  • The natural landscape of Poros with its shores and coves

Description of the cruise from Athens to Aegina, Hydra and Poros islands

The cruise will start early in the morning. You will be received at the Port of Piraeus by the hostess and a warm welcome from the crew of the ship and you can either enjoy a soft drink at the lounge or stay at the open deck to watch the departure.

Soon after the departure, you will need to assemble to the main lounge where you will be given all the information you will need for the islands and your stay on the ship during the cruise.

The green island of Poros

poros island near athens

Two hours after the departure the cruise will take you to the island of Poros , which is the smallest of the islands you will be visiting, but also the greenest, with the most interesting coastline.

Poros is separated from the mainland of the Peloponnese Peninsula by a narrow strait that creates a truly unique landscape. The leisure time in Poros is approximately 50 minutes and you have ample time to walk down its small streets and take as many pictures as you like.

Hydra, the island with no cars

hydra island near athens

Continuing the cruise, you will be arriving at the port of Hydra , almost an hour and 15 minutes later. We recommend you to be on the deck to watch the arrival because the island of Hydra is amphitheatrically shaped and offers a unique view when entering the port.

The landscape of the island of Hydra is dramatic and is adorned by the traditional mansions and stone houses that reflect the richness of the island and its old citizens. You will notice right away that there are no cars on the island. Indeed, no vehicles are allowed, so you can only walk, take a bicycle, a donkey, or hire a water taxi to visit one of the more remote villages of the island!

Hydra is the ideal island to stroll; beautifully paved streets, quite many stairs, and a truly captivating seaside promenade. This is probably the island you will adore due to its uniqueness. You will be staying for an hour and a half in Hydra and when you return on the ship you will have a nicely prepared lunch that will give you a full idea of what the Greek cuisine tastes like.

Aegina, the largest of the Saronic islands

the greek island Aegina

Two hours later you will be arriving at Aegina, where you can choose what you want to do. Aegina is the largest of the islands and has a number of interesting sites to explore.

Classical tour on Aegina (optional)

There is a guided bus tour on the island that takes you to the Temple of Athena Aphaia , one of the best-preserved temples in Greece, which is built on a lovely hill and offers spectacular views to the entire island, as well as the Saronic Gulf and even Piraeus. On the way back to Aegina’s port you will make a short stop to the Byzantine Church of St Nectarius.

Panoramic tour on Aegina (optional)

The second option you have is the Panoramic Tour that will take you across the island to get an overview of the natural landscape. You will not get to see the archaeological site with this tour though. The tour will end with a stop by the seaside where you can enjoy a small meal with Greek meze dishes and ouzo!

NOTE. You can buy the tickets for both optional shore trips on board so that you do not need to worry about it.

When you return to the cruise ship, do not think that the cruise is over. The best is yet to come! The crew of the ship along with dancers and singers will dress in their original Greek costumes and offer you a Greek Traditional Folk Show on board, to animate you during the return to the Port of Piraeus. The main goal is to feel rejuvenated with this cruise, but also entertained!

The cruise from Athens to Poros, Hydra, and Aegina is by far the most popular cruise in Greece: elegant boats, delicious food, live music + dance, and a sea of happy faces from all over the world on a wonderful voyage to three Greek islands. Sailing VIP to 3 Greek Islands in 1 day with Evermore Cruises

by Jessica | May 29, 2017 | Things to do | 0 comments

one day cruise from athens to 3 islands

Evermore Cruises offers a one day cruise from Athens that makes stops at three different Greek islands.  This is a MUST for people who are only in Athens for a short time.

Think about it… You go on a long weekend break with your friends to Athens.   When you return back to your office on Monday or Tuesday, you tell your colleagues that you were not only chilling in Athens for the weekend, but also that you went to three different Greek islands.  Then you can casually ask them how many Greek islands they visited over the weekend.  BURN!

Your Instagram feed will be non-stop popping with snaps of you in totally different places, just basically jet-setting around the Saronic Gulf all fabulously.  Hydra, Poros and Aegina are all very different and each have their own allure.

a A post shared by Jessica Abroad (@jessica_abroad) on May 29, 2017 at 10:50am PDT

  • 2.2 Lunch on-board The Cosmos
  • 3.1 Snack time
  • 4.1 Pistachios!
  • 4.2  Put on your dancing shoes

Evermore Cruises VIP

When jet-setting, one must do so in style.  Evermore Cruises offers a VIP Lounge package for the distinguished day-cruiser.  The VIP Lounge is in the front of The Cosmos and totally private from the rest of the boat.  So private that they even give you an electronic key card so you can explore the ship freely and return to your peaceful area with ease.

In the VIP area, coffee, tea and soft drinks are all complimentary as well as some high-end finger food that is served before the arrival at the first island stop.  There is a full bar available inside the lounge and a menu is available if you wish to order additional food items in addition to what they offer.

You are welcome to move about the ship, hang out on the upper decks or grab a snack from one of the numerous snack bars located around the ship.

The VIP Lounge is absolutely top-notch.  The furnishings, service and amenities were great.  I’m not going to lie, the fact that they had multiple wall plugs and USB ports available was really a nice touch!

Evermore Cruise VIP Lounge Athens One Day Cruise

With the VIP package, you are able to select one of the tours offered on the island stops-  Evermore Island Tours .  (I would personally recommend selecting the Temple of Aphaea in Aegina.  I’ll get to that later…)

The picturesque island of Hydra is the first stop of the day.  The ride from Athens to Hydra on the Cosmos took about 3 hours.  The time really flew by and being in VIP with Travel Bloggers Greece made the experience even more enjoyable!

What to do in Hydra for 2 hours

1 hour and 55 minutes to be exact!  This is plenty of time to take in the sights of the port town.  Hydra Town is a timeless village with a different look than the Greek screensavers that perhaps brought you to this magical country.  The port town is lined with stone manors built up along the sloping walls of the sheltered harbor.

