TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States. Contact the airline for questions regarding specific ID requirements for travelers under 18.

Forgot Your ID?

In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name, current address, and other personal information to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You will be subject to additional screening, to include a patdown and screening of carry-on property.

You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if your identity cannot be confirmed, you choose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.

TSA recommends that you arrive at least two hours in advance of your flight time.

If your identity cannot be verified, you will not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint.

Parliamentary perks: What do MPs really get? It’s not just housing allowance, travel and superannuation

By Susan Edmunds of RNZ

Another day, another Member of Parliament in the news for their expense claims.

First it was Prime Minister Christopher Luxon claiming $52,000 a year for the use of his Wellington home instead of shifting in to Premier House . (He later said he would no longer claim it .)

Then more recently, Ōtaki MP Tim Costley was revealed to be claiming an allowance of $36,000 for a Wellington apartment he owns.

Then Masterton -based MP Kieran McAnulty made headlines for claiming the same allowance to rent a Lower Hutt property from his wife.

So how do the allowances work, and what are some of the other perks MPs get?

Prime Minister’s housing allowance

The Prime Minister is entitled to the use of Premier House, in Wellington.

As Luxon demonstrated, those who do not live in Wellington and do not choose to live in Premier House can claim up to $52,000 in a “continuous accommodation payment” each year.

If the PM does not take that allowance, he can claim reimbursement of “actual and reasonable” expenses in a hotel in Wellington.

That can be up to $350 a night or $52,000 a year. (It may be important to note that this does not include payment for meals, laundry, minibars or parking.)

The Speaker, Deputy Speaker and ministers can also be allocated an official residence if they do not live in Wellington already, or receive the $52,000 payment.

MPs’ housing allowance

MPs can claim up to $36,400 a year in continuous accommodation payments if they are normally based outside Wellington, or up to $260 a night if they stay in commercial premises – or $70 a night elsewhere.

If they share with other people, the maximum continuous accommodation payment is reduced – when living with one other person, they can receive 70 per cent, with two it is 60 per cent and with three, 55 per cent.

Wellington accommodation expense payments can be increased in special circumstances that stop the MPs travelling as they normally would.

Accommodation and travel

Accommodation is paid for members who are travelling outside Wellington for work. Ministers, the Speaker and the leader of the Opposition can claim up to $425 per night for accommodation in Queenstown or $350 outside Queenstown.

For other members of Parliament, accommodation can be up to $290 a night in Queenstown or $260 outside Queenstown.

“MPs are only able to use travel for ‘parliamentary purposes’ and there is a specific separate determination that the authority updates every three years which allows strictly controlled and limited travel for spouses to accompany MPs, travelling within New Zealand for parliamentary purposes, to attempt to instal some family friendliness into their existence,” Remuneration Authority chair Geoff Summers said.

Travel overseas by MPs can be funded by leadership funds or a rebate, but this travel has to be approved by the Speaker and their party leader or whip.

The leader of the Opposition can use $150,000 from the travel appropriation over a term of Parliament.

Partners and family members

A member of Parliament can claim the expense of an evening meal up to a maximum of $80 for their spouse or partner if it was necessary or appropriate for the spouse to be there, they had to be away overnight and a meal was not provided.

As Summers said, partners and children have access to travel services too.

Members’ partners are limited to taking up to 20 one-way trips in a year. Partners of a minister, Speaker, Deputy Speaker or the leader of the Opposition may take up to 30. There is no cap for the Prime Minister’s partner or children aged under 18.

The Prime Minister’s partner can make use of a chauffeur-driven car if they are fulfilling their role. For parliamentary purposes, partners of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, ministers, leader of the Opposition and the leader of a party with 25 or more members in Parliament can also make use of cars.

Partners can also claim back the costs of using their car to drop off an MP at an event, using their car for parliamentary or ministerial business, or if they are joining the MP at a destination.

not just travel limited

End of employment

When an MP does not stand for election or is not re-elected at the next election, they can receive three months’ salary.

