How will the PGA TOUR LIVE offering on ESPN+ be different starting in January?

The inaugural season of PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+ will offer golf fans an unprecedented amount of live coverage, with more than triple the number of hours – adding more than 3,200 new hours of live streaming available for a total of more than 4,300 exclusive hours and expanding from one feed to four dedicated feeds per day for most tournaments. With the launch also comes new tournaments that have not been shown on PGA TOUR LIVE in the past, a redesigned look and graphics package and streaming feeds that bring fans a unique viewing experience.

What will the new PGA TOUR on ESPN+ feeds be like?

pga tour live commentators today

Beginning with The American Express (Jan. 20-23, 2022), PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+ will offer fans four live feeds for each tournament:

  • Main Feed: primary tournament coverage featuring the best action from across the course;
  • Marquee Group: new “marquee group” showcasing every shot from each player in the group;
  • Featured Groups: traditional PGA TOUR LIVE coverage of two concurrent featured groups;
  • Featured Holes: a combination of par-3s and iconic or pivotal holes, like the island green 17th hole at THE PLAYERS Championship and the stadium-style 16th hole at the Waste Management Phoenix Open

When network television coverage begins on GOLF, NBC or CBS, the four streams will pivot to two featured groups and two featured holes so fans can continue to engage with PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+ in addition to the telecast.

Each day, ESPN+ will be the first place for fans to watch PGA TOUR coverage.

Will this be offered for all PGA TOUR tournaments?

pga tour live commentators today

Yes, PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+ will include live coverage of 35 tournaments in 2022 – from the TOUR’s Hawaii events in January through the FedExCup Playoffs – with at least 28 events having four full days of coverage and four simultaneous live feeds each day.

PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+ will kick off on Jan. 6 with the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, followed by the Sony Open in Hawaii from Honolulu one week later. Both will be covered on PGA TOUR LIVE for the first time with Featured Groups coverage in the mornings, followed by Featured Holes in the afternoons.

Jim Nantz talks to Jack Nicklaus in the CBS Sports studio at the 2021 Memorial Tournament

CBS Sports has covered the PGA Tour for over half a century, so it’s no surprise that the calibre of its broadcast team is among the best in the business. From its on-course reporters to its analysts and experienced play-by-play announcers, the team is filled with expertise and experience.

Here are the personnel that make up the CBS Sports golf broadcast team.

Jim Nantz – Lead Host

Jim Nantz broadcasting during the 2023 Memorial Tournament

Jim Nantz is the lead host of CBS Sports' golf coverage

Three-time Emmy award winner Jim Nantz signed for CBS in 1985 and joined its golf broadcast team a year later as an on-course reporter. In 1994, he became the anchor, where he worked alongside Ken Venturi until 2002. Five years later, Nantz performed the role with Sir Nick Faldo until the six-time Major winner retired in 2022 , leaving Trevor Immelman to step into the position.

During his time on the golf broadcast team, Nantz has hosted The Masters since 1988 and the PGA Championship for over 30 years, and is known for his signature phrase, “Hello, friends,” which he uses at the start of each broadcast.

He has also played a prominent role on the broadcaster’s NFL coverage, including hosting the Super Bowl on several occasions.

Trevor Immelman – Lead Analyst

Trevor Immelman broadcasts at the 2023 Memorial Tournament

Trevor Immelman joined CBS Sports in 2019

South African Trevor Immelman had a distinguished playing career, with victory at the 2008 Masters the highlight, but he started turning to life behind the mic in late 2019 when he joined CBS Sports as its tower analyst.

At the end of the 2021/22 PGA Tour season, he was named the broadcaster’s lead analyst, which is the role he holds today.

Even with that responsibility, he still found time to captain the International team at the 2022 Presidents Cup . Despite defeat, Immelman won plaudits for the job he did, which saw his largely inexperienced group run the Americans far closer than anticipated.

Ian Baker-Finch - Analyst

Ian Baker-Finch before the 150th Open

Ian Baker-Finch has been at CBS Sports for 16 years

Australian Ian Baker-Finch turned professional in 1979 and went onto win 17 titles, including the 1991 Open. In the years that followed, he suffered a dramatic slump in form that his game never recovered from, and was eventually hired by ESPN and ABC Sports in 1998 on commentary duties.

He later became lead analyst on ESPN and hole announcer on ABC Sports, stepping in as lead analyst where necessary.

He joined CBS Sports in 2007, where he has been since, serving the role of analyst. Despite those duties, he has still been involved in high-profile events, notably as Team Captain of the Australian men’s and women’s golf teams at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics.