Hydra is known as a ‘see and be seen’, cosmopolitan destination in the Aegean.  However, Hydra does not come with the presumed price tag of such a label.  (Check out my post Hydra on a Budget )

Hydra Evermore Athens One Day Cruise

Hydra from Evermore Cosmos

You arrive at the far end of the horseshoe port at 11 am.  Grab a coffee  at the Cool Mule or Prima and keep moving.

Walk along the port until you reach Sunset Restaurant at the opposite side from where you arrived.  When you come back to Hydra the next time to stay overnight , this is where you will catch an amazing sunset.  On your walk back toward the boat, explore a bit up into the alleyways.  Follow the donkeys and see where they are heading.  Don’t wander too far though, Hydra’s narrow alleyways can get confusing and you don’t want to miss your boat!

Lunch on-board The Cosmos

Depending on the weather, you may be very happy to get back into your climate-controlled VIP area of the boat.  Lunch is served at this time between Hydra and Poros.  You will have the option of a few different items as your main along with two fresh salads on the table.  It is after noon at this point, so why not have a nice glass of Greek wine with your meal?

Next stop Poros!

The approach into Poros is really unique because you come in between the mainland and the island (which are really close). You start to see many boats that are anchored in the water, scattering the surface.

Poros Evermore One Day Cruise Athens

Approaching Poros on The Cosmos

Because Poros is so close to the mainland, many Athenians drive there from Athens for the weekend, so if your cruise is on the weekend, expect larger crowds.

The Evermore stop on Poros is only for 50 minutes, so my friend Elena from Passion for Greece  told me, “It’s your first time in Poros, you gotta climb up to the clock tower.”  So that is what I did.  When I got off the boat, I veered left and then saw a sign pointing up some stairs to the tower.  My suggestion is to just follow the crowd.

The scenery is spectacular and much better than what is going on down below in the t-shirt hustling world of tourist shops.

Poros Evermore Athens One Day Cruise

View from the clock tower in Poros

I was already planning the ice-cream treat I was going to have on Aegina when I was boarding the ship in Poros.  I was pretty excited when I found that an afternoon snack spread for us to enjoy while we sailed to our final island destination.  Fruit and traditional Greek cake were laid out for us and as throughout the entire cruise, coffee and tea were available to keep us caffeinated.

Our final stop on this one day cruise is the closest of the Saronic islands to Athens.  A very popular destination on weekends for Athenians wanting an escape.  Aegina is also an easy destination for visitors who want to get to an island, but don’t have much time- obviously, they haven’t heard of this awesome one day cruise and will be sad when they read this.

As I mentioned earlier, I would recommend taking the arranged tour to the temple of Aphaea at this stop.  A very cool historical site to add to your Instagram collection.  A little history never hurt anyone, right?

The Aegina stop is for 2 hours, so you have time to explore the port town if you are not heading to the ancients ruins (which you should be).

Because I have already visited Aphaea, I opted to stroll the streets and explore Aegina Town.  It is very different than the previous two islands.  I’d say Aegina shows signs of distress and it is a port town that has seen better times.  There are many interesting buildings to check out and let your imagination run wild.

Aegina Evermore Athens one Day Cruise

Abandoned building in Aegina

Pistachios!

Aegina is famous for pistachios and I get a real kick out of the pistachio wars that go on along the port.  “Ours are the best!”  “Taste the difference” “Try our pistachio butter, lotion, liquor, spread….”  Definitely take them up on their offers and try it all.  I suggest the caramelized pistachios  (something similar to a brittle).

 Put on your dancing shoes

After everyone is back on board the ship, it is time to head back to Athens. There is live entertainment available during this portion of the trip.  If you still have any energy left- go for it!  This may be your only chance in life to dance ‘Zorba the Greek’ style in Greece!

Depending on the time of year of your cruise, you should be back before sunset.  Nevertheless, the golden hours before sunset are magical on the Aegean Sea.  Enjoy your last moments aboard The Cosmos and mentally prepare yourself for city life again.  Unless you are heading to a hotel in Glyfada , then the tranquility of the life on the water will remain with you.

Hydra, one of the most cosmopolitan Greek islands, is located in the heart of the Argo Saronic Gulf. One of the main reasons why Hydra is a popular destination is its proximity to Athens, as a ferry from Athens to Hydra, will get you to the beautiful island in just 2 hours. It’s the perfect option for a quick getaway! Having been a filming location of “A girl in black” and “Boy on a dolphin” movies, as well as a holiday destination for Leonard Cohen, Hydra stands out for its classy beauty! In Hydra island, you won’t see any cars! Everyone uses their feet, boats or donkeys to get around the island. The cars ban, along with the elegant stone mansions of the island, create a charming atmosphere and make the island one of the most serene destinations near Athens.

Poros is a little island in the heart of the Saronic Gulf, close to Aegina and Agistri. Thanks to its proximity to Athens -just 1-hour ferry ride from Piraeus port- it is a popular destination, especially for weekend getaways from the capital. Perched on the slopes a hill, overlooking the vast Aegean sea and the opposite Galatas, Poros Town is the center of the island’s activity. What’s more, in the picturesque Poros Town, you’ll find a great selection of Poros hotels, shops, cafes, restaurants, and taverns! Its proximity to the rest of the Saronic islands also makes Poros island Greece the perfect base for island hopping in Greece! So, your best bet is to combine your holidays in Poros with getaways to Aegina, Agistri, and Hydra, for the ultimate Saronic experience!

Aegina is an idyllic island very close to Athens, thus a very popular destination for quick getaways. Belonging to the Saronic group of islands, Aegina picturesque has many archaeological monuments, picturesque villages, and beautiful beaches! The center of the island is Aegina Town, the picturesque capital of Aegina. Boasting elegant Neoclassical buildings, narrow alleys and a bustling seafront promenade, Aegina Town is perfect for summer strolls! Aegina is also an island with glorious historical past, as it used to be one of the most important islands of ancient Greece, so it’s not a surprise that sightseeing is one of the best things to do in Aegina! The most impressive archaeological site of the island is the Ancient Temple of Athena Aphaia, dating back to the 6th century BC.

