This is Jacksonville University

Congratulations! You're exploring colleges! Time to fill out forms and write essays then visit campuses and talk non-stop about... your future. But before we talk about YOUR future let's talk about THE future. This one? No. This one? Okay maybe this one.

Here's the thing: the future hasn't happened yet. They are ideas about it but they look less like answers and more like questions. Every question inspiring another question and that's how it's always been. They used to ask what happens when it's not done by hand, when there are machines, or software, or robots... Questions not answers!

And that's where you come in. You ask the questions that guide YOUR future, and find the answers that define THE future. Where should you go to get ready for that? Glad you asked!

This is Jacksonville University. It's not just a perfect place for sunny waterfront beauty shots. Although..

Here you choose the future you want. How? By defining it yourself. You customize your path and make it one-of-a-kind. Define it on your own terms: want to combine majors? go for it!

This is a place to turn ideas into plans, and plans into reality. It's a place to learn by doing, to do the research, and ask important questions, to dare and fail and try again and succeed and then take that success and attack the next big challenge: bringing marine life back from the brink, reimagining transportation, robotics, AI.. we are the next big thing.

What you take on and how you approach it? That's up to you!

You wanna build a future where you decide what impact you make? You come to the right place!

Visit us See Campus For Yourself

The quickest way to get to know us is to visit us!  Incoming freshmen students can earn our $1,000 visit grant for attending an on-campus tour! Can’t wait to see campus? Join Maddie Chin, a Marketing and Management major, for a virtual tour of Jacksonville University! We hope you have fun exploring your future home!

Visit Campus

Hi future Phins! I'm Maddie Chin and I'm a management and marketing major here at Jacksonville University. Today I want to show you our campus.

Williams Hall. Let's start with where you'll live. Botts and Williams Hall are exclusively for freshmen. First year housing is all about the experience. This is more than just a place to sleep, this is where you'll hang out study, play and make lifelong friendships. There's a kitchenette on the first floor for you to use and laundry is free. Just bring detergent!

Most students live with a roommate. Each room provides a bed, desk and chest of drawers with endless possibilities of how to set it up.

I was nervous about living with a roommate my freshman year but it was like a fun year-long sleepover. I'm really excited to come back for my fourth year living on campus this fall.

Kinne Center. The Kinne Center is where a lot of students hang out between classes to grab some food, study and meet up with friends. It's named after dr Francis Bartlett Kinne the former president of JU, she was the first female president of any university in Florida and she lived to be 102.

Inside is our Riverview dining hall where you can use your unlimited meal plan and our full service Starbucks which is open 80 hours a week.

Let's head next door to Davis Student Commons . Davis Student Commons is another place to hang out grab a bite and get in a workout. The fitness center on the first floor features all new equipment and a variety of group exercise classes. Davis Student Commons is also home to our new Jacks Esports Club team and gaming room. We have over 130 clubs and organizations at JU for everything from surfing to bass fishing.

River House. This is one of my favorite places to study and hang out. The River House built was in the 1980s. It was originally the JU president's house. In 2014 president Cost converted it into a riverfront hideaway for students and fun campus events. Students hang out by the fire pit, enjoy movie nights or hold club meetings here and sometimes you can catch a beach volleyball game. The pub offers burgers, sandwiches and salads plus beer and wine for those 21 and older.

College of Business. JU's Davis College of Business is home to our internationally ranked MBA program. For eight years CEO Magazine has ranked the program among the best in the world. Fun fact this is also home to our school of aviation and our world-class aviation simulator.

Jacksonville University is a tight-knit community, especially in the classroom. With an 11 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio, your professors will know you by name and can offer one-on-one mentoring. Here at JU, classes will never be taught by teaching assistants. Only professors with years of experience in their field.

JU has 58 majors and 67 minors, our top five declared majors are Nursing, Business, Kinesiology, Marine Science and Aviation.

One in every four students at JU is also a division one athlete and Dolphin Athletics offers modern training facilities that serve as a home away from home for our student athletes. The Rock Lacrosse Center is home to our nationally ranked lacrosse teams. The only division one lacrosse programs in Florida. Here they can work out, prepare for games study or just hang out between classes. All athletic events on campus are free to students.

Outdoor Events. At JU we take concerts up a notch by hosting them right on the water. The Dolphin Green and Larry Strom Amphitheater is where we hold some of our outdoor student events. One of my favorite traditions here is Porterfest, held every year on charter day which is JU's birthday. We celebrate with a day of service and a concert just for students.

This is one of the best kept secrets on campus. The Odec of the Marine Science Research Institute. It's tucked away on the banks of the river making a quiet scenic spot for studying or just relaxing by the water. The Institute offers research opportunities for students including a chance to tag and study great white sharks with our partners at Osearch.