Frank Nobilo - Analyst

Frank Nobilo is an analyst with CBS Sports

New Zealander Frank Nobilo claimed 14 professional wins over a career spanning 24 years. However, after retiring in 2003, he joined the Golf Channel, where he worked as a studio analyst.

Between 2012 and 2014, he was also occasionally seen on NBC standing in for Peter Jacobsen, before joining CBS Sports as an analyst in 2015, becoming a full-time analyst in 2020.

Dottie Pepper – Lead On-Course Reporter

Dottie Pepper before the 2023 Masters

Dottie Pepper had a successful LPGA Tour career before turning to broadcasting

Two-time Major winner Dottie Pepper claimed a total of 17 victories on the LPGA Tour between 1988 and her retirement from the professional game in 2004. From there, she moved into broadcasting, initially joining the Golf Channel and becoming its lead analyst.

She was also an on-course commentator/analyst for NBC Sports between 2004 and 2012, and, after a spell with ESPN, she signed for CBS Sports in 2016 as an on-course reporter and analyst and is nowadays the broadcaster’s lead on-course reporter.

Mark Immelman – On-Course Reporter

Mark Immelman before the 2019 PGA Championship

Mark Immelman is an on-course reporter for CBS Sports

Unlike his younger brother Trevor, Mark didn’t reach the professional ranks, but still represented Columbus State as an amateur before moving into golf instruction, with Larry Mize , Loren Roberts, Scott Brown and Patton Kizzire among those who have benefitted from his tuition.

He also held the role of Head Men’s Coach and Director of Golf at Columbus State University between 2001 and 2021.

Nowadays, he is best known as an analyst and on-course reporter for CBS Sports after gaining valuable experience working on SuperSport TV in South Africa and Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio.

Colt Knost – On-Course Reporter

Former pro Colt Knost is now an on-course reporter

Colt Knost spent 13 years as a professional, winning twice on the Korn Ferry Tour after previously claiming victory at the 2007 US Amateur, but it’s as one of the on-course reporters for CBS Sports that he has really begun making his name.

The American dabbled in on-course reporting for the broadcasting giant in 2019, a year before he quit the professional game, and he impressed enough to be given a more regular role ahead of the 2021 PGA Championship.

The former World No.1 amateur also co-hosts GOLF’s Subpar podcast and has a show on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.

Amanda Renner – Reporter

Amanda Renner signed for CBS Sports in 2017

After graduating from Hofstra University with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, Amanda Renner began her career as a sideline reporter for Verizon Fios Channel 1 on college sports, then moved to MSG Network as a reporter.

In 2011, she joined the PGA Tour as an in-house reporter, before performing a similar role at Callaway Golf from 2016.

In 2017, she signed for CBS Sports, initially as a reporter on select golf tournaments, before taking on the role full time the following year. She has also worked as a sideline reporter on CBS Sports’ NFL coverage and is also a reporter on The Match at Turner Sports.

Andrew Catalon – Play-By-Play Announcer

Andrew Catalon has been with CBS Sports for over a decade

After graduating from Syracuse University, Catalon began his broadcasting career as sports director at Vermont TV station WVNY before becoming primary sports anchor at WNYT in Albany, New York.

Since joining CBS Sports full-time in 2013, Catalon has worked as play-by-play announcer on golf coverage, the NFL and NCAA men’s basketball. He began hosting PGA Tour events in 2020 and has been the broadcaster’s announcer for The Masters since 2021.

Verne Lundquist - Announcer

Verne Lundquist is one of the most loved sports broadcasters in America

The veteran is one of America’s most beloved and recognisable sports broadcasters, and has become synonymous with CBS Sports’ coverage of The Masters, missing only one edition in 40 years.

During Lundquist's time with CBS, which he joined in 1983, he has broadcast on 20 sports, including NFL, college football and NCAA basketball. He was the lead play-by-play announcer for figure skating at the 1992, 1994, and 1998 Winter Olympics, too, and occasionally worked with lead analyst John Madden on the broadcaster’s NFL coverage.

His talents were recognised in 2007 when he was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame. Nine years later, he claimed another prestigious award – the Sports Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

In November 2022, Lundqvist announced his coverage of the 2024 Masters will “likely be my last”.

8 things you should know about CBS' Amanda Balionis

During CBS’ Masters coverage, viewers were able to see a handful of veteran faces from past broadcasts. A face maybe not as familiar on the CBS team was interviewer Amanda Balionis, who covered her second Masters. The 31-year-old Balionis conducted interviews on the range early in the week and post-round during tournament days.

