East Africa — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Think of safari, and it’s East Africa’s landscapes that come to mind — one of the last places to catch the Big Five . Look beyond the plains in a trip to East Africa and you’ll also discover the Great Rift Valley’s many other wonders such as Lake Victoria, Kenya ’s pristine beaches, and the Zanzibar islands among them.

Tour Highlights

  • Jump into a 4x4 for that timeless safari experience in Tsavo East , Amboseli , or Ngorongoro - just three of a whole host of protected spaces from which to take home unforgettable memories of elephants, rhinos, and lions in their natural environment
  • Pull on your hiking boots and scale the heady heights of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain at 5,895 meters.
  • Experience the grandeur of Victoria Falls – ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ – up close, from the comfort of a viewing platform, or by rafting the bubbling white water of Zambezi Gorge
  • Hit the idyllic beaches of Kenya or Zanzibar and soak up the rays on pristine sands, splash about in the warm shallows, or delve beneath the waves for a spot of world-class scuba diving
  • Delve into the forests of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda for that once in a lifetime encounter with gorillas in the mist, coming eye to eye with our closest living relatives as their family groups relax in the shade of the lush vegetation
  • Witness one of the world’s largest animal migrations, as more than two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross the plains of the Masai Mara and Serengeti in search of fresh grass.

Travel Tips

  • The best time to visit East Africa is generally considered to be from July to November, during the region’s long dry season. Temperatures are mild, and July sees the start of the wildebeest migration, although this time is also peak period, with accommodation booking up quickly.
  • East Africa is incredibly safe as a destination, with tour companies and locals alike going out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. Follow standard practices, such as not leaving valuables unattended, and you won’t have any problems.
  • Do like the locals, and wear light weave and light color natural fabrics such as cotton, rather than tight-fitting man-made materials, to stay cool in the sun. Make sure you’ve also packed a sun hat.
  • Don’t worry if you don’t run to schedule. Time is a little more fluid in East Africa than in the west, however, this doesn’t mean you’ll have to miss out on any activities or experiences, with additional time built in for just this eventuality!

Popular East Africa Safari Destinations

east african tours

East Africa is home to some of the world’s most spectacular safari destinations. From the endless plains of the Serengeti to the forests of Rwanda, this region of the world offers abundant wildlife and stunning natural wonders. Here are several of the top countries in East Africa for spectacular safaris:

While East African safaris are possible year-round, many travelers aim for the annual Great Migration in Tanzania and Kenya between July and October.

The dry season from July through October is considered the peak safari season in most parks. Grasslands are less dense, making it easier to see the wildlife. Large herds congregate around dwindling water sources. From July to October, you can witness the Great Migration in Kenya's Masai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti as wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move between the countries.

Visiting during the November to June wet season has advantages too. Rains bring the landscape to life with greenery and wildflowers. The climate is also quite comfortable, aside from potential afternoon rainstorms. Ultimately the best time to visit East Africa depends on your safari goals, and we can help you find the perfect time for your trip.

With its sprawling savannas, majestic mountains, and abundant wildlife, East Africa offers seemingly endless options for extraordinary safaris. Here are some of the best places to visit in East Africa on safari :

  • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania: The Serengeti savannas are famous for the Great Migration and are home to the Big Five. Explore the vast plains and river crossings on the ultimate wildlife safari.
  • Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya: Known for large lion, leopard, and cheetah populations, Masai Mara is a wildlife viewing paradise. Time your visit for the Migration's incredible sightings across the lush landscape.
  • Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania: The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO site offering remarkable scenery and wildlife density in a unique caldera setting. From cultural villages to surprising landscapes, experience the untouched beauty on safari.
  • Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Home to endangered mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park offers travelers a chance to trek the forested slopes to observe the surprisingly friendly gorilla families up close.
  • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda: The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a prime destination for tracking endangered mountain gorillas amidst lush rainforest terrain to spend afternoons watching the playful animals.

