Finding the best walking shoes for travel can be tough. You want something comfortable enough to get you through a full day of wandering around, but not so comfortable that it screams “I'm a tourist!” And since nobody wants to tote around a bag (checked or otherwise) filled with shoes, the ones that do make the packing list cut need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.

Knowing that a bad pair of shoes can ruin an otherwise lovely travel day, we asked Condé Nast Traveler writers and editors (as well as shopping writers from other Condé Nast titles) to share their tried-and-true kicks, so you don't have to take a gamble on whether they'll actually be comfortable or not. Whether you're looking for sneakers , boots , flats , or sandals , we have recommendations for you. Below, more than 30 of our favorite high-quality, easy-to-pack walking shoes for travel—all cushy, supportive, and versatile—that will take you just about anywhere. Scroll through to see all of our favorite walking shoes, or jump straight to the category you're looking for below.

Susie Plotkin, who works on Condé Nast's global email team, calls these platform boots “the perfect shoe.” She's had them for about three years, and has taken them everywhere. “My boyfriend lives in Switzerland, and they’re the shoe I wear to sightsee around Zurich. I've spent 12 hours walking around Venice in them, and regularly stomp all around Brooklyn in them. They’re a little heavy but super comfortable and can slide on and off so easily.”

A cold-weather favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , these Blundstone boots required no break-in time, and are a great all-purpose boot for fall or winter trips. The pull tabs make them easy to get back on, the shock absorption keeps your feet feeling good even after a few hours on the move, and the double stitching, durable leather, and tough outsole mean you won't be replacing them a few trips later.

Former Traveler editor Meredith Carey wears these waterproof Blondo boots almost all winter long, and brings them along on any fall and winter trips. “They look and feel like leather but I can wear them in snow and rain—I don't have to worry about my shoes surviving when I'm tromping around day-to-day in New York or a new city,” she says. They come in a host of color options, from black to brown leather to snakeskin.

Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of Vagabond's lug sole boots, and recommends a style with a wider toe for maximum comfort on long days of walking. Best for city trips, these Chelsea boots are on the bulkier side, so wear them through security to cut down on suitcase weight.

Spurrell has waxed poetic about Frye's Melissa Chelsea boots before: They're her go-to for any city trip. They look good with jeans, leggings , or dresses, pack down well, and over time, have become as comfortable as sneakers. Plus, they last for years and are sturdy enough to navigate cobblestone streets. What more could you want?

New Balance sneakers have made a major comeback. This style of the cool dad shoes are frequently worn by associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who says this: “These sneakers are just as comfortable as they are cool. I’ve had them for about two years now and they’ve come with me on a weekend trip spent walking around Boston , to the airport for a few flights, and on my very long commutes to the office. They’re a perfect balance of sporty and stylish—they don’t hurt my feet after hours of walking and the neutral shade always matches a variety of outfits in my carry-on. Besides my classic white sneakers , these are my most worn shoe. Bonus: I’m not very cautious about getting my sneakers dirty, but these have somehow stayed clean and in excellent condition—so don’t worry too much about its light hue.”

Hop on the New York City subway and you're bound to see a pair of Vejas or two on your fellow passengers' feet. Global digital director Arati Menon was first drawn to Veja because of the sleek, minimalist design and the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. She landed on the Campo because of its chunkier sole—both an aesthetic preference and a practical one, as it offers more support. “The biggest criticism with Vejas are that they’re stiff when you first buy them, and this is somewhat true—but I’m generally cautious not to overuse new shoes for the first few times, breaking into them little by little,” she says, noting that the Campo is more comfortable out of the box than other Veja styles. “I’ve taken my Campos on rugged national park adventures and European city breaks, and use them as workwear staples. I just retired mine after years of use, but I’m sure I’ll buy another at some point.” To clean, Menon recommends a combination of mild dishwashing liquid on a damp cloth and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

The Adonis is a newer style for Naot—a podiatrist-approved footwear brand —that dropped earlier this year. The sock-style slip-on is made with a removable cork and latex footbed that promises all-day comfort. Flager is a fan of the easy-to-match white and light pink style, and recommends them for city trips. (Pro tip: Bombas's cushioned no-show socks are just the right size to wear underneath.)

There's a reason why the Adidas Stan Smith has evolved from a tennis shoe to a streetwear classic (and can be found on multiple Traveler editors' shoe racks): They're too comfortable to ever want to take off. If you're going on a short trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, wear these—they can handle anything from a day of sightseeing to an impromptu hike, are easy to slide on and off at airport security, and will make you look chic, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort.

Allbirds are a great pick for most every vacation thanks to their versatility and true all-day comfort. These Tree Runners come highly recommended by contributor Lauren Dana Ellman and are available in a half dozen colorways and just as many limited-edition hues. Like all of the brand's shoes, they are machine washable, which means lighter colors are easy to keep looking new.

Recommended by Glamour and Teen Vogue commerce director Brie Schwartz , this playful spin on the classic Converse low-top will add a bit of fun to your travel day. The sneakers are relatively lightweight thanks to the canvas upper, and the vulcanized rubber sole helps with traction.

Look down in an exercise class or marathon and you're bound to see, at minimum, a few pairs of Hokas around you. Glamour 's senior commerce editor, Jenifer Calle , is partial to the brand's Kawana style: “I wore these sneakers when I was in San Antonio last year and they were a lifesaver for my feet,” Calle says. “I did a lot of walking during this trip and was not prepared for the Texas heat. (At one point my partner and I had to step into an H&M to cool off.) Luckily, my sneaks were very bouncy and breathable, so my feet never felt tired or sweaty.”

For those who live in Lululemon athleticwear, the brand's running shoes are a natural extension to your travel wardrobe. Traveler contributor and runner Rachel Chang tested these out when they launched in 2022, and was immediately impressed by the fit (designed specifically for a woman's foot), breathability, and smart features, like a reflective backing.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, Running Shoe, and Sneaker

Editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs wears these shoes everywhere: “To the gym, to the park, to the rave—I sometimes have to remind myself that I own other shoes. You don't have to tie them, just pull a cord [to secure them]. They are so comfortable and easy.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, and Running Shoe

Former Traveler editor Scott Bay is a fan of this Arc'teryx hiker : “To me, it's technical enough to tackle any moderate hike, while being super comfortable all day, and I have been known to wear them to nice restaurants or shows.” Other perks: They last forever and you can throw them in the wash when they're in need of a polish.

Recommended by Calle, these On sneakers boast the brand's biggest layer of CloudTec ever for top-tier cushioning and energy return, as well as reduced muscle fatigue. “I’m not a runner by any means but I like to do a steady three-mile jog around Liberty State Park when the mood strikes,” Calle says. “I’ve been using old Nike sneakers for the last few years, but gave On shoes a try last year, and let me tell you, I didn’t know my feet could feel so much relief while running. I love that the rocker bottoms feel like they give me an extra push during my jog. I’m never going back to regular minimalist sneakers.”

Allbirds Tree Dashers

Allbirds' sneakers are known for being comfortable, but the Tree Dashers—the brand's first pair made specifically for runners—ups the ante. The thick sole will cushion your feet on the longest of days spent exploring, and if you are someone who jogs on vacation, you can pack one less pair of shoes to do so.

Known as the most popular hiking shoe in the world—more than 25 million pairs have been sold since it debuted 15 years ago—Flager was excited to put the new third generation model of the Merrell Moab to the test. “I brought them along on a recent trip to Iceland, which involved some moderate hikes and city walks on wet roads; the shoe held up nicely on both occasions. The shoes have great traction, fit comfortably, and didn't take up tons of room in my carry-on—I can see why they're so beloved.” Jake Smith , a commerce writer for Glamour , is a big fan of the shoe, too: “I've worn them for three years, and while they're nice for hiking, I really love them as walking shoes,” he says.

Emma McDonald, who works on the digital marketing team for Condé Nast, recommends these recovery shoes from Kane. “I have had them for about six months and use them at my standing desk all day long, and while running errands.” The cushiony shoe is made out of Brazilian sugarcane, with raised footbed nodes that are designed to activate blood flow in key pressure points on the sole of your foot.

Malia Griggs , Glamour 's commerce editor, is a big fan of these SeaeVees clogs. “I thought they’d just be rain boots , but I end up wearing them all the time because they’re so easy to slip on, are comfy, and perfect for any sort of drizzly days when I’m out and about in the city,” she says. “This summer, I spent a week in the North Carolina mountains and brought them with me since they’re good plane shoes (easy on and off at security!) and also durable and waterproof enough for walks on little trails. I appreciate that they have enough of a backing to not slide all the way off when I’m walking.”

Another favorite of Schwartz, these leather lug loafers are fairly light at just half a pound each, with a comfortably low heel height of 1.1 inches. Basic black goes with everything, but for a pop of color, order them in red or emerald green.

These colorful Sabah slip-ons come highly recommended by articles director Lale Arikoglu , who calls them “a permanent fixture on my packing list.” They come in dozens of colors, in either a butter soft leather or suede, and are hand stitched by one of the 10 shoemakers who comprise the Sabah Workshop in Gaziantep. “The more I wear them, the better they fit, molding to my feet like a glove—almost as if they were designed just for me,” she says.

This black and white Cole Hahn shoe toes the line between loafer and sneaker perfectly—it's nice enough to wear into the office after hopping off a plane, but casual (and comfortable) enough to wear during a day of sightseeing. If you own enough basic black, you can get the pair with an off-white, gold, or silver leather top, too. Either way, the shoe is made for long days: There's traction on the bottom to keep you from slipping on smooth museum floors, footbeds meant to mold to your feet, and cushioned padding on the heel to prevent rubbing.

Kenny has slipped on these loafers to head to work, go out to dinner—in general, any situation where she wants to look polished but doesn't necessarily want to put on a heel. Made with a soft, merino wool upper, they come in onyx black, teak herringbone, or ivory, shown above, and have a chunky 1.5-inch sole. Best of all, they are fully machine washable.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, and Sandal

Wearing sandals for an extended period of time can be tricky, but former Traveler editor Sarah Ratner swears by good ol' fashioned Birks, with their suede-covered cork-latex footbed that practically molds to your feet over time. The Arizona slides come in every color under the sun and can be purchased in regular or narrow sizes to better fit your feet. Plus, they're easy to match with almost any outfit.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, and Sandal

Tevas are the kind of shoe that once you own a pair, you're a fan for life. They'll come in handy on so many occasions—light hikes through Arizona (find more intense hiking shoes here ), sightseeing through dusty roads in Israel, swimming in rocky reservoirs in Austin . The trail sandals, which Flager recommends, have a bit more arch support than the classic style, meaning they'll be even more comfortable both in cities and on trails.

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Sandal, and Apparel

A second Birkenstock option with a ringing endorsement: The Arizona Big Buckle style. “I am very loyal to my Birkenstocks,” says Arikoglu. “I walked 10 miles in one day in Barcelona in them and they never rubbed.”

reddit travel walking shoes

Another favorite of Kenny's, these Rothy's slides are a welcome update to some of the brand's previous iterations of sandals, which, while cute, offered little when it came to support. “When I put these new slides on from Rothy’s, I immediately knew they will be my go-to summer sandal for beach excursions and vacation days that require a decent amount of walking while also looking put together,” Kenny says. “A durable yet comfortable sandal is always tricky to find, but these have a pretty thick sole and give a lot more support than the flat pair of flip flops I’m always tempted to pack. I went for the neutral beige color that I know will match any midi dress or linen pants I pack this summer.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Sandal, Accessories, Accessory, and Belt

Another one of Spurrell's go-to's , these Tevas are slightly less grippy than the Trail sandals, but are still plenty comfortable for all-day wear. Spurrell has worn them on bike rides, long walks, beach days, and out to dinner in New York—proof of their range, and value on your packing list.

