UPDATED: The COVID-19 pandemic delayed plans for a tour indefinitely. No new start date has been announced as of July 27, 2021.

Last month, Tyler Perry expressed a desire in interviews to open his sprawling 330-acre studio to public tours.

Today, Tyler Perry Studios announced on social media that this indeed will come to fruition some time in 2020.

Pricing, frequency and launch date will come later.

His studio is by far the largest in Georgia and in terms of acreage, bigger than any of the studios in Los Angeles.

Besides his 12 sound stages, he’ll be able to show off back lots featuring retail shops, a baseball field, a jail, a trailer park, a four-sided mansion and a duplicate White House.

There are also historic buildings from the time it was Fort McPherson, an army base. He purchased the property in 2015 for $30 million and has invested more than $250 million into the site with more to come.

This could become a popular tourist site on top of places such as the Georgia Aquarium, Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and the Coca-Cola Museum.

For comparison, in Los Angeles, Sony Pictures Studios offers tours Monday through Friday four times a day for $50 per person . VIP tours are priced at $175 apiece. A more modest "coffee tour" is $135 per person .

A Paramount Studios  two-hour tour is $60 apiece seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ( The 4.5-hour VIP tour is $189 per person which includes lunch and greater access to behind-the-scenes areas. ) The Warner Brothers studio tour starts at  $69 per person and runs up to 14 a day. There is a “classics’ version at the same price and a deluxe $295 tour.

Hollywood turns out to celebrate Tyler Perry Studios Grand Opening

The new Tyler Perry Studios at Atlanta’s Fort MacPherson, the former home of the Third Army, has been operational and producing both film and television at an unprecedented pace for a few years now. It seems fitting, given Perry’s work ethic, that production began at nearly the same time construction crews started work on what is now the largest film studio on the East Coast. Three years later Perry welcomed famous friends to the completed studio to help him celebrate the tremendous accomplishment in style.

This past weekend Perry pulled out all the stops to host a gathering befitting of all that he has worked so hard for and celebrities lined up to wish him all the best and sing his praises.

The guest list included politicians like former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, Rep. Maxine Waters, Rep. John Lewis, and President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton; media figures CBS’s Gayle King, CNN’s Don Lemon, Tamron Hall and “The View’s“ Sunny Hostin; and award-winning creators Viola Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay.

“For people to drop what they’re doing in their very busy schedules to come and join me in this moment is beyond anything I could’ve imagined. It makes me happy. It makes me want to cry. It makes me grateful. It’s just I’m beyond, I’m over the moon right now.”

One of the centerpieces to the evening revolved around the naming of the individual sound-stages at the studio. The 12 new stages were dedicated to black stars that have been inspirational to Perry during his career. The stars included, Spike Lee, Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Will Smith, Cicely Tyson, Diahann Carroll, Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis, John Singleton, Sidney Poitier, Della Reese, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, and Harry Belafonte. As each name was read fireworks lit up the night sky.

Spike Lee spoke to Variety about the honor, “It means I’m a part of history. This is an historic night in American cinema. It’s never been done before. So I’m honored and humbled that my brother asked me part of it.”

Tiffany Haddish of “Nobody’s Fool” reminisced of her experience working at the impressive lot. “Every time that I came in to work here at Tyler Perry studios, it was the biggest smile on my face. Cause I know the history of this place — It was a Confederate union military base,” Haddish recalled. “Trying to keep us enslaved. Now it’s owned by a black man.”

The major motion picture studio, one of the largest production facilities in the country, showcases forty buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places, twelve purpose-built sound stages, 200 acres of greenspace and a diverse backlog. Step Onto Tyler Perry's 300-Acre Production Studio

Ask Tyler Perry how many times he’s visited the White House, and he has to pause to count. “Let me think: One, two, three—I think I’ve been there four times,” he says. “One of the best was at a dinner we had in the president’s private quarters. There were about five of us, and at the end of the night we were all sitting out on the Truman Balcony—man, that was something.” He chuckles. “That was the Obama White House,” he says, leaning into the name for emphasis.