From up-close encounters with iconic wildlife to seeing breathtaking natural wonders, East Africa promises unforgettable safari experiences. Here are some of the top things to do in East Africa on safari :

  • See millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania during the Great Migration
  • Trek through dense rainforests to observe gorillas in their natural habitat
  • Explore the Serengeti, Masai Mara, and other reserves on guided drives to spot the Big Five and bountiful wildlife
  • Gain a unique aerial perspective flying over the Serengeti plains during sunrise on a hot-air balloon safari
  • Descend into the massive Ngorongoro Crate for close-up sightings of lions, elephants, rhinos, and more
  • Discover nocturnal wildlife like leopards, bush babies, and hyenas on specialized nighttime game drives
  • Learn about Maasai traditions and way of life when visiting a village community

The diversity of iconic African wildlife you may encounter on an East African safari is truly phenomenal. Each park promises different highlights and concentrations of animals to discover, and here are some of the most notable creatures:

  • Nile crocodiles

An East African safari is a true adventure, so come prepared with proper attire and gear to make the most of your experience . We suggest safari-goers pack the following in addition to one’s typical packing list:

  • Neutral, light-colored clothing
  • Lightweight, waterproof rain jacket
  • Long pants for bush walks
  • Hiking boots or walking shoes
  • Camera with a zoom lens and extra memory cards
  • Insect repellent
  • UV protection, including but not limited to sunscreen, hats, lip balm, and sunglasses

Safaris throughout East Africa are safe.

Countries like Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda have incredible reputations as premier safari destinations, with wildlife posing little threat when proper precautions are taken. By following the instructions and guidance of your expert game rangers and the park rules, you can safely observe wildlife in their natural habitats.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing or luggage theft can happen but are uncommon during East African safaris within the tourism infrastructure. Simple vigilance in securing valuables and working closely with your guides will minimize any security issues.

Whether you seek the classic savanna wildlife spectacle or prefer going beyond the beaten path, we can help you find the best East African safari itinerary and tailor the perfect trip just for you. Here are some of our most popular safaris to inspire your travels:

  • Embark on the ultimate East African adventure with our Wildlife Wonder: 11-Day Kenya and Tanzania safari, pairing Kenya's renowned Masai Mara with Tanzania's iconic Serengeti for a comprehensive big game experience.
  • Venture beyond the well-trodden safari trail to the hidden wonders of East Africa on our Untouched East Africa: 11-Day Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda journey, combining wildlife, culture and natural beauty in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

Map of the route for Ultimate East Africa: Mountains & the Masai Mara

Places visited

Day 1 nairobi.

Arrive at any time.

Prepare for tomorrow’s early morning by checking out the hotel bar with your newest friends. Travelling can take a lot out of you so sit back, fill those food and drink needs, and spend a chill night becoming familiar with your group and CEO.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 nairobi/masai mara.

Hit the road and journey through the Great Rift Valley today on the way to one of the most famous national parks in Africa and Kenya’s premier wildlife reserve.

Stretch those legs and take in your surroundings before heading on a late afternoon wildlife safari drive with excellent chances of seeing the “big five”. This natural environment coupled with the park’s varied wildlife provides for a spectacular safari experience.

Meals included:

Day 3 masai mara.

Grab those cameras and jump in the safari vehicle with your driver/guide to spot wildlife in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Listen to your guide describe the African bush as you traverse one of the world’s top safari destinations. Masai Mara is known for its abundance of big cats and wildebeest (see if you can capture a picture of one)!

Day 4 Masai Mara/Lake Nakuru National Park

Awake to the sounds of the bush as your alarm clock before breaking down camp and jumping in the Lando. Today, the group is heading to Lake Nakuru, known for harbouring flocks of pink flamingos and a rich variety of bird species.

Before reaching the safari lodge inside Lake Nakuru National Park, you’ll stop at the G Adventures-supported Ubuntu Cafe where you will enjoy a meal and have the opportunity to shop for locally and internationally sold products as memorable and impactful souvenirs.

Later, the group will go on an afternoon wildlife drive through the area.

Day 5 Lake Nakuru National Park/Eldoret

Another day, another chance to see more wildlife and live your African safari dream. After your morning safari drive around Lake Nakuru keeping your eyes wide open in search of buffalo, impala, and the elusive leopard. The group will bump along in the Lando sharing photos of your day on the road to Eldoret.

