Profiles & Route Renewi Tour 2023

Profile. With five stages in length, the Renewi Tour from the 23rd to 27th of August has been shortened but is back in the peloton, the World Tour peloton will tackle the roads of the Benelux where the sprinters, classics specialists and time-trialists will be in the spotlight.

The race features a small individual time-trial which will be key to the overall classification as well as two hilly stages which are well suited to the classics specialists - one with cobbled, the other tarmacked ascents. Stages 1 and 4 should be certain bunch sprints as they lack the difficulties.

PREVIEW | Renewi Tour 2023 - 5-day race a test for sprinters, classics riders and time-trialists

Profiles & Route Renewi Tour 2023

The opening stage of the race will be fully within Belgium and is a rather simple day. It is 182 kilometers in length and is pan-flat, a day that will attribute the first leader's jersey. Wind will be a factor in the day as the riders won't be far from the sea and will be riding through vast plains.

The finale will not be technical. The speeds will be very high, there will be a tense moment in a chicane that takes place with 1.3 kilometers to go, from there on a little windy finale but pan-flat and fully clear final 500 meters.

PREVIEW | Renewi Tour 2023 stage 1 - Philipsen, Groenewegen, Merlier and Kooij among world-class sprinter field for opening stage

Profiles & Route Renewi Tour 2023

A key day for the overall classification. Stage 2 of the Renewi Tour is only 13.6 kilometers long however it is an individual time-trial, fully pan-flat within Sluis. There is not too much to mention over this day, technically speaking it's not the simplest of time-trials, it features in it's middle a few possibly complicated corners when riders are taking risks to fight for every single second.

PREVIEW | Renewi Tour 2023 stage 2 - Joshua Tarling main candidate to win key time-trial

Profiles & Route Renewi Tour 2023

A very explosive hilly stage and one which will be very exciting. Stage 3 of the Benelux race will see the riders in pure Flandrien roads and they will be tackling several of the most famous cobbled climbs, race the traditional circuit of the race and end in Geraardsbergen. The first 75 kilometers of the day are mostly flat and with not much to report, but from there on it's an almost constant roller-coaster of a ride.

Then the riders will take a circuit with three climbs in quick succession which will be ridden two times. First the Donderoodstraat (600 meters at 7.5%), then the Mur de Geraardsbergen (1.2Km; 7.3%) and finally the Bosberg (700 meters at 6%). Each have very difficult gradients, the Mur specially goes towards the 20% and is the most difficult of the ascents.

Towards the end the riders will climb the first two once again towards the finish line. The Donderoodstraat finishes with just 5.5 kilometers to go and then the finale will be in the town of Geraardsbergen, in the middle of the ascent, the ramp will be the climb's first 600 meters which average 6.5% in the cobbles.

PREVIEW | Renewi Tour 2023 stage 3 - Queen stage sees multiple ascents of Mur de Geraardsbergen and Bosberg

Profiles & Route Renewi Tour 2023

The fourth day of racing is once again a simple one, pan-flat and with a final circuit finishing in Peer. It is a day for the sprinters, they will be happy with the terrain in display.

The sprint will be in non-urban roads but not overly simple. It's an average finale in terms of difficulty, there will be a fast left-hander with 2.3 kilometers to go, and then the final turn with 800 meters to go into the finish line. There are no gradients to throw in variables.

PREVIEW | Renewi Tour 2023 stage 4 - Philipsen within a shot of two-for-two in bunch sprints

Profiles & Route Renewi Tour 2023

The final day of racing will be an interesting one. It features no big climbs but the explosive terrain can see attacks. Right from the start there will be plenty small ascents all within the area close to Bilzen where the stage will finish.

Towards the end there will be two hilltops where attacks are expected. There is a 1-kilometer ascent at 5% which ends with 17 kilometers to go, and then a 400-meter climb which ends only 4 kilometers away from the finish and ramps up at 6.5%.

