Niagara Falls is truly a sight to behold. Maybe you visited it as a kid, like I did, or think of it as a low-cost honeymoon destination. But really, Niagara Falls is so much more than that! The 3 falls that make up Niagara Falls are situated between 2 cities of the same name in 2 countries and collectively they pump over 757,000 gallons of water each second. That’s pretty impressive!

These natural wonders are visited by millions of people each year who enjoy not only the waterfalls, but also the area’s other attractions like hiking trails, casinos, parks, gardens, an observation wheel, and even a 17th-century fort.

If you’re planning a trip to Niagara Falls, you’re probably wondering when you should go, as this is definitely an area where the timing of your trip is important. In this post, we’ll go over the best times to visit Niagara Falls by season so you can decide what time of year is best for your getaway.

Niagara Falls location

Niagara Falls is a naturally beautiful attraction that straddles 2 different countries, the U.S. and Canada. It’s also the name of 2 distinct cities, one in each country. These cities, and the falls, lie on the banks of the Niagara River which separates Ontario, Canada from New York State.

Niagara Falls is actually made up of 3 separate falls — Horseshoe Falls (also known as the Canadian Falls), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls .

While most people are familiar with the waterfalls, the area actually has lots of other attractions, too, making it a well-rounded destination on both the Canadian and American sides. Fireworks displays, wineries, an aquarium, and hiking trails are just some of what you can experience when you visit Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls State Park , established in 1885 is the oldest state park in the U.S.

Hot Tip: Since Niagara Falls includes attractions in both the U.S. and Canada, be sure to travel with a credit card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees .

Niagara Falls is one of those places where the time of year you visit can really affect your experience. Let’s look at each season in Niagara Falls so you can determine the best month for your trip.

Niagara Falls in Spring (March, April, May)

Niagara Falls in spring

Spring is a great time to visit Niagara Falls as long as you don’t mind the possibility of some chilly weather. Early spring can see temperatures ranging anywhere from 25 to 55 degrees. This area can see snow into April, so early spring is still quite chilly and can be unpleasant for many travelers.

However, by May, temperatures start warming up to about 67 degrees, making late spring a wonderful time for a visit. Popular attractions that close for winter start, like Maid of the Mist, opening up in May.

Spring also brings blooming flowers — over 500,000 daffodils in Queen Victoria Park , 1,200 lilac bushes at Centennial Lilac Garden , orchids, succulents, and tropical plants at the Floral Showhouse, and over 2,400 roses on 99 acres of gardens at Niagara Parks’ Botanical Gardens .

Spring Events and Festivals

  • Niagara Falls Elvis Festival (April)

Bottom Line: While early spring can still be chilly with the possibility of snow, late spring is a lovely time to visit Niagara Falls. As temperatures start to warm up, flowers bloom in spectacular displays and seasonal attractions start to open for the year.

Niagara Falls in Summer (June, July, August)

Niagara Falls illuminated at night

Summer is considered the best season to visit Niagara Falls . Tourism peaks between June and August because the weather is warm, with high temperatures ranging between 75 degrees and 81 degrees, and all of the popular attractions are in full swing. With the mist from the falls ever present, a temperature of 81 degrees will actually feel a bit cooler, so there’s never much worry that the weather will get too hot near Niagara Falls.

While the falls are always open and free to view, there are plenty of tours and activities you can do to get an up close and personal experience. Of course, everyone’s favorite and the most well-known tour is the Maid of the Mist , which has been in operation since 1846. This iconic boat tour takes guests to the base of the falls to experience them in their full glory, and yes, you’ll get wet. Rain ponchos are provided but it’s advisable to wear waterproof shoes so you don’t end up with soaking wet feet.

Hot Tip: While Maid of the Mist is the well-known boat tour on the American side, the Voyage to the Falls tour is the Canadian version, taking guests within arms reach of Horseshoe Falls.

You can also descend 175 feet into the Niagara Gorge to Cave of the Winds , right behind Bridal Veil Falls. Nicknamed “Hurricane Deck,” you’ll experience tropical storm-like conditions as you stand just feet away from the falls.

For a less intense experience, there’s the Niagara Scenic Trolley . Visitors can ride the narrated 3-mile route in one go or use it as hop-on-hop-off transportation.

Additional attractions include the Niagara SkyWheel , Canada’s largest observation wheel, taking guests 175 feet in the air for spectacular views of the falls. There’s also Old Fort Niagara on the American side. This 17th-century fort was used during the American Revolution and overlooks both Lake Ontario and the Niagara River.

Don’t miss the Niagara Falls fireworks display every night from late May to early October at 10 p.m. Every night year-round the falls are also illuminated , creating a spectacular lights display.

Summer Events and Festivals

  • Niagara Falls Comic Con (June)
  • Niagara Folk Arts Festival (June)
  • Royal Canadian Henley Regatta (August)

Bottom Line: Summer is the most popular time, and many would argue, the best time to visit Niagara Falls. Because of this, crowds and prices are at their peak in June, July, and August. The breezes and mist from the falls help make hot summer days feel very comfortable, allowing tourists to enjoy the 3 falls (Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls) without sweltering heat.

Niagara Falls in Fall (September, October, November

Niagara Falls in fall

Early fall is a popular time to visit Niagara Falls. September is one of the best months to visit because the weather is mild, with highs around 71 degrees, and it’s not as crowded as the summer. There are plenty of festivals in September and all of the popular tourist attractions are still operating on summer schedules. Plus, this is a great time to see beautiful fall foliage . Scenic walks and hikes are a great way to spend a crisp fall afternoon at Niagara Falls.

Fall marks harvest season for vineyards, making this a great time of year for oenophiles. Canada’s largest wine festival, the Niagara Grape and Wine Festival , happens each year in September.

Tourism dies down quite a bit in late fall. High temperatures range from 46 to 58 degrees in October and November and many seasonal attractions start to shut down.

Fall Events and Festivals

  • Niagara County Peach Festival  (September)
  • Niagara Falls Blues Festival  (September)
  • Niagara Grape and Wine Festival (September)
  • Niagara Falls International Marathon (October)
  • Niagara Falls Christmas Market (November-December)

Bottom Line: Early fall can be a fantastic time to visit Niagara Falls. The cool, crisp autumn temperatures bring vibrant fall colors, lively festivals, and the grape harvest. Once October and November roll around, crowds start to thin out and some attractions (like the popular Maid of the Mist tour) close for the season.

Niagara Falls in Winter (December, January, February)

Niagara Falls in winter

Winter is downright cold near Niagara Falls. Temperatures don’t creep much higher than 36 degrees and can even get into the teens … brrr! Because of that, there aren’t many crowds in the winter and prices are at their lowest, so it could be a good time to visit if you’re on a tight budget.

While some attractions, like Maid of the Mist, don’t operate during the winter, there are some year-round activities in the Niagara Falls area. The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory , Zipline to the Falls , Fallsview Casino , and Aquarium of Niagara are open during the winter. Plus, you may be lucky enough to see the falls partially frozen, a spectacular sight rewarding tourists who brave winter at Niagara Falls.

The Niagara Falls area is a popular area for birdwatchers, especially in the winter. Designated a “Globally Significant Important Bird Area” in 1996, this region is a winter home to many different types of birds, including gulls, ducks, geese, and swans. For even more birds, visit Bird Kingdom , the world’s largest free-flying indoor aviary, which is open all year long.

Winter Events and Festivals

  • Winter Festival of Lights (November-February)
  • Festival of Slice (December)
  • Niagara Icewine Festival (January)
  • Birds on the Niagara (February)

Bottom Line: You might think Niagara Falls is closed during the winter, but you’d be wrong. While the weather can be frigid and certain attractions close for the season, winter offers majestic views of the falls (perhaps partially frozen), prime time for bird activity, and plenty of year-round activities like a casino, aquarium, botanical garden, and butterfly conservatory.

The cheapest time to visit Niagara Falls is late fall, winter, and early spring. According to Google Hotels , October through May sees moderate hotel prices ranging from $41 to $115 per night. July and August have the most expensive hotel rates, with average rates going up to $174 per night.

Niagara Falls Hotels Bookable With Points

To save money on hotel rates in Niagara Falls, look for ones you can book with points. There are numerous options in the area that participate in the Marriott Bonvoy , Hilton Honors , World of Hyatt , and IHG One Rewards programs.

The Courtyard Niagara Falls is on the American side and can be booked with 31,000 to 39,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. Located in an early 20th-century chocolate factory, it’s one of the most popular Courtyard locations and a great way to use a Marriott free night certificate .

If you’d like amazing views of the falls from your hotel room, check out Sheraton Fallsview Hotel . Rooms are available for around 41,000 to 49,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, and you can even do a small cash upgrade to get a room with that coveted waterfall view. It’s easy to see why this hotel, located on the Canadian side of the falls, is one of the most popular Sheraton locations .

Hilton Niagara Falls Fallsview Hotel and Suites

If you’ve got Hilton Honors points to spend, take a look at Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel & Suites . This property, centrally located in the middle of the action, is connected to a casino, shops, and dining. The hotel itself, one of the most popular Hilton locations , boasts an indoor pool, fitness center, on-site restaurant, and even an EV charging station. It can be booked for as few as 30,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

The Hyatt Place Niagara Falls is a Category 3 Hyatt property that can be booked for 9,000 to 15,000 World of Hyatt points per night. In addition to a fitness center and pool, this property offers free breakfast.

Finally, check out the Crowne Plaza Niagara Falls-Fallsview hotel if you’ve got IHG One Rewards points to burn. Located on the Canadian side, this hotel offers views of the falls and is connected via an indoor walkway to a casino and indoor waterpark. You can book this location for 12,000 to 34,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

Bottom Line: Winter is the cheapest season to visit Niagara Falls, followed by early spring and late fall. During the summer, prices, along with crowds, soar to the highest levels of the year.

Niagara Falls is a fantastic destination for your next getaway. Located between Ontario, Canada, and New York State, this spectacular attraction has a little something for everyone. Whether visiting in the spring for fantastic blooms, the summer for great weather, the fall for harvest season, or even the winter for bird watching, there’s something to do any time of the year in Niagara Falls.

Best Times To Visit Niagara Falls

The best time to visit Niagara Falls is June to August. Summer is peak season, and with good reason: Average highs rest in the low 80s. Mists and breezes from the waterfalls can make the area feel cooler. You'll spend more money and face more crowds, but visiting in summer will allow you to take full advantage of the weather and attractions. Plus, the free Discover Niagara Shuttle is in full operation during the summer season, making it easy to get from one attraction to another. Spring and fall welcome fewer tourists thanks to the plummeting temps, but there are a few advantages to each season. Fall constitutes harvest season at local wineries, while spring's warming temperatures usher in colorful blooms at the botanical gardens . Winter sees below-freezing temperatures, causing many attractions, such as the Maid of the Mist boat tours, to shut down. However, the frigid climate does drive down hotel rates.

best time to visit niagara falls

Choosing the best time to visit Niagara Falls requires more than looking at the weather. Each season has a different atmosphere, a different look, and different advantages. As a local, I’ve experienced them all and have a few preferences for sure. The good news is that most of the year is a totally fine time to visit, but some months are better than others.

The Absolute Best Month to Visit Niagara Falls: September

american falls niagara

If you want clear skies, warm days, fully operating attractions, and reasonable crowds, September is the best time to visit Niagara Falls. Come after Labor Day (Labour Day in Canada) to make sure it’s officially transitioned into shoulder season rather than the busy summer season.

Rain is minimal in September, so you can get those postcard-perfect photos of the falls under big blue skies. It’s warm enough that you won’t mind the spray of the waterfalls while enjoying boat tours or other attractions that get you close to the cascades. You can hike if you like or dine al fresco . The evenings are still pleasant for re-visiting after dark to see the waterfalls lit up at night, too!

Since students are back in school after Labor Day, the crowds lessen compared to summer months. Hotel rates drop a little, but they still aren’t dirt cheap.

Most Popular Time to Visit Niagara Falls: June through August

Summer officially kicks off with Memorial Day weekend (USA) and Victoria Day (Canada), both in late May. From June to August, Niagara Falls is in full swing. Like much of the US and Canada, Niagara Falls is busiest in the summer when families have time to roadtrip.

horseshoe falls niagara

On the bright side, you’ll have lots of daylight for sightseeing and attractions will be open all day, every day. There are festivals and special events in neighboring cities like Buffalo, NY or Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. And if you have swimming or other water activities on your itinerary, this is when nearby beaches will obviously be the warmest.

Despite its popularity (or perhaps because of it!), I don’t love Niagara Falls in the summer. It’s very crowded, so you’ll need to get to the waterfalls early or late to get photographs without strangers in your shot. Hotel prices are high and lines are long for don’t-miss activities like boat cruises…and especially for crossing the border. And you wouldn’t expect it, but summer days can get steamy hot — the area is riddled with high humidity and 2020 in particular had a lot of 90+ degree days (32+°C).

If you really want to come in summer, the second half of August is your best bet to avoid crowds and muggy days.

Visiting Niagara Falls in Autumn

Of the two shoulder seasons, fall is a better bet on when to come to Niagara Falls. September is mostly reminicient of summer, but October is distinctly autumnal. The air is crisp and cool in the mornings and evenings, but prime sightseeing hours in the daytime are usually comfortable and sunny. Just be aware: November usually falls into the “winter” category unless you get lucky!

Coming in the fall affords you the chance of seeing fall colors. Our hardwood trees blaze up in reds, oranges, and yellows. When that contrasts against the blue Niagara River gorge, it’s stunning. Most attractions operate normally through mid-October with some reducing hours in the second half of the month. Even though they’re open fewer hours, you shouldn’t have trouble fitting it all in: the crowds thin out considerably so you won’t have to wait in line.

niagara falls river gorge in fall

This is a particularly great time to come if you’re more interested in the natural attraction of Niagara Falls versus the commercial tours or activities. The later in fall you visit, the lower hotel rates will go, especially if you can time your visit to a weekday.