Former Prime Ministers who were in the job for more than two years receive an ongoing annuity of $12,000 for each complete year in office up to a maximum $60,000 at present.

They also have travel entitlements: former Prime Ministers can be paid for travel on planes, trains, ferries, non-urban buses and taxis if they are doing work related to their former role, or they can use chauffeur-driven cars. Former PMs can also have use of a self-drive car and the maintenance and fuel costs associated with that.

It used to be the case that MPs who joined Parliament before 1999 could retire with generous travel discounts of up to 90 per cent of the cost of a business class flight to London a year.

Summers said that was no longer the case.

“I doubt that there are any MPs who still have those rights – the changes were applied to new members thereby ‘grandparenting’ existing people who already had them. I have been here now for over eight years and all those perks had long gone before I got here.”

Security systems

MPs can claim for the cost of installing a security system at their home, up to a maximum of $4500.

Superannuation subsidy

MPs have access to a superannuation subsidy up to two and a half-times their contribution to a maximum 20 per cent of salary.

A backbencher earning $168,600 contributing 3 per cent of their salary would get a contribution of $12,645.

Basic allowance

MPs also receive a basic allowance each year to cover the cost of things like donations, raffle tickets, flowers and meals. This used to also include a direction that only the PM could use it for clothes and grooming.

For the Prime Minister this is $22,606, for the Speaker, $21,136, and for every other Member of Parliament it is $16,980.

The Differences Between A Gentleman in Moscow the Book and the TV Series

Amor Towles's hit novel has been adapted for a gorgeous series starring Ewan McGregor. Are they the same?

In the 1932 all-star film Grand Hotel, a sage observer of the human condition intones “What do you do in the Grand Hotel? Eat. Sleep. Loaf around. Flirt a little, dance a little. A hundred doors leading to one hall…And when you leave, someone occupies your room…that's the end.”

ewan mcgregor as count rostov in a gentleman in moscow episode 5, streaming on paramount 2024 photo credit ben blackallparamount with showtime

Count Rostov was first introduced to audiences in Amor Towles’ 2016 boffo bestseller A Gentleman in Moscow . Now, it’s been adapted into a Showtime limited series and the eponym is played with old-world panache, charm, and sparkle by a mustachioed Ewan McGregor .

In both iterations of A Gentleman in Moscow , you’ll find much to marvel at. But, it’s not all joy. There is death, contemplation of suicide, famine, the onset of war and other very heavy topics especially given the news today. But coupled with that, and embodied by the singular Count Rostov, is a commitment to finding beauty in the commonplace. That even amidst sadness and privation, there is a persistent glimmer of possibility to cling to. Start by reading and watching the life of Count Rostov unfold. By the time you’re done, you’ll want to, as he does, reach for Tolstoy.

There are, of course, differences between the book and the limited series—and some are of greater import than others. Here are the most important.

Adapt or Die Ben Blackall/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Anna Urbanova in A Gentleman in Moscow.

Both the novel and the series, airing now, begin with Count Rostov as he is charged by a Bolshevik tribunal with house arrest. Fortunately for him, the luxurious Hotel Metropol is home. Unfortunately, the suite he has long been accustomed to is swapped for a very small room, many stories up, at the top of the hotel. Over the course of eight episodes, and several decades, we watch as his life changes inexorably, with the introduction of surprise, surveillance, comedy, catastrophe, and, most unexpectedly, love.

The fidelity to the novel, unspooled over each episode, is really quite something. As you might expect, that fidelity is best exhibited by the attention paid to the hotel. I’m not the only one who felt that way. I had a chance to ask Amor Towles, who is also an executive producer on the series, about his thoughts.

“When I visited the set in Manchester, England for the first time last March, I was a little anxious," he says. "I was met in the parking lot by Sam [Miller, a director and executive producer], Ben [Vanstone, writer] and the production designer, Victor Molero, who wanted to personally introduce me to the set. Entering the vast sound stage… we turned a corner and found ourselves before the façade of the Metropol. We passed through the revolving doors. And looking around the beautifully realized lobby, my first thought was: Everything is going to be just fine. ”

Who’s That in the Painting? Ben Blackall/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME A view of Count Rostov’s room in the Hotel Metropol, where a portrait of his sister—who plays a larger role in the novel—is on display.