Birdies Starling flat

It can be nice to have a good pair of flats tucked away in your suitcase for a fancy dinner or evening stroll after a long day in sneakers, especially given how easy they are to pack. We like Birdies' The Starling flats, meant to be a modern take on the classic smoking slipper. They're built to last, and to keep your feet comfortable: Inside, there's seven-layer cushioned footbed with elevated arch support, plus a little extra cushion in the heel to prevent it from rubbing. Order them in suede, faux fur, or velvet fabrics.

reddit travel walking shoes

While Rothy's makes a classic ballet flat , too, we love the more sophisticated look of the Point Flat. Available in more than a dozen colors from lollipop red to boysenberry and dark emerald, there's a hue for every kind of traveler and outfit. All of Rothy's shoes are made out of recycled plastic, and cut using the same technology as Suav, meaning there's less waste throughout production. The shoes were recently redesigned to be even more comfortable thanks to a cushier insole and more spacious toebox.

The Best Shoes for Travel – Recommendations from the r/onebag Community

reddit travel walking shoes

This post is a compilation of user recommended travel shoes from r/onebag , a subreddit designed to discuss the art of minimalist travel. Here users post trip reviews, packing lists, and request packing advice and product recommendations. Gear on this site is used by actual minimalist travelers who are simply trying to find good gear and have no interest in promoting a particular brand.

Best shoes for travel

I can’t possibly test every travel shoe to determine which is the best. So to get a list of the best shoes for travel I reviewed all the “recommend me a shoe” posts on r/onebag from 2021. I dug through the comments and recorded any shoe that was recommended or endorsed as a good shoe for one bagging. While there were many more posts about specific shoes, shoe reviews, and packing lists, there were only 35 total general shoe recommendation posts (full list with links at end of post).

I’ll start with a quick One Shoe intro for anyone new to one bagging, then go over my rules and scoring method, followed by the shoe recommendations. The lists are sorted into Top Shoe Brand , Top Shoe Models , as well as by Category for Casual/walker , Running shoes , Sandals , and Boots .

There is No “One Shoe”

As stated in the 8 th Commandment of One Bagging , and as attested to by many, many posts on r/onebag, there is no One Shoe to Rule Them All . There are simply too many types of trips, climates, styles, and preferences for one single pair of shoes to work for all people in all situations.

Lems 9 to 5 Lightweight Minimalist Travel Shoe

However, after sorting through many Shoe Recommendation posts, general trends begin to emerge. The same types of footwear show up again and again for different styles of travel: Business travel, leisure travel, and beach/casual. Generally, a two-shoe approach works for most people in the following situations:

  • Business Travel: Comfortable dressier shoe + running shoe
  • Leisure Travel: Comfortable neutral brown or black walking shoe + running shoe
  • Beach/Casual: Running shoe + sandals

Running shoes are optional and you can switch them out for sandals on almost any type of trip. For cold weather, upgrade shoes to a comfortable weatherproof boot.

Not surprising, the recommendations for shoes was wide-ranging. There was overlap between styles and subjectivity as to what someone might consider a “shoe.” Many posts included a healthy mix of casual walkers, boots, sandals, running shoes etc. To make sense of the madness, I searched shoe recommendation posts using the following rules:

Merrel Trail Glove Ultralight Trailrunning Shoes

  • Only included posts specifically about shoe recommendations. I didn’t include shoes mentioned in packing list posts or other search terms like “sneakers,” “trainers,” “sandals” etc.
  • Largely didn’t include specialty or specific use shoe recommendations. For example, “shoe recommendations for a wedding” wasn’t included. I did however include more general winter, dressy, business casual, walking etc. posts.
  • Didn’t include posts seeking advice about specific shoes.
  • Didn’t include shoe reviews.
  • Didn’t discriminate between “women’s” and “men’s” shoes. I focused on brand and model recommendations.

My focus was on recommendations in the comments. Although a recommendation can be subjective, I tried to be consistent. If a comment mentioned “I love XXX shoe!” it would count. However, if someone said “I tried the XXX shoe on a trip” but didn’t mention whether they liked it, then I generally didn’t count it. As someone using a shoe doesn’t imply an endorsement. Replies to top-level comments were scored if it was clear they also recommended the shoe, eg. “I second this!” would count.

  • Each recommendation of a shoe in the comments gets a +1 score.
  • Upvotes for comments weren’t considered.
  • General mentions of a brand without a specific model get a plus +1 for the brand.

Shoe Recommendations

There were over 150 different shoe models mentioned. Because of the variety of recommendations, I broke the lists up into several categories. Top Shoe Brands , Top shoe Models , and recommendations by category for Casual/Walker , Running Shoes , Sandals , and Boots . Listed in order of popularity.

The Packable Life

16 Tried-And-True Travel Shoes (for Walking All Day)

Three sets of men's travel shoes resting on the bumper of a van

Smart travelers know the value of great shoes. When you’re on your feet all day — whether it’s hiking a trail or walking neighborhoods in a new city — your footwear can make an enormous difference. That’s why I’m here to report on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for walking all day.

I’m a minimalist and typically only take one or two pairs of shoes on the road. My ideal travel shoes are stylish, lightweight, and comfortable all day long. In the summer, I look for more breathable and lightweight shoes, and in winter, I crave warmth and durability.

I’ve worked at REI and traveled extensively in Europe for business and personal endeavors, so I know a thing or two about footwear that’s built for walking all day. I’m happy to share my findings on such brands as Allbirds, Lems, Xero, SeaVees, and Blundstone, as these companies make some truly stellar kicks.

This list includes sneakers, loafers, slip-ons, athletic shoes, and a few sandals that I’ve evaluated for comfort, style, packability, and other key factors.

Travel is back in a big way, so let’s dive headfirst into my list of the best men’s and women’s travel shoes money can buy.

Best Travel Shoes for Men & Women

  • Best All-Around: Allbirds Tree Runners
  • Best Slip-Ons: SeaVees Huntington Middie
  • Zero-Drop Barefoot Shoes: Lems Primal Zen
  • Zero-Drop Barefoot Boots: Lems Boulder Vegan
  • All-Purpose Sneakers: Reebok Classic
  • Ultra-Lightweight & Packable Slip-Ons: Xero Sunrise
  • Trail Running Shoes: Salomon Wander
  • Stylish Hiking Shoes: Merrell Burnt Rock
  • Tough Fitness Kicks: GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

  • Unbreakable Flip Flops: Rainbow Double Layer
  • Hiking Sandals: Teva Universal
  • Considerations for Travel Shoes & Sandals

Best All-Around Allbirds Tree Runners

Allbirds Tree Runners

I’m a huge fan of the Allbirds Tree Runners. They come in a wide variety of colors, and you’ll love their breathability and packability. You’ll have no problem squishing them down flat and tying them to the side of your backpack or even stuffing them into the water bottle pocket.

I criss-crossed Europe in my Allbirds and washed them several times. They held up great! The best thing about Allbirds is how lightweight they are. They’re perfect for walking all day, thanks to the stretchy material that molds to your feet.

If you’re looking for responsibly sourced and comfortable all-day shoes, I can highly recommend the Allbirds.

Best Slip-Ons SeaVees Huntington Middie

SeaVees Huntington Middie comfortable travel slip-ons

Want a slightly more stylish option than the Allbirds? The SeaVees Huntington Middie is my favorite slip-on shoe for travel. The high top and suede material make them easy to dress up or down.

SeaVees are perfect travel companions. I love the simple, minimalistic look they bring to any outfit, so they look great day and night.

Plus, they’re super comfortable and easy to slip on and off. Quite a few online reviewers say SeaVees aren’t just a travel shoe but also a go-to everyday casual shoe.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Shoes Lems Primal Zen

Black and gray Lems brand barefoot men's shoe

I recommend the Lems Primal Zens for the zero-drop traveler because they’re lightweight, versatile, and minimalist, making them excellent travel shoes.

Travel is hard on the body, and some people prefer the benefits of a zero-drop shoe with the natural fit and feel that promotes healthy walking habits. In comparison, traditional shoes can produce an unnatural gait that increases the likelihood of injury.

These Lems can handle anything – from running, hiking, working out, and walking. Their versatility and durability make them perfect for a new adventure every day when traveling.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Boots Lems Boulder Vegan

Lems Boulder Vegan barefoot boots

Traveling in the fall or winter? I’d opt for Lems’ Boulder Vegan Boots. The neutral colors go with any outfit, and they pack down to a size of a puff jacket, making them an easy must-carry.

Lems is a vegan-friendly Colorado brand that strives to make responsibly produced and sustainable footwear. They use recycled products to create new materials and also partner with a non-profit.

The Lems cork footbed molds to your feet and has a wide toebox, so this zero-drop style is perfect for travelers who are on their feet all day. You have a choice of materials to help you find the one that best matches your travel needs.

All-Purpose Sneakers Reebok Classic

White Reebok Classic all-purpose sneakers

If you’re a fan of sneakers, the Reebok Classic offers excellent support and comes in an array of colors and styles.

The downside to these shoes is their limited packability and versatility. Compared to others on this list, the Reebok Classics don’t pack down as small and don’t dress up as easily for attending those special dinner events.

I love these Reeboks because they’re highly functional and will take you to your destination in comfy sneaker style.

Ultra-Lightweight & Packable Slip-Ons Xero Sunrise

Grey ultralight slip-ons for travel

The Xero Sunrise slip-ons are the lightest and most packable shoe on this list. Weighing in at a ridiculous 5.6 ounces each (men’s size medium), these were designed for those who want a comfortable shoe to slide into when it’s time to chill.

Though I don’t recommend climbing a mountain in these or donning them during a 30,000-step marathon around the city, I do think they’d work perfectly for a relaxing night on the town, strolling around a farmers market, or kicking your feet up by the pool.

From experience, I can tell you these are about as comfortable, cozy, and convenient as travel shoes come these days. For my more relaxed trips, they’ll make it into my travel bag every single time.

Trail Running Shoes Salomon Wander

Black Salomon Wander footwear for trail running and high-volume walking

The Salomon Wander is made for trail running but also works quite well as a travel shoe. They’re versatile for active travelers who like to walk, run, and hike all day, every day.

These shoes have ample cushion that makes long walks in the city easier on your knees, but they aren’t quite as stylish as some and don’t dress up as easily.

Salomon is a trusted and well-reviewed brand, and their Wander is a fine addition to their respected product line. If you spend all day on your feet, look no further.

Stylish Hiking Shoes Merrell Burnt Rock

Merrell Burnt Rock hiking shoes

I love the Merrell Burnt Rock because they’re so stylish. These are ideal for travelers who like to hit the trail occasionally but also know they’ll spend most of their time in the city.

The Burnt Rock comes in various colors, and their earth-toned palette makes them about as versatile of a shoe as you’ll find on this list. The mixture of suede and mesh make them breathable like a sneaker, but with style.

Flip the shoe over and you’ll find a beautiful rubber outsole for reliable traction, yet these don’t look like hiking shoes.

Tough Fitness Kicks GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

Are you an active traveler who pushes most shoes to their limits? Or someone who will work out CrossFit-style before racing off to see the sights? Then I wholeheartedly recommend the GORUCK Ballistic Trainers.

The Ballistic Trainers are designed for the traveler who puts their shoes through hell. They’re extra supportive, with tough nylon uppers and durable triple compound rubber. These shoes are seriously durable.