Visiting Niagara Falls in Winter

Winter in Niagara Falls can start as early as November and linger well into April. In fact, those bookending months are often the worst because you’ll be doused in freezing rain and wind instead of snow. All winter long, you can almost guarantee below-freezing temperatures. Snow comes and goes — sometimes you’re bombarded, but most times it’s quite manageable — and you’ll definitely need to bundle up.

niagara falls in winter

So why visit Niagara Falls in winter? Well, it can be quite beautiful in the snow! It’s magical when you get that perfect snowfall framing your view of the cascades. When you get cold, you can head indoors for a steamy hot cocoa or a glass of ice wine, a dessert wine that local wineries excel at.

Christmas is wonderful here. The Canadian “Festival of Lights” is a twinkling wonderland and both sides of the border have special events on weekends throughout December. In particular, look for events in two atmospheric towns: Lewiston, NY (on the US side) and Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (Canada). You’ll find carolers, carriage rides, and more.

The rest of winter comes with zero crowds, cheap hotels, and easy parking. Niagara Falls in winter also makes a great day trip from Toronto — you can spend most of your trip enjoying a city life of indoor museums, theater, dining, and shopping.

If you’re lucky, you’ll see Niagara Falls partially frozen over, although not every year gets cold enough for that (January and February are your best bets).

Spring at Niagara Falls

Spring is my least favorite time to visit Niagara Falls. We get a lot of rain, although the later in May you come, the less likely that will be. Temperatures in spring swing wildly, with some days pleasantly warm and other days shockingly cool. As a local, I can choose which days to visit the waterfalls based on last-minute good weather opportunity, but that’s hard for anyone planning a trip in advance.

If you do come in spring, you can enjoy the gardens (primarily on the Canadian side) in full bloom. It starts with daffodils, then tulips at Queen Victoria Park, right next to the waterfalls. However, my favorite is the Centennial Lilac Garden, which peaks mid-to-late May. On the American side, the Open Gardens guide points you to amazing gardens in the Buffalo Niagara region.

Spring is also the best time for fishing, something my husband could tell you more about than I can! With the Niagara River, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario all here, you just might catch some salmon, trout, bass, or walleye.

You’ll also get some shoulder season benefits in spring, like lighter crowds and more reasonable hotel rates. A few local festivals also start to pick up — Dyngus Day in Buffalo is one of a kind, but you’ll find plenty of events scheduled as area residents look for excuses to get outside!

Visiting Niagara Falls

In order of preference, I’d choose September, then October, then August for when to visit Niagara Falls. December is also lovely, assuming you bundle up and want a winter experience. Of course, it all depends on what you’d like to do.

November, March, and April are probably my least favorite months. There are still a few advantages to visiting then, but I think the cons outweigh the pros.

Regardless of when you come, I hope you enjoy your visit to Niagara Falls. Keep in mind the waterfalls themselves are just the beginning…our region has a lot to offer!

And if you’re planning a Niagara Falls family vacation, the kids are sure to love the three-acre Fallsview indoor water park. You know, just in case there isn’t enough water for them at the falls itself.

The Overall Best Time to go to Niagara Falls

Between mid-August and September is the best time to visit Niagara Falls – so prepare your Niagara Falls packing list accordingly.

After all, the weather is cooler and more comfortable than early in the summer. So, you won’t get too chilly when the waterfall’s spray splashes over you or too hot when you’re away from the water.

Plus, all the area’s major attractions are still open. And because this time is past the peak summer season, visitor numbers will be falling.

Additionally, you’ll still have your choice of tours and attractions to enjoy, but won’t have to wait too long in line for them or worry about tickets selling out.

And if you visit in late September, you may be able to see the leaves start to change color, without enduring freezing cold evenings.

In fact, you could even save some money since the price of hotels and flights will be cheaper at the time of year. All in all, this is a pretty perfect time to visit Niagara Falls!

How to Visit Niagara Falls on a Budget

Aerial view of Niagara Falls during an airplane tour

In winter, Niagara Falls is a frosty place to visit, with cold winds and average daytime temperatures ranging between 36° to 30° Fahrenheit (2° to -0.9° Celsius).

Unsurprisingly, that fact discourages many people from visiting, so visitor numbers drop substantially throughout the winter.

That also means that you can find some fantastic deals on attractions and accommodation for Niagara Falls between December and February.

However, there are some other benefits to visiting Niagara Falls in the offseason, as long as you don’t mind the cold weather.

After all, winter means that you’ll get to see the Falls in a completely different way as the Falls become frozen over or as massive chunks of ice crash over the edge of the falls.

But, you do need to remember that there are fewer things to do in Niagara Falls in the winter since many attractions are only open seasonally.

Plus, the cold weather can sometimes halt the operation of attractions that are open year-round.

When visiting at this time of year you’ll also need to ensure that you pack plenty of warm clothing and spare shoes so that cold, wet feet don’t ruin your vacation.

When is the Least Busy Time at Niagara Falls?

If you want to avoid intense crowds then the least busy time to visit Niagara Falls tends to be during the spring and fall months.

After all, school is still in session. As a result, most families tend to visit in the summer months. Therefore, crowds tend to be reduced on either side of the summer.

Additionally, because there’s less demand for tours, flights, and hotel rooms, you’ll enjoy lower prices at this time of year.

As a result, you could score some great deals in Niagara Falls of you visit in the spring and fall months.

And if you travel later in the year, you’ll have the opportunity to see stunning fall foliage in New York and the surrounding area.

However, it’s essential to remember that not all attractions operate outside the peak season.

In fact, many local businesses are closed and tours do not run throughout the winter. So, you may find that many businesses only run on limited hours during the spring and fall seasons.

When is the Worst Time to Visit Niagara Falls?

Aerial view of the Maid of the Mist boat tour in the water of Niagara Falls.

Peak season in Niagara Falls runs through the summer months of June, July, and August. As a result, visiting at this time of year results in several problems that make this the worst time to visit Niagara Falls.

First of all, the hordes of eager visitors in the area are massive at this time of year. So, this fact alone can make your vacation less relaxing.

Additionally, it can be difficult to find the best deals on accommodations and tours unless you book well in advance (or risk booking at the last minute).

It also means you might struggle to book tickets for Niagara Falls top attractions or spend more time waiting in line as everyone lines up to enjoy the same things.

Additionally, the weather throughout the summer is hot and humid, with daytime temperatures in July reaching an average high of 81° Fahrenheit (27° Celsius).

Therefore, your Niagara Falls visit can quickly become an uncomfortably sticky experience when you’re away from the falls’ cooling mist.

However, if you have no other option than to visit Niagara Falls in the summer, do book well in advance to ensure you get the best prices and availability when it comes to travel, accommodation, and tours.

Visiting Niagara Falls: Things to Consider

Niagara Skywheel is an obvious reason why visit Niagara Falls.

If you want to get the most out of your trip, these local tips will help you plan a perfect Niagara Falls vacation.

1. Remember your Passport

If you want to explore the entirety of Niagara Falls, you’ll need to bring your passport with you.

That’s because the falls lie across the border between the United States and Canada.

So, being able to cross the border will allow you to check out the area properly and have the best Niagara Falls experience possible.

2. Bring Waterproof Shoes and Clothes

When you visit Niagara Falls, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’re going to get soaked.

And if you go on the Maid of the Mist boat tour or visit the Cave of the Winds, the cold mist, and water droplets will deffo drench you in cold water.

So, packing a poncho or lightweight waterproof jacket with a hood will help keep some of the water off your clothes.

However, if you forget some of these items at home, some tour packages actually include a free poncho to keep you dry. Or, you can pick one up at a local gift shop.

Local Tip: Don’t forget to bring a waterproof case for your phone/camera.

3. Wear Layers

Spring and fall at Niagara Falls mean ever-changing weather conditions. So, it’s always best to wear light layers that you can put on or take off as the temperature changes.

You might also want to pack a light scarf and waterproof trench coat if chilly evenings are in the weather forecast.

Also remember that even if you visit Niagara in the summer, the temperature still drops a few degrees when you get close to the falls.

And during the cold winter months, layers will help you to keep warm despite the chilly temperatures.

4. Pack Comfortable Shoes

You’ll probably do plenty of walking. Therefore, make sure to remember comfortable shoes as you figure out the best time to go to Niagara Falls for you and your family.

Also, be sure to have water shoes or waterproof shoe covers that you can wear as you explore wetter attractions.

Additionally, it’s best to avoid sandals as they can get super uncomfortable when wet. After all, you can always change into nicer shoes in the evening if you want to!

5. Check Out Local Attractions Before You Travel

Always check ahead to see when the attractions you want to visit will be operating.

Because as I already mentioned, most outdoor attractions close or reduce their hours during winter – with some getting closed altogether during inclement weather.

Niagara Falls completely frozen and surrounded by snow in the winter during the best time to go to Niagara Falls.

Best Time to Go to Niagara Falls FAQ

When planning a visit to Niagara Falls, you’re sure to have lots of questions.

It’s also essential to research your trip well before you book your Niagara Falls vacation so that you can have the best experience possible.

So, here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the best time to go to Niagara Falls.

What is the Best Time of Day to Visit Niagara Falls?

Crowds tend to be smaller in the early morning and late afternoon. So, these times are best if you want to avoid crowds.

Additionally, temperatures are usually cooler in the early morning. So, if you’re visiting Niagara Falls in the summer, your visit will be more comfortable if you stop by at this time of day.

Is One Day Enough for Niagara Falls?

While it is possible to arrange a day trip to Niagara Falls, one day won’t give you enough time to explore the falls properly and visit all of the attractions in the region.

Therefore, you’ll definitely have to leave something out, and your visit will likely feel rushed with a one-day Niagara Falls itinerary .

Therefore, a minimum of two nights at Niagara Falls is recommended, or longer if possible.

This will give you enough time to book the experiences and visit the area’s main attractions without rushing from one tour to another.

Can You Go to Niagara Falls Without a Passport?

The three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls are located along the US/Canada border.

So, if you only want to visit one side of the falls in the country that you’re already in, you can see Niagara Falls without a passport.

However, if you want to see both sides of the falls, you will need a passport if you are over 15. Although that being said, children under 15 will need proof of US or Canadian citizenship.

But, ensuring everyone in your group has a passport reduces the risk of any problems that you may or may not encounter at the border.

Which Months are Niagara Falls Closed?

Niagara Falls is open to visitors all year long. But, the off-season at Niagara Falls is during the winter.

Therefore, visitor numbers tend to be lower due to colder temperatures. Additionally, some tours and attractions will be closed at this time of year.

That’s why, If you’re planning to visit Niagara Falls in winter, it’s best to check the availability of your chosen tours and attractions before you book your trip.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Niagara Falls?

Fall is a great time to visit Niagara Falls since you can avoid the summer crowds while enjoying comfortable daily temperatures.

You’ll also benefit from seeing beautiful fall colors on the trees and can attend fall festivals in the Niagara Region that make this the best time to go to Niagara Falls.

Summing it All Up: When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Niagara Falls?

Selecting the best time to go to Niagara Falls depends on what you want to experience and what you want to avoid.

However, overall, the best time to visit is between August and September.

At this time of year, the weather is slightly cooler than at the height of summer, the crowds are starting to thin out, and all major attractions and tours are still operating.

But if you want to avoid the crowds, it’s better to visit in spring or fall. This is when the weather is still comfortable, but there are much fewer visitors to the area than in peak tourist season at Niagara Falls.

Alternatively, budget-conscious travelers may visit Niagara Falls in winter when you can find fantastic deals on accommodations and flights.

But, you’ll have to decide whether the cold weather and limited attractions will spoil your visit at this time of year.

So, whenever you decide to book a trip to Niagara Falls, be sure to consider what the weather will be like, when tours will be available, and, of course, pack appropriately for all types of weather conditions.

Do this and you’ll enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to remember forever at Niagara Falls!

Best Time to Visit Niagara Falls (Monthly Events by a Local!)

Find the perfect time to visit Niagara Falls with our local's guide on monthly events and weather tips, ensuring a memorable trip for all travelers.

best time to visit niagara falls 2023

Niagara Falls is the perfect destination for any group with its awe-inspiring sights, mouthwatering dining options, and constant events. Whether you’re hoping for a fun family vacation or romantic getaway, these falls have much more to offer than water.

Before booking your perfect trip, however, take time to research local events, cost of travel, and local events.

Between late August and early September is the best time to visit Niagara Falls. Days average 75 degrees in the height of the afternoon, with lows in the 60s. Hotel prices fall between 20% and 30% after the passing of the busy season, making it easy on the budget. Though crowds are smaller, every popular summertime exhibit should remain open.

Worst Time to Visit Niagara Falls

These falls remain gorgeous all year round, but it may be best to avoid a winter trip. In particular, January can be a brutal month. As the coldest month of the year, January will likely see daily snow and temperatures below freezing. The average high of this month is a chilly 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and the lows can drop to 15 degrees.

best time to visit niagara falls 2023

Though this month is one of the cheapest to visit, this comes at another cost. Most of the outdoor exhibits close for the winter, meaning there will be far less to enjoy. The state park is open year-round, but the Maid of the Mist and popular Cave of the Winds close until spring.

What’s more, many of the open exhibits may be difficult to enjoy due to the biting winds and snow!

Bottom line: January may be best on the budget, but it is worst for the experience. Only venture during this month if you are looking for an intimate getaway and cozy, relaxing vacation indoors.

Cheapest Time to Visit Niagra Falls

Niagara Falls is an ideal vacation spot for anyone hoping to make the most of their money. The average cost of a hotel room for two ranges between $115 and $135 per night. Food options come in a huge variety, meaning it could be easy to look for dining options that fit your budget year-round.

best time to visit niagara falls 2023

Though hotel costs stay around the same throughout the year, they see a slight rise around the busy season from May to July. The cheapest time to visit Niagara Falls is either in early spring or fall.

In particular, September allows a lower budget while also allowing travelers to take advantage of the best sights and weather.

For a quieter, more tranquil experience, check out the trails around March and April. By this point, every trail should be fully open, and the temperatures hover around a steady warmth. Bring a jacket to avoid the spring chill, and take in the sights without having to battle the crowds.

Are you wondering when the best time to visit Niagara Falls is? Here is everything you need to know!

