An unforgettable adventure awaits in developer Thatgamecompany’s acclaimed hit Journey. Make your way to a distant mountain by skimming across sand dunes, scaling snowy cliffs, and exploring ancient ruins. Your magical scarf will power you over obstacles—though if you need a hand, link up with fellow travelers for fleeting moments of cooperative joy. Staggeringly beautiful and timelessly poignant, Journey is a trip well worth taking.

Incredible game, 1 issue with iOS port

The first time I played Dune on PS4 was very recently, and I honestly had a spiritual experience, a first for me with a video game. The visuals and gameplay are so simplistic but even without any writing or dialogue they tell a very moving story, with a dreamlike sense of sacredness and a deep touch of humanity on a desolate alien world. The multiplayer aspect of the game is what really binds you to the experience, in my opinion. On this iOS version, you’ll find the multiplayer experience is lacking. I’m not sure why, but you simply can’t find another player to travel with you for the entire length of the journey. It may just be that because this is a mobile platform, people are swiping the app off in the middle of things, although I can’t see this being a “pick up, play, put down” kind of game, so I’m guessing it’s a connectivity issue. This is an older game with kind of a niche following so I can see why, with “Sky: Children of Light” doing so well now, Journey is a low priority, or maybe there is some issue that makes multiplayer of this kind harder on iOS for reasons I wouldn’t understand as a layperson. Journey gets 5 stars for PlayStation, and I could easily say 10/5 stars, but 4 stars from me for iOS because you typically lose the companionship aspect of the gameplay.

Truly Fun and Emotionally Powerful

A really enjoyable game. There can be so much toxic behavior in the gaming world sometimes, but this isn’t that kind of game. I feel lonely very often, and don’t often see friends or socialize; I didn’t know this game had multiplayer when I started playing it, and had played through it maybe six times alone, so I was quite shocked when I ran into someone. See, I have a disability; I cannot feel my hands, and the muscles in my fingers don’t work, but the player I ran into patiently helped me and stayed with me even though I am very clumsy, and repeatedly fell off of a tall structure at one point. We had to start over many times because of me before we succeeded, and it would be very understandable if it was frustrating for them, since they wouldn’t know why I was struggling with certain things that would probably have been much easier if my hands worked, and yet they still played through that part with me. After reading more about it, I know this game’s designers intended for their to be an emotional connection bond/connection formed between anonymous players who run into each other, and that the lack of text or speech comms is meant to add to that, and for me, that was an incredibly powerful experience. Also, it’s pretty cool that if I can play this game on iOS, then it is probably pretty accessible for other players with motor disabilities that affect their hands.

Q: Does the Rapid TRIO only charge through MagSafe cases? What about other cases?

A: For the iPhone to attach magnetically, a MagSafe-compatible case must be used, or you can charge your phone without the case. Alternatively, use the included magentic ring to add MagSafe compatibilty to your phone or case.

Q: Does the charger support the latest Apple Watch Ultra 2 & 9?

A: Yes, the Rapid TRIO works with Apple watch series 1-9, SE and Ultra 1/2.

Q: Can I use with my AirPods Pro?

A: Yes, the Rapid TRIO works with AirPods Pro 1/2 and all generation of AirPods which support wireless.

Q: How do I know if my case is MagSafe?

A: Check the specifications on your product’s packaging or online. Most MagSafe cases have a visible circular ring on the inside or outside of the case to indicate it in MagSafe compatible.

Q: Will it charge my Google Pixel earbuds?

A: If your earbuds support Qi wireless charging, yes.

Q: Will it work for an iPad as well?

A: No. Wireless chargers aren’t ordinarily designed to charge tablets. The Rapid TRIO is designed to wirelessly charge your smartphone, smartwatch, earbuds, and a second phone.

Q: Will the Rapid TRIO charge my iPhone 14?

A: Yes. It will charge iPhones 12 and onwards. If you have an earlier model iPhone, which is wireless charging compatible, you can attach the magnetic ring that comes in the box of the Rapid TRIO to equip it for MagSafe-compatible charging.

Q: Does the magnet have any side effects for my phone?

A: No. Today’s smartphones and accessories are unaffected by magnets. iPhones 12 and onwards feature magnets inside too.

Q: Can I charge my Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy with the Rapid TRIO?

