Tyler Perry Studios plans to open for public tours in 2020
Originally posted Friday, November 22, 2019 by RODNEY HO/[email protected] on his AJC Radio & TV Talk blog
UPDATED: The COVID-19 pandemic delayed plans for a tour indefinitely. No new start date has been announced as of July 27, 2021.
Last month, Tyler Perry expressed a desire in interviews to open his sprawling 330-acre studio to public tours.
Today, Tyler Perry Studios announced on social media that this indeed will come to fruition some time in 2020.
Pricing, frequency and launch date will come later.
His studio is by far the largest in Georgia and in terms of acreage, bigger than any of the studios in Los Angeles.
Besides his 12 sound stages, he’ll be able to show off back lots featuring retail shops, a baseball field, a jail, a trailer park, a four-sided mansion and a duplicate White House.
There are also historic buildings from the time it was Fort McPherson, an army base. He purchased the property in 2015 for $30 million and has invested more than $250 million into the site with more to come.
This could become a popular tourist site on top of places such as the Georgia Aquarium, Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and the Coca-Cola Museum.
For comparison, in Los Angeles, Sony Pictures Studios offers tours Monday through Friday four times a day for $50 per person . VIP tours are priced at $175 apiece. A more modest "coffee tour" is $135 per person .
A Paramount Studios two-hour tour is $60 apiece seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ( The 4.5-hour VIP tour is $189 per person which includes lunch and greater access to behind-the-scenes areas. ) The Warner Brothers studio tour starts at $69 per person and runs up to 14 a day. There is a “classics’ version at the same price and a deluxe $295 tour.

Tyler Perry Gives a Private Tour of His New Studios [WATCH]
Tyler Perry recently held a grand opening at his 330-acre studio lot in Georgia to celebrity fanfare! Located on the grounds of the former Fort McPherson Military base that includes 12 sound stages, a historic district, countless sets, and even outdoor green space.
Perry has been developing Tyler Perry Studios for years all while shooting some of our favorite shows and movies like Black Panther, The Walking Dead, The Haves and the Have Nots, Acrimony, the Madea franchises and more!
But the burning question in everyone’s mind is can you tour Tyler Perry Studios? Sadly not right now, but when I called the studios I was told to check back sometime in February of 2020 and hopefully tours will open up to the public. But that doesn’t mean you can’t see past the gates of the new studios,
Watch below Perry recently gave a personal tour of the massive $250 million facilities.
Check out the tour where Perry shows off the various homes on the lot along with a hospital, church, hotel, courtrooms and much more!

