Hiya, thank you for this blog page. We're going to Kefalonia this july. Whilst my friends and I are all early 20's , we're not too fussed about the nightlife aspect. BUT any recommendation for party boat would be appreciated! I'm struggling to find them. Thank you in advance :)

Hey Anastasia,

How exciting!! I haven't found much for party boats in Kefalonia, but there are a few private boat rental options for your group! They usually come with the skipper and will stop at swim spots around the island. You can bring your own music/drinks and make your own boat party ;) I'd recommend checking out some options like this one: https://getyourguide.tp.st/SbC8sXoZ

Hope this helps xx

Looking to disconnect from the world (and connect with your new travel pals)? Ferries are the place to be. The Wi-Fi and phone signal when sailing between islands (understandably) tends to be weak. That’s why we always recommend using an e-SIM or getting a local SIM so you can have continued connectivity. But there’s no need to worry if you don’t have one. All accommodations throughout the trip will have Wi-Fi available - so you can keep your Insta followers updated on all the fun!

Do all of the hotels have pools?

Almost every time. Most of our accommodations tend to have pool facilities. But hey, you’ve got the sparkling Aegean waters of Greece by your side. So if you wanna take a swim, you’ve got the entire sea to explore.

Can I know what time the ferry will depart & arrive?

Ferry departure & arrival timings tend to change for every trip. So if you’d like to know the exact time, you can contact our 24/7 customer service centre.

In regions like Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and on some North America and New Zealand trips, our group sizes are considerably smaller – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

What’s included?

All essential trip elements have been catered to ensure a great time, with great people in great places. But you mean more specifically right?

Your accommodation, essential trip transport, and a good handful of meals are included in the cost of your Contiki trip (on most trips we offer breakfast every day, plus a hand-picked selection of authentic and tasty meals).

To fill your days and Insta feeds we have Included Experiences, which are basically the sights and activities we think you just can’t afford to miss. Of course you also get our expert and highly trained team of Contiki staff to support throughout.

A day by day breakdown of inclusions and Free Time Add-Ons are available on the trip specific pages.

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

What are Contiki's sustainability credentials?

Travel comes with responsibilities. That’s why we’re determined to travel sustainably and consciously, and that’s why we’re willing to take a stand on issues closest to our hearts. Find out more details here . With the help of our four-point Climate Action Plan, we're now on a journey to Net Zero - committing to carbon reductions and evolving to support the transition to a low-carbon future. Find out more details here .

Do I need to purchase travel insurance for this trip?

Yes! It’s a requirement of traveling with Contiki that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, personal liability & loss of personal property and Covid related expenses before you travel with us. It’s also super important to check that your insurance covers all of the activities you’ll be trying out, particularly any adventure activities (for all you adrenaline junkies). For more information check out our full travel insurance FAQs.

Can I stay in my destination a few days before/after the trip starts/ends? And can Contiki help me arrange this?

Yes and yes! You can add pre- and post-trip accommodation to your booking in one of three ways:

When booking your trip online

In the 'My Travel Portal' after you've made your booking

By calling us any time on 0808 281 1120

Pricing Information

All prices are per person and in  GBP  ( £ ). The  Euro  ( € ) prices are based on the currency of 1.10£ to € and are  fixed.

Please note that the prices tend to increase from those listed below, as prices fluctuate, depending on the availability and the period.

Our main periods are:

  • Peak period  (July, August)
  • Shoulder period  (June, September)
  • Low period  (May, October)

The below-stated prices are subject to change without any notice. Keep in mind, that as the departure date of the sailing tour comes closer, the prices might increase, so it is wise to book in advance and secure the cheapest price possible! Once you have paid your 20% deposit, the remaining price of your option stays as it is!

In case of any price increase/decrease, you will be informed in time, accordingly.

  • Prices fluctuate regularly, in line with the demand. Our Price Promise ensures clients, who book early, that they will never have to pay more, than those who book quite after them

All our standard cabins besides, their comfortable mattresses, are ensuite with their own shower, a hair dryer, a wardrobe for storage, reading lights, their own individual A/C device and an electric fan!

Regarding our cabins, we do have a variety of doubles/twins (lower beds/bunk beds) and a few triples and quads, depending on your cruise package and demand.

The only additional charge you need to expect is the local port fees (80€ per person), which need to be paid upon arrival, in order to assure some basic operational needs for the cruise.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please note that the below itinerary is subject to change due to severe weather conditions or any other unforeseen circumstances. At the unlike event that the itinerary must be altered, we operate our Harmony cruise itinerary instead. See here the Harmony cruise

If you want to have your own private cabin, there will be an extra charge of 75% of the total amount of 1 person’s price.