A: Yes. The Rapid TRIO includes a MagSafe-compatible magnetic ring you can stick to the back of any wireless charging enabled Android phone to draw charging from the charger pad.

Q: How much power does my wall charger need to power the Rapid TRIO ?

A: We recommend a minimum 20W USB-C Power wall charger. You can purchase the Journey 30W Mini USB-C charger as well.

Mobile Game ‘June’s Journey’ Brings in $1 Billion in Revenue, Makes History

The game's makers attribute their success to its target demographic: women. ninety percent of the game’s dedicated player base are women, with the majority of them being over the age of 55.

A video game made for mobile phones has made $1 billion in lifetime gross revenue and is the fastest German-made mobile game to do so.

Playtika's Berlin-based studio Wooga announced its flagship game, “June’s Journey,” which achieved the incredible milestone on Nov. 16, six years after its global launch. Additionally, the game is the “#1 highest-grossing hidden object game worldwide,” according to its makers.

The game's success is attributed to its ability to captivate “a mature female demographic,” according to a press release from Playtika, which says that “remarkably,” 90% of the game’s dedicated player base are women, with the majority of them being over the age of 55.

“By staying attuned to player feedback, delivering fresh weekly content and enhancing social features… Wooga has fostered an exceptionally loyal and engaged player base,” Playtika says.

The game has players stepping into the role of an amateur detective named “June Parker” set in the world of America’s roaring 1920s. Players do their best to spot “clues” in provided scenes by clicking on them after being provided hints. Finding clues completes stages and progresses the player to new levels and puzzles.

Players are invited to make in-game purchases to aid in their quest, and that’s how Playtika has made so much money off the game. Wooga’s managing director says that the game studio’s journey has been “nothing short of remarkable.”

"Six years ago, we strategically prioritized the development of story-driven casual games, setting a precedent in the gaming industry. We are now a key player in this category, in large part due to the worldwide popularity of June's Journey that we are celebrating today, “ Nai Chang, Managing Director at Wooga, said in the release. “It's not just about the genre; our exceptionally diverse workforce also plays a crucial role. We believe innovation thrives when diverse perspectives join to create compelling gaming experiences for a range of players."

“June’s Journey” $1 billion in lifetime gross revenues come from in-app purchases and ad revenues, according to Playtika; it is also the second German game to hit the $1 billion milestone. The first to do so, InnoGames “Forge of Empires” took 11 years to reach $1 billion while “June’s Journey” only took six, making it a history-maker for being the fastest German-made game to hit the milestone.

Wooga’s “June’s Journey” has been the #1 game app in the “Hidden Object (Puzzle) Subgenre” in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store since April 2019, the game company boasts.

"Playtika is immensely proud of Wooga and June's Journey as they continue to lead the way in narrative-driven casual gaming,” Ofer Kinberg, Chief Revenue Officer at Playtika, said in the release. “This achievement is a testament to Wooga's dedication and passion, which align perfectly with Playtika's vision of creating exceptional gaming experiences that captivate players worldwide."

June's Journey is available to download for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

The Kentucky Wildcats roster for the 2024-25 season is practically set, as Mark Pope and his staff have filled out the roster with 12 players to this point in the summer.

Over the next few days, the new players will arrive in Lexington, but for two class of 2024 recruits, it means a little more.

Travis Perry and Trent Noah will be heading to campus here soon, and for the two Kentucky high-school superstars wearing the blue-and-white jersey is a special one. Perry was coming to Lexington under John Calipari, but Noah got a call from Coach Pope to join the class and it was an opportunity he just couldn’t pass up.

Noah recently joined Cameron Mills and the UK Sports Network to talk about his journey to Kentucky, and it is a special one for the Harlan County superstar.

We took a roadtrip to Harlan County and spoke with new @KentuckyMBB Freshman Trent Noah about his journey to Kentucky Hear from @CameronMillz & @trentnoah2_ pic.twitter.com/ZblVMe83h5 — UK Sports Network (@UKSportsNetwork) June 3, 2024

Originally committed to South Carolina for next season, now instead of facing off against the Cats, he will suit up for UK.

A cool story and is a player that is sure to be a fan favorite.

Welcome to the BBN, Trent.