In the book, Rostov carries regret over the death of his sister, which occurred while he was exiled from Russia after defending her honor in a duel. She, and her legacy, are also featured far more prominently within the pages. There are toasts on the anniversary of her death, frequent reminiscences and an unshakeable grip of guilt around Rostov’s heart. In the show, she is the stuff of indeterminate flashbacks and the subject of a painting which resides in Rostov’s room. "To have one’s book taken up by a large and talented team who share the aim of faithfully translating your story to a visual medium, that’s a whole different level of having a life beyond the binding," Towles says. "Needless to say, it was an exciting development."

A Color-Conscious Cast Ben Blackall/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME Lyes Salem as Andrey with Ewan McGregor in A Gentleman in Moscow.

The Metropol is peopled with a variety of characters who come in and out of Rostov’s life as time passes. In the series, they are brought to vivid life by a cast that reflects the world we live in more than the one of period Russia. This is most evident in three of the characters who enrich Count Rostov’s life at the Metropol: Fehinti Balogun who plays Rostov’s longtime friend Mishka, Marina as played by Leah Harvey and Andrey, touchingly brought to life by Lyès Salem.

Wait, He Still Has a Mustache? Ben Blackall/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME One different between A Gentleman in Moscow the book and its small-screen adaptation? The fate of the title character’s impressive mustache.

Early on in the book, Rostov is accosted in the barber shop and ends up having to cut his mustache as a result. Later, after being seated in the hotel restaurant, a young girl, Nina, the precocious daughter of a diplomat, approaches him and inquires after it. Nina’s acute perception, curiosity and possession of a skeleton key which opens any room in the Metropol bond the two together from that day forward. In the series, he has the whiskers when he meets Nina—but not for too long.

The Truth About Nina Ben Blackall/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME Ewan McGregor as Count Rostov and Alexa Goodall as Nina in A Gentleman in Moscow, streaming now on Showtime and Paramount+.

A gentleman in moscow.

A Gentleman in Moscow

The young girl with the skeleton key grows from a desire to share mischief to an intense love and trust for Rostov, even as she becomes increasingly pro-Stalin, which is definitely at odds with Rostov. In both the book and the series, Nina leaves her young daughter, Sofia, at the Metropol in order to follow her husband to Siberia, where he is sentenced to a labor camp. Like her mother before her, Sofia and the count became inseparable. Unlike the book, however, we find out explicitly what happened to Nina when we see her body in a mass grave. "Most of the texture of A Gentleman in Moscow springs from the marriage of my imagination with this 30-year interest in Russian culture," Towles says. "In fact, when I began writing the book, I had only been in Russia for a total of 10 days and had never spent the night in the Metropol Hotel. But once I finished the first draft, I flew to Russia and moved into the Metropol where I began the process of revision."

Whose Voice is That? Ben Blackall/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME Daniel Cerqueira as Vasily with Ewan McGregor in A Gentleman in Moscow, the new series based on Amor Towles’s novel.

The book is narrated by an omniscient narrator and peppered throughout with poems and transcripts. The show, however, is narrated by a woman’s voice. It isn’t until the tragic conclusion of the fifth episode that you find out it is a grown-up Sofia who is speaking.

Not just public transport

Wow, wow, wow!!! Stunningly beautiful as well as operating a fantastic and very cheap service. Sure, use it to get around. But a lot of the metro stations are worth visiting as an attraction in their own right. Puts London to shame!

Never thought to find that there was this kind of art in an underground railway station - not just in one but in all. All the stations had a particular theme. No graffiti art like other cities that we had visited. Even the descent into the stations was artistic. Wonderful to the eye altough the speed of the trainsarrivals and departures left one gasping! Managed to navigate our trip to our hotel on our own without incident without our guide!