We always try to allocate same-gender guests, together (this applies to our solo travelers), however, we cannot guarantee this under unexpected situations.

As this is the designated arrival day, you have time to explore the Greek capital before you set sail.

Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities, where you can explore over 3,400 years of history. Buy yourself the multi-site combo tickets for €30 that grants you entry for five days to all the classical sites, including the Acropolis hilltop and the famed Parthenon structure and six other Archaeological sites: Temple of Zeus, Ancient Agora, Hadrian’s Library, Roman Agora, Keramikos Cemetery and Lyceum of Aristotle. The modern Acropolis museum is well worth a visit to learn more and view hundreds of more artefacts.

If you want to see and learn a lot on short time, consider one of the many Athens walking tours on offer – from general city navigation and history, to philosophy, architecture and, of course, food walking tours.

Or stroll the old neighbourhoods from Plake to Psyri, try souvlaki or sip on a frappe, and hang out with the locals in one of the city’s many cafes.

In the afternoon, please make your way to our marina in Salamina marina, where you can meet your fellow sailors and mingle.

Relax on board, sip your drink from your private deck, and dance till dawn!

⚓️Toga Night

We continue our Greek sailing adventure and journey towards to the little traditional village of Ancient Epidaurus, famed for its wild lemon trees & oranges, sandy beaches with blue-green waters, lush greenery and fresh fish.

Sunken City and  Nisi beach are two of the Epidaurus’s best-loved beaches, from which you can explore the Aegean Sea with adrenalin via the massive array of watersports on offer.

There’s time to wander picturesque ancient Epidaurus Town, visit the historical ancient amphitheater, and sample some of the best Greek food – and cocktails – on the island.

⚓️Epidaurus Scuba diving

We continue our Greek sailing adventure and journey towards to the little Greek island of Poros, famed for its wild lemon trees, sandy beaches with blue-green waters, lush greenery and Poseidon’s Temple ruins.

Love Bay and Askeli are two of the island’s best-loved beaches, from which you can explore the Aegean Sea with adrenalin via the massive array of watersports on offer.

There’s time to wander picturesque Poros Town, visit the historical Monastery of Zoodochos Pighi and sample some of the best Greek food – and cocktails – on the island.

⚓️Poros Cooking Class

Hydra is the island of Greek naval traditions and played a significant role in the 1821 War of Independence, with preserved captain’s mansions on the seafront by the quaint Old Harbour, and a thriving town that remains the heart of commercial life on the island.

Horse-drawn carriages can take you on a romantic journey around the old town streets, and the iconic Cathedral is a must-visit for history lovers.

There are a handful of beaches you can visit, many with water sports facilities, although Vlichos remains a favorite for sun-worshippers as it is considered the most beautiful with its backdrop of pine trees.

We stay overnight in Hydra, allowing time to wander the atmospheric old town at dusk, where you’ll find lively bars and clubs. You can even join a late-night party on the beach.

⚓️ Donkey Ride

On the fifth day of our ocean cruising, we sail towards a revered gem of the Aegean – the Ermioni village. With a traditional pebbled road, lined up with cozy tavernas, Ermioni has its charm.. However, its compact size and layout means it’s just as easy to navigate on foot, where you can stroll its romantic cobble-stoned backstreets and narrow village walkways.

As the heat rises, spend the afternoon in the calm waters swimming or by SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) in the tranquil bay on the Ermioni coastline, or pass the time idly dining in a tavern, awaiting one of the best sunsets in Greece.

⚓️Nafplio Bus Tour

We will moor at the tiny fishing village of Perdika, perched on the idyllic eastern shores of Aegina Island, known for its temple of Athena Aphaia.

Here you can indulge in some the Saronic Islands’ best seafood, as well as spend the afternoon swimming in the crystal-clear waters and wandering around the picture-perfect bay, before heading to the taverna-lined harbour for the last Greek island feast.

After a refreshing morning swim in the sparkling blues of the Aegean Sea, we’ll set sail for our final destination on your island-hopping sailing trip. Enjoy the sea breeze and ocean views as you relax onboard.

We’ll arrive back in Athens in plenty of time for you to continue your exploration of the city. Our crew will be on hand to give you some top tips and local insights, to find corners of the city you wouldn’t otherwise know.

⚓️Athens Guided Tour

Departure Day

As we come back in full circle to Athens, this is our departure day, where you’ll be saying goodbye to your new friends and your crew.

Hopefully, we will see you again next year for more sailing around the Greek islands.