Here are eight things you should know about Amanda Balionis:

She’s been doing this golf thing for a while.

Before Amanda joined CBS in 2017, she was hosting digital content for Callaway Golf and remains part of the Callaway team. Prior to joining Callaway, she was a reporter for the PGA Tour for five years, producing and reporting on tournament highlights and live events. So the woman knows the game.

She’s a Pennsylvania girl at heart.

Balionis was born in Pittsburgh and moved to Lancaster when she was 10. Though she now lives in San Diego, she still considers Pennsylvania home.

She’s no stranger to competitive sports.

Balionis played Division II volleyball before transferring to study broadcast journalism at Hofstra University.

She’s a certified yoga instructor.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Amanda Balionis (@balionis)

While working for the PGA Tour and residing in Jacksonville, Fla., Amanda got her 200-hour yoga teacher certification. So you know...if this broadcast thing doesn’t work out...

She’s crazy for dogs.

Amanda makes it a point to volunteer at a no-kill animal shelter in every city she visits. She then documents all of the good boys and girls on her Instagram advocating for adoption.

She’s tight with her CBS family

In an interview with Golf Digest in 2017 , Balionis said that Jim Nantz has been generous with advice and she’s received golf lessons from Peter Kostis. Not a bad collection of mentors.

She’s got a sense of humor.

After a meme went viral of Paulina Gretzky staring down Amanda and Dustin Johnson, the two ladies posted this photo together.

There's more football in her future.

In 2018, Amanda’s role with CBS evolved to include sideline reporting for select football games throughout the season. This year she also covered her first Super Bowl as CBS’ first-ever social media correspondent.

NBC Golf officially announces staff changes for 2023 PGA Tour coverage

New year, new NBC … or something like that.

On Tuesday afternoon, the network officially announced its PGA Tour broadcast lineup for 2023, confirming a slew of staffing changes that had been reported in recent weeks. The network’s announcement comes ahead of this weekend’s Sentry Tournament of Champions , the first broadcast coverage of the new calendar year for NBC.

Smylie Kaufman and Brad Faxon lead the charge among NBC’s new hires, joining the network in on-course analyst and “hole announcer” roles, respectively. Despite joining the network anew in 2023, Faxon and Kaufman bring a wealth of experience to NBC, rejoining the network after stints in recent years. Kaufman worked most recently with NBC this past season, serving as an on-course analyst for the network’s USGA championship coverage, among other events in 2022. Faxon was with the network in the early 2010s but left for FOX’s USGA Championship coverage in 2015. He has worked in various media roles, including as a host for SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, since NBC purchased back the USGA rights from FOX in 2020.

NBC makes official the hirings of Smylie Kaufman and Brad Faxon alongside the promotions of Curt Byrum (hole announcer), Damon Hack and Cara Banks (interviewers). New faces will start the season this weekend at the Sentry TOC. — James Colgan (@jamescolgan26) January 3, 2023

In addition to Kaufman and Faxon’s hirings, the network announced the promotions of longtime analyst Curt Byrum and interviewers Damon Hack and Cara Banks. Byrum, who will be one of the network’s “hole announcers” in 2023, enters his coverage of the men’s game after years in the same role for the network’s LPGA coverage; while Hack and Banks elevate into the role vacated by Kathryn Tappen.

The changes come after the network did not renew the contracts of longtime analysts Gary Koch and Roger Maltbie , among other staffers, amid a reported $1 billion in NBCUniversal budget cuts. Koch and Maltbie finished their NBC careers with a warm on-air serenade during December’s PNC Championship.

Mark Rolfing at the Ryder Cup.

New NBC contract in hand, Mark Rolfing is eager for his next chapter

The top of the ticket for NBC remains largely unchanged, per the network’s release. Longtime play-by-play man Dan Hicks will continue to serve alongside lead analyst Paul Azinger, and both men will be joined by on-course analysts John Wood, Notah Begay and Arron Oberholser. (Wood, in particular, has been a revelation, helping to offset the loss of fellow caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay as he returned to Justin Thomas’ bag in early 2022.)

Coverage for the 2023 season will begin for NBC on Thursday evening.

2024 RBC Canadian Open TV schedule, live stream, where to watch, tee times, channel, radio, golf coverage

The canadian open takes center stage this week hoping to follow the fireworks of last year's tournament.

rbc-canadian-open-new-flag-g.png

The 2024 RBC Canadian Open looks a little different this year as the tournament returns to Hamilton Golf & Country Club for the first time since 2019 and seventh time in event history. Five years ago, it was Rory McIlroy who blitzed the field by seven for the first of his two Canadian Open titles, but last year, it was Nick Taylor who became a local hero.