Inside Tyler Perry’s 300-Acre Studio Compound in Atlanta
Released on 11/07/2019
Hey, AD, Tyler Perry here.
Wanna take you on a tour
of Tyler Perry Studios, so hop in.
Come on, let's go for a ride.
[mellow music]
Tyler Perry Studios is 330 acres
in the heart of Atlanta.
This was all Fort McPherson Army Base.
There was an 18 hole golf course here
that rivaled Augusta, it was absolutely beautiful.
But when the army went away,
so did all of the majesty of the golf course,
so we've just been developing it
and building as we needed.
Hold on, we gonna have to do the Flintstones
to get up this hill.
She wouldn't let me take my other cart, the fast one.
I think I can, I think I can.
I think I can make it up the hill, and I think.
Okay and I did, all right.
So 12 soundstages.
We're getting ready
for our big grand opening celebration,
where we will be dedicating the soundstages
to a lot of people who have inspired
and encouraged me over the years.
So you see you got Halle Berry here,
and Denzel Washington,
and Whoopi Goldberg, and Oprah.
Lots of things have been shot here:
The Walking Dead, Black Panther was shot here,
First Man, Instant Family with Mark Wahlberg.
Really excited to be given stewardship,
to make sure that the land is maintained,
that the history is protected
and always service that known
for many people.
This is Maxineville, it's our backlot
where I shoot a few of my TV shows.
Some of the fans of those shows
will definitely recognize some of these houses,
especially this neighborhood in particular
from If Loving You Is Wrong.
So this area in Maxineville,
was dedicated to Madea.
Madea, this is her house.
This is Madea's house, pretty famous character
from a lot of my movies.
So the original house is down the street
in this neighborhood on Avon Avenue,
but we wanted to have a place
where visitors and fans of Madea
could actually come and see it.
You can walk in this house,
it's like she's gonna come down the stairs
with her big huge self, and say hi and feed you.
It's all furnished and ready to go.
Maxineville, I named it after my mother Maxine
who passed in 2009.
So this whole area, this whole neighborhood,
I wanted to be a town named after her in her honor,
and she was so happy to have that.
It's very sentimental for me,
and we do a lot of shooting down here
for a lot of the shows,
so it's always really fun, and powerful.
And it's a good memory of her to be down here,
she was very proud of it.
I did this show
where I needed a farmhouse
that looked like it was 100 years old,
so we built a farmhouse
and set it among these old trees
to make it look like it had been there forever.
And one day we're gonna get there
on this cart
going up the hill,
but this is our farmhouse.
They're all practical inside.
You can go in and shoot inside.
Even though it looks like it's very old,
it's only built a few years ago.
So let me show you a little bit more of Maxineville.
So I built this house for one of my shows,
it's a four sided mansion that I built
to combat some of the sets that we were building.
I just thought, why not build a permanent structure
that has four different sides to it
that could be four different places all in one?
So, I'll show you what I mean.
Here we have the Georgian side of the mansion
for one of my lead characters.
She and her family, everybody live here,
but if you go.
I'm gonna cut across the grass
and really piss somebody off.
And then you're here,
and it has a whole 'nother feel to it.
This was the President's home,
before he went to Washington DC
in the Haves and Have Nots.
And then there's this side, totally different.
And then we have this side, which is very modern.
Tried to make the best use of the space,
and the places, and there you have it.
Watch your knees.
See if we can get through here.
Legs in, arms in, everybody good?
[metal screeches]
That ain't good, that ain't good.
Okay, great.
Now I'm gonna show you the White House.
Welcome to the White House.
So, still a lot of cleaning being done here, but [sings].
I don't know how to turn the lights on.
Let's go upstairs.
This is the 80% replica
of the actual White House in Washington DC.
So we built this
for my new show called The Oval on BET,
and we're really proud of how it turned out.
The residents of the White House famous iconic window here.
President's bedroom, some hell has gone on
in this room over the last episodes.
Oh, we've done some everything in here.
This is the daughter's room.
This is the son's room.
We built this about five and a half months ago,
we started it.
This the only White House
that's ever been built at a studio on a lot,
and we are really excited about it.
So I'm gonna show you more of the property,
come on, there's a lot more to see.
Obama, my man.
All of these houses were all built in the 1800s.
They are extremely beautiful inside, every one of 'em.
The one in the center is where I shot two Medea movies,
and that's also where President Roosevelt stayed
and Colin Powell.
These were all the places for the generals
and the officers to stay when they were on campus.
You have a church here on the campus
that's also built in 1800s, really beautiful inside.
Not much has been touched.
All of these buildings
are on the National Historic Registry,
so I take great pride in maintaining them
at their original state.
Okay, so this is the Post Theater.
In The Walking Dead,
this was the home of the Kingdom
where the tiger was on the stage.
Come on, I'll show you.
If the lights are on.
I don't think the lights are on.
And that's where the tiger was on the stage
in the Kingdom for The Walking Dead.
The Tiger was on the stage [growls].
I love Walking Dead.
Oh, I gotta show you something,
this is Madea's car.
She would say this is my 1974 Cadillac,
and I bought it in '74
and hadn't had maintenance on it since.
But if you notice the luxury plastic on the seats,
you see if you are Architectural Digest
this what wrong people Architectural Digest,
they don't know how to put plastic on their furniture.
You buy all at that nice shit,
spend all that money on all that nice shit,
but they don't know how to put no plastic
on they furniture.
Put plastic on all your shit, thank you.

If they have a dream,
I feel like their dream can come true.

As most fans know and rolling out reported, Tyler Perry Studios has rocketed into orbit since its official opening. He hosted a spectacular grand opening in early October that featured the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Cicely Tyson, Samuel L. Jackson, Halle Berry, Whoopi Goldberg and many others.
Later that month, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence from “Bad Boys For Life” and Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes from “Coming 2 America: Quest” filmed at Tyler Perry Studios at the same time. TPS was also where portions of the blockbuster film Black Panther and the AMC phenomenon “The Walking Dead” were shot.
In November, TPS was the site of the latest Democratic presidential debates.
Details of the studio tours are forthcoming.

Tyler Perry Studios to start offering public tours
ATLANTA — After a star-studded grand opening gala last month, many people across the metro area have been clamoring to get a peek at the Tyler Perry Studios.
Well, soon you will be able to get your chance.

