Oakmont Country Club To Host Numerous Future USGA Events Including U.S. Open

August 11, 2021 / 11:48 AM EDT / CBS Pittsburgh

By: KDKA-TV News Staff

OAKMONT, Pa. (KDKA) --  The USGA has announced a long-term relationship with Oakmont Country Club that will bring several championship golf events to Western Pennsylvania over the next two decades.

The news was announced Wednesday morning at the U.S. Amateur Championship, which is being co-hosted this week by Oakmont Country Club and the Longue Vue Club.

Oakmont Country Club had previously been designated as the site for the 2025 U.S. Open, but the tournament will also be returning to the historic venue in 2034, 2042, and 2049.

The U.S. Women's Open will be played there in 2028 and 2038.

The venue will also host the 2033 Walker Cup Match and the 2046 U.S. Women's Amateur.

This new relationship between Oakmont Country Club and the USGA will make Oakmont the second U.S. Open anchor site, meaning championship golf will return to the venue every five to six years.

Prior to this week's U.S. Amateur Championship, the venue hosted the U.S. Open in 2016 and 2007, and the U.S. Amateur in 2003.

BENTON HARBOR, Michigan (May 22, 2024) – The 84th KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship returns for a historic sixth time to Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan, where the Corebridge Financial Team of PGA of America Golf Professionals will compete against the world’s best senior golfers. The Corebridge Financial Team at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship includes the top finishers in the 2023 Senior PGA Professional Championship held last October at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. “Our incredible PGA of America Golf Professionals who comprise the Corebridge Financial Team have combined for 130 starts in the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship,” said PGA of America President John Lindert, PGA Director of Golf at the Country Club of Lansing (Michigan). “Their resilience on the course is matched by their passion for their tenured careers on the lesson tee, in the golf shop and in their respective communities. They love to compete and they love to help others enjoy the game. We wish them the best of luck at Harbor Shores.” Corebridge Financial’s partnership with the PGA of America includes the title sponsorship of three PGA of America Member teams, formerly known as the Team of 20 (PGA Championship); Team of 35 (KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship); and Team of 9 (KPMG Women’s PGA Championship). Each group is now recognized as the Corebridge Financial Team. Bob Sowards, PGA, the Director of Instruction at Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club in Powell, Ohio, will lead the team as champion of the 2023 Senior PGA Professional Championship. One of the Association’s most accomplished competitors, he won the PGA of America Senior PGA Professional Player of the Year award five times, including in 2023, as well as four PGA of America Professional Player of the Year honors. He has been a member of 15 Corebridge Financial Teams competing in both PGA Championships and KitchenAid Senior PGA Championships. Sowards finished T-5 in the 2021 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club, and even held the lead in the second round. He made the cut at the 2023 Championship at PGA Frisco and also competed in 2022 and 2019. Among other notables beginning play Thursday: David Hutsell, PGA, Lead Instructor at Baltimore Country Club, played in the 2010 and ’11 PGA Championships. He’s competed in 10 PGA Tour events and has won three PGA Professional Championships (2010, ‘11, ‘15). In 2020, Hutsell was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and has gone through several rounds of cancer treatments. He is currently in remission. Tracy Phillips, PGA, Director of Instruction at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, comes into the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship after making his PGA Championship debut last week at age 61. A Member of the PGA of America since 1992, Phillips stopped playing competitive golf for 20 years (1988-2008) following a collegiate golf career at Oklahoma State University. He finished T-8 in the PGA Professional Championship to earn a spot on the Corebridge Financial Team, and made the cut in the 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at PGA Frisco. Tim Weinhart, PGA, the Director of Instruction at Heritage Golf Links in Tucker, GA, finished T-9 in the 2023 Senior PGA Professional Championship to earn his spot on the Corebridge Financial Team. He previously played in six major championships: five PGA Championships (2002, ’05, ’06, ’08, ’09) and the 2012 U.S. Open. He made the cut at both the 2022 and 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championships, including finishing as low PGA of America Golf Professional in 2023 at PGA Frisco. • Braden Shattuck, PGA, Breaks Bellewood Country Club Course Record to Win 2024 Delaware Valley Open

Pottstown, Pa. (May 20, 2024) — PGA of America Golf Professional Braden Shattuck of Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa., broke Bellewood Country Club’s course record to win the  2024 Philadelphia PGA Delaware Valley Open  with an 8-under-par 63. Coming off an impressive finish at the PGA Championship in Kentucky, where he earned  Low Club Professional honors , Shattuck bettered Louis Kelly of Gulph Mills Golf Club by two strokes. The tournament is a Philadelphia PGA  Rolex / Haverford Trust Company Philadelphia PGA Player of the Year  points event, and the second Silvercrest Cup qualifier of the year.

Shattuck made eight birdies and zero bogeys en route to surpass Bellewood’s course record by two strokes, which was made even more impressive by the fact that he drove 10 hours from Louisville, Ky., following the PGA Championship’s trophy ceremony, in order to make his 2:30 p.m. tee time today. To watch Shattuck accept the Low Club Professional trophy,  click here .