Beating Tommy Fleetwood with a 72-foot eagle putt on the third playoff hole, Taylor became the first Canadian in 69 years to claim his home country's open. Taylor immediately vaulted himself into legend status with the win and ensuing celebration -- so much so that his silhouette is now part of the tournament logo.

Canadians will hope to break another drought this week as countrymen have not won the Canadian Open in back-to-back years since 1913-14. The field is littered with those representing the maple leaf Mackenzie Hughes appearing to be the most likely to off the feat. He will have to chase down 54-hole leader Robert MacIntyre with Fleetwood among a chasing pack.

The Memorial picks 2024: Best bets for PGA Tour golf this week

By cody williams | jun 4, 2024, 11:59 am edt.

the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

Few events on the PGA Tour schedule get the blood flowing quite like the Memorial Tournament. Jack Nicklaus' hosted event at Muirfield Village in Ohio is an immaculate setup that truly offers a great test every year, and this will be no exception with Scottie Scheffler headlining the 2024 field as the favorite with the likes of PGA champion Xander Schauffele and defending Memorial champion Viktor Hovland entering seemingly having found his form, among others.

Canada was none too kind to our best bets and expert picks and we're hoping that a change of scenery to Dublin, OH will help our Memorial picks. After all, it's hard to get more of a gut punch than two solid bets coming up a stroke short of hitting. Not to mention a collapse from Mac Meissner hurting us as well. But alas, we move forward.

These are our expert picks and best bets for the Memorial Tournament this week, and boy do we ever need a good week heading into the U.S. Open the following week.

Note:  All odds are courtesy of BetMGM unless otherwise noted. Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change. For more betting picks and advice, check out BetSided . (BetMGM placement odds are not available as of initial writing and will be updated once populated.)

Golf betting record in 2024 through Canadian Open: 15-124-0, -38.93 Units (1-51 on outrights and longshots | -4.6 units at Canadian Open) | One and Done Total for 2024: $6,897,527 (Aaron Rai at Canadian Open, $152,750)

If you or someone you know has a gambling problem and wants help, call 1-800-GAMBLER.

The Memorial Tournament expert picks: Winner, Top 10 and One and Done

Top 10 pick for the memorial tournament: keegan bradley (+333).

We need to appreciate both how well Keegan Bradley has been playing of late and, more importantly for this week, how well he should fit what we're going to see at the Memorial. Bradley comes in having finished T21 at Wells Fargo, T18 at the PGA and then T2 at the Charles Schwab in his last three starts. While his last two starts at Muirfield Village have been a T30 and T37 finish for Bradley, the form right now suggests better things coming. He's seventh in this field on SG: Approach over the last 20 rounds, Top 15 on approach from 175-225 yards, sixth in Par 5 scoring over the last 20 rounds, and has been a slight gainer with the putter over that span. Top 10 is aggressive but I love the way he could pop this week.

Winner pick for the Memorial Tournament (0.5 Units): Viktor Hovland (+1800)

Obviously, Viktor Hovland is the defending champion as he essentially started a torrid finish to his 2023 season at Muirfield Village. He was lost to start the season as he tried to make some swing changes but a reunion with Joe Mayo has yielded quick positive results. He was a middling T24 at Wells Fargo but then was in contention at the PGA Championship until the 72nd hole before finishing solo third. Hovland gained a little more than 10.5 strokes ball striking but also with his short game at the PGA. He's also best in this field over the last 20 rounds on approaches from 200-225 yards and fourth from 175-200 yards. The big concern would be his short game but the reunion with Mayo seemed to fix that instantly, so I'm buying in when Hovland's odds could be even shorter if he hadn't struggled earlier in the year.

One and Done pick for the Memorial Tournament: Viktor Hovland

Even if Hovland isn't holding the trophy for the second straight year, it's going to be a good week for him. It feels like he found the special sauce we saw at the end of last year and that makes him a perfect fit for Muirfield Village this week.

The Memorial picks: More best bets for PGA Tour this week

Si woo kim and billy horschel to finish top 30 at the memorial tournament (+200, draftkings).

