Embark On This Waterfall Loop In Minnesota To See 8 Breathtaking Scenic Falls

Greyson Murphy

Alright folks, let’s talk waterfalls.

Because when it comes to Minnesota, our minds zip straight into the North Shore.

I get it—the beauty of the state’s waterfalls along this picturesque stretch is unparalleled.

But here’s the kicker: Minnesota is not just a one-trick pony.

Oh no, it’s a treasure trove of waterfalls scattered across its vast terrain.

So, I’m about to unveil a waterfall loop that will take you on a grand tour of some of the most stunning falls in the Land of 10,000 Lakes .

And for our friends residing in the southern part of the state, this is going to be a revelation of sorts.

From familiar favorites to hidden wonders, this scenic Minnesota waterfalls road trip is slated to stun and amaze.

waterfall loop 1

Now, this Minnesota waterfall loop is no measly stroll in the park.

It traverses a wide stretch of southern Minnesota, starting from the bustling cityscape of Minneapolis and quickly heading west.

The route chalks up to about 340 miles.

Perfect for a reviving weekend getaway , wouldn’t you agree?

So, buckle up because we’re in for a wild ride!

Minnehaha Falls

waterfall loop 2

Let’s kick off our journey with a crowd favorite: Minnehaha Falls.

Standing tall at 53 feet, this urban waterfall is a beloved retreat for the city slickers looking for a quick respite in nature’s lap.

The trails around the waterfall offer panoramic views from both the top and bottom.

And let me tell you, the tranquil Minnehaha Creek makes for a postcard-perfect backdrop.

No wonder the Minnehaha Falls is the poster child for Minnesota waterfalls.

Vermillion Falls

waterfall loop 3

Moving on, we head east into Hastings.

Here, tucked away in the cityscape, you’ll chance upon Vermillion Falls.

This 35-foot waterfall cascading down the Vermillion River is a common pitstop.

While you’re here, explore the intriguing ruins nearby.

There are serene spots near the falls perfect for a picnic or a quiet moment of contemplation.

Don’t miss out on the myriad wonders Hastings has to offer.

Hidden Falls

waterfall loop 4

Our next stop is southwards, at the Nerstrand-Big Woods State Park.

The park is famed for the Big Woods biome it preserves over its sprawling 2,800 acres.

But the star attraction is the Hidden Falls.

This tiny waterfall, a mere 20 feet, nestled amidst the lush woods, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

It’s like finding a secret candy bar in your coat pocket, just much, much wetter.

The perfect place for a family picnic or a sneaky hide-and-seek game.

Just remember, no peeking at the falls until it’s your turn to hide!

Caron Falls

waterfall loop 5

Next, we head towards Northfield, Minnesota.

Here, another secret waterfall awaits—Caron Falls.

What it lacks in height, it compensates with its serene tranquility and seclusion.

It’s a perfect spot to soak in the serene ambiance and the gently flowing waters of this tree-lined creek waterfall.

Let’s not forget, folks, that the journey to Caron Falls is half the fun.

It’s a little like a treasure hunt, but instead of a chest of gold, you’re rewarded with a breathtaking waterfall.

And trust me, there’s nothing quite like the sound of water hitting the rocks, a symphony of nature if you will.

This quaint spot is not just for the outdoorsy types but for anyone who appreciates beauty.

Minnemishinona Falls

waterfall loop 6

Our next stop is Minnemishinona Falls.

Tucked away just outside of Mankato, this 42-foot waterfall is a well-kept secret.

A scenic overlook leading to a walking bridge offers stunning views of the deep gorge that the waterfall flows into.

As one of the tallest falls in southern Minnesota, it’s a sight to behold.

Minneopa Falls

waterfall loop 7

Close by, we have the more popular Minneopa Falls at Minneopa State Park.

This waterfall boasts two drops—one a modest few feet, and the other a dramatic 40 feet drop into a rocky gorge.

A trail leads down into the gorge for a closer look, but the best views are from the scenic stone bridge that crosses the waterfall.

The park is teeming with picnic spots for munching on sandwiches while you soak in the beauty of the falls.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore the bison drive that’s home to a herd of, you guessed it, bison!

Just keep your snacks to yourself, or you might just get more interaction with the wildlife than you bargained for!

Red Rock Falls

waterfall loop 8

Next up, we have Red Rock Falls.

Located in the lesser-known Red Rock County Park in quaint Sandborn, Minnesota, this waterfall flows into a deep, rock-lined gorge.

It may be small, but it’s a sight for sore eyes.

And don’t let the size fool you!

Red Rock Falls, while not a Niagara , has a charm that even the grandest waterfall might envy.

The gorge, with its rock-lined sides, has a secret garden vibe.

It’s the perfect spot for a family picnic.

