“Uffizi Gallery in Florence is a world class museum with an incredible renaissance art collection. Enjoy a guided tour with a Local Specialist to make the experience more memorable, especially when in front of Botticelli’s stunning ‘Birth of Venus’ painting”

Pino, Travel Director

See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Enjoy the classic Italian summer in Italy’s picture-perfect Gulf of Naples. Famed for its crystal grottos, dramatic coastlines and endless glamour, our trips to Italy are complete with a day of freedom spent under a striped umbrella, watching sailboats pass by.

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

A collection of Christian artwork that spans centuries and stirs the soul is found in Rome’s Vatican Museums. From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.

Doge's Palace

Home to the leader of Venice from its opening in 1340, Doge’s Palace summarizes the sparkle of this city. An opulent example of Venetian Gothic architecture and home to numerous historical works, this museum is a must when you visit Venice.

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

Naples Tour Guide - Alessandra R.

Alessandra R.

Hi i'm alessandra, an enthusiastic lover of naples since 2010, i've been guiding adventurers through the rich tapestry of my city, sharing its history, legends, superstitions, and contradictions with passion and flair. as a traveller myself, i understand the importance of real experiences over canned tours. i seek out the genuine, the unexplored, and the authentic, ensuring every journey is rich with true immersion into the heart of the city. shakespeare must have had naples in mind when he claimed that all the world is a stage here, every street corner is the rowdiest open-air theatre, every local a character, and every moment a scene-stealer. so, forget about being a mere audience member—get ready to don your costume and ham it up as an active player in this uproarious neapolitan comedy                                                                                                                                  .

Campania Tour Guide - Gabriella P.

Gabriella P.

Ciao everyone, i started as tour guide 6 years ago, almost out of fun, out of curiosity. contact with people has always been important for me and being born in naples, that came very simple, almost mandatory. my city is full of history and traditions, of delicious things like pizza and "coffee suspended", because no one in naples has to feel so poor that can not afford a coffee. a city suspended between the paradise of the sea and the flames of vesuvius, one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world but from which you can enjoy one of the most striking views of the gulf of naples. and this volcano has given rise to what is still one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, pompeii. rich is the history as are the landscapes, as those breathtaking of the amalfi coast. the most beautiful part is to recognize the wonder in the eyes of the visit for the first time. the same wonder that i had felt and that i still feel today. this is the goal: give you the best experience showing all the beauties of this area. all my tours can be customized according to your requests, for example respecting the arrival/departure time of cruise ship, train or plane. what are you waiting for i'm waiting for you                                                                                                                                  .

Italy Tour Reviews

The Orvieto Cathedral

“ Wonderful Paulo ”

Paolo did an exceptional job leading our tour. He had done extra studying and amazed us with little known and amusing facts about the cathedral. My whole group was fascinated by him and his presentation. In addition, as a really pleasant surprise, he had made reservations for the eight of us for a delicious lunch.

Marilyn Z.

Dear Marylin, the whole group was an excellent and stimulating receiver for my efforts, it was a genuine pleasure. Then, a couple of people in the group had already visited Orvieto, so I wanted to give you more than a first time tour. See you next time!!

Keith K.

Essential Messina - walking tour

“ Caterina was great ”

Caterina met us early at the ferry from reggio, she spent over 2 hours giving us the tour of messina, she was very knowledgeable and professional, highly recommended.

Keith K.

Thank you for your kind words Keith. It was a great pleasure for me to show you around. Having guests like you and your party is what makes my job great! See you soon back in Sicily.

“ Connecting Several Generations of a Family ”

Maria was kind, funny, experienced and a very knowledgeable guide! She took a lot of time planning this tour. She researched and found relatives I haven’t seen in over 40 years and translated conversations with my family since I only speak English and they only speak Italian. Maria spent the whole day with us showing me where my parents used to live in Cantaloupo and Castelpetroso. These are very small towns in the mountains. We had one person in our group who had a food allergy and she found an excellent restaurant that was very accommodating! I would highly recommend Maria as a tour guide! Schedule a tour with Maria you won’t be disappointed!

