Visiter vs Rendre Visite – To Visit in French
By: Author David Issokson
Posted on Published: January 1, 2024 - Last updated: January 22, 2024
The purpose of today’s lesson is to dispel some confusion over how to say “to visit” in French. Here’s the rule: The verb visiter is used for visiting places and rendre visite à is used for visiting people. For example, je visite Paris (I visit Paris) and je rends visite à mon ami (I visit my friend). This rule is set in stone and is a common mistake among students. Let’s jump right into the lesson!
visiter, rendre visite à
Visiter vs. Rendre Visite
Visiter – to visit a place.
Let’s start with visiter , which is specificially used for visiting places. Visiter is a regular ER verb, which means that its endings are the same as all other regular ER verbs when conjugated in the present tense. Here’s the present tense conjugation:
Je visite I visit Tu visites You visit Il, elle, on visite He, she one visits Nous visitons We visit Vous visitez You visit Ils, elles visitent They visit
In our first example, you’ll see that the definite article les (the preceding plural noun) precedes les Etats-Unis (the United States) . The rule for visiter is: visiter + definite article + country. For cities, the rule is visiter + city name.
Marie visite les États-Unis.
Marie visits the United States.
Je visite la France. Je visite Paris.
I visit France. I visit Paris.
Rendre visite
Our second verb for “to visit” is rendre visite . This is specifically used for visiting people. The grammatical construction is as followed: Rendre visite à + person.
Je rends visite à à I visit Tu rends visite à à You visit Il, elle, on rend visite à He, she, one visits Nous rendons visite à We visit Vous rendez visite à You visit Ils, elles rendent visite à They visit
This verb must be followed by the preposition à (meaning to or at) . Hence, what you’re really saying is “to render a visit to + person”. An Englsih equivalant is “to pay somebody a visit”.
For this construction, the verb rendre gets conjugated and visite is like a non moving part that does not get conjugated. Rendre is a regular RE verb.
Here are some example sentences using rendre visite .
Ils vont rendre visite à leurs beaux-parents demain .
They’re going to visit their in-laws tomorrow.
Pierre rend visite à ses copains en Suisse.
Pierre is visiting his friends in Switzerland.
Et voilà ! You know know how to say “to visit” in French and are clear on visiter vs. rendre visite . Now check out our lesson covering bosser (slang verb for to work) .
Sharing is caring!

French Grammar Points – How to Use the Verb Visiter
Which french verb to use when you’re visiting a place, a friend, or a professional..
In English, we can use the verb ‘to visit’ for a place, a person, or a doctor.
However, in French, le verbe visiter is only used when a traveler is doing some sightseeing, a guided tour, or a house :
Je visite la Tour Eiffel aujourd’hui . = I’m visiting the Eiffel Tower today.
Demain, je vais visiter le vieux quartier de Bruxelles = Tomorrow I’m going to visit the old quarter of Brussels.
Vous voulez visiter la maison ? = do you want to visit the house?
So what verb is used when we’re visiting a friend or a family member?
You’ll hear the French say rendre visite (you’re really saying that you’re paying a visit to someone):
Je rends visite à mon père ce soir = I’m visiting my dad tonight.
Nous rendons visite à Carla ce week-end = we’re visiting Carla this weekend
If you wish to tell someone to come and visit you, you can say:
Venez me rendre visite!
Note that the small preposition ‘ à’ has to follow after ‘ rendre visite’.
Boost your French with our Great Learning eBooks!
And what about visiting a doctor, a dentist, a lawyer, etc…?
Je vais voir le dentiste demain matin = I’m going to see the dentist tomorrow morning
Je vais chez le dentiste = I’m going to the dentist
Note that if you are going to use aller only, then you’ll need to follow with chez for indicating at someone’s home or professional place.
However, if you’re visiting colleagues, your boss, or clients, it’s best to just use aller voir.
Je vais voir un client = I’m goint to see a client
Je vais voir le patron = I’m going to see the boss
You’ll hear at times the word visite used as a noun such as : “ je vous souhaite une bonne visite !” (I wish you a good visit!) but again this will be in reference to a travelling related visit such as a visit of a museum.
Now I’ll give you a hint – when in doubt if you should use visiter , rendre visite or aller voir , you can always use aller voir for all the above contexts:
Je vais voir la Tour Eiffel
Je vais voir mon père ce soir
Je vais voir le docteur
Je vais voir le grand patron

How do You Say “I Visited my Grandma” in French?
