How to get WhatsApp on iPad

Lewis Painter

WhatsApp is an incredibly popular iPhone app, connecting more than a billion active members around the world every day. It lets you send messages to friends, or groups of friends, over Wi-Fi or 4G/5G and make savings on your phone bill. (Of course, you may end up paying for data if you go over your limit, so don’t go crazy!)

Unfortunately, right now WhatsApp is only available for iPhone–there isn’t a version of the app for the iPad despite the fact that WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart (in January 2022) acknowledged in an interview that people had been asking for an iPad app for a long time . Cathcart revealed that much of the infrastructure to develop an iPad app is already in place, but he made no immediate promises.

Things could be about to change though. In September 2023 a WhatsApp beta (version 23.19.1.71) seems to include an iPad-compatible beta version!

WhatsApp beta for iPad is available on TestFlight and can be installed on the iPad if you are part of WhatsApp beta testing program. If you want to install the WhatsApp for iPad beta read this .

If you aren’t part of the WhatsApp beta, don’t despair. In this tutorial, we show you how to use WhatsApp on the iPad using WhatsApp Web. This service connects to the WhatsApp account on your iPhone (or Android device) and forwards the messages on to your iPad, allowing you to send and receive messages, pictures and videos. It’s not quite native WhatsApp on the iPad, but it’s the next best thing.

WhatsApp for iPad release date

While right now there is no WhatsApp app on the iPad, but it does look like there is one coming soon. As of September 2023, WhatsApp beta testers can try out a WhatsApp for iPad beta.

Over the years there have been many indications that WhatsApp would eventually come to iPad, including Will Cathcart’s revelation above that people have been asking for one, but this beta looks like the most promising evidence yet.

Back in August 2021 there were reports that the team at Meta/Facebook-owned WhatsApp was working on a WhatsApp for iPad app. That news came via WABetaInfo, the Twitter (now X) feed for Whatsapp beta news:

• Is WhatsApp for iPad a web app? No, it's a native app! • Will WhatsApp for iPad work independently? Yes. • Is WhatsApp for iPad already available? No. • WhatsApp beta for iPad? If you have WhatsApp beta for iOS, you will automatically have the iPad version in the future. https://t.co/aQYBBtW7Sb — WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) August 21, 2021

There is also a WhatsApp Desktop version. See: How to get WhatsApp on Mac for more information about that.

How to get WhatsApp on iPad using WhatsApp Web

Whatsapp for iPad

While there is not a WhatsApp app for iPad yet, there are ways to get your WhatsApp on your Apple tablet.

Follow these steps to get WhatsApp on an iPad:

  • Open Safari on your iPad and head to web.whatsapp.com .
  • Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  • In Whatsapp tap on Settings.
  • Tap on Linked Devices.
  • Tap Link a Device.
  • Use your iPhone to scan the QR code and pair with your iPhone.
  • A web page should now load and display all your recent WhatsApp messages, along with any media or voice notes.

Be aware that there are a few limitations when using WhatsApp this way. Most importantly, unlike when the service is used on a Mac or PC, notifications from web browsers aren’t supported on iOS/iPadOS. You won’t be notified of new messages.

Apart from that and a few small bugs, however, the service is pretty easy to use and a great alternative for WhatsApp users keen to access the service on iPad.

WhatsApp Web is a free and easy way to access the WhatsApp service on your iPad. Although you won’t get notifications (as you would when using the service on Mac or PC), it’s a great way to easily access your messages on a tablet.

Safari is an integral element of iOS/iPadOS - and cannot be updated independently of the OS.

If your iPad has been updated to the most recent version supported by your iPad, then Safari is as up-to-date as is possible.

However, some websites may incorrectly identify your iOS/iPadOS Safari User Agent when used in one or other of its browsing modes - of which their are two - these being  Desktop  and  Mobile . It’s easy to switch between modes if a website isn’t functioning correctly. From the desired web-page, touch the  aA  icon at the left of the Address Bar; this will reveal a menu. From the menu select  Website Settings , then select (or deselect)  Request Desktop Website , then tap  Done . Now refresh the webpage.

The chosen setting will be saved for the selected website - and can be simply reversed if needed.

Hello! I had the same issue today… I tried to use Firefox browser app and still works.

Feel free to check it, today Firefox saved my life :)

I hope someone can fix safari again but for now we have the solution to this.

It does not work, at all, nor mobile nor desktop. Whastapp web is gone in iOS 15.7.

Using an alternate web app client works, as Clone App. It asks to read the usual QR code. It works smoothly, even I feel it a bit slow.

Apparently, now WhatsApp web doesn't work on tablet browsers. I reached out both WhatsApp and apple support for this issue. And apple asked to re install the update and i did but that didn't help. Then whatsapp gave an explanation to the problem, that whatsapp web now isn't supported on Mobile browsers and tablets browsers. 😡

This was great, thanks!!

I was able to login with no issues. I set firefox as my default browser and was able to scan the QR code. No issues now, though it sucks that you can’t use safari for WhatsApp.

I was able to solve this problem by turning off the “Request Desktop Website” for all websites in Safari setting in Settings app. Once I turned off this setting, everything started working as it used to before I updated my iPad to iOS 15.7. Firefox worked too, but I didn’t want yet another web browser app on my iPad. I am comfortable with Safari.

