition, our focus was on revealing the beauty of the Tour Montparnasse from the inside out. We achieved this by incorporating radically new uses and crafting a complete sustainable 'green' makeover of the facade. The aim is to make the Tower an icon of the 21st century energy revolution," explains Nouvelle AOM.

The €300 million project,, financed entirely by the tower's co-owners, is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Tour Montparnasse

Spectacular views unfold from this 210m-high smoked-glass-and-steel office block, built in 1973. A speedy elevator whisks visitors up in 38 seconds to the indoor observatory on the 56th floor, with multimedia displays. Finish with a hike up the stairs to the 59th-floor open-air terrace (with a sheltered walkway) and bubbly at the terrace's Champagne bar. This venerable building is undergoing a makeover – major renovation works started in early 2020 and are due for completion in 2024.

The tower also houses the city’s highest restaurant, Ciel de Paris .

I have a question regarding:

Opening hours & visit information, about my situation, around my visit.

The Observatory is open every day of the year from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays from October 15 to April 15 and 23. From April 16 to October 15, the Observatory is open every day until 11.30pm.

The last ascent is 30 minutes before the site closes.

You can change the time/date of your visit by clicking on the exchange link .The change can be made before the date and time of the originally scheduled visit.

You can change the time/date of your visit by clicking on the exchange link . The change can be made before the date and time of the originally scheduled visit.

Your ticket is non-refundable after the legal deadline of 14 days from the date of purchase. However, you can change your visit time by clicking on the exchange link .

People with reduced mobility can access the 56th floor and enjoy the view. Unfortunately, access to the terrace is only possible via the staircase. Only holders of a Mobility and Inclusion Card (in France, or equivalent abroad) benefit from a special rate. You will be asked for this document at the Observatory reception desk. Neither the “priority” CMI nor the “parking” CMI are taken into account for the fare reduction. Accompanying persons pay the full fare.

The Observatory welcomes children! There are a few things you should know before you come: if you come with a pushchair, it will be your responsibility throughout the visit, as neither the Observatory nor the tower has a pushchair parking area. To access the terrace, you have to climb 3 flights of stairs.

Dogs are tolerated as long as they remain in the visitor’s arms or in a bag. Dogs accompanying visually impaired visitors are of course accepted unconditionally.

You can bring your own luggage, but it must remain under your responsibility throughout the visit. For security reasons, luggage and bags are checked as soon as you enter the tower, and a second visual check is carried out before you enter the rooftop.

The Montparnasse train station is the nearest station equipped with a left-luggage service.

It is not possible to bring a “picnic” to eat or drink on the terrace or on the 56th floor. Café 360, located on the tour route at 56, offers a sweet and savoury menu for a break during your visit.

For safety reasons, it is strictly forbidden to take glass glasses onto the terrace. In this case, you need to tell the 360 Café that your drink will be served on the rooftop, so that you can be served in a plastic glass and gain access to the rooftop.

After you visit the Observatory, you can enjoy a meal at Ciel de Paris on the 56th floor, reserved directly with cieldeparis.com.

Tour de France 2024 - Stage 5 preview

July 3, 2024: Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne - Saint-Vulbas Plaine de l'Ain, 177.4km

Stage 5 Sprints

Stage 5 mountains.

The Tour will temporarily exit the Alps via Chambéry in stage 5. Starting in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the 177.4km route will head to Saint-Vulbas and will tackle only two climbs, the Côte du Cheval Blanc and the Côte de l’Huis, the latter taking place with 34km left to race, and one intermediate sprint interspersed between the two ascents.

The wide roads in the final 30 kilometres will be ideal for keeping a close eye on the breakaway riders. Saint-Vulbas regularly hosts stages of the Tour de l’Ain, usually early in the event with finishes that suit the sprinters, and the fast men are expected to battle it out for the winner’s bouquet.

When is the Tour de France 2024? How to watch and the latest odds with Tadej Pogacar the bookies' favourite

W ith five weeks to go until the 2024 Tour de France , Tadej Pogacar is the bookies’ favourite to win the yellow jersey — having won the Giro d’Italia emphatically.

The Slovenian is looking to add to his 2020 and 2021 Tour titles, which will be easier if rival Jonas Vingegaard fails to recover from crash injuries sustained in the Itzulia Basque Country tour earlier this year.

Danish rider Vingegaard, the 2022 and 2023 Tour winner, is facing a race against time to be fit and is not on the start list for next week's Critérium du Dauphiné — a warm-up race.

Other yellow jersey contenders Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič, who also both crashed on the Basque tour, have recovered to make the Critérium .

It could make for an interesting 111th edition of the race with or without its biggest names when the racing gets under way next month.

Here is all you need to know about the 2024 Tour de France.

When is the Tour de France 2024?

The Tour will begin with a hilly stage from Florence to Rimini in Italy on Saturday, June 29.

From there, riders will race for 21 days and have two rest days, culminating in a time trial in Nice on Sunday, July 21.

What is the route for the Tour?

After the four days in Italy, the Tour will cross the border to Valloire France on Tuesday, July 2 — the first high mountain stage.

It is the first time the race has had its Grand Depart in Italy. In another first, the riders will cross into San Marino on an early stage.

The Tour will finish outside Paris for the first time as the French capital is preparing to host the Olympic Games and the Paralympics this summer.

The final stage in Nice will be a time trial, meaning the general classification order will go down to the last day.

While usually the last day is something of a ceremony before a sprint, in 2024 it will be the second of two long time trials.

The tough route will take in summit finishes in the French Alps, featured earlier than usual, Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Stage nine will also feature 32 kilometres (20 miles) of gravel roads.

The severity of the stages and lack of flat finishes is bad news for sprinters including Britain's Mark Cavendish — who is seeking a record-breaking 35th Tour stage win.

Eight stages identified as ‘flat’ could give sprinters such as Cavendish reasons to hope — but only if they can stay in the race over the mountains and make time cuts.

The Manx rider told the Guardian : “There’s a few [sprint stages] but you’ve got to get to them — that’s the problem.

“It’s so hard. I’m in a bit of shock, actually.”

How can I watch the Tour de France?

ITV 4 and ITV X will be showing the Tour de France live from June 29 to July 21 with highlights shows every evening — usually at 7pm.

In previous years, the shows have been presented by Gary Imlach with input and commentary from David Millar and Ned Boulting.

ITV will also broadcast Critérium du Dauphiné highlights from June 4 to 11.

Who are the bookmakers’ favourites for the 2024 Tour de France?

Bookmakers are in an unusual position and taking bets on a race scenario with and without defending champion Jonas Vingegaard taking part.

Oddschecker does not have the option of betting on the Dane winning the yellow jersey.

However, the odds of other contenders do shorten if he does not make the start line.

The full list of riders will be confirmed nearer the start of the race.

These are the Oddschecker odds as of May 30 .

Tadej Pogacar: Odds to win with Vingegaard in race (4/11) without Vingegaard (1/2)

The Slovenian is in red-hot form and could add to his two yellow jerseys.

Primož Roglič: Both with and without Vingegaard (9/2)

Another Slovenian who has won the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana in the past but never the Tour de France, despite coming second in 2020.

Remco Evenepoel: With and without Vingegaard (10/1)

The Belgian has previously won the Giro and is an all-rounder.

Juan Ayuso: With and without Vingegaard (16/1)

The Spanish youngster is a teammate of Pogacar at UAE Team Emirates and could step up should misfortune strike the Slovenian but is otherwise on domestique duty.