Maureen R.

Dear Maureen, I am so glad you appreciated my services. It was really a pleasure for me to help you find your relatives and they were all so nice and kind. I felt as part of the family!!!! I hope to see you back soon! My best regards and a hug. Maria

Few countries are as universally beloved as Italy. From Palermo’s dazzling coast to Tuscany’s vineyards, every corner of the land is exaltedly charming and historically intriguing. Pisa’s leaning tower, Rome’s Colosseum, and Vatican City are quintessential tourist stops, but there’s far more to Italy than these must-see staples. You could travel for weeks and still not venture past the region you started in; a short hike in Cinque Terre leads to days in this coastal village, while a day trip to Sicily could leave you beach-ridden and wandering for weeks.

Regardless of the length of your stay or city of interest, Italy’s offerings engulf all of your senses. Watch the locals do their shopping, as their romantic Latin language plays a soundtrack for the cobblestone streets. Feel the touch of their beautiful Italian leather, as the smell of a nearby pizza leaves you numb with cravings. Speaking of pizza, there is no better Italian tradition than eating and cooking. Any Italian tour guide will tell you how much of their culture is grounded in its’ food, and eating is among Italy’s greatest pastimes. So eat, to enjoy Italy in it’s best way.

There's so much to see and do in Italy that it can feel a bit overwhelming to plan a trip that makes the most of the country's fabled history, art, architecture and cuisine – not to mention its 55-plus UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Guided tours are an efficient, hassle-free way to explore the country's top destinations and attractions . These Italy tours – considered the best by travelers and experts alike – vary by region, focus and method of transportation, but they all have one thing in common: informed guides ready to help you better appreciate your time in this beautiful European country.   While there are plenty of tours across Italy's most popular cities that last a few hours or an entire day, some travelers may be interested in multiday tours that visit several destinations or points of interest. On the third day, you'll head back to Rome. Hotel accommodations are included in the cost of the tour, as are ferry tickets to Capri and skip-the-line tickets to Pompeii, but most food and beverages are not.

In just 7 hours, you’ll be mesmerized by the Sistine Chapel, wowed at the Colosseum, and inspired at Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon—and much more. Your jam-packed day is stress free with skip-the-line tickets and transportation included, so you can just enjoy your guide's fascinating narrative of these iconic sites of Rome.

A group of tourists at the Colosseum with their guide from The Tour Guy.

  • Meet your guide outside Caffé Vaticano
  • Vatican Museums
  • Gallery of Maps

Sistine Chapel

  • St Peter’s Basilica
  • Piazza Navona
  • Trevi Fountain
  • Roman Forum
  • End your tour near the Colosseum

See the best of Rome in just one day with the help of your local guide who knows exactly what to see and how to get there efficiently. You'll meet your guide between TMark Hotel Vaticano and Caffé Vaticano, along with a small group of no more than 20 people. First up, you'll enter the Vatican with your skip-the-line tickets and see some of the most incredible art and statues in the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Next, you'll get to see the awe-inspiring St. Peter's Basilica and learn about its history, the art, and the famous figures buried there. Then you'll hop in a climate-controlled van and head to downtown Rome for your walking tour.

Get to know the city of Rome and its history as your guide shares stories about the ancient buildings, squares, and monuments you'll pass. You'll stop outside the Pantheon for an unforgettable view of this magnificent building (entry inside not included), wander through vibrant Piazza Navona, and stop at Trevi Fountain for pictures and free time for lunch (not included). After your break, you'll head to the crown jewels of Rome: the Colosseum and Roman Forum. Your tour will end either in the Colosseum or the Roman Forum, depending on your ticket time.

Rome in a Day Tour Description

Your 7-hour Rome in a day tour includes:

Skip-the-line tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

Entry to St. Peter's Basilica

Comfortable, climate-controlled transportation between the Vatican and city center

Guided walking tour to Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and more

Lunch break near Trevi Fountain (lunch not included)

Skip-the-line entry and guided tour of the Colosseum

Guided tour of the Roman Forum

Professional English-speaking guide for the entire tour

Maximum group size of 20

Please note that depending on the assigned entry time for the Colosseum, your tour might enter the Roman Forum first and end in the Colosseum.

