I’m super excited about this new set of preschool tools.  I enjoy illustrating animals and I’ve created a set of “Safari Games” bundle that includes:

• A lesson on Safari Animals – facts taken from Wickepedia
• Coloring sheets on Safari Animals with an emphasis on the alphabet letter for each animal – great for our study of the alphabet, and
• Safari Games – an easy, free game to keep your preschooler entertained – they roll they dice and then act out the animal activity – great for reinforcing what they learned in their animal lesson.  If you don’t have dice, you can draw straws or strips of paper numbered one through six.

9-month-old baby fighting for his life after mom’s boyfriend gave the child a ‘bear hug,’ deputies say

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. ( KY3 /Gray News) - A 9-month-old baby in Missouri is in critical condition after the mother’s boyfriend said he gave the child a “bear hug,” according to authorities.

On September 14, Waylon woke up a healthy baby. However, just a day later, he found himself in the hospital with critical injuries.

”He is not able to speak. So we will speak for him,” said the Waylon’s cousin, Jaden Branham.

Investigators said Waylon’s mom placed him in a baby jumper before going to use the bathroom, KY3 reported.

That’s when Waylon threw up and began to cry.

Deputies said 28-year-old Jordan Boggess then picked the child up and tossed him into the air, missing the baby on the second toss.

The 28-year-old allegedly admitted to investigators that he then bear-hugged the baby until he stopped screaming.

“As a mom, if my child is throwing up, I’m not going to pick him up and toss him up in the air thinking that’s going to help out in any scenario,” said Branham.

Boggess told authorities that his hands were “sweaty,” causing him to drop the child. However, doctors told investigators the 9-month-old suffers from “abusive head trauma.”

“They said baby Waylon will not be the same baby. If he makes it, he’ll be wheelchair-bound. He will not be able to talk. He will not be able to feed himself,” said the infant’s grandmother, Christa Newman.

The child’s grandfather added that he felt heartbroken.

“It’s hard. I’m lost for words. As parents, our job is to protect our children and be there. This is the hardest fight that I’ve ever, I’ve ever had to do,” said Tyler Burbridge.

Investigators accuse Jordan Boggess, the mother’s boyfriend, of child abuse.

He was arrested and is being held without bail.

The United States Coast Guard has rescued a man and his dog as Hurricane Helene fast approached them when his boat became disabled and started taking on water 25 miles out to sea, officials said.

The sailor and his dog were on a 36-foot sailboat on Thursday when the boat started taking on water, leaving the man and his canine stranded in the ocean approximately 25 miles off of Sanibel Island with no help or support nearby, according to a statement from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater released early Friday morning.

“Coast Guard crews responded to the boater’s distress call and rushed to the man’s location, approximately 25 miles offshore from Sanibel Island near Fort Myers,” authorities said. “A successful rescue attempt was made and the unidentified sailor and his dog were saved and brought back to land.”

Officials have not disclosed why the man was out to sea while small craft advisories and hurricane warnings had already been issued in the area as Hurricane Helene was expected to make landfall.

Hurricane Helene has officially made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida as a major Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds late Thursday night, with the storm touching down near Perry, Florida, just east of the mouth of the Aucilla River.

Hurricane Helene marks the first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Florida's Big Bend Region since at least 1859.

Just after Hurricane Helene made landfall over Florida, the number of customers without power crossed the 1 million mark and outages have extended into neighboring Southern states with over 46,000 customers without power in Georgia and over 12,400 customers without power in North Carolina, according to powerouttages.us.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp confirmed that two people were killed during Hurricane Helene's passage into Georgia overnight, bringing the storm's total death toll to three.

Kemp said he and his family were "saddened to learn of the loss of two lives in Wheeler County this evening. As we join their families in mourning their deaths, we urge all Georgians to brace for further impact from Helene, remain vigilant and pray for all those affected."

Earlier, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a press conference late Thursday that one person was killed on the I-4 highway near Tampa when a sign fell on a car.

Beatlesfest helps rebrand Lithgow as regional towns embrace quirky tourism strategy

Lithgow is the latest regional town to launch a festival celebrating popular musicians who have nothing to do with their geographic location. 

The Beatlesfest organisers want to re-energise the local community.

What's next? 

The three-day festival kicks off this weekend.

Katie Sanderson identifies as a crazy fan of the Beatles.

Not only has she has travelled hundreds of kilometres and spent thousands of dollars to see Paul McCartney play live, she even named her son McCartney in honour of the legendary musician.

So last year, when the Bathurst local saw a billboard for a brand new festival celebrating the Beatles, she had to attend.

Luckily for Katie and five-year-old "Little Macca", the festival was close to home — in Lithgow, Central West New South Wales.

"We went, 'Oh my god, how do we get involved with this?'. We contacted the organisers and got to be a part of it and enjoy it," Ms Sanderson said.

The pair will be among 3,000 people flocking to Beatlesfest this weekend, in what is the latest example of an effective tourism strategy for regional towns: putting on an offbeat, quirky, family-friendly festival to create a unique local identity.

Bringing Beatlemania back

While it has been 60 years since the Beatles' Australian tour, Lithgow was not a destination the Fab Four visited.

Organisers Wade Jackson and Johnathan Sequeira moved to Lithgow in the last three years. 

They found a town that was transitioning from an industrial, energy-producing past to an unclear future.

"We really wanted to do something for the town. Lithgow's this wonderful hidden gem that people don't realise is here," Mr Sequeria said.

The choice to celebrate the Beatles was as much out of fandom as it is strategic.

"It's music that is timeless already and it's going to last forever," he said.

Visitors will be treated to free events involving lookalikes, live bands, kids discos, Beatles bingo and karaoke.

"They're a cultural phenomenon," Mr Sequeria said.

Putting country towns on the map

The organisers are hoping to replicate the success of Trundle's ABBA festival or Parkes's Elvis Festival – two regional celebrations of artists who have nothing to do with those geographic locations. 

The Parkes Elvis Festival is a notable success, having run for over 30 years and drawing $15 million to the area annually.

University of Technology Sydney adjunct fellow and tourism expert David Beirman said these regional festivals had multigenerational appeal and were a great way to get noticed.

"A lot of those musical groups appeal to generations who have discretionary spending money, so it's not a complete accident," Dr Beirman said.

"If you look at a country area, sure you can have a lamb festival or something related to what is actually produced there, or you can have something which is way off the scale that attracts international interest.

"I don't think Elvis probably had even heard of Parkes while he was alive."

Baby, you can drive my car … to Lithgow

The local community has rallied around the event to rebrand the identity of Lithgow and give the town a much-needed tourism boost.

At last year's event, all hotels were booked out.

"Everyone that comes, they stay a night or two nights. They eat out, they go to cafes and the fact that there's something to do in town is an extra drawcard," said local hotelier Tom Evangelidis.

For superfans like Katie Sanderson and her son, Beatlesfest has shown them another side to the dusty city.

"Usually, if we're coming going from Bathurst to Sydney, you don't really stop," Ms Sanderson said.

"But now you get to come into the town, check out the local shops and meet all the lovely local people here."
