“This heavy metal punk rock reggae sound system is about to rock ya all even more.

“You might of heard the songs but I swear our live show is some next level energy ting brov, so grab your tickets & your helicopter propels & get involved in this Dred extravaganza.

“To the older Dredites & the new let’s bring the magic like only Skindred do. The Unity Sound rings true. So you know what to do.”

Skindred previously played across the UK on a March tour, which crescendoed with a headline show at London’s Wembley Arena.

Metal Hammer journalist Matt Mills attended the concert and gave it a glowing four-star review .

“[T]his evening heralds the most vulnerable Skindred that fans have ever seen. Yet, that only strengthens the connection between the band and the capital’s masses,” wrote Mills.

“Closing crowd-pleaser Warning inspires one of the biggest and most partisan Newport helicopters in history: the latest spectacular achievement in what, over the past 12 months, has been a staggering and long-deserved rise.”

BYP Presents Skindred at The Foundry Torquay August 2023 saw UK ragga-metal legends Skindred fight a closely contested chart race for the UK Number 1 Album spot with their colossal eighth album 'Smile'. With the incredible support of the rock and metal community – including messages of support from Metallica, Rage Against The Machine and Disturbed as well as Kerrang!, NME and Metal Hammer – the band landed a career best of Number 2 in the UK Album chart, leading to a feature on BBC Breakfast. All of this followed an incredible career-defining year for Skindred – from announcing their biggest ever headline show at Wembley Arena for March 2024 and selling out multiple shows for their October 2023 headline tour months in advance, to gracing the cover of Kerrang! magazine for the first time. The band's 00s hit “Nobody” also saw an electrifying resurgence following a viral TikTok dance trend. 'Smile' attests to the enduring power of a band that delivers a good time, every time. “When I look out into the crowd, whether it’s in a small room or a festival crowd, the one thing I notice above all else is the smiles.” says Skindred's formidable frontman Benji. For him and for Skindred – completed by guitarist Mikey Demus, bassist Daniel Pugsley, and drummer Arya Goggin – it’s about enduring and it’s about legacy. “In life, it’s about hearing that our music has encouraged people and got them through dark times. But even when we’re done and gone, people will still be listening to this music. That thought makes me smile.”

Skindred are a band from Newport in Wales that endorse nu metal, and reggae rock. They have developed a reputation with their energetic live performances, and have won awards throughout their career, most notably “Best Live Band” at the 2011 UK Metal Hammer ‘Golden Gods’ awards.

Vocalist, Benji Webbe created the band Skindred with Daniel Pugsley who has remained the bass player since their formation in 1998. The band was fortunate enough to strike a deal with Lava Records and released their debut album “Babylon” in July 2002. The album made the number one spot of the US Reggae chart and number 11 in the US Heatseekers chart. The single “Pressure” made it to number 30 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in 2005, and then the single “Nobody” peaked at number 14 on the mainstream rock tracks chart.

The band’s second album “Roots Rock Riot” was released on Bieler Bros Records. It peaked at number 6 on the Heatseekers chart and impressively number 22 on the top independent albums chart. Their third studio album “Shark Bites and Dog Fights” was released on September 21st 2009, which included the song “Electric Avenue”, a cover of the hit single by Eddy Grant. The single “Stand for Something” was released on August 11th 2009. Their fourth album “Union Black” released on April 25th 2011, made it to number 8 on the UK Independent chart, marking the band’s first appearance on a UK Chart. This album was released on the major label BMG. Their album “Kill the Power” was released on January 27th 2014, and became the band’s highest charting album in the UK yet, making it to number three on the UK Metal Chart.

The band has appeared at a numerous amount of festivals over the years, having embarked on many world tours visiting an array of countries in all of the continents. It is no wonder that they have won so many awards in their time.

Live reviews

So I've been wanting to see Skindred for a good while now and had been contemplating enduring a Steel Panther gig next March to get to see this energetic, fusion band.

Then Songkick pinged up they were playing just down the road from me. So, 1st November saw me crammed into the small but perfectly formed Warehouse 23 in Wakefield with around 600 other metalheads ready to experience the Skindred live phenomenon.