If you answered with the verb “visiter,” you are wrong. This is part of my top 10 most common vocabulary mistakes , so read up to learn the true meaning and uses of the verb “visiter” in French.
1 – Visiter in French = To Take A (Guided) Tour
In French, the verb “visiter” means to take a (guided) tour. You do that to a museum, or a house, but that’s about it.
- À Paris, j’ai visité le Louvre . In Paris, I visited the Louvre.
- Marie m’a fait visiter sa nouvelle maison. Marie gave me a tour of her new house.
2 – Une Visite = a Visit / a Tour
Following the same logic, the noun “une visite” can mean the exact same thing as in English, “a visit”, but also “a tour” as in when visiting a place…
- La visite guidée du Louvre était très intéressante – the guided tour of the Louvre was very interesting.
- Je suis allée chez ma grand-mère pour une visite surprise – I went to my grandma for a surprise visit.
3 – Don’t Use Visiter + Part of France
To say “I visited Paris”, “I visited France”… as in you went there, well, we use the verb “aller” (“to go”). Not “visiter”, because it would imply you took a tour and saw everything. So it’s possible to use “visiter” + a tiny city that you actually toured with a guide, but not with a whole city. Well, it’s not so much that it is not possible, just that we don’t speak like that! We’d use aller.
- Je suis allée à Paris – I visited/ went to Paris
- À Paris, nous avons acheté un guide et nous avons visité les monuments historiques . – In Paris, we bought a guidebook and we toured the historical monuments.
4 – Visit + Person in French
Now, an even bigger problem, since this is so much used in English.
How would you say “I visited my friend,” or “my friend visited me?” in French?
Well, it’s not “visiter”. At least, not any longer. I’ve seen “l’ange Gabriel visita Marie” in the Bible… but we don’t use it in modern French.
This sounds particularly bad in French since “ visiter ” really brings up an exploration image… When a student tells me “J ‘ai visité ma grand-mère ” I have a flash of “Fantastic Voyage” where Raquel Welch and her team were shrunk to explore a patient’s body…
5 – Use Aller Voir + People to Say to Visit + People in French
So what do we use to say “to visit someone” in French?
Same answer as above: “aller” (or “venir” if the person is coming to you)
- Je suis allée (voir or chez) mon amie – I visited my friend.
- Mon amie est venue ( me voir or chez moi ) – My friend visited me. You’d use “chez” here if the visit happens at your/your friend’s house.
6 – To Pay a Visit = Rendre Visite à Quelqu’un
Now, I can hear you saying: “What about rendre visite à quelqu’un ? “ And you are right, this is an expression we use from time to time. We use it as often as an English speaker would use “pay a visit to someone”.
My experience shows, however, that this expression doesn’t work for most students. Basically, the idea of “visiter + people” kind of stays in their head, and they soon forget the correct expression and revert to saying “J’ ai visité mon amie ” (which is a mistake).
So to say “I visited someone” in French, your grandmother for example, say “J e suis allée voir ma grand-mère ” or “J e suis allée chez ma grand-mère “.
7 – How Do You Say “Come and Visit” in French?
This is a common expression in English, that doesn’t really have an equivalent in French however… Here, the notion of “visit” in English is not the one of taking a tour, but rather “visit us”, spend time with us, maybe it’s an invitation to sleep over : come see us, and you can stay with us (you don’t have to go to a hotel) kind of idea.
In France, we don’t have any expression like that. You cannot say: “venez et visitez”, that would make no sense at all in French. You could say “venez nous rendre visite” = “come pay us a visit”, that would be the closest translation.
I would probably say : “venez et restez chez nous quelques temps” : “come over and stay at our place for some time”.
In French, as in any language, there are many expressions such as this one that you cannot translate literally. The best is to learn the language in the context of a level appropriate story, so that you really get a feel for the expression and when to use them.
Furthermore, learning in a story makes you remember the words longer, since your brain remembers the story. I strongly suggest you check out my downloadable French audiobooks for all levels, available exclusively on French Today.

Students will want to take quite a bit of time studying this very useful verb because it has a variety of uses and meanings. It's also important to understand how to conjugate it into the present, past, and future tenses.
This lesson is a good introduction to voir and will give you a nice foundation for using it in conversation and within common expressions.
The Many Meanings of Voir
In a general sense, voir means "to see" as in, " Je vois Lise le samedi." (I see Lise on Saturdays.) or " Je vois deux chiens. " (I see two dogs.). In the right context, however, it can take on a slightly different meaning.