Niagara Falls is the world’s most famous waterfall and with good reason – it’s a truly impressive sight to see! As such, it’s one of the top tourist destinations in North America and seeing it should be on every traveller’s bucket list.

I’m lucky enough to live right next door to Niagara Falls, in nearby Toronto. And I’ve had the opportunity to explore the Niagara region at all different times of year, including seeing the falls several times. So, by now, I know when the best time to visit Niagara Falls is, and what the area is like throughout the changing seasons.

While it’s easy for me to take a day trip to Niagara Falls at any time of year, for most people it’s not that simple. So, to help you plan your trip for the ideal time of year, I’ve put together my complete guide on when to visit Niagara Falls.

Therefore, if you’re wondering when is the best time to visit Niagara Falls, read on for everything you need know!

Quick Season-by-Season Guide to Niagara Falls

When is the best time to visit niagara falls.

Niagara is actually a fantastic destination all-year round. But, if you’re wondering when is the best time to visit Niagara Falls, this will really depend on what type of traveller you are, what your budget is, and what else you’re looking to see and do on your trip.

My favourite times of year in Niagara are summer and fall. And, generally these are considered the best times to see the Falls and explore the surrounding region. But this doesn’t necessarily mean this is when you should visit, as there are pros and cons to each season.

So, to help you decide which time of year will suit you best to visit Niagara, here is a breakdown of each season and the pros and cons of each.

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls in summer, which is the best time to visit Niagara Falls.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is by far the most popular time of year to visit Niagara Falls. With long sunny days and warm weather, it’s the perfect time to see the falls, enjoy the city’s many attractions , wander along the Niagara River and explore the surrounding parks.

Plus, there are tons of great outdoor activities to do throughout the Niagara region in summer. Cycle through the beautiful countryside, take a winery tour , go hiking in the Niagara Glen, and marvel at the raging Niagara rapids up close on the White Water Walk .

Summer Weather in Niagara

Summers in Niagara are hot and sunny. The region gets around 10 days of rain per month throughout the summer. But this is usually light rain or sporadic storms. So, generally you can count on getting some good weather when you visit.

The daily temperatures generally range from 25° to 28° Celsius (77º to 82° Fahrenheit) from June to August. Whereas overnight is usually a bit cooler, with average temperatures as low as 14º to 18º Celsius (57º to 64º Fahrenheit).

Downside to Visiting in Summer

The biggest downside to visiting Niagara in summer is that this is the height of the tourist season. So, although it’s usually considered the best time to visit, it’s also the busiest time.

Every year, over 13 million people visit Niagara Falls, and more than half of them do so in the summer! This means the city and its attractions can get quite crowded, there’s more traffic, and accommodation prices are much more expensive during this time.

However, Niagara’s economy largely rely’s on its summer tourism industry. So, the region is well-equipped for it, and is able to accommodate the high number of visitors.

Personally, we’ve never experienced issues with driving, parking or sightseeing in Niagara, even during the height of the summer season. And there are plenty of beautiful green spaces to explore near the falls, which are much quieter and ideal for when you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the main attraction.

Niagara Falls surrounded by orange and red foliage in fall, which is one of the best times to visit Niagara Falls.

Fall (September to November)

The second most popular time to visit Niagara Falls is in fall. This is a great time for milder temperatures, smaller crowds and cheaper hotel prices . And, most of the region’s attractions, such as river cruises , continue to operate throughout fall.

On top of this, the countryside around Niagara is actually one of the best destinations in Canada to see fall foliage. So, this is a fantastic time to go hiking, explore by bike , take a winery tour , or do a road trip through the region.

In particular, the Niagara Parkway, which follows the Niagara river from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake, is one of the most scenic drives in Canada. And there’s no better time to experience it than in fall, as the road leads you through several miles of vibrant autumn colours and picturesque stops.

Plus, Niagara Falls itself is especially beautiful while surrounded by hues of red, orange and gold. This creates a dramatic contrast with the bright blue water and makes for a particularly spectacular view.

Fall Weather in Niagara

The weather can vary quite drastically in Niagara during fall. September can still very much feel like summer in Niagara. But throughout October and November the region starts to get colder temperatures and more overcast and rainy days.

And, by the end of November, winter weather has usually set in, with consistently colder temperatures and even the first snowfall.

Given the big shift in temperatures throughout the season, you can expect daily averages ranging all the way from 8° to 21° Celsius (46° to 70° Fahrenheit), and overnight temperatures between 1° to 13° Celsius (34° to 55° Fahrenheit). And, it’s not uncommon to still get a few very hot days during fall in Niagara!

Downside to Visiting in Fall

There are very few downsides to visiting the Niagara region during fall. In fact, in my experience, early-to-mid fall is the best time to visit Niagara Falls!

The biggest downside will be if you’re visiting at the end of fall. By this time, the trees will have lost their leaves, so the landscape won’t be as picturesque anymore. And the weather will be much colder, with more rain and grey skies.

Although, on the bright side, you can usually get some great deals on accommodation in November!

Winter (December to February)

It’s no surprise that winter is Niagara’s quietest and least popular time of year. But, this doesn’t mean it’s a bad time to visit Niagara Falls.

This is the best time to avoid the crowds, make the most of cheap accommodation deals and even enjoy the region’s array of winter activities.

Niagara Falls actually has quite a few fun activities throughout the winter season, including the Winter Festival of Lights and Hot Chocolate Trail, the Niagara Icewine Festival and several outdoor skating rinks. Plus, the region is full of quaint boutique hotels and B&Bs for a cozy winter stay.

And, seeing Niagara Falls in winter is sometimes even more spectacular than in summer. During the coldest months, the mist can form a crust of ice over the gushing water, creating the illusion that the falls have frozen. Plus, with frozen foliage, icicles and snow surrounding the falls, it can create a particularly unique and enchanting view.

Winter Weather in Niagara

Winter in Niagara is cold! Although your perspective on this will depend on where you’re coming from, as there are plenty of places in North America which get much colder than this. So, to you, these temperatures may seem quite mild.

During winter, daytime temperatures average -2° to 2° Celsius (28° to 36° Fahrenheit), and between -4° to -8° Celsius (25° to 18° Fahrenheit) overnight.

Luckily, the Niagara region tends to be pretty sunny throughout the winter, so the cold air usually feels relatively crisp and fresh. And although there are usually a few snowfalls throughout the season, this doesn’t usually impact travel in the region that much.

Downside to Visiting in Winter

The biggest downside to visiting Niagara in the winter is the cold, as it can make sightseeing outside uncomfortable for long periods of time. However, in my opinion, with the right clothing – such as good boots, a warm coat, gloves and hat – Niagara can be a very pleasant place to explore on a sunny winter day!

The other downside to visiting in winter is that some of Niagara’s key attractions – such as the White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car, and Niagara City Cruises – are seasonal, so won’t be open or operating during this time.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is a magical time at Niagara Falls, as you can witness the region coming back to life following the winter.

Not only do the days get longer and warmer and the landscape turns green again, but Niagara is also one of the best places in North America to see spring flowers bloom. In fact, it’s the daffodil capital of North America!

Plus, Niagara is home to millions of tulips in the springtime, as well as thousands of lilac bushes, impressive botanical gardens, and Niagara Parks’ famous Floral Clock.

And, on top of enjoying the tapestry of colours and vibrant atmosphere, you can also beat the summer crowds and high season prices by visiting Niagara Falls in spring.

Spring Weather in Niagara

Just like in fall, Niagara’s spring weather can vary a lot with mixed weather patterns and changing temperatures. This is actually quite a weird time of year – one day it can be sunny and warm, and the next there will be a random snow storm!

During spring, average daytime temperatures range anywhere from 5° to 19° Celsius (41° to 66° Fahrenheit). And nighttime temperatures usually sit between -2° to 9° Celsius (28° to 48° Fahrenheit).

Downside to Visiting in Spring

The unpredictable weather is the biggest downside to visiting Niagara Falls in spring. Although the overall springtime temperatures are much milder than in the winter, the mixed weather patterns make it hard to predict what it will be like during your visit. So it’s best to come prepared for all different weather conditions!

Something else to keep in mind is that seasonal attractions – like the White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car, and Niagara City Cruises – are still closed at the start of spring, usually reopening at the end of March or beginning of April.

What’s the best month to visit Niagara Falls?

Typically, the best time to visit Niagara Falls is during the summer months, from June to August. This is when the weather is at its warmest, the days are long, and all of Niagara’s attractions are open. Although keep in mind that this is also peak tourist season.

If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, I would recommend September as the best month to visit Niagara. You will still get to enjoy the nice warm weather and all the attractions during this time, but with fewer crowds.

Is Niagara Falls better in summer or winter?

This really depends on what you’re interested in, as both seasons offer unique experiences. But, most people would agree that Niagara Falls is better in summer.

In summer, you’ll get to enjoy warm weather, all of Niagara’s attractions, and picturesque parks, countryside and nearby wineries , which are perfect to explore by bike or on foot.

Whereas in winter, the falls can look particularly magical surrounded by ice and snow. And if it’s cold enough, the water sometimes forms an ice crust, giving the illusion that the falls are frozen!

How many days do you need in Niagara Falls?

You can experience the main attractions of Niagara Falls in just one to two days. This makes it a great destination for a day trip or weekend break.

In one day you’ll have enough time to explore both the American and Canadian sides, take a boat tour and enjoy the surrounding parks and attractions at the falls. If you have an extra one to two days to spend at Niagara, I would recommend hiking in the Niagara Glen, driving the scenic Niagara Parkway, spending some time exploring the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and taking a winery tour .

When is Niagara Falls closed?

Niagara Falls never closes! It’s a natural landmark which is accessible year-round.

However, certain attractions and facilities in Niagara do have seasonal closures. In particular, the White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car and Niagara City Cruises close during the winter months. Therefore, it’s best to check the schedules for the specific attractions you’re interested in before planning your visit.

What is the easiest way to get to Niagara Falls?

This really depends on where you’re coming from. But, generally, the easiest way to get to Niagara is to drive.

Niagara Falls is about a 1.5 hour drive from Toronto on the Canadian side, and only 30 minutes from Buffalo on the US side. If you’re flying in, Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) or Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) are the closest options.

Although, if you want to make things as easy as possible for yourself, you might want to consider booking a Niagara Falls day tour , which includes transport.

There are also train and bus services connecting Niagara Falls to other nearby towns and cities, including the Go Train between Niagara and Toronto.

What day of the week is best to see Niagara Falls?

The best time to visit Niagara Falls is on a weekday, as it’s less busy than at weekends. This is especially true during the peak tourist season from June to August.

Is it worth seeing Niagara Falls at night?

It’s absolutely worth seeing Niagara Falls at night! Every night of the year the falls are illuminated with colourful lights, turning the gushing water into a mesmerizing light show. Plus, from May to October, and during the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights, there are nightly fireworks displays over the falls, for an even more spectacular experience.

The view of Niagara Falls lit up at night with red and blue lights.

Is it better to go to Niagara Falls in the morning or afternoon?

Whether you prefer to visit Niagara Falls in the morning or afternoon will really depend on what type of experience you’re looking to have.

If you want to beat the crowds, the best time to visit Niagara Falls will be early in the morning. Whereas in the afternoon, the area will be more lively and there will likely be more activities and events going on.

If you’re hoping to see Niagara Falls in both the daylight and at night, I would recommend visiting in the late afternoon, having dinner there, and staying for the light show after dark.

What’s the best way to see Niagara Falls?

The best way to see Niagara Falls is by taking a boat tour , as this will get you close-up views of the falls from the water. And, if you want to see the falls from above, you can head up to the Skylon Tower observation deck , or take a panoramic helicopter flight over the falls!

Or, if you prefer to stay on the ground, you can also get some fantastic views from the various viewpoints and walking trails around the falls.

How much does it cost to go to Niagara Falls?

The cost of visiting Niagara Falls will vary based on the activities you do there. Seeing the falls and accessing most of the surrounding parks and trails is free. But other attractions such as boat tours , helicopter rides , museums, observations decks can cost anywhere from $15 to $200 per activity.

In addition, you’ll want to budget for accommodation , meals and transport to and from Niagara.

When is Niagara Falls most crowded?

Niagara Falls is most crowded during the summer months (June to August), especially on weekends and holidays. To beat the crowds during peak season, the best time to visit Niagara Falls will be early in the morning on weekdays.

Is September a good time to visit Niagara?

Yes, September is one of the best times to visit Niagara Falls! The weather is still pleasant, with warm temperatures and long days. But there are fewer crowds than during the peak of the summer season.

Is October a good month to go to Niagara?

October is a great time to visit Niagara as the weather is typically crisp and comfortable, and the region will be full of beautiful fall colours. There are also fewer crowds at this time of year than during the peak summer months, making it an ideal time to explore the falls and surrounding attractions with fewer tourists.

Which side of Niagara Falls is better?

Both the American and Canadian sides of Niagara Falls offer unique experiences and stunning views of the falls. Although the Canadian side has more attractions, and is usually considered to have the better views. This is because the largest of Niagara’s three waterfalls – Horseshoe Falls – is located on the Canadian side.

However, if you’re able to, I would highly recommend visiting both sides of Niagara Falls, so you can fully appreciate the beauty of the falls from all different angles.

Do you need a passport to go to Niagara Falls?

If you’re coming from the U.S. and want to visit the Canadian side of  Niagara Falls  then you will need to show the  applicable travel and identification documents , such as a passport, at the border. The same applies for travellers coming from Canada who want to visit the American side of Niagara Falls.

The view from the top of Niagara Falls, with a rainbow shining out of the mist.

Final Thoughts – Best Time to Visit Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls truly is a fantastic year-round destination!

No matter when you choose to visit, you’ll get to enjoy spectacular views of the falls, as well as plenty of other attractions and activities. So, the best time to go will really depend on your budget, travel preferences and what type of experience you’re looking to have.

Hopefully this post has answered your questions and helped you decide when the best time to visit Niagara Falls is, so you can start planning your trip.

If you can, I recommend booking  this full-day tour , which goes to the most popular attractions in Niagara Falls, New York, and Ontario. Niagara Falls Canadian side

Niagara Falls itinerary

There are many  unique things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada , which is why many tourists say it resembles an amusement park. The mix of entertainment venues and leisurely outdoor spaces is a hit with visitors.