This will one way or another influence the finale, perhaps a little too hard for the pure sprinters, and suited to the late attacks as the run-up to the line is quite technical. All the way into the final 900 meters the riders find a small descent and then technical twisty roads where it will be difficult to once again organize a chase. The final straight is flat and allows for recovery, but it will be difficult to balance things out.

PREVIEW | Renewi Tour 2023 stage 5 - Explosive stage can turn GC on it's head, but also a chance for the sprinters

Jonas Vingegaard and doping accusations; feud at INEOS between Tom Pidcock and Carlos Rodríguez - New details emerge over 2023 Tour de France Netflix series

Renewi Tour 2023: Het complete parcours

Tour of britain women 2024 - analysing the contenders.

The riders to watch in the hilly four-day Women's WorldTour event, from the world champion to the rising stars

Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm firmenich-Post NL), Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) and Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek)

British Cycling and Lloyds Bank have taken over the Tour of Britain Women , formerly called the Women's Tour, for its ninth edition, which will start on June 6 in Welshpool and finish on June 9 in Manchester.

There was some concern that the race might not happen again this year after SweetSpot, the former organisers, entered liquidation after financial difficulties. The event, which held its inaugural edition in 2014, was already cancelled twice in 2020 and last year, and another cancellation would have marked a serious loss for women's racing in Great Britain.

However, the event remains part of the Women's WorldTour , and despite the initial uncertainty and being reduced to four days, still promises to offer the peloton and fans alike action-packed racing across four hilly, puncheur-style stages before the overall winner is crowned in Manchester.

There are currently 88 riders set to start the Tour of Britain Women, and although the field size is smaller than some of the other events that are part of the top-tier racing series, a number of riders stand out as potential contenders for the overall classification.

Cyclingnews highlights the riders to watch for the 2024 Tour of Britain Women.

Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx-Protime)

There is no shortage of potential stage winners and overall contenders that will line up as part of the SD Worx-Protime squad. World Champion Lotte Kopecky will be the out-right favourite for both endeavours.

After taking a break to recover following the Spring Classics, Kopecky recently returned to competition in support of her teammate Lorena Wiebes at the RideLondon Classique.

The unbeatable duo did not disappoint, with Koepcky offering her services as a lead-out extraordinaire for Wiebes, who won all three stages and the overall classification.

The pair could swap roles for the Tour of Britain Women's punchier four-day parcour, where the hilly terrain and two categorised mountains on each stage could favour Kopecky's skillset.

Of course, the team also includes Chantal van den Broek-Blaak , Elena Cecchini and Christine Majerus, who are likely to be in support roles, along with sprint lead-out Barbara Guarischi, for a well-rounded team.

Lizzie Deignan (Team Great Britain)

SAFFRON WALDEN ENGLAND MAY 24 Lizzie Deignan of The United Kingdom and Team LidlTrek prior to the 10th Ford RideLondon Classique 2024 Stage 1 a 1592km stage from Saffron Walden to Colchester UCIWWT on May 24 2024 in Saffron Walden England Photo by Alex BroadwayGetty Images

Lidl-Trek is not registered to participate in the Tour of Britain Women, but the event has always been an important one for home-favourite Lizzie Deignan.

The former World Champion has won the overall classification on two occasions, in 2026 and 2019, while her trade teammate Elisa Longo Borghini won the last edition, held in 2022, by just one second ahead of rival Grace Brown.

Deignan started this season determined to turn the tide after a winless 2023, and while she had a strong start to her spring campaign, it came to an abrupt halt after a crash in the first ten kilometres of the Tour of Flanders. X-rays showed Deignan suffered a fracture to the radial head of her right arm and she was forced to take a month away from racing.

She has slowly re-built her form having raced in support roles at La Vuelta Femenina and RideLondon Classique, and looks to be ready to lead Team Great Britain for their next home event.

It is a strong squad, too, with Olympic gold medallist and seven-time track world champion Elinor Barker, Elynor Bäckstedt, Anna Henderson, Millie Couzens, and Flora Perkins.

Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich PostNL)

Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL's British rider Pfeiffer Georgi celebrates on the podium after placing third in the fourth edition of the women's Paris-Roubaix one-day classic cycling race, 148,5km between Denain and Roubaix, on April 6, 2024. (Photo by Francois LO PRESTI / AFP) / “The erroneous mention[s] appearing in the metadata of this photo by Francois LO PRESTI has been modified in AFP systems in the following manner: [placing third] instead of [placing second]. Please immediately remove the erroneous mention[s] from all your online services and delete it (them) from your servers. If you have been authorized by AFP to distribute it (them) to third parties, please ensure that the same actions are carried out by them. Failure to promptly comply with these instructions will entail liability on your part for any continued or post notification usage. Therefore we thank you very much for all your attention and prompt action. We are sorry for the inconvenience this notification may cause and remain at your disposal for any further information you may require.”

Team dsm-firmenich PostNL also arrives with a powerful line-up that includes climber Abi Smith, time trialist Daniek Hengeveld, and sprint specialist Charlotte Kool, with her trusted lead-out team of Franziska Koch and Rachele Barbieri.

For the overall classification, however, we've chosen British national champion Pfeiffer Georgi because of her all-around ability across puncheur-style terrain and in both breakaways and reduced-group sprints.

She has had a strong spring campaign, and while lacking a victory, finished third at Omloop van het Hageland, fifth at Trofeo Alfredo Binda, third at Paris-Roubaix and fourth at Amstel Gold Race.

Her highest place in this event was eighth overall in the 2021 edition, but this year's route could present a perfect opportunity for Georgi to secure a podium spot in the GC.

Henrietta Christie (Human Powered Health)

HUY BELGIUM APRIL 17 Henrietta Christie of New Zealand and Team Human Powered Health prior to the 27th La Fleche Wallonne Feminine 2024 a 146km one day race from Huy to Huy UCIWWT on April 17 2024 in Huy Belgium Photo by Luc ClaessenGetty Images

A smaller field could offer more opportunities for those riders who are just on the cusp of a big victory, and with a hilly route on offer, Henrietta Christie certainly fits this bill.

The New Zealander frequently ranks inside the top 10 at major events and often works in a support role, too.

However, at the Tour of Britain Women, Christie will be in a leadership role at Human Powered Health with a team ready to support her to what could become a debut win on the Women's WorldTour and a top place in the overall standings.

The 22-year-old captured her first podium in European racing at Gran Premio Ciudad de Eibar and then recently competed at the Vuelta an Andalucia Women, where she was inside the top 10 in three of the four stages and sixth place overall.

These are results that bode well for her goals as she leads the team at the Tour of Britain Women, which also includes home rider Alice Wood, Barbara Malcotti, Linda Zanetti, Silvia Zanardi, and Marit Raaijmakers.

Letizia Paternoster (Liv Alula Jayco)

WAREGEM BELGIUM MARCH 27 Letizia Paternoster of Italy and Team LivAlUla Jayco celebrates at podium as third place winner during the 12nd Dwars door Vlaanderen 2024 Womens Elite a 1299km one day race from Waregem to Waregem on March 27 2024 in Waregem Belgium Photo by Luc ClaessenGetty Images

Letizia Paternoster might be more recognized as a sprinter, but the Italian multi-discipline racer has shown her pedigree in hilly races as well.

While she has a major focus on the track events at this summer's Paris Olympic Games , she also enjoys the hilly Spring Classics and stage races. This spring she finished fourth at Ronde van Drenthe, third at Dwars door Vlaanderen and ninth at Tour of Flanders, which shows her power on some of the sport's most challenging short and steep ascents.

She recently returned to competition at RideLondon Classique, and she hasn't seemed to skip a beat, finishing second into Colchester, fourth into Maldon and eighth into London, wrapping up the three-day event in fourth in the final standings behind overall winner Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime), runner-up Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich Post NL) and third-placed Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime).