Kids will love the adventure, adults will appreciate the tranquility, and your camera will thank you for all the stunning shots!

Ramsey Falls

waterfall loop 9

Last but certainly not least, we have Ramsey Falls at the sprawling Alexander Ramsey Park.

From trails to picnic areas to a zoo, this park has it all.

But the pièce de résistance is the ruggedly beautiful Ramsey Falls.

This tall waterfall makes a dramatic drop into a rocky gorge below.

It is a sight to behold from any distance, and a hike to the top of the waterfall is a thrill not to be missed.

And there you have it!

Eight stunning waterfalls, one unforgettable journey.

Check out the full route, including driving directions, on this interactive map .

We just loved the cave and our guide. Totally fascinating. The number of steps they highlight is not too bad, as they are spread out. Guide was informative and patient- allowing us enough time to take in this amazing place. Also loved the selection of stone artifacts and items in the gift shop.

There were a lot of interesting features in this cave (fossils, echo chamber, waterfall, spring, etc) ! It had a little bit of everything. I think my favorite was the purple phosphorus deposits and how it absorbed the UV light & glowed. It was fine for our 8 year old and I carried the 4 almost 5 year old down a couple of the staircases just so we were not going too slow but the 4 year old did a lot of it herself also.

We had such a fun time and would do it again. Our guide was very nice and patient with our four year old. He even offered him a flashlight which was the highlight for him. The stairs make for a nice little workout at the end.

Really interesting activity that I high recommend. Our tour guide was excellent. As mentioned, there are a number of stairs to climb, especially when leaving the cave at the end of the tour.

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff! Our tour guys definitely knew her stuff and very personable! The cave was great, great walking paths! If we go again, we'll make more of a day with mini golf and gem panning! Definitely a must see!!!

If you’re within driving distance, don’t miss it! Such a treasure! The guide was fun and very knowledgeable. Save some energy for the climb at the end.😉

Minnesota waterfall awards, 12 of the best falls across the state.

By Simon Peter Groebner • Star Tribune •  May 3, 2024

By Simon Groebner Star Tribune •  May 3, 2024

Why are we obsessed with chasing waterfalls? After all, when faced with a drop in elevation, what a Minnesota river does next — with the possible exception of the Devil’s Kettle — is fairly predictable.

But whether our favorite waterfalls are on North Shore rivers making rapid descents to Lake Superior, or southern Minnesota creeks beating their way to the Mississippi, or even on underground streams, each has its own impressive geology, its own personality, its own story to tell.

A waterfall is often the prize at the end of a long journey, a satisfying climax to a road trip or hike. Some of our favorites even double as refreshing swimming holes. All belong to the public, but we pause for a reminder that getting closer to waterfalls can be tricky — even dangerous — so tread lightly and use your head.

Read on for 12 of the biggest, most interesting and/or visually pleasing falls in the state — along with an award for each one.

Video by Aaron Lavinsky, Star Tribune.

Drone photography and videography made possible through the permission of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Trails.

Tallest inside the state

High falls of the baptism river.

Unlike the twice-as-tall High Falls of the Pigeon River, this also-imaginatively named cataract in Tettegouche State Park is the tallest one entirely within Minnesota’s borders. It’s the picture of a mountain falls, with mineral-reddened water descending in two or three chutes. Below, the Baptism River might be shallow enough not only for your sacrament of choice, but wading closer for full immersion.

Getting there: It’s a vigorous 45-minute hike from the Superior Hiking Trail lot on Hwy. 1 — or take the easier 1.5-mile trail from the main entrance of Tettegouche.

Photo by Aaron Lavinsky, Star Tribune

High Falls of the Pigeon River

The tallest waterfall in Minnesota has an asterisk: This international torrent is shared with Canada. At 3,200 gallons per second, it’s a powerful symbol of peace. The spray hits your face before you even reach the overlook on the U.S. side. A rainbow might emerge from the deep, churning gorge. No wonder the Anishinaabe and French famously portaged their canoes through these parts: There’s no navigating this craggy river.

Getting there: At Grand Portage State Park on the tip of Minnesota’s Arrowhead, there’s a 1-mile round-trip hike (paved and boardwalk) to the falls.

Video by Aaron Lavinsky, Star Tribune

Most aesthetically pleasing

Minneopa falls.

A 10-foot upper falls and 39-foot lower falls carve out a wide bowl in the sandstone of Minneopa State Park. When Minneopa Creek is running high, the face of the lower falls is almost a perfect square. See it from above, or take the stairs down to get up close and personal. Stick around and try to spot the reestablished herd on the park’s Bison Drive.

Getting there: Minneopa’s southern section, 3 miles west of Mankato.

Photo by Bre McGee, Special to the Star Tribune

Most unexpected

Ramsey falls.

