Reset trip odometer only

  • Thread starter omar302

Some time ago someone asked if the Trip odometer can be reset without reseting the Average Fuel & Average Economy. Well today I found out that it can be done. Usually if you press the Set button while in the Trip Odo, it will reset the both the Trip Odo & the Ave Fuel/Speed. And if press the Set button while in Ave Fuel/Speed it will also reset the Trip Odo, in other words, they always reset together. If you want to reset only the Trip Odo, then while in the Trip Odo screen press the Set for about 10 seconds until it beeps and resets. This way it will only reset the Trip Odo. And the oppisite is correct if you want to reset only the Ave Fuel/Speed, then in that screen press and hold the Set for about 10 seconds until it resets.

Upgrading instrument clusters for the holden vy commodore, introduction.

  • This Document Describes the differences between various models of Instrument Clusters fitted to the VZ Series Holden Commodore. It also has information on upgrading an Instrument Cluster, modifications that need to be made, wiring information, and some points to watch out for when performing these upgrades. There were several models of Instrument Clusters that were fitted to the VZ Series Commodore. The Following Images of Clusters have been taken from various VZ Commodore Models, and include, Instrument Clusters as fitted to the Executive Instrument Clusters as fitted to the Berlina Instrument Clusters as fitted to the SV6 and SS Models Instrument Clusters as fitted to Calais and Calais Models Instrument Clusters as fitted to the Statesman Caprice Models Instrument Clusters as fitted to the HSV Short Wheelbase Models Instrument Clusters as fitted to the HSV Grange Models

Identifying VY and VZ Instrument Clusters

  • Please note: VY and VZ Instrument are not interchangable VY Instrument clusters can be identified by the Grey Coloured Connector on the back on of the Instrument Cluster. VZ Instrument Clusters have a Blue Connector on the back of the Instrument Cluster. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING VY INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS A different fuel level sender was used between Series I and Series II VY Holden Commodores. The change in the fuel level sender can screw up fuel readings when using a Series II Cluster in a Series I Vehicle, and likewise using a Series I Cluster in a Series II Vehicle. If this problem occures, the Instrument Cluster can be reprogrammed by Holden to work properly with the fuel level sender installed in the vehicle.

Swapping Instrument Clusters

  • When swapping instrument clusters, you will need to have the original odometer reading, as well as other important vehicle parameters programmed in to the replacement cluster. in order for the new cluster / vehicle to function These settings include, 1) Odometer Reading 2) Fuel Guage Calibration 3) Police Mode Programming the Odometer It is possible to reset the Odometer reading on an instrument cluster if the odometer reading is no more than 100 Kms When programming the odometer, it is essential that the correct value be entered as the odometer reading can only be programmed once. To Program the Instrument Cluster Odometer Reading, you will need a suitable Diagnostic Scan Tool 1) Install and connect the diagnostic scan tool to the vehicle 2) Select the Body Type from the scan tool, 3) Select IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) from the scantool menu, 4) Select the Programming menu option, 5) Select the Program Odometer menu option, and follow the menu prompts on the scan tool. Programming the Fuel Guage Calibration When an instrument cluster is replaced, the Fuel Calibration Part Number is to be entered using the Tech 2 Programmer. This identifies the fuel tank size and fuel sender unit resistance to the instrument cluster. The Fuel Calibration Part Number is identified by the Code Index Number, which is associated with a particular vehicle configuration. The Code Version Number identifies the software version. Only the Code Index Number can be changed. 1. From the Programing Menu select Fuel Gauge Calibration and press the Enter key. 2. The Code Index Number and the Code Version Number are displayed. To change the Code Index Number, press the Modify soft key. To exit without making a change, press the Okay soft key. 3. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to highlight a vehicle type and press the Enter key. 4. Follow the Tech 2 screen prompts to complete the programming. 5. Enter the instrument cluster Diagnostic Mode. Press the trip computer switch MODE button until the Fuel Calibration Part Number is displayed on the multifunction display (MFD). Verify that the Fuel Calibration Part Number displayed is correct. Programming the Vehicle Options in to the Instrument Cluster Prior to programming the new instrument cluster, obtain the vehicle options from the existing instrument cluster.