Island Excursions

Hydra walking tour.

One of the most inspirational activities you can enjoy while visiting Hydra is the Hydra Walking Tour. The walk begins at the Merchant Marine Academy, dating from the 18th century, and the statue of ‘Miaoulis’ representing the island’s modern history and strong presence in the War of Independence (1821). There’s the option for a donkey ride (the island’s traditional mode of transportation) before visiting a traditional patisserie (1930) and enjoying its famous macaroons. You’ll delve into local history with a stop at the local flag and its symbolism and visit the square where scenes from a ‘James Bond’ film were shot, as well as square dedicated to the Prime Ministers of Greece originating from Hydra.

Other highlights include ‘Rafalia’, one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, housed in a renovated 19th century neoclassical building, the Monastery of the Assumption of Mary, as well as the Ecclesiastical Museum and the cannons of the island, with a view to the small island where the oldest shipwreck in the world (2,200 BC) was discovered in 1975. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Swimming Tour

Imagine the fun of a short speedboat ride to the crystal waters of a nearby island for a swim. Just a short distance from Aegina, you will have the opportunity to enjoy swimming in the clear sea surrounding either Agistri or Moni, the two picturesque islands close to Aegina (depending on weather conditions). Agistri is just 12 minutes away and Moni only a 7-minute speedboat ride from the port. These beautiful beaches are ideal for swimming surrounded by exquisite natural beauty.

You can swim in the crystal clear waters and enjoy the sandy beaches, next to peacocks and you may even see a deer in the distance. You’ll also have plenty of time to relax at the beach on comfortable lounge chairs, under umbrellas. The tour lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Panoramic Tour

The Panoramic Tour of Aegina leaves lasting impressions. The beauty and quietness of the countryside shed light on the inland character of the island. Enjoy a drive across the entire island (without visiting the archaeological site) admiring the beauty of its nature. Among the memorable sights are the famous Aegina pistachio groves, as well as the island’s medieval capital of Paleohora and the Saint Nektarios Monastery.

For a gastronomic delight, the final stop at a local taverna gives you a true taste of the island’s local cuisine. The tour lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Classical Tour

The Classical Tour of Aegina offers an inspiring experience into the modern history, culture and ancient character of the island, as well as a drive through the countryside where pistachio trees line both sides of the road. Representative of the island’s modern history is the Kapodistrian building, where Ioannis Kapodistrias resided as the first Governor of Greece. A visit to the Temple of Afaia is an unforgettable excursion. The temple is the focal point of the area of the sanctuary, founded in ancient Aegina to commemorate the Minoan deity Afaia, daughter of Zeus and Carme. The temple is in the Dorian style and is considered by many to be the model the Parthenon is Athens.

An impressive highlight of the tour is the Monastery of St. Nektarios, built between 1904-1910 by the Bishop of Pentapolis, Nektarios. Nektarios lived in the Monastery until he died in 1920. In 1961 he was declared a Saint. The church has two tall bell towers and four rows of windows, which all have red bows for a capstone. The Monastery is a convent where presently 14 nuns reside. The memory of the Saint is celebrated on November 9th. The tour lasts about 50 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

You can either purchase the tour on board, as it is not included in the ticket price, or contact us to help you choose the best package.

I visited the islands with my family on my birthday. I appreciated how kind and helpful the stuff was, we felt really special.
Excellent day! The people working at the cruise ship were very helpful. The food was okay.
It was nice, kind stuff, beautiful islands, good to get away from the city and enjoy the calmness the islands have. The kids were very excited even though we got a little sleepy from the sun after a while but either way, it was worth it
4 out of 5 stars. Cruise is OK. It is not over crowded as others wrote, simply Everybody wants to sit outside, but there is not place for everyone. Lunch is great, Simple home food - chicken, fish, rise, salad. 2 cons - 1st loading and unloading of passengers take A LOT of time ( on each isladn) 2nd- there is no point to stop at Poros (2nd island) as you will have max 50 min time to visit it

Can a cosmopolitan island internationally known and esteemed like Hydra, which attracts numerous tourists during the summer months, become the ultimate Christmas destination? The answer is "yes."

Why Senior Travelers Prefer One Day Cruises

While some people may feel melancholic upon retirement, others see this new phase of life as an opportunity to explore the world and engage in activities they couldn't before. As a result, tourism targeting the elderly has become a significant part of overall tourist activity. Although this is gradually changing, it's not surprising that we often associate older individuals with cruises, even day cruises. Let's explore the reasons behind this.

Municipal Art Gallery in Aegina

On September 17, 2023, a long-standing dream came true in Aegina. The inauguration of the Aegina Municipal Art Gallery took place in the area of Agios Nikolaos, housed on the ground floor of the former historic building of OTE near the preserved Marcellus Tower.

