1. Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? You can! At Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana , families can live like SpongeBob SquarePants in their very own Pineapple Suite.The spacious, two-bedroom, three-bathroom suite looks like a pineapple on the outside, but has full amenities on the inside. There are also swim-up suites and personal plunge pool suites available at this Punta Cana all-inclusive resort.

The kids will go crazy for Aqua Nick, a water park and splash pad with waterslides and a tipping splash bucket; the resort also has a lazy river and several pools. There’s a kids’ club for ages 4 to 12, a sports hub, several onsite restaurants, and a spa. Be on the lookout for your favorite characters, including the pups from Paw Patrol and Dora the Explorer!

2. Club Med Punta Cana

We are big fans of Club Med, including Club Med Punta Cana . Head to the resort’s private beach and grab a drink or snack at the nearby bar when kids get hungry. The resort has three full-service restaurants, plus an area specifically for parents who need to prepare food for infants. The resort continues to keep little ones in mind with Baby Club Med (ages 4 to 23 months), but it also caters well to the older kids. Petit Club Med, Mini Club Med and Passworld separate children ages 2 to 17 into spaces with games and activities just for them. Be sure to visit the Circus School, where lessons in trapeze, juggling and tightrope walking are offered, or better yet, try Creactive by Cirque do Soleil.

Launched in 2015, the program allows guests to learn the techniques of all circus acts— aerialists, acrobats, jugglers, high bungee jumpers and even musicians. Family suites, babysitting services (until 1 a.m.) and multiple pools (including one just for kids) round out our favorite aspects of this all-inclusive Punta Cana resort.

3. Melia Caribe Beach Resort

With eight outdoor pools, an adventure area for children with zip-lining, and climbing walls, plus evening shows for adults and kids, the  Melia Caribe Beach Resort  in Punta Cana has it all. This all-inclusive resort has more than 1,100 guestrooms and suites of all sizes, with mini-bars, private balconies and more.

Family Junior Suites are even better, with extra amenities like PlayStation consoles , baby kits, mini-fridges and bunk beds creating an inviting space for guests of all ages. This all-inclusive resort also offers two buffet-style restaurants, 11 specialty a la carte eateries and 14 bars for adults to enjoy while kids are at the kids’ and teens’ clubs, open to children ages 8 months to 14 years.

4. Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana

Families with teens rejoice: the all-inclusive Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana has a Core Zone Teens Club for ages 13 to 17, open from 9 a.m. to midnight. While your teen plays games and makes new friends, parents can drop off young kids at the Explorer’s Club and head to a 5,400-square-foot spa that features more than 30 treatments. If kids want to join in on the pampering, there are services available for ages 6 to 16.

The entire family can then relax by one of the pools or on the beach in one of the dozens of lounge chairs. When kids get hungry, stop at one of the seven onsite restaurants, or order room service to your tropical view guestroom and dine al fresco on your private, furnished balcony.

5. The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real

The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real is a resort within a resort in Punta Cana. The larger Paradisus resort created this smaller boutique property with families specifically in mind. The Kids Zone, for ages 1 to 12, offers cribs for little ones, an adventure park with a climbing wall and bounce castle, and evening karaoke, magic and puppet shows just for them.

Additionally, families receive their own private concierge to utilize during their stay when they book one of the 80 Family Concierge Suites. With a special check-in area, Kids Kits upon arrival, connecting rooms, turndown service with snacks , 24-hour room service, in-room video game consoles and more upon request, families are really treated to paradise at this all-inclusive Punta Cana resort.

6. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana

With suites that can sleep up to 10, large and multi-generational families will find the all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana an easy choice in the mix of kid-friendly hotels in Punta Cana . Plus, the expansive resort features 12 pools (one with a kids’ waterslide), a mini-golf course, the Arcade Center with games for teens, the Extreme Center with a rock climbing wall and the Little Big Club, where little ones can sing songs and play with their favorite characters, such as Barney, Bob the Builder, Thomas the Tank Engine and more.

And while the kids are busy, parents can get their own game on at the casino, with its 45,000 square feet of tables and slots. The entire family can regroup for dinner at one of the nine restaurants at the resort, topping off the evening at Ice Cone, where fresh ice cream treats are made right onsite.