Next door is the Rowing Center . Another popular waterfront spot for our rowing teams and the annual Rock the Docks event. Here at JU we do things a little differently, even relaxing. With hundreds of sunny days every year you'll find many students hanging out at areas just like this. It's one of the several recent projects that came from suggestions our students made to president Cost.

Areas like Nelms Plaza also feature dozens of charging stations for laptops and phones and the hammocks are my prime nap spot.

North Hall . If you plan to pledge a return to your sorority there's a good chance you live here in North Hall. Each Chapter has a hall for their sophomores, juniors and seniors, chapter president and a fully furnished chapter room. This is also where our faculty in residence lives serving as a resource for students throughout the year.

Terry Concert Hall. Terry Concert Hall is one of our fine arts performance spaces on campus where many of our musical ensembles and visiting artists perform throughout the year. This is also where we host political debates, guest lectures and other major events like our homecoming pageant for Miss Delfina and Big Man on campus.

Mascots. And last but certainly not least, meet our two mascots: Nelly and Dunkin. These statues were designed and sculpted by JU professor Jim Benedict and his class in 2014 and it's definitely the number one spot on campus for photos.

Phins. Alright future Phins, now you've seen all my favorite spots on campus but before you go you got to learn how to flip your phin! It's easy just hold up your left hand with your thumb pointer and pinky to make the letters "j" and "u". Phins up, guys! We're so excited for you to come visit us in person. Humanities & Languages

🌎 Humanities & Languages

History isn’t made by those who learn how things are done and follow suit. Difference makers think for themselves, imagine new possibilities, and tell different stories. That’s what the study of Humanities prepares you to do.

The program provides a strong foundation in literature, writing, and theory while also allowing students to tailor their major through electives. With courses ranging from young adult literature to film, graphic novels, creative writing, and more, you are sure to find something that appeals to you. Our students do well in any career because they have been trained in critical analysis, clear writing, and creative thinking.

Spoken in over 43 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, French is truly a world language. With over 220 million speakers, French is projected by some to be the world's most spoken language by 2050. The French major is perfect for students interested in: Pursuing careers in international law, business, or government service; Going into teaching, healthcare, or other fields that are increasingly connected to our local, immigrant communities; Teaching French at the elementary or secondary level; or A general humanistic education based on the language and literature of the French-speaking world

With a curriculum that encourages a full range of philosophical thinking, the Philosophy B.A. degree and Minor offer an ideal format for engaged learning. Students can look forward to developing habits of critical and rigorous thinking through reading, writing, and discussion of philosophical texts that explore what it really means to be a human being. Our students form close mentoring relationships with their professors, and frequent guest speakers and lecturers open them to new perspectives. A philosophy degree will both broaden your understanding and train you to think and write clearly, providing you with valuable skills that can be employed in virtually any career.

With the comprehensive B.A. degree and Minor program in Spanish, students attain language fluency and tailor classes to their interests. Courses in Spanish enable the student to learn the Spanish language and become familiar with Hispanic cultures. Majors in Spanish also study the outstanding figures of Spanish, Latin American, and Spanish American literature and civilization, and are prepared for graduate school, government service and careers in the private sector. At JU, we make sure nothing gets lost in translation.

The College Tour

Filming ‘The College Tour’ at Jacksonville University marks homecoming for host Alex Boylan

By Emily Bloch, The Florida-Times Union I April 11, 2022

tour jacksonville university

Gathered outside behind the Howard Administration Building, about two dozen students wearing Jacksonville University shirts and big smiles awaited cues from film director Bob Jury.

He waves his hands animatedly and calls out, “We’re rolling, big enthusiasm, here we go.” It marked day eight of filming for the school’s feature in “ The College Tour ,” an Amazon Prime series that spotlights colleges and universities around the country.

For the show’s host and executive producer Alex Boylan, this episode marked a special homecoming. Boylan is a JU dolphin himself, graduating in 1999.

“Coming back to film my alma mater, words cannot describe it,” he said. “JU has made me who I am to this day. Some of my best friends are students I went to college with. It’s been so meaningful.”

tour jacksonville university

Boylan created “The College Tour,” which is now filming its fifth season, out of necessity after struggling to tour college campuses with his niece during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The mission is to tell the story of college education,” Boylan told the Times-Union. “How do you do that with 2,500 campuses across the country? We try to be as diverse as possible [with a range of campus sizes and student populations].”

Other Florida schools featured on ‘The College Tour’

Jacksonville University is a private, liberal arts university with a population of about 4,000 students. Other Florida schools featured on “The College Tour” include Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, the University of Central Florida and Florida Tech.

Boylan describes the episode’s production as a collaborative effort between the school and his team.

“This is a six-month process to make one episode,” he said. “There’s two months of pre-production with teams meeting weekly, then on-location for almost two weeks and then post-production for two months. Then marketing and distribution — it’s a journey … we’re just finding great stories and bringing them to you.”