Frequently asked questions

Harmony cruises are party tours ideal for independent like-minded travelers from 18-35s. You will explore the most famous islands in the world, the Greek islands and experience the best nightlife.

They depart From Athens every Saturday at 3pm, from May till October. For specific dates see our calendar.

The cruise finishes every Saturday at 09:00 after breakfast.

Do you prefer exploring the Greek islands, traveling for hours with other thousands of people, getting queued to embark on the public boats, waking up at crazy hours to be on time, carrying your bags everywhere, changing from hostel to hostel, rather than travel with your private boat, having your own bed from day 1 to day 8 with no movements, exploring beaches and hidden gems of the Aegean sea and still have the same fun with your friends?

We do have a variety of cabins, which range from doubles to twins (lower beds-bunk beds) to triples and a few quads, depending on the operating gulet.

All cabins besides, their comfortable mattresses, are ensuite with their own shower, a hair dryer, a wardrobe for storage, reading lights, their own individual A/C device and an electric fan!

If you want to be in the same cabin with your friends, just mention it, while booking with us. We can not guarantee that you will be together, but we will make everything possible to actually do that!

Please keep in mind, that we provide 1 set of fresh linen and towels, for the cruising week.

Many of our guests, choose to travel alone, as it follows the basic idea of our cruises. Independent individuals, come alone but travel with same-like-minded people, so many in the end, actually become friends!

Please know, that if you are traveling solo, we will always try to allocate you to a cabin, with your same gender.

On the other hand, if you desire to have your own private cabin, there will be an extra charge of 50% of the total amount of 1 person’s price

In general, if you skip Mykonos, in the Greek islands you can find cheap food and drinks everywhere. You can eat from 1 “souvlaki” that costs only 2 euros and Greeks eat it as a meal or a proper meal at a restaurant that costs around 8 – 15 € p.p. Drinks cost from 5 – 10 € for cocktails.

Yes all local taxes are included in your cruise. There is only a 20 € p.p. port tax for the whole week. So on every island we visit, you will not pay anything extra for port/local taxes. There is only 1 exception, in Santorini, when due to weather conditions sometimes our boats are not able to dock at the old port and there is a need for a local transport between our boat and the port with smaller local boats. The cost for that transfer is 5€ p.p. one way.

Water is offered complimentary by us, only during meal courses, so water is NOT included in your package!

If you want any extra water, we offer 1.5L bottles (Natural mineral Water), at 2€

The A/C, operates from 4 to 8 hours, per day (if of course, it is permitted by the government’s Covid regulations).

Also note, that the A/C works only when the generator is working at the exact same time. Though, due to local regulations, the generator must be turned off, after midnight.

The power supply, from the shore at the ports of Corfu, Kassiopi, Sivota and Gaios (due to their weak infrastructure), is not powerful enough to operate all our A/C units, simultaneously. Thus you must keep in mind, that there are possibly hot nights, especially during July and August, where the A/C, does not work after midnight.

Please keep in mind, that all our cabins are equipped with independent electric fans, as well, hence when our boats are connected to the shore’s power supply, our fans work properly, during the night, as well.

Any means of transportation, such as local buses, taxis, or even water taxis, are not included, in any of our cruise packages. However, we would be more than happy to arrange any possible transportation, for you!

A standard “airport to the vessel (and vice versa)” transfer, is around 25-30€ per person (depending on the Island), while shorter, in-town transportation would vary, between 8€ and 15€ per person.

In case you want to arrange your transportation, prior to your arrival, send us an email, at: [email protected] or [email protected]

Our gulets share quite a number of electrical sockets, both on the inside and the outside, of the vessel.

With this in mind, and as we do provide extension cords and multi-docking stations, you will be able to charge your devices, either while cruising while the generator is active, or while docked at port!

You are able to have a shower, any time of the day, but keep in mind that when the boat is docked at some of the ports we visit, the engines are turned off, the water flow is reduced and as a result, there is no hot water after midnight.

Water tanks on board are limited, meaning, when multiple cabins shower simultaneously, hot water is more likely to end.

If your shower does not have hot water, please inform your captain in order to open the water heater, and please wait for at least, 15 to 20 minutes, until it heats up the water again.

Our Mykonos Cruise is under a Brunch option, which basically is a buffet-style brunch course, served at around 13:00.

Click here , to see our detailed brunch menu!

Please note, that all courses include water, though if you want extra, a 1.5L water bottle, is at 2€

We do respect our passenger’s food preferences and requirements and that is why our Chefs, in case it is needed, will prepare optional dishes, as well.

(vegetarian, lactose-free, pescatarian, vegan, etc.)