The lush Ramsey Park in the town of Redwood Falls is a surprising oasis amid southwestern Minnesota’s plains. Here, Ramsey Creek twists through a slender gorge, culminating in this rugged 30-footer. Cliff jumping has long been banned, but able hikers might wade into the creek below for an immersive view.

Getting there: In Ramsey Park, head to parking lot No. 4 for the observation deck, or lot No. 3 to walk there via a suspension bridge through the woods.

Video by Simon Peter Groebner, Star Tribune

Most underground

Niagara cave waterfall.

Deep below the karst landscape of southeastern Minnesota, water from subterranean aquifers has carved out vast limestone caverns. That explains the “Goonies”-esque flume that gives Niagara Cave its name. The dramatically lit plunge is a highlight on a fascinating one-hour, half-mile guided tour, which includes fossils, rock formations, 275 stairs and a wedding “chapel.”

Getting there: Tours of the cave outside Harmony are offered daily May-Aug. and weekends in April and Sept.-Oct. ($20.95)

Photo by Brian Peterson, Star Tribune

Weirdest falls

Devil’s kettle.

In an M.C. Escher-esque optical illusion, one of two descending halves of the Brule River seems to disappear into a cauldron of volcanic rock. Or does it? Scientists recently used dyes to prove what happens to the diabolical cascade, but honestly, we don’t want to know. We’re content with leaving it a fun, confounding mystery.

Getting there: At Judge C.R. Magney State Park, hike a mile up the rocky Devil’s Kettle Trail (two hours roundtrip), then down 175 stairs.

Most historic

Vermillion falls.

It’s the only waterfall in Minnesota that’s 500 feet downstream from an Applebee’s. But once you’re ensconced in the winding overlook trails at Vermillion Falls Park in Hastings, you’d hardly know it. This Vermillion River beauty once powered the 1853 Hastings Mill, still in business and looming over the falls. Look for the spired ruins of the nearby Ramsey Mill, which burned in 1894.

Getting there: Vermillion Falls Park is just off Hwy. 61 in Hastings.

Video by Simon Groebner, Star Tribune

Most interactive

Hidden falls.

These not-quite-hidden falls are at the crossroads of trails in the hardwood- and wildflower-filled Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. The site is often just a dry ledge, but when it’s been raining, the seasonal Prairie Creek unfurls a broad, smooth aquatic curtain. Kids and adults can walk into the shallow creek and splash in the thin wall of water.

Getting there: Take the park’s gentle, half-mile Hidden Falls Trail.

Photo by Jeff Wheeler, Star Tribune

Most iconic

Gooseberry falls, approx. 30 feet (middle falls).

Beloved Gooseberry is up there with the Split Rock Lighthouse as a visual symbol of Minnesota. And the whole Gooseberry River estuary is fun to explore, with a series of four cascades hurtling toward Lake Superior, plus ancient lava flows, river islands and pedestrian bridges galore. And explore people do, with more than 750,000 visitors every year.

Getting there: Gooseberry Falls State Park is 12 miles north of Two Harbors.

Most secluded

Wolf creek falls.

While most waterfalls immediately resume as a river, this lovely one in east-central Minnesota issues into a deep, cliff-ringed lagoon, where we could while away a summer afternoon. The creek then trickles into the Kettle River, downstream from the Hell’s Gate rapids. Howling coyotes, not wolves, ushered us away at dusk.

Getting there: Hike the Quarry Loop and Wolf Creek trails in Banning State Park (a 3.7-mile loop), or it’s a 1-mile hike from Robinson Park in Sandstone.

Most adventurous

Illgen falls.

Illgen might be our personal favorite falls on the North Shore: an intimate spot for a vigorous swim. View it safely from above, or climb down to the rocks below and jump into the punchbowl. We can’t swim all the way to the falls without being forced back by the Baptism River’s powerful flow, but it’s fun trying. Fair warning: The trail is steep, rocks slippery and current strong. Intermediate hiking and swimming skills a must.

Getting there: Find the less-used side entrance to Tettegouche State Park, 1.5 miles west of Hwy. 61 on Hwy. 1.

Photo by Stephen Regenold, Special to the Star Tribune

Minnehaha Falls

Helping usher Minnehaha Creek waters from Lake Minnetonka to the Mississippi, and celebrated in Longfellow’s poem “Song of Hiawatha,” Minnehaha Falls is a historic symbol of Minneapolis, enthralling 19th-century visitors and still drawing daily crowds. Please don’t take your engagement photos in the steep rock shelter behind the falls, although many have.

Getting there: Minnehaha Regional Park, 4801 S. Minnehaha Drive, Mpls.

Minnesota Waterfall Map: Chase Waterfalls with this Digitial Map

This post may include affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I (The Winding Road Tripper) earn from qualifying purchases.  Read more .

If you like waterfalls, then a road trip to Minnesota will not disappoint.