Not only are they built to last, but also are stylish and versatile enough for any casual travel. They’re low-profile sneakers in neutral colors that can be paired with any casual clothing. The GORUCK Ballistic Trainers make for a perfect travel shoe for the always-on-the-move traveler.

Men’s Dress Shoes Florsheim Oxford

Florsheim Oxford men's dress footwear

For men who like to travel in style, the Florsheim Oxfords are ideal shoes for looking good all day and night. I recommend these for business commuters who need to balance professionalism with their active lifestyle.

The Oxfords have a very classic, minimalist style. Their Ortholite X-40 rebound foam soles deliver non-stop comfort no matter how long you’re on your feet.

The Florsheim Oxford is a quality dress shoe that won’t break your budget. Traveling for work is often tiring, but these shoes will cushion your feet and keep the spring in your step.

Women’s Dress Shoes Rothy’s The Point

Rothy’s The Point slip-on women's dress shoes

Rothy’s is a high-quality brand that’s known for transforming recycled plastic bottles into simple, stylish shoes. They have classic silhouettes and a variety of styles to match your personality.

Why have I included them on this list? Not only are they simple and packable, but they’re designed to be washed. I’ve had mine for years, and even after several washes, they look as good as new.

While they cost a bit more, the material quality and durability are well worth the price. For businesswomen on their feet all day, these are the stylish flats you’ve been wanting.

Slip-On Chelsea Boots Blundstone 550

Blundstone 550 leather slip-on chelsea boots

These are my go-to winter travel shoes — versatile and stylish slip-on Chelsea boots that are easy to love. Yes, they’re one of the more expensive options here, but well worth the investment.

If I was traveling and could only bring one pair of shoes, I’d bring these. I can work, hike, or walk all day in them with no problem. Compared to the Lems, the Blundstone 550 are more durable and rugged. They do get a bit hot in warmer climates, so consider the low cuts.

Caution: Blundstone is an Australian brand, and AU and US sizes differ slightly. For example, at REI the boot size on the box is AU sizing but the size selection tool on the website is US sizing. Make sure you’re ordering the right size.

Minimalist Barefoot Sandals Luna Oso Flaco Winged Edition

reddit travel walking shoes

If you’re traveling to a warm climate and have little need to dress up, I’d recommend the Luna Oso Flaco. In another post, I chose these as the top minimalist barefoot sandal , due to their many excellent qualities for active travelers on the go.

Weighing under one pound per pair, these are lightweight as well as super-compact. You’ll barely notice them in your suitcase or backpack.

The Oso Flaco sandals are the best zero-drop option for travelers who want to connect with the earth. Their lightweight and rugged sole makes them a great choice for your adventures.

Classy Slide-On Sandals Birkenstock Arizona

Birkenstock Arizona comfortable slide-on travel sandals

Our favorite versatile slide-on sandals are the Birkenstock Arizonas. These are a classic style that has transitioned from dorky to stylish over the years.

I sometimes travel in summer with friends who also wear these shoes. We all agree that they’re ultra-comfortable and perfect for all-day treks in the city. Whether you wake up in hostels or highrise hotels, these are reliable urban cruisers.

One caveat, however: on hot, sweaty days in these sandals, my feet sometimes get blisters, so I’ll usually opt for sneakers instead. Other than that, I love my Birkenstocks for traveling.

Unbreakable Flip-Flops Rainbow Double Layer

Rainbow Double Layer flip flops

Rainbows are flip-flops built for the long haul. But be sure to break these in before your trip. They may be uncomfortable at first, but once they mold to your feet, you’ll never want to take them off.

I know people who have worn these for years and swear by them. As with some of the other shoes on this list, these are quite flat and packable. The two shoes sandwiched together are about the thickness of a paperback book.

The Rainbow product guarantee covers all manufacturing defects for life, no matter how old. This lifetime replacement policy is another reason to love these traveler favorites.

Hiking Sandals Teva Universal

Teva Universal sandal for men and women

Want a more substantial and supportive sandal than the Bedrocks? I’d point you to the Teva Universal Sandal — versatile, classic, and more affordable.

These come in several neutral colors that simplify dress-up. I had a pair with copper-colored straps that paired easily with dresses I wore for a summer in Italy.

Teva Universals are lightweight and can be easily stowed. Save space by using their Velcro straps to fasten them to the outside of your backpack.

Criteria for Travel Shoes & Sandals

Shoes flipped upside down showing black soles with the Lems brand logo

This list reflects several key factors you should consider before packing your suitcase with travel shoes. Some may be more relevant than others, based on your travel needs.

No matter where you’re going, your shoes must always be comfortable, especially when the steps start to pile up. Treat your feet right by carefully considering the cushioning and breathability.

An ill-fitting pair of shoes can be distracting and even painful at times, so do your do diligence as you research shoes, read reviews, and reference the sizing guide to ensure you get the right fit.

Styling is important if a shoe is to be truly versatile. I lean more towards minimalist sneakers if I’ll be going to museums all day followed by a relaxing dinner at night. Save space in your suitcase by packing a style that complements as many of your outfits and activities as possible.

We’ve done our best to pick a wide array of shoes that will look good on anyone, and have strayed away from the dorky Rick Steves dad sneakers of the past. (Sorry, Rick.)

Laced vs. Slip-On

I often pack one pair of laced and one pair of slip-on shoes for ease of use and comfort (slip-ons) and athletic performance (laced). There are other styles to consider, too, like boots and sandals, so do your research and choose what’s best for you.

I usually wear my slip-ons for more leisurely activities and wear laced kicks for more high-intensity activities that call for more foot and ankle support.

Breathability

When you’re a high-intensity traveler who puts in a lot of steps , you need a set of footwear that’ll release the body heat that your feet produce. Otherwise, you’re looking at clammy, sweaty feet that are prone to blisters. Gross.

We did our best to pick breathable shoes that will keep your feet dry and fresh as you pile up the miles, so long as you match them up with a capable pair of travel or hiking socks .

Have you ever had a pair of cheap shoes crap out on you midway through a trip? I haven’t, but I can imagine it’d be quite the pain in the butt to replace shoes in a foreign land. I don’t have such problems with my footwear since I always pick travel shoes that are durable and built for the long haul.

To ensure you buy a pair of durable shoes, read reviews, keep a close eye on the materials used to produce them, and only buy well-reviewed products from trusted brands.

Packability

As a minimalist traveler, packability is one of my top priorities. I wear my bulkiest shoes on the airplane while packing my lighter and more compact pair, as well as my sandals.

Saving space in your minimalist travel pack is a top consideration when hitting the road, so pick shoes that’ll pack down small if you intend on traveling light .

Weight and packability go hand in hand. And lighter shoes are better when you’re carrying a weekend backpack, duffle, or suitcase. Shoes tend to be among the heaviest travel items we carry.

Noel, the founder of this website, is an ultralight backpacker who nerds out over the weight of each piece of gear in his backpack. Maybe you should too.

Affordability is another key factor. I want all of the factors listed above, but not at an unfair cost. Remember that your shoes must endure cobblestones, dirt roads, train stations, and the occasional hike. That’s why you don’t see any cheap Amazon knockoffs on this list.

We did our best to recommend an array of well-reviewed shoes across a wide range of budgets.

Which Travel Shoes Will You Lace Up?

Man with blue jeans and black boots walking down a cobblestone road at sunset

This has been my take on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for all day walking. All of these shoes are stylish, comfortable, durable, lightweight and breathable. With any of these, your feet will thank you for making their next travel adventure as comfy as possible.

Don’t waste a single precious travel day looking for new shoes (or band-aids) because you chose the wrong footwear. This list consists of quality brands like Allbirds, Lems, Xero, Reebok, Blundstone, and others that you can rely on. Please share your experiences in the comments section.

I’ve traveled extensively in Europe wearing several of these shoes and hope my experiences will help you more comfortably navigate all those airports, train stations, and city streets that await you in the future. May all your travel adventures be low-impact, smooth sailing, and on-time!

Any shoe can be a walking shoe, but not every shoe can be a good walking shoe; good as in supportive and comfortable over long stretches of sidewalk, street, cobblestone, and trail. Good as in good looking enough to like being seen in whether that's at the coffee shop down the block or a vinyl bar in Tokyo. These are the qualities that I think of when I think of the best walking shoes , which also happen to be the best travel shoes.

Though walking is a natural movement, it’s not always as simple as hitting the sidewalk in any old shoe. If you’ve ever gone on a long hike or walked miles across a city, you may be familiar with aching heels, lower back pain, and other bipedal afflictions. Every shoe is designed to protect your foot but not every walking shoe will suit your support needs or the terrain, so it's worth giving a little thought to the pair that you pick for your travels.

Below, you'll find my picks for the best walking shoes for wearing at home or for any kind of trip. After the list, i've provided more info on walking shoes and what you should consider when buying a new pair, including some FAQs.

What We Look for in Walking Shoes & How We Tested

Every adventure may merit its own set of features—like GORE-TEX, extra grip, breathability, a slip-on design, or something else—almost every trip will involve spending time on your feet. Whether you're exploring Zion or glamping in England's Lakes District , or simply getting steps in at home between meetings, you'll want to consider the best walking shoes through the key features of comfort and support. You should feel both when you try on a shoe for the first time, but these qualities should last over a full day, too. Once you have these, then you can hone in on specific needs like waterproofing, foot shape, moisture wicking properties, and style.

Field Mag's team of editors and gear testers has been roaming the world for going on a decade and have got our feet in as many pairs of shoes as we can during that time, from hiking boots to running shoes to made-for-walking shoes, to hiking sandals . This list represents the latest and greatest in the world of walking shoes, based on our testers' experiences with them as well as extensive research on new models and conversations with the companies making them.

The 11 Best Walking Shoes For Men (and Women) in 2024

tanner-bowden-walking-shoes-6

Pros: Comfy, quick lace system is nice, versatile Cons: Not as cool looking as other Hokas

Hoka shoes are the original chonks, starting as a plush alternative to the early 2000s Born to Run minimalist craze. Now Hoka is one of the top brands making walking and running shoes, which have such a devoted fan base that it’s tough to narrow down the options in a beloved lineup (the Hoka Bondi is a cult-level everyday running shoe for walking), but ultimately, the Hoka Transport is our top pick as a dedicated pair of comfortable walking shoes.

The Transport is specifically designed as a city-savvy walking shoe for commuters and travelers trodding long distances on the daily. Quick-toggle laces are easy to loosen and tighten for on-the-go accessibility, but wearers have the option to use traditional laces as well. Neutral stability underfoot is suitable for most walkers and easily accommodates custom footbeds, and the EVA midsole cushioning is thick without feeling damp and unresponsive. Reflective accents add a touch of urban safety with GORPcore style sensibilities, too.

Most Comfortable: ASICS Gel-Nimbus 26

Pros: Comfy all day long, good for running, breathable upper Cons: No weather resistance

Field Mag editor-at-large Tanner Bowden is a longtime running shoe tester, and of all the pairs he tried in 2023, the Gel-Nimbus 25 was his pick for most comfortable. He put over 225 miles on his pair before getting the updated Gel-Nimbus 26, and attests that it's just as cushy as its predecessor. While they're a great pair for running, the Nimbus is also ideal for walking around all day long with plenty of cushion for shock absorption and also enough rebound to keep things from feeling too squishy. It helps that this shoe's upper is also soft, stretchy, and breathable, so you'll never get sweaty feet.