In Ontario, you can stand directly in front of the falls, and there are several hotels and casinos nearby. While these large accommodations are a bit imposing on the natural environment, the waterfalls provide a great backdrop while you’re staying overnight.

Tourism in Niagara Falls

While the views of the falls aren’t as spectacular on the American side, there are still plenty of things to do around this beautiful natural environment.

Things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada

We also have more  Niagara Falls tips  in our guide to  visiting Niagara Falls, Canada . To make the most of our trip, we booked   this tour , which includes a heli-tour, Voyage to the Falls boat ride, a meal at Skylon Tower, and a few other activities. It was the best way to see the falls as a first-time visitor, so I highly recommend it.

Voyage to the Falls, the official Niagara Falls boat tour on the Canadian side

A  Niagara Falls boat tour  is one of the best ways to see the majesty of the falls. If you’re on the Canadian side, Voyage to the Falls is the best attraction, and you can get your ticket  here .

Voyage to the Falls, visit Niagara Falls

This tour gets you as close to the Horseshoe Falls as possible, giving you a one-of-a-kind view of the rushing waters. The boat goes through the Niagara Gorge and passes the American and Bridal Veil Falls before inching closer to the Horseshoe Falls.

The ride will leave you speechless, and you can either stay inside the cabin or put on a poncho and go out to the deck. If you’re interested in Voyage to the Falls and other attractions on the Canadian side, I recommend booking the  full-day tour  I mentioned earlier.

Journey Behind the Falls, the best way to get close to Niagara Falls

Journey Behind the Falls  is one of the top Niagara Falls tourist attractions. As the name suggests, it takes you just behind the Horseshoe Falls, offering one of the  best ways to see Niagara Fall s up close.

Journey Behind the Falls, visit to Niagara Falls, Canada

You’ll enter at the Table Rock Center next to the falls, then take an elevator 130 feet down to the underground tunnels. This is one of the most striking experiences that you can’t replicate anywhere else, so be sure to  book your ticket  in advance.

Have dinner at the Skylon Tower, the best thing to do at Niagara Falls

While you’re on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, be sure to visit Skylon Tower .

This  Niagara Falls observation tower  is nearly 520 feet tall, so it offers the best panoramic perspective of the waterfalls. Even the elevators, locally known as “Yellow bugs,” are fully paned in glass so you get stellar views.

Skylon Tower, what to do in Niagara Falls

If you are going to visit the Skylon tower you have two options:  reserve your ticket  to the 360° viewpoint, or dine at the Tower’s Revolving Dining Room or Summit Suite Buffet. Both restaurants have a great menu; we ate at the buffet and would go again, for sure.

We had dinner as part of this  combo tour , which also included the Hornblower cruise, Journey Behind the Falls, and a helicopter ride.

Zipline to the Falls, a fun thing to do at Niagara Falls

Soaring over the water on a zipline is one of the  top things to do at Niagara Falls , and an experience you won’t ever forget.

Zipline To The Falls, Niagara Falls zipline

The Niagara Falls zipline travels almost 2,200 feet across the Niagara Gorge to the base of the Horseshoe Falls. While it can seem terrifying and not the best for people who suffer from vertigo, it’s completely safe and even has an automatic braking system.

You can take photos from the observation platform and even fly down the zipline at the same time as your friends. Just be sure to  book in advance  so you’re sure you can experience this activity when you visit!

Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour, the best way to visit Niagara Falls

For another aerial perspective, consider a  Niagara Falls helicopter tour .  This 12-minute flight  soars over the Niagara Whirlpool and the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the Canadian and American sides. You’ll also be able to see Queen Victoria Park, Skylon Tower, and all of Toronto from a birds-eye view.

Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour, travel tips Niagara Falls

A helicopter ride is one of the top activities that I recommend, and you can also embark on this adventure  from the American side . Personally, we went with the  combo tour  that also included a boat ride and dinner at Skylon Tower.

Enjoy the views from the Niagara SkyWheel

A trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario is not complete without a ride on the  SkyWheel . At nearly 165 feet tall, it’s the largest observation wheel in Canada. It’s in the nearby entertainment district of Clifton Hill and boasts amazing views of the falls and beyond.

SkyWheel, traveling to Niagara Falls

A ride on the Skywheel lasts about 10 minutes, and the cabins are fully enclosed and climate-controlled, so you can ride comfortably all year round. If you’re wondering  where to view Niagara Falls at night , the Skywheel is the top choice.

It’s also a popular place to see the famous Niagara Falls fireworks, so I recommend  booking a ticket  in advance, especially if you want to ride at a specific date or time.

Things to do in Niagara Falls, NY

If you want to  visit Niagara Falls , NY, there are a few points of interest you shouldn’t miss. During our trip, we opted for  this tour  because it included all the iconic spots in just a few hours. We also have a guide to   visiting Niagara Falls, USA   that you can check out.

Terrapin Point at Goat Island, the best place to see the Horseshoe Falls

One of my to p Niagara Falls tips  is to get off the beaten path and check out  Terrapin Point Lookout on Goat Island . Since the lookout is on the western end of the island, you’ll get awesome views of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and Niagara Gorge.

Terrapin Point at Goat Island, Niagara Falls US side

Goat Island is on the Niagara River, so you have to cross a bridge to get there. While you’re there, spend some time on the walking trails or check out the Cave of the Winds, another popular place for  tourism in Niagara Falls , which I’ll mention later.

Maid of the Mist, the official Niagara Falls boat tour on the American side

One of the best ways to experience  Niagara Falls, USA  is by taking a boat tour. The American tour is called the  Maid of the Mist  boat ride and is one of the most popular attractions on this side of the falls.

Maid of the Mist, Niagara Falls how to visit

You’ll travel along the Niagara Gorge and make your way out into the Canadian waters briefly to get a spectacular view of the waterfalls before returning to the  Niagara Falls U.S. side .

The boats depart every 15 minutes, and the trip takes about 20 minutes. I suggest reserving a spot in advance or booking  this tour , which also includes access to the Cave of the Winds.

Cave of the Winds, the best thing to do on Niagara Falls’ U.S. side

The  Cave of the Winds  is another popular  Niagara Falls U.S. attraction . It’s a series of platforms that lead to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls, behind which you can see a natural cave that was discovered in the 1830s.

Cave of the Winds, travel tips for Niagara Falls

As you traverse the wooden bridges and stairs, you’ll make your way across the Niagara Gorge. Wear shoes with good traction and keep your poncho handy because you will get wet. The conditions as you approach the falls are similar to those of a hurricane, and the observation platform is aptly named Hurricane Deck.

Before descending 165 feet to the wet and windy platforms, you can explore The World Changed Here Pavilion, a multimedia exhibition that explains the history of Niagara Falls. We enjoyed this attraction and did it as part of this  half-day tour .

American Falls, one of the best places to visit in Niagara Falls

While the Horseshoe Falls in Canada are the most famous, the Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls are also very beautiful.

American Falls, things to do in Niagara Falls

The  American Falls  are nearly 100 feet tall and are quite an impressive sight from the  U.S. side of Niagara Falls . The best place to see them is from the Prospect Point viewing area. You should also check out the view from Luna Island since it’s between the American and Bridal Veil Falls. The island isn’t that big or crowded, so it’s a unique place to see the U.S. waterfalls.

Old Fort Niagara, a must-see on Niagara Falls’ U.S. side

Old Fort Niagara  is another interesting place to visit on the U.S. side. It’s located in Youngstown, where the Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario. It’s about a 20-minute drive to get there, or you could book  this tour , which includes an optional Maid of the Mist ride.

Old Fort Niagara, visiting Niagara Fall

The fort is a colonial fortification built by the French Empire in 1726. Along with the historic building, there is also a visitor center that functions as a museum. Everything is contained within Fort Niagara State Park, which supports  tourism in Niagara Falls . If you’re looking for some more natural sightseeing, this area is great, as there are several nearby hiking trails.

The best time to visit Niagara Falls

You might be wondering  when the best time is to go to Niagara Falls , but the truth is that this place is beautiful any time of the year. Depending on what you want to do and which attractions you want to see, one season may be better than another.

For example, all the tourist attractions are open in the summer, but it’s also the most crowded time to visit and it can get pretty hot. You’ll have to book your accommodation and tour tickets months in advance, and even then, it’ll be quite expensive.

Information on Niagara Falls

If you decide to visit in the spring, you’ll be able to see some of the tourist attractions as well as get a cheaper price for a hotel. While it’s less crowded this time of year, the weather is unpredictable. We visited in May and were lucky, but you never know.

Fall is the  best time to go to Niagara Falls  if you’re more interested in the natural surroundings. The autumn colors and foliage are gorgeous, the weather is nice, and there aren’t many tourists.

Finally, you might not think that a winter trip to Niagara Falls is a good idea since most of the attractions are closed. However, when it’s cold and the falls freeze over, it makes for one of the most extraordinary sights, and it’s something we hope to see for ourselves soon!

How to get to Niagara Falls – parking at Niagara Falls

If you’re not sure  how to visit Niagara Falls , the easiest way is by car. Most people who  travel to Niagara Falls  in Canada arrive from Toronto, which is about 90 miles away. That said, the cities of Hamilton and Mississauga are closer, so those are two other options.

If you’re wondering  how far Niagara Falls is from New York City , it’s about a 7-hour drive. Those who visit the American side usually come from Buffalo , which is just 20 miles away from the falls. That isn’t to say that you can’t take advantage of a trip to NYC by also visiting Niagara Falls. Just be aware that it’s a very long drive and it may be better to book a tour. We’ll list some options below.

You can get a rental car for your trip or go in your own vehicle, but you’ll run into the problem that parking isn’t free at Niagara Falls. On both the American and Canadian sides, you must pay for parking, unless your accommodation has a free parking lot. Considering this, it might be easier to book a tour that includes transportation or hotel pick-up and drop-off .

If you don’t have your own car or don’t feel like driving, you can get to Niagara Falls from Toronto, New York, and Buffalo by booking a tour that includes transportation. Here are the best options :

Niagara Falls from Toronto

There are two  Niagara Falls tours from Toronto  that I recommend.

If you want to go straight to the falls, I recommend  this tour , which goes to the most iconic attractions like Skylon Tower, Niagara Parkway, and the Niagara Whirlpool. Along with incredible views of the falls, you’ll also get a wine tasting.

Another option is  this night tour  with a boat cruise. In addition to seeing the falls up close, you’ll experience Niagara Falls’ magical evening lighting. The tour also includes a few tourist attractions and a wine tasting, so it’s the perfect choice if you don’t mind returning to Toronto after dark.

Niagara Falls from New York City

There are several great  Niagara Falls tours from New York City , depending on how much time you have.

My first choice is this  one-day bus tour   with admission to the Maid of the Mist and a few other attractions.

For those who have more time, I recommend  this two-day tour . Along with a ride on the Maid of the Mist and other interesting attractions, on your way to Niagara Falls you will stop at Watkins Glen State Park. This package also includes a nighttime viewing of the falls and an overnight stay at a hotel.

Finally, you might be interested in   this three-day tour , which includes a visit to Niagara Falls and several Toronto attractions.

Niagara Falls from Buffalo

Lastly, if you’re looking for a  bus to Niagara Falls from Buffalo , NY,  this  is the best option. Unlike the tours from Toronto and NYC, this booking is for transportation only, so you’re free to visit the falls and attractions that interest you.

I suggest spending at least one night in Niagara Falls so you can enjoy the beautiful lighting and fireworks. Seeing the falls in the evening is a totally different experience that you shouldn’t miss. If you’re looking for  hotels in Niagara Falls , here are the top recommendations.

Hotels in Canada at Niagara Falls

We stayed overnight  at a Niagara Falls hotel in Canada , the  Sheraton on the Falls , and the views from our hotel room were incredible. As this is one of the top accommodations in Niagara Falls, I suggest booking your room in advance.

Here’s more information on the Sheraton and other top  hotels on Niagara Falls’ Canadian side :

Sheraton on the Falls

I have to start with the  Sheraton on the Falls  because it really blew us away. The rooms are great and some of them offer spectacular views of the waterfalls. While these particular rooms are a bit more expensive, it was worth it to us to get stunning views from the comfort of our bed.

Also, the hotel is home to the  Fallsview Restaurant , which serves buffet and a la carte meals. The accommodation’s facilities also include shops, a spa, and a Starbucks. Plus, the hotel connects to the  Niagara Casino and Fallsview Indoor Water Park , so on top of a great location, you’ll have all the amenities you want.

We loved staying here and think it’s one of the most beautiful hotels on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview

If you’re looking for luxury, the  Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview  is a perfect choice. The accommodation is just 300 feet from the falls, so it offers a convenient location and unbeatable views.

The hotel also boasts awesome amenities like a breakfast buffet and complimentary drinks and snacks. Besides the hotel rooms, the facilities include a couple of restaurants (TGI Fridays and Keg Steakhouse), a Starbucks, an indoor pool, and a gym.

From the hotel, it’s just a 10-minute walk to the Skylon Observation Tower, so this is one of the best places to stay if you want to be close to the action.

The Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls

The  Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls  is aptly named, as it provides wonderful views of the Canadian falls. The hotel has an observation room where you can enjoy incredible views without the crowds.

It’s next to the  Falls Incline Railway , which connects to  Table Rock  and  Journey Behind the Falls . Along with its nice location, this accommodation has rooms with waterfall views, although they cost a bit more.

That said, if you stay here, you can take advantage of some great amenities, such as a living room with a fireplace, an indoor pool, a hot tub, a sauna, and a fitness center. There is also an Applebee’s on the premises.

Tower Hotel at Fallsview

The  Tower Hotel at Fallsview  is another beautiful accommodation in Niagara Falls, Canada. Along with comfortable rooms, the hotel also has a decent restaurant, so it’s quite a bargain for the price.

Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel and Suites

The  Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel and Suites  is another top hotel in Niagara Falls, Canada, that I recommend. It’s centrally located so you’ll have easy access to the area’s attractions and restaurants. Some of the rooms have views of the falls, too.

