Escape Room Review: Star Trek: Quantum Filament at Escapeology

Recently, the “Attractions Magazine” crew was invited out by Escapology Orlando to try their newest escape room, Star Trek: Quantum Filament. As big fans of Star Trek in all of its incarnations, we were very excited to try out this officially licensed escape room experience.

Star Trek escape game room.

This Star Trek escape game centers around the USS Discovery from the “Star Trek: Discovery” series and takes place within the timeline of the show. Fans of Star Trek will recognize key elements unique to the franchise, such as the communication badges and set design, while fans of “Star Trek: Discovery” specifically will get even more out of hearing the show’s characters and knowing about key events from the series. No knowledge of Star Trek is required to participate in the experience, but, as with any attraction centered around an Intellectual Property, familiarity with the show will only add to the enjoyment.

Star Trek Discovery Quantum Filament poster

In Star Trek: Quantum Filament, guests take the role of engineers from the far future, exploring a relic of humanity’s space-faring past. Of course, something goes wrong and the ship suffers severe damage which locks the crew down and strands your team just outside of the auxiliary control section. This, of course, means that your team are the only ones who can get the ship’s systems operational again before the antimatter containment field drops below 15% and destroys the Discovery, which should occur in, wouldn’t you know it, 60 minutes. (See the intro video below.)

Poking fun at the escape room tropes aside, we thought “repair the space ship” is a really solid theme for an escape room, which is underutilized. The time limit and urgency are organic, and best of all, no traditional locks! Unfortunately, it turns out to be a double-edged sword when a reliance on technology can lead to game (and immersion) breaking situations when the real world computer systems also don’t feel like cooperating, or worse, haven’t been tested enough.

We played Star Trek: Quantum Filament with a team of four experienced escapers and completed the game with about 20 minutes remaining. The puzzle progression was fairly linear and followed the typical pattern of completing a puzzle to reveal pieces of several other different puzzles. At this point, you have enough pieces to complete another puzzle, revealing more pieces for the remaining puzzles and giving you enough pieces to complete one of those. And repeat.

The décor and theming of the room are taken directly from the iconic Star Trek style architecture everyone knows. We had no issues with the scenery and effects that were present, we just wished more elements could have been included. A rumbling floor, red spinning warning lights, a klaxon, or other little touches would have made the experience more immersive. We also only heard the voices of the Star Trek crew. It would have been nice to have seen them on-screen. Some of the lines of dialog we heard seemed to be directly from the show, and others sounded like they may have been sound-alike voice actors. (You can hear the voice of “Michael Burnham” in the video below.)

Star Trek escape room screen

Our primary complaint about the room was the technological issues we had, including unresponsive touch screens and a certain game breaking situation we experienced that, to steal a term from video games, soft locked us and made the game unfinishable. Long story short, we found a partially erased code that corresponded to a puzzle which had apparently been removed from the game. When we entered this code, we were prompted to solve a puzzle that didn’t exist, leading to much confusion until the game master came in, saw the situation and announced we had basically won and let us out of the room. This conclusion to the experience left a bit of a bad taste in our mouths, taking away the joy that comes from putting in that final answer and opening the door and escaping. After mentioning this to the Escapology team, we are hopeful that they will take the time to remove this “extra” code entirely so no one else accidentally breaks the game.

In the end, we still enjoyed ourselves, but really felt this could have gone from an OK experience to a great one with the technological issues ironed out. Since this room recently opened in Orlando, we are hopeful that, with some more time, they can work those kinks out. We rate this a medium-difficulty room that is very linear, with a primary focus on pattern recognition puzzles. This is a perfect room for fans of “Star Trek” looking to escape into (or out of) the universe created from the franchise.

Star Trek: Quantum Filament first opened at their Las Vegas location about a year ago, but is now open at Escapology Orlando and in various other Escapology locations across America. For more information or to book a game for yourself ,visit  Escapology.com .

I was pleasantly surprised by the new experience. This was our first time doing any escape rooms and it was exciting. The price was a bit expensive for the 1 hr time limit. Would definitely come back but with a Groupon is a must.

My family loves the home escape room games from Amazon, but we’ve never done a real escape room together until we came for Escapology’s Murder Mansion. We had SO MUCH fun, everyone was very enthusiastic, friendly, and made the guarantee of our return. We had an hour to escape, but it felt like the blink of an eye with how much fun we had! The room was so detailed and interactive, we were engaged the whole time! 100% coming back and if you’re looking for something fun to fit into your night, this is on my highly recommended list!