Local band Inlaze opened the show with a very spirited performance. Next up were Glamour of the Kill and their extra time in the business shone through with a polished support slot with tracks from their burgeoning discography.

With the crowd nicely warmed up the time had come, would the energy of their recorded sound live up to my expectations of this band that I'd come to love and listen to repeatedly?

As we were in and around Halloween we were greeted with a Night of the Living Dred themed show - and what followed was 90 minutes of brutal riffs, rhythms, beats and viciously delivered lyrics and enough noise to raise the dead. Combine this with some of the most energetic crowd bouncing I've ever witnessed at a gig not a single person left that gig without being wet through from the energy they expended, bouncing, dancing, singing and collaborating with one of metal's most unique experiences.

Running through some of the many highlights of their recent catalogue we were treated to Pressure, Kill the Power, Ninja, Nobody, Union Black and many many more of their unique blend of reggae, beats and metal.

Holding it all together is the man mountain, Benji Webbe, whose confrontational egging on of the crowd achieved the desired response. Simply refusing to accept any participation that didn't meet his standards he worked the seething sweaty thronged masses into a frenzy, building throughout the show to the highs of Kill the Power and Nobody.

A unique, sweaty, breathless show of power, determination, entertainment Skindred are a phenomena in metal. You should definitely try to catch them in sub-1000 capacity venue. That intimacy only serves to enhance the brutality and viscerality of the experience.

A total recommendation to have Skindred on your gig bucket list!

A Skindred show was one of the first gigs I ever went to as a kid (at least without my parents) when growing up in Exeter. I caught them not long after Welsh frontman Benji Webbe had formed the ‘ragga metal’ outfit – following the demise of his first cult band, Dub War – at The Phoenix in Exeter. They were damn incredible in the flesh, especially considering this was sometime before the release of their first album. Around the release of that debut, Babylon, I saw them a bunch of times (their own gigs, festivals and supporting slots, including Soulfly in London). For years they remained a painfully underappreciated live metal band; surely Webbe is one of the greatest UK frontmen of the 21st century! He has such a unique presence and vocal range, prowling and barging around the stage while he switches between melodic singing, reggae rapping and guttural growling. No matter where they are playing or what time their set is, Webbe always manages to evoke moshing and mass sing-a-longs.

I most recently saw them in Belgium at Dour Festival and they were one of the weekend’s highlight. The nu metal-tinted riffs of ‘Warning’ and ‘Nobody’ had people bouncing, while the dancey metalcore drumming of fellow Exonian Arya would’ve made the Enter Shikari drummer weak at the knees. But, of course, it was Benji who was the focal point – as is now customary at Skindred gigs, Benji got the whole crowd to whip an item of clothing around their heads during the memorable ‘Newport Helicopter’ mosh. Exhilarating.

Skindred are incredible live: they are one of the most energetic and powerful bands that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing live. The Welsh band are a heavy combination of nu metal and reggae rock and have won countless awards, most notably for their style of performance which are always incredibly high energy. Skindred put on one hell of a show. They combine head thrashing guitar riffs with powerful lyrics and violent beats to really energise and pump the crowd, keeping up this energy all night with their heavy style. One of the best things about the band is the way they blend different genres, experimenting with rock and reggae in conjunction with metal. The whole crowd was dripping in sweat by the end of the night from dancing, dancing that reached dizzying new heights when power tracks ‘Nobody’ and ‘Kill the Power’ were played. Skindred also performed hits such as ‘Pressure’ and ‘Union Black’, both of which drove the crowd wild. The entire night was a huge success.

Amazing gig. We were latenin getting to the venue so missed one band but was still definitely one of my favorite gigs so far. Hed PE, followed by Crossfaith then Skindred. I loved how at least one or two lead singers of each band came out into another bands set. Hed PE were a new band to me but definitely a band to see live. Amazing. But Skindred were brilliant as always, no comparison. Definitely a band to see at least once in your lifetime.