Sep 29, 2022 9:29 PM in response to kinawaaa

I was able to solve this by turning off the “Request Desktop Website” on the WhatsApp tab. Just head to the address bar, click on the “aA” button on the left, then click on “Website Settings”.
From there, turn off “Request Dekstop Website”. Refresh and, voila, now it’s working flawlessly again! 😊

How to use WhatsApp on iPad (2024)

Darryl

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging services. It allows you to send messages, make or receive voice or video calls, complete payments, etc. Regardless of the size of WhatsApp’s user base, the application is not available for iPad users. However, you can still get WhatsApp on your iPad through WhatsApp Web.

Additionally, you can even create and add a WhatsApp Web shortcut to your iPad’s Home Screen for easy access. Read along to learn how to use WhatsApp on iPad.

What is WhatsApp Web?

Even though WhatsApp does not have a native application for the iPad, you can get WhatsApp on your iPad through WhatsApp Web. For those unaware, WhatsApp Web is a browser-based solution that allows you to access your WhatsApp account on any web browser.

Apart from your primary phone (iPhone or Android), you can link your WhatsApp account with up to four devices through WhatsApp Web. Initially, you will need your primary device to link your account with other devices. Once the process is completed, you can access your WhatsApp account through linked devices even when your primary device does not have an internet connection. You can send and receive messages, upload and download media , and a lot more.

How to get WhatsApp on iPad using Whatsapp Web

  • Open Safari on your iPad → head to web.whatsapp.com
  • Now, open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  • Tap Settings at the bottom right corner.

Tap on Settings, Linked Devices, Link a Device in WhatsApp

  • Authenticate yourself using Face ID, Touch ID, or Password.
  • Now, your primary device will open the Scan QR Code page.

Scan QR Code displayed on your iPad screen

  • WhatsApp Web will download all your messages, and once the loading bar is completed, you’ve successfully set up WhatsApp Web on your iPad.

After you’ve linked your WhatsApp account with your iPad, you can access the service whenever you want just by heading to the WhatsApp Web page on Safari. Also, you can access your WhatsApp account, read and send messages, etc., through WhatsApp Web even when your primary device is not connected to the internet. Also, WhatsApp Web has a few limitations, which we will discuss in detail later.

Add WhatsApp Web to iPad Home Screen

To shorten the process of accessing your WhatsApp, we recommend adding a WhatsApp Web shortcut to your iPad’s Home Screen.

  • Open Safari on your iPad.
  • Head to WhatsApp Web .

Tap the Share icon on iPad

A shortcut with the WhatsApp icon will be added to your iPad’s Home Screen. You can access WhatsApp Web directly with this shortcut.

What are the limitations of using WhatsApp Web?

WhatsApp Web does not offer the same features available on the native WhatsApp app available for iOS and Android. Listed below are all the limitations of using WhatsApp Web.

  • WhatsApp Web will not notify you about any new messages.
  • When you access WhatsApp Web on your iPad, it will display your primary device’s contacts (iPhone or Android) and not the contacts present on your iPad. We have a guide to help you send WhatsApp messages to users not added to your contacts .
  • You cannot make or receive voice or video calls through WhatsApp Web.
  • While you can view Status Updates by others in your contact list, you cannot add a Status Update through WhatsApp Web.
  • Last but not least, the biggest limitation of WhatsApp Web is that you need to have an existing WhatsApp account to use the service. So, if you were planning to get a cellular iPad just to use WhatsApp, please drop those plans.

Despite these drawbacks, you need not worry about privacy, as all the messages imported from your WhatsApp account to WhatsApp Web are end-to-end encrypted.

Back in August 2021, there were several rumors about WhatsApp testing a beta version of WhatsApp for iPad. Considering we are already in 2024, it is possible that Meta will release a native WhatsApp app for the iPad.

Yes, you can use WhatsApp Web on your iPad even when your iPhone is not connected to the internet.

Enjoy WhatsApp on your iPad!

Meta – the parent company of WhatsApp – also owns Instagram and has not launched a native iPad app for the same. So, it looks like Meta is ignoring developing apps for iPadOS, which we hope will change in the near future. Nonetheless, we hope this article helps you set up and use WhatsApp on your iPad.

Even with all its limitations, having the option to use WhatsApp on iPad is excellent, especially when you do not need your primary device to be connected to the internet.

WhatsApp is a popular messaging app that sends encrypted messages. It also allows users to make international or domestic calls over the internet, and create large messaging groups.

WhatsApp — which is owned by Facebook — has not created a version for the iPad . You can easily connect to WhatsApp on your iPad through a web browser and your iPhone, but there are some limitations.

You'll need to have your iPhone connected to the internet to use WhatsApp on your iPad , and you'll only be able to send messages (not voice or video calls) from the browser version.

Here's how to set up WhatsApp on an iPad .

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Iphone 11 (from $699.99 at best buy), ipad (from $329.99 at best buy), how to use whatsapp on your ipad.

1. Go to web.whatsapp.com . The WhatsApp web interface will appear.

2. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone. Tap Settings at the bottom right of your screen to bring up the Settings menu. Tap WhatsApp Web/Desktop.

3. Move your phone in front of your iPad to scan the QR code on the iPad screen. If the QR scan screen doesn't come up automatically, tap Scan QR code.