one day cruise from athens to 3 islands

FULL DAY CRUISE

Upon arrival to Piraeus, you will receive a warm welcome from our officers and hostesses who will assist you boarding one of our luxurious cruise ships. You proceed to either to the Main Lounge, where our live orchestra will put you in the right mood with their international music repertoire, or keep on to the spacious open decks where you can enjoy the wonderful views as the ship leaves the port. Our showmanm Jeannot will entertain you throughout the day with his imaginative surprises. Poros At 8.15 am, the ship sails for three of the wonderful, beautiful Saronic Islands. The visiting order of the islands is either Poros, then Hydra the Aegina, or Aegina, Poros they Hydra. The visiting order does not change the duration of the stay on any of the islands. Shortly after departure our guides and hostesses will invite you to assemble in one of the lounges in order to give you information concerning the ship, the curse program and the islands. This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you many have. Our trained staff will ensure you have a fantastic day. Within two hours you arrive in Poros, the smallest of the three islands. Poros is separated from Pelopennese by a narrow strait, and the ship affords the best views of the enchanting Poros Town. You will have approximately 50 minutes to take in this lovely village. Hydra Island On leaving Poros, lunch is served. As we sail towards Hydra, the remaining guests can relax in the ship's lounge or enjoy the sun and beautiful panoramic view from one of our spacious decks. An hour and fifteen minutes later, we enter the port of Hydra, whose amphitheatre shape once served as a safe shelter for Saronic Pirates. From the decks, you will be able to admire the very special architecture and dramatic landscapes of this island, whose old traditional stone houses and mansions silently stand witness to a long and turbulent history. As soon as you disembark, the discovery starts - the small narrow stone-paved streets waiting to be explored on foot or by the island's traditional "vehicle" - the saddled donkey. There are captivating walks along the old seaside promenade, crystal clear waters, radiant traditional fine craft shops - the beauty of Hydra will never be forgotten. You will have about an hour and thirty minutes to enjoy the unique charms of Hydra. As you sail on, Apostolos and his dancers will teach you the art of Greek dancing. Aegina island Time passes quickly and after a two-hour trip, we arrive to our last port of call, the island of Aegina. Aegina is the largest of the three islands. Apart from its harbour, there are a number of sites to discover on the island and therefore we propose 3 optional tours. There is a Guided Bus Tour of the island, starting with a visit to the Temple of Aphaia which is the best preserved temple in Greece and one of the three temples forming the famous Sacred Triangle of Greek antiquity. Built on top of a wooded hill, it offers the most magnificent view over the island, the Saronic Gulf, Piraeus and Salamina Island. Our guide will tell you the fascinating story of the intriguing history of this beautiful site and then from there take you for a short visit to the Church of Saint Nectarios, where you can enjoy quiet moments contemplation and admiration of its beautiful Byzantine architecture. The drive back to Aegina Port will give you time relax and appreciate the exquisite peaceful nature of the island. The second tour on Aegina is the Panoramic Bus Tour. This gives you the opportunity to drive across the entire island, without visiting the archeological site. It allows you to admire the beauty of its nature, the islands medieval capital of Paleohora, the Church of Saint Nectarios and the pistachio groves, among other wondrous sites. The tour ends with a stop by the seaside where you can relax and enjoy a glass of ouzo along with a choice of irresistible Greek "Mezedes" (appetisers). Tickets for these highly recommended optional excursions can be purchased on board. The third choice is to stay in Aegina and enjoy a walk or horse-carriage ride around the town or relax in one of the harbor's charming waterfront coffee shops. Greek Dancing on board And if you think that the day ends here, you are mistaken! The highlight of your cruise still awaits! A traditional Greek folk show with singers and dancers in original costumes from all of Greece who, together with our officers, hostesses and the ever amusing Jeannot will entertain you up to the final moment as the ship docks in Piraeus. Finally, we will wish you a warm farewell and while looking forward to seeing you again on one of our cruises!

We worked with Anastasia at Antelope travel, who was amazing. She arranged a four hour tour in Athens and then 3 nights in Mykonos and 3 nights in Santorini. It was a truly amazing trip. All the guides hired by the travel agency (Athens and Delos day trip) were knowledgeable and friendly. The transfers and transportation was timely and efficient. The hotel in Mykonos (Myconian Imperial) was a real treasure.....we loved it. I rarely work with travel agents because I think I can do it on my own, but this trip was truly marvelous because of Anastasia's efforts. We want to thank her for all her help!!

Visit Hydra Island and See the other GREECE

One day Cruise to 3 islands - Hydra / Poros / Aegina... An exceptional cruise to three islands in Argosaronicos, where you will see the other Greece. Departure time at 8.00 am / Return at 7.30 pm

Hydra is an open museum, we visit hydra island as travelers, not as tourists.

Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf. It is separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strip of water. In ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea ( derived from the Greek word for "water"), a reference to the natural springs on the island.

There is one main town, known simply as "Hydra port" (pop. 1,900 in 2011). It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outward from the harbor area. Most of the local residences, as well as the hostelries on the island, are located on these streets. Other small villages or hamlets on the island include Mandraki (pop. 11), Kamini, Vlychos (19), Palamidas, Episkopi, and Molos.

Geography - Demography . The municipality of Hydra consists of the islands Hydra (pop. 1948, area 49.6 km), Dokos (pop. 18, area 13.5 km), and a few uninhabited islets, total area 64.443 km.

Hydra Island island is a very popular tourist destination, mainly due to its picturesque Old Town with its red tiled houses and narrow stone-paved streets. Once a major seafaring community. These days the island’s wealth mainly comes from tourism, but fishermen and farmers can still be found.

Rubbish trucks are the only motor vehicles on the island, since by law, cars and motorcycles are not allowed. Horses, mules and donkeys, and water taxis provide public transportation. The town of Hydra Island is the unique settlement of the island. It counts some 3000 permanent residents and presents the originality that no vehicles are allowed within it. So the people, locals and visitors, go from one place to another only on foot or on donkeys’ back.

The inhabited area, however, is so compact that most people walk everywhere. Hydra benefits from numerous bays and natural harbors, and has a strong maritime culture.

The Town of Hydra Island is amphitheatrically. Arranged within a close bay situated approximately at the middle of the northern coast of the island. Also, it is surrounded by bare rocks and steep mountains. The first impression of the visitor, as the ship reaches the port, is the image of the high impressive Old Mansions overlooking the Town of Hydra Island. What follows is the view of the Old Defensive Bastions with their canons on site, which are still protecting the town from remote and forgotten enemies. Finally the spectacle is completed with the uncountable boats and yachts from any place of the world, mooring at the port.