The studio posted on its Twitter account Friday that it will be offering public tours starting in 2020.
“We cannot wait to have you aboard! The official tour dates and information will be announced next year,” the tweet said.

“It’s incredible for this place to have this history and for me to own it. It’s really powerful,” Tyler Perry told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution before the studio opening. “I hope this is an inspiration for everybody else.”
Quietly and quickly, since he bought 330 acres at Fort McPherson in 2015, Perry built 12 massive soundstages for other Hollywood studios to rent. There’s a replica of the White House for his upcoming presidential television series, “The Oval.” Need a set for a hospital, a jail, an airliner or an airport terminal, a trailer park or a suburban subdivision? Perry’s built it.

His studio also bought a vintage diner in rural Georgia, put it on wheels and relocated it to Fort Mac. A half-mile, six-lane freeway for car chases and backlots resembling a major city and European streetscapes, are also there.
Even Perry’s expansive office in a former U.S. Army Reserve headquarters, now called the Dream Building, which doubled as an apartment in his film, “Acrimony,” is ready to be a film set at a moment’s notice.

Perry had already said he planned to open his studio for tours for schoolchildren by next summer. He’s also planning an up to 3,000-seat theater for concerts and other events.

T yler Perry is leading the way when it comes to Black people building power in the entertainment industry and his latest venture is history in the making.
According to CBS News , Perry hosted a grand opening for his massive Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta this past weekend. The film complex covers 330 acres and includes 12 sound stages. It’s actually larger than the Burbank, California lots owned by Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros and Paramount combined.
If that isn’t news enough, Perry is the first Black American to own a major film studio, period.
Celebrity attendees for the grand opening included Samuel L. Jackson , Oprah Winfrey , Beyoncé and Spike Lee . Perry went on to say that despite Hollywood not getting him, “I know what I do is important. I know what I do touches millions of people around the world. I know how important every word, every joke, every laugh [is]. I know what that does for the people where I come from and the people that I’m writing for. So, yeah, I get that.”
Perry is the creative behind 22 movies, 20 plays and eight TV shows. All of his work has led to this moment. He explained:
“I know for a fact that when I drive in through these gates, onto this 330 acres and see these 12 sound stages, and see the highway sign that says ‘Tyler Perry Studios’ as you’re making to the exit in here, as I come in here and I see these hundreds of people working, these black and brown – I’ve been on sets where I’ve been the only black face on, only black face , as recently as 2019 going, ‘Where are the black people in this movie?’ Back behind the camera? So, when I come to work here and every black person that comes to work here they go, ‘Oh my God, it’s heaven. Here we are. We’re represented.’ Where everybody’s represented. LGBTQ’s represented. Black, white, gay, straight, whatever. We’re all represented, working hand-in-hand, arm-in-arm.”
Tyler Perry Studios was built on part of Fort McPherson military base, which was once used by the Confederate army. Perry called it “poetic justice” that his Black-owned studio is now housed on land that was once used to uphold slavery.
The 12 sound stages at Tyler Perry Studios are each named after seminal Black actors and actresses including Cicely Tyson and the recently deceased Diahann Carroll . Included with the 12 sound stages is a full-on replica of The White House where Perry shoots his upcoming BET show “The Oval”.
Perry says this is only the beginning for his historical studio. He also told Gayle King in his “CBS This Morning” interview , “I tell you what I’m most excited about next is that pulling this next phase off is building a compound for trafficked women, girls, homeless women, LGBTQ youth who are put out and displaced and having a compound that is a beautiful place, right here somewhere on these 330 acres, where they’re trained in the business and they become self-sufficient, they live in nice apartments, there’s daycare, there’s all these wonderful things that allows them to reenter society and then pay it forward again.”