Foundry Virtual Tabletop takes the online play experience to the next level

Online play won’t be the same as in person; Foundry VTT embraces that

Share All sharing options for: Foundry Virtual Tabletop takes the online play experience to the next level

I first got into Dungeons & Dragons in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which naturally meant that my group started online . This was particularly helpful since most of my group members are spread across the world. Every few weeks, we gather on a Discord call instead of around a physical table to roll dice and tell stories. And usually, we do this via a virtual tabletop , a platform that allows us to move character tokens across a map, roll virtual dice, and (maybe most importantly to some of my group members) do basic math.

A couple of months ago, my Dungeon Master announced that we’d be trying something a little new for our next arc. Instead of logging in to our regular virtual tabletop, he sent over a strange-looking link and told us that our passwords were simply our first names.

It took a second for us to figure out how to move our character icons and scroll around the screen, but once we did, we started to explore. We quickly realized that depending on where our character icons were on the map, we as players saw different parts of the map unfold. A few characters scouted ahead, while others lingered behind on the docks. A marketplace unfolded for those looking ahead, and the rest of us immediately scrambled to follow.

When we eventually entered our first battle on this new platform, and rolled our first attacks, we gleefully realized that there were animations to go along with them. My eldritch blast came out in a dazzling purple, shooting right at the sentient mushroom I was trying to hit. (And then we had a quick detour where we just spammed attacks to see how they came out, because it was all so cool).

We were all dazzled by Foundry Virtual Tabletop, as we learned it was called. And our DM seemed pretty jazzed to make the game more interactive. He’s always been passionate about pulling in voice modifiers and queueing up music, but with Foundry VTT, everything leveled up just that much more.

Intrigued by the new possibilities on display, I chatted with Foundry VTT creator Andrew Clayton about the up-and-coming virtual tabletop system , which celebrated its fourth anniversary this month. Like many tabletop players, Clayton took his games online when in-person scheduling became difficult. The virtual tabletop options out there worked decently enough, but he couldn’t help but spot some lost potential.

“I found them to be sort of limiting in ways that I personally found frustrating,” explains Clayton. “And so since I was in a position of being between hobbies [and] between little hobby projects at the time, I kind of had the, I guess, hubris, you might say, to sort of ask the question of, like, Well, what if I try to make something? ”

He never really intended to make Foundry VTT; but after experimenting, Clayton realized that there was something of value in there and he decided to pursue it further. One of his biggest goals was to push the immersivity of the virtual experience as far as possible. The possibilities with Foundry are much much higher than other VTT spaces.

On the game master’s side, Foundry VTT is a one-time purchase for DMs that lets them download the software and host a server for an unlimited number of players, who access it via a link. There is only one purchase tier, which includes all existing Foundry VTT features, all future updates, and no subscription fees. And unlike other virtual tabletop experiences, Foundry VTT doesn’t require players to sign up for anything.

Foundry VTT has all the basics you need for a virtual tabletop: character sheets, dice rolling (which does all the math for you), maps, and tokens to move around said maps. But the software also offers a chance for DMs to get really immersive, with dynamic lightning, visual and audio effects, and other features that make an adventure come to life.

A virtual tabletop battle map, featuring a cobweb covered cave. The information for a giant spider adversary is pulled up.

It’s all pretty invisible to the players. Now that our group is all in on Foundry VTT, we mostly move around our own icons, exploring the map and uncovering new elements as we go. Battles take on an extra level of cool when attacks bring up animations targeted to the enemies we click on. The basic elements of a virtual tabletop are all there, but just augmented and given more options for immersion.

In one particularly climactic moment, for instance, my group watched a snow effect fall across the landscape as a queen made a big announcement. And then, as she spoke, the snow turned gold — indicating a war on the horizon. We all gasped and howled (especially since we, uh, may’ve accidentally caused the war in the first place — whoops!). All of this was done via a particle effect already integrated within Foundry VTT (with the help of a few mods, adds my DM).

Mods are a key part of the Foundry experience. Clayton decided very early on that he wanted Foundry VTT to be super developer-focused, so that members of the community could create different mods for the existing software to help integrate their favorite game systems. As a mod developer himself, this was very important to Clayton. And opening the doors for mod developers to use Foundry as a springboard ended up fostering a particularly creative and passionate community — which ended up paving the way for the company’s first big partnership with Cubicle 7 for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay ’s fourth edition .