“I didn’t get into too much trouble today,” Shattuck said of his round. “I had a lot of short clubs in my hand, which made it a little easier, having a 130-yard approach compared to 230 yards at Valhalla.”

Returning for the third season, the Silvercrest Cup series will include four qualifying events for Philadelphia PGA Professionals, and will culminate in a $30,000 Silvercrest Cup final on September 16, hosted at Union League Liberty Hill in Lafayette Hill, Pa. For more information on the season-long race to the Silvercrest Cup,  click here . In addition to receiving the winner’s share of the purse, Shattuck also took home an additional $2,500 from the Silvercrest Cup qualifier bonus pool.

“It’s amazing,” when asked about his Silvercrest Cup bonus. “We’re fortunate that they take care of us through the Silvercrest Cup final and qualifier bonuses. I am personally very thankful for Silvercrest and Allen Gray for what they do for us. I couldn’t be happier.”

Shattuck went on to thank the Rolling Green members and Rolling Green PGA Director of Golf Scott Chisholm for being so supportive, the Philadelphia PGA Section staff, his fiancée, family, and friends, for being there when he needs them.

“Being on the road for a long time can be hard, and I’m lucky to have everyone around supporting me,” said Shattuck.

The University of Delaware’s Brendon Post and Sandy Run C.C.’s Trevor Bensel tied for third place at 4-under-par. Seven PGA Golf Professionals tied for fifth place at 1-under-par.

Brendon Post, PGA, topped the Senior Division leaderboard at 4-under-par, bettering fellow PGA Professionals Terry Hertzog, Bent Creek C.C., and Terry Hatch, Royal Oaks G.C., by three strokes. Pete Lovenguth, Sandy Run C.C., and Bill Walker tied for fourth place at 1-over-par.

The Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Bill Sautter, PGA, took the top prize in the Super Senior Division, finishing at 2-under-par, five strokes ahead of a trio of PGA Professionals: PGA Life Members Wayne Phillips and Michael Versuk, and Greg Farrow, Deerwood C.C. PGA Life Member J.R. Delich, 82, finished in fifth place and turned in a round of 78, making it the 400th time he has shot or bettered his age on the golf course. Well played, J.R.!

The  Philadelphia Assistants’ Organization  (PAO) held an event concurrently with the Delaware Valley Open, with Louis Kelly emerging victorious. Trevor Bensel finished in second place two behind Kelly. Jeff Fick, Moselem Springs G.C., and Robert Fenton, Sunnybrook G.C., tied for third place at 1-under-par. Fifth place was rounded out by Matt Finger, DuPont C.C., Zach Barbin, Chesapeake Bay G.C., and Alex Knoll, Glen Brook G.C., all of whom shot even-par 71s.

  • Philadelphia PGA of America Golf Professional Braden Shattuck Earns Low Club Professional Honors at 2024 PGA Championship

Shattuck, Wells head home with a trove of highlights and memories

By Jeff Babineau, PGA Pool Reporter

PGA of America Golf Professional Braden Shattuck expects the usual barrage of questions when he gets back on the practice tee at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania, where he is PGA Director of Instruction.

With Shattuck, 29, having just played in his second PGA Championship, his students will want to know what his nerves were like; who he played with; and what he did to keep himself calm. This time, he will have a new question to answer:  What was it like to play on the weekend at a major?

He and Jeremy Wells, a 33-year-old Director of Instruction at Cypress Lake Golf Club in Fort Myers, Florida, were the two PGA Golf Professionals from the 21-man Corebridge Financial Team who made the 36-hole cut at the 106th PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. Wells and Shattuck each were competing in their second PGA Championship, having made it to Oak Hill a year ago, and this time they saw the championship all the way through.

Both experienced highs and lows at Valhalla, but were departing Kentucky far richer for their experience. Who might benefit the most? Those lucky golfers that they teach back home.

Shattuck, winner of the 2023 PGA Professional Championship, shot a closing 3-over 74 on Sunday, managing to close out his week with three hard-earned pars to finish 72 holes in red numbers. At 1-under 283, he earned honors as the Low PGA of America Golf Professional.

“This week has been obviously awesome,” said Shattuck, whose golf career was put on hold five years ago when he was involved in a terrible car accident that herniated two disks and took him out of golf for two years. “This is the first cut I’ve made [in a big pro event], and I just happened to do it at a major.”

Wells finished on a tough note, making a triple-bogey 8 at the par-5 18th early Sunday, but it did little to dampen his memorable week-long experience. Competing elbow to elbow with the best players in the world is something he had dreamed about since starting the game at 5 years old back in Virginia. He tried the pro game for a bit, but discovered what others who try it find out: Golf is really, really hard.

Making the cut at Valhalla was something that two-time major champion Jon Rahm did not do, that U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick did not do, that six-time major champion Phil Mickelson did not do. That is, perform well enough to make it to the third round of the championship.

“What did it look like?” asked Wells Sunday afternoon, when asked to recount those starry aspirations of his youth. “It looks like this. Beautiful days playing great golf courses in front of hundreds, thousands of people. Lots of fun.”