Tyler Perry Studios to offer tours in 2020
Tyler Perry will open his 330-acre studio in Atlanta, Ga., to public tours next year, and we really hope Madea comes out of retirement to be the tour guide.
Tyler Perry recently announced on social media that his studios, the largest in Georgia, will offer tours in 2020. In additional information, like pricing, frequency and dates, aren't available yet though.
What might be included in the tour? Considering Tyler Perry Studios is larger than any studio in Los Angeles in terms of acreage, if could be a lot. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the studio includes 12 sound stages and plenty of interesting sets, like a duplicate White House.
You also have to consider all the well-known films and shows Tyler Perry has produced, directed, wrote or acted in throughout his career. It's likely some familiar faces will be incorporated in the tours too.
For more information, you can read the full article on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Three Southern trails you need in your life
Get outside: kentucky wildlands waterfall trail.
You’ve heard about this state’s bourbon, horse racing, and bluegrass music, but you’ll also find 800 beautiful waterfalls in this area of Appalachia. The Kentucky Wildlands organization created a trail highlighting 17 of the most spectacular cascading falls for you to visit. From novice to expert, there’s at least a trail or two for everyone, with some being ADA accessible and/or pet-friendly.
Something to know beforehand is the flow of the falls, which depends on rainfall. Seasons outside of summer are generally best to visit, with the exception of Cumberland Falls.
Also, if you’re hoping to finish the trail in one or two days, you’ll need to rethink that goal. The trail is very expansive, and it isn’t actually possible to cover it so quickly. If covering the entire trail is on your to-do list, keep in mind it will take several days (or several weekend trips) to complete the entire trail.
What you can count on is every waterfall being unique, like Yahoo Falls — the tallest waterfall in Kentucky — or the well-known twofer Pine Island Double Falls. If you’ve ever wanted to see a moonbow, a natural phenomenon when a rainbow is created by moonlight rather than direct sunlight, then Cumberland Falls would be the perfect spot for you.
There are also many more waterfalls within driving distance of each of the waterfalls chosen for the trail, along with a bevy of outdoor recreation opportunities—such as rock climbing in Red River Gorge or an overnight stay in a tree house.
According to Tammie Nazario, director of The Kentucky Wildlands, “The Waterfall Trail is a small part of the many unique outdoor experiences we have here. I encourage everyone to come visit the hidden gem of The Kentucky Wildlands and see for themselves.”
Her favorite waterfall? Pine Island Double Falls.
FINISH YOUR PLATE: Bayou Country Crawfish Trail
If you’re a fan of Southern shellfish, Louisiana's Bayou Country may be calling your name. Depending on how much time you’re willing to invest in eating the state’s cultural cuisine, there are well over 30 stops on this trail, starting in downtown Houma. Gumbo, po-boys, even live crawfish are on the menu and available to go, drive-thru or sit and feast at Cajun restaurants all the way down to the Gulf.
If you’ve never been to this region of the country, I can personally attest to its authenticity. And crawfish is definitely king!
While you’re there, be sure to get the T-shirt too. As part of the trail, you can check off the different stops as you collect your receipts. Once you have gathered five receipts, you’ll be able to fill out an info card and get a free tee from the Houma Area Visitor Center after turning it in. It’s a win-win.
UNWIND A BIT: Georgia Film Trail
Known as the “Hollywood of the South,” the state of Georgia (and Atlanta, in particular) has become a movie production powerhouse, thanks in large part to the state’s generous tax incentive program, a lower cost of living compared to western counterparts, moderate climate and video production infrastructure.
With a slew of famous films (past and present) on the list of locations, the Georgia Film Trail has created both a self-guided tour and guided tour. Here’s six of the most popular guided film tour trails you can escape to and enjoy this year.
Mystic Falls Tour
This tour covers parts of Conyers and Covington and is for fans of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals . Thanks to the age of streaming services, it’s never too late to be a fan.
The Walking Dead Studio Tour
In Senoia, visitors will find 150 acres of land dedicated to this series’ sets, including never-before-seen locations.
READ MORE: Things you'll find on the Walking Dead set
Georgia Tour Company
If you’re up for a two-hour walking tour through historic downtown Senoia, you can visit spots used during filming of not only The Walking Dead , but also the legendary Fried Green Tomatoes and Pet Seminary II , among others.
Walkin’ Dead Tours
Not far from Senoia, visitors can tour a private filming backlot where many scenes from The Walking Dead were filmed. If still available, a tour with or without an attack by actual Walkers may be on the menu, or experts from Zombie Charm School have even been known to offer a full Walker-for-a-Day transformative experience.
Southern Hollywood Film Tour
If riding in a car is more your speed, then this two-hour tour takes guests to locations also used in The Walking Dead and Fried Green Tomatoes , as well as Joyful Noise and Sweet Home Alabama , just to name a few.
READ MORE: Sweet Home Alabama quotes we love
Savannah Segway Movie Tour
But if you’re up for walking or riding in a car, maybe you’d also be interested in riding a Segway to enjoy some of historic Savannah’s most iconic film locations — like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil , Something to Talk About and, of course, the much-loved Forrest Gump .
Best SEC game day traditions you need to know about
The college football season is right around the corner, and we can’t wait! Before the opening slate of SEC games, let’s consider some of the things that make college football so great– the unique and inspiring traditions that happen on game day across the South.
Here are the best game day traditions for every school in the SEC. (Disagree? It was hard selecting from the many choices, but let us know which tradition should have been included instead.)
Alabama: Dixieland Delight
While saying “Roll Tide” (as a cheer during a game, or in general greeting to a fellow fan) is perhaps the school’s most well-known tradition, perhaps its most exuberant is the singing of “Dixieland Delight” during a game’s fourth quarter. A chart-topping song recorded by the country band Alabama in 1982, it was actually written about the state of Tennessee. The song involves audience participation with “creative” (and often crass) lines, causing its temporary ban in 2015. The song was brought back in 2018 after a public campaign and a promise to not include profanity and today there’s nothing quite like hearing the words sung at a night game under the stadium’s neon LED lights .