Si Woo Kim has been stellar at the Memorial Tournament historically with no finish outside the Top 20 in his last four starts, including finishing solo fourth at this event last year. He's also sixth in SG: Approach over the last 12 rounds and third in Good Drive Percentage over the last 20 rounds in this field. So asking for a Top 30 isn't a huge task for him, nor is it for Billy Horschel. The 2022 champion at this event, Horschel has found his groove again of late. He comes in finishing T8 and T24 at the PGA and Charles Schwab, respectively. He's gained more than 3.0 strokes putting in each of those events but has also gained on approach. More importantly, he also has two more Top 15 finishes in his last five starts at the Memorial, so I love for him to get it done with a nice showing this week too.

Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg and Patrick Cantlay Top 20 Parlay (+399, DraftKings)

When it comes to Morikawa and Cantlay, this is banking on their history at this course. They finished 1-2 at this event in 2021 while the latter is a multi-time winner at this event who also finished T3 in 2022. Morikawa has gotten things rolling again, so I have no worries. And while Cantlay has looked out of form, a place like this could awaken one of the most talented players in the world. As for Ludvig Åberg, the knee issue worries me. Having said that, the fit remains stellar. He's first in SG: Off-the-Tee, sixth in SG: Approach, first in putting on bentgrass, second on approach from 175-200 and 200-225 yards, and 10th in Par 5 scoring over the last 20 rounds. He could contend this week if the knee holds up but we'll play it somewhat safe in this Top 20 parlay.

Lee Hodges to finish Top 20 at the Memorial Tournament (+275)

I'm eyeing Lee Hodges as a huge sleeper this week. He finished T12 at the Memorial last year and comes in with a pair of T12 finishes and a T24 in his last three starts, including being Top 15 at the PGA Championship. Over the last 20 rounds, he's 17th in SG: Approach in this field and is 12th in SG: Putting over the last 16 rounds. It's not necessarily the perfect profile but his recent run of strong finishes combined with how he played the Memorial last week is enough to fully catch my eye.

Longshot pick to win the Memorial Tournament (0.1 Units): Lee Hodges (+22000, FanDuel)

If we're going to pick a longshot, let's go really long with Hodges. Look, it's a loaded field at the Memorial but everything I just said about Hodges suggests he could be live to make some noise this week. Getting him at 220/1 odds feels like a misprice that we have to sprinkle on in hopes of taking advantage of it.

One Year After Golf's Wildest Day, LIV Golf Shows No Signs of Slowing Down

Bob harig | 1 hour ago.

Jon Rahm and LIV Golf are midway through a third season with plans for next year and beyond.

The man who first reached out to make a deal with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia has since resigned from the PGA Tour Policy Board in frustration over the ensuing negotiations.

The popular Tour player who was vociferous in his criticism and dislike of LIV Golf for the better part of a year softened his stance, resigned from the board, tried to get back on and is now among those pushing for a deal.

The game’s biggest name, who for years appeared indifferent to the business of the PGA Tour, was hastily added to the policy board at the urging of his peers, without a term limit.

And the PGA Tour, for the majority of its existence a non-profit membership organization, formed a for-profit arm that has already received $1.5 billion of investment with an equity program set up for players—with more to come.

A good bit has changed in the year since the shocking “framework agreement” was announced on the Tuesday morning of the week prior to the U.S. Open, with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan appearing on camera with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF—which funds LIV Golf—pledging to put their differences aside.

What hasn’t changed? LIV Golf.

Yes, the league added a 13th team, captained by its biggest offseason signing, Jon Rahm. Longtime recluse Anthony Kim emerged to take a wild card spot in the 54-player lineup. Bryson DeChambeau has found his game, contending in two major championships this year.

But the idea that LIV Golf would be shuttered, diminished or marginalized—all surmised or suggested in the aftermath of the deal—has not materialized.

In fact, LIV Golf has soldiered on, adding C-suite executives, signing sponsorship deals, putting together a schedule for 2025 and beyond.

“The spigot is now wide open for commercial sponsorships, blue-chip companies, TV networks,” said Greg Norman, the Hall of Fame golfer who is LIV Golf’s CEO and commissioner. “LIV is and will continue to be a standalone enterprise. Our business model will not change. We changed history and we’re not going anywhere.”

Norman said that to stunned LIV Golf staffers in the aftermath of the June 6 agreement a year ago. His comments were viewed with immense skepticism as some wondered if he would survive with a “merger” or alliance. Norman, like almost everyone in the game, was unaware that a deal was going on. And he was somehow pledging that LIV Golf would be better and not going anywhere?

So far, Norman, who maintains he is not privy to PIF’s negotiations with the PGA Tour, has been correct.