In 2007, a National Geographic Traveler panel of 522 experts rated Hydra the highest of any Greek island (11th out of 111 islands worldwide) as a unique destination preserving its "integrity of place"

Boy on a Dolphin is a 1957 20th Century Fox romantic film set in Greece and shot in DeLuxe Color and CinemaScope. It was directed by Jean Negulesco and produced by Samuel G. Engel from a screenplay by Ivan Moffat and Dwight Taylor, based on the novel of the same name by David Divine. The film was Sophia Loren's English-language debut. She starred opposite Alan Ladd and Clifton Webb, with Alexis Minotis and Laurence Naismith in support.  It was the first Hollywood movie shot in Greece.

Hydra eventually did join the cause of independence, and Hydra's contribution of some 150 ships, plus supplies, to fight against the Turks played a critical role. The Greek admiral Andreas Miaoulis, himself a settler on Hydra, used Hydriot fire ships to inflict heavy losses on the Ottoman fleet. Eventually the fleet of Hydra - along with those of the other two naval islands of Psara and Spetses - were able to wrest control of the eastern Aegean Sea from the Ottoman Empire.

With the end of the revolution and the creation of the Greek state, the island gradually lost its maritime position in the Eastern Mediterranean, igniting an economic crisis that led to a period of hardship and unemployment. The main reason was that with the creation of the Greek state, Hydra's fleet lost the privileges that the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca and the use of the Russian flag had given it. Another reason was that the traditional families who owned the majority of the fleet failed to foresee the benefits of participating in the steam ship revolution, which significantly cut shipping operational costs through reduced crew and independence of the winds, putting them at a disadvantage vis-á-vis the new shipping companies of Piraeus, Patras, and Syros. A third reason was that the new conditions made illegal activities such as piracy impossible. Once again, many inhabitants abandoned Hydra, leaving behind their large mansions and beautiful residences, which fell into ruin. The mainstay of the island's economy became fishing for sponge. This brought prosperity again until 1932, when Egypt forbade fishing along its coast. By World War II, the Hydriots were again leaving the island; many of them went abroad.

POROS IS AN OPEN MUSEUM

one day cruise from athens to 3 islands

Poros  is a small Greek island-pair in the southern part of the Saronic Gulf, about 58 km (36 mi) (31 nautical miles) south from Piraeus and separated from the Peloponnese by a 200 m (656 ft) wide sea channel, with the town of Galatas on the mainland across the strait. Its surface area is about 31 square kilometres  and it has 3,780 inhabitants. The ancient name of Poros was Pogon. Like other ports in the Saronic Golf, it is a popular weekend destination for Athenian travelers.

Poros is an island with rich vegetation. Much of the northern and far eastern/western sides of the island are bushy, whereas large areas of old pine forest are found in the south and center of the island. It has a good road network and adequate tourist infrastructure, which makes it a popular resort for short holidays.

During the Roman period (86 BC to 395 AD) Poros was part of the Roman Empire along with Trizina, to which it was a tributary. In Byzantine times, Poros and other islands were often raided by the pirates that dominated the Aegean Sea.

In 1484 the Venetians occupied Poros and used it as a strategic port in their sea battles with the Ottomans. Poros was the most powerful city of the wider area, also governing Methana Island, Epidaurus, Damalas (Trizina), Fanari and Valario.

During that time, the island had about 15,000 inhabitants, making it one of the largest cities in Greece. Venetian rule ended in 1715.

The Ottoman Period began in 1715, much later in Poros than in the rest of Greece. Shipping and commerce were the inhabitants’ main activities, but Poros’ fleet wasn’t as famous as Hydra’s or Spetses’ fleet, due to the fact that it did not participate in many sea battles. Poros had an important role during the Greek Revolution in 1821, due to its strategic position. The Greek revolutionary leaders, often met in Poros to discuss and plan their future actions. The first Greek naval base was established in Poros in 1828 and remained there until 1878. In September 1828, the ambassadors of England, France and Russia met in Poros with Ioannis Kapodistrias in order to determine the borders of the future Greek state, which was established two years later, in 1830.

one day cruise from athens to 3 islands

Henry Miller (1891–1980) American writer wrote about Poros in "The Colossus of Maroussi", considered his best book writes about Poros ..."I don't know which affected me more deeply-the story of the lemon groves just opposite us or the sight of Poros itself when suddenly I realized we were sailing through the streets. If there is one dream which I like above all others it is that of sailing on land. Coming into Poros gives the illusion of the deep dream. Suddenly the land converges on all sides and the boat is squeezed into a narrow strait from which there is no egress.

one day cruise from athens to 3 islands

The men and women of Poros are hanging out of the windows just above your head. You pull in right under their frosty nostrils, as though for a shave and a haircut en route. The loungers on the quay are walking with the same speed as the boat. They can walk faster than the boat if they choose to quicken their pace."

AEGINA IS AN OPEN MUSEUM

The island of Aegina is one of the most popular tourist destinations as it is the closest island to Athens (only 16.5 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus).

According to the myth, the island took its name from a nymph, daughter of the river god Asopos, whom Zeus fell in love with and took with him to the island! From 11/1/1827 until 3/10/1829 Aegina town was the temporary capital of the newly founded Greek state. It was during that period when Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias had impressive neoclassical mansions built to house his headquarters that today are important tourist attractions.

Markellos Tower (built by Markellos, a 1821 War of Independence hero and later Governor of the island, which now houses the Kapodistrias Spiritual Center), Kapodistrias Orphanage (the first public building during Kapodistrias’ administration) and Aegina Cathedral (the first Cathedral of the Modern Greek State, it also housed Kapodistria’s Government and the first parliament of the modern Greek State).

The Markellos Tower today

Today the Tower of Markellos belongs to the municipality of Aegina and houses the Kapodistrian Cultural Center of the Municipality and the Center for Social Reflection “Spiros Alexiou”. On the ground floor occasional exhibitions take place and cultural events during which it is open to the public.