“Huge IP, huge franchise, huge game system, huge publisher,” says Clayton. “By all rights that should not have been one of our first gets. [...] But part of the reason it did was the community developers who were making the Warhammer Fantasy system for Foundry had just done such a superlative job of making it an absolutely stunning visual game system that really authentically channeled the feeling of Warhammer. It was just such a strong sales pitch that got them excited and got them on board.”

That first big win, built atop user-generated content, opened the door to other partnerships with publishers, including most recently D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast. It’s a relationship that Clayton wasn’t sure would ever happen.

“I’d actually kind of reached a point where I was comfortable with the fact that it might never happen,” Clayton says. “I guess that [resignation] was what it took for [the partnership] to happen.”

I didn’t even realize how integral the official D&D integration was until I thought back on how, when I add new spells to my sheet, all I need to do is search for them and click “add.” The information from the sourcebooks my DM owns is already integrated into the server. Since my campaign is mostly homebrew, with a setting concocted by my DM, we don’t heavily use existing reference materials, but Clayton showed me how easy it is to pull up source guides for specific games, campaigns, and settings. He also demonstrated how seamless it is to jump between different written material. It’s also very useful in showing information to just one person at a time (or a handful, depending on who gets to know), which makes the experience all the more immersive.

A screenshot featuring a page from a D&D sourcebook, a map of the Neverwinter Wood, and a character sheet

Foundry VTT has a bit of a learning curve to it, something that Clayton readily admits. Even on the player side, there’s a lot going on with the UI, which makes it a little tricky to get used to. But Clayton likens it to Photoshop or Canva. Foundry is a tool that ultimately has more freedom and flexibility once you get past the initial hurdle of figuring it out.

“I’m very aware of what Foundry can do,” he says. “What surprises me and really blows me away is when a community developer actually leans into that, and really takes advantage of it and pushes the boundary of what’s possible in a really exciting way.”

For instance, Foundry VTT is primarily meant to showcase 2D maps and spaces. But there are some people out there who’ve managed to use it to convey 3D environments. There are also developers who’ve managed to put together complex scripted sequences — way more than just turning some snow a different color — that fully utilizes the software’s audio and visual capabilities.

A virtual tabletop map featuring a dark, eerie setting, and two panels of information pulled up.

“We know that that [kind of custom work] can be done,” Clayton says. “But knowing it can be done, and then seeing someone actually take the time to make it and have it work that way is really, really inspiring.”

So should your weekly in-person gaming group consider making the switch online? Clayton believes that there’s some aspects of virtual tabletops that actually eclipse in-person play. Maybe there’s a big encounter on the horizon and your DM wants to try and do something special. But even scheduling games between players can be made much easier, especially at a distance, when you’re doing everything online. (“That’s top of the list [of bullet points],” Clayton quips.)

But there’s also just the simple fact that mechanically dense games are easier to parse when the material can be readily accessible without having to crack open a sourcebook or pull up a bunch of FAQs and databases on the web.

Personally, as a player, what’s really stood out to me over the last several months is just how much Foundry VTT embraces its digital roots, enabling GMs to virtually build out their setting and make it as dynamic as possible. The online space isn’t a limitation; it’s a jumping-off point.

“The ceiling [for creative people] is much, much higher,” says Clayton. “I think people probably think of some of the spectacular sets that they have on a show like Critical Role , where it’s this amazing terrain and [custom] miniatures for every creature. [...] The amount of work and production effort that went into that happening is totally impossible for really anyone who’s not a professional company staging that production. But I think having something that’s approaching that level of immersion in a digital environment is much much easier [using a VTT].”

For what the software can do, it’s not terribly demanding on a computer. As a player, it’s all integrated within a browser, so all I have to do is click a link. Of course, it does depend on how complex the GM wants to make the experience, but Clayton absolutely wants to make sure that Foundry VTT’s capabilities balance with its performance, without sacrificing one for the other.

“That’s something that I want us to double down on and continue investing in,” says Clayton. “So that that remains an area where we are the superior choice for a group that wants to tell a very visually rich, very immersive, very high-production-value sort of game.”

2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, Auburn Golf, Nick Clinard

The University of Auburn Golf team finally conquered the biggest test in collegiate competition — winning the national championship.