Guided Vatican Museums Tour

After meeting your group nearby, you'll be able to skip the long general admission line and start exploring the impressive art collection at the Vatican Museums. Your guide will lead you on through the Vatican Museums, visiting the Candelabra Gallery, Gallery of the Tapestries, and Gallery of Maps. Admire the ancient Roman and Greek statues, the Flemish tapestries created by Raphael's students, and the gorgeous topographical depictions of Italy.

At the height of the Roman Empire, pontiffs rarely left Rome. In order to understand the Italian peninsula without endangering his life, Pope Gregory XIII commissioned 40 giant meticulous maps to be created for his use. Most of these maps measure more than 15 by 16 feet, and the end result is nothing short of spectacular.

You'll hear the stories behind these treasures from your expert guide as the Vatican secrets are slowly unveiled to you.

While you do not need to wait in the normal line, a shorter security line is still required for entrance. Short delays at the security check may occur during the busiest months of June and July.

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel likely rivals the Colosseum as the focal point of this Rome day tour. Until you stand beneath the chapel's frescoes, there’s no way to fully appreciate Michelangelo’s world-famous accomplishment. But you'll be wowed by the vision before you after your guide has helped you understand the details of its creation.

The Sistine Chapel is a place of worship, so speaking inside is prohibited. Your guide will explain the significance of Michelangelo’s artwork before entering.

Please note that to enter the Vatican's Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica, both men and women must cover their knees and shoulders. Otherwise, you may be refused entry to this portion of your Vatican tour. We understand the summers in Rome are hot, so a great idea is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way, you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.

St. Peter's Basilica

After you exit the Sistine Chapel, follow your guide directly to St. Peter's Basilica. Once you reach the outside of this incredible church, you'll listen to your guide share about the history and construction. They will give tips for what to look for before you head inside and explore on your own, such as Michelangelo's La Pietà , Bernini's Baldacchino.

Please note that St. Peter's Basilica is closed on Wednesdays for the Papal Audience and can occasionally experience other unexpected closures. If this happens, your guide will make up the time at other areas within the Vatican.

Rome Walking Tour on Foot

A trip through Rome wouldn't be complete without seeing some of the most famous fountains and piazzas. After being driven into Rome's historic center, it's time to set off on a walking tour of the city's historic sites. You'll follow your guide to the beautiful Piazza Navona to see the Fountain of Four Rivers, before seeing the outside the Pantheon, Rome's iconic dome with an open oculus.

Finally, head to the famous Trevi Fountain to see what is likely the world's most famous fountain. Remember to bring some coins to make a wish here! Your guide will make sure you know how to do it just right. Along the way, your super-knowledgeable local guide will show you some of Rome's hidden gems to help you get to know the city better. This is also a great chance to ask for restaurant recommendations and things to do with your evenings in Rome!

Skip-the-line Colosseum Tour

There are few more awe-inspiring places than the mighty Roman Colosseum. Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater, you'll have skip-the-line access to avoid the crowds of tourists waiting to enter. Your expert guide will set the scene for what it felt like to attend the thrilling events that took place inside the arena from epic gladiator fights to public executions held in front of eager crowds of more than 60,000 Romans.

This tour takes you to the first and second tiers of the Colosseum—areas reserved for seating Rome’s most elite classes during the Colosseum’s gladiator games. As you look around and picture what life must have been like here, your guide will enlighten you with intriguing stories of some of the Colosseum’s most gruesome events.

This product includes an entry ticket to the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine, for which our cost is 18 Euro per person.

The Roman Forum, Downtown Ancient Rome

The ancient Roman Forum is full of sprawling ruins that once served as the political and commercial hub of the powerful Roman Empire. This is where Rome’s most important decisions were made. Trace the footsteps of Julius Caesar and visit popular sites such as the Arch of Titus and Senate House, as your guide tells you about the daily life and seismic events that one happened here.