Pros: Good for anything, super lightweight, great traction, comfy Cons: Expensive, sizing can be tricky

New footwear companies often take a long time to get up and running. Not Norda, which right off the line has impressed legions of trail runners with the 001. The shoe is made to be highly durable with a Dyneema upper, a hefty Vibram rubber outsole for great grip, and a Vibram SLE midsole too. We expected it to be trail-use only, but have found ourselves wearing it on the daily; to work, to run errands, to go out, as hiking shoes. It looks good too (it's right in line with the never-ending GORP trends ), and the fact that you can run or hike in it makes it perfect for travel.

Pros: Breathable, responsive feel Cons: Rolling can feel weird at first

The Keen WK400 walking shoe is all about forward momentum. KEEN.CURVE technology features constant curve rocker geometry and a responsive, high-energy midsole to create natural forward momentum. The motion is so effortless that Keen claims that this pair of walking shoes will elevate your experience from everyday routine to a truly fun activity. Some reviewers claim that the shape can feel odd when not in motion, so the WK400s definitely function best as part of a quiver, but don't be surprised if you take them 300 to 500 miles even as part of a set.

Pros: Classic leather sneaker look, great casual walking shoes Cons: Could be overkill for some

The Brooks Addiction Walker 2 walking shoes are designed for those who need extra cushioning and stability, including plus-size individuals. Brooks’ Extended Progressive Diagonal Rollbar provides full-foot support that cradles your foot and encourages a natural stride, and the shoes come in a wide array of widths to accommodate every walker. The BioMoGo DNA foam midsole offers adaptable cushioning that responds to unique strides and weights and helps reduce joint impact. The leather upper is durable and stiffer than mesh walking shoes for extra support, and the certified slip-resistant soles provide traction on slick surfaces.

Pros: Versatile, rugged, affordable Cons: Look isn't for everyone

While most slip-on shoes opt for minimalism that can't stand up for more than a few hours on your feet, the Jungle Moc goes big. It has a supportive footbed, a super-comfy EVA midsole, and a rugged rubber outsole that you can take off-road. It's telling that the shoe has been a staple in Merrell's lineup for more than 20 years, but we were somehow still surprised to try the latest version of the Moc (featuring a recycled footbed) and find that it's really as comfortable all day long as everyone's been saying it is.

Best Boot: Blundstone Original 550

Pros: Good for dressing up, supportive Cons: Expensive compared to other picks

The Blundstone Original 550 boot is the semi-ugly Tasmanian gardener's boot that America wholeheartedly adopted due to its durability, easy Chelsea design , and ability to pair with anything. This best seller's leather upper is water-resistant for four-season use and the higher ankle provides extra support (but not overkill) to the ankles, perfect for a walk anywhere. Blundstone’s shock-absorbing sole provides excellent traction on different surfaces too and the boot can easily accommodate an insole (and it comes with a volume filler that goes under the stock insole)—if there is one travel shoe that I found can truly do everything, it’s the Blundstone Original 550.

tanner-bowden-walking-shoes-2

Pros: Responsive, comfy upper Cons: Not the best for fast runs

In testing the latest version of one of Saucony's most beloved running shoes, we were surprised at how responsive and comfortable it was, and also how stable it felt underfoot. As a result, we found ourselves lacing up the Triumph 21 for quick errands in addition to quicker runs, where the cushy midsole absorbs impact. It's definitely a run-first shoe, but if you're into one-pair travel and plan to walk a lot do some jogging, the new Triumph is an excellent choice that'll keep you comfy in Main Cabin, museums, and beyond.

Best Walking Shoes for Wide Feet: Altra Timp 5

Pros: Roomy toe box, excellent grip Cons: Zero-drop can take getting used to

Technically, the Timp isn't a hiking shoe, it's a trail running shoe . But the combination of lightness, support, grip, and wide footbox that makes it ideal for trail running also makes it perfect for any trip or day that involves a lot of walking, especially if a chunk of it is going to be on dirt and rock and roots. The Timp has a Vibram Megagrip outsole for extra grip. It also has the two features that have earned Altra tons of appreciation from runners—a wider, foot-shaped toe box and zero drop from heel to toe. This can take some getting used to, but most who do come to love it. (It's also worth saying that the American Podiatric Medical Association awarded the shoe a Seal of Acceptance.)

Women's Option: Yes Weight: 9.8 oz Drop: 0 mm Price: $155

tanner-bowden-walking-shoes-3

Pros: Grippy, supportive, easy on/off Cons: Take some wearing in

Birkenstock may have secured a reputation as hippie footwear, but its shoes have also had street cred among podiatrists and orthopedists—for nearly a century. Every pair, including the Tokio Super Grips, has a super-supportive sculpted footbed with built-in arch support and wears in well over time. The Tokios add a heel strap to the classic clog for extra security and a grippy rubber outsole that makes them capable of true all-day wear. Birkenstock imagined them partly for service workers and health professionals (as in, folks who are on their feet all day), so they'll handle cruising around town just fine. (Also, if you're a fan of "The Bear," these are what Carmy and Syd wear in the kitchen.)

Pros: Supportive, great for varied terrain Cons: Heavier than other sandals

Chacos have separated themselves from the strappy sandals crowd—known for minimal support—with their big, supportive soles. They're ideal for nearly any type of outdoor activity where sandals fit the bill—one of our testers even hikes a big portion of the Appalachian Trail in a pair of Z/1s. The Mega Z/Cloud takes that recipe and gears it even further towards comfort, making it the ideal sandal for outdoor activities and casual cruising all day long. One of the ways it does that is with Chaco's slightly softer Cloud cushioning, and another way is with extra-wide straps. We've found that these straps provide more security with less pressure on the edges compared to other sandals, even on uneven terrain. They have more of a hug feel to them, rather than the typical cinching down. Like other Chacos, they have a super-grippy outsole that can handle trails, rivers, rocks, and sidewalks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to look for in walking shoes.

The best walking shoes should be comfortable and provide ample stability, with a cushioned sole for shock absorption and good arch support to prevent foot fatigue and avoid injury. Walking shoes feature varying levels of drop (the difference between the height of the heel and the forefoot) and midsole cushioning, which will affect how each pair feels and provide different levels of stability. Those with particular needs, like additional support or correction for overpronation or help with knee pain or issues to the plantar fascia, may benefit from a neutral shoe with a custom insole.

Most brands have a higher heel-to-toe drop but there are still brands making zero drop shoes. The jury is out on if drop causes or prevents injury, but as a general rule, those who need immediate arch support or have heel pain will benefit from a traditional drop (10mm). Those who are looking to strengthen their arches over time or have plantar fasciitis will benefit from zero drop shoes. Some of us have flat feet or wide feet, so as always, it's best to try on shoes in-store to get the right fit—nay, the perfect fit.

Breathability

A lightweight and breathable design is also important to keep your feet cool and dry in warmer conditions. Breathable sneakers will prevent moisture build up on the inside, which can lead to blisters and other ailments that take the fun out of walking. Waterproof shoes and hiking boots such as those with Gore-Tex (often denoted as GTX in the shoe name) will inherently be less breathable due to the presence of that waterproof membrane. The right socks can also help keep your feet dry.

Wide Toe Box

The shoe should fit snugly with enough room for your toes to move and splay out, especially over the course of a long day packed with strolls. Some shoes are designed with extra wide toe boxes to promote natural movement and toe splay and will be denoted as such in the description. Designs vary from brand to brand—Asics won't use the same last as Reebok or New Balance, for example—but you'll also find that shoes vary within brands too.

If you’re in the market for a walking shoe that also performs on trails, look for durable materials that can withstand wear and tear. Grippy soles and deeper lugs will provide better traction on wet and uneven surfaces, but they might not be as comfy on pavement and sidewalks all day long. Upper and midsole materials will, naturally, wear out over time too, especially some of the softer meshes and foams found in many lightweight running shoes with lots of cushioning. On the other end of the spectrum, a good leather boot will last the longest, but it might not provide the most comfort.

How Do I Break In My New Shoes?

Walk in them! If you're buying walking shoes for a trip, wear them for shorter jaunts around home first. Wear them at work, to the grocery store, and around your home. There are hacks to make the break-in period go faster, but in our experience the best way to do it is the old fashioned way. Most of the shoes on our list don't really need a break in period—these aren't backpacking boots.

How Often Should I Replace My Walking Shoes?

Replace your walking shoes when they start to show real signs of wear and tear. This might look like worn out tread, torn mesh, or delaminating layers. Be mindful of replacing them too soon—a tiny hole in the upper might not look nice but is probably nothing to worry about, and most walking shoes should last for 300 to 500 miles and even beyond. Repair or resole them when you can (especially if they're boots), and check the brand's warranty program if they seem to fall apart too soon.

Is It Okay To Buy Running Shoes For Walking?

Yes! With a cushioned and supportive construction, many running shoes and trail running shoes make great walking shoes. Some running shoes might have features specifically for running that won't do much for you if walking is all you plan to use them for though—you don't need a carbon fiber plate in there—so just make sure the features aren't too extra.

Intentional Travelers

Best Wool Travel Shoe for Walking (Allbirds vs Giesswein vs Vessi)

Is it possible to find one travel shoe to rule with them all? Or even something you’d use 80% of the time while traveling? If you’re a minimalist and do not have space in your bag to bring multiple pairs of shoes, it’s hard to find the perfect multi-functional, multi-seasonal shoes for traveling.

During one of our Europe trips, we planned to do a lot of walking and exploring in cool to cold weather. Some rain was also likely to be in the forecast. So we needed to find good light-weight, all-weather, walking shoes for our trip.

We started searching online for things like, “travel shoes for winter” and “best walking shoes for Europe in Fall and Winter.” The results were slim.

Updated: Summer 2023. Originally published: September 2019.

We were not looking for boots, which we both feel are not comfortable walking in for long periods of time (not to mention they are bulky).

When we removed the word “winter” from the search, there were more options, but nothing that would keep us dry in a downpour, or warm in cold climates.

But there seemed to be a fair amount of travelers referring people to merino wool shoes and specifically a company called Allbirds. This company started a new trend in the shoe industry using a natural fabric normally associated with clothing.

And so began our quest to find the best travel shoes for Europe in winter.

We ordered 7 pairs of shoes and compared 3 of the most popular travel shoe companies on the market: Allbirds , Giesswein , and Vessi Footwear .

The shoe review carnage!

In this post we will cover:

– What to look for in the perfect winter travel shoe – Why merino wool? – A review and comparison of Allbirds vs. Giesswein vs. Vessi wool shoes – Updates on new Allbirds shoes      – Allbirds Mizzles: Runners vs. Dasher vs. Trail Runners SWT vs. Wool Flyer – Our final shoe choice recommendation for men and women – Other options like Columbia waterpoof travel shoes – FAQs to know about wool shoes and wool sneakers

Allbirds vs. Giesswein vs. Vessi Comparison Chart

The case for the perfect travel shoes.

Similar to other gear guides we’ve posted, we’re strong believers that everyone should find the travel gear that best fits their own preferences, needs, and style. What works for us may not work for you, and it’s best to do some research for your needs.

When it comes to travel shoes, here are important considerations for us:

– Durability: We walk a lot of miles in our travel shoes and we believe they should hold together for at least a year-and-a-half. – Stylish for different kinds of situations : We want shoes that look good and fit scenarios from casual to business casual. – Weather-resistant : Rain is common where we live. And some of our travel destinations may be cool or rainy on occasion. We don’t need the shoe to be waterproof, but some water resistance is ideal. – Comfortable : We want to be able to wear the shoes all day without our feet hurting.

This doesn’t seem like an unreasonable list, right?

It should also be noted that, obviously, not everyone’s feet are the same. Here’s a little background about our feet, to help you compare our results with your own needs.

– Michelle has narrow feet and high arches. Shoes that are stiff, especially above the heel, cause blisters easily. She typically wears a half size up for her Asics running shoes.