Arkansas: Calling the Hogs
The ubiquitous “Woo Pig Sooie” phrase is part of the tradition of “Calling the Hogs” at Arkansas games , The most common story of its origin comes from the 1920s when a group of farmers began shouting “Sooie!” at a football game to encourage the Razorbacks players. The crowd joined in, and the rest is history.
The cheer, said at kickoff and at moments throughout games, goes like this: “Whoo!” (while raising the arms, wiggling the fingers), “Pig!” (bringing both arms down with fists clenched), and “Sooie!” (extending the right arm) three times, then finishing by yelling “Razorbacks!”

Auburn: Flying of War Eagle
Even non-fans can be moved by Auburn’s most iconic tradition – the flying in of War Eagle to Jordan Hare Stadium before kickoff. The tradition traces its roots to 1892 when a former Civil War soldier-turned professor’s eagle (who he’d nursed back to health after a battle) got loose and began to circle the football field curing a game. Numerous live eagle mascots followed that original one, and in 2000 today’s tradition began. The Auburn University athletic website says that on Aug. 31, 2000: “Tiger, also known as War Eagle VI, flew from the end zone to midfield, delighting the 76,128 fans in attendance for the season opener vs. Wyoming. Before long, the flights began on the concourse between the lower and upper bowls, making for a more majestic flight as the eagles circle the stadium before locating their trainer at midfield.”
WATCH MORE: How Auburn's eagles take flight
Florida: Gator Chomp
The favorite alligator hand chomp started in 1981 after Florida marching band members noticed how the Mississippi State cheerleaders did a rhythmic hand motion when their band played the “Jaws” theme; the band members took the idea home with them from the game and began playing the theme themselves and doing a motion that imitated an alligator’s jaws chomping down. The motion debuted a few weeks later on Oct. 10 in The Swamp and while fans originally tried to call it “Gator Jaws,” it evolved into the Gator Chomp instead.
Georgia: Playing between the hedges
While “Calling the Dawgs” might be the most popular vocal evidence of Georgia fandom, the tradition of playing football games “between the hedges” is the most iconic. Originally planted in 1929, the beautiful green border of “privet Ligustrum” at Sanford Stadium was inspired by a visit in 1920s to the Rose Bowl by UGA graduate student Charlie Martin. The hedges have been removed and replaced twice–in 1994 for preparation of the upcoming Summer Olympics in Georgia (when soccer was played in the stadium) and in 2017 to make space for new lockers and a scoreboard -- but remain a unique stadium feature in all of college football.
Kentucky: Tailgating at Kroger Field
Fans gather in the huge parking lot at Kroger Field for Kentucky football games, and enjoy snacks and libations (make sure there's plenty of bourbon involved; it is, after all the, official drink of Kentucky and the Lexington area has numerous world-class bourbon distilleries). Tailgaters and finds alike then enjoy Cat Walk, the procession of the Wildcat football team that takes place on the path between Nutter Field House (where the team bus arrives) and Commonwealth Stadium.
LSU: Visiting Mike the Tiger
While LSU may have some of the most intense gametime traditions and atmosphere (night games in Death Valley take on a life of their own), one of the most unique traditions in all of college football is visiting Mike the Tiger’s habitat before entering Tiger Stadium. The 5,000-square foot habitat is located between Tiger Stadium and Pete Maravich Assembly Center and includes a pond and stream system and architecture designed specifically for the bengal tiger. It’s also a great place for a Tiger selfie. (The LSU Tiger nickname, by the way, was officially adopted in 1936, but the first live tiger was bought in 1934 from a Little Rock zoo.)
Ole Miss: Tailgating at The Grove
The best tailgating scene in the country takes place in Oxford at The Grove. The 10-acre grassy lawn in the middle of the Ole Miss campus is transformed into a luxurious place of chandeliers, silver platters and cocktails on football game day. Integral to tailgating there is the “Hotty Toddy” cheer and using red or blue plastic cups only (it’s a University rule!) The football team enters and walks through The Grove via the archway at the Walk of Champions en route to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
READ MORE: Why the Square in Oxford is the South's best gems
Mississippi State: Cowbells
The most recognizable sound inside a SEC football stadium? We’d argue for the cowbells at Mississippi State, which were first recorded in use in the late 1930s but come from a legend further back; after a cow wandered onto the field during a game against Ole Miss, the Bulldogs won resoundingly and students then adopted the cow as a good luck charm. While the cow roamed the sidelines for a while, fans eventually took to simply bringing and ringing the cow’s bell. Temporarily banned by the SEC along with other artificial noisemakers, cowbells were officially allowed again in 2010 with some restrictions.