The Sanctuary of Apollo Delfinios, Kolóna

Located at a short distance from the harbour, the area took its name from a standing column (of Doric type), the only one remaining from a 6th Century BC temple. Mount Kolonas was a religious centre of the ancient town. Archaeological research has revealed the presence of more than ten historical buildings dating from the most recent Neolithic era (5th millennium BC) to the Mycenaean period (1600- 1200 BC). In front of the archaeological site lies a museum bearing the same name.

one day cruise from athens to 3 islands

The Temple of Aphaia Athena

Even though the island small, it boasts a great number of sights and natural beauties, highlight of which is the famous Aphea Temple.

Close to Agia Marina lies the 500 BC Doric Temple of Aphaia Athena, the most important monument on the island. The temple was founded there and it formed an equilateral triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, the so-called “holy triangle” of antiquity. The most impressive part of the temple is its wonderful sculpted pediments, a large part of which is exhibited at the Glyptothek of Munich. Excavation findings are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Aegina.

Best cruise destinations for every type of traveler

Choosing where to cruise is one half of a successful vacation: The right ship plus a carefully selected destination that matches your overall interests typically equals an enjoyable cruise experience.

So, what are the best cruise destinations for every type of traveler?

That depends. With several dozen destination options around the globe to choose from — everything from popular locales you can cruise to from U.S. ports to far-flung regions known to top many bucket lists — it can take a bit of research to find your perfect match.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

That’s why we’re here. We’ve been around the block (and around the world) when it comes to cruises. We’ve explored the most captivating cities, waded into the surf on world-class beaches, hiked unspoiled landscapes and gazed upon treasured landmarks. So before you book your next cruise, have a look at our picks for the best cruise destinations for every type of traveler.

Best cruise destination for beach lovers: The Caribbean

When it comes to optimal sun, sand and surf, it’s tough to beat the Caribbean. It also helps that every major cruise line offers multiple itineraries in the region, most from November to March but quite a few year-round. You can cruise to the Caribbean from more than 10 U.S. cities — everywhere from New York to Galveston, Texas — although the majority of Caribbean cruises sail from Florida ports: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Tampa.

Which Caribbean islands have the best beaches? It’s impossible to choose since every island is fringed by talcum-soft sand and warm turquoise water and is home to lively beach bars offering music and tropical cocktails that will make your day in the sun all the more fun.

Cruises here are offered in three regions. Eastern Caribbean cruises visit ports including St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands. The Western Caribbean itineraries feature calls on Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Roatan, Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. The Southern Caribbean voyages sail to islands such as St. Lucia, Barbados, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Many cruise lines also call on Nassau in the Bahamas and their own Bahamian private islands , where beach days are sublime. Some longer itineraries (10 nights or more) also combine Eastern and Southern ports of call with less-visited islands such as St. Kitts and Antigua.

Best cruise destination for history buffs: The Eastern Mediterranean

The Eastern Mediterranean, where it meets the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas, is home to century-spanning sites sure to tempt any history buff. Cruises in this region typically call on Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Italy, while some also visit Israel, Jordan and Cyprus. More than any other region, the Eastern Mediterranean offers cruisers the chance to step back in time simply by stepping off their ship.

For example, cruises often begin in Istanbul, home to the 6th-century Hagia Sophia and the elaborate Blue Mosque, constructed between 1609 and 1616. Ports of call also in Turkey may include Kusadasi for the nearby Roman city of Ephesus and its wondrous Library of Celsus. In Greece, medieval and Venetian architecture are thoughtfully preserved in the islands of Rhodes and Corfu, respectively. Your cruise might end in Athens, site of the 2,500-year-old Parthenon and its antiquities.

Or you can cruise from Venice, with its splendid 11th-century Basilica of San Marco and palazzo-lined canals, across the Adriatic to the coast of Croatia. These sailings typically call on Split (home to Diocletian’s Palace, which dates to the 4 th century) and Dubrovnik (with its postcard-perfect 13th-century walled Old Town), as well as the island nation of Malta (realm of the Knights of St. John).

If Israel and Jordan are must-visits, look for a cruise with Holy Lands in its title. These sailings often depart from Athens and also call on several Greek islands and Cyprus.

Best cruise destination for outdoor adventurers: Alaska

The 49 th State is a vast 665,400-square-mile wilderness. It offers an incredible 46,600 miles of coastline (longer than the shorelines of all the lower 48 states combined) and a unique and plentiful mix of wildlife. An Alaska cruise offers true outdoor adventure.

In port, choose from hiking amid boreal forests to sea kayaking among seals and sea otters. You can fish for salmon (and have it shipped home), zipline above a landscape inhabited by black bears and gaze down at massive glaciers from a seaplane or helicopter (and even land atop one).

Have a less-adventurous travel companion? They can pan for gold, ride a vintage train and dog-sled (and afterward cuddle adorable husky pups).

The Pacific Northwest port cities of Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia are the gateways for the majority of Alaska cruises. Inside Passage itineraries are the most popular and cruise lines offer these sailings from May through September .

On a round-trip cruise, you’ll call on Juneau, Alaska’s remote capital that’s reachable solely by sea or air and offers access to Mendenhall Glacier. Other top ports are Ketchikan, known for wet-suit snorkeling and floatplane flightseeing; Skagway, where you can combine an invigorating hike and a relaxing river float trip; and Icy Strait Point, a top spot for sea kayaking and whale watching.

A highlight for many passengers is scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park . This 3.3-million-acre national park is home to more than 1,000 glaciers, including the accessible and photogenic Margerie Glacier, which extends 21 miles from the mountains to the bay. Have your camera ready to capture the action as huge chunks of Windex-blue ice calve off of its 250-foot-high face with a thunderous crack and crash into the frigid waters below.

Best cruise destination for honeymooners: French Polynesia

Lagoons that shimmer in a mosaic of the purest blues imaginable, palm-fringed islets comprised solely of pristine white sand, and Polynesian culture steeped in heart-pounding song and dance make a cruise through the islands of French Polynesia ideal for honeymooners. Tahiti and the other Society Islands — Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Huahine and Taha’a — offer a setting for celebratory romance that’s scenic and sensual.