7. Lopesan Costa Bavaro Resort, Spa & Casino

Opened in 2019, the Lopesan Costa Bavaro Resort is the European brand’s first resort in the Caribbean. The cool, contemporary design found throughout the expansive property gives off a casual, yet luxurious vibe that’s perfect for families; kids can feel comfortable, but parents don’t have to sacrifice on stylish guestrooms. There are numerous pools throughout this beachfront resort and because the resort is located in the Costa Bavaro section of Punta Cana, the Caribbean waters are calm and ideal for the youngest of visitors.

The Lopesan offers an additional section of the resort called The Boulevard. This area is somewhat removed from the main areas of the resort, but offers a ton of activities. There’s a water park and a kids’ club for ages 4 to 12, with a small stage for performances. A larger indoor theater offers nightly entertainment the whole family will enjoy. For an extra cost, families can also enjoy the bowling alley, arcade and escape room at The Boulevard.

8. Grand Sirenis Punta Cana Resort

This all-inclusive Punta Cana resort offers one of the largest water parks in all of the Caribbean. Perfect for all ages, the water park has a splash pad and spray jets for ages 4 to 11, and for ages 2 to 4, there are animal statues and water sprinklers in a pool area just for them. Big kids will love the four-lane speed waterslides, tube slides and free-fall twister. The Grand Sirenis Punta Cana Resort is perfect for LEGO -loving families, too, as there is a LEGO building zone in the kids’ club, along with plenty of arts and crafts activities.

This beachfront resort offers family suites (accommodating up to four people) with a private bedroom area for parents and a separate living room area with two sleeper sofas for the kids.

9. Now Larimar Punta Cana

Located along the Caribbean Sea, the all-inclusive Now Larimar Punta Cana offers upscale accommodations with family-friendly features. Deluxe Family Rooms have space for up to three adults and three children (or four adults and two children), with private balconies and two bathrooms. At the Explorer’s Club, kids ages 3 to 12 will enjoy arts and crafts, treasure hunts, video games , water play areas and more, with activities offered until 9:30 p.m. so parents can enjoy a romantic dinner at one of nine restaurants.

For teens ages 13 to 17, the Core Zone club is full of fun just for them, from Ping Pong, basketball and table games to a snack bar with non-alcoholic drinks and weekly bonfires on the beach.

10. Occidental Punta Cana

The Occidental Punta Cana is located on Punta Cana’s Playa El Cortesito beach, where families can enjoy windsurfing, water polo, scuba diving, snorkeling or kayaking, or visit one of the resort’s three pools, including a kids’ pool. There are 11 restaurants (seven of which are a la carte) included at this all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana. There’s a playground area and a kids’ club for children ages 4 to 12; kids will also love the nightly kids’ show at the mini disco theater.

This all-inclusive Punta Cana resort can easily accommodate a family of five. The Family Junior Suite features two double beds or one king bed in a private bedroom, and three sleeper sofas in the separate living room area.

11. Barcelo Bavaro Palace

At the all-inclusive Barcelo Bavaro Palace , families receive VIP treatment. The Family Club features three levels of accommodations for parents and children, with mini-bars stocked with milk, juice, cereal and snacks, kids’ beach kits with essentials for time on the sand, and free admission for each person to the onsite Pirates Islands Water Park.

Additionally, the resort includes 11 restaurants; four pools, including one just for kids; the Barcy Water Park, which is included with all-inclusive rates; a nighttime nursery open from 6 p.m. to midnight; and a special nightclub just for teens.

12. Hotel Riu Palace Bavaro

Located on the tropical beach of Arena Gorda in Punta Cana, the all-inclusive Hotel Riu Palace Bavaro is as luxurious as it is kid-friendly. Room service is offered 24 hours a day in all suites; children ages 4 to 12 have their own club for arts and crafts, games and more; water sports, like windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling are offered; and Wi-Fi is free throughout the entire resort (though we bet you won’t want to be connected to devices on this vacation!).

Children have their own pool, parents have their own spa and nightly entertainment, and the entire family will enjoy the five restaurants, plus the patisserie and ice cream parlor. Punta Cana resorts don’t cut any corners— especially this one!

13. Royalton Bavaro Resort & Spa

The  Royalton Bavaro Resort & Spa offers a ton of kids activities for families on a Punta Cana vacation. Teens will love the FlowRider surf simulator and the PlayStation Lounge at this all-inclusive, beachfront resort, and younger kids (ages 4 to 12) can have fun at the kids’ club, where they can play on the playground or create arts and crafts. There’s also a lazy river, mini-golf, cooking classes for little chefs and tons of water sports rentals.

The 24-hour room service option is great when you don’t feel like dining out. But when you do, there are eight restaurants, including buffets and a la carte options.

