Unmissable day

My husband did a couple of bone fishing days with Captain Victor which he rated highly. Today we did a family boat trip over to the area of water between Mexico & Belize. Within 10 minutes of being out in the bay we saw a shark, rays and a pod of dolphins. We then went to the mangroves off Belize which is mystical almost prehistoric place. Sadly we didn't see a manatee, but I understand they're often there. We then went snapper fishing, catching loads for supper which Victor kindly filleted. After a stop for amazing snorkelling in crystal clear water with hundreds of coral heads and tons of fish we had drinks and snacks. We didn't see another boat all day. The whole area is scenically beautiful and Captain Victor is a wonderful guide. Don't miss it.

We had great fishing on our trip to Xcalak—-even though the elusive permit remained that way, we caught a wide variety of fish—many bone fish and snook, as well as barracuda, tarpon, snapper, yellowtail jack and a number of others. We fished for six days with a break of one day in the middle and had good weather, generally, with no rain and only one overcast day. The wind blew nearly every hour we were there, but the bays and lagoons offer shelter and we found our spots. We had three different guides during our time there: Victor; his son, Andres; and their associate, Alberto. Victor works out of Xcalak, and is senior of the three. Andres grew up on these waters, and Alberto has been guiding them for thirteen years. No lack of experience here. In addition, the older two men worked as commercial lobster divers before they became fishing guides. This is almost always sight-fishing, and these men are very keen indeed. Even after several days, I was only picking up perhaps a third of the fish they were seeing. If you learn to handle and haul a nine-weight accurately up to 70’, then all will be well. Weather and season permitting, if you go out with any of these gentlemen, you’re going to catch fish. I’ll mention that there are hundreds of square miles of sandy flats, very blue and beautiful. On one occasion. we saw a fever of up to forty rays moving together. Apparently, when the rays stir up the bottom, they attract feeding bone fish, so look for milky water. If you’re wading be prepared: wear foot protection and slowly shuffle along when moving. Victor tells me that while guiding us, he sighted the biggest ray he had seen in these waters for many years. He estimated at well over five feet in width. Shuffle along, that is.

My husband has done a little fly fishing in the northeast US and wanted to try ocean fly fishing. He couldn't have met a better guide than Victor at Osprey tours. He was knowledgeable, helpful, patient and entertaining. Best guided tour he ever had.

I went out for a day with these guys, and they were great. Definitely plenty of fish in Chetumal bay!

Xcalak Fly fishing with Captain Victor. It was December 2014 my 63rd birthday and a couple of days after Captain Victor had celebrated is own. It turned out to be a very memorable one thanks to the great job Captain Victor did. I love to fly fish but on a scale of 1-10 I am at best a 6 when it comes to casting. Captain Victor was very patient and had great tips to help my technique. I had been out with other guides a few times and caught a few fish but nothing like going out with the Captain. He took us to places close to where the other guides had taken us but it was way better. We had bone fish and permit rods loaded and found spots where both could possibly be caught. Lots of bones but didn't see too much permit. I loved walking the flats hunting Bones. We slipped over a small dune and came upon a lagoon with nothing but Bone fish relaxing in the sun. It was quite something. I had to side cast because of the mangroves but caught a couple and had a great time. Carried on to some bays where I had fished before, this time hit fish like crazy. It was so good. When I come back to Xcalak I will make sure that I book Captain Victor for at least a week! By the way I probably would have caught more fish had I not been wearing a bright red shirt! Thanks Captain Victor!

Jardines de la Reina, Cuba

Fly-fishing Cuba is unapparelled to many other salt water destinations. The diversity of the species and quality waters with little angling pressure makes this place amazing.

Jardines de la Reina or Gardens of the Queen is amazing! Only in recent years has this flats fishery been developed, and you are fishing waters that have not seen sport fishing for nearly fifty years. Cuba has given these pristine areas protection as Cuban National Marine Parks, where no commercial fishing is allowed other than for lobster. Flats fish like Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Snook, Mutton Snapper, Barracuda, and a variety of Jacks are found in incredible numbers and since the fishing pressure is so light in these areas the fish rarely encounter sport fishermen and are unusually easy to catch.

Avalon has several operations spread throughout Cuba in which all have a slightly different appeal. Cayo Largo is located about 40 miles south of Cuba. This operation offers great fishing for Permit as well as Tarpon, Bone Fish and Snook. This region is a must for the salt water angler who is looking to hit the Grand Slam which is hooking into three types of the mentioned species.

The region is so diverse you can walk beautiful sand flats for hours on a day hunting large Bone Fish and Permit. You can cast to Snook in the Mangroves trying to tease them out, or rip streamers tight up against the sand beaches where they like to cruise along looking for small prey. Mangroves offer great Tarpon fishing, and this is also where large Snappers readily take your fly.

Your stay is on a very nice yacht style boat with comfortable rooms, good food and plenty of unspoiled waters to chase all sorts of fish. Another option to the Yacht stays, they do offer resort style accommodation on land.  Guides are very experienced and throwing shots to Permit, Tarpon, or Bonefish from the deck of a flats boat is the best it can get.

Your day starts with a great breakfast followed by your guide meeting you at the boat to discover various flats to fly fish all sorts of species like Tarpon, Bone fish (big bones), Permit, and Snook. Travelling from flat to flat there are lots of creeks in which you will hook into several types of Mutton Snapper, small Sharks, Jack Crevalle, Barracudas and numerous other types of fish.

After fishing both Cayo Largo and staying at the resort fishing Gardens of the Queen, the quality of your fishing experience is second to none. There is never a dull moment as the waters are pristine and teaming with fish.

Many airlines offer great flights to connect you directly to Cayo Largo from Canada.