Perry hasn’t been to the executive mansion lately, but the actor/writer/director/producer best known as the man behind dyspeptic granny Madea now has a White House of his very own. Specifically, a three-story, stucco replica of the commander-in-chief’s residence, built to 80 percent scale, which he erected as a set for his new BET drama, The Oval. The columns are load-bearing, the toilets flush, and every floor is wheelchair accessible. And the craziest part? “We built it in about 12 weeks!” he crows.

The faux White House is just the feather in the cap of the entertainment mogul’s most impressive enterprise to date: his 330-acre Tyler Perry Studios, which recently celebrated its grand opening. Built on the grounds of Fort McPherson, a former military base in Atlanta that Perry purchased in 2015, it is one of the largest production facilities in the country. There are 12 state-of-the-art soundstages (each named after an African American trailblazer in the entertainment industry), 200 acres of green space, and a dazzling back lot of sets that, in addition to the presidential manse, includes a bank, county jail, lakeside cabin, trailer park, suburban homes, and a commercial jet—all camera-ready. (The Walking Dead has already filmed several seasons here.) The grounds also include 40 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, ideal for any production in need of, say, a beautifully restored Victorian house. (FDR used to stay there when visiting the base; more recently it served as a location for Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.)

“Most production companies use soundstages,” says Paul Wonsek, who’s been Perry’s go-to production designer for the last eight years and worked on most of the studio buildings. “But Tyler builds real architectural structures for shooting. Nobody else works this way.”

“At heart, I’m a frustrated builder,” says Perry. “I think I would have been an architect if I hadn’t gone into entertainment.” Growing up in New Orleans, where he struggled through a childhood marked by physical and sexual abuse, he discovered that he could find comfort in the act of building physical shelter. A play fort beneath the porch of his family’s home was the first space he ever built for himself. “It had a concrete floor, and there were terrible mosquitoes,” he recalls. “But I painted it a robin’s-egg blue and stapled pictures to the walls.” The cramped cubbyhole, he says, was “a place where I could dream.” He would also often accompany his father to his job working in construction. “I learned how to do everything, from drilling concrete nails to putting in floor joists,” he says. The sense of possibility inherent in the work captivated him. “I loved seeing floor plans and thinking about how to improve them,” he says. “I started sketching out designs, and sometimes I’d get paid $10, $15, or $20 for a drawing.”

That love of designing and building has never left him. And Perry has indulged in this passion with the extravagance only a self-made multimillionaire who once lived out of his car can muster. “For the last 15 years I’ve always had two or three personal projects in construction,” he says. Among his properties are a French château–inspired mansion in Atlanta, a Tuscan-style estate in Beverly Hills, a log cabin in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and his own 25-acre, previously uninhabited island in the Bahamas, each house designed to his personal vision. “There was nothing there when I bought it,” he says of the Exumas property. “I had to bring in the water and electricity—even my own palm trees from Miami.”

Back in Atlanta, where Tyler Perry Studios is fully up and running, the multitasking mogul says he’s not even close to finished. After all, he still has those 200 acres of green space to work with. “I’m looking into creating a six-lane highway,” he says. And maybe even his own charming European-style city. “You know, something with winding cobblestone streets? We could use it for Paris.”

Tyler Perry penned an op-ed on Wednesday speaking out against alleged racial discrimination experienced by his friends, comedians Eric André and Clayton English.

“André and English were targeted and stopped by Clayton County Police Department (CCPD) officers, several months apart, on jet bridges in Atlanta’s airport while they were steps from boarding their flights,” Perry wrote. 

Despite the fact that both men had been cleared by TSA security, Perry wrote that the comedians were approached in plain-clothed police officers, alleging they were targeted because of “the color of their skin.”

“Of the hundreds of passengers stopped by CCPD’s special airport drug unit in the months between when André and English were stopped, a majority (56%) were Black, while only 8% of that airport’s domestic air travelers are Black,” he continued, citing information from André and English’s team at the Policing Project at New York University School of Law, as well as Jones Day, Lawrence & Bundy and Canfield Law.

Perry went on to claim that the officers may have stopped his friends with the intent of taking their money, alleging that when authorities stop travelers, “officers are allowed to seize any property they claim is involved in a crime, including cash.”