Most cruises through the Societies are seven or 10 nights, with mornings spent exploring an island’s lush landscape by 4×4, visiting vanilla or black pearl farms or venturing into the lagoon for snorkeling excursions or shark and stingray feedings. In the afternoon, laze by your ship’s pool or give stand-up paddleboarding a try. Diving here is also superb, so couples who are certified can experience the thrill of underwater life beyond the lagoon.

On a cultural level, couples cruising through the islands of Tahiti can try new foods such as breadfruit and poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut and lime juice), melt into a state of blissful relaxation with traditional taurumi massage, and experience the soul-stirring drumbeats of Polynesian dance. Be sure to pluck a plumeria blossom and place it behind your left ear — to signify that your heart is spoken for.

Best cruise destination for city explorers: The Baltic

The sophisticated capitals of Scandinavia — Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki — plus other coastal cities such as Tallinn, Estonia and Gdansk, Poland, are each compelling in their own right. So, imagine the rush of urban euphoria you’ll feel while exploring all of them on a Baltic (or Northern Europe) cruise from May through September.

While itineraries range from seven to 14 nights and the ports visited vary by cruise line, most sailings call on Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn. The Danish capital is a fascinating blend of imperial palaces, photogenic landmarks (including the vibrant waterfront of Nyhavn and the Victorian-era Tivoli Gardens) and modern culinary and design innovations.

Equally captivating is Stockholm, where a stroll through Old Town (Gamla Stan) will take you back to medieval times. A visit to the one-of-a-kind Vasa Museum offers a fascinating glimpse at a doomed 17th-century wooden warship, and a few hours in the ABBA Museum will have you humming the band’s hits for hours afterward.

Then there’s Helsinki. Expect to be charmed by this quirky city with its unpronounceable street names, elegant Esplanade and cache of unique churches (among them the red-brick Uspenski Cathedral and the Temppeliaukion Church, aka the Church of the Rock). And Tallinn? The city’s remarkably intact medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site encircled by red-capped storybook-style towers. Easily explored on foot, it’s home to architectural landmarks that include Gothic-spired churches, Hanseatic merchant houses and a Pseudo-Russian cathedral.

Best cruise destination for the culturally curious: Japan

A single-country cruise itinerary gives you a chance to enjoy a deeper dive into local culture. One of the most popular destinations for this type of immersive experience is Japan. As an island nation, it has a wealth of ports that can be explored on 12- to 14-night circle-island sailings offered by both large-ship and small-luxury cruise lines.

From the bright lights and youthful energy of modern Tokyo, an itinerary will visit 10 or so Japanese cities. Your ship will also call on Busan, South Korea as required by maritime regulations.

Kobe is your access point for Kyoto, with its temples and gardens, while Shimizu is your gateway to scenic Mt. Fuji. Visit the moving Peace Memorial Park honoring the tragedy of WWII in Hiroshima and historic Hirosaki Castle in Aomori. In Kanazawa, explore the well-preserved samurai and geisha districts. Don’t miss Sakaiminato, famous for its seafood and the Izumo-taisha Grand Shrine.

Along with enjoying Japan’s top sights on guided excursions, you’ll also have a chance to experience the country’s traditional music and dance, visit museums filled with centuries of art and soak in thermal hot springs. Be sure to sample culinary specialties, from udon noodles and sake to elaborate kaiseki multi-course feasts. Even better — you can do it all while only having to unpack once.

Best cruise destination for nature lovers: Panama Canal & Central America

Yes, the Panama Canal is manmade, but it cuts across 82 miles of Central American jungle on the isthmus of Panama to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A transit of the circa-1914 original or the 2016 extension takes a single day. The remainder of the cruise will be spent calling on ports in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia (historic coastal Cartagena), Mexico and the Caribbean.

That means there’s plenty of nature to appreciate. Some ships will spend a day in Colon, Panama, which offers access to Chagres National Park and the Gamboa Rainforest Preserve. Both are home to indigenous species such as toucans, coatimundis and monkeys.

During a visit to Puntarenas, Costa Rica, the volcanic landscape and surrounding rainforest and cloud forest offer opportunities for hiking, kayaking and spotting native species such as howler monkeys, sloths and crocodiles. Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala is known for its coffee plantations and access to the historic city of Antigua. The region also offers the chance to hike the Pacaya Volcano or visit the ancient Mayan site of Iximche.

In the Caribbean, some Panama Canal itineraries call on one of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire or Curacao) while others visit Grand Cayman, where stellar snorkeling and diving (and interaction with the playful residents of Stingray City) are top activities. On Mexico’s Pacific Coast, ports might include Huatulco, offering access to an iguana sanctuary and ecological park, or Puerto Vallarta, where you can enjoy a snorkel trip to Los Arcos de Mismaloya.

Best cruise destination for food and wine aficionados: Western Mediterranean

Italy, France and Spain are all celebrated for their distinctive cuisines and award-winning wines, which makes a Western Mediterranean itinerary perfect for culinary enthusiasts.

The fact that the region’s top cruise ports are the birthplaces of foodie favorites such as paella, pizza, spaghetti alla carbonara and moules-frites makes a cruise here a delicious indulgence. You can eat your fill of local cuisine in places such as Barcelona and Valencia in Spain, Marseille and Saint-Tropez in France, and Livorno (for Florence and Pisa), Rome and Naples in Italy.

Add in the Western Med’s top island ports, and it’s impossible to cruise here without enjoying some of the world’s most memorable foods and flavors. Olives and olive oil are an art form on the Spanish island of Mallorca, while wild boar is a rustic favorite on the French island of Corsica. The Italian island of Sardinia is known for its strong Cannonau red wine, and Sicily is the birthplace of the famous cannoli.