The No. 1 ranked Tigers edged Florida State 3-2 to win the NCAA tournament on the North Course at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.

It was the first time the Tigers had advanced past the semifinal match play, per the NCAA article. Head coach Nick Clinard struggled to express what this victory meant for his team.

“It doesn’t even feel real,” Clinard said. “We worked so hard for this, and I have some great young men. I am so happy for them.

“They have a shared vision that equals a greater purpose. They are so connected... Ten wins (on the season). I told them before we got here that if they won this golf tournament, they could go down as one of the best golf teams in the history of college golf.”

It came down to the final match to declare the winner between Auburn senior J.M Butler and FSU sophomore Luke Clanton.

Butler never trailed to Clanton. He was 1UP on the 17th hole, and Clanton almost made things interesting. The FSU sophomore’s chips shot for birdie, hit the cup and bounced away from the hole.

They both settled for par for Butler to win 2& 1.

The Tigers’ freshman phenom Jackson Koivun scored the day's first point as he defeated the Noles’ Brett Roberts 5& 4.

They were tied after three holes, and then the 2024 Fred Haskins Award winner went on a heater to end his year with a 3-0 match play record.

The freshman sent the Tigers to the finals on Tuesday, when he made a 5-footer for birdie on the 21st hole to give Auburn the 3-2 win over Ohio State.

Florida State won the first two matches, with Cole Anderson defeating Carson Bacha, 1UP. In the second match, Tyler Weaver won 2&1 over Josiah Gilbert.

Brendan Valdes gave the Tigers their second point of the day, winning his match 4&3 over Frederik Kjettrup.

This win marked the Tigers’ 10th of the season and the seventh in a row. Auburn also won its fifth SEC Championship in April.

Welcome to Inside the Dishes, where Eater takes an in-depth look at the dishes that are defining hot new restaurants around town.

Fire is the central ingredient at Baso , where chefs Jacques Varon and Max Lappe experiment daily with the possibilities of cooking directly over flame. The dreamy, ivory walls provide a contemporary setting for plates where cuisines and flavors from Spain’s Basque Country and Japan converge. Inspired by Varon’s time living abroad in Japan and working around the world in restaurants such as Alinea in Chicago, Angler in Los Angeles, and restaurants in Tokyo, the Houston native returned home and opened the live-fire restaurant in December 2023, fulfilling a distinct void in the city’s landscape of Spanish and Basque restaurants, and charming Houstonians with inventive takes of local seafood and produce, and regional desserts.

“I love the Basque region, everything about it, and their philosophy of cooking — this idea that food comes straight from the earth and goes straight to the fire and then straight to your plate,” Varon said. “I decided to open a restaurant that would bring a lot of techniques and labor profiles that aren’t really used here.”

A trip to Baso certainly feels like a journey to one of Basque Country’s effortlessly opulent restaurants. Minimalism is a theme in the dishes and the decor: Eggshell white stone walls center a room framed by white circular stables and booths, smart cocktail glasses, and, at the center, a robust hearth usually being tended to by Varon or Lappe themselves. Plates take inspiration from the aromatic ingredients found in Japan and the coastal fare that shapes the Basque Country region, resulting in dishes that are lively, refined, and provide something truly new in Houston’s expansive dining scene.

Visitors are enjoying what is likely version 12 of the Baso buns, according to Varon. After trial and error, the restaurant’s final interpretation of the menu mainstay is topped with Calabrian chile and Manchego cheese from the city’s own Houston Dairymades . The fresh, warm dinner rolls are a solid precursor to the rest of the meal’s plates, each progressive dish emboldened by Varon’s use of live-fire.

Grilled Oysters with Toasted Milk

Grilled Gulf Coast oysters get a touch of creaminess thanks to warmed, toasted milk powder. “The grilled oysters are a fun, great mistake,” Varon says. A teammate in the kitchen was making brown butter and Varon accidentally added milk powder to the pot. “It started to make these solids at the bottom,” he says. “We thought it was a lot cooler and better tasting.” Finished with green garlic butter, the happy mistake resulted in a sharp, decadent bite of seafood.

An image of grilled oysters and the baso buns, ad well as a candle, bottle of wine, and wine and cocktail glasses.