– I (Jedd) have a very wide toe box, low arches, and a small heel. Often times I’ll go half-size to full-size up to compensate for the width of my feet. Most shoes feel too narrow in the toe box. My favorite brands are Olukai (casual) and Columbia Montrail (running).

Best Wool Travel Shoe for Walking (Allbirds vs Giesswein vs Vessi)

Wool runners: Water-resistant Walking Shoes for Travel

Nature knows best.

When I used to work at REI, my colleagues raved about merino wool. It’s a natural product that comes from sheep. It wicks away moisture to help keep you dry. Its insulation keeps you warm .

This makes sense. When we were on the south island of New Zealand last year, we encountered thousands and thousands of sheep who can weather (pun intended) everything from snow and sleet, to bright, hot sunny days.

But only recently has this amazing fabric become more common in shoes. It’s still an uncommon choice, but we have a feeling that will change.

Thanks to advances in technology, wool can be tightly woven and combined with other materials and manufacturing techniques to better repel water .

It’s no wonder that this category of urban styled walking shoes made with merino wool is growing. Let’s look at the two major players first: Allbirds and Giesswien.

Allbirds Shoes for Travel

I’d be shocked if you haven’t seen some sort of advertisement for Allbirds . When you search for terms like, “comfortable stylish walking shoes,” these often come up. They’ve been really good about getting their products to influencers and advertising on social media.

Allbirds wool runners for men review

We both ordered Allbirds Wool Runners for our initial test. This is their original style but they now have more shoe options – see our update below.

We went with the Wool Runners because they met our needs for our upcoming trip to Europe in the Fall .

What We Liked About Allbirds Wool Runners

Out of the box, this was the most comfortable of the three that we tried.

Both Michelle and I couldn’t believe how pillowy the shoes felt with our first steps. It felt like wearing a cozy sock .

The material did not itch or feel irritating against our skin. It was also shocking how light the shoes are.

We like the overall look of the runners, too. The branding is minimal (on the heel), and we both felt it met our goals to be both stylish and casual . The overall construction of the shoe was pretty good, especially for this price point.

At $95, Allbirds were the most affordable of all the shoes we tried on. And they had the most lenient return policy . They are so confident in their product that you can wear and test them in real-life situations for 30 days and still return them for a full refund, no questions asked.

What We Didn’t Like About Allbirds Wool Runners

There is no structure in the wool shoe top, meaning you feel like your foot slides around a little bit. I think the overall design lends itself to be very comfortable when not moving, but we didn’t feel as confident walking around.

Both of us worried that we might roll our ankles on the cobblestones of European streets.

Allbirds sizing was also difficult for me. I followed their instructions to size up for half sizes and initially ordered a size 10. But the toe box was way too narrow for me and surprisingly not that long. (I’m probably a 9.5 W.) But thanks to their return policy, I easily ordered size 11 and found it was a better fit.

Update: Allbirds “rain-ready” Wool Mizzles Shoes

The Allbirds Mizzles line are certainly a step up from the originals for cold, wet weather.

  • For one, they feel sturdier , which was our main concern in our initial test.
  • The wool is thicker and treated with an ECO PASSPORT Certified fluorine-free water repellent coating .
  • And finally, the treads have better traction than the original Allbirds wool shoes.

Clearly, this makes the Mizzles even better for winter travel !

We decided to do a second round of testing to try out three different variations of Allbirds Mizzle: Runners, Runners Up (a high top version), and Dashers.

As of 2023, there are now Trail Runner SWT Mizzles and Wool Flyer Mizzles, made for hiking and long distance running in wet weather.

While still soft and cozy on the feet, you can feel a bit more stiffness back behind the heel and ankle. Personally, it’s not my favorite fit. All the other features of this shoe are the same as the Mizzles Runners.

P.S. If you’re wondering about the new Allbirds tree runners vs wool runners, the biggest difference is material. For summer travel, definitely consider the Allbirds Tree line. They’re made from a lighter eucalyptus material.

Update: Allbirds Trail Runners SWT

reddit travel walking shoes

When comparing Allbirds wool runners vs. trail runners, there are some key differences. The new trail running shoe has a similar style on top to the wool dasher mizzles. The shoe can be slipped on and off even when the laces are tied, though it’s secure and stable while being worn.

The soles of the trail runners have the best traction of Allbirds shoes, however, they also seem bulkier than necessary. Behind the heel is especially thick, and I think the toebox appears wider from above than it actually is.

While the website description for Allbirds Trail Runners says: “Durable, water-repellent finish helps keeps shoes from getting soggy”, the fabric section on top is not waterproof.

In my test, water did bead up on the top of the shoe at first. But it didn’t take long it to soak through to my socks. Running through long grass with dew, for example, could lead to wet socks with these shoes.

Personally, I would need this bulky of a shoe to be more water resistant in order to justify packing it for travel. But I like the look!

Giesswein Shoes for Travel

Whereas Allbirds lead the pack in the wool casual shoes category, Giesswein is the best alternative.

Giesswein wool runners review for women

For the purpose of our Giesswein shoes review, we both chose Giesswein’s Merino Wool Runners .

What We Liked About Giesswein Merino Runners

Where the original Allbirds shoes lacked form and structure, Giesswien made it up for it. The shoe felt solid enough to hold your foot in place when you walked while still maintaining some of that glove-like comfort.

We also liked the color options . As you can see in the photos, I actually tried the baby blue version and really liked how it looked. Overall, the construction of the shoe felt nice and comfortable .

What We Didn’t Like Giesswein Merino Runners

First, we didn’t like the branding stamped on the side of the shoe. Nothing against their logo, but it’s very prominent on the shoe. It’s our personal preference to avoid big brand labels and symbols.

The logo also puts the shoe more firmly in the casual category and we’d like shoes that can feel more dressy if needed.

As for comfort? Michelle liked her fit. I was very uncomfortable in these shoes because of how wide my feet are.

You can actually see in the pictures above where my feet wanted to bust out on the side of the shoes (the middle section). My feet felt cramped and this time I didn’t feel that ordering a size up would have helped.

The Giesswein runners are the most expensive of our test shoes, at $129. The return policy was also the least lenient. They allow returns within 14 days, only worn indoors, so you can’t try them on in real-life situations.

–> Check out Giesswein Women’s Merino Wool Runners here –> Check out Giesswein Men’s Merino Wool Runners here

Allbirds vs Giesswein Wool Runners

When it comes to the best travel shoe for walking between these two contenders, it’s really personal preference.

All in all, we both had very positive feelings about Allbird Wool Runners. Though I personally wish the toebox was a little wider, and Michelle wanted more support, they were very comfortable.

Michelle actually preferred the structure of the Giesswein Wool Runners to the Allbirds. I might have too if the toebox and soles were larger. It should be noted that all of these shoes are shockingly lightweight in general but the Allbirds felt the lightest.

We both agreed which shoe won regarding price and value — the Allbirds is the clear choice here.

Since it’s virtually impossible to find these shoes in the store, we appreciated Allbirds return/refund policy to give us time and a real-world opportunity to try their shoes. We recognize that this is pretty unconventional (as no one wants to buy and wear used shoes) but it really helps to give shoes a proper trial run.

Vessi Eco-Friendly Waterproof Sneakers

But wait, there’s more! During our research, we came across Vessi Footwear , which Kickstarted their way to producing waterproof, breathable shoes.

Vessi waterproof shoes for men review

We ordered the Vessi Men’s Cityscape Sneaker and the Vessi Women’s Everyday Sneaker . Would these be the best waterproof shoes for travel?

What We Liked About Vessi Footwear

First off, the shoes are modern and stylish . They have a glove-like fit, with comfortable material . The sole seemed big enough to be very supportive. A major bonus is their claim to be waterproof and breathable though we weren’t able to fully test this, due to their return policy to be in new condition.

The return policy is a generous 60 days but you can’t test them in real-world situations, only indoors.

What We Didn’t Like About Vessi Footwear

Though the shoes seemed stylish, we didn’t feel it was the right kind of style for us. We want our shoes to look nice but not stand out.

Out of the three shoe companies, we felt the most discomfort when we tried on the Vessis. We both knew immediately these weren’t the shoes for us by the fit. For one, the arch placement wasn’t quite right.

The foot hole on top of the shoe, like aquasocks or water shoes, is designed to seal against the ankle and keep out water. This actually made it a challenge to slip our feet in and out. And the seam dug into Michelle’s ankles when walking. When comparing Vessi vs Allbirds or Giesswein, Vessi comes in last place for us.

Granted, just because these shoes didn’t feel right for our feet doesn’t mean it won’t for yours.

Vessi has a lot of positive reviews. In fact, they had so much demand, Vessi actually paused new orders shortly after we tried them so they could catch back up with production.

Our Top Choice Fall Travel Shoes for Europe

Michelle’s pick: Giesswein Wool Runners For Michelle, having some structure and stability to the shoe while still being soft and comfy made Giesswein the winning water resistant shoes for women. She also liked that the shoe came in all-black, which makes the logo less prominent and a better style for Europe.

Update: Now that Allbirds has sturdier, water repellent options, the Mizzles Runners and Mizzles Dashers have risen to the top for Michelle!

Jedd’s pick:   Allbirds Wool Runners I really liked how cushiony and light the Allbirds feel when walking. I love the overall feel of the materials against my skin. I was a little shocked that the size 11 fit my feet the best (I expected a smaller size).

I wish the toe box and the sole were larger but it’s a pretty minor complaint. I also liked the way the shoes looked compared to the others and the price was great as well.

Update: Our Top Choice Waterproof Running Shoes for Europe

Fall europe shoes - Columbia waterproof running shoes for Europe

Columbia Waterproof Shoes

Our wool walking shoes served us well for casual wear in Europe. Despite being fairly easy to clean, we felt we shouldn’t wear them on muddy hikes because we wanted to keep them nice. And since we like to stay active–with hikes, work outs, and really long walks–we found we really needed an additional pair of shoes for our Fall Europe travels.

We both ended up with waterproof running shoes (or trail shoes) from Columbia.

Columbia bought Montrail, which specializes in sturdy shoes for outdoor activities . They’re perfect for running or walking in the rain. They have good traction for slippery surfaces. And they keep your feet dry while at the same time providing breathability .

The down side of these waterproof shoes is they’re more bulky and somewhat stiff, especially compared to our comfy and light-weight wool runners. That being said, a traditional waterproof hiking shoe would be even more bulky and heavy. Not to mention those big hiking shoes seem out of place for most situations, like you should be on a safari. For this reason, the waterproof running shoe is a good compromise between a casual walking shoe and a sturdy hiking shoe .

To be honest, we ended up wearing the Columbia waterproof running shoes more than our wool sneakers on our Europe trip. Which would I rather lounge in on the airplane? Definitely the wool sneakers. But if we could only take one pair of shoes to Europe in Autumn, it would probably be the running shoes.

Montrail/Columbia comes out with new waterproof shoes each season. Michelle found her black pair on close out sale, so the specific shoe is no longer available. However, we highly recommend browsing the latest footwear at Columbia.

What to know about wool shoes and sneakers

The choice to buy wool shoes is more than a question of Vessi vs. Allbirds, Merino shoes, or other alternatives. Are wool shoes really right for you? These FAQs can help you decide.

Can wool shoes get wet? Yes, wool is fine getting wet. Water naturally beads on wool. It also helps regulate the temperature around your feet if water were to get inside the shoe. That said, they’re not technically “waterproof.”

Should you wear socks with wool shoes? It’s up to you! We wear ours with socks for extra warmth and comfort. But they’re also soft enough to go without socks.