As we use to say here, we are like a hostel in the water. So, yes feel free to bring any personal food or drinks you want on board. Our idea is to support your budget and travel cheaper. Please keep in mind that is not allowed to consume food and drinks inside our cabins and also there is no communal fridge that can be used for storage.

Adventure traveling, like Island hopping, requires travel insurance and we strongly suggest, purchasing one! For further details, please review our travel insurance section.

All gulets, including ours, are hybrids, which means that although they do have a motor engine, they can run on wind energy, as well, through its huge sails.

That said, operating a cruise solely on wind energy, is something quite unpredictable, thus, we prefer relying on, and scheduling each week, based on the gulet’s ability to use its motor engines!

All the gulets in our fleet, have only European-type sockets.

Note: It is mandatory to know this beforehand, as the electrical items/devices you want to bring on board, need to agree, with this specification.

We have travelers from all over the world, and we are truly delighted about this!

Most of our passengers are Australian, British, German, Spanish, Croatian, French, Italian, South African, Canadian and American!

So, most of our passengers are mainly English speakers!

In order to get all the necessary updated information about Visa and passport requirements, please check our Visa & Passport section!

In order to support the local community and give back to its (our) people, all our gulets have multinational crew members. Though, English is the number one onboard-speaking language!

All our gulets can carry up to, approximately 20 to 25 passengers, with an average cabin number of 7. (double/twins – triples)

Keep in mind, that all our vessels have fair space onboard, for literally all the passengers they will, eventually, accommodate!

At the time of your booking/inquiry, remember to specify who your fellow travelers are. This way, we will try to make all the necessary arrangements to accommodate you, all together, on the same vessel!

Please keep in mind though, that we can not guarantee this, for close-to-date cruises!

Even if we believe, that it is impossible for someone, to wish to “abort” our sailing cruise earlier than its scheduled disembarkation, You are of course, free to leave, whenever you like!

The only restriction though, is that in order for you to leave earlier, the gulet needs to be docked at a marina/port, and not on some remote cove!

Of course, in case you happen to leave earlier and want us to help you with your transportation, feel free to let us know, by sending an email, at: [email protected] or [email protected]

In the unfortunate event, of losing your departure, you have the option to either “catch” us on the next Island/destination, via commercial ferry, or bus. (if accessible)

In any case, if something like that is to happen, try to inform us prior to the actual departure time, by calling us at our Head Office, at: +30 211 215 2595

As personal privacy, is of paramount importance to us, we cannot provide you with any of your fellow travelers’ details, prior to your actual cruise day.

However, if you are interested to meet other people that travel on the same tour as you, feel free, to head to our Facebook page and introduce yourself to our lovely community!

Destination Must-See's

Greece ms1

This is the most spectacular destination in the Mediterranean and holds the most prehistoric settlement in the region. The ancient town of Akrotiri was once destroyed and consequently preserved by a volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C. The excavation site of this city is known as the “Minoan Pompeii.” But perhaps the island’s greatest draws are its vineyards, whitewashed chapels, volcanic cliffs, and famous wines of Santorini.

Known as the “whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades islands” or the “Island of the Winds,” it is said that the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. It also gets its name from the grandson of Apollo - “Mykonos.” In the island’s capital town you will find the church, town hall, castle, the Archaeological, Folklore, and Maritime Museums, and a shopper’s paradise – Matoyianni Street.

Greece ms3

Athens is the capital city of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. It is home to many celebrated ancient monuments including the imposing Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Gate – the symbolic entrance to the city. It also has the charming Plaka neighborhood which has been without interruption since antiquity.

Greece ms4

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C. You can walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium, witness amazing sculptures at the museum, or even attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

Destination Must-Do's

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Greece md2

Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. The site includes two sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings that were mostly intended for sports. The earliest finds in Delphi date back to 4000 B.C. from the Korykeion Andron, a cave where the first rituals took place. The ruins are filled with an enormous amount of history and beauty.

Greece md3

Greek Olive Farm:

Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean diet, and Greece is a major grower and producer of olive products. A visit to a Greek olive farm can provide a taste of Greek culture and serve as a window into everyday life in the country. Tours, tastings, meals, and cooking classes hosted at olive farms are all wonderful options on the table when venturing into Greece’s countryside.

Greece md4

Travel back in time with a visit to Athens’s old city – the Plaka. The hilly cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings housing small shops, sidewalk cafes and family-owned restaurants making this neighborhood Athens’ crowned jewel. The neighborhood comes alive at night. The alleyways fill with music and dancing and locals and visitors alike dine on their favorite traditional dishes.