On this jam-packed tour, you won't do a deep exploration of these ruins, but your guide will make sure you see the highlights as they explain the most interesting details about life in the Forum. It's the best way to get to know what Roman life really was like for the rich and famous of Rome.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to bring?

Government-issued ID for entrance to the Colosseum. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen in the summer months, and some coins for making wishes in the Trevi Fountain. Since this is a walking tour that includes a visit to the Colosseum and Roman Forum (archeological sites with uneven terrain), please also wear comfortable shoes. Please be prepared to cover your knees and shoulders in places of worship such as the Sistine Chapel.

Is lunch included in the price of the tour?

Lunch is not included, but you'll have free time to grab a bite and rest assured that your guide will point out several good places to eat in the Trevi Fountain area.

Do tours always follow this exact itinerary?

Not necessarily. Guided tours of major attractions are dependent on ticket assignments. Most of our Rome in a Day Tours start at the Vatican, but you might enter the Colosseum before or after the Roman Forum.

What if I have concerns about my mobility on this tour?

If you have any doubts about your mobility, you might prefer a more comfortable Private Rome in a Day Tour . Private tours offer more flexibility and the ability to accommodate your personal needs especially on heavy walking tours that include sets of stairs and extremely uneven terrain.

How comprehensive are the Colosseum and Vatican sections of this tour?

In the spirit of seeing as much of Rome as possible, the Colosseum and Vatican sections of this tour are a little shorter than some tours. But don't worry, you'll see all the most important things at each location!

Does this tour include pickup at my hotel?

This tour does not offer pickup at any hotels. You'll meet your guide at the meeting point listed on your confirmation voucher.

What happens if it rains?

We run our tours rain or shine. If rainfall is extremely heavy, the Colosseum management sometimes closes the certain areas for safety reasons.

Where does this tour end?

The tour usually begins at the Vatican Museums, so it ends at either the Colosseum or the Roman Forum. The order is dependent on the entry times provided by Colosseum management.

Does this tour go to the Arena Floor?

No, on this tour, you'll visit the first and second floors of the Colosseum. You can also book a Colosseum Arena Floor tour if you want to experience that opportunity!

Is there a dress code to enter the religious sites on this tour?

We ask both men and women to cover knees and shoulders, otherwise the Vatican might refuse entry to religious sites and you’ll miss out on a portion of your tour. We understand the summers in Rome can be hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.

Is photography allowed in the Sistine Chapel?

No, the Vatican requests that no photos or videos be taken inside the Sistine Chapel.

Does this tour always include St. Peter's Basilica entry?

St. Peter's Basilica is always closed on Wednesday mornings for the weekly papal audience. If you book a tour on Wednesday, your guide will make up the time in other fascinating areas of the Vatican.

Will my tour time change?

Yes, the start time of your tour is likely to change. Please keep your day open. Your final start time will be sent 5 days before the date of your tour.

Can I cancel if my schedule changes?

No. Rome in a Day Tour with Colosseum and Vatican Museums is a non-refundable tour.

Can I bring luggage with me on this tour?

It will not be possible to bring your luggage on this tour as the Vatican museums and Colosseum only allow small backpacks inside and will not permit anything bigger. The transfer during this tour is also used only once and no personal items are allowed to be left behind. You will need to arrange alternative options to store your luggage as unfortunately on this tour it will not be possible to bring them.

What is the cancellation policy for this tour?

Following terms and conditions for the Vatican and the Colosseum, this tour is non-refundable.

Exploring Venice: The Best Times to Visit and What to Expect

Venice, with its winding canals, historic landmarks, and vibrant culture, is a dream destination for many. However, timing your visit can significantly affect your experience. Each season in Venice has its own charm, from the bustling summer months to the serene winter periods. In this detailed guide, we’ll explore the best times to visit Venice, considering weather patterns, crowd levels, and special events.

Venice's narrow street

Spring in Venice: A Blooming Wonder

Spring is arguably one of the best times to visit Venice. From March to May, the city awakens from its winter slumber. Temperatures are mild, ranging from 8°C to 17°C (46°F to 63°F), making it perfect for long strolls through the city’s narrow streets and along its charming canals. The blooming flowers add a splash of color to Venice’s already picturesque scenery.