 Covid-19 has also shown us that our world sometimes needs a little break. While I don’t want to proclaim a completely sustainable blog post about Punta Cana excursions for families, I’d like to continue what I am already following for many years: protect our nature and especially our animals.

 That’s why this list of the best things to do in Punta Cana with a family doesn’t include any excursions, where animals live in captivity, are forced to participate in non-typal animal shows or are simply tortured by the number of tourists visiting and touching them every day.

 Therefore, you won’t find the typical animal activities in this list, which are usually featured when talking about what to do when traveling to Punta Cana with your family. All the dolphin shows incl. swimming with a dolphin, the manati park, the stingray and shark Marinarium and the Monkeyland are among these activities.

The post-Covid-19 situation in Punta Cana

The Dominican Republic was one of the countries surpassing the Covid-19 pandemic pretty early. Already at the end of 2021, the Dominican Republic lifted ALL restrictions, after traveling already has been possible since 2020.

The resorts are super-safe for families and also wandering around on your own outside of Punta Canas’ resorts is no problem if you avoid a few shady areas (such as “El Hoyo” in Bavaro) and the night hours between, let’s say, 11 pm and 5 am. But considering you’re traveling as a family to Punta Cana and are sleeping at night, this won’t be a problem.

You’re either with experienced guides or venturing in safe areas where most likely nothing is going to happen. Try different water activities at the beach

  Scuba Diving is not the typical Punta Cana excursion for families, but if you have some water-loving and adventure-focused teens (+ if you are a diver on your own), you might sign up for a test dive in Punta Cana, which could be the beginning of a new love relationship for your kids (as long as they are old enough).

 Even Punta Cana is for sure not a mecca for divers in the Caribbean, there are some interesting spots, especially some wrecks and reefs around Punta Cana and the beautiful underwater world of Isla Catalina and Isla Saona . Take a surf lesson in Macao

 Talking about new activities especially teens will love – if scuba diving in Punta Cana doesn’t call their immediate attention, how about surfing? 

 A little town called Macao just a quick ride north of Punta Cana is what can be considered the most popular surfing location in the east of the Dominican Republic. The area is perfect for beginners, as waves are usually always present, but not monstrously high. The ground is always covered with sand, so there are no reefs where you can graze your leg when falling from the board. In other words, Macao Beach is a perfect surfing beach for beginners and would be an ideal terrain to convince your teens of the love of surfing.

Playa Macao is also part of Punta Canas’ most beautiful beaches , so even if you are not surfing, it is worth a trip.

 As mentioned above in this article, we don’t support Punta Cana excursions for families with animals in captivity, such as swimming with the dolphins (or other activities we don’t want to mention here).  If visiting a waterfall is something you consider during your Punta Cana family vacation, I’d recommend you the following options: – Saltos de Anamuya if you don’t want to hike a lot, just relax in the natural waterfall swimming pools (not recommended on the weekend) – the waterfall Salto Socoa for a short hike (15 minutes) and plenty of space to splash around in the natural swimming pool (it is a bit more than a two-hour drive though) – Salto de la Jalda for a full-day Punta Cana adventure with older teens who love to hike (6-hour hike)

Choose a family all-inclusive resort with a water park

 Ok, this is not an activity by itself, but considering this will make your kids happy for the entire Punta Cana family vacation, it is a big deal: choosing an all-inclusive resort with a (huge) water park . 

 It is without question that most kids of all ages love water parks. The water slides are perfect for some action, the water playgrounds make younger kids happier and in general, most children love to romp for the entire day. 

 Even the water parks in Punta Cana might not compete with the biggest Florida theme parks, they are quite impressive. Royalton Punta Cana, Hyatt Ziva, Grand Sirenis , RIU Resort and Now Onyx are some of the hotels with the biggest waterparks in Punta Cana .  Hard Rock Punta Cana also added a water park recently to its property.

 Please note that most all-inclusive resorts don’t allow outside guests, so it is usually not possible to visit the water park just for a day when staying in another hotel.

Visit Punta Cana’s newest water attraction for families

 One of the newest things to do in Punta Cana with kids and particularly with teens is the Caribbean Lake Park. It is located in Downtown Bavaro and was just inaugurated in 2022. It is a compilation of various attractions which can either be booked separately or as a full-day ticket – similar to other theme parks in Punta Cana . Compared to other parks like Bavaro Adventure Park or La Hacienda Park, Caribbean Lake Park is completely water-based and therefore a perfect addition to this section of the best things to do with a family in the water.