Revolving board seats, one PIF meeting

Jimmy Dunne, who first reached out to Al-Rumayyan with a text in the spring of 2023, resigned from the Policy Board last month. Rory McIlroy, who said he’d “retire” before ever joining LIV Golf, has called for a deal between the parties. Tiger Woods was added to the policy board as a player director last summer. And Strategic Sports Group, a private equity company, pledged up to $3 billion, with an initial investment of $1.5 billion in January.

But negotiations with the PIF have, by most accounts, been sporadic. Woods and the other player directors on the board did not meet with Al-Rumayyan or anyone from the PIF until March. Player directors such as Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati said as late as that meeting in March that they were not even aware of what the PIF wanted as part of a deal.

McIlroy, at the PGA Championship, expressed concern over Dunne’s departure. But Jordan Spieth, a player director who in February suggested that PIF investment was no longer necessary, said: “I think the narrative that things are in a bad place and are moving slowly and some of the things that are asked to me or said are untrue. I know that it's false, actually. Things are actually moving positively from both sides. I think ultimately we'll end up in a place where professional golf is maybe the best that it's ever been. I think both sides believe that.”

Nobody knows what that means.

Will LIV players be permitted to return to the PGA Tour in any limited way? Will there be a separate competition, as McIlroy has proposed, that brings together all of the top players from around the world outside of the major championships?  Could LIV Golf’s schedule be reduced and folded into a new PGA Tour Enterprises endeavor? Played in the fall? Continue to run concurrently?

Those are just ideas, none of which seem to be thwarting LIV’s efforts to keep doing what it is doing.

“We know it’s going to be here, bigger, badder and better than ever before,” DeChambeau said. “It’s just going to keep growing over the next five to 10 years.”

LIV hiring while hunting for money

LIV Golf is playing the eighth event of its 14-tournament 2024 schedule this week in Houston. Unlike its original intent to avoid some of the higher profile PGA Tour events, it is being played the same week as the Tour’s Memorial Tournament, the event hosted by Jack Nicklaus.

The idea that LIV is “additive” as Norman has said on several occasions is counter to the scheduling. LIV’s tournaments on the CW Network are played in the same 1–6 p.m. ET time zone regardless of location and on tape delay when overseas. That is the traditional time slot for PGA Tour events as well, and forces those who might want to watch both to either choose or switch back and forth.

Whether LIV’s decision to play against Nicklaus’ longtime tournament is out of defiance or simply a desire to play closer to the major championships is unclear—LIV is also playing in Nashville the week after the U.S. Open when the PGA Tour has another signature event, the Travelers Championship. (Also, the Memorial has traditionally been two weeks prior to the U.S. Open and switched dates with the RBC Canadian Open this year as part of the Tour’s signature event plan.)

While it has attracted a core of devoted and sometimes defiant supporters, LIV has had modest success via television ratings and mediocre attendance, save for a couple of its international venues. Sports Business Journal reported increases on linear TV for its first two events this year on the CW Network over 2023, to more than 400,000 viewers for its first event in Mexico. A week later, LIV averaged 297,000 viewers in Las Vegas.

Those figures do not include streaming, which LIV Golf says have increased over last year and undoubtedly would give them far better numbers. LIV streams on numerous worldwide outlets including its own website. The first rounds are not available on linear TV and LIV’s most recent events in Australia and Singapore were not broadcast live, but also had a streaming audience that played overnight in the United States.

LIV has also announced numerous sponsorships in recent months including an official cap with New Era and a technology partner in Google Cloud, plus more than a dozen team partnerships.

But none of these agreements appear to be similar to the multi-million-dollar deals that the PGA Tour secures each week, enabling all of its purses and television production to be paid for before one ticket is sold. LIV Golf, for example, is not getting a huge rights fee from the CW Network; that means it must pay for its own production costs.

The team deals are important because the 13 teams are expected to subsist on their own, with only small backing from the league itself. Each team is responsible for its own travel for players, caddies and staff and for paying team contracts to players.

Aside from team prize money—which is only paid to the top three teams each week and will see all teams paid at the season-ending team championship—the best revenue sources are sponsorships or hospitality deals, which teams are allowed to negotiate.

Clearly that has been more of an appetite for LIV Golf in overseas, underserved markets. The event at Valderrama in Spain last year was popular and promises to be even more so this year with Rahm’s presence.

Tournaments in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and England have also attracted large gatherings, with the event in Adelaide a huge hit in each of the past two years. LIV Golf reported 94,000 spectators for the week at its Adelaide event in April, and the reason is understandable: star golfers such as DeChambeau, Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and other top LIV players did not typically visit those places when they played on the PGA Tour.