Among shrimp on the half shell and an impressive selection of steaks, the bluefin dish is one of Baso’s standout mains. The circular creation is a textural delight with layers of crispy Carolina Gold Rice, and an elegant tuna mixture, to ensure every bite of the dish is a dance between the softness of the tuna, the velvety richness of egg yolk, and the crunch of crisped rice. “We get a big piece of tuna and we scrape it with an abalone shell like you’re scraping at ice or something — just chiseling away at it,” Varon says.

The tuna is mixed with a Calabrian puree, giving the fish its smoky flavor. A housemade white soy shiro dashi sauce — inclusive of marinated shallot, lemon zest, and chives — is drizzled atop the rice. Finished with chives and a zest of lime, the dish is embellished with yuzu Kosho egg yolk. “It touches the bottom of your tongue before everything else and gives you a nice sensation,” Varon adds.

An image of a woman’s hand with a fork over the bluefin dish.

A5 Miyazaki Prefecture Wagyu

While living right below a Yakiniku (Japanese grilled meat) restaurant in Japan, Varon saw and smelled beef everywhere. It’s the inspiration behind his A5 wagyu steak, a rich, decadent slice of meat served with a herby bowl of greens. “This dish needs nothing but salt,” said Varon. “We know how buttery and rich an A5 is, so it should come with a bright salad that compliments it.”

The lettuce is complemented with a white soy dressing that’s been compressed with lemongrass, garlic, ginger, shallot, and jalapeno. A meticulous combination of lettuce, white soy dressing, and olive oil sourced from Texas is a light, zesty bed for the steak, which is finished with a microplane of lime, jalapeno, and lemon to brighten it.

An image of slices of Wagyu and half a lime.

Cabbage with apple molasses and lamb bacon

“This dish is a little bit more Basque than people think,” says Varon. “Cabbage, apples, lamb — it’s about as Basque as it gets.”

Quartered cabbages are seared until they are black on both sides before being placed in a bag with other ingredients like white soy and butter. The chef steams the cabbage for an hour before cooling them down ahead of service. Apples are liquified with a pectic enzyme, transforming the fruit into molasses, and lamb bacon is cured for a day and smoked over the hearth for six hours before both are added to the cabbage and finished with Black pepper. “We render the bacon over the hearth before service so it’s nice, smoky, toasty, and ready to go.”

See, solve, scale: Teaching entrepreneurship as a structured process

Executive Director of the Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, Danny Warshay reflects on his journey from the classroom to the basement to the boardroom and back again.

Danny Warshay teaching a class

Danny Warshay loves three things: his family, Brown University and entrepreneurship. Interestingly, he’s managed to weave them all together throughout his unique career.

A 1987 Brown graduate with a degree in history, Warshay is a vocal proponent of liberal arts education — so much so that he’s managed to turn teaching new venture creation into a liberal art itself. As the Executive Director of the Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship and Professor of the Practice, he has spent nearly two decades launching ventures and teaching thousands of students a process he calls “See, Solve, Scale," even authoring a book of the same name.

But Warshay’s journey traces back to his final year as an undergraduate at Brown, when an independent study under the tutelage of Engineering Professor (Emeritus) Barrett Hazeltine led to an opportunity to join the leadership team of a local startup software company based in Rhode Island. Warshay played a pivotal role in the firm's growth, ultimately selling it to Apple Computer in the late 1980s. This early success propelled him into the world of startups, both within and beyond the tech industry following a brief stint in brand management at Procter & Gamble after earning his MBA from Harvard.

In 2005, his mentor Barrett Hazeltine extended an invitation to embark on a new entrepreneurial venture — this time, to join the faculty at Brown University and teach entrepreneurship.

Translating startup success to academic excellence

Not having taught before, Warshay quickly applied his startup skills to a new course. With no business school at Brown to guide him on teaching entrepreneurship, he soon found himself confronting many misconceptions about new venture thinking.

“Early on I was encouraged to focus on teaching ‘entrepreneurial spirit,’” he chuckles. “I wasn’t sure what that meant and, even if I did, I certainly didn’t know how to teach it.”

Warshay quickly surmised that what was needed was a structured process — like any engineering endeavor would have.

“As a faculty member in engineering I approached the task like any good engineer would if they were, say, building a bridge. We certainly would not tell people to go out and have the ‘bridge-building spirit.’” He continued, “We would distill common elements all bridge building has in common. We would teach the beginning, middle and end of a structured process while leaving lots of room for creativity and variation of all kinds.”