Do Allbirds wear out quickly? One trade-off to the easy comfort of these shoes is they are not as sturdy as other great walking shoes. Results vary but you may want to consider a sturdier wool shoe if you plan to wear them heavily or on more rugged terrain.

How to clean Allbirds/merino wool: To keep wool shoes clean and smelling fresh, first read the label, as some shoes must be hand washed. Remove insoles and laces and brush off any dirt. If machine-washable, you can wash the shoes using a mild detergent (no bleach) in a linen bag with cold water, on the delicate cycle. Hand wash the soles and laces. Air dry everything.

Final Thoughts

When considering what travel shoes to wear in winter, we can see why merino wool runners are so popular. We can also see why companies like Vessi are on the rise, taking water resistant walking shoes to a new level by adding waterproofing and breathability to modern, urban styles.

Still, with Allbirds pricing and excellent return policy, it’s no wonder they lead the market in this category.

We wish more shoe companies would offer this kind of functionality to their casual designs. Stylish, casual shoes are rarely weather-resistant nor comfortable enough for long walks.

Do you have a shoe that might fit our needs? We’d love to know what your favorite travel walking shoe is. Especially if it can handle fall/winter travel. Let us know in the comments below.

None of them would look good if you want to look urbane and are traveling to a European city. These shoes yell “tourist,” and they make a person appear goinky. I will be in Paris and Milan next month, and I cannot imagine wearing these shoes at dinner or out having cocktails. Why must we all look like we’re out hiking or kayaking? What has happened to looking sharp and stylish? Now, we all want to look alike in some outdoorsy uniform. It’s sad. Conformity has taken over.

I wish you had included Marino‘s in your comparison. I love these shoes except for the lack of arch support as I am over 60.

I was looking for “Saturday shoes” that would be cozy, comfortable, have some support, and wearable to work on the odd day. Keeping my ankles warm was an added bonus. Thanks to your review, I settled on Allbirds new hightop sneakers. I picked them over the Mizzle high tops because of the colors available. I suspect this won’t be my last pair of them, though!

Sounds like a great choice for comfortable shoes. Hope they work well for you!

I’d love to know which keep your feet the coolest. My feet are hot and sweaty most of the time and I’m trying to find an everyday shoe to walk around in.

Hi Kathy. Thanks for your question. When we did this research, we were looking for the opposite – which shoes keep our feet warm in winter. However, merino wool is naturally good at keeping feet dry, including if you’re sweaty, so many of the wool shoes could work for you. (For hot climate walking shoes, I would check out Allbirds tree runners .) Everyone’s feet are different, so consider taking advantage of the return policies (listed above) to find out which works best for you.

I ordered and used a pair of Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles. They’re a comfortable shoe but they started falling apart after six months of wear. The sole separated from the body on both shoes, and they developed holes wear the body meets the sole, also on both shoes.

While they’re nice, it should be noted that their quality is not high. Especially for $115 shoes.

Thanks for sharing your experience. How often did you wear them? Did you run in them? I typically have to change out my running shoes every six months due to normal wear and tear anyway, but perhaps not to this extent. The Columbia shoes are sturdy and have held up well long term, though they’re not made with sustainable materials like Allbirds.

II have same experience, but even less time. I purchased ballerina flats and sneakers. The the flats, I bought over the summer and didn’t start to wear them until the spring. Wearing them about 5x and they started getting holes over the toes. I contacted Allbirds and they said it depends on my feet how fast they wear… they would not consider even to make improvements in the future…. I was not asking for a refund or replacement. During this process I also tried to contact them online or review their products. It is only possible to do so within about 30 days of purchase. 95$ is a lot to pay for 30 days wear of shoes. Geisswein aren’t as soft/ have more structure but so far the sneakers i have are more durable than the allbirds. Will try the flats too – but after the last discussion with Allbirds

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thank you for this review. Pretty interesting! You’re right, these wool runners are on the rise. Here in France, there’s a new company (Ubac) which offers wool runners mainly produced locally and made from recycled material. I do like the idea and reviews are ok. I’m going to try them. One of my friends teeenage boy wears Giesswein runners on a daily basis. They’re having a hard time with him whatever the weather or season but these runners hold on and on like forever. He loves them!

Thanks for stopping by the blog and sharing your thoughts, Gaelle!

Hey, did you actually ended up wearing any of those shoes across Europe and are they still holding strong?

Hi Kat. Thanks for your question. Yes, we wore the shoes in Croatia in Italy for two months. They all held up but we found the Columbia sneakers to be most durable and less likely to show stains compared to the wool ones.

How about comparing the new Allbirds Mizzles which are more weather resistant?

Mathew, thanks for the tip! These came out after our Fall/Winter Europe trip, but the new features on the Mizzles look like they’d push Allbirds even higher. Perhaps we’ll try them in the near future and report back.

Best Overall

Adidas cloudfoam pure 2.0 running shoes.

 Amazon

  • Cushioning 4 /5
  • Responsiveness 3.5 /5
  • Blister Protection 4.5 /5

Ready out of the box

Hard-wearing and easy to clean

Reasonable price point

Limited color choices

If you’re looking for an everyday, running-inspired sneaker that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker. Made especially for women, they feature a breathable, foot-hugging textile upper and a combined Cloudfoam midsole and outsole. We found the latter so comfortable that we likened wearing them to having our feet cradled by a cloud and reported no rubbing or irritation even though we wore them for extended periods without socks. The shoes have laces and score sustainability points by utilizing high-performance recycled materials.

We found them impressively durable, with no noticeable wear or odor even after all three test wears. The soles got a little bit dirty, but we were able to clean them with a wipe of a damp cloth. As for the price tag, we were astonished when we discovered how affordable these sneakers are—our tester would happily have paid three times the price for the quality and comfort experienced. The shoes come in neutral colors and full and half sizes from 5 to 12. We found that they fit perfectly and were true to size.

Superga Classic Sneaker

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Sturdily built

Timeless style

Huge choice of sizes and colors

Not the best for all-day wear

First launched in 1925, the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker has become an emblem of Italian style inspired by ladies’ tennis shoes. Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up.

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Choose one of many gorgeous pastel colors, from classic white to violet or light blue.

Best Walking

New balance women's 574 core sneaker.

New Balance

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Wear well for extended periods

Sturdy, reliable construction

Variety of sizes

Sizing can be tricky

The New Balance 574 Core Sneaker wins our vote as an easy, neutral choice that’s well-made and superbly comfortable. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support.

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

On Running Women's Cloudrift Shoe

  • Comfort 4.3 /5

Sleek, statement-making aesthetic

Easily fit into luggage

Key functional elements

Only available in regular fit

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole.

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Mesh upper, unspecified mid- and outsole | Sustainability: 35 percent recycled materials

Best Sandals

Keen women's elle backstrap sandal.

  • Quality 4.8 /5

Provide stable ride

Cute and casual aesthetic

Reduced environmental impact

Relatively expensive

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort.

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Best Hiking Sandals

Chaco women's zx2 classic sandal.

Lets you dial in the perfect fit

Handles demanding use

Toe loop may cause discomfort at first

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired.

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

Best for the Office

Olukai leather sneakers.

  • Value 4.8 /5

The right balance between rigidity and flex

Two-way heel

Easy to maintain

Back tab may bump against the Achilles tendon

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Leather upper, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Not listed

Most Sustainable

Allbirds women's plant pacers.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Wear in quickly

Cushioned fit

Not in love with the color

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag.

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

Sizes: 5 to 11 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Plant leather upper, SweetFoam midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Made from plant-based or recycled materials

Best Splurge

Frankie4 australia women's winnie ii white suede shoes.

  • Comfort 5 /5

Upscale, slightly retro style

Adjustable fit

Zero breaking-in period required

Some more colors would be nice

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing.

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

Sizes: 6 to 13 | Materials: Leather upper, rPET foam lining, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Lining made from recycled plastic bottles

TripSavvy / Morgan Ashley Parker

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day.

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

TripSavvy / Taylor Fox

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear.

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles.

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced.

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes.

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability.

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

TripSavvy / Anna Popp

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal.

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes.

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder.

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively.

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly.

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers.

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

The Best Walking Shoes For Seniors To Keep You Active And Moving

Finding the best walking shoes for seniors is not just about comfort, but also health and safety. “As we age, the risk of falling is greater,” says Dr. Bruce Pinker, podiatrist and foot surgeon at Progressive Foot Care . “Falling can mean a fractured leg, hip or ankle, and this can increase the risk of morbidity and mortality.” For that reason, seniors need especially stable footwear since balance declines with age. Based on our research and Dr. Pinker’s advice, we selected the SAS Mesh Walking Sneaker as the best walking shoes for seniors overall. Others shoes, such as the New Balance 928v3 and Saucony Omni Walker 3 , also stood out for their impressive stability features.

Finding the best walking shoes for seniors is crucial, not just for comfort, but for safety and ... [+] health.

Ahead, we rounded up all of the best walking shoes for seniors, whether you're looking for something to help with balance issues, provide comfort during long walks or slip on and off easily for errands.

  • Best Walking Shoes For Balance Problems: New Balance 928v3
  • Most Comfortable Walking Shoes For Seniors: Hoka Transport
  • Best Slip-On Walking Shoes For Seniors: On Cloud 5
  • Best Walking Shoes For Plantar Fasciitis : Vionic 23Walk Classic Shoe

Best Walking Shoes For Seniors Overall

Podiatrist-approved comfort and support, sas mesh walking sneaker.

Sizes:  4.5 to 12 (women’s), 6 to 15 (men’s) |  Weight:  10 ounces (women’s), 16 ounces (men’s) |  Cushion:  Moderate |  Closure Type:  Laces

Like all SAS shoes, the mesh walking sneaker is “orthopedically designed to provide added stability and support for elderly individuals or those needing added support,” says Dr. Pinker. “They are all well-constructed and durable with shock absorption, which aids in ambulation.” The upper is balanced with a mix of leather and mesh (the ideal combination for resilience and breathability), and the footbed is antimicrobial and feels cool even in hot weather. In addition to getting Dr. Pinker’s approval, it’s also a Medicare-approved shoe for diabetics.

Best Walking Shoes For Balance Problems

Locked-in feel at the heel.

New Balance

New Balance 928v3

Sizes:  5 to 13 (women’s), 7 to 16 (men’s) |  Weight:  10.9 ounces (women’s), 15.5 ounces (men’s) |  Cushion:  Moderate |  Closure Type:  Laces or hook and loop

If you’re looking for a shoe to help with your (or a loved ones’) balance, this pair from New Balance is loaded with features to support and protect feet. The PU foam footbed is firm yet forgiving, and the rubber outsole is grippy in all conditions. For a little more structure, the back of the foot is cradled in New Balance’s stability post system, which locks your heel in place and prevents excess movement. Also great: You can customize the fit with narrow, standard, wide, X-wide and XX-wide sizes. And if you struggle to bend down to tie your shoes, this model also comes in a version with a hook and loop closure instead of laces.

Most Comfortable Walking Shoes For Seniors

Soft cushioning and quick-lace design, hoka transport.

Sizes:  5 to 11 (women’s), 7 to 15 (men’s) |  Weight:  9.10 ounces (women’s), 11.90 ounces (men’s) |  Cushion:  High |  Closure Type:  Quick-toggle lace

The Transport is a do-it-all sneaker and has been spotted on the celebrities and political figures (like Biden) because it is seriously comfy. While Hoka shoes aren’t specifically designed for seniors, you may be able to use these lifestyle shoes for your daily walking depending on your needs, says Pinker. Most significantly, this will be a great pick if you lean towards cushy comfort over rigid features. (Or if don’t feel like you need more stability from your shoes.) They have a quick-lace design for easy on and off, a Vibram sole for traction and a Gore-Tex liner to stay dry in the rain. Keep in mind they aren’t as supportive or stable as orthopedic shoes, so if you struggle with balance, you’d be better suited with a different pick.