Thank you for leaving such a thoughtful review! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed every aspect of your visit with us. We hope to see you all again soon! -The Escapology Team

Have been escaping here since 2015. Solid rooms with good decor and puzzles that make sense and flow. Just escaped The Lost City as our 133 room and it keeps on getting better. Deziree

Escape rooms are taking the United States by storm! The goal of the game is to find a way out of a locked room within the given time limit. Work as a team to solve logical puzzles, uncover clues, and follow the storyline to unravel the mystery. Each riddle brings you one step closer to the ultimate escape! Escape room games are great for a night out with friends, a date, a birthday celebration, or a team-building activity in the United States.

Welcome aboard the U.S.S. Discovery. As civilian engineers, you’ve been given a singular opportunity to inspect a piece of living history. More than 900 years ago, this Crossfield-class starship represented state of the art 23rd century Starfleet technology. Your mission is to travel aboard Discovery while it makes a routine patrol, evaluating each of its systems in preparation for the host of upgrades the ship requires to bring it up to modern 32nd century standards. Your first order of business is escaping your turbolift and finding a way to communicate with senior members of the crew. If you can re-establish communications, you may be able to work together to repair the antimatter containment field before the strength falls below 15% which is projected to be in precisely 60 minutes time. If you’re successful, you’ll have saved Discovery and the entire crew. By modern standards, this 23rd century starship belongs in a museum, but its technology is all you have to help you take command of this situation. Can you complete your mission and save the ship? Discovery’s crew is counting on you. Failure is not an option...

The room was all technology-based with no traditional locks. Some of the key pads weren't as responsive, but overall an easier room with interesting design and theming.

Anyone who is a fan of Star Trek, would definitely love this room. I am someone who has never seen the movies, so for me, it just felt like a technologically advanced room. I would say the puzzles were good, but I think escapology offers better rooms for people who are looking for more of a challenge. Not to say this room is bad, I just think it is only worth it if you are a fan of the Star Trek Universe. I was not a fan of the no lock style room, but that may just be a personal preference. I am definitely more of a fan of classic escape rooms.

Puzzle Quality: 15/20 Looks/Theme: 13/15 GameMaster Rating: 9/10 Operation Fluidity: 5/5 Combined Rating: 42/50 Overall Difficulty: 3.5/10 Quick Notes: - Multiple rooms, small in size. - Very immersive, electronic puzzles. CATEGORIES EXPLAINED IN MORE DETAIL BELOW: Puzzle Quality - How intuitive, logical, and unique the puzzles were. How well do the puzzles fit the theme? Looks/Theme - How much effort, time, and money went into making an immersive and unique atmosphere. GameMaster Rating - How attentive and helpful was the game master? Were the hints given in a timely manner and were they quality hints that helped but did not give you the solution too directly? Operation Fluidity - Was the game reset properly? Was it clean inside the room? Were the code entry and solution methods working properly as intended? Overall Difficulty - This is fairly subjective but is mostly correlated to how many total puzzles and how time consuming they each are compared against the 60 minute time limit that almost all rooms have. Combined Rating - Simply a total tally out of 50 of the four main categories. (Puzzle Quality and Looks/Theme are weighted a little more because they are the most important parts of having a good experience). The higher the number, the better the room! Just remember that a 5/10 or 7.5/15 or a 25/50 combined rating is an AVERAGE rating (for some reason in most people’s heads, a 5/10 is a below average or bad rating). So if a room has a combined rating of above 25, then it is a quality room and a good experience that I would recommend! It has to be a really well done room to score above a 35.

The Star Trek graphic design is on point and the tasks you have to perform on the ship feel suitably sci-fi-esque. A mixture of logic and physical puzzles which often require communication as information is located on opposite sides of the room. My only real complaint is that it ends rather suddenly. I would have liked a proper finale. It’s fine, but not exceptional.

This one was fun- no locks and a lot of tech, as you would expect aboard a space ship. Very linear and you were often guided as to what you have to do next. Better for a small group although there’s lots of space- just not a lot to do at the same time.

Cool room! Pretty nice addition to the Escapology catalog. Nice and high tech. Puzzles were pretty nifty, with the exception of a few “what do we do with this” moments. I had fun and if you’re looking for a high tech space room, this is it!