Missouri: Rock M
A large 90-foot wide and 95-feet high block “M,” carved from stone by the freshman class in 1927, guards the stadium’s north endzone of Memorial Stadium It debuted when the Tigers defeated Kansas State and “ Five-hundred freshmen joined hands and encircled the cinder track in a single line while the bland played ‘Old Missouri’ in the center of the field. A huge stone M – the work of the Frosh the night before – loomed up white and threatening against the bankment.” (Note also that our modern understanding of Homecoming was created at the Columbia campus; if you can make it there for Homecoming weekend, it’s an especially fun tradition.)
Oklahoma: Boomer Sooner (and Schooner)
The term “Sooner” is tied with the University of Oklahoma’s connection to Native American tribes that had been relocated to the area after being forcibly removed from their homelands via the Trail of Tears. When treaties were negotiated and the land was made available to settlers through Land Runs; those who “jumped the gun” before the official opening were called Sooners. While the term is connected to an unjust historical event, “Sooner” also became synonymous with energetic or enthusiastic individuals. Today, Sooner is found in the “Boomer Sooner” fight song and in the “Sooner Schooner” (the replica covered wagon pulled by two white ponies named Boomer and Sooner).
South Carolina: Cockaboose Tailgating
A line of 22 bright red stationary train cars sits behind the south end of William-Brice Stadium and are privately owned and rented out by avid Gamecocks fans. The rail cars, lying on an old railroad track, have terraces on top for tailgating and are fully equipped inside. While the Cocakbooses aren’t open to the general public, fans tailgate nearby and also walk through the area for a unique pre- and post-game experience. The cockaboose name comes from South Carolina’s Gamecock nickname, which originated from South Carolina Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter, who was often called “The Fighting Gamecock.”)
Tennessee: Rocky Top
Go to a Tennessee football game and be prepared for numerous singings of “Rocky Top,” the school’s unofficial song (it’s official fight song is “Down the Field”) Written in 1967 Felice and Boudleaux Bryant stayed at the nearby town’s Gatlinburg Inn and later popularized by country star Lynn Anderson, it was played for the first time at a game against Alabama in 1972. The song’s familiar chorus (you’ll hear it numerous times throughout a game!) states: “Rocky Top, you’ll always be / Home sweet home to me / Good ol’ Rocky Top / Rocky Top, Tennessee.”
READ MORE: Songs we wish we didn't love
Texas: Hook ‘em Horns
The famous hand sign–made by extending the index and pinky fingers while grasping the second and third fingers with the thumb–debuted in 1955 when the school’s head yell leader demonstrated it at a pep rally ahead of a game against TCU. The gesture, which represents the look of its mascot’s head and horns, has been used ever since during games, but also as a general greeting, farewell, and other sign of good will. (But also be cognizant of the “horns down” since, which rivals are known to use against Longhorn fans and teams.)
Texas A &M: Midnight Yell
Texas A&M’s best game tradition actually occurs the night before the game, at the school’s midnight yell practice session. Taking place inside Kyle Field, more than 25,000 students regularly attend the event, which includes the marching band leading everyone into the stadium, regimented practices of each in-game activity, stories from Yell Leaders, and even a moment of darkness when dates are encouraged to kiss. The tradition began in 1913, but didn’t move to midnight until 1931 after it was suggested that freshmen should gather at midnight to practice ahead of the next day’s game against rival University of Texas.
Vanderbilt: Anchor Down
The anchor pairs with Vanderbilt’s Commodore nickname and is found in numerous campus and game day traditions. An anchor is displayed on game day and during home games it’s carried in the Star Walk procession to the football stadium, where someone is invited to “drop the anchor” at midfield before kickoff. The “Anchor Down” phrase has grown up alongside the anchor traditions and is now used as a cheer and a greeting. The anchor is a relatively new tradition at Vanderbilt, debuting in 2004.
The Mississippi town that's perfect for a girlfriends' getaway
A cooking class is a great activity for a getaway with your girlfriends.
Looking for a charming spot for a getaway with your girlfriends? Let us introduce you to Greenwood, Mississippi, a hidden gem in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. (They don’t call it “The Heart and Soul of the Delta” for no reason!) It’s where rich history meets modern luxury, making it an ideal destination for a fun and relaxing trip with your besties. So, what’s on the itinerary?
Stylish stays at The Alluvian Hotel
Start your trip by checking into The Alluvian Hotel, a chic boutique hotel that’s perfect for a girls' weekend. Housed in a beautifully restored 1917 building, The Alluvian offers luxurious rooms and a prime location right in the heart of downtown Greenwood. It’s not just about the comfortable accommodations; the Alluvian’s spa is a must-visit. Book a relaxing massage or a full day of pampering, and you’ll be ready for whatever weekend adventures await. It’s no wonder it has been repeatedly named to Conde Nast’s Gold List and recognized as a AAA Four Diamond Hotel!
Cooking up fun at Viking Cooking School
Just a short walk from The Alluvian, you’ll find the Viking Cooking School — an ideal spot for a fun group activity. Whether you’re hands-on in the kitchen or watching a demonstration, you’ll love learning new culinary skills with your friends. If you’re a fan of The Help , don’t miss their special class inspired by the film. You’ll master dishes like crispy fried chicken, feather-light biscuits and Minny’s famous Chocolate Pie. It’s a deliciously fun way to bond and enjoy some tasty Southern treats. No matter if you’re an aspiring cook or just looking to enjoy some delicious new recipes with friends, this is the place to be.
Exploring historic downtown
After cooking up a storm, take a leisurely stroll through historic downtown Greenwood. Pick up the Main Street Walking Tour brochure and you’ll be guided past charming landmarks like Cotton Row, the 1906 Leflore County Courthouse and the 1914 Carnegie Library. Don’t forget to snap some pics on Keesler Bridge — it’s a great spot for capturing insta-worthy memories with your girlfriends.
Downtown Greenwood is also a shopping haven. You’ll find everything from unique antiques to stylish boutiques. One must-stop is the Mississippi Gift Co., where you’ll find plenty of homemade art and treasures – all made in the Magnolia State. It’s a fun place to explore.
A literary adventure
For fans of the movie The Help , Greenwood offers an exciting driving tour that takes you to key filming locations. This self-guided tour will lead you through the very streets where the movie’s iconic scenes were shot. As you drive through town, you might find yourself imagining the stars like Octavia Spencer and Emma Stone walking the same paths. It's a fun and immersive way to connect with the story while exploring Greenwood’s beautiful neighborhoods and historic spots.
A creative outing
If you and your friends are looking to tap into your artistic side, don’t miss out on a painting class at Painting With Friends. This instructor-led art class is about having a great time while creating your own unique masterpiece. They provide everything you need — the canvas, easel, paint, brushes, apron and instructor — so you can just show up ready to have fun. Bring your own beverages and, if you’re feeling generous, a snack to share. It’s a relaxed and social way to enjoy some creative time together and leave with a keepsake to remember your trip.
Savoring local flavors
When it’s time to eat, Greenwood won’t disappoint. Treat yourselves to a meal at Fan and Johnny’s, where the chef has been recognized as a James Beard Award semifinalist. For a more upscale dining experience, Giardina’s and Serio’s offer a range of delicious options from pompano to porterhouse. If you’re in the mood for classic diner fare, Jeem’s Diner has some of the best burgers and homemade biscuits around.
For something different, try Mai Little China’s egg rolls or San Miguel Taqueria’s Pico de Gallo. You also can’t leave town without making a stop at Bread and Butter. The downtown restaurant serves wood-fired pizza, creative sandwiches and delicious specialty juices that you can’t find anywhere else. (If you’d like an *ahem* stronger drink, it’s BYOB.) Dining in Greenwood is a great way to enjoy quality time together and sample a variety of flavors that take your tastebuds through the Delta and beyond.
Watching the sunset
End your day with a stunning sunset view. Take a stroll to Keesler Bridge or find a quiet spot on a backroad to watch the Delta sky light up. It’s a peaceful and picturesque way to wrap up your girlfriends getaway, offering a moment of breathtaking beauty and reflection.
Greenwood is the ultimate destination for a girlfriend getaway. With stylish stays at The Alluvian, fun cooking classes at Viking Cooking School, charming historic sites, diverse dining options and stunning sunsets, you and your friends will have a memorable and relaxing trip. Pack your bags, gather your girls, and head to the Mississippi Delta for an escape that combines adventure, relaxation and Southern hospitality.