What to expect from The Jacksonville University episode

The Jacksonville University episode will feature a range of mini-profiles on current students, school leaders and alumni, all in the hopes of portraying a school’s vibe through viewers’ screens.

Students to be featured on this episode of “The College Tour” include a star lacrosse player, a sailing student with Olympic potential, a violinist, shark researcher and student organizers.

Sommer Kinsler, 19, is a freshman at JU who is being featured in the episode. She singlehandedly organized a Black History Month celebration this year on campus that has been lauded by school leaders.

“She wanted to do all the things and here she is. She hit the ground running at JU,” said school spokeswoman Laura Phelps.

As the group works on filming the episode’s intro and outro segments, Boylan chats with students. Show producers remark how he’s needed to do fewer takes than usual. He says it’s because this episode is personal and that he practiced the script 10 times more than he usually would.

“I’m usually on location two-to-three hours and out. This week, it’s been eight days,” he said. “It’s fun seeing the students and seeing them get nervous about being on TV. I just tell them ‘you’ve got this. It’s going to be weird, a bunch of people staring at you. But it’ll be great.'”

He adds, “that’s the key to television — big smiles and be happy.”

The one-hour episode is expected to air this summer.

City of Jacksonville shares details of extreme heat plan; new tool provides heat-health outcome info

Marcela Camargo , Digital Producer , Jacksonville

Ashley Harding , Reporter/Weekend Anchor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With temperatures rising to potentially dangerous levels this week , people in the 904 are feeling the sweltering heat.

Federal officials visited Jacksonville on Monday morning and toured one of the city’s cooling centers at the Main Library downtown.

The Assistant Secretary of Health for the U.S. and Human Services and the Deputy U.S. Surgeon General toured the cooling center on North Laura Street with Mayor Donna Deegan and local health officials.

According to the director of the library, that location can serve hundreds of people. And if needed, library staff can open up additional floors.

Following the tour, the city shared some details on this year’s extreme heat plan and the Department of Health’s new tool called the Heat and Health Index (HHI). This tool is designed to help communities prepare for extreme heat and prevent heat-related illness, especially among those most at risk.

According to the city, the HHI is the first nationwide tool to provide heat-health outcome information at the ZIP code level.

The existing EMS HeatTracker and the CDC Heat and Health Tracker help identify heat-related illnesses occurring locally and the 32209 ZIP code of Northwest Jacksonville is one of those neighborhoods most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Mauricio Dixon has lived in the area a few years and isn’t surprised to hear he and his neighbors are more vulnerable to heat problems.

“You go to the park, there’s no shade over there. You’ve got to find what you can find,” Dixon said.

Mayor Deegan said one key focus is making sure the infrastructure is up to speed, to help keep these neighbors safe from the heat in the long run.

“Something as simple as a tree canopy. That is a very big deal in terms of creating a situation where the heat can be 10 degrees or 12 degrees higher than it is in a place with a tree canopy,” Deegan said. “There’s all sorts of small things we can do. Retro-fitting buildings, making sure people have the roof campaign that we have going on.”

William Laster also lives in Northwest Jacksonville. Typically, he stays indoors but had to leave for a doctor’s appointment. His hope is for some relief.

“If they could do something about it, I’ll be glad. I’ll be happy if they can do something to keep the heat off of us,” he said.

The HHI will complement these tools by allowing people to plan for the impacts of heat and safeguard communities before extreme heat events occur, the city said.

Officials also took the time to let the community know that when a heat advisory is issued for Duval County, all of the cooling centers will be open for people in need.

Those cooling centers include 21 libraries, 42 community centers, 29 pools and 16 splash pads.

4th of July fireworks on the golf course? Count on it at the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic

tour jacksonville university

It’s fireworks time at the TPC Deere Run.

The PGA Tour has Fourth of July week all to itself with the John Deere Classic beginning on Thursday. But just because it owns the golf calendar doesn’t mean a field full of fireworks: Defending champion Sepp Straka is the highest-ranked player in the field at 24th in the world, followed by Sungjae Im at 29th and Jordan Speith at 32nd.

The winner on Sunday should plan on being deep in red numbers. Eleven of the last 14 winners of the tournament have posted 72-hole scores of 20-under or lower, led by Michael Kim’s 27-under in 2018, which won by eight shots. Straka shot 21-under.

Spieth and Johnson have won the tournament twice each and other winners in recent years have been other major champions Bryson DeChambeau, Brian Harman and Lucas Glover.

The rest of the major golf tours will return to action next week, including major championships on the LPGA and PGA Tour Champions.

PGA Tour: 4th of July at Deere Run

Event: John Deere Classic, Thursday-Sunday, TPC Deere Run, Silvis, Ill.