Managed to navigate from rishkaya station near holiday inn suschevsky to red square. Was also nervous but bought an 11 sector pass ticket. Carrying a copy of the metro map is useful if you do not have an app and planning where you need to transfer. When trying to work out which platform direction is required look at the map to see the final destination. I found in most cases I could recognise the first letter of the final destination On the line so I could choose the right platform. From there counted the stops. Most challenging is transferring between lines but have a go and found it just took a little mo walking and I found the right place. A great experience. With red square there are many exits but at least at that station there are maps with with English and English translations on street signs when you get out.

It is a wonderful experience to ride the Moscow Metro. Each station is unique piece of art, clean and spacious. The only drawback is that it is very easy to get lost in stations' intersections.

Had an occasion to travel by famous Moscow Metro. An unforgettable experience. It is important that you know Russian Language or have someone with you who knows the same, otherwise it is difficult to navigate. Trains are clean though old. Do give it a try.

Like most of the other reviewer state: Just take the metro when in Moscow. Get a map or download an app to understand/recognize the Cyrillic name. Once in a while just get off a metro and enjoy the beautiful stations...

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

This Major U.S. Airport Just Opened a Plane-spotting Area Complete with a Playground and Food Trucks — Airline Ticket Not Required

The 600,000-square-foot overlook area is free and open to the public.

There’s a new way to spot planes without having to go through security in North Carolina thanks to a 600,000-square-foot overlook area that just opened.

The lookout deck, which opened less than two miles from the Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), is free and open to the public, offering views over the airfield, skyline, and terminal, according to the airport . And it features some really cool aircraft-themed amenities to excite the whole family.

“The Airport knows how important the Overlook is to the local community and we worked diligently to create a place that people of all ages will enjoy,” CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine said in a statement. “This space showcases many displays and features that will educate, inspire and create lasting memories.”

In addition to plane spotting, the deck features an airport-themed playground complete with a mini air traffic control tower with a slide and a plane-shaped climbing structure, along with a displayed retired U.S. military fighter jet and “informative exhibits” detailing aviation history in the Carolinas, including the types of planes that use the airport, the science behind a Boeing 747 aircraft, and how runways are built and named. And if plane spotters get hungry, there’s a food truck area and covered picnic tables.

On a more somber note, the site features a memorial to USAir Flight 1016, which crashed into a private home while trying to land at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in 1994, resulting in the deaths of 37 passengers, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

This permanent lookout replaces a temporary one that was put in place after the last overlook closed in 2022 due to airport construction.

The new overlook also features accessible parking, bicycle racks, restrooms with baby changing stations, and pet relief areas so the whole family can enjoy.

This isn’t the only new thing coming to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport this year: the airport will also get its first Delta Sky Club lounge by the end of 2024.

Japan Likes Tourists, Just Not This Many

The country has politely handled travelers for years, but as international visitors spill into previously untouristed spots, some residents are frustrated.

Three people sit cross-legged on the ground. One covers his mouth, one his eyes, one his ears. Red temple structures and a crowd of people are seen in the background.

By Yan Zhuang

The writer spent several days elbowing through crowds in Kyoto and Fuji City, Japan.

On two recent occasions, a foreign tourist walked into Shoji Matsumoto’s barbershop, through a front door that grates loudly when opened more than halfway, wanting a haircut.

One was Italian, the other British. Mr. Matsumoto, who is 75 and speaks neither of their languages, didn’t know what to tell them. He picked up his scissors and began to cut, hoping that his decades of experience would carry him through the stilted encounters.

Tourists, propelled in part by a weak yen that makes their money go further in Japan, have been pouring into the country ever since it eased its coronavirus-related entry restrictions in 2022. Some officials, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, have raised concerns about overtourism. In March, there were more than three million international arrivals, a monthly record, and a more than 10 percent jump compared with March 2019.

Nearly two thirds of international visitors tend to be from South Korea, Taiwan and China. Last year, spending from foreign tourists made up about 9 percent of Japan’s gross domestic product.