Some cruise lines are especially attuned to offering their guests local culinary experiences. These take the form of shore excursions (cooking classes, market visits and farm and winery tours) and onboard dinner menus that highlight regional specialties and local wines. FYI: Cruise ships also have fully equipped fitness centers where you can work off all the extra calories you’ll consume.

Best cruise destination for bucket-listers: Antarctica

When travelers dusted off their bucket list post-pandemic one of the places they most wanted to visit was Antarctica. The seventh continent, a place that belongs to no single nation but hosts research stations from almost 30, has fascinated adventurers for decades. But the swift expansion of luxury expedition cruising over the past five to seven years has made this frozen polar frontier the “It” destination of the 2020s.

What’s the experience like? On an expedition cruise, generally roundtrip from Ushuaia, Argentina, you’ll first have to cross the Drake Passage, a notoriously rough and windy body of water. Safely on the other side, you’ll arrive at landing points in the South Shetland Islands along the Antarctic Peninsula.

Whether viewing regiments of gleaming icebergs from your ship’s deck or photographing parades of waddling penguins against a surreal landscape of ice while ashore, the experience is like no other. Some expedition itineraries also venture farther south to the continent while longer sailings call on South Georgia Island and/or the Falklands.

Antarctica requires two things of visitors. The first is a healthy budget. Expedition cruises generally start at around $12,000 per person, although some major cruise lines offer scenic cruising in Antarctica — with no landings — for under $3,000 per person. The second is a moderate fitness level to be able to venture ashore in Zodiacs and explore the rugged landscape.

The cruise season spans just five months, from mid-November to March, and you’ll want to book far in advance so you have time to prepare.

Best cruise destination for travelers without a passport: Hawaii

If you’re passport-less or have let yours expire, you can still enjoy a tropical island cruise that’s exotic and yet reassuringly familiar. We’re talking Hawaii, where a seven-night inter-island itinerary visiting four islands doesn’t require that you have a passport. These itineraries are offered year-round aboard Norwegian Cruise Line ’s Pride of America.

Since you’ll be cruising in U.S. territory, you don’t have to worry should you need to leave the cruise early and fly back to the states because of illness or a family emergency. This can be a concern for passengers on round-trip, closed-loop sailings from Florida to the Caribbean or Bahamas who board only with a driver’s license and birth certificate.

Beyond the practical, a Hawaii cruise that begins and ends in Oahu and spends two days on each of the other main islands — Maui, Kauai and the Island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island) — offers plenty of time to enjoy the sights and even experience a cultural evening activity, such as a sunset luau. You’ll also avoid all the inter-island flights required for hotel stays.

Highlights of a Hawaii itinerary include a pre- or post-cruise visit to the historic sites of Pearl Harbor and perhaps even an overnight stay in Waikiki. How to Observe the Northern Lights This Weekend

The Space Weather Prediction Center said solar activity would be high again on Saturday.

Northern Lights Glow in the Sky Amid Solar Storm

Powerful solar flare activity made the aurora borealis visible unusually far south..

[Laughing] Holy moly. I know. This — I thought it would just be over on the horizon a little — Behind us, too. Yeah. A little green on the horizon. Nothing like this. This is — This is like, ‘Oh, my god.’ Everywhere.

Keep an eye on the skies on Saturday night for what could be another dazzling display of nature — or not, depending on your location and weather conditions.

An unusual amount of solar flare activity means that the aurora borealis, or the northern lights, could continue to appear over the weekend.

The solar storm was a level 5 on Friday, which gave some star gazers a clear view of streaks of green, purple and red that arced across the skies. Those conditions are expected to continue, Mike Bettwy, the operations chief of the Space Weather Prediction Center, said on Saturday.

“It should be fairly similar to what we saw last night, maybe not as widespread but fairly close,” Mr. Bettwy said.

“Depending on how everything evolves,” he added, “tomorrow night might actually be better than tonight” for views of the aurora.

In areas with clear skies, the display on Sunday could be similar to what people witnessed on Friday.

If you’re in a place with a lot of bright lights — like a city — it’s going to be hard to see anything. And then there are other complications, like the weather.

Two weather systems on Saturday night could impair viewing of the solar display, said Bryan Jackson, a forecaster at the Weather Prediction Center.

The Northeast is likely to be overcast because of a cloud system that could stretch from the Midwest and center over Pennsylvania. Cloud coverage might also extend as far as Maine, with the potential to clear around New Hampshire.

“This event is strong enough that the Northeast United States pretty much universally has a good shot at seeing it,” Mr. Bettwy said. “It’s just a matter of making sure that the cloud cover is absent.”

A second storm system, which was predicted to produce a fair amount of rain and cloud coverage, is possible over the Southwest.

Mr. Jackson said Michigan was likely to have clear skies between waves of rain. Other regions of the country could have clear views, too.

“In Seattle, it was pretty clear last night and it looks to be pretty clear again,” Mr. Jackson said on Saturday. “Portions of the southern Rockies, portions of the southern Plains are not overcast, but not completely clear either.”

The lights were particularly brilliant over England on Friday, and images of the solar show awed onlookers in parts of Maine and Massachusetts.

A tip: If you are in a clear area, even south of where the aurora is forecast, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone.

The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Why is this happening?

A severe solar storm is brewing.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center on Friday issued a rare warning after a solar outburst reached Earth.

As nuclear reactions occur on the sun, it routinely expels material from its surface.

Officials said that the solar activity could potentially cause electrical outages or interfere with navigation and communication systems.

When is this happening?

The expelled material from the sun could reach Earth’s atmosphere by Friday afternoon or evening, officials said.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen, certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday.

What’s flaring up?

The Space Weather Prediction Center said on Friday night that we were experiencing an extreme solar storm, a level 5 , up from a level 4 earlier in the day .

The last extreme event happened in October 2003 and resulted in power failures in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, the center said.

The current storm is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Katrina Miller , Emmett Lindner and Judson Jones contributed reporting.