However, you can study it along with similar verbs like dormir , mentir , and partir , which add similar endings to the verb stem.
We're going to keep the verb conjugations simple in this lesson and concentrate on its most basic forms. The indicative mood is the most common of them all and should be your priority when studying voir . Using this first table, you can match the subject pronoun to the correct tense. For instance, "I see" is je vois and "we will see" is nous verrons . Practicing these in short sentences will help you learn them much faster.
The present participle of voir is voyant.
To form the passé composé of voir , you will need the auxiliary verb avoir and the past participle vu . With these two elements, you can construct this common past tense to match the subject pronoun. For example, "we saw" is nous avons vu .
While the indicative forms of voir should be your priority, it's a good idea to be able to recognize a few other verb moods. Both the subjunctive and conditional are used when the action of seeing is questionable or uncertain, for instance. It's also possible that you'll come across the passé simple or imperfect subjunctive, but those are mostly found in formal writing.
The imperative verb mood is used for commands and demands that are short and to the point. When using it, skip the subject pronoun. For example, Voyons! simply means "Come on! Let's see!"
Voir With Other Verbs
You can pair voir with other verbs to alter its meaning and fit the context of the sentence. Here are a few common examples of that in action.
Voir can be followed by an infinitive to mean "to see" literally or figuratively:
- As-tu vu sauter la petite fille? - Did you see the little girl jump?
- J'ai vu grandir ses enfants. - I saw (witnessed) his children growing up.
Aller voir means "to go (and) see":
- Tu devrais aller voir un film. - You should go see a movie.
- Va voir si elle est prête. - Go and see if she's ready.
Faire voir means "to show":
- Fais-moi voir tes devoirs. - Let me see / Show me your homework.
- Fais voir! - Let me see! Show me!
Voir venir is informal and figurative, meaning "to see something/someone coming":
- Je te vois venir. - I see where you're going (with this), what you're leading up to.
- Mais c'est trop cher! On t'a vu venir! - But that's too expensive! They saw you coming!
Se voir can be a pronominal or passive voice construction.
In the pronominal construction, se voir can be used as a reflexive verb, meaning "to see oneself." For instance, " Te vois-tu dans la glace ? " (Do you see yourself in the mirror?) or " Je me vois habiter en Suisse. " (I see / can imagine myself living in Switzerland.).
In a figurative sense, the pronominal reflexive of se voir can also mean "to find oneself" or " to be in the position of." An example of this may be, " Je me vois obligé de partir. " (I find myself obliged to leave.) When speaking about someone else, you might use it in a sentence such as, " Il s'est vu contraint d'en parler. " (He found himself forced to talk about it.).
Another type of pronominal verb is reciprocal. When used with se voir , it takes on the meaning of "to see each other." For example, you might say, " Nous nous voyons tous les jours. " (We see each other every day.) or " Quand se sont-ils vus? " (When did they see each other?).
When se voir is used in the passive voice . it can also have multiple meanings:
- to happen; to show, be visible. This has many uses, including the common phrases of, " Ça se voit " (That happens) and " Ça ne se voit pas tous les jours ." (You don't see that / That doesn't happen every day)
- se voir plus an infinitive means to be ___ed. For example, " Il s'est vu dire de se taire. " (He was told to be quiet) and " Je me suis vu interdire de répondre ." (I was forbidden to respond.).
Voir is used in a number of very common French expressions. One of the best-known is déjà vu , which means "already seen." You can also use it for short phrases such as on verra (we'll see) and voir venir (wait and see).
Though it means "to see," voir can be used to convey a positive or negative relationship between things as well:
- avoir quelque chose à voir avec/dans - to have something to do with
- ne pas avoir grand-chose à voir avec/dans - to not have much to do with
- ne rien avoir à voir avec/dans - to have nothing to do with
Since voir is such a useful verb, there are several idiomatic expressions that use it. In the most obvious sense, it's used to indicate sight, whether figurative or literal:
- voir la vie en rose - to see life through rose-colored glasses
- Voir, c'est croire. - Seeing is believing.
- Vous voyez d'ici le tableau! - Just picture it!
- n'y voir goutte - to not see a thing
- C'est quelque chose qui ne se voit pas tous les jours. - That's something you don't see every day.
- Il faut voir. - We'll (have to wait and) see.
- Il faut le voir pour le croire. - It has to be seen to be believed.