 A Tibetan bridge, a floating circuit, zip lines, a doughnut ride and wakeboarding are just some of the attractions. The biggest draw for sure is the wakeboarding circuit, which is unique in Punta Cana and a great option for teens.   Dune buggy tours in Punta Cana are one of the most popular excursions in Bavaro , thanks to their combination of entertainment and action. Particularly interesting is the buggy tour as it includes a race track in an abandoned mine and the zipline, which consists of a hanging bridge and 6 cables, where the last one sends you full-speed right into the water – a highlight your kids will never forget.

 Do you remember why I don’t want to support tourist attractions in Punta Cana focusing on animals in captivity? Well, I have explained the reasons in the introduction of this Punta Cana family activity guide. But there is something much better anyway: watching animals from a respectful distance in their natural habitat.

 Exactly that’s what you can do when you are deciding on a whale-watching excursion in Punta Cana as your favorite thing to do with kids in Punta Cana. These huge mammals will definitely impress your kids and create long-lasting memories, making it one of the must things to do on a Punta Cana family vacation.

 The humpback whales are coming to the bay of Samaná (which is around a 1.5-hour drive away from Punta Cana, where you’ll board the whale watching vessel) every year between January and March . In the sheltered waters of the bay, they are giving birth to their babies and feeding them for the first weeks before heading back to the Atlantic Ocean.

   During the Punta Cana whale watching excursion , you will have plenty of opportunities to see the whales, it is more than common that you have at least a dozen sightings or more. If you are lucky, the whales are even going to swim right beside your boat.

  Montaña Redonda is a mountain with a spectacular 360-degree panorama surrounded by lush vegetation and untouched nature. What your kids will love at Montaña Redonda are the giant swings and cozy hammocks, both being set up right at the edge of the mountain, which allows for fantastic photo opportunities you can’t get anywhere else. This is a very affordable option to allow your kids some unique photos they later can share with their friends.

 You can visit Montaña Redonda either on a guided tour or a road trip . If you decide to go there on your own, you can either walk up (entrance fee approx. 2 USD) on a short but steep path (allow between 30 and 60 minutes to get to the top depending on your fitness level) or take one of the safari trucks (approximately 10 USD) which are waiting at the bottom of Montaña Redonda.

Punta Cana’s newest family attraction is Katmandu Park . It is one of those things to do in Punta Cana for families with a completely new concept, as they have transformed an old shopping mall (which was once the biggest in Punta Cana) into a theme park with a lot of fantasy-based attractions. The center of the story at Katmandu Parks are different realms, which are part of every attraction.

  Katmandu Park Punta Cana is great for older kids and teens who love fantasy games and interactive activities. Attractions include EtherQuest, Legend of the Desirata, Expedition Golf, Challenge of the Mad Mage, Voyage of the Fathom Wanderer, Wheel of Infinite Wonder, Quadagon and High Point Adventure. At least half of these attractions are indoors which makes it a great thing to do in Punta Cana for a family if it rains.

  Katmandu Park is not open yet, hence I can’t talk about this Punta Cana activity for families from my own experience. However, it is supposed to open around February 2023 and I hope to be able to visit during the remainder of the year.

W ith over 1,000 miles of coastline and some of the prettiest beaches in North America, the Dominican Republic is a popular beach destination. With convenient flights from the U.S. and Canada, Punta Cana is one of the most popular areas in the Dominican Republic. Most travelers head to an all-inclusive resorts during their trip to DR, making for an easy beachy getaway. However, there are several things to keep in mind. Here are the top things to know before visiting Punta Cana.

• Punta Cana International Airport PUJ is one of the largest airports in the Caribbean with service in-between 26 international destinations.
• Cabs can be expensive so arrange for a transfer before arriving
• Spanish isn’t necessary, though it’s nice to use some common phases.
• Changing money isn’t necessary however cash for tips is necessary.
• There are several resort areas in Punta Cana, like Bavaro, Cap Cana and La Romana.
• DR boasts 200 Beaches
• Nude Sunbathing Isn’t a Thing in DR
• The Dominican Republic features a National Park, perfect for an all-day excursion.
• Bottled Water is a Must in DR

How to Get to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the second-largest island in the Caribbean. It offers several international airports. After several trip to DR over the years, I am sharing the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

The Punta Cana International Airport

With service from several international carriers, including direct flights from Britain, France and South America. U.S. travelers will find American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

WiFi is available, and restrooms are located near the immigration line.