Best Slip-On Walking Shoes For Seniors

Sleek design and lighweight design.

Sizes:  5 to 11 (women’s), 7 to 14 (men’s) |  Weight:  7.16 ounces (women’s), 8.81 ounces (men’s) |  Cushion:  Moderate |  Closure Type:  Slip-on

You can skip tying your laces and slide into these sporty shoes from On, thanks to their speed lacing system. This shoe has a sleek, minimalist profile but it is surprisingly supportive with a deep, molded heel cup. And at less than 9 ounces for both men’s and women’s models, the Cloud 5 is seriously lightweight and won’t weigh you down as you walk. Similar to the Hoka listed above, it won’t be sufficient for those that need extra assistance with balance, but it’s a solid everyday option for seniors looking for a shoe that both looks and feels good.

Best Walking Shoes For Plantar Fasciitis

Orthotic insole and firm heel counter.

Vionic Shoes

Vionic 23Walk Classic Shoe

Sizes:  5 to 13 (women’s), 7 to 14 (men’s) |  Weight:  13 ounces (women’s), 15 ounces (men’s) |  Cushion:  Moderate |  Closure Type:  Laces

Vionic, a podiatrist-approved shoe brand, are a favorite among regular walkers for their arch support and orthotic insoles. This model is specifically designed for walking and has a firm heel counter for added stability, which Dr. Pinker recommends for seniors. The cushioning is PU foam is stiffer and more stable than EVA foam, which is more common in athletic shoes. The 23Walk comes in multiple color options and has a water-resistant leather upper that’s more durable than mesh, although it may take a couple of miles to break in.

Best Stable Walking Shoes For Seniors

Holds your foot in place and prevents overpronation, saucony omni walker 3.

Sizes:  5 to 12 (women’s), 7 to 14 (men’s) |  Weight:  11.6 ounces (women’s), 12.9 ounces (men’s) |  Cushion:  High |  Closure Type:  Laces

Saucony's Omni Walker 3 carries a American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Approval because it is specifically designed for stability. Based on Pinker’s requirements, this shoe fits the needs of seniors: A strong heel counter firmly cradles the rear foot to reduce excessive motion, while the advanced cushioning system provides substantial shock absorption, minimizing the impact on joints during walking. But even with all these features to keep you balanced, it still feels light and springy on your foot. You can also trust these shoes on any surface, as the durable rubber outsole reduces the risk of slip and falls.

Best Cushioned Walking Shoes For Seniors

High foam for shock absorption, asics gel-nimbus 26.

Sizes:  5 to 13 (women’s), 7 to 16 (men’s) |  Weight:  9.17 ounces (women’s), 10.7 ounces (men’s) |  Cushion:  Maximum |  Closure Type:  Laces

The Gel-Nimbus 26 is a popular running shoe from Asics, but it’s just as worthwhile for daily walks as it is for runs. While it doesn’t have any stability features, it has plenty of cushioning for a soft landing. And it may just have the best shock absorption of any shoe on this list because there’s PureGel technology under the heel, which serves as an added layer of protection. Also great: The knit tongue is soft and padded and the upper is flexible so you won’t get any points of friction or rubbing on the ankle.

How We Chose The Best Walking Shoes for Seniors

Footwear is a highly personal choice, so our recommendations take many aspects into consideration: Product quality, user reviews and the dozens of specifications of each shoe. To determine the best walking shoes for seniors, we also consulted with Dr. Bruce Pinker, a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon at Progressive Foot Care in New York. He has extensive experience working with senior and diabetic patients.

Once we narrowed down a list of brands and models that fit our criteria, we considered factors like cushioning, stability, grip, ease of use and overall comfort. Customer reviews from seniors were also crucial in our decision-making process. All the products on our list have at least 4 out of 5 stars across multiple retailers.

What To Look For In Walking Shoes For Seniors

When choosing walking shoes for seniors, consider the following:

When shopping for walking footwear, consider two options: orthopedic shoes and lifestyle shoes. “Orthopedically designed means the footwear is very stable, composed of durable uppers for long-term usage and added traction on the outsoles to help prevent falling, and has well-cushioned midsoles and insoles for added comfort and support,” says Dr. Pinker. This includes options like the SAS Mesh Walking Sneaker and Vionic 23Walk Classic Shoe .

Lifestyle shoes, on the other hand, are designed with function and style in mind, and may not be as supportive. (The Hoka Transport and On Cloud 5 are two examples.) These can still be solid options for many seniors who do not struggle with balance issues and want something a bit more casual and modern.

The insole, which is often removable, is the part of the shoe that your footbed rests on. No matter which design you choose, look for shoes with supportive insoles that conform to the foot's shape, providing arch support and reducing pressure on the heel and ball of the foot. Some shoes like the Vionic 23Walk Classic Shoe come with podiatrist-approved, orthotic insoles, while others like the New Balance 928v3 can accommodate custom insoles.

The midsole refers the the cushioning part of the shoe—the foam that you can see on the side profile. The midsole should have good shock absorption properties—like squishy foam or pockets of gel or air under the heel. “Shock absorption helps reduce the impact of walking on the feet,” says Dr. Pinker. “With added shock absorption, ambulating can be more comfortable and enjoyable for seniors.”

You should also pay special attention to the heel. A wider heel is more stable, and a firm heel counter (the part of the shoe located at the back of the heel) will add rear-foot support and prevent the back of the shoe from collapsing inward.

The outsoles of shoes are especially important for seniors, as it is what will keep you firmly planted to the ground. The best shoes for seniors will have “added traction (grip) on the outsoles to help prevent slippage,” says Dr. Pinker. Some outsoles may be labeled as non-slip, while others use durable rubber like Vibram, which is known to be incredibly sticky and high-quality.

What Shoes Are Best For The Elderly?

The best shoes for the elderly are those that combine comfort and stability. They should have a non-slip sole, a supportive insole and a cushioned midsole. For those with limited mobility, the closure system should be simple, ideally with Velcro or slip-on designs. Additionally, lightweight and breathable materials help keep the feet comfortable throughout the day.

What Are The Best Walking Shoes Recommended By Podiatrists?

Finding walking shoes is relatively personal, so podiatrists won’t recommend the same walking shoes for everyone. However, some brands, like Asics , Hoka , Saucony , and Vionic , have earned a Seal of Approval from the American Podiatric Medical Association for their commitment to creating shoes that promote foot health. Other brands certainly have great options, but may not meet the rigorous standards to achieve this mark.

In this article, podiatrist Dr. Bruce Pinker, personally recommended the SAS Mesh Walking Sneaker and New Balance 928v3 for seniors shopping for walking shoes. However, for walkers with flat feet or people looking for arch support , podiatrists have different recommendations to meet a certain foot type.

Which Hoka Shoes Are Best For Seniors?

Hoka shoes are great for seniors who need ample cushioning to absorb some of the impact to their joints, like knees, hips and ankles. The Transport (listed above) is a great option for seniors who don’t need many balance features but want a cushy, comfortable walking shoe. If you need more stability, the Hoka Arahi 7 has medial support in the shape of a J to keep your foot in line as you walk.

Other great options include the Hoka Bondi , which has stacks of foam but a decent firmness to it, and the Hoka Clifton GTX , which is soft, stable and waterproof.

They said her husband drowned snorkeling, but she saw him walk to shore. What happened?

reddit travel walking shoes

A Michigan woman and her family are suing a Maui resort , the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau after her husband died while snorkeling . She doesn’t believe it was a drowning.

Patricia and Ray Johnson, along with four friends, arrived at the Fairmont Kea Lani on Maui on the evening of Feb. 23, 2022, with plans to visit multiple islands over several weeks. This was the couple’s sixth time in Hawaii, and they had snorkeled the Hawaiian waters many times in the past, Patricia told USA TODAY.

On the morning of Feb. 25, some of the travelers, including Ray, went snorkeling around Wailea Beach, which fronts the resort, while Patricia opted to walk a trail that overlooks the beach. “I looked out, and I saw my husband and my friends or people out there,” she told USA TODAY. “I’m waving at him, and it hits me.” Patricia saw what looked like other snorkelers helping Ray.

She hurried down to the beach, but “things deteriorated quickly.” At first, Ray had his head above water and was returning to the beach, but then the 64-year-old fell onto his back with his head “snapped back at one point” and had to be pulled in. “I knew he was gone,” she said. 9-1-1 was called, but medical professionals failed to resuscitate Ray.

The autopsy report called Ray’s death an accidental drowning, which Patricia doesn’t believe.

“I was watching him come in, how could he be drowning?” According to her friends who were snorkeling with him, Ray was talking and also diving down under the water. At one point, he came up and said, “You gotta help me, I’m having trouble breathing,” and that’s when he decided to head back to shore. “I don’t think when people are drowning in a conditional manner, you’re going to be conversing,” she said.

What to do in Hawaii? Locals weigh in on if these popular spots are worth the hype

By a landslide, the leading cause of death for Hawaii tourists is drowning. And of ocean drownings for residents and visitors, the majority occur when snorkeling. While the ocean is powerful and unpredictable, some advocates, including the Johnsons, are trying to bring attention to a lesser-known medical condition that specifically poses risks to snorkelers and hasn’t gotten much attention over the years: Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema (ROPE).

The Johnson family believes ROPE is the real cause of Ray’s death, and the lawsuit alleges that Hawaii travel entities have failed to educate the public on ROPE, resulting in “an important public health concern,” according to the complaint filed in the Circuit Court of the First Circuit in the State of Hawaii in February 2024. The case should begin the fact-discovery process this week.

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau and Fairmont Kea Lani declined to comment on the lawsuit.

“I would like to see warnings out there,” Patricia told USA TODAY. “I truly believe my husband would still be here if we’d been warned.”

How is snorkeling dangerous?

Breathing through a snorkel tube is similar to pinching your nose and breathing in through your mouth. The resistance is immediate. ROPE occurs when the negative pressure on the lungs ends up sucking bodily fluids out of the capillaries and into the airways, according to Dr. Raj Dasgupta , a California-based pulmonologist.

“That snorkel resistance to airflow,” he said. “They want to breathe in but they have to breathe through that straw.”

Once fluid is in the lungs, it becomes difficult to breathe and people can experience hypoxia, or a lack of sufficient oxygen. “You slowly become weak then into a loss of consciousness,” Dasgupta said. Underlying health conditions such as heart and lung disease also increase someone’s predisposed risk for ROPE, he said.

If a person begins to feel shortness of breath, they may panic, causing more exertion, which can be life-threatening if they’re already suffering from a lack of oxygen, Dasgupta said.

Drowning by ROPE is “fundamentally different” than typical drowning when people are aspirating water or submerged and often showing signs of distress, the complaint said.

A lack of public awareness

In October 2017, after California woman – and avid swimmer and snorkeler – Nancy Peacock died while snorkeling in calm waters off the coast of Hawaii Island in a full-face mask and no signs of struggle, the Hawaii State Department created the Snorkeling Safety Sub-Committee to “address public concern about snorkel-related drownings.”

In a Snorkeling Safety Study led by the sub-committee, 50 different snorkels were tested, and the experts examined nonfatal and fatal drownings. The interim report released in July 2020 concluded that “ROPE-induced hypoxia is a factor in fatal and nonfatal snorkel drownings.” The study also had a survey conducted at Oahu’s most popular snorkeling spot, Hanauma Bay, but only 36 participants – mostly locals – were interviewed due to the islands being closed to travel during the pandemic.