With over 100 known waterfalls throughout the state, there are plenty of waterfalls to keep you busy for any entire waterfall chasing adventure.

The majority of the waterfalls are located in the northern part of the state, but you’ll also find gems in urban and other regions around the state.

If you want a great road trip, check out the North Shore of Minnesota from Duluth to Grand Portage. We did this trip in July 2020 and loved every minute of it. So many waterfalls and many are easily accessible from the road.

This map was created with the help of the book Waterfalls of M innesota by Lisa Crayford. This is a must-have book to keep in the car with you when you head out on your Minnesota waterfall adventures. It gives detailed instructions for finding each waterfall location. Which can be difficult for some of the remote waterfalls.

Minnesota Waterfall Facts

How many waterfalls are in minnesota.

There are over 100 known waterfalls in Minnesota that are accessible to the public.

What is the tallest waterfall in Minnesota?

High Falls on the Pigeon River is the tallest waterfall in Minnesota.

Located on the border of Canada and Minnesota near Grand Portage, High Falls tumbles 92-120 feet down. This waterfall can have a significant flow of water especially in the spring and early summer. Therefore, you may want to carry a rain jacket with you when you view the falls.

Tips for Visiting Minnesota Waterfalls

Use a map that doesn’t rely on cellular service.

Cell service can be intermittent when traveling anywhere, so it’s not recommended that you rely solely on your phone’s maps system.

Here are two things you can do to help make sure you don’t get lost:

  • Have a paper map with you. You can use your trusty old road atlas .
  • Before you leave for your trip, download a map of the area in either Google Maps or Apple Maps so you can use it offline (when you don’t have cellular service).  This is a critical step for any road trip adventure.

Don’t Follow Google Maps Blindly

While we love Google Maps we have found that it takes us on some strange routes while traveling in more rural areas.

Google seems to want to take you on the most efficient route regardless of the type of road or road blockages you may encounter. We’ve been directed to go down dirt roads that were not passable with our two-wheel drive van and had to turn around.

Therefore, be mindful of where Google is telling you to go and don’t be afraid to override the given directions

Leave No Trace Behind

One of the ways we can make sure these beautiful areas can be enjoyed by all is to leave no trace when visiting. Other than some footprints, the next person to view the waterfall should have no clue that someone was here before.

Therefore, pack out what you brought in. This includes any toilet paper if nature calls while you are on the trails. A plastic ziplock bag is perfect for packing out used toilet paper.

Get Minnesota Waterfall Guide Book

The book Waterfalls of MInnesota by Lisa Crayford is a great resource for anyone exploring Minnesota’s delightful waterfalls.

This book gives details on each waterfall including, GPS coordinates, detail directions on how to find the falls, walking distance to falls, and trail condition. It also give tips on viewing each one and has some lovely pictures.

Bring Bug Spray

Many of these waterfalls are located in areas that are prone to having a large mosquito population. One of the worst things is getting to a waterfall and not being able to enjoy it because you are getting eaten alive my mosquitos.

Be Mindful of Private Property

The waterfalls noted on the map are all currently on public land or accessible with a fee. When exploring these waterfalls, there may be private land around the waterfall.

Be mindful of any private property or no trespassing signs. Out of respect for property owners, do not venture into these restricted areas while on your waterfall adventure.

Summer 2022: Your Guide To The Ultimate Minnesota Waterfall Road Trip!

The kids are barely out of school for the year, and your already looking for ways to keep your kids entertained. Why not take a family road trip to check out what some have called the 'ultimate waterfall' road trip up in Northern Minnesota.

Not many would think of waterfalls when they think of Minnesota, let alone Northern Minnesota, but there are plenty of waterfalls along the arrowhead region of the state, and what's great is that many of them are in places where everyone can enjoy their majestic beauty. Here are 7 state parks you drive to and thru to check out the 'ultimate' Minnesota waterfall road trip!

Grand Portage State Park

You can either start at Grand Portage or end there, as it's home to Minnesota's tallest waterfall! The MnDNR page for Grand Portage says it best! "Take in the majesty and scenic wonder of Minnesota's tallest waterfall! Three viewing decks at High Falls provide park visitors with various vantage points for photography or quiet contemplation." Just know that Grand Portage right now has got ALOT of water flowing over the falls, you will get wet, and rainjackets are recommended.

Judge C.R. Magney State Park

Judge C.R. Magney State Park boasts waterfalls, and it falls along the Superior Hiking Trail. You might have already been to the 'Judge' before as it is home to Devil's Kettle, where the Brule River splits in two, and on one side it's the traditional waterfall, while the other side plunges into a hole, and doesn't seem to meet back up with the Brule. Visitors should note that this spring, with all the rain, portions of the park are still closed due to high water and washouts, along with some construction going on. This would be one of those stops you'd want to call ahead and see what's open and what isn't.