Wells has three children 7 and under, and two of them were in Kentucky to watch their dad play. He had quite a week, sharing it with his former roommate and teammate from the College of William & Mary, Spencer Kushner, who caddied for him. His parents were at Valhalla, too. One highlight came on Wednesday, when Wells was looking to play nine holes and then get some rest. As he stood waiting to hit on the 10th tee, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Scheffler’s Ryder Cup teammate, Max Homa, stepped up to join him.

Wells’ dad, Leigh Wells, said that did wonders to relax his son for Thursday’s first round, when he shot 69.

Wells said he drew inspiration, as many PGA of America Golf Professionals have, from the T-15 performance of PGA Professional Michael Block last May at Oak Hill. One thing he will take with him home to Florida is the desire to play more golf with his students, and not just watch them hit balls on a practice tee.

He also hoped that a great week in Kentucky leaves a lasting impression on his son, Mason, and daughter, Chloe, who were troopers all week, joining their mom, Melissa, in watching their father play his rounds.

“I hope they learn, my kids especially, just the amount of hard work that goes into this,” Wells said. “Got to hang in there, whatever it is in life. If you continue to stay focused and refine it through time, you can always get better. And we’re going to do that again for next year, or for the next opportunity.”

Shattuck wore a ribbon to honor his friend Dustin Wallis, member of the Philadelphia PGA Section whose life ended unexpectedly, and much too soon, at age 45 last month. Asked if Wallis would have approved of his showing at Valhalla, Shattuck said, “I think so… I think so. Hopefully he’s proud.”

For both Shattuck and Wells there will be plenty of time down the road to savor their great week, but on Monday, there was golf to play. Wells was trying to get back for a South Florida PGA Section event on Monday; Shattuck faced driving 10 hours home to Pennsylvania, hoping to make a time for a Section event at Bellwood, which is a Silver Crest Cup qualifier.

As the 2023 PPC champion, Shattuck still has three PGA Tour exemptions upcoming in 2024. He hopes to play Rocket Mortgage, John Deere and Barracuda. In challenging times, he can just harken back to his play at Valhalla.

PGA of America Member Dave McNabb of Applebrook Golf Club in Malvern, Pa., will be making a major championship appearance at the 2024 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich., on May 23-26.

McNabb has played several major championships, including in last year’s year’s KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, where he made the first-ever competitive hole-in-one at PGA Frisco in Texas.

  • Philadelphia PGA of America Golf Professional Braden Shattuck Plays Weekend at 106th PGA Championship

Louisville, Kentucky (May 18, 2024) – PGA of America Golf Professionals Braden Shattuck (Philadelphia PGA Section) and Jeremy Wells (South Florida PGA Section) made the cut at the 106th PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. It’s the first time since 2021 that more than one PGA of America Golf Professional will play the weekend at the PGA Championship.

Shattuck, the PGA Director of Instruction at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania, made the cut after missing last year in his first  appearance in the PGA Championship.

Beginning the second round on the 10th hole, Shattuck got off to a quick start with birdies on holes 11-13. He made the turn at 2-under, however bogies on holes 3 and 4 nudged him outside the cutline. He needed at least one birdie over the final two holes to get within the top-70 and ties to reach the weekend. The birdie came on the par-3 8th hole (his 17th of the round) courtesy of draining a 35-footer.

On the par-4 9th, he found the fairway bunker off the tee and a greenside bunker with this approach. He stared down a 4-footer then holed it for par.

“The cup looked like the size of a thimble on that last 4-footer,” Shattuck said, smiling, “but, thankfully, it found its way to the middle.”

Shattuck had to rebuild his swing due to a car accident in 2019, herniating two disks in his back and unable to swing a golf club for two years. He won the 2023 PGA Professional Championship to play at Oak Hill, where missing the cut last year left him wanting more.

This will be his first time playing the weekend of a Major Championship as part of the Corebridge Financial Team.

“That’s something you take a lot of pride in,” he said. “It’s nice to represent the PGA of America out here.”

Shattuck began his third round at 1:34 p.m. ET off the 10th tee paired with S.H. Kim and Stephan Jaeger.

Wells (2-under), the PGA Director of Player Development at Cypress Lake Golf Club in Fort Myers, Florida, finished his second round Saturday morning after play was suspended due to darkness on Friday.

A good night’s rest isn’t always easy to come by for a father of three. Trying to sleep with two holes still to play to make his first cut at the PGA Championship may be even harder.

“We woke our kids up at 4:30 to get to the golf course,” Wells said. “We were in blankets in the clubhouse. Yeah, didn’t sleep very well but it wasn’t the first time I felt that way.

“Fortunately, I got to play 8 and 9 this morning, which are kind of normal holes here. But even still, I knew I was going to have to stand over a couple 3-footers.”

With a two-putt par on the par-3 8th hole, Wells had a shot to spare to make the 1-under cut on his 36th hole, alleviating some stress for the 2-footer that finished his even-par round.