Escapology Austin – Star Trek: Quantum Filament [Review]

There’s been a polarity shift in the antimatter containment system…

REA Reaction

This room was defined not only by its strong execution of the Star Trek theme but also by the palpable intensity it developed through its story, set, and the difficulty of its puzzles.

Star Trek fans (and Discovery aficionados in particular) will recognize characters, voices, iconography, and ambiance in this room. It leaned into the pseudo-scientific, technological nature of Star Trek, speaking more to the geeky side of the series than to any of its specifically memorable situations or tasks. Most of the sense of adventure came from a couple of appropriately jarring and intense sequences. The rest of the game was a marathon of dense puzzles.

As a puzzling experience, the room was challenging in ways that suited the theme well but won’t appeal to everyone. Most puzzles involved 1) multiple levels of converting information into different forms, 2) interpreting and/ or entering many alphanumeric codes, 3) executing the solution process 6-8 times, and 4) no intermediate feedback. Combinatorially, then, the opportunity for error was staggering. On top of this, somehow none of the touchscreen keypads offered a backspace key. Come on, 23rd century technology!

A science lab on a star ship.

However, the strength of this particular design was that each puzzle benefited significantly from coordination among team members, usually enabling all four of us to contribute simultaneously. We all kept busy and felt like we played a significant role in saving the ship.

Ultimately, as a band of casual-to-mid-level Trekkies, we enjoyed role-playing on a convincing starship set and felt that our victory was hard-won. This was one of Escapology’s best games and is worth checking out if you have one in town.

Who is this for?

  • Adventure seekers
  • Puzzle lovers
  • Scenery snobs
  • Star Trek fans
  • Best for players with at least some experience
  • For the legit Star Trek ambiance
  • For plenty of opportunities to self-organize and cooperate

While we were analyzing the “ancient” Discovery starship, the ship was hit by a quantum filament, trapping us in a turbolift. We had to escape the turbolift, enable communications with the crew, and repair the antimatter containment field.

The story progressed in this game via communication with a handful of characters from the Discovery Star Trek series. Even though the substance of these messages was immaterial to gameplay, they were a fun thematic touch that fans should appreciate.

We spent the game aboard an impressive rendition of the starship Discovery. The Star Trek ambiance was pervasive, complete with sliding doors, dense schematics, futuristic paneling, and touch screens galore. Even the fonts screamed “Star Trek.” Other effects in the room contributed a realistic sense of urgency to the situation.

A hallway on a starship.

Escapology Austin’s Star Trek – Quantum Filament was a standard escape room with a fairly high level of difficulty .

Puzzling required close attention to the environment, pattern-matching and decoding, painstaking care in execution, and multiplayer coordination.

➕ The set was on point. We not only felt like we had boarded a Star Trek starship, but we could also feel the gravity of the situation. Lights, sounds, and other effects convincingly communicated the intensity of our mission.

➖ We are fairly confident that one display failed to update with critical information early in the game, and none of the hints helped us recognize this issue.

➕ One particularly engaging puzzle was framed in an intense and compelling way. It focused our attention on a believable task, and the clues and solution process served the task well.

➖ Many puzzles had a belabored execution phase that introduced huge opportunity for error with little support for troubleshooting.

➕/➖ There were touchscreens EVERYWHERE. These absolutely needed to exist to complete the Star Trek aesthetic. However, they added an unintentional element of difficulty to the experience. Sometimes they did not accept inputs responsively. Other times they accepted inputs too responsively.

➕/➖ An abundance of schematic, flowchart-type information was delivered via display screens that updated throughout the experience. The dynamic nature of these screens was true to the theme, but it was also incredibly easy to overlook the changes given the narrow color scheme and similarity of the information being presented.

➕/➖ Almost every puzzle involved interpreting or entering a lengthy series of numbers and letters. True to Star Trek! Tedious for puzzling.

➕ This room included a well-themed progress indicator. I love progress indicators and find them especially valuable in intense, dense rooms like this one.

➕ Although the game flow was linear, each puzzle benefited from multiple participants and felt good to solve together. All four of us stayed busy throughout the game.

❓ As a room built around licensed IP with an extensive fan base, this experience may attract fans who would be quite overwhelmed at its complexities. Unlike Escapology’s Scooby Doo room, which catered to escape room novices as a way of serving its broader fan base, this room demanded escape room skill.

➕ This was one of those rooms that begged for a costume. Many thanks to our friends for making it happen!