Cascade River State Park

This is one of the most convenient state parks to run across as you can check out a TON of attractions in an hour. The MnDNR recommends if you've only got a little bit of time to simply "Discover the Cascades, a series of five small waterfalls, and the Cascade Falls on a half-mile hike on the Cascade River Lower Loop." This park also is dealing with high water, but so far none of the trails are closed, and you can still get around, but with all of that water, the water is really flowing over the falls. You might want to dress appropriately, as you might be getting wet.

Temperance River State Park

Located in Silver Bay, off Highway 61, you can take in a milder flowing waterfall along the Temperance River, skip rocks in the gorge, or simply relax along the beach. The waterfall at Temperance isn't as spectacular as some of the other parks but it's worth a stop for all of the views available to those who want to get out and enjoy Minnesota during summer. You'll find a nice view of the waterfall in the Upper Gorge portion of the park. Currently, there aren't any high water warnings in the park but call ahead to check.

George H. Crosby Manitou State Park

George Crosby offers another grouping of cascades to check out for fans of waterfalls. The MnDNR page lists them as something to "enjoy...after a gorgeous hike through a rugged landscape." No posted high water issues at this State Park, and it offers up chances to trout fish for those looking at giving that a try.

Tettegouche State Park

Perhaps one of the most known of the listing of State Parks featuring waterfalls along the North Shore/Arrowhead region, Tettegouche offers fans of waterfalls some really breathtaking sights. The Baptism River flows through Tettegouche and offers those willing the walk a chance to view "the Cascades Waterfall" surrounded by stately pine trees. Unfortunately due to all the rain, the DNR website states that "the High Falls bridge is CLOSED due to flood damage." Hopefully, they can get the bridge back open later this summer.

Gooseberry Falls State Park

The furthest South, therefore closest to us, State Park is Gooseberry Falls. It's wildly popular, and often a stop either coming from or to the Split Rock Light House. Not only does the park offer camping and hiking, but it also has an electric vehicle charging station and fat bike trails for use.

Go in any order you want, but this might be one of those trips that you take once or every year with your family or friends as waterfalls are always different every time you see them.

You likely know the mighty Mississippi originates in Lake Itasca and that Minnesota is the land of (more than) 10,000 lakes. What most people don’t know, and only a local could tell you, is that many of the state parks are built around the best and brightest of these soothing yet exhilarating natural creations. This volcanic region formed billions of years ago, the same one responsible for agate formation.

From Duluth, drive north along Minnesota’s State Highway 61 to see most of these waterfalls. Hikers follow the Superior Hiking Trail inland, with camping spots along the route, to discover these waterfalls. It’s common to use mile markers along the North Shore to quickly identify your stops.

Pro Tip: Springtime and after heavy rains are the best time to visit.

Gooseberry Falls State Park (Mile 39).

1. Gooseberry Falls State Park (Mile 39)

If you love waterfalls, you will be in your own personal heaven with the five located here. Its Native American name is “Gitchi Gami.” At full flood (in the spring), they are spectacular. The park covers 1,600 acres and offers 20 trails for hikers and bikers to explore. There are campsites available and it is one of the most popular parks in Northern Minnesota.

Great news for families: the middle falls are accessible for both strollers and wheelchairs. A gentle slope allows accessibility to different parts of the waterfalls. The visitor center has informative exhibits, a gift shop, and restrooms.

Split Rock Falls (Mile 51.3).

2. Split Rock Falls (Mile 51.3)

West of 61, south of the Split Rock Visitor Center (with amenities), it’s the hiker’s choice whether you take the 1-mile or 5-mile trek to Split Rock Falls. The best way to identify you’re in the right spot is the sign for “Split Rock River.” Park the car along the highway, climb through birch trees a half-mile, take the right fork, and you’ll reach the 20-foot waterfalls tumbling over grey rock.

If you hike in another 0.8 miles, you’ll spy a red rock gorge with twin red pillars and 50-foot cliffs. If you go further still, you’ll see additional waterfalls along the trail before you reach the river where the true seekers of great Lake Superior views will get wet crossing the river (only when it’s low water, never while it’s rushing) to the high east trail.

Beaver River Falls (Mile 58.7).

3. Beaver River Falls (Mile 58.7)

One of only two waterfalls, it’s possible to drive by along Lake Superior’s North Shore, the Beaver River drops in sections a total of 300 feet above the Highway 61 bridge. For the best photographs, take the pedestrian walkway on the north side of Highway 61.

4. Cascade Falls (Mile 59.4)

Tettegouche State Park contains four waterfalls: Cascade, Two Step, High Falls, and Illgen.

Three trails along the Baptism River allow you options for waterfall choices based on the time you have available and the amount of energy you’d like to expend. The main trail starts with an uphill climb and seemingly never-ending stairs which leads to the Two Step Falls.