A valid passport with more than six months before expiration is required for your trip is required. e aren’t required to enter the country. A 30-day tourist visa will be stamped into your passport upon entry. The Dominican Republic Entry fee is included in your flight.

The Dominican Republic requires U.S. Passengers to fill out an online Immigration form before they arrive. Before my last trip in December 2023, my airline sent me a link (Delta Airlines).

On departure, U.S. residents can opt for the automated immigration lines. You will just scan your passport and pass through a gate.

The Punta Cana Airport features enhanced security measures with pat-downs. A TSA pre-check line isn’t available.

The departure area is fully air-conditioned and features a duty-free shop and another shop specializing in Dominican Republic products, like rum and cigars.

Find American fast food in the departures area, like Wendy’s, Sbarro, Nathan’s, Cinnabon and Baskin-Robbins. Also find a bar for pre-departure cocktails.

Find a small play structure for younger kids. The Punta Cana International Airport also features a nursing room.

Santo Domingo International Airport (SDQ) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Santiago International Airport (STI) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines and Jet Blue Airlines.

Resort Review: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

Airport transfers.

When leaving the arrivals hall at the Punta Cana International Airport, a line of cab drivers will greet you. I recommend arranging transportation with your resort or hotel before arriving. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

There are several transportation and tour counters in the area. I usually check in with my transportation company to find my driver. Often they are waiting a short distance from the airport and pull up after you arrive.

Most cars in the Dominican Republic are air-conditioned.

What Language is Used in the Dominican Republic

The Dominicans speak Spanish though most understand and speak some English. Knowing some basic Spanish is helpful, especially the basics.

Hola = Hello

Buenos Días = Good Morning

Buenos Noches = Good Night

Muchas Gracias = Thank you very much

What Money is  Used in the Dominican Republic

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (RD$). Though the U.S. Dollar is widely accepted. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Change will most likely be given in U.S. dollars. For those who want local currency, ATMs are located in hotel lobbies as well as the airport.

Credit Cards are widely accepted throughout the Dominican Republic. It’s advised to use a credit card for large purchases like lodging. Though use cash for souvenirs and small purchases. Tips are accepted and appreciated in DR from spa services to daily maid service.

Phone Service in the Dominican Republic

Since I travel internationally, I have a global plan through my U.S. carrier. When I land I just switch over to the local service provider. I just use my data to check email and messages. The provider I used throughout my trip to DR was Altice.

Most all-inclusive resorts offer extensive WiFi for their guests. Most of the time this service is included. This is one of the top things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Where to Stay in Punta Cana

Most resorts in the Punta Cana area are all-inclusive resorts. Travelers will find everything from luxurious and laid-back adult all-inclusives to family resorts with waterparks.

Some resorts are divided into an adults-only side with an adjoining family side, each with separate restaurants, pools and gathering places. Other resorts offer buildings dedicated to adults or families.

With several different resort areas in Punta Cana, visitors will choose from laid-back La Romana to buzzy Bavaro. Cap Cana boasts Juanilla Beach, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.

Near Punta Cana, Cap Cana boasts wide white sand beaches with lots of palm trees. A resort community, Cap Cana features the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana and the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana. Both of these properties opened in 2021 and offer a luxurious all-inclusive resort experience.

Nearby is Sanctuary Cap Cana, another luxury all-inclusive resort. Located on Juanillo Beach, it offers pristine white sand with mature palm trees.

Cap Cana is located just south of the Punta Cana International Airport. The Cap Cana Marina offers boat excursions. This area is ideal for watersports like kayaking, SUP boarding and sailing.

La Romana offers a quieter resort experience. It’s located west of the Punta Cana International Airport and along the Chavón River.

I stayed at the Hilton La Romana, an all-inclusive resort with tropical landscaping. It is close to Bayahibe, a resort town with shopping and dining. It is also the departure point for boat excursions to Isla Saona, part of the Parque National Cotubanama.

Bavaro features the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. It’s north of the Punta Cana International Airport and on the Atlantic Ocean.

Along this strip of beach, often called the Coconut Coast, resorts are shoulder-to-shoulder. The white sand beaches are the draw though some resorts offer bigger beaches than others so research is key.

Bavaro is quite busy. The resorts tend to be louder and the beaches busier.

Best Beaches in Punta Cana

With about 200 beaches in the Dominican Republic, it can be hard to choose. DR boasts 25 Blue Flag Beaches (more than the U.S.), known for their conservation and recycling efforts.