The 9 Best Party Destinations in Greece: Greek Nightlife

best party destinations in Greece

From sun-soaked beaches to mouth-watering mezze, rich ancient history sights to pine-studded mountain trails, Greece has oodles up its sleeve. And it’s also a pretty pumping place when the sun goes down. Yep, check out this guide to the best party destinations in Greece to get a feel for nine spots where you can let loose and be merry…

We’ve gone for a good mix of spots. There are a few buzzy 18-30s resorts that have a dedicated nightlife strip where you’ll find neon-lit DJ bars clustered together with karaoke joints and all-night venues. But we’ve also added a few more local options, where you should find that the nightlife scene is a touch more nuanced and different.

It’s worth noting that most of the best party destinations in Greece listed below really start getting off the hook when the summer swings around. The season usually officially launches in early June and winds up in the last weeks of August, and some places go into hibernation for the winter months. The bigger city of Athens is probably the only exception to that rule – there’s nightlife in the Greek capital all year round.

Table of Contents

Malia Greece

Malia is a coastal town on the north side of the stunning Greek island of Crete , just an easy 30-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport. Though it sits in the middle of a resort area that’s packed with family-friendly hotels, it’s best known as one of the country’s most happening 18-30s party meccas.

The heart of the town is given over to the nightlife hub of The Strip. A 2-kilometer stretch of nightclubs and bays, it’s brimming with some of the liveliest clubs on the island – Candy Club, Zig Zags, Apollo. Each has its own vibe, but the style of music is pretty much chart and house and EDM throughout. Other events on offer include booze cruises, paint parties, and the occasional music festival. There are often wristbands on sale that can get you plenty of discounts on events and experiences across Malia.

When you’re done partying, be sure to check out the inviting Greek tavernas close to the shore, and the old Minoan palace complex of Malia. That lies just above pretty Potamos Beach a touch to the east of The Strip.

Photo of nightclub in Zante

Zakynthos, also known as Zante , is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It’s one that usually hits the travel brochures thanks to the eye-wateringly stunning bay of Shipwreck Beach . However, there’s also party to be had, courtesy of the resort town of Laganas, which sits neatly on the far south coast, just 20 minutes from the Zakynthos Airport.

Head here and you’ll find a huge choice of accommodation and many hotels that host their own pool parties and events during the day. The clubs and bars for later on are dotted along the main road, and many of them are open till 6am, so you can guarantee a late night. Popular spots include Cocktails and Dreams, Plus Club, and Waikiki. Many groups spend their nights trying out each of the venues in a bar crawl and there are also companies which can organize this for you .

Laganas also happens to be home to a beautiful beach that has famously clear waters and white-gold fine sand. It’s also really close to the so-called Turtle Island, where you can go snorkeling with the rare sea creatures in the wild , hangover permitting, of course.

Photo of nightlife in Mykonos- beachside bar

Mykonos is one of the Cyclades Islands that strings through the heart of the Aegean Sea. It’s been known as a cosmopolitan party hub since at least the 1970s, drawing a regular crowd of celebrities, influencers, and partygoers. In fact, it is often referred to as the country’s answer to Ibiza, so has a certain place on this list of the best party destinations in Greece.

From rowdy to posh, there’s a huge range of options when it comes to a night out in Mykonos . There are plenty of options throughout Mykonos Town, with popular venues including Tropicana club, Moni, Addiction Club, and the perennial fav of Skandinavian Bar. Venture out of town and you’ll also find beach clubs down on Super Paradise Beach and Pssarou that host world-famous DJ acts in the summer months.

The neighborhood of Little Venice is also worth a special mention. Here, you’ll find winding pathways and hidden alleyways with plenty of seaside bars and restaurants boasting magnificent views. It’s an all-in-one sunset drinking and late-night dancing spot that’s replete with options and LGBTQ+ friendly spaces.

Kos

Kos Town is located on the northwestern edge of Kos, one of Greece’s eastern Dodecanese islands. Along with nearby Rhodes, it’s a very popular tourist destination and an epic spot for folks looking to party . Kos Town can be reached from Kos Airport in around just 30 minutes, or you can get a boat over from Turkey!

Most of the nightlife in Kos Town can be found along the popular Bar Street. That hosts pubs, bars, and clubs that open until the early hours of the morning. Many venues will often have drink deals or discounted entry. The most popular spots include West Bar, Zero Café, and the Mylos Beach Bar.

You might also want to venture over to the south coast of the island. Not only is that a haven for beaches but it’s the home of the second nightlife center of Kos: Kardamaina. More of an out-and-out 18-30s resort, that one’s got youthful student bars with cheap happy-hour drinks and one or two clubs dotting the central square.