If you catch your second wind, and you should, make the effort to get to the High Falls, at 100 feet, which can be viewed from below or from above via a swing bridge. Remember, it’s 3 miles downhill, which typically goes faster than the way up.

I would not consider any of these three waterfalls accessible to those with limited mobility, though the trail from the visitor center to the Cascade Falls, the smallest of the three, is less strenuous and 2 miles round trip.

To take the easiest route to reach the Illgen Falls, drive to Mile 70.7, catch a parking spot at the pull-off, and hike 0.2 miles. In spring, this 40-feet high waterfall rushes across the entire ledge. When the river is slower, you’ll view a steady cascade down the center.

5. Caribou River Falls (Mile 79)

If you’re ready for about 150 more stairs, this 1.2-mile hike will take you up nearly 100 feet in the first half mile past the first bench on the spur trail. Make a right and you’ll find the 35-foot falls over gray basalt rock framed by cedar and pine. Keep in mind that this wayside is seasonal. It’s not plowed or accessible during winter.

Cross River Falls (Mile 80.6).

6. Cross River Falls (Mile 80.6)

Hop back in the car and back into the parking lot where restrooms and picnic tables can be enjoyed before or after witnessing these 100-foot falls roll down and under the roadway before dropping beneath the bridge on the south side.

Temperance River State Park.

7. Temperance River Falls (Mile 86.6)

Temperance river state park .

Minnesotans’ tongue-in-cheek sense of humor may be displayed by the name of this river. Said to originate because it’s the only river that empties into Lake Superior without a (sand) bar, there’s nothing moderate about the river itself. Eight deaths have been reported here in the past two decades, so it may not be a good place for children or dogs.

But if you’d like a 2-mile hike with three waterfalls, this is a great stop for adults. The river has carved out gorges for the Upper Falls, Hidden Falls, and Lower Cascades to traverse. The simplest waterfall to see is the Lower Cascades that flow directly into Lake Superior, just a quarter-mile loop.

After parking along the highway, look up through the narrow gap before going up often slippery stone steps to the cliffside overlook. Follow the river through stands of cedar to the Upper Falls.

The fun part is watching the water rushing through the gorge.

There are restrooms and a visitor center store.

A Low Wide Angle Long Exposure Shot of the Rushing Onion River of Northern Minnesota

8. Onion River Stair Step Falls (Mile 99.8)

More stairs await you to hike a little more than a mile above the river to the cascades, then beyond the river’s mouth about a half-mile to see Stair Step Falls. They’re best seen in spring, not only because the rush is that much more dramatic, but because vegetation makes it harder to spot or photograph in summer or fall.

9. Cascade Falls And Cascades (Mile 107.3)

Cascade falls, cascade river state park.

On a 2-mile stretch of river flowing into Lake Superior sits a 900-foot descent. Within the last 400 yards to Lake Superior are four cascades, the highest falls rising approximately 30 feet. There are trails on either side of the water with a bridge, making it possible to loop your way across the river.

The rock formations and zigzagging path between the cascades make this one of the most beautiful parks to visit.

10. Kadunce River Wayside Falls (mile 119)

9 miles northeast of Grand Marais, there’s a fun little (10-foot) waterfall that may be best seen by walking up the river in the summer. Other hikers report enjoying the path during winter, walking along the frozen river, and, of course, the more youthful or adept climb up the rockface to view it.

11. Fall River Falls (Mile 124)

Cyclists especially enjoy one of Minnesota’s legendary newly paved “Gitchi Gami Bike Trail” that passes directly in front of these Fall River Falls, 2.6 miles from Grand Marais. The views of Lake Superior definitely make it worthwhile for cyclists and hikers alike.

Devil's Kettle Waterfall, North Shore Minnesota.

12. Devil’s Kettle Of The Brule River (Mile 150.3)

Judge c.r. magney state park .

Originally thought to have no bottom, the Devil’s Kettle seems to be on a permanent simmer as the water froths and spins. The hike over the Lower Falls offers great vantage points and then it’s hiker’s choice between the path to the river flowing over the Upper Falls or the path watching the other half of the river disappear into the Devil’s Kettle. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) proved the Devil’s Kettle is an optical illusion. While the pool neither seems to fill nor show signs of water escaping, the DNR proved no water “disappears” underground.

Many people prefer to visit in summer or fall and, once again, there are more than 100 steps. Call before you go as summer closings are planned. The total distance is about 2 miles. You need a sticker to park.