I've seen Skindred live a few times, at festivals and small venues all the way to Wembley and they never disappoint. It's a high energy show and Benji always goes that extra mile. Even if you're not a huge fan, this a band that needs to be seen

The gig was amazing as ever! Second time this year I saw them and again, was brilliant! Would definitely go see them again in a heart beat!! Venue was great and wasn't too hot either (which was a bonus!)

Super concert and great combination of metal with reggae to create a funky groove. Singer Benji Webbe was quite charismatic and a flashy showman sporting several different pairs of sunglasses!

Amazing every time although they deserved better staging at this venue! Good set list of most of the big songs! Shame the venue took forever letting people in so my friends were late.

Absolutely fantastic! I love Skindred so much! Benji has a way with the crowd that I've never seen with another band. Touching yet crazy I would love to see them again very soon.

Newport Helicopter – Black Tee £25

Logo point – black hooded top £40, loud music – black tee £20, true newportian ragga metal – black tee £25, logo – embroidered sweatband £5, big tings cat – a2 litho poster £5, the music world may be in a permanent state of panic and flux, but one basic principle of rock’n’roll remains true: the key to longevity is to always deliver the goods. no band has better encapsulated this ethos of integrity and determination over the last decade than skindred..

Widely acknowledged as one of the most devastating and enthralling live bands on the planet, the Newport destroyers have been a perennial force for musical invention and remorseless positivity since emerging from the ashes of frontman Benji Webbe’s former band Dub War back in 1998. Over the course of four universally praised studio albums – Babylon (2002), Roots Rock Riot (2007), Shark Bites And Dog Fights (2009) and Union Black (2011) – Skindred’s reputation for producing the ultimate spark-spraying state-of-the-art soundclash, combining all manner of seemingly disparate musical elements into an irresistibly exhilarating explosion of energy and cross-pollinated cultural fervour has rightly earned them a reputation as a band capable of uniting people from all corners of the globe and making every last one of them tear up the dancefloor with a giant shit-eating grin plastered across their faces.

With the toughest and most infectious metal riffs colliding with the biggest, phattest hip hop and reggae grooves, cutting edge electronics and a razor-sharp pop sensibility guaranteed to encourage even the most curmudgeonly music fans bellow along with rabid enthusiasm, Skindred are both the ultimate thinking man’s party band. And now, with the release of their fifth studio album Kill The Power, Benji Webbe and his loyal henchmen – bassist Dan Pugsley, guitarist Mikey Demus and drummer Arya Goggin – are poised to spread their gospel of good times and badass tunes to an even bigger global audience.

“We know that everyone recognises us as one of the best live bands around,” says Arya. “We’re really proud of all of the albums we’ve made, but we all felt that we needed to make an album that would be as powerful and effective as the live show. That’s what Kill The Power is all about. This time, we want everyone to sit up and listen and join in the party.”

“I started DJ-ing a little while ago and it’s taught me a lot,” adds Benji. “Now I feel like I wanted to make an album where every intro to every song makes kids think ‘Fucking hell, they’re playing that song!’ Every middle eight on this album is a banger. Every chorus is massive. On this album, the lyrics are deep and the songs are just bigger than ever.”

In keeping with their tradition of making people move while singing about universal issues and spreading a message of positive action and social unity, Kill The Power is an album bulging with fury at the state of the modern world. Never afraid to tackle important topics head on, while never forgetting his band’s mission to entertain and leave the world in a sweaty, sated heap, Benji’s notoriously insane energy levels seem to be creeping up with every album and Kill The Power showcases his most furious and impactful performances to date.

“The world’s getting worse so how can I get more mellow?” he laughs. “Of course I’m getting angrier! People normally stay in a bag when it comes to lyrics. Stephen King stays with horror and he’s brilliant at it, you know? With Skindred, it’s always about encouraging an uplift. It’s about a sense of unity. Lyrics can change people’s lives, you know? You can be going down one road and hear a song and have a Road To Damascus experience and become someone else.”