Wells made the Corebridge Financial Team in 2023 at Oak Hill, but missed the cut. Making the weekend this year was the ultimate goal.

“We have a Section Championship which leads to the National Championship (PGA Professional Championship) which leads to the PGA Championship, and then you have a cut at the PGA Championship,” Wells said. “Now that I’ve made this cut, hopefully some of the pressure is off because these next two days are kind of the goal for my year. I’m fortunate enough to get this far to the PGA Championship.”

Wells will begin his third round at 1:01 p.m. ET off the 10th tee paired with 2010 PGA Champion Martin Kaymer (2-under) and Tyrell Hatton (2-under).

The last time more than one PGA of America Golf Professional made the cut at the PGA Championship was 2021 at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, when Ben Cook (Michigan Section) and Brad Marek (Northern California Section) played the weekend.

Corebridge Financial broadened its partnership with the PGA of America to include title sponsorship of the PGA of America Member teams, formerly known as the Team of 20 (PGA Championship); Team of 35 (KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship); and Team of 9 (KPMG Women’s PGA Championship). Each group will now be recognized as the Corebridge Financial Team.

The PGA Championship continues May 18-19 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. You can stream, watch or listen on the networks of CBS, CBS Sports Network, Paramount, ESPN, ESPN+ and SiriusXM Radio.

Sandy Run’s team also finished atop the Gross Division leaderboard at 8-under-par, thanks in part to Lovenguth’s seven birdies. They were followed by the Wild Quail team at 7-under-par. Lehigh C.C. own’s Josh Tremblay, Laura Manchester, Patty Cox, and Michelle Cox, finished at 6-under-par, and tied Hanover C.C.’s Parks Price, Audrie Sasse, Steph Naymick, and Kelly Riggle. Debski’s Springhaven team finished in fifth place with at 5-under-par.

Dave Pagett Wins 2024 Philadelphia PGA Connelly Cup Head Golf  Professional Championship

Glenside, Pa. (May 7, 2024) — PGA of America Golf Professional Dave Pagett of Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa., defeated Danny Lewis of Philadelphia Cricket Club at Saint Martins, in a sudden death playoff at North Hills Country Club to win the  2024 Philadelphia PGA Connelly Cup Head Golf Professional Championship . Both shot a three-under-par round of 68 to earn their spots in the playoff.

The Connelly Cup is named in honor of Jack Connelly, a past president of both the PGA of America (2001-02) and Philadelphia PGA Section (1983-84). Connelly was also inducted into the Section’s Hall of Fame in 2000, and PGA of America Hall of Fame in 2005.

The playoff began on No. 18, a 350-yard par-4 that features a treacherously steep green; both players made par, and headed back to the tee. Padgett made an eight-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to claim victory.”

“I played really solid today, especially with an eagle on No. 15, and several other birdies along the way,” said Pagett. “My goal was to remain patient and positive throughout the day and it paid off.”

Jeff Kiddie, Aronimink G.C., finished in third place at 1-over par. Greg Wingate, Sunnybrook G.C., shot a 2-over-par 73 for fourth place. Four PGA Professionals tied for fifth place.

Kiddie also secured first place in the Senior Division, bettering Eric Kennedy, Overbrook G.C., by two strokes. In a tie for third with a 4-over score of 75 were John Pillar, C.C. of Woodloch Springs and John Cooper, Green Valley C.C. Brian Kelly earned solo fifth in the Senior Division with his score of 76.

This pennsylvania golf course designed by a. w. tillinghast is on sale for $1.1 million, share this article.

Anyone interested in buying one of the most historic and challenging golf courses in Northwest Pennsylvania? If so, an Erie area golf gourse is up for sale.

Millcreek Township — which has owned the 160-acre, 18-hole Erie Golf Club since 2009 — is accepting sealed bids through a Conshohocken-based golf broker, Golf Property Analysts. In December, Erie County Judge Marshall Piccinini approved the township’s petition to sell the course.

Township officials started sending bid packages Wednesday to interested parties.

“We have received numerous inquiries here at the township and I know Golf Property Analysts have received them as well,” said Jim Bock, a township supervisor. “We gave a tour of the course last week to one gentleman from out of town and he said he is definitely interested in placing a bid.”

The township’s asking price is $1.1 million, which is based on a recent appraisal done by Golf Property Analysts. Bids do not have to match or exceed the asking price, but Bock said township officials will have to discuss what happens if all of the bids are significantly lower.

The city of Erie owned the course for decades before selling it Erie Golf Course, 6050 Old Zuck Road, was established in 1921 and designed by celebrated golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast. It was owned for decades by the city of Erie before the township purchased it.

A private business, 7637 Enterprises, currently operates the course under a five-year contract that expires at the end of the 2024 golf season. The township receives $37,000 annually as part of the deal, but expects to run a deficit of about $160,000 over the five years due to repair costs and other capital expenses.

Those interested in bidding on Erie Golf Course are encouraged to contact Larry Hirsh at [email protected]. Bids will be accepted until early or mid-July, Bock said.