The high altitude from air travel impacting someone’s lungs may be a contributing factor, but there wasn’t enough evidence in the study to confirm this. Since getting to Hawaii requires at least a five-hour flight, it’s possible that fatigue and stress from flying could play a role in someone’s risk of drowning by ROPE.

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority funded the study to “develop appropriate safety messages.” However, as of April 2024, there have not been any public-facing messages on any of the official Hawaii tourism websites. Information cards have been passed out to most Kauai and Oahu tour boat operators, the subcommittee said. Although the study is preliminary and not robust in terms of participants and even calls for further investigation, it is the only one to explore ROPE in snorkelers so far.

“Why aren’t we in Hawaii letting people know?” said Jay Stuemke, an Oahu-based attorney who filed the complaint on the Johnsons’ behalf. “Pamphlets in rooms, apps, websites, in-room videos, all types of mechanisms to warn people. It’s an easy enough thing to do. We believe had they done that, Ray would still be alive today as well as many other people.”

Snorkeling safety tips

◾ Always snorkel with a buddy, and if you can’t swim, don’t snorkel.

◾ Choose a snorkel with a wide opening and no constrictions in the mouthpiece.

◾ Learn to use the snorkel device before venturing out into water that’s too deep to stand in.

◾ If you feel shortness of breath, stay calm, remove the snorkel and get out of the water immediately, Dasgupta said.

Did humans evolve to chase down prey over long distances?

Outrunning prey over long distances is an efficient method of hunting for humans, and it was widely used until recently, according to an analysis of ethnographic accounts

Humans have an exceptional ability to run long distances

Before the advent of rifles, many cultures around the world hunted by pursuing prey over long distances. The energy gained by hunting in this way can far exceed the energy spent running, researchers have found, strengthening the argument that humans evolved for endurance running.

“I think our paper makes a very strong case for its importance in the past,” says Eugene Morin at Trent University in Canada. “Something that was thought to be marginal is now shown to be a common strategy worldwide.”

Is running or walking better for you? Here’s what the science says

Humans are exceptional endurance athletes, capable even of outrunning animals such as horses over distances of tens of kilometres. We have muscles built for stamina rather than power, and can keep cool by sweating a lot.

“These traits can only be explained in the context of running,” says Morin. “And there are not many reasons for humans to run for long distances other than hunting.”

It has been suggested that humans evolved to chase prey until the prey became too exhausted or overheated to run any further.

Keep up with advances in archaeology and evolution with our monthly newsletter.

This idea, known as the endurance running hypothesis, has been hotly debated. One criticism is that running uses a lot of energy compared with walking . Another is that there are hardly any reports of modern humans using this hunting technique, suggesting it isn’t very efficient.

So, Morin and Bruce Winterhalder at the University of California, Davis, first estimated the energy expended to catch prey during persistence hunting versus the energy gained by catching prey of various sizes . For all but the smallest prey, running beats walking, according to their modelling.

That’s because running doesn’t use much more energy per kilometre but can greatly shorten the duration of a chase. Running 4 kilometres to catch an animal is more efficient than walking 8 kilometres, for instance.

In practice, walking wouldn’t usually work at all, says Morin, because endurance hunting often relies on pushing prey so hard that they overheat. “In most cases, this requires running,” he says.

Morin and Winterhalder also searched through accounts of various peoples written by anthropologists or missionaries from the 1500s onwards. They found around 400 descriptions of endurance hunting from all over the world, most from before 1850.

For example, an account of the Beothuk people of Newfoundland describes a lengthy pursuit of a stag. “The stag at first easily outstrips his pursuer, but after a run of four or five miles he stops and is by and bye [sic] overtaken; again he sets off, and again he is overtaken; again, and again, he is overtaken,” it says. Another account describes endurance hunting of herds of goats in Hawaii.

Running over snow

To Morin’s surprise, there were also accounts from colder regions, whereas previously known examples were from hot, arid regions. “We hunted the moose by running him down on snowshoes, and we could run all day, such as wolves,” an individual of the Gwichʼin people of Alaska and Canada is reported as saying.

The ideal conditions for this were thick snow with a crust strong enough to support a person wearing snowshoes but not strong enough to support heavier prey, says Morin.

He also points out that being able to run long distances used to be a highly valued ability, with numerous accounts of long-distance running races being part of the culture of peoples all around the world.

“It’s hard to argue with the results of their analysis, which clearly support other anatomical, physiological, archaeological and genetic evidence that humans evolved to run long distances to hunt,” says Daniel Lieberman at Harvard University, one of the proponents of the endurance running hypothesis. “Until the invention of modern technologies, persistence hunting by endurance running was widespread and very successful.”

Who is Ancestor X? The biggest mystery in human evolution

“I think their review is super interesting,” says Cara Wall-Scheffler at Seattle Pacific University, who has been critical of the hypothesis . But she also points out that endurance running is mentioned in just 2 per cent of all the accounts of hunting the study looked at.

Henry Bunn at the University of Wisconsin-Madison says he remains sceptical of the hypothesis. Bunn thinks the method wouldn’t have worked in the bushlands where humans evolved, where hunters would quickly lose sight of fleeing prey. He also thinks endurance hunters would catch mostly young or old animals, but his team found teeth from butchered animals in their prime at one 2-million-year-old site.

On the basis of similar accounts of hunting, Wall-Scheffler recently argued that women took part in hunts much more often than thought . Morin says there are “copious” examples of women and girls taking part in running races, but he and his colleagues found that only 2 per cent of the accounts of endurance hunting they looked at describe women doing it.

New Balance — a brand that has proved time and again to be at the top of its game in crafting versatile, stylish, and above all, supportive shoes for everything from walking tours to trail runs.

Fortunately, the brand is here to help you prepare for your upcoming spring and summer adventures by hosting a secret sale at Amazon with certain styles starting at prices as low as $50. No matter if you’re looking to up your streetwear shoe game or are on the hunt for sneakers that can take you from the gym to the trails to city streets, we’ve rounded up the 10 best pairs to choose from while they’re marked down — but don’t wait too long, deals this good aren’t going to last forever.

New Balance Men’s 608 V5 Casual Comfort Cross Trainer

No matter what activities you have on the agenda for your next vacation, these best-selling cross trainers are the perfect shoes for the job — and right now, they’re on sale for up to 21 percent off. You’ll be able to get plenty of wear out of them in your day-to-day life since they’re well-suited for wearing to the gym or walking around town. Shock-absorbing midsoles and mild compression will keep your feet feeling fresh after long travel days as well. Durable leather uppers are built to last, so you won’t soon have to replace these sneakers, plus, they’ve earned a staggering 58,400-plus five-star ratings that speak to their comfortable and reliable fit.

New Balance Women’s 515 V3 Sneakers

Supportive sneakers are non-negotiable during active vacations, but if you don’t want to be forced to ruin your outfit with a pair of running shoes, this stylish selection from New Balance will solve that issue in a heartbeat. The interior of these shoes is fitted with EVA foam midsoles that offer optimal cushioning no matter how long you’re on your feet, and reliable rubber outsoles offer impressive traction on rain-slicked surfaces. Pair them with leggings, sneakers, or even a maxi dress, but no matter how you style them, you’ll always feel confident and comfortable.

New Balance Men’s Fresh Foam Roav V1 Classic Sneakers

Designed as running shoes, these lightweight and breathable sneakers are also an impeccable choice to pack for your travels considering the foam insoles are so soft you’ll feel like you’re walking on a cloud. The neutral design of these shoes makes them well-suited for a wide range of travelers, and they even feature reinforced outsoles that are equipped to take on extended wear without breaking down. A 100 percent mesh exterior will keep your feet cool during even the sweatiest travel days, and right now you can snag the shopper-loved shoes for as little as $60 at Amazon.

New Balance Women’s 608 V5 Cross Trainers

Chunky dad shoes have come in and out of style over the years, so if you’re looking to dip your toe in the waters of this trend, why not pick up this pair of cross trainers from New Balance while they’re on sale for 25 percent off? Gone are the days of waking up with achy feet after racking up miles while sightseeing because the lightweight foam insoles of these shoes offer essential cushioning that provides all-day support. The midsoles also provide gentle compression to keep your feet firmly in place while taking in the views of your destination, and highly flexible outsoles give essential freedom of movement while remaining incredibly packable.

New Balance Men’s 520 V8 Running Shoes

You don’t have to be a runner to get ample use out of these ultra-sleek sneakers during all of your spring and summer travels, and the fact that they’re on sale for just $50 is icing on the cake. Breathable mesh uppers secure these shoes as the perfect selection for the warmer months, while lightweight midsoles and insoles enhance both the comfort and flexibility of your new go-to sneakers. No-sew uppers will feel smooth and well-constructed against your feet, and padded heels offer impressive comfort straight from the box.

New Balance Women’s Fresh Foam 510 V6 Trail Running Shoes

Any hikes or trail running excursions in the coming months instantly call for you to snag this pair of sturdy, highly cushioned sneakers while they’re on sale for as low as $50, so you can reap the benefits of a lightweight shoe that can truly do it all. The toe boxes of these shoes are uniquely designed to provide extra protection to your feet when encountering rocks and other rough terrain, while lugged outsoles offer all the traction you need no matter where you’re headed. Whether you’re running, walking, or hiking, these shoes are an impeccable choice for active travelers.

New Balance Men’s Slip Resistant 626 V2 Industrial Shoes

Cobblestone streets are notoriously more slippery than pavement when it rains, so if you’re headed to a European destination this spring, don’t forget to pick up these slip-resistant sneakers before you head out of town. Compression-molded insoles create a perfect fit with ease, while non-marking soles offer the ultimate traction (even if you’re trekking the hilly city of Lisbon after the rain). They may have initially been designed as work shoes, but why limit the use of these protective and incredibly comfy shoes?

New Balance Women’s 997H V1 Sneakers

Sporty, stylish, and endlessly versatile, these colorful sneakers will be a hit among your fellow travelers. Now on sale for 26 percent off, these vintage-inspired shoes blend streetwear with comfort, resulting in footwear that can be paired with every outfit in your suitcase without causing blisters, irritation, or discomfort. Cloud-like insoles make sightseeing a dream, while a durable construction ensures these shoes are built to last. Plus, with dozens of colorways available, you can trust that your style will shine through, even with a pared-down travel wardrobe.

New Balance Men’s DynaSoft Nitrel V5 Trail Running Shoes

Take on the trails in style this season with the multi-purpose DynaSoft Nitrel sneakers from New Balance, which can be worn on walking tours, intensive hikes, and even trail runs without ever needing to swap out your footwear. These shoes are designed with an eco-friendly touch, boasting a base made from renewable resources that aim to reduce the brand’s carbon footprint without sacrificing superior comfort. Breathable mesh uppers keep your feet cool while limiting sweat (and odor), while sturdy treads provide essential traction for off-road and on-road adventures. In short, these are the only shoes you’ll need to pack for your next vacation.

New Balance Women’s Nergize V3 Cross Trainer

Slip into your travels this spring with these best-selling cross trainers that, while they do have laces, are easy to slide on and off whether you’re rushing through TSA or hurrying out of the hotel to meet up with your tour group. A convenient strap at the heel of each shoe contributes to its smooth removal, while memory foam insoles are about as comfortable as they get for racking up miles. And if you want to head to the gym or sneak in a run during your vacation, fear not, these simple shoes are a fit for that job as well.