This hotel also connects to the Fallsview Casino, so it’s a great place to stay if you plan on visiting the casino in the evening.

Hotels in Niagara Falls, NY

We also stayed at a  Niagara Falls hotel  in New York. which was nice because we arrived at night. We spent a restful night in our hotel room and got up early in the morning so we could go straight to the attractions.

Our room was at the  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino , and although the views weren’t as impressive as the Canadian hotel, if you ask for a room on a high floor, you’ll get beautiful views of the falls. You can even see the Niagara Falls fireworks without leaving your room.

Here’s more information about the Seneca resort and other top  hotels on Niagara Falls’ American side :

Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino

The   Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino  is one of the best hotels to stay in while visiting New York’s Niagara Falls. The resort includes a casino, fitness center, sauna, massage services, a hot tub, an indoor pool, a cafeteria, and several restaurants. Our room was beautiful and immaculate. It’s all-around one of the best hotels on the American side of Niagara Falls.

Best of all, it only took us 20 minutes to walk to Terrapin Point, one of the top  places to visit near Niagara Falls, USA . If you stay at this hotel, I suggest requesting a room on an upper floor. While you can’t see the falls directly from the hotel, you’ll get beautiful views. Plus, you can see the nighttime fireworks from your room, which is convenient if you don’t feel like going out!

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for another good hotel to stay at in Niagara Falls, USA, the   Hyatt Place Niagara Falls  is a great option.

This accommodation is located a little closer to Niagara Falls on the U.S. side, which is very convenient. Also, it is next to Old Falls Street, a small entertainment district where you’ll find great good, shopping, shows, and family activities. If you’re not sure  what to do in Niagara Falls, New York , you can always go there.

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls is also close to the Rainbow Bridge, which you can take to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

While the prices are similar, this hotel isn’t as nice as the Seneca Resort, but it’s still a good option if you need a place to stay overnight.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York

The   DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York   is another accommodation that I recommend on the American side of Niagara Falls. While it’s a bit further away than the previous two hotels, the location is still very good.

The rooms come with nice amenities and they’re very spacious. Some of the rooms offer lovely views of the Niagara River, while others overlook the city. I suggest requesting a riverside room, as it’s a more pleasant view.

Overall, this is a hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, that you can book without hesitation. It’s comfortable, affordable, and clean.

Sheraton Niagara Falls

The   Sheraton Niagara Falls   is one of the hotels in Niagara Falls, New York, that I recommend if you want to be close to the falls without breaking the bank. While it’s not the cheapest option, the price is quite good for the location.

Also, the hotel has a connective corridor to the Seneca Resort, so it’s super easy to go to the casino and enjoy some of the facilities.

The unique thing about the Sheraton hotel is its Reed Beach Club, which has the largest indoor pool in Niagara Falls. So, not only is this a good place to get some rest, but it’s got plenty of amenities to keep you entertained during your stay.

Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls

The last hotel that I recommend is the  Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls , which is a great option for travelers on a budget.

For an inexpensive hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, the location isn’t bad at all. Plus, it’s the best choice if you’re planning on walking over to the Canadian side of the falls since it’s just five minutes from the bridge.

8 Tips to visit Niagara Falls

If you’ve read this far, you should have all the information you need for a  trip to Niagara Falls . Still, I’m including some final tips here so you can make the most of your visit.

1. Plan to visit both sides of Niagara Falls

Instead of wondering  which side of Niagara Falls is better , plan to visit both the American and Canadian falls.

Travel tips Niagara Falls

The easiest way to see both sides is by crossing the Rainbow Bridge. That said, you’re still crossing an international border, so you need the proper documentation, such as a passport,  visa or Electronic System for Travel Authorization . You can check below what type of documentation you need.

If you’re renting a car, check first to see if they allow you to enter another country with the rental vehicle.

2. Book at least two days to visit Niagara Falls

Both sides of the falls are interesting and worth visiting, so make sure you book plenty of time. At least, I recommend spending two days visiting Niagara Falls, and that should give you time to check the most important attractions.

3. Stay in a hotel with a view of Niagara Falls

While there are different  Niagara Falls hotels  on the Canadian and American sides, I highly recommend booking a room with a view of the falls. Fortunately, several hotels offer waterfall views, so try to reserve one on a higher floor.

Niagara falls hotels

On the Canadian side, the hotels with the best views are the  Sheraton on the Falls ,  Embassy Suites ,  The Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls ,  Tower Hotel at Fallsview , and  Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel and Suites .

If your  Niagara Falls itinerary  includes an overnight stay on the American side, I recommend the  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino . Just be sure to reserve a room on a higher floor so you can fully see the falls.

4. Leave everything that can’t get wet in the car/hotel

There are some areas where it’s impossible not to get wet by the  Niagara waterfalls , even if you wear a poncho. That said, don’t let a bit of splash and spray deter you from getting an impressive view of the falls.

One of the best  travel tips for Niagara Falls  is to leave behind anything that could be damaged by water. Either keep it in the car or your hotel room or seal it in a waterproof bag if you’re keeping it on you.

5. Take the helicopter tour of Niagara Falls

A  helicopter tour of Niagara Falls, NY  is an unforgettable experience and the best way to get a good look at the falls. I recommend  this tour  from the American side. While it’s only a 10-minute flight, every second is mesmerizing and you can get a sense of the falls’ magnitude.

If you’re on the  Canadian side of Niagara Falls , I suggest booking  this tour . The 12-minute flight soars over the Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls, and the helicopter is one of the quietest of its kind.

6. Arrive early to find a good spot to watch the Fireworks

The Niagara Falls fireworks are one of the most popular things to see on summer evenings. The show starts every night at 10 pm, although you’ll want to find a spot 30-40 minutes beforehand. If you’re not sure where to view Niagara Falls at night , I suggest the Skywheel (at the Canada side) or Prospect Point (at the American side).

7. Treat yourself to a Niagara Falls buffet dinner

Most Canada  Niagara Falls itineraries  include a visit to Skylon Tower. Besides being a wonderful viewpoint overlooking the falls, the Tower has two excellent restaurants: the Revolving Dining Room and the Summit Suite Buffet.

Ehere to eat in Niagara Falls

We ate dinner at the buffet, and we would definitely eat there again. It’s one of the  top things to do at Niagara Falls , so be sure to  book a ticket  to the Tower in advance. Or do what we did and take  this lunch tour  with a helicopter flight and boat cruise.

The Top of the Falls Restaurant is another place where you can eat while enjoying incredible views of the falls. This one is on Goat Island, on the American side.

8. Come back to Niagara Falls in winter

As I mentioned, the  best time to go to Niagara Falls  depends on what you want to do and see here. While the summertime is popular with most tourists, there is something special about visiting in the winter.

There are way fewer tourists, the prices are lower, and the atmosphere is calmer and more peaceful. That said, I don’t recommend a winter trip for your first time in Niagara Falls since most of the attractions are closed.

Is Niagara Falls worth visiting?

If you’re still wondering if a  visit to Niagara Falls  is worth it, I would say, without hesitation, yes!

While the  best time to visit Niagara Falls, NY  is in the summer, this is also when it’s the most crowded. If you’re  planning a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada , budget enough money and days so you can get to everything.

Despite all the planning and calculating involved, this is a place that you must see at least once in your life.

Is it more cost effective to book tours or do the activities on your own? We like to move at our own pace and not sure a tour itinerary is worth it.

' src=

Good question. It depends on what you want to see. Visiting the attractions on your own is generally cheaper, but there are many tours and excursions that offer discounted rates and additional benefits like guides, snacks, etc. Hope that helps!

What’ is like in May to visit & west are Covid restrictions if any? Are booster shots & vaccines mandatory? What’s the closest airport to the Canada side Marriott or Hilton at the falls?

Hi Eileen, May is a wonderful time to visit! The weather won’t be as hot and there should be fewer crowds. Niagara Falls is following current COVID restrictions, but proof of vaccination isn’t mandatory. The closest airport is the Niagara Falls International Airport.

The Least Crowded Time of Year to Visit Niagara Falls 2023

Voyage Talk

June to August is the ideal time to see Niagara Falls. With average highs in the low 80s, summer is an appealing year. The waterfalls’ mists and winds can make the environment feel colder.

While spending more money and dealing with more people, going in the summer will let you make the most of the weather and attractions. The free Discover Niagara Shuttle runs nonstop throughout the summer, making it simple to get between attractions.

Due to low temperatures, spring and autumn see fewer visitors, yet each season has certain benefits. The local vineyards’ harvest season is in the autumn, while the botanical gardens’ colorful blossoms are brought on by the increasing temperatures of spring.

In the winter, temperatures drop below freezing, closing numerous attractions, including the Maid of the Mist boat trips . However, the chilly weather does result in lower hotel charges.

June-August

High times entail high prices. However, if you don’t mind viewing the falls with many other visitors, you’ll receive a reward with temps between 70 and 80 degrees. Reserve two to three months in advance for the best hotel rates if you intend to stay the night.

September-November

Daily highs in the autumn range from the mid-40s to the low 70s. As early as the end of October , snow is possible. Since the summer, hotel rates have decreased and will do so throughout the autumn. Bear in mind that early October is when Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving. Be ready for closures on the Canadian side of the falls if your trip comes on a holiday.

December-February

Even though the falls never cease, the people and attractions sometimes thin out in the bitter winter. There will occasionally be blizzards. If you want to go now, wrap yourself warm and take advantage of the lower hotel costs.

Spring isn’t exactly a warm season to visit since snowfall may last far into April. However, by May, the 60-degree threshold should be broken. In April, attractions and tours will begin to operate again. The Floral Clock, the Centennial Lilac Garden, and the Botanical Gardens are also covered with blossoms.

Best Time to Visit Niagara Falls on a Budget

The most affordable time to visit Niagara Falls is from November through January. This is the off-season at the falls, so hotels and other travel services are providing steep discounts to generate income.

Consider going to Niagara Falls in the winter if you don’t mind a chill in the air and getting slapped by ice-cold water.

A less expensive winter vacation to Niagara Falls could be more magnificent than an active summer excursion. Visitors may observe how Niagara Falls’ thundering waterfalls can temporarily cease flowing in some places when the temperature falls below freezing during the winter.

Since summer is the busiest travel season, most tourists skip the opportunity to see the enormous falls’ frozen parts. Remember that while river and walking tours are rarely conducted when the weather is cold, if you want to visit Niagara Falls from November through January, you might not have the chance to do so.

aerial photography of waterfalls, an amazing evening view

The Least Crowded Time of Year to Visit Niagara Falls

The spring and autumn seasons are the least crowded at Niagara Falls. This time of year, while school is still in session, families are getting ready for summer vacations in the spring and resting from recent out-of-town trips in the autumn.

As a result, if you dislike crowds, spring and fall are the ideal periods to visit Niagara Falls. When you go in the spring, you’ll enjoy a nice wind and clean, crisp air while you admire the falls’ unadulterated beauty. The brilliant colors of the trees change as the leaves get ready to fall during the autumn months near Niagara Falls.

Additionally, you’ll see that costs for travel and lodging decrease during specific seasons to fill vacant airline seats and hotel rooms. You might note that attractions such as the Observation Tower and excursions surrounding the falls have restricted hours if you go during the spring and autumn.

If you encounter this problem, you may still observe the falls; however, you might have to spend your ticket money on nearby attractions rather than falls excursions.

Worst Time to Visit Niagara Falls

The worst months to visit Niagara Falls are peak seasons: June, July, and early August.

Although the weather is almost ideal for the cooling mist that the falls produce, many tourists sometimes lead to uncomfortable crowds. When you’re not near enough to the falls to feel the cool water on your hot skin, it can be rather hot and muggy.

This will make standing in line to see the falls or to experience activities at Niagara Falls State Park uncomfortable and sticky.

If you visit Niagara Falls during the summer, plan your hotel, transportation, and extra tickets well in advance to avoid the oppressive heat and huge crowds. The last thing you have to do is go across the country just to find that no more tickets are available when you get them.

Waiting until the last minute to purchase may result in exceptional discounts on housing or travel costs, but the chance of these tickets being available is low. So, waiting for a limited-time offer for your travel dates is preferable.

water falls under blue sky and white clouds during daytime

What is the best month to visit Niagara Falls?

June through August is the ideal time to see Niagara Falls. With average highs in the low 80s , summer is a popular time of year. The waterfalls’ mists and winds can make the environment feel colder.

How many days do you need for Niagara Falls?

The minimal vacation duration that we advise is two nights, which will allow you to see most of the Falls and several other local sights. Remember that there are many of fantastic restaurants you might wish to try, some of which have breathtaking views of the Falls.

What months are Niagara Falls open?

The Falls may be seen year-round from Niagara Falls State Park. The Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds are two seasonal attractions in Niagara Falls State Park that are only available from October to November.

Is Niagara Falls better in summer or winter?

Nothing is more spectacular than Niagara Falls in the winter; the water and beauty don’t cease when summer ends.

The Best Times to Visit Niagara Falls

High angle view of a tourboat in the American and Bridal Veil waterfalls in Niagara falls

Thinking of visiting Niagara Falls? It's quite the sight to see! This awe-inspiring destination encompasses three waterfalls – the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls – and straddles two countries – the United States and Canada. The thunder and spectacle of approximately 750,000 gallons of water rushing over every second thrills and amazes about 8 million visitors from around the world each year.

Nothing beats the view plus there are plenty of ways to get up close and personal with the falls. Something is bound to engage every single member of your family, from the youngest to the oldest. Determining the best time of year to visit depends on your travel goals.

The Best Weather in Niagara Falls

Since the falls are situated in the northeast, weather conditions vary widely from season to season and can change quickly. June through August brings the warmest weather with average daytime highs in the high 70s and low 80s. It's peak season so you'll spend more money and face more crowds but on the upside, all area attractions are in full swing. The crowds drop off in the spring and fall but so do the temperatures, typically running between 30 and 60 degrees. Winter is for hardy souls since it's common for the thermometer to dip below freezing.