Deed restrictions on three of the four properties that comprise Erie Golf Course require the land be used as a golf course. Proceeds from the sale must be allocated to the township’s parks and recreation department, Bock said.

“We’re discussing using the proceeds to expand the Millcreek Golf & Learning Center, 3100 W. 17th St., from six holes to nine,” Bock said.

What Defines a P.G.A. Championship Golf Course? Excitement.

Unlike the other majors, the tournament has been moving around looking for compelling play for more than 100 years.

pga tour events pennsylvania

By Paul Sullivan

The last time the P.G.A. Championship was held at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina, Rory McIlroy entered the final round with a three-shot lead over the field, but the former P.G.A. champions Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington and Tiger Woods were giving chase.

That week in August 2012 had been full of drama. Winds during Friday’s second round gusted to 30 miles per hour. A thunderstorm on Saturday had left about a third of the players having to finish their rounds on Sunday morning, including McIlroy.

When the final round got underway, McIlroy shot a bogey-free round of six under par. Some players made a charge on Sunday that cut into his lead, but he won the tournament walking away.

With an eight-shot buffer, McIlroy beat a stacked field that succumbed to the course. He also set a record for margin of victory, besting the one set by Jack Nicklaus when he won his fifth P.G.A. Championship in 1980.

That is exactly the kind of excitement the P.G.A. of America seeks when it selects a course for its major championship. It wants a bunch of players to have a chance to win, but it’s also happy if one player puts on a master class and pulls away from everyone else.

“Our philosophy is we want someone to win it, not lose it,” said Seth Waugh , chief executive of the P.G.A. of America, which holds the P.G.A. Championship and the Ryder Cup. “We want birdies and eagles and bogeys and others. We’re not trying to create a torture test. That’s not what we try to do.”

Looking back on the scores of courses that have hosted P.G.A. Championships, this tournament is more enigmatic than the other three majors when it comes to a defining template for its courses.

The Masters is at Augusta National Golf Club every spring (not the fall, as it was in 2020), with all eyes on the back nine on Sunday. There players fall in and out of contention with dizzying speed as they did this year, when it looked as if the eventual winner, Hideki Matsuyama , was faltering as Xander Schauffele was surging, only to have everything flip again.

The British Open is played at a fairly set rotation of courses, but the winning score is as dependent on the weather — particularly the wind — as it is on the course itself. Winning scores at the Old Course at St. Andrews, for example, have ranged widely. Woods won there in 2000 at 19 under par. Five years earlier, John Daly won at six under. The most recent Open at St. Andrews was won by Zach Johnson at 15 under par.

And then there’s the golf course that hosts the United States Open. How the United States Golf Association, which administers the U.S. Open, sets up the course is often the subject of debate. Complaints are legendary: The greens at Shinnecock Hills in 2004 and 2018 were so fast and the pins were placed in such difficult locations that some of the best players in the world called the course unplayable. They included Phil Mickelson, who in 2018 hit a putt while it was still rolling to keep it on the green. (He incurred a two-shot penalty.)

So what makes a course worthy of the P.G.A. Championship? It’s easy to say what the courses are not — overly tight, unforgiving or predictable — but it’s harder to say what they share in common.

A look at the courses that have hosted the championship doesn’t, on its face, paint the same picture of consistency as the other major championships.

A relatively short Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y., hosted the first P.G.A. Championship in 1916. Oakmont Country Club, considered by the sport to be the toughest course in America and synonymous with the U.S. Open, hosted a P.G.A. Championship in 1922, five years before its first of nine U.S. Opens. Classic courses like Baltusrol in Springfield, N.J.; Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, N.Y.; and Oakland Hills in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., have hosted P.G.A. Championships and U.S. Opens.

Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., and Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa., have hosted regular PGA Tour events as well as the P.G.A. Championships. And some now obscure courses have also held the tournament, including Seaview Golf Club in Galloway, N.J., and Hershey Country Club in Pennsylvania.

“The list of P.G.A. Championship courses is kind of uneven, but in a cool and fun way,” said Tom Coyne, who played golf in all 50 states, including at every U.S. Open venue, for his new book “A Course Called America: Fifty States, Five Thousand Fairways, and the Search for the Great American Golf Course.”

“There are those mainstays that go back and forth between the U.S. Open and the P.G.A. like Baltusrol, Oakland Hills and Southern Hills,” he said. “Then there are those you wouldn’t even know hosted a P.G.A. Championship, like Llanerch Country Club. I had no idea it hosted the 1958 championship, and I grew up playing at a club 10 miles down the road.”

Coyne said one distinguishing factor in course selection might be the history of the organizations themselves. Both the U.S.G.A. and the R&A, which puts on the British Open, are the official arbitrators of the rules of golf. Rodman Wanamaker, whose wealth came from owning department stores, was one of the founders of the P.G.A. of America, which began in 1916 as a trade organization for professional golfers.

“The P.G.A. is less bound by the history of golf. You’re going to have people saying this isn’t a U.S. Open course,” Coyne said about clubs chosen to host the event, “but they’re not going to say this isn’t a P.G.A. course.”