What's the purse?  $8 million ($1,440,000 and 500 FedEx Cup points to the winner).

Who won last year?  Sepp Straka.

How to watch on TV: Golf Channel (Thursday-Friday, 4-7 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 1-3 p.m.); CBS (Saturday-Sunday, 3-6 p.m.).

Area players entered: Tyson Alexander, Bud Cauley, Adrien Dumont de Chassart, Nico Echavarria, Ben Griffin, Lanto Griffin, Zach Johnson, Patton Kizzire, Russel Knox, Ben Kohles, Keith Mitchell, Raul Pereda, J.T. Poston, Jimmy Stanger, Davis Thompson, Carl Yuan.

Notable: Straka, a University of Georgia graduate who grew up in Valdosta, Ga., shot 62 in the final round and beat Brendon Todd and Alex Smalley by two shots. ... Johnson is the host of the tournament, which was once called the Quad Cities Open. ... The Tour moves to the British Isles for the next two weeks at the Scottish Open, then the Open Championship at Royal Troon, the final major of the season.

LIV Golf League

Next event: LIV Golf Valdearrama, Spain. July 12-14.

Notable: LIV Golf League members eligible for the British Open will get their tune-up at the site of the 1997 Ryder Cup.

Next event: Evian Championship, Evian-les-Bains, France, July 11-14.

Notable: Since becoming an LPGA major in 2013, the Evian has been won by players from eight countries and from six in the last six years. Defending champion Celene Boutier is the first player from France to win it.

PGA Tour Champions

Next event: Kaulig Companies Championship, July 11-14, Akron, Ohio.

Notable: The winner gets a berth in The Players Championship next March.

Korn Ferry Tour

Next event: The Ascendant, July 11-14, TPC Colorado.

Notable: Only one past winner, Will Zalatoris in 2020, has gone on to win on the PGA Tour.

What are the (golf) odds?

PGA Tour: SungJae Im is the favorite in the John Deere Classic at +1500, despite having never finished among the top 20 at Deere Run in two starts. He is ranked 29th in the world but has been on a roll of sorts. In his las six starts he’s missed two cuts but finished among the top 10 four times.

Straka is +1600, Jordan Spieth, Denny McCarthy and Aaron Rai are +2000, and Davis Thompson and Maverick McNealy are +2250.

JU's episode of "The College Tour" premieres on campus

August 18, 2022

Stars of Jacksonville University’s episode of The College Tour were treated to an exclusive premiere of the episode last week, complete with the Green Carpet experience and the big screen.

group of cast members at premiere

The students, and now some alumni, brought their family and friends to take part in the premiere. The hour-long episode was shown for the first time in Swisher Theater to the stars and their guests, along with JU students, faculty and staff.

The episode and season 5 finale officially premieres on Amazon Prime on Sept. 1, where prospective students and their families can watch to see what life at Jacksonville University is really like.

‘The show is hosted by Alex Boylan ’99, winner of “The Amazing Race.” Boylan is the host and producer of multiple award-winning shows, including “The Chef’s Table,” “Animal Attractions,” “CBS Buzz Tour,” and “The Steve Harvey Show.”

Senior marine science major Samantha O’Keefe starred in the show, sharing her experiences with the Marine Science Research Institute and how it’s shaped her as she prepares for graduation. She’s been able to customize her academic experience by adding a chemistry minor to her degree and taking a study abroad research trip to Belize.

O’Keefe said that is all part of why JU was “the perfect fit” for her, and why she was so eager to be part of the episode.

“JU has given me so many amazing experiences, especially in research,” said Samantha O’Keefe. “It’s definitely made me a better scientist and student and ultimately I just wanted to show the whole world why I love the Marine Science program here, and what makes me passionate every day.”

James Demps ‘22, a theatre arts major and business administration minor, starred in the show as a senior. Demps liv ed on campus all four years, and was part of numerous organizations, such as the Infinitus vocal group, residential life and Finprov  on campus. He shared his experiences with campus life on the show, and why he never regretted getting involved on campus.

sommer kinsler speaks to media

As a theatre major, Demps has spent his fair share of time on stage, but this was his first experience being on camera.

“It was wonderful, honestly the entire crew was so sweet,” he said. “I have a tendency to talk too fast and they definitely helped me a lot with that. It was a 10 out of 10.”

Although Sommer Kinsler was just a freshman at the time of filming, her passion for JU shined through. In her first year, she already hosted events on campus, such as the Black History Month concert, and was elected vice president of the Student Government Association. She wanted to attend a school where she could get involved “right away,” she said.

“It was a lot of fun, the crew was very supportive and genuinely wanted us to tell our stories and be true to ourselves,” Kinsler said. “JU is genuinely such a great place and I love that people are getting to learn about it.”