The island of Kos is notably famous for its abundance of beautiful beaches with plenty of sunbeds and parasols for a day of relaxation. There are also a number of beach bars and restaurants with many venues like Kavo Paradiso and Baltic Beach Bar organizing beach parties throughout the year.

Overlooking Ios

No beating around the wild-thyme bush here: Ios is pretty darn crazy in the summer months. If Mykonos is the beach-party mecca of the Cyclades, Ios kinda’ of just ditches the beach part of that. It’s almost entirely focused on nightlife, with the action centered on the enchanting Chora town on the western shoreline just up from the port.

The main road – conveniently called Main Road – leading through the town is the place to be. It pumps with DJ clubs and cocktail bars from around 6pm every evening and doesn’t wind up again until the sun comes up. The best venues are the Lost Boys Bar, Voodoo, Jar Bar, and Click.

Also, we know you’re here for the hedonism and all that, but it’s definitely worth having at least one day on Ios that’s not consumed by a hangover. The reason? Most travelers don’t do that, so you’ll find the more far-flung beaches can be totally deserted. They are also fantastic – check out Paralia Agia Theodoti in the easy or lovely Magganari in the south.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is often overlooked by partiers on their way to the island-based best nightlife destinations in Greece. But the town of the north certainly has the credentials of a place that can offer something wild once the sun has set. It’s close to the Balkans, so brings in holidaymakers from Hungary, Croatia , and beyond. It has a huge student population. All good so far.

There are two main hubs for the action here. Start on the Beach Promenade. It’s riddled with tavernas and bars that have great happy-hour deals at sunset, along with menus of Aegean-Balkan fusion food that’s not quite like what you get in the rest of the country. Then, move up to Ladadika, the hipster district, where dance bars spill onto the cobbled alleys.

Thessaloniki is nice and close to the trio of headlands that is Halkidiki. You can go there in the day for your fix of sun and sand if you like. Alternatively, if you have the energy, there’s always Mount Chortiatis and the Kerkini Lake National Park for hiking and outdoor explorations .

Photo of party nightclub in Kavos

Kavos is a seaside resort in the south of Corfu , a popular Greek island in the Ionian Sea, located 1.5 hours’ drive from Corfu Airport. As in many of the other Greek party resorts on this list, the main attraction for hedonists here is the 2km strip of bars, nightclubs, and restaurants that forms the backbone of the town.

During the summer, you can hit that roadway to enjoy a variety of themed nights and entertainments, ranging from karaoke to foam parties. Popular venues include Snobs Bar, SOS pub, and Barn Bar. Future Club is a famous superclub in Kavos, known for its laser shows, special effects, and multiple dance rooms. It’s also the spot with the biggest DJ names on the roster.

There are multiple hotels available within a short walking distance from the strip with many hosting events throughout the day to get the party started. Kavos also happens to have a reputation for considerably lower prices than other party resorts, making it the perfect choice if you are on a budget. During the day, be sure to check out the lovely beaches of the Corfu west coast (especially Palaiokastritsa) or head to the nearby waterpark to get the adrenaline pumping.

Athens city

If you’re on the hunt for an all-year party destination in Greece that doesn’t stop just because the summer ends, Athens is the place to be. Yep, the forever-lively capital of the country isn’t all about being awed by the ruins of Acropolis hill and the great treasures of the Parthenon Museum, you know? It’s also a happening place with plenty going on after dark…

We especially like traipsing through the Plaka district at sunset time. It’s the main tourist part of Athens but has oodles of enticing taverna kitchens and rooftop beer bars that open onto views of the Acropolis. After that, you can move down to the café-bars that occupy the corners north of Monastiraki Square, or go for hipster drinking in craft beer joints in Koukaki.

The area of Exarchia has also established itself as a wild party hub. It’s gritty, edgy, and rough around the edges. You’ll need to be careful there, but will be rewarded with rollicking rock joints and alt music venues come art galleries. For something chicer, consider moving south to the so-called Athenian Riviera, which offers sleek bars on the beachfront in Asteras and Vouliagmeni.

Faliraki

Rhodes makes it onto our list of the best party destinations in Greece for one reason: Faliraki. Up there with Kavos and Malia as one of the biggest young person’s summer resorts in the Med, it’s a ceaseless shindig from the end of May to the start of September each year.

The action is anchored on the Faliraki Strip. Also called Ermoi Street, it’s about a 300-meter run of bars and eateries that connects to the beachfront in the east. Along there is where you’ll find the most famous hotspots in the town, including the Aussie-themed Bondi Bar Faliraki and the karaoke hub of Jimmy’s Bar. Later on, you could opt for some reggaeton at Jamaica Bar or hit Yolo for some bigger DJ shows.