Popular sites in cities like Kyoto, Japan’s ancient royal capital, feel increasingly unmanageable. Visitors are spilling into previously untouristed places, like small towns near Mount Fuji or the commercial district of Kyoto where Mr. Matsumoto cuts hair.

“Before, it was normal to see tourists in certain spots,” Mr. Matsumoto said from a low chair in his barbershop on a recent Saturday. “But now, they’re spreading out to random and unexpected places.”

That influx is testing the patience of a generally polite society.

In Kyoto and other heavily visited cities, some residents grumble about being priced out of hotel rooms or crowded out of buses and restaurants. Others say that tourists sometimes disrespect local customs by, say, chasing after geishas to photograph them or eating while walking, a behavior that is considered rude in Japan.

One day last month, it took Hiroshi Ban six hours — twice as long as usual — to visit Kyoto’s Heian Jingu shrine. Mr. Ban, 65, attributed the delay partly to tourists who hold up buses by counting out coins for the fare.

“Every day feels like a carnival here,” said Mr. Ban, an event organizer. “We can’t enjoy our daily lives in peace.”

Even those who directly benefit from tourism revenue worry that it might be unsustainable.

Hisashi Kobayashi, a taxi driver in Kyoto, said business was so good that taking a day off felt like passing up easy money. But many tourism-related industries were struggling to keep up with demand as they recovered from pandemic-era labor shortages, he said.

“When Japanese people come here, they feel they’re in a foreign land because there are so many tourists,” Mr. Kobayashi, 56, added as his taxi approached a bottleneck near a popular temple. “It’s not Kyoto anymore.”

Some rural locations are feeling the strain for the first time. One is Fuji City, about 200 miles by road east of Kyoto in Shizuoka Prefecture.

After a bridge with a direct view of Mount Fuji started to become popular on social media late last year, Shizuoka’s tourism department said on Instagram that it was a good spot for “beautiful, dreamlike pictures.” Left unsaid was that the bridge sat in a residential area with no visitor parking spaces, public toilets or garbage cans.

Many visitors littered, parked in driveways and in some cases dodged traffic to take photos from the bridge’s median strip, residents said in interviews.

Over a public holiday last month, about 300 tourists arrived daily for four days, standing in a line for photos that coiled down the street, said Mitsuo Kato, 86, who lives by the bridge.

“They just park here,” Mr. Kato said outside his home on a recent Sunday, as groups of tourists from South Korea diligently took photos of clouds that were obscuring Mount Fuji. “So we had to put up signs.”

Officials across Japan have been responding to the tourism surge with varying degrees of efficacy.

In Fuji City, the authorities erected a makeshift six-car parking lot and started to build a larger one that would fit 15 cars and include a bathroom, said Motohiro Sano, a local tourism official.

In a neighboring prefecture, Yamanashi, officials in the town of Fujikawaguchiko put up a billboard-size screen last month to deter tourists from photographing a Lawson convenience store whose blue awning sits beneath the mountain and became a staple of social media posts. The screen is now dotted with holes large enough to fit a phone camera lens, the local news media reported .

In Shibuya, a heavily visited area of Tokyo, officials announced plans to ban drinking alcohol outdoors at night in an attempt to curb bad behavior by young people and tourists.

And in Kyoto, where signs in train stations ask visitors to “mind your manners,” the government began running special buses for tourists this month.

At the city’s Nishiki market, where some residents have complained of finding grease stains on their clothing after squeezing through throngs of snacking tourists, Yoshino Yamaoka gestured to two signs hanging outside her barbecue eel restaurant.

Both said in English, “No eating while walking.” One had a larger font, and its text was underlined in red.

“People weren’t following it, so I put up this one with a stricter tone,” Ms. Yamaoka, 63, said of the bolder sign. But she wondered whether her new approach was too strict.

“Business depends on the tourists,” she said.

To beat the crowds on a recent weekend, some tourists visited popular Kyoto sites at sunrise or waited 40 minutes to eat at a popular ramen joint at 11 p.m. A few complained about the congestion they had helped to create.