During this period, the tourist crowds are moderate, allowing for a more relaxed sightseeing experience. Key events during spring include the Festa della Sensa, a traditional ceremony commemorating Venice’s historical maritime dominance.

Summer in Venice: Bustling and Vibrant

Summer, from June to August, is the peak tourist season in Venice. The city is bustling with visitors from all over the world, and the atmosphere is lively and vibrant. Temperatures can soar to a high of around 30°C (86°F), and the canals shimmer under the bright sun.

However, with the beauty of summer comes the challenge of handling crowds and higher accommodation prices. Major events like the Venice Film Festival and Festa del Redentore draw in even more visitors. If you prefer a lively atmosphere and don’t mind the bustling crowds, summer is a fantastic time to experience Venice.

Fall in Venice: A Cultural Delight

Fall, from September to November, is another wonderful time to explore Venice. The temperatures are pleasantly cool, ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). The city is less crowded compared to the summer months, and the golden hues of autumn add a magical touch to the Venetian landscape.

In addition to comfortable weather, visitors can enjoy the Venice Biennale, one of the world’s most prestigious cultural exhibitions. This period offers a perfect blend of pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and rich cultural experiences.

Venetian Carnival

Winter in Venice: Serene and Quiet

Winter, from December to February, offers a unique charm not found in other seasons. The city is at its most tranquil, with fewer tourists and a calm, serene atmosphere. Temperatures range from 0°C to 8°C (32°F to 46°F), and you might even see Venice dusted with a picturesque layer of snow.

One of the highlights of visiting Venice in winter is the famous Venetian Carnival, typically held in February. This event features elaborate masks, costumes, and vibrant festivities, making it an unforgettable experience. Despite the colder weather, winter in Venice has a magical quality that is perfect for those seeking a quiet, authentic experience.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: arrival and city exploration.

Start your Venetian adventure by settling into your chosen accommodation. Once unpacked, take a leisurely stroll through the streets of Venice, marveling at the unique architecture and charming canals. Visit the bustling Piazza San Marco and the iconic St. Mark’s Basilica.

Day 2: Museums and Art Galleries

Dedicate the second day to exploring Venice’s rich artistic heritage. Visit the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. In the evening, enjoy a quiet dinner at a local trattoria, sampling authentic Venetian cuisine.

Day 3: Gondola Ride and Island Hopping

No visit to Venice is complete without a gondola ride. Spend the morning gliding through the canals. In the afternoon, take a boat to the nearby islands of Murano, famous for its glass-making, and Burano, known for its colorful houses and lace production.

Day 4: Local Markets and Secret Spots

Spend your fourth day exploring the local markets, such as the Rialto Market, where you can find fresh produce and local delicacies. In the afternoon, wander off the beaten path to discover Venice’s lesser-known attractions, such as the peaceful Dorsoduro district.

Day 5: Departure

On your last day, take a final stroll through the city, perhaps visiting a favorite spot one last time before packing up and heading to your next destination.

Venice Dorsoduro District

Choosing the best time to visit Venice depends on your personal preferences. Each season offers a unique perspective of the city, from the lively and crowded summer months to the serene and tranquil winter period. Spring and fall are often favored for their mild weather and manageable crowds, making them ideal for those seeking a balanced travel experience. Whether you are exploring the bustling markets, enjoying a quiet gondola ride, or participating in vibrant festivals, Venice promises unforgettable memories all year round.

Remember to plan ahead, considering the seasonal highlights and potential challenges of each period. With careful planning, you can ensure that your visit to Venice is filled with enchantment and wonder, no matter the time of year.

  • The First MICHELIN Key Hotels: All the Keys in Italy

The MICHELIN Guide announces top honors for Italian hotels in 2024.