High Falls on the Pigeon Rive at Grand Portage State Park

13. High Falls Of The Pigeon River (Mile 188.7)

After the Devil’s Kettle, it’s a bit of a drive to Grand Portage State Park, right on the Canadian border, where you’ll find Pigeon Falls. Just a half-mile walk from the parking lot and visitor center, you’ll discover falls, cascades, and a footbridge over the river. Pigeon Falls, at 120 feet, is the highest of all Minnesota waterfalls and the largest. Multi-faceted, these falls come down the front and along the sides, providing a plethora of observation points.

Follow the sound, you’ll find the falls. The land, leased by the state from the Chippewa Indians, must remain a state park.

Sometimes called the “Niagara of the Midwest,” you’ll catch the spray from the falls from one of the two viewing decks.

EVENT DETAILS:

Minnesota is home to many natural treasures, but at the top of that list is Lake Superior and the amazing state parks found along its shores! Each are filled with lush forests, roaring rivers, wildlife, and some of our state’s most impressive waterfalls. Join us on our beloved overnight adventure as we head north and explore nine of the biggest and best waterfalls along the North Shore of Lake Superior from Duluth to Grand Marais (and beyond!) . From exploring the diverse waterfalls and the parks they reside in to taking in the views of picturesque Lake Superior, enjoying some delicious meals and drinks to relaxing in your lakeside hotel room…this nature-lovers weekend getaway has something for everyone. Not only will you find fun and adventure, but GetKnit will plan all the details of your weekend “up north” so you can truly relax and enjoy this one-of-a-kind overnight experience.

Our weekend will begin bright and early on Saturday morning as we gather at St. Paul’s Union Depot where your local GetKnit Gurus will excitedly awaiting your arrival with donuts from A Bakers Wife and hot coffee – to start our day off right. We’ll be able to store your luggage safely below and then board our luxury coach bus that will whisk us away for our journey north to explore the waterfalls along the North Shore!  Once we’re on our way north, we’ll enjoy a savory hand pie of our choosing from The Buttered Tin !   At time of registration, you’ll be able to choose between their Ham and Pimento Cheese; Brie Cheese, Caramelized onion and Potato; or the Chorizo sausage, Cheese and Potato.

At each stop we will have time to explore the parks we’re visiting and hike to the waterfall at each location – either as a group or at your leisure. Organized hikes will be optional, as to best meet the goals of each guest. Your onsite Gurus will inform you of the length and level of intensity of each hike. Nothing will be too challenging or extreme so as to accommodate a wide range of strength levels.

Our first stop of the day will be Gooseberry Falls State Park, home to a three level waterfall that passes through a rocky gorge and is know as the “crown jewel of the north shore”. Here you’ll be able to explore the Gooseberry River as it plummets through the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls as the river makes its way to Lake Superior. After our time here, we will continue our way north to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park for a lakeside lunch in the rustic Trail Center catered in by local favorite, Sir Benedict’s Tavern on the Lake . Our lunch buffet will feature a hearty buffet of fresh salad and three homemade soups including Smoked Butternut Squash, Creamy Chicken Wild Rice, Blue Ribbon Beef Chili with a delightful sweet treat to top of our meal! After lunch we’ll have free time to explore the rocky shoreline and take in views of the historic lighthouse atop the sheer cliffs of this beautiful park.

After we’ve recharged with lunch, we will continue north to Tettegouche State Park . Before we arrive, we will make a quick pitstop at Beaver River Falls in Beaver Bay, MN. After we snap some pictures of this beautiful and accessible waterfall we will complete our trip to Tettegouche. Here we’ll have the opportunity to take a moderate .2 mile hike (roundtrip) to the cascading 40 ft. Illgen Falls on the Baptism River. After learning about the origins of where this waterfall gained its name you’ll have the choice of basking in the majesty of this lesser known waterfall within the park or taking a casual .6 mile (roundtrip) hike up river to check out “Devils Rock” before continuing our journey north.

Our journey continues to Temperance River State Park . Once we arrive at Temperance, we’ll be able to traverse the .5 (roundtrip) trail that winds along the edge of the Temperance River gorge and enjoy the rushing waterfalls surrounded by pine, spruce, cedar and birch forests. The rapidly flowing river has cut deep potholes in and along the riverbed that you’ll be able to seek out along your adventures.

We will complete the days adventures before relaxing lakeside in Grand Marais at Cascade River State Park . Here we’ll explore the rushing river and grand waterfalls that lay within a gorge, lush with moss and ferns that grow on black volcanic rocks. The .5 mile hike (roundtrip) along the gorge gives great vantage points of both the falls and Lake Superior in the nearby distance.