Tyler Perry to offer public tours of Atlanta production studio complex
A message from Tyler Perry Studios’ official social media account revealed that public tours will begin in 2020.
“Are you looking forward to going on an inspiring and historical tour of Tyler Perry Studios? We cannot wait to have you aboard!” the tweet reads. “The official tour dates and information will be announced next year, 2020. This is going to be [fire]!”
The 330-acre film complex is the first to be owned by an African-American. The former home of Confederate army base Fort McPherson, the facility houses 12 massive sound stages, including a replica of the White House used for Perry’s presidential television series, “The Oval.”
A star-studded grand opening attended by Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé, Whoopi Goldberg, Spike Lee and Will Smith took place Oct. 5.
Since opening, Tyler Perry Studios has hosted the Nov. 20 Democratic Presidential Debate and has been selected as the site for the 2019 Miss Universe Pageant on Dec. 8.
Scenes from “Black Panther” were also filmed there, as well as the hit AMC series “The Walking Dead .”
“My whole intention… my whole hope is that somebody gets inspired,” Perry told ABC News Radio about the studio. “If that happens then, I’m good, I’m good. So that is that, that is what I feel. I want to inspire somebody — to dream, to believe that they can do it too. No matter where he came from.”
Film studio tours have become a major attraction for tourists and film fans throughout the years. In Los Angeles, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios respectively offer tours, ranging in prices from $60 upwards to more than $350 for VIP packages.