The hillier route offered at Tour of Britain Women could give Paternoster the edge over her sprinter rivals, so watch for her to be among those in contention for the overall victory.

When is the Tour de France 2024? How to watch and the latest odds with Tadej Pogacar the bookies' favourite

W ith five weeks to go until the 2024 Tour de France , Tadej Pogacar is the bookies’ favourite to win the yellow jersey — having won the Giro d’Italia emphatically.

The Slovenian is looking to add to his 2020 and 2021 Tour titles, which will be easier if rival Jonas Vingegaard fails to recover from crash injuries sustained in the Itzulia Basque Country tour earlier this year.

Danish rider Vingegaard, the 2022 and 2023 Tour winner, is facing a race against time to be fit and is not on the start list for next week's Critérium du Dauphiné — a warm-up race.

Other yellow jersey contenders Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič, who also both crashed on the Basque tour, have recovered to make the Critérium .

It could make for an interesting 111th edition of the race with or without its biggest names when the racing gets under way next month.

Here is all you need to know about the 2024 Tour de France.

When is the Tour de France 2024?

The Tour will begin with a hilly stage from Florence to Rimini in Italy on Saturday, June 29.

From there, riders will race for 21 days and have two rest days, culminating in a time trial in Nice on Sunday, July 21.

What is the route for the Tour?

After the four days in Italy, the Tour will cross the border to Valloire France on Tuesday, July 2 — the first high mountain stage.

It is the first time the race has had its Grand Depart in Italy. In another first, the riders will cross into San Marino on an early stage.

The Tour will finish outside Paris for the first time as the French capital is preparing to host the Olympic Games and the Paralympics this summer.

The final stage in Nice will be a time trial, meaning the general classification order will go down to the last day.

While usually the last day is something of a ceremony before a sprint, in 2024 it will be the second of two long time trials.

The tough route will take in summit finishes in the French Alps, featured earlier than usual, Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Stage nine will also feature 32 kilometres (20 miles) of gravel roads.

The severity of the stages and lack of flat finishes is bad news for sprinters including Britain's Mark Cavendish — who is seeking a record-breaking 35th Tour stage win.

Eight stages identified as ‘flat’ could give sprinters such as Cavendish reasons to hope — but only if they can stay in the race over the mountains and make time cuts.

The Manx rider told the Guardian : “There’s a few [sprint stages] but you’ve got to get to them — that’s the problem.

“It’s so hard. I’m in a bit of shock, actually.”

How can I watch the Tour de France?

ITV 4 and ITV X will be showing the Tour de France live from June 29 to July 21 with highlights shows every evening — usually at 7pm.

In previous years, the shows have been presented by Gary Imlach with input and commentary from David Millar and Ned Boulting.

ITV will also broadcast Critérium du Dauphiné highlights from June 4 to 11.

Who are the bookmakers’ favourites for the 2024 Tour de France?

Bookmakers are in an unusual position and taking bets on a race scenario with and without defending champion Jonas Vingegaard taking part.

Oddschecker does not have the option of betting on the Dane winning the yellow jersey.

However, the odds of other contenders do shorten if he does not make the start line.

The full list of riders will be confirmed nearer the start of the race.

These are the Oddschecker odds as of May 30 .

Tadej Pogacar: Odds to win with Vingegaard in race (4/11) without Vingegaard (1/2)

The Slovenian is in red-hot form and could add to his two yellow jerseys.

Primož Roglič: Both with and without Vingegaard (9/2)

Another Slovenian who has won the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana in the past but never the Tour de France, despite coming second in 2020.

Remco Evenepoel: With and without Vingegaard (10/1)

The Belgian has previously won the Giro and is an all-rounder.

Juan Ayuso: With and without Vingegaard (16/1)

The Spanish youngster is a teammate of Pogacar at UAE Team Emirates and could step up should misfortune strike the Slovenian but is otherwise on domestique duty.