After we finish our days explorations, we will end up in downtown Grand Marais at Best Western Plus Superior Inn , our home away from home for the night. Here we will get checked into our newly renovated lakeside rooms and kick up our feet and relax. After some free time we’ll regroup and walk to nearby Voyageur Brewing Company . Here we’ll be invited to get comfy in their taproom filled with Northwoods charm and be welcomed with a family style appetizer spread of cheese curds and Caesar salad. For our next course (chosen at time of registration) we will enjoy a delicious dinner featuring of your choice of: Pulled Pork Sliders: three pork sliders with cabbage, BBQ sauce & garlic mayo. Served with kettle chips; Salami Flatbread: salami, fresh mozzarella, basil & tomato sauce; Thai Chicken Tacos: two flour tortillas filled with grilled chicken with ginger, garlic, Sriracha slaw & sesame seeds. Served with tortilla chips; Perch Tacos: two flour tortillas filled with lightly breaded & fried perch with cabbage, arugula, tomatoes & sweet chili sauce. Served with tortilla chips; Cheese Flatbread: tomato sauce & fresh mozzarella; Vegetarian Tacos: two flour tortillas filled with arugula, cabbage, jackfruit, diced tomato, jackfruit & sweet chili sauce. Served with tortilla chips. With dinner you’ll be able to order up a delicious craft beer from Voyageurs wide selection or a non-alcoholic beverage. After dinner, we will be treated to our final course: a house-made sweet treat and then the rest of the night is yours to do with what you will! Explore some other local hangouts and watering holes, enjoy local music at nearby Gun Flint Tavern and Brewery, take a moonlight walk along the lakefront, or just head back to the hotel for a well-deserved early night in. Your GetKnit Gurus are happy to make suggestions and join in your evening excursions!

After a good night’s rest, a scrumptious continental breakfast will be waiting in the hotel lobby upon waking. Once you fill up your belly and take in the sunrise over the big lake, we’ll re-group for our second day of “waterfall hunting” where we’ve saved the best three for last! Should you decide you’d prefer a quiet morning in town, you’re more than welcome to stay back at the hotel and meander through town at your leisure, as we’ll be returning to Grand Marais before heading back to the Cities.

A short 30 minute drive further north will bring us to Judge C.R. Magney State Park , which is home to the infamous Devils Kettle. The 1.8 mile (roundtrip) challenging hike leads from the trailhead upstream along the Brule River to the falls, where the river splits around a mass of volcanic rock. Half of the river plunges 50 feet into a pool, while the rest pours into a huge abyss. Following our time here, we’ll continue our journey along the ridged and beautiful coastline to our most northern spot just shy of Canada — Grand Portage State Park. Here we will walk through the lush forest on a paved 1 mile (roundtrip) path to enjoy several dramatic views of Pigeon Falls, Minnesota’s tallest waterfall coming in at 120 feet.

After our adventures north we will head back to Grand Marais to pick up some delicious boxed lunches featuring an array of handmade wraps. At time of registration you’ll choose from a chicken caesar, BLT, BBQ pulled pork, or Veggie – all served with kettle chips, pickle, apple and cookie. Your Gurus will get those for you and serve them to you on the bus as we start our travels south. After a quick 35 minute drive, we will make another quick pitstop at Cross River Falls for some photos of this unique fall as it makes its way into Lake Superior. Just down the road from Cross River Falls we will make our final waterfall stop of the day, for a visit to local favorite Caribou Falls which is located off the Superior Hiking Trail. Here we’ll enjoy an epic 1 mile hike (roundtrip) that takes you atop the river gorge of the Caribou River that leads to the breathtaking views of both the falls and great vantages of Lake Superior. A perfect waterfall to end our epic adventure.

We will then board our comfortable bus for the last time and finish our journey home to the Twin Cities. We’ll be home in time for dinner at approx. 6:30 PM. The memories of all of the grandeur and beauty will live on in our memories and photos — leaving us with the satisfaction that we fully embraced all our great state has to offer in this weekend getaway to northern Minnesota!

Golfweek's best 2024: top public-access golf courses in every state, ranked, share this article.

southern minnesota waterfall tour

No matter where you live or where you might be traveling, the Golfweek’s Best course rankings have you covered with the top public-access layouts in every U.S. state.

Following is our annually updated Best Courses You Can Play ranking, as judged by our nationwide network of raters. The hundreds of members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them on 10 criteria on a points basis of 1 through 10. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings are averaged to produce all our Golfweek’s Best course rankings.

  • The details: How we rank courses.

The courses on this list allow public access in some fashion, be it standard daily green fees, through a resort or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there’s a will, there’s a tee time – no membership required. (There are a handful of courses on this list that some players might consider to be traditionally private, but they do allow non-hosted, non-member guest play in some limited form, normally through a local hotel or similar arrangement.)

KEY:  (m) modern, built in 1960 or after; (c) classic, built before 1960. For courses with a number preceding the (m) or (c), that is where the course ranks on Golfweek’s Best lists for top 200 modern and classic courses in the U.S.

* indicates new or returning to the rankings

Editor’s note: The ranking for best private course in each state will be published Tuesday, June 4.