On Friday, Tyler Perry Studios announced on social media that this indeed will come to fruition some time in 2020.
The pricing, frequency and launch date will come later .
Perry's studio is by far the largest in Georgia and, in terms of acreage, bigger than any of the studios in Los Angeles.
A Paramount Studios two-hour tour is $60 apiece seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ( The 4.5-hour VIP tour is $189 per person which includes lunch and greater access to behind-the-scenes areas. )
The Warner Brothers studio tour starts at $69 per person and runs up to 14 a day. There is a "classics' version at the same price and a deluxe $295 tour.

People Magazine Shares First Look At Tyler Perry’s Upcoming Netflix Film “The Six Triple Eight”
Image: Netflix
People Magazine has shared an exclusive first look at Tyler Perry’s latest film for Netflix, “The Six Triple Eight,” including the announcement of the streaming release date on Netflix on December 20, 2024. Netflix has also released a teaser trailer of the film ahead of release.
“The Six Triple Eight” is an epic drama that tells the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion: the only predominantly Black, all-female battalion during World War II. The film stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the battalion’s commanding officer, and Ebony Obsidian as officer Lena King.
Writer, director, and producer Tyler Perry shared with People that it was meeting the real life officer Lena King, who passed away earlier this year, that inspired his approach to crafting this film. “After one few-hour session with her I had a whole script in my head,” he says. Click here to read the full People article , which includes more insight from Perry and the cast, as well as exclusive photos.
Perry wrote an original screenplay for “The Six Triple Eight” based on an article written by historian Kevin M. Hymel that details the true story of the 855 women who joined the war effort and were assigned the incredible task of fixing the three-year backlog of undelivered mail — all while facing discrimination, unfamiliar surroundings, and the experience of living in a war-torn country. Their efforts and success sorting over 17 million pieces of mail allowed American soldiers to reconnect with their families and loved ones — delivering not just letters, but hope as well.
Perry wrote and directed the project, and produced it alongside Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig, and Carlota Espinosa. This film marks the latest release from Perry in collaboration with Netflix. Last year, Perry struck a multi-year first-look deal with the streamer, for which he will write, direct, and produce features.
“The Six Triple Eight” will be available to stream globally on Netflix on December 20, 2024. Watch Netflix’s teaser trailer below.