Day 6 Eldoret/Kampala

It’s time to cross another country off of those travel lists as you cross the border from Kenya into Uganda. Drive along reminiscing on inside jokes and experiences from the trip before camping in Kampala (the country's capital) where you will arrive in the late afternoon.

Day 7 Kampala/Lake Bunyonyi

Even though you get to do something pretty awesome everyday you’re going to cross the equator today in the Lando (which we think is a pretty cool thing to be able to add to a travel resume) and head off to Lake Bunyonyi.

The name Bunyonyi means ‘place of many little birds’ and it is undoubtedly the loveliest lake in Uganda. It’s winding shores encircle 29 islands and its surrounded by steep terraced hillsides that will have you wondering if you are somewhere in Asia. But the best part is that Lake Bunyonyi is a croc and hippo free lake (unlike many lakes in East Africa) so you can swim in its calm waters as much as you like… such bliss!

Day 8 Gorilla Trek

Today’s the day that some of your dreams may just come true because you are going on a guided mountain gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (so insanely cool!) So get ready to embark on an unforgettable hike deep into the jungle through volcano forests alongside a park ranger to search for mountain gorillas. The treks can vary in length and difficulty so be prepared for a challenge, but know that if you spot these majestic creatures (we share 98% of our DNA with them) it will all be worth it.

Note: Ugandan authorities are fiercely protective of this natural treasure, and currently permit only a maximum of eight people, per day, to visit a given gorilla family. The group will be split into different sub-groups for the trek, and depending on the number of travellers, different sub-groups may do their trek on different days.

Day 9 Lake Bunyonyi

Let’s give Lake Bunyonyi some love today. Explore this magical place as the morning mist rises off of the gently lapping waters. With tons of optional activities to choose from like, swimming, hiking, canoeing, bird watching, or a motorboat tour of the lake there’s no time to be bored. Then relax together at the lodge in the evening talking about your group gorilla experiences.

Day 10 Lake Bunyonyi/Kalinzu Forest Reserve

Sit back, relax, and watch the Ugandan countryside slip past on today’s journey to Kalinzu Forest Reserve further north in the country.

The forest reserve is adjacent to Queen Elizabeth National Park and is characterized by open savannah, large area of swamp around Lake George, and the extensive Maramagambo Forest in the southeast. There’s a lot of landscapes to experience so what are you waiting for? Get started!

Day 11 Kalinzu Forest Reserve/Lake Mburo National Park

You know that saying, “the early bird gets the worm” well in this case the early bird gets to see chimpanzees. Get up early for an included chimpanzee tracking excursion and explore the verdant Kalinzu Forest Reserve with a ranger while being on the lookout for these chimpanzee families.

Afterwards, the group will visit a tea plantation before setting off to Lake Mburo. Once you arrive there you can choose to book an afternoon boat cruise on the lake, or explore the local area on foot.

Day 12 Lake Mburo National Park/Jinja

Head back across the equator today in the Lando; Uganda is one of the few countries in the world where you can cross this imaginary geographical line on land.

Observe how water swirls in opposite directions on either side of the equator and then stop to enjoy a meal at the G Adventures-supported AidChild Equation Café & Gallery. With full stomachs and even more full hearts the group will continue on to Jinja, the adventure capital of Uganda.

Day 13 Jinja

Get out there, get active, and have some fun! Explore Jinja today solo or with your group by participating in the plethora of outdoor and adventure activities they have to offer.

Choose to raft down the White Nile River, break a sweat mountain biking up and down the hills surrounding the town, or for a more laid back day check out the local market. Keep your eyes ready to spot monkeys and other wildlife that can wander to the outskirts of this town.

Day 14 Jinja/Eldoret

Today is a bit of a travel day but you won’t mind because you could use the rest. The group will be leaving Uganda and crossing over into Kenya and travel to Eldoret. Hang out together as a group and enjoy a nice evening camping under the stars.