The Best Time for a Close Encounter with Niagara Falls

May through October, boat tours below the falls are the thing to do. The Maid of the Mist departs from the American side (Ticket prices: $19.95 USD per adult, $11.20 USD per child [6–12 years], 5 and under are free) while Hornblower Niagara Cruises set sails from the Canadian side ($28.95 CAD per adult, $18.95 CAD per child [5–12 years], 4 and under are free; includes a funicular ride to boarding area). The approximate 20-minute tours bring passengers within feet of the cascading falls. Plastic rain ponchos are provided because there's a good chance you'll get wet! Reservations aren't necessary although to avoid long lines you'd do well to avoid peak hours between 11am and 4pm. Patrons are advised to not bring strollers on board.

If you visit the Canadian side of the falls (highly recommended as it offers the best panoramic views), it's possible to in effect go backstage and Journey Behind the Falls . First you take an elevator that descends 150 feet through bedrock to tunnels which lead to viewing portals behind the massive sheet of water. Then you can access Upper and Lower Observation decks at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls. The cost is $21.95 CAD per adult, $14.00 CAD per child (6–12 years), and children under 5 are free. This attraction is open year-round although icy conditions in winter prevent the Lower Observation deck from remaining open due to safety reasons. On the upside, this closure means winter rates are reduced.

Meanwhile, on the American side of the falls, Cave of the Winds offers a similar up close and personal experience. You're delivered via elevator into the Niagara Gorge, then a series of wooden walkways bring you within feet of the crashing Bridal Veil Falls. In colder months, the tour is somewhat abbreviated. It's possible however, even in the depths of winter and when weather permits, to at least take the elevator down into the Gorge and experience Niagara in all its frostiness! Peak season admission is $19.00 USD per adult, $16.00 USD per child (Ages 6–12), and children under 5 are free. Prices are considerably lower the remainder of the year.

When to Visit Niagara Falls for Events

Every evening beginning at dusk, Niagara Falls' natural beauty gets enhanced by a special light show. Since 1925, the Niagara Falls Illumination Board (NFIB) has provided nightly illumination with custom colors tied to significant dates on the calendar – green every hour for 15 minutes on St. Patrick's Day, red, white and blue every hour for 15 minutes on the 4th of July, etc. Meanwhile, firework displays light up the skies from late spring through early fall. Check the seasonal fireworks and color illumination schedule here .

The annual Winter Festival of Lights brightens up the holiday season. Millions of twinkling lights and animated displays transform Queen Victoria Park (on the Canadian side) and other points in the Niagara Parks system from mid-November through mid-January.

The Best Times to See Wildlife in Niagara Falls

The Niagara River Corridor is internationally recognized as an "Important Bird Area" (IBA). Bald eagles, peregrine falcons, ducks, geese, 19-plus species of gulls and more flock here all year long. The Niagara Falls Observation Tower is even outfitted with "bird-friendly" glass which features a special striped design to prevent birds from colliding into it.

When to Visit Niagara Falls to Avoid the Crowds

Tourism climbs in May, peaks in July and August and begins to decline in September. The cooler months in early spring and late fall are typically slower, although some attractions are either unavailable or restricted. Those willing to brave bone-chilling temps during the winter months may get to witness the unique beauty of the famous "frozen falls."

The Cheapest Time to Visit Niagara Falls

Affordable airfare.

Based on historical data collected by the travel search engine Skyscanner.com for 2017 and 2018, flights to Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) – which is 24 miles from the falls – from New York and Los Angeles are cheapest in January. If you're coming from Chicago, however, flight prices drop in September and October. Keep in mind that all family members will need to have a passport to cross the border and visit the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

Affordable Hotels

Historical data collected by Priceline in 2017 and 2018 revealed that July is the most expensive time to visit Niagara Falls no matter which side of the border you stay. The average daily rate for 2–4 star hotels in both Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, NY was $177 USD in July 2018. The summer time frame (June–August) is overall the most expensive with average daily rates ranging from $168–$179 USD. Prices begin to rise in May, but are more affordable ($149 USD in 2018). Comparatively, cooler months (November–January) are typically less expensive with November being the least expensive for the combined areas with an average daily rate of $106 USD. The New York side is typically more affordable than the Ontario side of the Falls. Average daily rate for New York hotels overall is $122 USD compared to $141 USD in Ontario.

If you're looking to cash in points for a free stay any time of year, you can use 45,000 IHG Rewards Club points at the Holiday Inn Niagara Falls — by the Falls, Ontario ; 35,000 Marriott points at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Niagara Falls, NY; and 50,000 Hilton Honors points at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls, NY.

Bottom Line

While what time of year you visit Niagara Falls will determine what you experience, both summer and winter offer their unique charms. Once you marvel at the falls you'll realize what's important is not so much when you visit Niagara, but that you visit. Whenever you go, you won't regret it.

A Brief History of Niagara Falls

Before planning any adventure, it’s always important to know as much as possible about your destination. And with history and origin like Niagara Falls, there is a lot to know.

Here’s a quick crash course on the interesting history of your next dream vacation – Niagara Falls, Canada & US.

Niagara Falls and boat cruise

It is estimated that roughly 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, during a massive melt-off and the extreme flow of water caused by this, the falls we know today came into existence.

And since then, the interest and fascination with the falls have only grown. Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother celebrated his honeymoon at the falls about 200 years ago, and Charles Dickens wrote in 1842 how the falls stunned him into silence.

Essential Niagara Falls Trip Info

Planning your trip to Niagara Falls will take some careful consideration. Factors such as the time of year, the forecasted weather patterns, and travel requirements are just some things you need to know.

Here’s our breakdown of the whens, wheres, and how-tos make visiting Niagara Falls convenient, enjoyable, and most importantly unforgettable.

The Border Crossing at Niagara Falls

Composed of several large waterfalls on the Niagara River, the Niagara Falls span across the eastern coast of the United States and Canada. What makes the falls unique is that they sit right on the border of these two countries.

The American side of Niagara Falls during sunrise

If you choose to visit both sides, you will be crossing international borders so remember to check your visa requirements as border control is strict.

Now separated by the border between the USA and Canada, the largest of the three, the Horseshoe Falls, is situated on Canadian soil. The other two, the Bridal Veil and American Falls, are on American soil.

American Falls is the second-largest of the three waterfalls that together are known as Niagara Falls on the Niagara River along the Canada U.S. border.

With the distinct geographical history and elements of the falls, you can choose to visit them from either country or, even better yet, plan a trip to include both. Visiting the American side of the falls and crossing into Canada if you’re a US national will require no visa.

If you are a non-US citizen you will need the appropriate Canadian eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization Visa). For all your visa questions, iVisa offers the perfect tool.

When to Visit Niagara Falls

Deciding on the best time to visit the falls and their surrounding areas can make or break your trip. And, as with any other natural attraction, tourist influx during certain months also affects your experience.

A quick online search will tell you that the summer months in the region are ideal for any planned trip. For Niagara Falls, this means June, July, and August. The reasoning behind this is the result of higher day-to-day temperatures.

Water flowing in Niagara Falls, Canada in the summer

Although higher temperatures sound great, we are on the fence about this as the mists and breeze from the falls will make you doubt the actual temperatures most of the time.

What the summer months do, however, is cause a massive wave of tourists flogging the falls and the surrounding attractions, towns, and accommodation.

The falls are immensely popular, that’s for sure, but overcrowding everywhere you go can ruin a good vacation.

Niagara falls in the winter

Winter is from November through to the end of February. Heavy snowfall occurs during December and can continue into January. The falls, in a sense, ‘slow’ down and might even freeze over in the extreme cold. Although this is also a beautiful sight to behold, many attractions at the falls shut down.

We recommend you plan your trip for the shoulder few months. These fall in Spring (March, April, and May) and Autumn (September and October). Temperatures are excellent, usually mid-to-high during the days and comfortable at night.

Prices are reasonable for accommodation, restaurants, entertainment venues, and attractions due to fewer tourists.

How to Get to Niagara Falls

Traveling to Niagara Falls can be done in a variety of ways. Most visitors opt to fly to one of the airports near the falls. On the Canadian side, this is Toronto Pearson International Airport, which is about an hour’s drive from the falls.

The Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls, photo taken from above on the Canadian side

If you choose to fly on the American side, you’ll head for Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which is in Buffalo and about a 30-to-40-minute drive from the falls.

Niagara Falls also has its own train station with commuter and travel lines coming in from Toronto, New York, and several other cities. To make your trip more exciting we recommend spending at least one day in Toronto .

Once at the falls, it’s worth renting a car from the many car rental agencies around to make getting around as easy as possible and for added freedom.

But, with cab services in the area and short walking distances between most things (on either side of the falls), renting a car isn’t a necessity.

Exploring Niagara Falls

Any trip to Niagara Falls will be unforgettable, and that’s a fact. Regardless of which side of the falls you visit, you’re in for a good time and a great adventure. Both the Canadian and American sides have their own unique charm and highlights.

The main focal point of your trip is the falls themselves, and while both sides more than meet any expectation you could have, each is distinct and worth a visit.

Explore from Canada: Niagara Falls Activities

On the Canadian side sits the largest of the falls – the Horseshoe Falls. Being the largest of the three falls, it’s a breathtaking scene, and seeing the falls for the first time will remain in your memory forever.

Experience Niagara Falls, Canada

The Canadian Niagara Falls experience is quite different than on the US side for several reasons. On this side of the falls, you can expect a more urbanized approach to the adventure, with a number of amusement park-style attractions close to the falls.

The falls remain the highlight, but what sets the Canadian side apart is its focus on tourism and tourist attractions. This translates into various sightseeing options, different accommodation types, classic streetside cafes, high-end restaurants, and more.

Top Attractions

Treating yourself to some entertaining attractions on the Canadian side of the falls is a must. From Toronto, you can choose from a number of sightseeing tours, unique attractions aimed at family fun, or adventures specifically for you and your significant other.

The Niagara's Horseshoe Falls in its stark, Winter garb. this image shows the power and majesty of this natural wonder. The image was shot from the Skylon Tower in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

There are some exceptional options when it comes to attractions.

Niagara Falls Private Sightseeing Tour

If you’re looking for a scenic and private tour of the area and Niagara Falls, this private sightseeing tour comes top-rated. It boasts the best coverage of the area meaning you’ll get the most out of your trip.

Falls by Day and Night

For a full-day tour of Niagara Falls, Falls by Day and Night stands out amongst others as it is aimed at giving you a proper experience of everything the falls have to offer. It also includes dinner served after the tour ends.

Skylon Lunch Tour

Another great option that pays homage to the setup of the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is the Canada helicopter, boat ride, and Skylon lunch tour. It’s an excellent choice to get in as much of the falls and the city as you can.

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour

The top pick for seeing the falls in all their beauty would have to be the royal Canadian tour and Maid of the Mist boat ride. This is a five-hour day trip that takes you up close to the falls for an exceptional view and feel of the falls.

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls Trip Planning Guide

As far as accommodation choices go, the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is a treasure trove of amazing places. The towering heights of the Hilton Niagara Falls or the Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa in Fallsview offer stunning views of the falls in a deluxe hotel setting.

Or, choose a more boutique accommodation option, the Old Stone Inn Boutique Hotel , which is only a few minutes from the falls. The Redwood Bed and Breakfast is also an excellent option for a more intimate experience.

And if you’re bringing the whole family, we recommend the Great Wolf Lodge Waterpark Resort . It has several family suites and an indoor and outdoor waterpark – perfect for some excitement away from the falls.

Explore from the United States: Niagara Falls State Park

The remaining two falls that makeup Niagara Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls, and the American Falls, sit on the border between New York State and Canada. Although not as large as the Horseshoe falls, these two are both equally as beautiful.

Experience Niagara Falls, USA

Where the Canadian side of Niagara Falls fulfills the need for urban tourism, the side of the falls in the US showcases a totally different perspective.

Niagara Falls USA at sunrise

Visiting Niagara Falls on the US side means you’ll get in touch with nature a bit more than you would on the Canadian side.

Both falls on the US side sit within Niagara Falls New York State Park, making for a more rustic and outdoorsy experience. It’s perfect for nature lovers and those wanting a scenic escape from city life.

The best part is you will get amazing views of the falls and some peace and serenity at the same time.

Just as impressive as the Canadian side of the falls, on the US side, you’ll find some super attractions as well.

Boat Cruise and Cave of the Winds Tour

To get you close to the falls and for a mesmerizing tour, we recommend the USA boat and cave tour . A trip to the Cave of the Winds, which is a series of platforms that lead right to the base of Bridal Veil Falls, is a must.

Niagara Falls USA: Ferry Maid of the Mist and Rainbow Bridge

Guided Falls Walking Tour

With its layout and terrain, the US side of the falls has the advantage of once-in-a-lifetime walking tours as well, our top pick being the guided walking tour of the falls.

Maid of the Mist Tour

Another excellent choice is the Maid of the Mist and Adventure Walking Tour , which combines both a memorable boat trip and an exciting walk around the falls.

Wine Tasting & Vineyard Tour

And if you’re looking for a little bit of relaxation and fun, try the half-day winery tour that features wine tastings at the State Parks vineyards and an optional lunch. Including this in your Niagara Falls trip offers the perfect blend of countryside and waterfront fun.

Where to Stay

Now we must admit, although the US side of the falls focuses more on nature, the accommodation on offer covers every potential type you might want. First, for a luxurious and entertaining hotel choice, we recommend the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino.

Other luxurious hotel options include The Hampton Inn Niagara Falls , which offers a variety of room types including suites. Or The Giacomo in downtown Niagara Falls is the perfect blend of luxury and urban accommodation.

Deciding when to visit Niagara Falls can make your experience truly special. Whether you like the greenness of spring, the liveliness of summer, the colorful fall, or the icy winter beauty, there’s a perfect time for you to enjoy the falls. Plan your trip thoughtfully, think about what you enjoy doing, and get lost in the amazingness of Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls in Winter: The Ultimate Guide (2024)

Posted on Published: November 17, 2022  - Last updated: January 8, 2024

Categories Blog , Canada , City Guides , Niagara , Ontario , Travel Guides

Niagara Falls in winter is one of the best times to visit because you’ll be able to see a partially frozen Niagara Falls. It’s quite the sight to behold in the winter months, surrounded by snow and ice! There’s really nothing like it anywhere else in the world. While I love going to Niagara Falls in the fall , the winter is one of my favourite times of the year to visit.