Rome Hotels Italy Florence MICHELIN Keys

the tour guide italy

On May 7, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in Italy. This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in Italy includes 8 Three Key hotels, 31 Two Key hotels, and 107 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Velona's Jungle Luxury Suites — Florence

Under 10 Rooms: The Tiny Keys Reign Across Italy

Expect: Bold, proprietor-driven design themes, special experiences, and hyper-personal service. The tiny hotels that pepper the cities and countryside might get lost on lists full of castles and palazzos, but these little boutiques with ten rooms or less are some the most creative and satisfying accommodations in all of Italy. It’s a given that you’ll find places like these in the Tuscan countryside ( Siena House and Follonico Suite B&B — both with just six bedrooms), but don’t miss the gems in the cities. Vico Milano is a seven room space filled with dazzling design furniture and contemporary art. Velona’s Jungle Luxury Suites is a pocket-sized jungle-themed luxury boutique full of animal-print upholstery and peacock-feather prints. Both are independently owned and marvelously compact.

Lupaia — Torrita di Siena

Pick One: A Castle or a Farmhouse Hotel in Tuscany

Two iconic options in Tuscany earned a bevy of Keys: the castle hotel and the classic farmhouse. The former speaks for itself — ancient fortifications that were once private residences, built to house the handsomely titled, and fortified against attack. Towers, turrets, and crenellations give way to handsome wine cellars and vineyard views. Look to Castello di Casole for a masterclass in how to convert a thousand-year-old estate into a historically preserved, contemporarily luxurious hotel. Meanwhile, the motif of the Tuscan farmhouse has been emulated throughout the world — but there’s nothing like the real thing. Hotels like Lupaia and Conti di San Bonifacio make farmhouse charm into nothing less than a work of art.

High Drama: Hotels on the Seaside of the Amalfi Coast

It’s profoundly satisfying to us that one of the most impressive places in the world has among the world’s most impressive hotels. On the Amalfi Coast, where natural cliffsides tumble down into an endless Italian sea, hotels like Palazzo Pascal and Le Sirenuse host guests in miraculous buildings that served for centuries as aristocratic homes over the water. Casa Angelina and Borgo Santandrea sport more modern builds. In either case, the views are perennially spectacular. Also read: High Drama in the Seaside Hotels of the Amalfi Coast

Sicily’s Summer Season Interrupted As Two Volcanoes Violently Erupt Simultaneously

It can be seen from nearly every location in Sicily. Its iconic and massive, cone-shaped presence looming over the city of Catania on the eastern side of the island: Mount Etna has drawn seismologists, volcanologists, scientists, and yes, tourists en masse to its peaks and craters to study, watch, and sit in awe of its ever-changing presence, and its unpredictable volatility.

Off the northern side of Sicily, one of the archipelago Aeolian islands known as Stromboli sits in the Tyrrhenian Sea and is occupied mainly by Mount Stromboli, another active volcano. During this year's highly anticipated summer season, both volcanoes experienced significant volcanic activity throughout June, resulting in simultaneous, violent eruptions on the same day, putting the island of Sicily on high alert.

Sicily & Surrounding Islands On Alert After Two Volcanoes Erupt On The Same Day

In June 2024, as Sicily’s summer season went into full swing, intensifying volcanic activity was recorded from Europe’s tallest volcano, Mount Etna, as well as its northern neighbor, Mount Stromboli throughout the month, resulting in both volcanoes violently erupting on the 4th of July .

Tall clouds of ash and lava spewed from Etna, resulting in the closing of the Catania airport on the eastern side of the island. At the same time, Mount Stromboli’s eruption led Italy’s Civil Protection Department to place the island of Stromboli on red alert.

10 Amazing Things You Didn't Know About Mount Etna

Did you know Mount Etna's volcano forms snow, and it is a major source of income? If these amaze you, here are Mount Etna's facts not widely known.

Sicily, its residents, and the tourists that had converged upon its popular island for the summer kept a watchful and cautious eye on both volcanoes throughout July into August, as Italy’s annual, and very popular, summer holiday known as Ferragosto (August 15), rapidly approached.

While Mount Stromboli was only simmering, Mount Etna was ramping up, leading to the release of another violent eruption. On the evening of 14 August, spewing lava, gas clouds, and ash rose high into the evening sky, and was visible all around Sicily.