One thing that stands out is the P.G.A. of America’s having embraced Pete and Alice Dye, among the 20th century’s most important golf architects , whose courses illicit strong emotions. While some players enjoy them as a stern test of golf, others find that the courses seem to punish even good shots.

Whistling Straits, a Dye-designed course in Kohler, Wis., got its first P.G.A. Championship in 2004. M.G. Orender was the president of the P.G.A. of America at the time. He said the selection might have seemed like a departure for the organization, but it was really a recognition of the historical standing of the Dyes.

“Dye built courses that have stood the test of time,” Orender said of Whistling Straits and Kiawah. “He’s no different than Donald Ross, Seth Raynor or A.W. Tillinghast.” Those last three are considered among the best golden age architects, with courses that regularly host championships.

The first P.G.A. Championship at a Dye course was Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., in 1991 — won by John Daly.

If there’s one other thing that drives the location of a P.G.A. Championship, it’s the desire to share the courses among the P.G.A. of America’s 41 governing areas, which represent club and teaching pros.

“When we pick golf courses, because we’re the P.G.A. of America, we represent golf at every level,” Waugh said. “Each of our sections also takes enormous pride in hosting a championship.”

Several of the P.G.A. Championship courses have been at clubs that hold regular tour events, but the PGA Tour — a different entity from the P.G.A. of America — sets them up. For the P.G.A. Championship, the course can be set up however Kerry Haigh, chief championships officer at the P.G.A., wants it to be.

“The reason we’re going to these venues is they’re already great golf courses,” he said before the 2019 championship at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y.

His job in setting up the championship is to make “minor tweaks and suggestions,” Haigh said. “We try to bring out the great features of any golf course.”

Still, Waugh stressed that the connective tissues among the courses is an exciting finish. “I can’t tell you if the winning score is going to be five under or five over or 20 under,” he said about this year’s tournament. “But the course will be fair, and it will be fun, and we hope there’s a playoff at the end.”

PGA Tour stops in each state you can play

pga tour events pennsylvania

Unlike other professional sports where the fields of play are reserved for competitors only, many of professional golf’s annual stops are open to the public. There is a certain intrigue to playing the same courses that the best players in the world tackle—trying to replicate the shots that produced dramatic triumphs on the biggest stage.

During its 2021-22 season, the PGA Tour will travel to private and public tracks across 22 different states. This collection includes the 21 courses across nine states that will host a PGA Tour event this season and are open for public play.

TPC Scottsdale (Stadium)

tpc-scottsdale-stadium-fourteenth-hole-12552

Even after the WMPO is complete, the facility leaves up the giant grandstands surrounding the par-3 16th, so public golfers can get a taste of the experience—minus the 20,000 rowdy fans. The Stadium course features challenging greens and culminates with a memorable finishing stretch.

California:

Silverado resort and spa (north).

Situated in the heart of the Wine Country, the North course at Silverado Resort and Spa annually hosts the PGA Tour’s Fortinet Championship, which kicked off the tour’s 2021-22 schedule. Stay at the resort for the opportunity to play this Johnny Miller-redesigned track that features narrow, oak-lined fairways.

PGA West (Stadium)

Annually hosting a PGA Tour event in January, the Stadium course is known for its risk-reward challenges, plus the massive 18-foot high bunker on the par-5 16th hole as well as the island-green par-3 17th hole.

PGA West (Nicklaus Tournament)

pga-west-nicklaus-tournament-course-fifteenth-hole-13807

The Nicklaus Tournament course at PGA West is part of the annual rotation of courses for the PGA Tour event. The Nicklaus-designed layout is forgiving off the tee, demands precise approach shots and features two island greens.

Torrey Pines (South)

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/6/torrey pines south.jpg

Ranked No. 42 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, the South course is home to eight of Tiger Woods’ career wins on the PGA Tour, including the 2008 U.S. Open, his 14th major victory. Perhaps best known for the dramatic finishes in its two U.S. Opens (2008 and 2021), the South course annually hosts the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Torrey Pines (North)

The North course at Torrey Pines is used (along with the South) during the first two rounds of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open. Renovated in 2016 by Tom Weiskopf, the North is more playable than the South but offers equally (if not superior) scenic ocean views.

Pebble Beach Golf Links

Perhaps the greatest meeting of land and sea, Pebble Beach has been No. 1 on Golf Digest’s ranking of America’s best public courses since the inception of our public list in 2000. In addition to the annual PGA Tour stop, Pebble Beach is slated to host numerous USGA championships in the coming decades, including the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open and 2027 U.S. Open.

Spyglass Hill

4th Hole, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Pebble Beach, CA

Evan Schiller

Inside the top 10 of our public ranking, Spyglass Hill is one of three courses in the rotation for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Weaving through the majestic Monterey pines through the middle of the round, and the giant sand dunes on the first five holes, Spyglass Hill—ranked No. 51 on our latest ranking of America’s 100 Greatest—might be Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s best work.