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada is home to one of the world’s greatest waterfalls. It is one of the most visited places in the world. People flock here to witness its majestic beauty by the millions. An estimated 22 million people visit Niagara Falls each year (including both the Canadian and American sides).

Niagara Falls Winter

As you can imagine, it can get very busy here, especially during the summer months. It’s incredible to visit Niagara Falls in the fall with less crowds. However, it’s such a unique experience to see Niagara blanketed with a layer of snow and ice. To escape the crowds and view Niagara Falls in a whole new light, why not consider visiting Niagara Falls in winter?

As Justin and I live about an hour’s drive from the Niagara region , we hardly consider visiting in the summertime. We’ve both been fortunate enough to visit the Falls on numerous occasions during the warm summer seasons with our families throughout the years.

While it’s spectacular in the summer, Niagara Falls is brilliant in all seasons. Thankfully, the off seasons are a little less hectic, especially during the winter. Is it cold? Yes, pack your parka . Is it worth braving the cold to visit? Of course! Niagara Falls is a spectacular dazzler in the winter.

Niagara Falls Winter: Seeing Niagara Falls Frozen

Niagara Falls in Winter Time - Viewing Niagara Falls covered in snow and ice

One of the main reasons to visit Niagara Falls in winter? You want to see Niagara Falls frozen! Frozen waterfalls are absolutely stunning and offer entirely different scenery in comparison to what they look like during the other seasons. Sections of the waterfall become frozen over. The chilling mist rises up above the Falls and surrounds you at times.

Layers of ice and snow bury the rushing water down below. Only small sections of the Niagara River are visible; you can still observe just how fast the water is flowing. Dense clumps of snow and ice cover the protective fences and barriers, feeling as hard as the concrete beneath them.

Trees and plants are completely frozen and cling to the rocky cliff edges. Seeing Niagara Falls in winter is nothing like visiting in the spring, summer, or fall.

Does Niagara Falls Ever Completely Freeze Over?

Don’t visit Niagara Falls in winter expecting to see the waterfall completely frozen. It gets pretty icy, but it doesn’t completely freeze over. According to Niagara Parks’ official records, the last time it froze over was in 1848 during extremely chilly temperatures and an accumulation of ice glaciers.

It completely stopped the flow of water, so Niagara Falls did freeze over. It hasn’t happened since, and don’t expect it to happen again anytime soon!

When to Visit Niagara Falls in Winter

Frozen Niagara Falls - The American Falls / US Falls in the winter

When is the best time to visit Niagara Falls in winter? If you want to see Niagara Falls frozen or partially frozen, make your way there after it’s been freezing cold for a while. After many days of frigid and freezing weather, Niagara Falls will begin to grow more frozen and icy.

I’ve heard that when it gets really cold that you’ll see huge chunks of ice floating over the waterfall itself. That is beyond cool!  See what I did there!

Niagara Falls in February

Visiting Niagara Falls in Winter: Frozen Niagara Falls

I’ve updated this article as we went to see Niagara Falls in February after experiencing a lot of freezing weather. As always, it was absolutely gorgeous. Niagara never disappoints. The American Falls were mostly frozen over, and the Horseshoe Falls was frozen down below.

Niagara Falls Winter - Canadian Falls in February January March

Clumps of snow and ice were everywhere and covering every surface: barriers, trees, plants, you name it. The water is powerful, as always, no matter the season. Visiting Niagara Falls in February is probably the best time of year to go if you want to see the falls under layers of snow and ice.

Niagara Falls in January

Niagara Falls in January

We’ve also visited Niagara Falls in January. One year in particular, we ventured down to see a winter Niagara Falls to witness the magic. We reached Niagara Falls in the afternoon, which is typically the busiest point of the day in the summer. Depending on how cold it gets, Niagara Falls can be pretty icy and magical in January, too.

Niagara Falls in January

However, there weren’t any crowds of people to battle for a prime viewing spot. Visiting Niagara Falls in winter is way less crowded, cheaper if you’re going to spend the night, and it’s far easier to find a parking spot in any parking lot (and far cheaper!).

As we walked down to the path that runs along the edge of Niagara Falls, we saw only a few people here and there. It was always easy to view Niagara Falls in winter from any location as we never had to wait for someone to move out of the way.

Niagara Falls in December

If you are looking to travel to Niagara Falls in the winter, it’s always a tossup as to whether or not there will be snow and ice in December. There are years where we’ll receive a dumping of snow in November and it lasts straight through the winter season. On other occasions, we don’t get much snow until January.

Visiting Niagara Falls in December can be really fun for the holiday and Christmas festivals. I’ll go into more detail about the OPG Winter Festival of Lights and Niagara Falls Christmas Market under the “festivals” heading of this blog post.

What to Wear in the Winter

Wear layers and warm clothing to Niagara Falls during the winter, especially January and February, the coldest months

Dress for the season, and that means dress warmly. And even more warmly than you think. The mist from the Falls makes it even colder. Definitely pack a warm winter coat , scarf , hat , and mittens/gloves . Layers are your friend.

During your walk along the Falls, you can always take a break and hop inside one of the shopping areas. That’s what we did when we got a little too cold. There are opportunities to get Tim Hortons coffee should you desire a hot beverage. After you’re finished gazing at the stunning waterfall from several places along the path, you might want to get back indoors for a while.

What to Do in Niagara Falls in Winter

Other than seeing the Falls themselves, you might be wondering what else you can do. Thankfully, Niagara Falls is always exciting and alive. There are always plenty of things to do in Niagara Falls in winter.

While some of the main Niagara Falls attractions close down in winter (Niagara City Cruises, White Water Walk, Hornblower Cruises aka Maid of the Mist and the Whirlpool Aero Car are all closed), there are so many attractions that remain open in all seasons.

Journey Behind the Falls

Journey Behind the Falls in Niagara Falls Canada

Journey Behind the Falls, a Niagara Parks attraction, remains open all year long. You’ll have an alternate perspective of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls on this adventure. Take a self-guided walking tour through 130 year old tunnels to experience the power of Niagara.

Journey Behind the Falls in Niagara Falls Canada

There are multiple cave entrances where you can see Niagara Falls plummeting down right before your eyes. The best part of Journey Behind the Falls is the observation deck at the end of the tunnel system. Standing right beside Niagara Falls is an experience like no other.

While I’ve only visited this attraction in the summer and fall before, I am certain that standing beside Niagara Falls in the winter would be absolutely incredible.

Niagara Parks Power Station

Niagara Parks Power Station - Niagara Falls in the Fall

The  Niagara Parks Power Station  is the newest attraction in the city, and you can enjoy different experiences by day and night. It’s open all year long, so you can even visit in the winter. Located on the Niagara Parkway, this Romanesque style architectural masterpiece is truly a sight to behold.

Niagara Parks Power Station

It was the first major power plant on the Canadian side of the Falls, and it opened in 1905. It’s also the longest operating power plant on the Niagara River, open from 1905 to 2006. Nowadays, you can visit this restored landmark attraction with immersive exhibits, unique artifacts, and lots of stories.

Niagara Parks Power Station

Learn about the inner workings of one of the most amazing power plants that harnessed the energy of the Horseshoe Falls and turned it into electricity. You can even experience an interactive control panel where you’ll learn how to harness electricity from water power for yourself. It’s one of the best indoor attractions to escape the cold weather.

The Tunnel at the Niagara Power Station

Want to see Niagara Falls in a way you’ve never experienced before, even if you travel to Niagara Falls regularly? The Tunnel at the Niagara Parks Power Station is a long awaited attraction that’s open at last.

Descend 180 feet below the Niagara Parks Power Station to experience the 2200 foot long tunnel and a new underground perspective of the Falls. And it’s open all year round!

Learn about the history of hydroelectricity in Niagara, plus enjoy never before seen views of Niagara Falls from the viewing platform at the end of the tunnel. Get your tickets to the  Tower and Tailrace Tunnel Tour  for two fun attractions in one.

Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory

Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory in the winter

A trip to the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory is a great way to warm up on a cold winter day. It’s a tropical climate inside, and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful, colorful butterflies fluttering all around.

Take a wander around this gorgeous indoor garden full of lush greenery everywhere you look. Take photos of various species of butterflies as they land on plants or maybe even on you if you’re lucky (it’s good luck to have a butterfly land on you!).

Fallsview Casino

Fallsview Casino

Another fun indoor activity in Niagara Falls in winter is Fallsview Casino . Why not try your luck at the slots of the tables? While Justin and I aren’t frequent casino goers, we will go maybe once or twice a year for a couple of hours (until we lose our money!).

While the slot machines are always tempting, Justin and I really like the electronic roulette machines that are situated around an actual roulette wheel.

Fountain at Fallsview Casino

In the lobby of the casino, there’s this funky looking fountain that lights up all different colors. Many people were taking their photos in front of it, and we followed suit.

Margaritaville Niagara Falls

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Niagara Falls

After you’re done spending your hard-earned dollars at the casino, why not pretend that you’re at a tropical destination? We walked across the street to Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Niagara Falls for some drinks. I know that you might not want to think about drinking a frosty margarita on a cold day, but we were actually a bit thirsty after being indoors at the casino.

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

We went with our friend, Shannon, and we both got the same drink, the “Tropical Hurricane”. Wow, this drink was much stronger than I expected! It was still very fruity and tasty. Funny enough, this was my first time ever frequenting a Margaritaville, despite visiting numerous Caribbean islands.

While the bar wasn’t really busy, we still had a great time chatting among the four of us. Oh, and don’t worry, you’ll get to hear the Margaritaville song….several times. Searching for my lost shaker of salt…

Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower is open for business if you’d like to get an aerial view of Niagara Falls. It’s a revolving restaurant with non-stop gorgeous views out the window.

It isn’t cheap dining up there, but it’s all about the experience. You get admission to the observation deck included with your meal, as well as the fun glass elevator ride.

Clifton Hill

A trip to Niagara Falls isn’t complete without walking up and down Clifton Hill. There are so many amusements and attractions along Clifton Hill, like wax museums, arcades, and indoor mini golf. While some of the attractions are a little cheesy or tacky, it’s oddly charming.

The Niagara SkyWheel is open all year long and you won’t have to wait in any huge lineups. I recommend riding the Niagara SkyWheel at night when the Falls are all lit up.

For craft beer fans, check out Niagara Brewing Company on Clifton Hill. They have award winning beers, as well as local specialties, such as the ice wine beer. Open to the public since 2015, they’re serving up quality brews right in the heart of Niagara Falls, so be sure to stop by for a tasting or a pint.

Go Hiking in the Niagara Falls Area

Hiking the Bruce Trail

Why not escape the city and go for a winter hike in Niagara Falls? Just bring some winter hiking boots , bundle up, and hit the trails. You can go winter hiking at Niagara Glen , which is a super scenic spot near Niagara Falls. The Niagara Gorge is gorgeous in all seasons, and it’s truly a winter wonderland this time of year.

I also recommend exploring the Bruce Trail , which runs for 900km between Niagara and Tobermory , Ontario. You can start at Queenston Heights Park at the Southern Terminus Cairn . It’s the stone monument that signifies the very start of the Bruce Trail, and it’s right there in Niagara Falls.

Snowshoeing in Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for what to do in Niagara Falls in winter, you should try snowshoeing in the city. There are many self-guided snowshoe trails for all skill levels in Niagara Falls. Check out the snowshoe trails at the Whirlpool Golf Course all winter long.

Snowshoe rentals are available on site, or you can bring your own snowshoes and hit the trails with a low cost trail pass. A winter visit wouldn’t be complete without some outdoor activities!

Winter Festivals in Niagara Falls

Thinking about visiting Niagara Falls in winter? Why not time your trip for one of its winter festivals? There are lots of ways to celebrate winter in Niagara Falls, whether you’re viewing millions of twinkling lights or sipping a glass of Niagara’s famous ice wine.

Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls

The Niagara Winter Festival of Lights is an annual tradition with over 3 million lights on the Niagara Parkway, Dufferin Islands and Niagara Falls. There are one of a kind light displays that are interactive works of art.

There are also Christmas lights for the season, light displays in Canadian themes, and even the Falls themselves are illuminated. You can catch the Winter Festival of Lights at Queen Victoria Park. The Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse is bright and all lit up for the season, too.

This year, the OPG Winter Festival of Lights runs from November 12th, 2022 to February 20th, 2023. It runs for 101 nights in total, from the middle of November until the Family Day weekend. You can now see these beautiful lights right through until mid-February. There are so many things to do in Niagara Falls in winter, so make sure that you check out the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights.

Niagara Falls Christmas Market

Niagara Falls Christmas Market

The  Niagara Falls   Christmas Market  is located in downtown Niagara Falls, Ontario. It’s the largest Christmas market in the Niagara region. You’ll find 50 vendors specializing in handmade goods. They operate out of the traditional Christmas cabins we all love to see at Christmas markets in Canada.

There are also over 30 Christmas light displays, including interactive exhibits. The Niagara Santa Claus Parade kicks off the event in mid-November. Then, you can visit the market every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the middle of November to December.

Niagara Holiday Handmade Market

Looking for holiday gifts for that special someone? Check out the annual Niagara Holiday Handmade Market to browse beautiful handmade gifts that you won’t find anywhere else.

There are over 200 vendors, food trucks, wine, coffee, live music, and an art alley. The event runs every year at the end of November, and it’s not to be missed.

Niagara Falls for Christmas or New Year’s Eve

Niagara Falls is such a magical place to visit over the Christmas holiday or New Year’s Eve. The annual Santa Claus Parade is a lively event through the city streets in the middle of November. Then, there’s always an amazing New Year’s Eve concert event in Niagara Falls at Queen Victoria Park.

There are also fireworks and parties in the streets, and most of the attractions on Clifton Hill are open for business. If you’re going to visit Niagara Falls in December, I recommend checking out the New Year’s Eve celebrations if you love music and a great party. However, it will be very busy and crowded on NYE!