Peter Uihlein hits a tee shot during the second round of LIV Golf Singapore golf tournament at Sentosa Golf Club in 2024.

Hence, there are already rumblings that LIV’s 2025 schedule will see far more international datelines. It’s possible that as many as nine of the 14 events could be played outside of the United States.

“I think there's a lot of things that are going to transpire over the next five or 10 years,” said Mickelson at the LIV event in Singapore. “I'm very bullish and excited about what that means for LIV Golf ... I just see that the game of golf is going to grow on a much more global basis because of the excitement and the presence that LIV Golf has.”

Whether or not the financial bleeding subsides depends a lot on whether or not the franchise model catches on. The idea is for LIV to sell its 13 teams, something that has yet to occur and likely is not helped by the uncertainty of the negotiations. Just as RBC, the title sponsor of the Canadian Open, said it is waiting to see what transpires before re-signing with the PGA Tour, it makes sense that a potential team owner wants to be sure that LIV will still be standing or at least operating to somewhat near the same level.

LIV proceeds as if it will. Of the 13 teams, 10 have general managers that run their affairs, with smaller sponsorship deals used to shore up finances in addition to the team purses. Those GMs, such as Jeff Koski, who is Rahm’s agent and now also in charge of his Legion XIII team with LIV, run the teams as they see fit, with input from the captains.

“LIV Golf is here to stay,” said Lawrence Burian, LIV Golf’s chief operating officer, following the signing of Rahm. “The addition of Jon reemphasizes that our league is not slowing down. We are continuing to invest and build aggressively for LIV’s long-term and exciting future.’’

Burian was hired from Madison Square Garden last year and the appointment was announced the day after its season-ending team championship in Miami.

No LIV executives were made available for interviews for this story, but LIV Golf did provide the names and titles of its various hires, including chief marketing officer Adam Harter, who was most recently PepsiCo’s senior vice president of media, sports & entertainment.

LIV also hired a chief financial officer, David Phillips, who came from Equinox Group; EVP, head of events, Ross Hallett, who most recently worked as head of golf events EMA for IMG; EVP, head of team business operations Katie O’Reilly, previously the chief revenue officer for the Philadelphia 76ers NBA team; LIV also hired a head of human resources and a new executive vice president to run its London office.

The league also announced that it is moving into new, bigger office space in both New York and London while expanding its operation in West Palm Beach, Fla. In total, according to a LIV Golf spokesman, the league employs about 200 people full-time around the world, not including numerous contractors. That’s growth of some 50% since the start of 2023.

Golf's Super Bowl?

DeChambeau said earlier this year he believed a deal between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and PIF was imminent, but the SSG investment in PGA Tour Enterprises clearly pushed that back.

The 2020 U.S. Open champion who finished second two weeks ago at the PGA Championship is still bullish on some sort of agreement. Like McIlroy, he suggested something outside of the current setup as one possibility. McIlroy has proposed a “Champions League” system that would promote the best players into a separate competition of events.

Something along those lines is where PIF investment—setting up a lucrative series of six to eight worldwide events outside of the PGA Tour and LIV—makes sense, and could be a potential big revenue source for PGA Tour Enterprises.

“How great would it be to have these signature events have a team aspect on it?” DeChambeau said. “It increases the value of those tournaments. You create a 50-50 partnership on the split of the team stuff and call it a day. We have certain events outside of the PGA Tour, we have events that are on the PGA Tour. We come together at the end of the season like the NFC-AFC. It’s not a hard fix.”

DeChambeau’s NFL/Super Bowl idea is one of many that have been tossed around outside of those who are ultimately making the decisions. And that is where there has been a void.

Nobody knows for sure how this will look and there are myriad issues to work through, not the least of which could LIV players come back to the PGA Tour in any way—if they even want to do so.

The Framework's promises and its reality

It is interesting to remember what the original six-page agreement had outlined. Among the things it stipulated was that Al-Rumayyan would be the chairman of the board of the new company, then called NewCo and now PGA Tour Enterprises. He would also be given a spot on the PGA Tour Policy Board, which runs the non-profit PGA Tour Inc.

The agreement stated that the league that launched in June 2022 would see its future determined by the PGA Tour Enterprises board of directors and that the PGA Tour would hold a majority.

There was considerable pushback about that, especially when it was viewed that if the PIF would be putting in the majority of the money, why wouldn’t Al-Rumayyan have a bigger say? Well, for now, he’s not part of it at all, and if he is, what will happen?