What we love about a party in Rhodes is that it’s easy to mix in trips to awesome beaches and soaring mountains. You can escape to the south to hit Anthony Quinn Bay, where there’s some epic snorkelling , or drive up into the peaks to find rustic villages like Eleousa. It’s even possible to continue on to Turkey, thanks to all the direct boats linking Rhodes Town with Datca.

Which part of Greece is best for nightlife?

There are loads of parts of Greece that are great for nightlife. If you want to combine hedonism with trips to stunning beaches, we’d recommend Zante or Corfu. For a longer season that stays warm into October, think about heading south to Crete. For parties with the locals outside of the main tourist season, Athens is probably the best choice.

Is Greece good for partying?

Greece is a great place for partying. There are just so many lively destinations to choose between, including the beach-fronted strip of Kavos and the urban energy of Athens. On top of that, Greece tends to be a little more affordable as a summer party destination than some of the other spots in Europe, like Ibiza, for example.

When is the best time to party in Greece?

The summer season is the main party season in Greece. That means you should come between May and September to enjoy the busiest resorts and biggest events. You should also find it easier to get flights to islands like Rhodes and Mykonos then, as lots of the connections are seasonal.

I recommend it 100%

It was the best experience I had in Athens . I saw the sunset from the boat it was unique experience for me . But the best part was when we sailed into the Athens riviera near luxury hotels and yachts . Thank you all day cruise 😍

This was my third time in Athens and this city never disappointed me. We wanted to go on the semi-private night cruise but as it starts in June, we were able to book it privately just for us. It was a more expensive option but we’re so happy we went for it. Staff was friendly and super helpful, they really made an effort to surpass expectations. We are a group of 11 people and we had such a fabulous evening and we highly recommend this to anyone visiting Athens for a few days. Thank you All Day Cruise for a memorable evening!

Island Of Spinalonga, Crete, Greece

You literally could not have an article about Greek party islands without mentioning Crete. The resort of Malia is one of the biggest party resorts in Europe and is right up there with the mighty Ibiza.

With plenty of stunning beaches, blue waters, and some of the busiest and best club nights in Greece , Crete is a mecca for anyone looking to party hard this summer.

Apart from the awesome bars and nightclubs on offer like HELP Bar, the Bikini Beach, or the famous Camelot Castle, there are also regular booze cruises, boat parties, paint parties, and even full moon parties across the island.

The Aegean Sky Hotel-Suites are well-known for their party atmosphere, as is the Real Palace , both located in central Malia.

For a more intimate setting, try Sunshine Boutique Hotel , and sun seekers will love Meropi Hotel .

Thessaloniki Cityscape

While this city is not an island, it still deserves an honorable mention as a party destination. With an eclectic music scene and nightclubs tucked away in converted industrial spaces, Thessaloniki is popular with jet-set Europeans and mainland Greeks during the summer months.

From live rock concerts to hardcore club nights, it is an established party fixture for holidaymakers worldwide . You can even enjoy some of the finest Bouzouki entertainment in Greece or place your bets in one of the most deluxe casinos in Europe.

The ultra-modern Stay Hybrid Hostel is clean, cool, and welcoming, while the Thess Hostel is quirky and cute, and located right in the center of town.

The Greek Party Islands really do offer something for everyone. Remember, some are harder to get to than others, and you may need to transfer by boat. But if you really want first-class clubbing experiences in stunning surroundings, you can’t get better than these.

Mykonos takes the top spot as the number one Greek party island with clubs like Cavo Paradiso, Skandinavian Disco, Space Dance. Coming in a close second is Ios with another stellar reputation as a party island.

Some parts of Santorini can be good for parties but for the most part, it’s quieter than some of the other islands like Mykonos or Ios.

Mykonos is famous as a party destination and is also known as the Ibiza of Greece.

This does come down to personal preference, but Mykonos would suit someone more for a beach holiday and to go to town on the nightlife. Santorini lacks the stunning beaches that Mykonos offers, nor does it have the same level of nightlife, but it’s certainly the more romantic.

Most of the nightlife can be found in Fira whilst Oia also has a bit going on, but this is more lounge bars rather than clubs.

Best time to visit.

Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 85°-100°F ( 30°-38°C ).

By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes   Athens   and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs

Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama, and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.

Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.

With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine favors simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill, and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri, and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savor a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavored ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete), and retsina (white wine flavored with pine resin).

Geography and environment

Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey, and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts, and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land in Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes, and grain for export and local use.

Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos, and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands.

History and government

Early history.

The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas, and thought movements.

Recent history

In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognized as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles, and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia, and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

Shopping hours vary throughout Greece. Stores in large cities and tourist areas are typically open from 9 am to 9 pm, while shops in other areas close around 2 or 3 pm and reopen between 6 and 9 pm three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). Most stores are closed on Sundays.

Things to buy in Greece

1. Komboloi (Worry Beads)

These stress-relieving resin beads are meant to be turned through your fingers as you muse over life. With roots deep in ancient Greek cultural tradition, they make a great souvenir for friends wanting a slice of authentic Greece.

2. Botanical Skincare

Greece is home to many brands of premium, organic skincare. Stock up on luxurious olive oil soap or enriching yogurt-based moisturizers before you head home.

Travel safely and ward off evil by attaching a Mati (an ‘Evil Eye’) to your backpack. They’re cheap, available almost everywhere in Greece, and are a great reminder of your travels in the Aegean.

Whether you prefer gold, silver, amber resin or colorful beads, Greece has a huge variety of jewelry on offer. Prices are typically lower than in many other parts of the world, so it’s likely you’ll be able to snap up a few bargains.

Festivals and events

The Greeks have been partying since the dawn of Western civilization. Take Epicurus – he dedicated his life to seeking out pleasure, creating a philosophy now known as Epicureanism. As you travel through Greece you’ll encounter religious celebrations – Greek Orthodox is the main player here – that span the nation, as well as smaller celebrations that are regional affairs or isolated to particular islands. Expect food, drink, dancing and music, and plenty of throwbacks to the ancient Greeks. The only Greek tragedy is that you can’t fit every festival in.

When is the best time to visit Greece?

Greece is best experienced outside of winter for most travelers. The best time of year depends on what kind of holiday you’re after – whether you’re more interested in soaking up the island sun or ancient history.

Is it safe to visit Greece?

Greece has historically been a very safe place to visit though petty crime, like pickpocketing, can be an issue in well-touristed areas. Travelers should remain alert when visiting crowded places and keep an eye on their belongings.

Do you need a visa for Greece?

Greece is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Greece, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Greece.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Greece?

There is not a strong tradition of tipping in Greece, particularly among the locals, but it’s become expected that tourists leave small tips while traveling through the country.

What is the internet access like in Greece?

You’ll be able to find wi-fi at most hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the well-touristed areas of Greece. Alternatively, you can pick up a local SIM card with a data package for continued access.

Can I use my cell phone in Greece?

If you wish to use your cell phone while in Greece and you are not from an EU country, you’ll need to pick up a local SIM card or activate global roaming before you leave home.

What are the toilets like in Greece?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Greece. You may need to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some areas. Keep in mind that the Greek plumbing system isn’t the greatest and you may be asked to put toilet paper in the trash rather than flushing it.

Can I drink the water in Greece?

Drinking the water in Athens and Thessaloniki is safe unless otherwise marked. On the islands, however, the water may not be suitable to drink.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Greece?

Credit cards are widely accepted in  Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.

It’s still worth having some euros on hand, if only to tip the bartender at your favorite island bar and guarantee quick service all evening.

What is ATM access like in Greece?

ATMs can be easily found in cities and towns across Greece, including on the Greek Islands.

What is the weather like in Greece?

Greece’s coast and islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and windy, rainy winters, while the inland regions have a more continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. In the northern mountains, close to the Bulgarian border, the winters are cold with heavy snowfall , while the summers are relatively mild.

Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Greece is one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ holiday destinations in the world, with a long history of same-sex relationships dating back to Sappho, the Greek poet, whose home island of Lesvos has become a pilgrimage site for lesbians. Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognized since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Greece accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Though access to sights and hotels has improved in Athens over recent years, Greece is a difficult destination for travelers with disabilities. It’s a hilly, rocky place covered in cobblestones, particularly on the islands, and the economic situation has meant that there are minimal public funds to improve the situation.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Greece?

What to pack for Greece will depend on where you're going and what time of year you decide to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential all year round, as is a jumper in case a cool wind blows.

If you visit in summer, you’ll need light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear and sandals.

If you’re heading to the mountains on the mainland, it’s best to be prepared for everything as the weather can change quickly.

What are some common phrases to learn before traveling to Greece?

Greek is a very difficult language to learn. However, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals, but it'll allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you meet along the way.

How many islands are there in Greece?

There are roughly 6,000 islands and islets in Greece, of which only about 200 are populated. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of fascinating sites.

How will I travel around Greece?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Greece, you may find yourself traveling by:
