Roger Waters Dropped by BMG After Pink Floyd Co-Founder’s Israel Comments

By Charisma Madarang

Charisma Madarang

Music rights company BMG is preparing to split entirely from Roger Waters following controversial comments he made on  Israel , Ukraine, and the United States,  Variety reports.

According to the publication, the Pink Floyd co-founder and German-based company signed a publishing agreement in 2016 and had plans to release a re-recorded version of the band’s 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon last year. However, the deal was tossed after Thomas Coesfeld was hired as CEO on July 1, 2023, and the record was released by U.K.-based label Cooking Vinyl instead.

A rep for BMG declined to comment to  Rolling Stone.

When speaking to the United Nations Security Council in February last year, the artist denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as “illegal,” but also claimed it was “not unprovoked.” He added, “So I also condemn the provocateurs in the strongest possible terms. There, that’s out of the way.”

The artist has been a longtime supporter of Palestine and a critic of Israel, and over the years, his support of causes such as the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement have led to claims that he is antisemitic. Waters has always denied these accusations.

In an interview with Glenn Greenwald  last November, Waters said he had been “fired” by BMG and portrayed the parting as a result of pressure from the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish nonprofit. A source for BMG told  Variety  that the company does not agree with Waters’ version of events.

Roger Waters Is ‘Antisemitic to Rotten Core,’ Says Former Pink Floyd Lyricist Polly Samson — and Her Husband, David Gilmour, Emphatically Agrees

Samson and Gilmour also called Waters "a Putin apologist" — and a lip-syncer.

Pink Floyd singer-guitarist David Gilmour and his wife, Polly Samson, who wrote lyrics for the band’s later songs, are not pulling any punches about Roger Waters , whose stances on Israel, Ukraine and Russia have alarmed many of the band’s followers in recent years. On social media, Samson called Waters “rotten to your antisemitic core” and “a Putin apologist,” among other things — and Gilmour emphatically cosigned his spouse’s statement, writing: “Every word demonstrably true.”

Most of the epithets lobbed by Samson against Waters had to do with his global political stands, but thrown in, as an aside, was a charge that the Floyd co-founder engages in lip-syncing on tour.

Popular on Variety

Gilmour quote-tweeted his wife’s missive, writing that he considered every word written by Samson against Waters “demonstrably true.”

Waters responded to Samson’s tweet with his own Twitter message, written in the third person, which some followers took as a hint that he is considering legal action. “Roger Waters is aware of the incendiary and wildly inaccurate comments made about him on Twitter by Polly Samson which he refutes entirely,” the message read. “He is currently taking advice as to his position.”

pic.twitter.com/CIIy5r6SyA — Roger Waters (@rogerwaters) February 6, 2023

Waters has given many interviews in recent years that some fans who support Israel and/or Ukraine have considered a last straw. Samson and Gilmour did not say what it was that triggered this explosive statement, but the most likely source of their suddenly public ire is an interview the singer-bassist did in which he criticized his former bandmates for having reunited to record a pro-Ukraine song last year and otherwise doubled down on some of his most polarizing positions.

“I have seen the video” released under the Floyd banner, Waters said, “and I am not surprised, but I find it really, really sad. It’s so alien to me, this action is so lacking in humanity. It encourages the continuation of the war. Pink Floyd is a name I used to be associated with. That was a huge time in my life, a very big deal. To associate that name now with something like this… proxy war makes me sad. I mean, they haven’t made the point of demanding, ‘Stop the war, stop the slaughter, bring our leaders together to talk!’ It’s just this content-less waving of the blue and yellow flag.”

Waters called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “probably the most provoked invasion ever.”

“What everyone in the West is being told is the ‘unprovoked invasion’ narrative. Huh? Anyone with half a brain can see that the conflict in Ukraine was provoked beyond all measure,” he said.

The article found Waters reiterating that he would play in Moscow but never Israel, which, as a supporter of the Palestinian cause, he considers a “genocidal” nation. “Moscow does not run an apartheid state based on the genocide of the indigenous inhabitants,” said Waters. Challenged repeatedly on his anti-Ukraine statements, he said, “You seem to be asking me to see Russia from the current Russo-phobic perspective. I choose to see it differently.”

Waters has had concerts in Poland canceled over his views. In a statement on his website prefacing the interview reprint, he vowed not to back down. “Wild horses couldn’t keep me away,” he wrote, “and neither can this apartheid rabble.” He tore into what he called “an outrageous and despicable smear campaign by the Israeli lobby to denounce me as an anti-semite, which I am not, never have been and never will be.”

Waters, Gilmour and Mason last played together at a Waters show in London in 2011, a rare moment of detente between frontmen who have often been at odds, to say the least, since they last recorded together as Pink Floyd in the early 1980s. Their only other joint appearance since the “Final Cut” album was a reunion set at Live 8 in 2005.

Their business interests, nonetheless, remain aligned, for purposes that include the Floyd catalog reportedly being up for sale at a price in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Although it was Waters’ intent that Pink Floyd not go on when he left the group in the early ’80s, Gilmour, Mason and Rick Wright opted to continue without him under the Floyd banner into the ’90s, enjoying successful followup albums and tours, with Samson drafted to write some of the lyrics in Waters’ absence. Fans have continued to hope for a reunion, even as both Gilmour and Waters have made clear just how extraordinarily unlikely that is, with little coming of Mason’s peacemaking efforts.

Waters first faced charges of antisemitism when he emblazoned a Star of David on an inflatable pig that flew over the audience during an “Animals”-themed segment of his tour, although his response was that he considered the emblem to be a symbol of Israel specifically and not the Jewish people generally.

Roger Waters wears SS uniform, projects ‘Anne Frank’ on screen at Germany concert

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Roger Waters has come under fire for donning an outfit resembling that of a Nazi SS officer while performing in Berlin, Germany.

On May 17, the Pink Floyd co-founder — who has been an outspoken critic of the Israeli government — wore the uniform while playing at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

The ensemble featured a black jacket accented with a red armband and a fake rifle. Behind Waters, 79, floated an inflatable pig that was adorned with Third Reich-style banners with crossed hammers instead of swastikas.

But that wasn’t the only questionable imagery employed by the “Wish You Were Here” singer that evening.

According to local journalists, a screen projected the words, “The show will start in 10 minutes and a court in Frankfurt has ruled that I am not an antisemite,” reports the Times of Israel . ”Just to be clear, I condemn antisemitism unreservedly.”

Screens also flashed the names of victims Waters considers to have been killed by governments, including Iranian woman Mahsa Amini , who was allegedly beaten to death by the country’s “morality police,” George Floyd and anti-Nazi activist Sophie Scholl.

However, it was Holocaust victim Anne Frank’s name being flashed immediately after Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh that caused ire.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center criticized the concert and asked that German authorities prosecute Waters for invoking and distorting Holocaust images.

“Shame on Frankfurt authorities and Mercedes Benz arena in Berlin — a place from where Jews were deported by the Nazis — for providing anti-Semite #RogerWaters this venue for his concert with no concern/care for the Jewish community,” the center tweeted.

The British-born rocker has long supported the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement , which seeks to boycott and divest funds from Israel in an effort to press the Israeli government to change its policies toward the Palestinian population.

In 2014, he criticized the Rolling Stones for performing in Israel.

Waters has also come under fire for his views on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In an interview with Germany’s Berliner Zeitung, Waters defended Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. He also compared the state of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians to the Holocaust.

Novelist Polly Samson, who is married to Pink Floyd member David Gilmour, slammed the interview at the time.

“Sadly @rogerwaters you are antisemitic to your rotten core,” she tweeted, and called him a “Putin apologist and a lying, thieving, hypocritical, tax-avoiding, lip-synching, misogynistic, sick-with-envy, megalomaniac.”

In another interview, Waters claimed to be on a Ukrainian kill list because of his criticism of the war-torn country. Page Six has reached out to Waters’ rep for comment.

Things To Do

Music + concerts, music + concerts | pearl jam brings its dark matter tour to kia forum for a storied night of music, in the first of two nights at the inglewood arena, the seattle band proves once again there is no other group like it..

Now, name another band that can do that, and, well, you can’t because there is no other band like Pearl Jam , as Eddie Vedder , Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Matt Cameron showed once more on Tuesday, the first of two shows at the Kia Forum in Inglewood.

So you go to the show with a faint idea of what you might hear – “Dark Matter,” the band’s 12th studio album released last month, gets a large part of the show – but beyond that, you go with Pearl Jam’s flow.

Deep Sea Diver performs at the Forum in Inglewood on...