Tahoe Mountain Club (Old Greenwood)

Since 2020, the Old Greenwood course at Tahoe Mountain Club has hosted the Barracuda Championship on the PGA Tour. This Jack Nicklaus design plays among 600 acres of towering pines in the High Sierras.

PGA National (Champion)

pga-national-champion-third-hole-2106

PGA National Resort

Routinely one of the toughest courses on tour, The Champion course at PGA National is home to The Bear Trap—the demanding three-hole stretch (Nos. 15-17) that requires precise iron play. With wind often playing a factor and water lurking on many holes, The Champion is a true ball-striking test.

Bay Hill Club and Lodge

There’s no shortage of history at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge—with its ties to Mr. Palmer and Woods’ eight wins at the annual PGA Tour stop. Stay at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge and you can play the Champion and Challenger nines, where the Arnold Palmer Invitational is played. It offers a stern test with deep rough and imposing lakes lurking.

TPC Sawgrass (Stadium)

Innisbrook’s Copperhead course, the host of the Valspar Championship, offers a unique taste of Florida golf with its tight, tree-lined fairways and rolling terrain. The course is a tough ball-striking challenge with a demanding three-hole finish—known as the Snake Pit—that often makes for dramatic finishes to the annual PGA Tour stop.

Ranked No. 36 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, the Seaside course at Sea Island Resort hosts a PGA Tour event in the fall. The layout plays along the Atlantic Ocean and features large clamshell bunkers and exposed sand dunes off many fairways.

Sea Island Resort (Plantation)

The Plantation course was recently redesigned by Sea Island resident Davis Love III and his brother, Mark, recapturing the traditional profile of Walter Travis’ 1928 original nine-hole course. The drivable par-4 10th features a green guarded by water and a landing area protected by a principal-nose bunker.

Each year, Kapalua’s Plantation course kicks off the PGA Tour’s calendar-year schedule with its wide, dramatic fairways and stunning views. The Plantation course is ranked No. 23 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and closes with a 663-yard par 5 that is the longest finishing hole on any Golf Digest nationally ranked course.

TPC Deere Run

The site of Jordan Spieth’s first PGA Tour win, TPC Deere Run annually hosts the John Deere Classic. Located in the Quad Cities just over two hours from Chicago, the course was built on the site of a former Arabian horse farm and plays along a rolling landscape.

TPC Louisiana

As home of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans since 2007, this championship golf course has been described as “Sawgrass on steroids.” Designed by Pete Dye and influenced by PGA Tour professionals Steve Elkington and Kelly Gibson, this 7,400 yard par-72 offers a challenging mix of fast greens, hidden bunkers, large cypress trees and water.

Known for the red-and-white-striped lighthouse behind the 18th green and for hosting the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters, Harbour Town demands accuracy with narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens. Ranked No. 25 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, this Pete Dye design plays mostly inland before 17 and 18 emerge with views of Calibogue Sound.

A significant renovation was completed by Tom Doak (in collaboration with Brooks Koepka) to transform the old municipal course at Memorial Park into a layout worthy of being a PGA Tour venue. The revitalized course, now armed with Doak signature green complexes, has hosted the Houston Open since 2020.

TPC San Antonio (Oaks)

Host of the Valero Texas Open, the Oaks course at TPC San Antonio is Golf Digest’s top-ranked public course in the Lone Star State. The Greg Norman design (with an assist from Sergio Garcia) tips out at 7,435 yards and incorporates some rocky terrain and native grasses nicely in the routing.

2024 PGA Championship prize money, purse: Payouts for Xander Schauffele, golfers from $18.5 million pool

This year's purse represents the largest in pga championship history.

wanamaker-trophy-pga-valhalla-2024-g.png

The Wanamaker Trophy and a substantial winner's check were awarded Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club to Xander Schauffele, winner of the 2024 PGA Championship . Raising the purse for the PGA Championship by $1 million from a year ago, the PGA of America is shelling out the largest prize pool in the history of its championship with a total purse of $18.5 million.

A hefty $3.3 million prize will be awarded to Schauffele for going 21 under in Louisville with seven-figure sums being paid out to those golfers who finished on the podium but fell short of the top prize. Every player inside the top 10 by the end of the championship is taking home at least $500,000 with each golfer inside the top 31 cashing a check north of $100,000.

The payouts fall slightly short of those handed out after the 2024 Masters -- and from signature events on the PGA Tour -- both of which held purses of $20 million. Scottie Scheffler won $3.6 million for capturing his second green jacket, though that didn't even represent his largest payday of the season as he claimed $4 million at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and $4.5 million at the Players Championship.

Not only did those who made the weekend come away from their time in Kentucky with a little green to show for it, so will those who missed the cut. All players who carded a 36-hole total will receive $4,000 for their troubles. Considering how many PGA professionals were in the field, that's not bad for two days work.

Let's take a look at a breakdown of the PGA Championship purse.

Rick Gehman, Greg DuCharme, Patrick McDonald and Mark Immelman recap the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Lexi Thompson announced on Tuesday morning that this will be her last year competing on the LPGA Tour, as she plans to retire from professional golf at the conclusion of the 2024 season.