Per his report, “In the months between when André and English were stopped, CCPD raked in close to $1 million from travelers who never were charged with any crime.”

He added, “every act of racial discrimination is a broken promise, an affront to our dignity, an insult to Atlanta’s history and a vestige of a history that America must leave behind.”

Perry also noted that his film studio, located in Atlanta, welcomes “thousands of industry professionals every year to work in Atlanta.”

“When racial discrimination occurs unchecked, it threatens that growth,” Perry wrote. ” Black people must have the freedom to travel without worrying about being stopped because of the color of our skin.”

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to the Atlanta airport and Clayton County Police Department for comment.

He said that the engagements would even allow him to visit the prominent film production company, Tyler Perry Studios, and also meet with its owner Tyler Perry.

"In the context of his visit, the president will visit the Tyler Perry studios. He will be with Tyler Perry and other players within the Hollywood ecosystem [and] would be able to have a conversation with him in relation to how they can work together with Kenya and unlock the potential of film," he said.

The PS added that Ruto will have further meetings with players in the education sector to curate stronger partnerships and also ink a huge deal with global beverage distributor, Cocacola.

He noted that Ruto is expected to engage institutions of higher learning to foster ties in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) study fields.

"There will be a signing off of a major investment by Cocacola we are talking in the region of about Ksh.200 million investment. There is also the element of higher education collaboration particularly in terms of STEM collaboration where the president will engage with a number of high education institutions," he said.

According to the PS, Ruto will also meet Kenyans in diaspora in Atlanta, Georgia before heading to address a joint session of the United States Congress.

"This is the first State visit by an African head of state to the US since 2018. It is a reflection of the position that Kenya is held within the US and it represents a desire on the part of both parties to deepen relations," said Sing'oei.

Tyler Perry shoots scenes in Memphis for new movie 'Joe's College Road Trip'

If you thought you saw Tyler Perry on Beale Street this week, don't blame the Handy's Hurricanes from Rum Boogie Cafe.

The superstar actor-writer-producer-director was here Tuesday to shoot scenes for his new movie, Memphis and Shelby County Film & Television Commissioner Linn Sitler confirmed Wednesday.

The movie is titled "Joe's College Road Trip." The Netflix project began production earlier this month, with scenes also shot this week in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Filming also will take place in New Mexico, in early February.

The comedy-drama follows a grandfather and grandson on a road trip that includes visits to locations of cultural and historic significance to Black America. Perry, in a white Afro-style wig that is less extravagant than his famous Madea hairpiece, plays the grandfather.

In addition to shooting on Beale, the 54-year-old Perry and his traveling Tyler Perry Studios crew filmed outside the National Civil Rights Museum.

Jon Shivers, director of Beale Street for the Downtown Memphis Commission, said the Beale scenes mainly involved the grandfather and grandson (played by Jermaine Harris) driving up and down the street in the vintage red convertible that is their road-trip vehicle. Shot on what was a somewhat misty and slightly rainy night, the sequence took "a few hours" to complete, Shivers said.

"Any time we can showcase Beale and Downtown Memphis in a positive light in the national spotlight, we're going to do so," Shivers said. He said the street was not closed and Beale remained open during the filming, although the district was not very crowded that night.

Shivers said Perry's team began working out the logistics of the Beale Street visit about two weeks in advance of its arrival in Memphis. The filming was essentially a secret project, with no advance publicity released by Perry's team or local officials.

Written and directed by Perry, "Joe's College Road Trip" is one of two new movies the highly successful playwright-turned-filmmaker is shooting this month for Netflix. The other, to be shot at Tyler's home studios in Atlanta, is "Madea's Destination Wedding," the 13th in the series showcasing Perry's signature comedy creation, the straight-talking, pistol-packing matriarch known as Madea.

Too bad that production didn't come to Memphis because "Madea hits Beale" is a phrase with promise. However, Madea will make a cameo appearance in "Joe's College Road Trip," in scenes shot in Atlanta.

Tickets for Universal Orlando’s Premium Scream Night on Thursday, August 29, are also now available.