Maybe they don’t play your favorite song – I didn’t get to hear “Corduroy” on Tuesday, but so what, I’ll live. In an age where rock and roll is often far more structured than the glorious looseness of its early days, the unknown, unexpected promise of a Pearl Jam show is a thrill in itself.

The band entered in darkness and remained in shadows, delivering almost a prologue of three quieter, older songs, “Ocean” “Come Back,” and “Off He Goes,” in a set that would get a whole lot louder as it ultimately spanned 25 songs over two-and-a-half hours.

“Why Go,” from Pearl Jam’s debut album “10,” paired nicely with the new song “Scared of Fear,” supercharged by Vedder’s passionate vocals and McCready’s frantic lead guitar.

Vedder, whose love of sports is well-known, wore a vintage-style Chicago Bears jersey, No. 34 for the legendary Walter Payton. For him, returning to the Fabulous Forum stirred memories of basketball and rock and roll alike.

“The first time I was here, we didn’t have a lot of dough, and somehow my dad came home from work and said we’re going to the Lakers game,” Vedder told the crowd at the finish of “Wreckage,” a terrific song from the new record. “I was about nine years old and I used to listen to Chick Hearn on the radio. And I believe our seats were about three rows in from the top, right over there.”

He remembered watching Laker legends such as Gail Goodrich and Lucius Allen, as well as the visiting Golden State Warriors’ Rick Barry and Clifford Ray. “But really, the only one I got to see close – the radio booth was up there, and I got to see the back of Chick Hearn’s polyester plaid jacket all night.”

Thinking about that night eventually led to this: Before the show started, Vedder asked one of the crew to find a father and son up in the rafters where he and his dad once sat and bring them down to watch the show from the pit.

That was just one of the great anecdotes he offered between songs – we really could have reviewed his stories if we wanted. The one about seeing, or trying to see, Pink Floyd perform “The Wall” at the Forum in 1981, was wildly funny. But like Eddie, I digress …

Highlights from the middle of the show included “Daughter,” off the second album “Vs,” which appropriately segued into a bit of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2).” The new “Waiting For Stevie” is another strong track from “Dark Matter.”

And “Even Flow” brought everyone to their feet, singing along with Vedder and the band as the fan favorite from “10” rocked as hard as anything the band played all night.

Vedder continued to talk with the crowd, dedicating “Faithfull” to a longtime fan Michelle Castrellon, who had recently died, and spotlighting fans with signs, including the fan who brought his 83-year-old father into the pit with him, or the young woman whose sign announced this was her fifth Pearl Jam show, though the first four were “in the womb.”

After the main set wrapped up with “Rearviewmirror,” with Andrew Watt, their producer on “Dark Matter” joining on guitar, Vedder opened the encore with a solo acoustic version of “Just Breathe.”

“Something Special” started out dedicated to Vedder’s daughter Olivia and her mother – his wife Jill – before he got carried away and also dedicated it to “anybody else’s daughter who is named Olivia and anybody’s daughter who is named anything.”

It’s a sweet song, clearly written by a father for his daughter, that urges the child to be strong in life: “Do it yourself, you’re not the type to need a man,” Vedder sings at one point. “But if you find one, he better know you’re damn special.”

At a concert a few days earlier in Las Vegas, Vedder had delivered a rant about Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s comments about women needing to support their men above all else. Before “Something Special,” he cautiously went there again.

“I don’t want to get myself in trouble and say another word I’ll regret,” he said as the crowd laughed. “Maybe I’ll say this: I think in the future is there’s gonna be a woman in the NFL. And the interesting thing is she’s gonna be the kicker.”

From there, the show raced to its finish. “Leash” rocked hard, demonstrating the punk rock roots of the band. “Alive,” which is perhaps Pearl Jam’s signature song, was mighty and magnificent. A cover of the Who’s “Baba O’Riley” had the crowd all singing its “Teenage wasteland!” chorus and was dedicated to the Who’s Pete Townshend, who turned 79 on Sunday.

Then, with “Setting Sun,” the night wound down to its finish. It’s a song about a lover pleading for more time with his beloved, but it speaks well to the bond between a band like Pearl Jam and their dedicated fans.

“May our days be long until kingdom come / We can become one last setting sun,” Vedder sang in its final verses. “Let us not fade / let us not fade.”