That thinking is what led to the development of the problem-solving process he coined, “See, Solve, Scale.” Now codified in a book, translated into other languages around the world, his process has been used in a wide variety of settings well beyond business startups such as large corporations, government agencies, nonprofits and even the military.

“‘See, Solve, Scale’ is a process that anyone can learn, master and apply to solving any consequential problems,” he notes.

Here are a few key takeaways that provide insight into this powerful methodology.

Freedom is found in the context of limitations

Prevailing thinking with many leaders emphasizes efforts to acquire more resources. Securing ample funding, assembling a formidable team and amassing a wealth of experience all represent different pockets of resources new venture founders and corporate managers often wish they had more of. There’s a sense that a disadvantage stems from not having enough of these.

Paradoxically, Warshay has found that there are advantages to what he calls ‘the benefits of scarce resources’ and negatives associated with ‘the burdens of abundant resources.’

His point is simple: scarcity forces leaders to focus on the problems that they can solve. “Being constrained forces an entrepreneur to do a variety of things. First, they must find people to collaborate with who bring complementary skills to the table. If you are flush with resources, you might not be motivated to do that,” he indicates.

Secondly, having scarce resources empowers you to fail fast and fail cheap. “When you have a large budget, you can’t afford to lose it and you may end up focusing on protecting your cache, thereby missing opportunities that being constrained would have encouraged,” he says. Abundant resources can lead to complacency whereas the opposite does not.

As an illustration, two of his former students founded the Casper mattress company. According to Warshay, when they started the company, they didn’t know anything about mattresses except that you slept on them. This experience gap led them to take a fresh look at the industry, finding opportunities to produce and distribute mattresses differently than hidebound competitors. This lesson applies to anyone confronted with a dearth of resources — regardless of setting.

Build an "A" team

In the startup realm, a common adage rings true: assemble an “A” team, even if you have a “B” idea. This thinking suggests that a great team will figure out a path to success regardless of the starting point — a “B” team won’t be able to.

That said, even if you’re a great “A” player, you’ll still need a team around you. Warshay is quick to point out that only 16% of startups are founded by a single entrepreneur, and compared to companies started with robust teams, individual entrepreneurs perform worse. The bottom line is entrepreneurship is a team sport.

Well, what’s the secret to forming a successful entrepreneurship team?

Warshay says confidently, “They’re the same words you hear all the time outside of the new venture arena: diversity and inclusion.” Diversity of all kinds he clarifies, “Race and gender, personalities (introverts and extroverts), points of view, skills and backgrounds too.”

This point can’t be emphasized enough: successful entrepreneurship teams recruit a diverse set of members. The key here is to tap your weak ties, not just the strong ones you find on social media.

He also adds the critical importance of inclusion. "You must create an environment of trust where all team members can bring their true selves to the team. “Unfortunately, diverse teams that are not inclusive underperform homogenous teams,” Warshay states with disappointment. “It’s not enough to have diversity. Team leaders must ensure they create an environment that harnesses it.”

Warshay's final insight came from an unexpected source: his daughter Marin, who graduated from Brown in 2023. Ikigai is a Japanese concept she brought back from leadership training that transcends the startup world into the realm of life advice.

It means living a life of meaning and comprises four key elements:

  • What you love
  • What the world needs
  • What you’re good at
  • What you can be paid for

“Anyone can learn the ‘See, Solve, Scale' method,” Warshay says. “But if you don’t have Ikigai, it’s likely not going to be successful.”

This is useful guidance for anyone working as a leader, entrepreneur or otherwise, whether recent grads or mid-career professionals. Warshay confesses this idea is far more important than he originally thought. He now makes a point to start every course by walking students through the concept. He encourages his students to frame new ventures in the same way he thinks people should approach their lives: with forethought that what they are searching for is something that helps them find both mission and meaning throughout.

Few professors have the depth of experience, breadth of perspective and rich roots that Danny Warshay has from his time here at Brown. His liberal arts education has taken him from Providence to points beyond and back home again. He was recently in Japan where the Japanese version of “See, Solve, Scale” had just been released. If his successes in the basement of Brown housing to the boardrooms of some of America’s hottest startups are any measure of his success, his experience has served him very well.