Mount Etna's latest, massive eruption shut down the Catania airport for the second time this season, the day before Italy’s famous summer holiday: Ferragosto.

At the time of publishing this article, both Mount Etna and Mount Stromboli continue to display volcanic activity and periodic eruptions.

While it’s not uncommon for both volcanoes to display volcanic activity and eruptions throughout the year, questions have been raised about their simultaneous eruptions and the possibility of the two volcanoes being linked somehow. However, scientists quickly dismiss those concerns, assuring us it's merely coincidental.

The Best Tours of Venice To Take

The Italian city of Venice is a popular destination steeped in history. There are plenty of unique things to do, great food to try, and top attractions to explore from St. Mark’s Basilica to the Doge’s Palace, Rialto Bridge, and the Islands of Murano and Burano. In this article, we share our best Venice tours for an unforgettable experience of the Floating City.

Ultimate Venice in a Day with Murano and Burano

  • Venice in a Day with Gondola Ride

St. Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace Half-Day Tour with Gondola Ride

Venice local evening food tour in cannaregio, murano and burano in a half-day boat tour, small group dining experience at a local home in venice.

Seeing Venice in a day is a worthy goal, but there’s so much to explore beyond the main island. If you want to pack in as much as possible on your trip to Venice, then this 9-hour tour is ideal for you.

Start with a guided tour and skip-the-line access to St. Mark’s Basilica, also known as the Church of Gold. You’ll see why the moment you step inside! Next, you’ll head to the infamous Doge’s Palace where you’ll also skip the lines to see what is probably the world’s most expensive staircase, thanks to the gold ceiling. Learn about the courtroom where verdicts were handed down and see the largest room in Italy.

No trip to Venice is complete without a gondola ride, so we’ve included that on this day tour as well. And after a break for lunch on your own, you’ll then meet up with your small group and guide to take a private water taxi out to the islands of Murano and Burano. This is the most ideal way to see Venice’s other islands as the public water bus is hot, crowded, and slow.

You’ll see a live glassblowing demonstration up close in Murano, done the same way it’s been done for literally hundreds of years. And in Burano, you’ll see an intricate lacemaking demonstration before having time to take pics of all the colorful houses here.

Highlights:

  • 9-hour tour
  • Skip-the-line guided tour of St. Mark’s Basilica
  • Skip-the-line guided tour of Doge’s Palace
  • Go on a traditional gondola ride
  • Private water taxi to Murano and Burano
  • Glassblowing and lacemaking demonstrations

Venice in a Day Combo Tour With Gondola Ride

If you want to see the most important attractions in the main city of Venice, this tour is your best bet. You’ll see everything from St. Mark’s Basilica to the Doge’s Palace and areas beyond Rialto Bridge. Grab your favorite walking shoes and clear your schedule for this 6-hour tour, because you’re going to see Venice in a day .

Prepare yourself for breathtaking sights like St. Mark’s Basilica, also known as the “Church of Gold,” and the iconic Rialto Bridge from a few vantage points. Your guide will explain the history of these amazing sights and show you hidden gems in the surrounding neighborhoods.

You’ll also get to skip the line and go behind the scenes at the Doge’s Palace, where powerful magistrates ruled until the late 18th century. You’ll explore the Bridge of Sighs, as well as some prison cells, not to mention the beautiful art and design in the rest of the palace.

Of course, you’ll also be able to check a Venice gondola ride off your bucket list. Afterward, you can ask your guide for some amazing suggestions on where to grab a bite to eat, or just relax knowing that you’ve had a day full of unrivaled culture and history.

  • 6-hour tour
  • See the highlights of Venice in a day
  • Skip-the-line guided tour of St. Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace
  • Walking tour of Venice’s quieter areas and hidden gems
  • Traditional Gondola ride

Not ready to book a tour? Check out how to see Venice in a day .

For anyone who only has part of a day in Venice or who prefers shorter guided tours, we’ve created the perfect tour for you! This 3.5-hour tour gives you skip-the-line entry to both of Venice’s top attractions at St. Mark’s Square. You’ll start at the impressive basilica where you’ll see the tomb of St. Mark.