Niagara Icewine Festival

Throughout January, you’ll have the chance to attend the Niagara Icewine Festival to sample delicious sweet wine from the local wineries in Niagara on the Lake. Visit the Ice Wine Village (downtown Niagara on the Lake) to sample ice wine, view ice sculptures, go shopping, enjoy music, and taste culinary creations.

With an Insider’s Pass, you can try five ice wine samples and keep your souvenir glass. There are also several gala and dinner events surrounding the Niagara Icewine Festival throughout January and February. It’s the perfect place for a wine tasting in the winter.

Seeing More Frozen Waterfalls

Tiffany Falls Frozen

Niagara Falls also happens to be near the city of Hamilton, the waterfall capital of the world. If you’re still looking for more waterfalls to view in the winter, check out these five epic Hamilton waterfalls (though none are quite as massive as Niagara). This includes the brilliant Tiffany Falls .

Where To Stay in Niagara Falls

It is much cheaper during the winter to stay overnight at any hotels by the Falls. I highly recommend choosing a hotel with a view, especially considering that the waterfall is lit up at night.

  • Embassy Suites Fallsview : Enjoy a brilliant view of Niagara Falls and treat yourself to a luxurious experience. Read reviews from fellow travelers who have visited.
  • Marriott on the Falls : We stayed here for Justin’s birthday once and I can vouch that it was awesome. Read more hotel reviews by fellow travelers who have stayed.
  • Hilton Fallsview Hotel : Soak up the beauty of the Falls right from the comfort of your own hotel room. Here are many more reviews from visitors who have stayed.

Getting to Niagara Falls From Toronto

If you have access to a car, driving there on your own is the easiest way to reach Niagara Falls from Toronto. Need to rent a car? I recommend comparing car rental prices here to find the best rate. You can also check out the best things to do in Toronto in winter before heading down to the Falls.

If not, you can book a tour to Niagara Falls from Toronto that includes transportation, lunch, and some attraction tickets. It’s also possible to take the GO Train from Toronto to Niagara Falls on the weekends, even during the winter time now. However, you’ll have to be mindful of the train times as they only run during certain hours on the weekends.

Traveling from out of town, internationally, or overseas? There are lots of cheap flights to Niagara Falls, New York , and then you can quickly drive across the border to Canada. Take the Rainbow Bridge across to Canada.

Feel free to check out Niagara Falls on the US side and the Canadian side. When you’re over on the American side, you can visit Cave of the Winds, Goat Island, Niagara Falls State Park, and the Niagara Falls Observation Tower in Niagara Falls USA.

Alternatively, it might be easier to find flights to Toronto and then make your way down to Niagara Falls with the ways I suggested above. No matter where you’re coming from, don’t forget to get travel insurance before your trip. It might be a simple fall on the ice that can ruin your holiday, especially without the proper travel insurance.

Hi Lauren! Happy to find your blog and learn more about visiting in January 2024. Planning our 1 day to experience Niagara Falls (four adults) and wanted to run it by you. We are staying in Lundy's Lane area. Does it sound feasible to... Have late breakfast at Fallsview Restaurant; Walk a long the observation trail; Take the Journey Behind the Falls tour: Fallsview Casino and then dinner somewhere close. Anything you would suggest to make it better or add in? Not sure of the proximity/distance between of all these places and would love your insight!

Hi Christine! Those plans are totally feasible! If you have some extra time, you could walk around Clifton Hill - the attractions are pretty kitschy, if the Ferris wheel is your thing you could ride that all year round. I think you have the makings of a great day! Have fun!

Great post on visiting Niagara Falls in the winter.

We were lucky enough to visit Toronto for our 5th wedding anniversary a couple of years ago. This is in March so inevitable the Falls were frozen for our visit but we were so glad they were. The sun was the sky and the blue of the frozen water was so stunning. There was also no-one else around to get in the way of our photos!! Can't imagine visiting in the summer now.

The nearby town of Niagara on the Lake is also a stunning place to visit!

Thank you, Paul! I'm glad you got to experience the Falls in the winter when they were frozen. While it does look really pretty in the summer, there are lots of crowds - in the winter, you get it more to yourself! Niagara on the Lake is lovely, too. It also gets pretty busy in the summer, so it's good to enjoy that in the off season as well!

The power and beauty of the falls are truly awe-inspiring. If you’re planning to Niagara Falls Tour in 2023, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.

niagara falls tours

Niagara Falls Tours – When to Go

Niagara Falls is a year-round destination, but the best time to go depends on what you want to see and do. In the summer months of June to August, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the falls are at their most spectacular. However, this is also the busiest time of year, and crowds can be overwhelming. If you’re planning a summer visit, be sure to book your accommodations and activities well in advance.

If you’re looking for a quieter experience, consider visiting in the spring or fall. The weather is still mild, and the crowds are much smaller. The autumn foliage in the area is also breathtaking, making it a great time for hiking and scenic drives. Winter can be a magical time to visit Niagara Falls, with the falls illuminated by colorful lights and a chance to see frozen ice formations. However, be prepared for cold temperatures and the possibility of snow and ice.

Niagara Falls Tours – How to Get There

Niagara Falls is easily accessible by car, train, or plane. If you’re driving from Toronto or Buffalo, it’s a short and scenic drive to the falls. The Niagara Falls Amtrak station is also conveniently located, with train service from New York City, Toronto, and other cities in the region. If you’re flying in, the nearest airports are Buffalo Niagara International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport, both about a 30-40 minute drive from the falls.

Once you arrive, there are several options for getting around. Walking is a great way to explore the area, with many of the major attractions within walking distance of each other. Biking and scootering are also popular options, with rentals available throughout the area. If you prefer a more leisurely experience, consider taking a guided tour or hopping on the Niagara Falls trolley, which offers a hop-on, hop-off service to major attractions.

Niagara Falls Tours – Where to Stay

There are plenty of accommodations to choose from in Niagara Falls, whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel or a budget-friendly motel. For the ultimate experience, consider staying at one of the hotels overlooking the falls. The Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa and the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel are two popular options, with stunning views and luxurious amenities.

If you’re on a budget, there are plenty of motels and inns in the area that offer clean and comfortable accommodations at a reasonable price. The Comfort Inn The Pointe and the Quality Inn Niagara Falls are two affordable options that are still within walking distance of the falls and other major attractions.

Niagara Falls Tours – What to See and Do

There’s no shortage of things to see and do in Niagara Falls. Of course, the falls themselves are the main attraction. Be sure to take a Maid of the Mist boat tour to get up close and personal with the falls. You’ll feel the mist on your face and hear the roar of the water as you sail right up to the base of the falls. For a more panoramic view, take a ride on the Niagara SkyWheel, a 175-foot Ferris wheel that offers stunning views of the falls and the surrounding area.

There are also plenty of other attractions in the area. The Niagara Falls State Park is a great place to start, with hiking trails, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks. The park also features the Cave of the Winds, which takes you down a series of wooden walkways to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. You’ll feel the power of the falls as you stand just a few feet away from the cascading water.

For a more educational experience, visit the Niagara Falls Discovery Center. Here, you can learn about the geology and history of the falls, as well as the people and wildlife that call the area home. The Niagara Falls Aquarium is also a great option for families, with a variety of aquatic creatures on display.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider taking a zipline ride over the falls or going on a whitewater rafting trip down the Niagara River. For a more relaxing experience, check out the many spas and wellness centers in the area, or take a leisurely stroll through the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve.

Niagara Falls Tours – Where to Eat

Niagara Falls has a wide range of dining options to suit every taste and budget. For a romantic night out, head to the Skylon Tower, which offers panoramic views of the falls and a revolving restaurant that serves up delicious cuisine. The Rainbow Room by Massimo Capra is another upscale option, with a menu that focuses on locally sourced ingredients.

A weekend in Niagara Falls

A weekend in Niagara Falls is a good amount of time to spend getting to grips with the place. The falls are an extremely popular weekend destination for people from both sides of the border, and you'll find lots to keep you occupied over the course of two days. Don't forget to leave your bags behind at a Niagara Falls luggage locker to make your trip easier.

  • You can see the falls for free from multiple viewpoints along the water's edge. But if you really want to experience the roar of the water, take a Journey Behind The Falls. This tunnel winds behind the curtain of falling water, allowing you to experience the awesome power of the waterfall. Prepare to get wet.
  • Another classic way to experience the waterfalls is by boat. Boat tours leave from both the US and Canadian side and take you around the three waterfalls in the area. Feel the mist of the falls on your skin at this iconic attraction.
  • The Whirlpool Aero Car has been a feature of Niagara Falls since 1916. This open cable car runs over the Niagara River above the falls and allows you to see the impressive Niagara whirlpool. If you have a head for heights, this is an unforgettable experience.

Niagara Falls lockers

There are many different ways to enjoy the falls and the town that has grown up around them. But all of them will be far more pleasant if you don't carry more baggage than you need to. Drop off your unneeded bags at a Niagara Falls luggage storage so that you can enjoy your trip to the fullest. Traveling light means you won't have to focus on anything other than enjoying yourself.

Off the beaten path in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is an unabashed tourist town, and it receives plenty of visitors every year. But if you're looking to escape the more obvious attractions, you can find a few hidden gems. Drop off your bags with a Niagara Falls bag storage and seek out some hidden gems.

  • See a truly unique house on the New York side of the falls. Built by a man who claims he talks to God, this brightly colored home is intended to be the last thing all humans see on Judgment Day. Either way, it's a great photo opportunity and a testament to one man's obsession.
  • Electrical pioneer and genuine mad scientist Nikola Tesla was inspired as a child by a photo of Niagara Falls to harness the power of hydroelectricity. This influence is commemorated by a statue of the iconic figure on the US side of the falls. Have your photo taken with the great man and pay homage to his genius during your trip.
  • Check out a spooky local legend at the Screaming Tunnel. This former rail tunnel is reputed to be haunted by the spirit of a young girl from the 1800s who was killed by her father. Now, it's a local tradition to light a match inside the tunnel and wait to hear the screams of her restless spirit. Whether you believe it or not, the tunnel is a unique place to visit and is part of local folklore.

What to do alone in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a popular destination both for romantic couples and families. As such, it can seem like an odd place to visit on a solo trip. But the welcoming town has something for everyone, and traveling solo means you can focus only on the things you most want to do.

  • If you're feeling lucky, the Canadian side of the falls is home to an impressive casino. And the Great Canadian Midway complex aims to please all ages, with rides and arcade games available. Nothing beats a trip that pays for itself, so try your luck at the table games and see if you get lucky.
  • Tours can be a great activity to do on a solo trip. There are tons of different tours that will let you explore the wider region around Niagara Falls. A brewery and distillery tour will let you sample the local produce, and you can even take a 420 tour to learn more about Canada's thriving cannabis industry.
  • Treat yourself to the ultimate in relaxation at one of Niagara Falls' many spas. Massages, facial treatments, and even a healing salt cave are all available at Niagara Falls to get you in tip-top condition.

The best souvenirs in Niagara Falls

Thanks to its popularity with tourists, Niagara Falls has souvenir shops just about anywhere you look. Depending on which side of the falls you visit, you'll be able to pick up classic Canadian or US souvenirs to commemorate your visit. You can buy bottled water direct from the falls, maple syrup, postcards, keychains, and all the usual tourist items. If you're looking for something a little fancier, a bottle of local wine is always appreciated. Visit Wine Rack for a great selection. Niagara Falls is also home to a Hershey's Chocolate World store where you can pick up hundreds of different varieties of the iconic candy.

best time to visit niagara falls 2023

We would love to stay at Great Wolf in Ontario, but one of my kids has an expired passport so I don’t think that’s possible because it’s in Canada. Which hotels would you recommend for families on the New York side, preferably around 200 or $300 a night? Anything with a fun waterpark? Views of the falls I imagine are rather expensive and not possible in my budget. I was told that kids under 16 only need a birth certificate to travel there from the US, though? That would open up my options. Which side is more budget friendly to stay/visit from? Canadian or US?

Is there anything else I should be considering as I plan? Booking Maid in the Mist or otherwise way in advance, for example? Anything else? Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions. The forums are always my go-to when planning a trip. I never would have picked where I picked for my honeymoon otherwise, and it was awesome!

You do only need birth certificates for under 16. Great Wolf Lodge is nice but off the beaten path. There are no falls view hotels on the US side due to geography but many nice hotels very close and you can hear the rapids.

Where you stay depends on budget and what you are looking for. The IS side is a park and Canada is a high traffic, extremely expensive touriat trap. You need a big budget to take two children there. There is a lot to do but it will cost you.

Thursday to Sunday is a short time and you will have plenty to do. You could do one day on each side of the border. One day, aquarium, maid of the mist, cave of the winds, hiking and the next day walk across the border to the Canadian side and spend the day there.

https://www.discoverniagarashuttle.com/

Lots of options and you will have a harder time picking which ones you want to do vs not having enough time. You do not need to book tickets to attractions in advance.

Also not knowing what country you are from, make sure you have a credit card with no international fees and/or CAD currency. I put everything in the credit card so I don't have CAD left over to exchange back.

best time to visit niagara falls 2023

Not quite sure what the point is of saying the Canada side is an "expensive tourist trap" and then direct the OP to expensive tourist trap attractions on the US side?

The OP asked about budget friendly. There are many touristy attractions on the Canadian side vs a park on the US side. Short of lunch, there are the two main attractions on the US side therefore more budget friendly and you are not trapped to spend money. Taking two kids to the Canadian side will easily cost you significantly more money. Every arcade, ferris wheel, wax museum, ride etc adds up and of course the kids want to do everything. To each their own but people should be prepared.

best time to visit niagara falls 2023

Respectfully, marson4, you're making the Canadian side sound like the entire place is overrun by "touristy attractions".

Best Regards

So.... all this stuff is free then?

Why do you seem more interested in attacking opinions than helping the OP?

OP if you don't believe me:

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/tourist-trap-casago-report-niagara-falls-canada-154041921.html

The options of things to do I mentioned are not tourist traps because you have a choice to go and the prices are listed and up front and there won't be 25 other things that cost money all at inflated prices.

@RT yes that area is beautiful although for me, not exactly walking distance from the bridge. I tried to answer the OPs question about things to do on a budget.