“It’s a disaster,” said Paul Oostveen, 70, a tourist from the Netherlands, after leaving the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a popular attraction.

From his empty barbershop, Mr. Matsumoto said that he had successfully cut the hair of his two foreign clients and that he wouldn’t turn away others who stumbled through his door.

But he worried about providing good quality service to customers he couldn’t understand, he said, and would prefer that non-Japanese speakers go elsewhere.

Even though tourism is good for the nation, he added over the drone of a radio, “There’s a part of me that’s not fully content.”

Ukraine-Russia war: Latest updates

All the developments and analysis on the war in Ukraine from our specialists and live team.

Tuesday 11 June 2024 15:38, UK

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

  • Big picture: Everything you need to know about the war right now
  • Your questions answered:  Are there any signs of an underground resistance in Russia?

While we haven't been able to bring you rolling coverage today, we have been keeping an eye on the latest updates.

Russian forces have said they've taken control of two villages in Ukraine - one in southern's Kharkiv region and another in the eastern Luhansk region.

Ukraine has not yet commented on the claims.

Here are the other main developments so far today:

  • A Russian SU-34 bomber crashed during a routine training flight likely due to a technical malfunction, killing the crew on board Russian news agencies reported;
  • Russia and its ally Belarus launched a second stage of drills intended to train their troops in tactical nuclear weapons;
  • The US removed restrictions on the transfer of American weapons and training to the Azov Brigade - a high-profile Ukrainian military unit;
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed for short-term help in repairing his country's electricity network and long-term investment in its energy system;
  • In a joint news conference with Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, he also said Ukraine has done everything it needs to start accession negotiations with the European Union.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

We're starting the week by taking a few steps back and giving an overview of where the conflict is at.

Putin warns Russia could provide long-range weapons to attack West

Last week started with the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, at which Vladimir Putin was joined by the leaders of Russia's closest allies.

During a session with international journalists, the Russian president warned he could provide long-range weapons to attack the West.

He said the recent actions by the West would further undermine international security and could lead to "very serious problems".

"That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way," he added.

His warning came after Joe Biden partially lifted restrictions on how Ukraine can use military supplies provided by the US, meaning they could be used to strike inside Russia.

Mr Putin also reaffirmed Russia's position on nuclear weapons, saying the conditions for using them were clearly spelled out in Moscow's security doctrine.

"If somebody's actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we consider it possible to use all means at our disposal," he said.

Ukraine has right to strike 'legitimate targets in Russia', NATO chief says

It also seems Ukraine might be given the go-ahead to strike Russia, with the NATO secretary general saying it has the right to attack legitimate military targets.

"Ukraine has the right to self defence," Jens Stoltenberg said during a news conference with Ulf Kristersson, the Swedish prime minister, at a military base near Stockholm.

"The right to self defence also includes the right to hit legitimate, military targets on the territory of the attacking party, the aggressor - in this case Russia."

His comments came after Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, claimed that HIMARS rockets have been used since then on civilian targets.

Ukrainian warplane fires weapon at target inside Russia for first time

Following the NATO chief's comments, a military source told Sky News a Ukrainian warplane has for the first time fired a weapon that struck a target inside Russia.

The source said a "Russian command node" was hit on Sunday in the area of Belgorod, a western Russian region near the Ukraine border which has come under frequent attack.

It was not immediately clear what type of munition was used in the attack, including whether or not it had been a Western weapon.

The United States and France recently said the Ukrainian armed forces were permitted to use their arms to strike military targets inside Russia - from where Russian forces are launching attacks against Ukraine.

You can read that full story here ...

Latest 'battlefield situation'

A detailed map showing the latest situation on the ground in Ukraine has been published by the UK defence ministry.

The area in light pink is territory taken by Russia since it invaded in February 2022.

Those areas in a darker shade of pink show territory - including Crimea - seized by Russia since 2014.

White, blue and red circles represent the grouping of forces while the red arrows show likely Russian attacks.

Despite the recent heavy bombardment of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city, it is not in the seized sections.