Day 15 Eldoret/Nairobi

After your adventurous experiences yesterday you’ll be glad to have a more low-key travel day to replenish your energy. So sit back and enjoy the ride as the group transfers through the Kenyan countryside to Nairobi. We’re thinking naps, story time, and then maybe a mini dance party in the Lando to get you through the day. (Toto’s Africa song anyone?)

Day 16 Nairobi/Arusha

Hop in the shuttle and hit the road in style as you cross through the semi-arid lands of the Maasai people en route to Arusha, Tanzania. Marvel at the epic views of mighty Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance and swap stories with your road trip buddies!

Day 17 Arusha/Serengeti National Park

Well folks it’s time for the Africa you have all imagined, the experience that has been depicted over and over again in books, movies, and television. So grab those cameras, purchase a quirky bucket hat, and head out on a wildlife safari drive into one of the most famous national parks in Africa; the Serengeti.

Get ready for abundant wildlife, vast golden plains dotted with thorny acacia trees, and hippo-filled rivers as you begin a 3-day and 2-night excursion into the park itself and the great Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 18 Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro

Grab your buddies and jump aboard for one last morning safari in the Serengeti. As the sun rises higher in the sky watch the animal kingdom come to life in this grassland savannah before returning to break down camp.

Then it’s on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, famous for Africa’s best wildlife viewing. Get ready for epic views from the crater rim and watch as animals meander around below drinking water from the permanent supply on the crater floor. You’ll be setting up camp in the late afternoon at a site near the crater rim and then you can spend the rest of the day enjoying one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on the planet.

Day 19 Ngorongoro/Arusha

It’s time to experience “Africa’s Garden of Eden” on a more personal level. Today, venture down to the crater floor where the group will embark on a final safari experience. Have those cameras charged and at the ready because, let’s face it if you are going to see any wildlife this would be the place (and we are so excited for you)!

The animals are bound to this area by the crater walls and the enclosed nature of the crater means its own ecosystem has been created think; rich grasslands, swamps, acacia forests, and Lake Makat so get ready to see some magic.

With full camera rolls the group will exit the crater in the late morning and travel back to Arusha. Swap stories along the way, pick those favourite photos from earlier, or simply sit back and let yourself enjoy the passing scenery as you cruise along.

Day 20 Arusha/Dar es Salaam

Leave Arusha early and be on the lookout for the mighty Mt Kilimanjaro on the road towards Dar es Salaam and watch as the Tanzanian countryside passes by and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean make their debut.

The city started as a fishing village in the mid 19th century before becoming a port and trading centre. The group will spend the night here before embarking for the island beaches of Zanzibar.

Want to cut travel time in half and spend more time in Stone Town? Pre-book the Zanzibar Express on the checkout page to include this optional activity on your tour.

Day 21 Dar es Salaam/Stone Town

After the jam packed last few days of this trip where you are going next is going to be just what you needed. Wake in Dar es Salaam before hopping on the ferry to the paradise of Zanzibar.

Get ready for picturesque island beaches that will make you contemplate staying here and living off the grid. Few places on this planet are as entrancing and exotic as this Tanzanian archipelago so get ready to enjoy it, take loads of pictures, and relax in a place that has long lured backpackers and adventurers to it’s sandy shores.

Day 22 Beach day in Zanzibar

Roll out of bed this morning in Stone Town and explore the heart of Zanzibar. Wander the winding historic unpaved alleyways of Stone Town passing by balconies and gigantic wooden carved doors along the way.

Get lost and spend hours exploring the streets and squares, drinking potent coffee from pavement vendors and buying sweetmeats from tiny cafes. Keep an eye out for tinga-tinga paintings, antique shops, beautifully printed cloths (kangas and kikois worn by local people), little carved chests with copper inlays, and spices – all beautiful presents or memories to take home. Transfer to the tropical haven of Jambiani for a relaxing few days as a group.

Day 23 Beach day in Zanzibar

Wake up in this island paradise and get ready to seize the day. You’ll be exploring one of the world’s great cultural crossroads… think Africa meets Arabia and add the Indian Ocean into the mix as the cherry on top.

The day is yours to spend as you choose; head out for a diving experience, grab some goggles and go snorkelling, hop aboard a sailing trip, or just lounge on the beach and relax. Zanzibar’s tropical setting, unique culture, and active beach-party scene make this place a very enjoyable East African Indian Ocean experience.