Monahan, who has added responsibilities with the PGA Tour Enterprises, was as part of the agreement to be its CEO. Dunne and Ed Herlihy, members of the PGA Tour policy board, were also to be members of the new board—but neither were added.

The agreement also said that an “empirical data-driven evaluation” would be conducted of LIV Golf to determine its future, and the board, overseen by Monahan, “will determine the ongoing plan and strategy.”

Elsewhere, the agreement stated that the board “will make a good faith assessment of the benefits of team golf.” Whether any of that ever occurred or is ongoing is unclear.

But one thing is not: LIV Golf continues to operate as if it will be a stand-alone league, with its team concept and 54-hole shotgun events and various sponsorship deals.

Several player contracts will expire at the end of this year, and in order to create interest, LIV will need to bring on new players. Does it continue to offer lucrative deals to existing PGA Tour players? And what does that mean about any agreement?

A year later, so much remains unknown. But from LIV’s standpoint, it appears the attitude is thus: business as usual.

PGA Tour golfers frustrated they didn't know about deal with LIV Golf beforehand

pga tour live commentators today

Editor's note: For the latest on the LIV Golf and PGA Tour merger,  follow USA TODAY Sports' live updates here.

The golf world was stunned by the PGA Tour-LIV Golf deal , and apparently, so were the ones on the tours.

The announcement Tuesday morning was a shocker since the PGA Tour and some of its players have been critical of the LIV Golf Invitational Series, primarily because it is funded entirely by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the sovereign wealth investment fund of the Saudi government, which has been accused of wide-ranging human rights abuses, including politically motivated killings, torture, forced disappearances and inhumane treatment of prisoners.

When the announcement was made, PGA Tour golfers voiced their displeasure on Twitter with how they found out about the deal, with many saying that they found out through social media.

OPINION: PGA Tour sold out to LIV Golf and the Saudis. Pro golf will never be the same.

PGA Tour golfers not notified of PGA-LIV deal

Here are what golfers have said about finding out when the deal was made:

  • Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa gave a sarcastic reaction on Twitter , saying, "I love finding out morning news on Twitter."
  • Canadian golfer Mackenzie Hughes said he also found out about the news on Twitter, adding how the PGA Tour is merging with a tour "we said we’d never do that with."
  • Michael Kim wondered how many people knew the deal was going to take place, while also mentioning that PGA Tour has called itself a "player run organization"
  • Wesley Bryan also said he found out about the news on Twitter. He added he feels "betrayed" and those involved in the deal should feel ashamed.

Greg Norman unaware of deal

PGA Tour golfers weren't the only people left in the dark about the deal.

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, who has been the public face of the league, was unaware about the deal until moments before it was announced, according to PIF Gov. Yasir Al-Rumayyan.

"He is aware. I made a call just before this. Of course, he's a partner with us. All the stakeholders with us had a call right before this interview," Al-Rumayyan said on his appearance on CNBC announcing the deal.

Norman has yet to publicly comment on the merger.

The PGA Tour is scheduled to meet with its players at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

Change Text Size

Grayson Murray, who won his second PGA TOUR title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, passed away Saturday.

"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Commissioner Monahan continued. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Grief counselors were made available at the venues for this week’s PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events. Commissioner Monahan, who traveled from TOUR headquarters in Florida to the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, said he was "devastated" by the loss.

Grayson's parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in a statement Sunday that the cause of death was suicide .

"Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents wrote. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed."

Murray, 30, was a standout golfer from his youth. He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships (2006-08) and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group. He made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at age 16, becoming the second-youngest player ever to do so. After stints at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University, he got the break he needed in 2016 when he was given a sponsor exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour event near his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. He finished inside the top 10 at that event, the Rex Hospital Open, which qualified him for another start. When he posted another top 10 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, his professional career took off. He concluded his season with a victory at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to finish second on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and earn full status on the PGA TOUR for the 2016-17 season. The win came a week before his 23rd birthday.

Murray wasted little time establishing himself on golf’s biggest stage as a rookie. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship while still just 23 years old. His final-round 68 not only secured a one-shot victory, but also solidified a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA TOUR season. He finished 66th in the FedExCup and earned nearly $1.5 million.

Grayson struggled for the next few seasons on the PGA TOUR. In 2023, he found his game again on the Korn Ferry Tour; he notched two victories – the Advent Health Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville – to finish fourth on that tour’s points list and earn a spot back onto the PGA TOUR for the following season.

Murray opened the 2024 season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He made a clutch up and down on the 72nd hole for a birdie to force a playoff. Then he sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley. He reached a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking after that victory.