However, a couple of small areas north of Kharkiv, on the Russian border, are shaded light pink.

Zelenskyy attends talks in Qatar

In what could be seen as a step towards progress, Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Qatar for talks with the state's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The Ukrainian president discussed Qatar's participation in a process of returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, as well as bilateral economic and security issues.

In March, Ukraine and Russia exchanged six children via Qatari mediation.

Mr Zelenskyy also made a surprise trip to the Philippines to thank the country for agreeing to participate in the upcoming peace summit being held in Switzerland.

Thank you for reading.

We will be back soon with more updates from the war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has said he does not see the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons as set out in Russia's nuclear doctrine - but added he could not rule out a change to the doctrine.

"We have a nuclear doctrine which states that the use of nuclear arms is possible in an exceptional case, when the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country is threatened," he told the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"But the doctrine can be changed.

"The same applies to nuclear tests. We will carry out tests if needed, but so far there is no such need."

Russia could send weapons to adversaries of the West, Vladimir Putin has warned for a second time.

The Russian president repeated the warning from earlier this week during the St Petersburg Economic Forum.

He did not say what countries or entities he was referring to, and he stressed that Moscow is not doing it currently.

"If they supply (weapons) to the combat zone and call for using these weapons against our territory, why don't we have the right to do the same?" he told the crowds.

"But I'm not ready to say that we will be doing it tomorrow, either."

On Wednesday, Putin told international journalists that Russia could provide long-range weapons to others to strike Western targets in response to NATO allies allowing Ukraine to use their arms to attack Russian territory.

He also reaffirmed Moscow's readiness to use nuclear weapons if it sees a threat to its sovereignty.

Joe Biden has apologised to Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the recent delay in approving new US aid for Ukraine.

Last month, following months of political disagreements, the Senate passed $95bn (£76.2bn) in war aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan .

"I apologise for those weeks of not knowing," the US president said.

"Some of our very conservative members [of Congress] were holding it up.

"But we got it done, finally. We're still in - completely, totally."

The Ukrainian president thanked his counterpart for American assistance.

"It's very important that you stay with us," he said.

"It's very important that in this unity, the United States of America, all American people stay with Ukraine, like it was during World War Two - how the United States helped to save human lives, to save Europe."

The two men were speaking in Paris, the day after D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

Russia needs to boost its use of non-Western currencies, Vladimir Putin said as he addressed the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

He also said his country needs to reduce imports while calling for a major expansion of its domestic financial markets.

Trade with Asia is soaring, he told delegates, adding that almost two fifths of Russian external trade is now in roubles.

The share conducted in US dollars, euros and other Western currencies has declined.

Russia will try to boost the share of settlements conducted in the currencies of BRICS countries - which include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, Mr Putin said.

"Last year, the share of payments for Russian exports in the so–called 'toxic' currencies of unfriendly states halved, while the share of the rouble in export and import transactions is growing - it is approaching 40% today," the president said.

Russia has referred to nations that imposed sanctions on it as "unfriendly".

The session begins with an address by the Russian president.

Vladimir Putin says there is a race among world powers to establish sovereignty.

He speaks of the need for countries to both establish partnerships and also to look internally to tackle challenges presented by the current global economic landscape.

Despite all the "obstacles and illegitimate sanctions", Russia remains one of the world's economic leaders, he says.

He adds that "friendly countries" - those that have not joined sanctions against Moscow - account for three quarters of Russia's mutual trade turnover, and praises them for that.

Countries including India and China have strengthened economic ties since Mr Putin launched his war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has taken to the stage in St Petersburg to address the International Economic Forum there.

He's joined by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwais and Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora.

Chairing the session is Sergey Karaganov - a Russian political scientist.

We'll bring you any key lines here in this live blog.

A T-shirt is on sale at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum printed with a phrase attributed to Vladimir Putin, Sky News has discovered.

"If a fight is inevitable, throw the first punch," it says.

The Russian president reportedly said it in 2015.

He apparently explained that it was something he had learned while growing up on the streets of Leningrad - a former name of St Petersburg.