Delray Beach's Lexi Thompson retiring from full-time golf on LPGA Tour at the age of 29

pga tour events pennsylvania

Lexi Thompson , who has been in the spotlight for nearly two decades after qualifying for the 2007 U.S. Women's Open at the age of 12, announced Tuesday she is retiring from full-time competition on the LPGA Tour at the end of this year.

Thompson, who lives in Delray Beach, is 29.

"While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time," she said in an Instagram post. "At the end of 2024, I will be stepping away from a full professional golf schedule. I'm excited to enjoy the remainder of the year as there are still goals I want to accomplish. I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my life. Time with my family, friends, and my trusted companion Leo.

"I will always look for ways to contribute to the sport and inspire the next generation of golfers. And, of course, I look forward to a little time for myself."

Thompson, born in Coral Springs, is an 11-time LPGA Tour winner, including one major, the 2014 Chevron Championship in The Woodlands, Texas; and has won 15 times world wide. She is a two-time Olympian, a six-time U.S. Solheim Cup team member. She also has been one of the most recognizable faces in women's golf for many years.

She is playing in her 18th straight U.S. Women's Open this week at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania.

"Though our relationship has been complicated at times, you taught me resilience, patience and the power of perseverance," she said of the world of golf. "You showed me the highs and lows of competition ... The thrill of victory and lessons learned in defeat."

Thompson was 12 in 2007 when she became the youngest ever to qualify for the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open, held at Pine Needles. She turned pro in 2010 and then one year later, at age 16, she won the Navistar LPGA Classic, becoming the youngest champion on the LPGA Tour.

Both records since have been broken.

Thompson second woman to break 70 in PGA Tour event

In October, Thompson became the seventh woman to compete in a PGA Tour event at the Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas. She was the second woman to break 70 in a PGA Tour event, carding a 2-under 69 in the second round. Her 36-hole total of even par missed the cut by three shots.

More: Grayson Murray, two-time PGA Tour winner who lived in Jupiter, dead at 30 by suicide

Thompson has not won on the LPGA Tour in nearly five years, although she did win a Ladies European Tour event funded by Saudi-based Aramco in the fall of 2022. She has missed the cut in four of her last five events and last year she missed the CME Group Tour Championship for the first time.

With just more than $14 million in prize money, Thompson is 10th on the all-time LPGA money list.

In her Instagram post, Thompson noted the highs and lows of her pro career. She acknowledged her family - including her two brothers who have competed on the Korn Ferry Tour - the LPGA Tour, her sponsors and all the girls who have cheered for her and provided inspiration.

"You haven't always been easy on me or fair for that matter," she said of her career. "But through all the ups and downs, you have given me a platform to inspire others and positively impact the world. That has been a driving force that kept me playing and relentlessly working to be better."

Thompson talks about pressure of the media glare

Thompson also touched on the pressures of starting her golf career at such a young age and being in the media spotlight all these years.

"Although this has been an amazing journey, it hasn't always been an easy one," she said. "Since I was 12 years old, my life as a golfer has been a whirlwind of constant tension, scrutiny and pressure. The cameras are always on, capturing every swing and every moment on and off the golf course. Social media never sleeps with comments and criticisms flooding in from around the world. It can be exhausting to maintain a smile on the outside while grappling with struggles on the inside.

"By opening up about my own battles, I have been able to connect with others who feel isolated in their struggles. Offering them a sense of community and understanding. Each time I share, it reinforces the message that it's OK to not be OK. And seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness."

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

Grayson Murray, who won his second PGA TOUR title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, passed away Saturday.

"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Commissioner Monahan continued. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Grief counselors were made available at the venues for this week’s PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events. Commissioner Monahan, who traveled from TOUR headquarters in Florida to the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, said he was "devastated" by the loss.

Grayson's parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in a statement Sunday that the cause of death was suicide .

"Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents wrote. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed."

Murray, 30, was a standout golfer from his youth. He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships (2006-08) and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group. He made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at age 16, becoming the second-youngest player ever to do so. After stints at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University, he got the break he needed in 2016 when he was given a sponsor exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour event near his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. He finished inside the top 10 at that event, the Rex Hospital Open, which qualified him for another start. When he posted another top 10 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, his professional career took off. He concluded his season with a victory at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to finish second on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and earn full status on the PGA TOUR for the 2016-17 season. The win came a week before his 23rd birthday.

Murray wasted little time establishing himself on golf’s biggest stage as a rookie. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship while still just 23 years old. His final-round 68 not only secured a one-shot victory, but also solidified a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA TOUR season. He finished 66th in the FedExCup and earned nearly $1.5 million.

Grayson struggled for the next few seasons on the PGA TOUR. In 2023, he found his game again on the Korn Ferry Tour; he notched two victories – the Advent Health Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville – to finish fourth on that tour’s points list and earn a spot back onto the PGA TOUR for the following season.

Murray opened the 2024 season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He made a clutch up and down on the 72nd hole for a birdie to force a playoff. Then he sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley. He reached a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking after that victory.