Next, head to the Doge’s Palace to explore a little of Venice’s darker history. The doges at this palace ruled Venice until the late 18th century and had a reputation of tyranny that helped make Venice the powerhouse of the region. You’ll head to the dungeons to see the original cells and the famous Bridge of Sighs.

Along the way, you’ll also get to enjoy incredible art and the most famous rooms (and stairs) at this palace. To top it all off, you’ll have a 30-minute gondola ride along the Venetian canals. It’s the perfect way to end your tour of Venice’s highlights.

  • 3.5-hour tour
  • Traditional gondola ride

If you want to immerse yourself in Italian culture, food is one of the best ways. On this 2.5-hour Venice food tour , your English-speaking foodie guide will take you around the city to try authentic Venetian food and drink.

Enjoy cicchetti (savory snacks) along with a glass of wine at bacari , the local wine bars. The tradition of pairing the two goes back centuries. People would visit the bacari at all hours of the day and eat cicchetti along with their drinks to ensure they don’t get too tipsy.

Cicchetti isn’t the only thing you’ll try, you’ll also enjoy some of the city’s best pasta, along with prosecco, Campari spritz, and gelato. This tour also includes a stop at a bacari which is a traditional Venetian wine bar. All in all, you’ll learn a lot and taste a lot, and hopefully, make some new travel friends!

  • 2.5-hour tour
  • Short walking tour of Cannaregio
  • Sample assorted cicchetti dishes
  • Visit a bacari wine bar
  • Enjoy a traditional sit-down dinner
  • Stop for gelato

There’s more to Venice than just Venice. In fact, there are 118 islands that make up the whole area of Venice. If you’re up for an adventure, then head out to Murano and Burano to see some truly historic crafts.

The cheapest way to the islands is to book a ride on the public water bus, but it’s slow, and often hot and crowded. For a better experience, you’ll appreciate this tour that includes a private water boat to get you to both islands quickly. Best of all, your tour guide will accompany you and tell you all about the islands as you travel.

A stop in Murano will take you to a live glassblowing demonstration. This tradition dates back to the 5th century, but out of concern about fires, these craftsmen were moved from the main island to Murano where they’ve continued traditions for centuries. Watch them up close and feel the heat from the furnaces!

Next you’ll head to Burano. You’ve probably seen amazing Instagram photos of these colorful houses here. And now you’ll get to take selfies of your own! In addition, you’ll get an exclusive stop at a lacemaking demonstration that the public doesn’t have access to. No doubt that a trip to these islands make up one of the best Venice tours.

  • 4-hour tour
  • Round-trip transportation on a private water boat
  • Live glassblowing demonstration in Murano
  • Live lacemaking demonstration in Burano

One of the best ways to truly immerse yourself in a culture is through its food. Restaurants, cafes, and markets are great places, but most of the meals we eat throughout our lives are outside these public spaces and instead in the home.

To be invited into a local home, taught their cooking style, family recipes, and personal twists on classics, this is one of the most fabulous treats any traveler can have.

We have teamed up with a group of local cooks who welcome you into their homes for an unforgettable experience. Your host will welcome you in with a glass of wine, then take a deep dive into Italian cuisine during a small group cooking demonstration for you and your fellow foodies. Watch as your host, equipped with years of experience, crafts one of the dishes featured in your 3-course meal. You’ll witness firsthand the perfected combination of stirring, seasoning, and simmering that goes into authentic Italian cooking. Throughout the interactive demo, your host will also unveil their well-guarded culinary secrets and unique tips and tricks that real Italian nonnas have passed down.

It is a unique and immersive experience that foodies and travelers will love, and one of the best Venice tours we have.

  • Aperitivo including prosecco and nibbles
  • 3-course menu including starter, pasta and desserts
  • Drinks including water, wine and coffee
  • Cooking demonstration
  • Small Group experience with a certified host
  • Enjoy warm Italian hospitality
  • A Warm Welcome to an Italian Home