- J'en ai vu d'autres! - I've seen worse!
- ne voir aucun mal à quelque chose - to not see any harm in something
- Je voudrais t'y voir! - I'd like to see you try! I'd like to see how you would handle it!
You can also find voir in unlikely expressions. These are ones in which the English translation barely alludes to the act of seeing:
- C'est mal vu. - People don't like that.
- n'y voir que du feu - to be completely fooled
- en faire voir de dures à quelqu'un - to give someone a hard time
- faire voir 36 chandelles à quelqu'un - to beat the living daylights out of someone
- C'est tout vu. - It's a foregone conclusion.
- Quand on parle du loup (on en voit la queue). - Speak of the devil (and he appears).
- Essaie un peu pour voir! - Just you try it!

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said Thursday that U.S. President Joe Biden will make his first state visit to France next week after attending D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations in Normandy.
Macron will be hosting Biden and his wife Jill on June 8, the statement said.
Both presidents will discuss “the need for unwavering, long-term support for Ukraine” at a time when war has returned to Europe, 80 years after the landings that led to the liberation of France and the continent from Nazi Germany’s occupation, Macron’s office said.
In Normandy next week, major commemorations will draw 25 heads of state and government, along with dozens of World War II veterans , to honor the nearly 160,000 troops from Britain, the United States, Canada and other nations that landed on June 6, 1944.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is among those expected to attend .
Biden’s state visit will allow “close coordination” between France and the U.S. on world crises ahead of international events including the summit of the Group of Seven major economies next month in Italy and the NATO summit in Washington in July.
Discussions also will include climate-related issues and will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic, space and nuclear fields, the statement said.
Macron and his wife Brigitte went on a state visit to the U.S. in Dec. 2022.
Melinda French Gates says she's donating $1B to women's rights
Melinda French Gates will donate $1 billion over the next two years to women and family rights around the globe, including reproductive rights in the post-Dobbs era .
“As shocking as it is to contemplate, my 1-year-old granddaughter may grow up with fewer rights than I had,” French Gates wrote in a New York Times op-ed published Tuesday.
French Gates, who announced this month that she’d step down from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and who separated from Microsoft founder Bill Gates three years ago, cited a backdrop of political violence against women and maternal health concerns globally.
She pointed out that women across the U.S. have lost the right to terminate pregnancies under almost any circumstances.
"We remain the only advanced economy without any form of national paid family leave. And the number of teenage girls experiencing suicidal thoughts and persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness is at a decade high," she wrote.
"Despite the pressing need, only about 2 percent of charitable giving in the United States goes to organizations focused on women and girls, and only about half a percentage point goes to organizations focused on women of color specifically," she added.
French Gates noted that in her career as a women's advocate, "I have learned that there will always be people who say it’s not the right time to talk about gender equality. Not if you want to be relevant. Not if you want to be effective with world leaders (most of them men)."
She called such a perspective "frustrating and shortsighted," saying decades of research "make it clear that investing in women and girls benefit everyone."
"We know that economies with women’s full participation have more room to grow," she wrote. "That women’s political participation is associated with decreased corruption. That peace agreements are more durable when women are involved in writing them. That reducing the time women spend in poor health could add as much as $1 trillion to the global economy by 2040."
French Gates has already begun directing new grants through her Pivotal Ventures organization to groups that "protect the rights of women and advance their power and influence" in the U.S., including the National Women’s Law Center, the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the Center for Reproductive Rights.
In the fall, she’ll introduce a $250 million initiative focused on "improving the mental and physical health of women and girls globally" through an open call to grass-roots organizations.
French Gates also recently offered 12 people — including former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, athlete and maternal health advocate Allyson Felix and Afghan educator and women’s rights advocate Shabana Basij-Rasikh — their own $20 million grant-making fund to distribute as they see fit.
"I’m eager to see the landscape of funding opportunities through their eyes, and the results their approaches unlock," French Gates said.
French Gates said she never could have imagined being part of an effort like this when she was young.
"Because I have been given this extraordinary opportunity, I am determined to do everything I can to seize it and to set an agenda that helps other women and girls set theirs, too," she said.
The Gates Foundation, which French Gates spearheaded with her former husband — they were divorced in August 2021 — has made $77.6 billion of grant payments in its three-decade lifespan, making it one of the largest donor organizations in the world.
In 2015, French Gates founded Pivotal Ventures , an initiative focused on advancing opportunities for women and minorities in the U.S, especially in technology.