Instrument Cluster Operation

  • The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) contains a driver information center (DIC) which provides visual information to the driver for a number of vehicle functions such as trip computer, audio functions, warnings and reminders. When the ignition is switched to the ON position, a vehicle system check is performed and the status is shown on the Driver Information Center. A number of IPC features will be tested in order to verify the features are working correctly. The following occurs at key ON. The supplementary restraint system warning lamp illuminates briefly (not IPC controlled). The anti-lock brake system (ABS) warning lamp illuminates briefly. The charging system warning lamp illuminates briefly. The brake warning lamp illuminates briefly. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates until the engine is running (not IPC controlled). The seat belt warning lamp will stay illuminated until the driver seat belt is latched (not IPC controlled). If there are no warnings or service reminders the DIC shows a series of welcome screens. If the system check detects a problem, the DIC displays the appropriate warning immediately. If a warning is displayed, press the TRIP button to acknowledge it (once for each warning). The DIC then reverts to the original trip computer display.

Hi All, Now maybe it's just me & my poor arithmetic, or my trip computer is out of whack... What I do know is I have a 75 litre fuel tank, but sometimes the avge l/100kms & the distance to empty don't correspond. Eg. It might say I avge 15lt/100kms, I've done 300kms travelled, yet the distance to empty might say 120kms, when really it should say 200 kms to empty, if the avge fuel is correct. Anyone else noticed this glitch??? And if so, can it be corrected? I don't think I have a fuel calibration option on my car so not sure what to do. Any ideas???

Re: my06 ss vz trip computer issues

Distance to empty estimation is determined by your current driving situation. If you are cruising on a motorway it may be 300 Kms to empty, or if you are in city traffic it may be only 150 Kms to empty, even though you have the same amount of fuel left in the tank.
I've got the same issue, i run my car for about 50 extra k's when it says 14k left something maybe even more k's basically ive never filled up my tank more than 65l even when i run it to the 0k's to go mark.... That leaves 10l in the tank Guess it may not be a bad thing but would be nice if it could be corrected but i'm also missing the calibration settings.
The standard distance to empty seems to be set to show empty when 8-12 useable litres are left in the tank. Call that Holden saving you from walking. gh
Yep, Holden do that deliberately to give you a good safety margin. Distance to empty seems to be weighted heavily towards your current fuel usage. For example, if you have been putting the boot into it a fair bit and then stick it on the freeway at a constant 100kmh you can watch the distance to empty come up and up the further you drive. Similarly, if you have been grandpa'ing it on the highway then start sticking the boot into it or get stuck in heavy traffic you can watch the distance to empty plummet faster than a bride's nightie!
the innaccuracy in the distance to empty figure is well known to holden. VY to VZ (not sure of earlier cars) suffer this problem. And contrary to what the dealers tell you, it is not a "safety margin" factored in at the factory; thats the official line given. The reality is the engineering department responsible for setting the calibrations for the fuel sender never got it right, but nobody likes admitting they are wrong, especially when there is no fix. I had this confirmed to me by somebody in the know (no i won't say who). My VZ SS will take 69 to 70 litres when i've been driving around on 0 kays to empty for about 10km's (i can live with that!), but the adventra will take a minimum 10 litres for the same scenario My VY SS ute did it, so did my VY SS. If any dealer in Adelaide would like to prove me wrong (I wouldn't mind that) they are quite welcome to have either of my cars to fix it. But i know they won't, because they have tried on several occasions and failed. That safety margin line is a cop out. As far as i am concerned, if i wish to run my fuel tank down to eg 10km's left, then i should be able to put at least 73 litres in without fear of running out, not 12litres+....
Hmmm, Well regardless of the fault being intentional or an error in calibration, I spose we can all get used to our own cars quirks & work accordingly. Better to have more fuel than less. Thanks for the input guys. Tim
with the fuel avg bit, call me stupid but do you reset your trip every now and again because it does the avg overall of the trip measured, and that may not resemble what your up to at the time
Originally Posted by boofa21 with the fuel avg bit, call me stupid but do you reset your trip every now and again because it does the avg overall of the trip measured, and that may not resemble what your up to at the time I reset my trip computer after every fill. my driving style doesn't change much either, as in fairly moderate, economical driving style. I usually get in the mid 13 litres per 100kays in the the SS for a tank, which should give me about 500km per tank with a little in reserve. but i find i am constantly filling up at just over 500. Like i said before, i can put up with that. The adventra will only get 450km's tops for the same same economy (gets about 13.2 to 13.8 per tank). sometimes i get the 0km beep with as little as 420km's on the trip meter. These figures are all from suburban driving ie not through the CBD but not open highway either.
Hasn't the issues with fuel indication in the VZ been done to death?