On an album that has no shortage of invigorating highlights, Kill The Power takes Skindred to new extremes at both ends of the lyrical spectrum, reaching a new level of fiery intensity on the lethal cautionary tale of “Playin’ With The Devil” and the euphoric end-of-the-working-week celebration of “Saturday”: both songs proving that this band’s ability to touch the heart and fire the blood remains as incisive and potent as ever. As if to enhance their songwriting chops more than ever, Kill The Power also features several songs written in collaboration with legendary songwriting guru Russ Ballard, the man behind such immortal rock staples as Since You’ve Been Gone and God Gave Rock & Roll To You, and this seemingly perverse team-up has led to Skindred’s finest set of lyrics and melodies to date.

“Basically, I try to write songs that people can interpret however they like,” says Benji. “When I wrote ‘Playin’ With The Devil’, I originally wrote some words down on a piece of paper thinking about friends I’ve had who smoke crack and live on the pipe, you know? I wrote the song about that kind of thing, but then a couple of days later the riots happened in London and so it became about that as well. When you shit on your own doorstep, your house is going to smell of shit. You’ve got to clean that up! With ‘Saturday’, it’s not a typical Skindred song; it’s a big celebration. We got Russ Ballard involved on that one and he helped me structure the lyrics in the right way so when the chorus hits, it hits like a hammer. It’s an upbeat song but when you listen to the lyrics it goes on about how people all have different reasons to be out and partying. Some people are celebrating, some people are drowning their sorrows, and we all come together on a Saturday. When this record comes out and people go to a club on a Saturday, that’s when it’s gonna go off! The chorus is huge!”

While Skindred’s previous album Union Black was dominated by the bleeps, booms and squelches of British electronic dance music, albeit balanced out by Mikey Demus’ trademark riffs, the new album sees the band return to a more organic sound that amounts to the most accurate representation of the Skindred live experience yet committed to tape. From the huge beats and stuttering samples of the opening title track and the laudably demented Ninja through to the insistent melodies and rampaging choruses of “The Kids Are Right Now” and “Saturday” and on to the thunderous, metallic throwdowns of “Proceed With Caution” and “Ruling Force” and the cool acoustic breeze of the closing More Fire, Kill The Power is Skindred cranked up to full throttle and revelling in their own febrile creativity like never before.

“It’s all about making an album that moves people in the same way that our live shows do,” says Arya. “We love what we achieved on Union Black and we still used a lot of those basic ideas on Kill The Power, but this time it’s a more organic sound. All the drum loops you hear were originally played by me before we started chopping them up, and there are a lot more guitars on this record too. We love combining all the music that we love in Skindred but we all love heavy music and we’re a rock band at heart and that really comes across this time.”

“We’ve delivered an album that’s gonna make people rock for the next few years,” states Benji. “You know what? I can’t do anything about record sales, but if people come to a Skindred show they’re gonna know they’ve been there, you know? Ha ha! The music we make is not about Christians or Muslims, straight people or gay people, black or white or any of that shit. When people are in that room together it’s just Skindred, one unity and one strength!”

Having conquered numerous countries around the world, Skindred could easily be taking a breather and resting on their laurels at this point. Instead, this most dedicated and hard-working of modern bands are preparing to launch their most exuberant assault on the world ever when Kill The Power hits the streets. Anyone that has ever seen the band live before will confirm that it is impossible not to get fired up and drawn into the joyous abandon of a Skindred show and with their greatest album to date primed and ready to explode, the best live band on the planet simply cannot fail to conquer the entire world this time round. Wherever and whoever you are, Skindred are coming. Open your ears and get your dancing feet ready…

“There’s nothing better than being on stage with these guys,” says Arya. “Skindred is my favourite band and I’m so lucky to be part of this thing we’ve created. We’ve been all over the world but there are always new places to visit and new crowds to play for. We just want to keep getting bigger and better.”

“We’re a global band. We’ve played in Colombia and India and everywhere and it’s the same energy,” Benji concludes. “I get letters from people in Hawaii and people in Turkey. It’s all the same. We resonate globally and it’s the greatest thing ever. It seems funny to us sometimes because we’re always kicking each other’s heads in and saying ‘You’re a wanker!’ to each other before we go on stage, but as soon as it’s time to play the show the oneness this band creates together and the unity we bring is unique. I’ve never experienced anything like it and we can’t wait to get back on the road and do it all again.”