Macao Beach –Known for its surfing area.

Bavaro Beach –This beach extends for 30 miles and features many all-inclusive resorts. It is a favorite.

Juanillo Beach- -Exceptionally wide beach with mature palm trees. Since there are fewer resorts and many are gated, this beach is less crowded.

Bayahibe Beach –Located in the village and a frequent departure point for excursions to Soana Island.

Note : Nude sunbathing isn’t a common in the Dominican Republic. Even topless sunbathing isn’t a thing in DR. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Saona Island

Part of the Cotubanama National Park, Saona Island is a pristine tropical escape. With a lack of development, including hotels, it is an ideal day trip.

Christopher Columbus discovered the island and named it after a friend. It was the location for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The easiest way to reach the island is via a catamaran tour. Most trips stop at Palmilla Swimming Area, a shallow area that adults can touch the bottom in the turquoise water.

Most trips depart from Bayahibe and take 8 to 10 hours. Lunch and drinks are usually included in the tour.

Is the Water Safe in the Dominican Republic

While visiting the Dominican Republic, drink bottled water. The tap water is NOT safe to drink. So drink bottled water exclusively during your visit. I even brush my teeth with bottled water or mouthwash. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stay away from the following:

• Tap or well water
• Ice made with tap or well water
• Drinks made with tap or well water (such as reconstituted juice)
• Unpasteurized milk

Complimentary bottled water should be available in your room during your entire stay. Water fountains are not the norm in the Dominican Republic.

What to Wear in the Caribbean

Beach Packing List 

Liquor safety.

Practice some basic precautions during your stay. The drinking age in the Dominican Republic is 18.

• Make sure all bottled beverages are sealed with their factory seals in your mini fridge.
• Don’t drink from open liquor bottles in your room.
• Watch bartenders make your beverages.
• Before drinking, smell your cocktail.
• Drink slowly.
• Eat before and while you are drinking.
• Drink bottled water while drinking alcohol.

Food Safety

According to the CDC, stay away from the following:

• Food served at room temperature
• Food from street vendors
• Raw or soft-cooked (runny) eggs
• Raw or undercooked (rare) meat or fish
• Unwashed or unpeeled raw fruits and vegetables
• Unpasteurized dairy products
• ”Bushmeat” (monkeys, bats, or other wild game)

Insect Safety in DR

According to the CDC, protect yourself by doing the following:

• Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
• Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
• Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on your skin.
• Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
• Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

Make an Appointment at Travel Clinic

I headed to CDC.gov for Caribbean travel information, including required immunizations. My family practitioner advised me to make an appointment at a travel clinic.

At the travel clinic, my nurse practitioner advised a Typhoid vaccine, along with Hepatitis A and a booster vaccine for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis since it had been five years since my last shot. I was covered for the MMR vaccine, or measles, mumps and rubella.

The nurse practitioner also discussed mosquito safety since dengue fever is sometimes an issue for the Caribbean. I packed a 3 oz. container of insect repellant and used it when I walked through a shady area and in the evenings.

Along with vaccines, she discussed traveler’s diarrhea (TD). She advised I start taking probiotics before and during my trip. I also drank a dose of Emergen-C daily, especially after long international flights. I packed some over-the-counter medications for TD symptoms since it’s the most common illness during travel.

Fear of TD–Traveler’s Diarrhea

I have a fear of TD. Who has time for that? I didn’t want to find a Dominican pharmacy, so I packed all the supplies I might need. Here’s what the CDC recommends.

• Antiacid—like Tums
• Pepto-Bismol tablets
• Imodium tablets
• Oral Rehydration Salts—available at REI
• Prescription Antibiotics—prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner based on your itinerary.

If you get seasickness, here are the top tips and products to reduce the effects .

First Aid Supplies

Accidents happen so pack a basic first aid kit to be prepared, even for minor scrapes and blisters.

• Pain Reliever
• Motion Sickness pills, like non-drowsy Dramamine
• Cough Drops
• Cold Medication—I prefer a separate Day and Night version.
• Anti-Histamine—like Benadryl
• Triple antibiotic cream—like Neosporin
• Anti-Itch Cream
• Anti-septic wipes
• Inspect Repellent

Restroom Supplies

When traveling away from resorts, pack some restroom supplies. You will need them outside restaurants and hotels.

• Toilet paper, off the roll in a plastic bag
• Hand sanitizer
• Bleach wipes