Day 24 Stone Town

Your most difficult task today is going to be pulling yourself away from the beauty that surrounds you in Jambiani. Travel back to Stone Town on the other side of the island and explore the heart of Zanzibar.

The tour ends in the late morning.

Tanzania Safari Types

What you should know about tanzania.

Tanzania is not only the best second safari destination in East Africa but also turns out to be among those irresistible African safari destinations that one should visit at all costs. With over 16 safari parks, there is a lot of diversity in its tourism industry. The destinations are enough to keep you engaged for over a month. The pleasant climate, beautiful natural scenery, extra-ordinary wildlife, and very friendly residents all add up for a great Tanzania tours experience. Partaking a cultural experience is a must do here. Over ahundred ethnic groups live in this marvelous country. This leaves you with lots of cultural things to engage in or learn, lots of local cusines to munch on and cultural experience to be part of. Getting this done yourself is very possible but any help of a Tanzania tours and travel company like Focus East Africa Tours will definitely help you get the most from your escapade. We do offer lots of groups excursions and occasionally organize for a bush hunting experience with the locals. Below are some of the interesting stuff you have to know about Tanzania.

Why go on Tanzania tours

Tanzania is a place where you can watch a live episode of the Lion King. This can best be done from Serengeti as it has the highest numbers of lions in the whole world. No safari to Tanzania can be complete without a visit to the Serengeti. It shelters almost every wildlife you would want to see. On a lucky visit, you could see the Wildebeest Migration, an adventure film in the wild. Ngongoro Conservation Area is a another great spot for wildlife viewing. The best sights here are elephants, cheetahs and lions. Ngorongoro and Serengeti are just adjascent to each other; all sitting on the Nothern region of Tanzania. Mount Kilimanjaro offers one of the best physical challenges to mountain climbers. It is referred to as the "Roof of Africa" because its apparently the highest point on the continent. No place gives you a better opportunity to relax and unwind like Zanzibar does. Its not only one of the best honeymoon spots but also one of the finest when it comes to beach holidays in Africa. There is just so much to see on safari tours to Tanzania.

Cost of a Tanzania safari

So how much does a safari in Tanzania cost? The cost of your Tanzania safari depends on a couple of things like the level of accommodation you are using, the number of days, preferred activities, level of vehicle, mode of transportation, your preferred destinations, bargaining power and so much more. Clients who opt for high end Tanzania safari lodges end up paying more for a super luxury experience. The best safari lodges in Tanzania can charge you over $1500 per person per night. This causes a huge hike on your total safari cost. More days and activities means more expenditures. If you wish to combine the Northern and Southern regions of Tanzania in a single package then flights will likely be involved to shorten the distance. Some of the ways of reducing the cost of your tours is by travelling in or joining a group, opting for shorter trips, staying in moderate accommodation facilities, choosing tour destinations that connect easily to each other and definitely bargainng more.

Where to go

The best tanzania safari parks are found on the northern region of the country. These include Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area , Lake Manyara National Park , Arusha National Park , Mount Kilimanjaro National Park , Tarangire National Park plus a few more destinations. The most common and easiest to join are Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara and Tarangire. Kilimanjaro is common too but a bit hard to connect with the rest since it requires a minimum of five days to ascend and descend it. The best safaris in Tanzania are experienced from the northern circuit. The south does have great destinations too but are very remote and require flights. Some of the destinations in the south are Ruaha National Park and Selous Game Reserve . The south is way much cheaper than the north in terms of accommodation. The parks are also less crowded by people which is not the case with the north. You will have all the loneliness in the wild on your game drives.

Southern VS Northern Tanzania Safaris

Both regions are good for tours in Tanzania. However, the north has some of the country's best tourist attractions. So many safaris take place in the north and the tour parks are usually crowded with so many tourists. This has led to a rise in competition around the region. The lodges are very pricey, vehicles are charged at a higher rate and meals are expensive too. Northern Tanzania Safaris are best for shorter trips BUT still, if your pockets are smiling, you can do longer trips for better experiences. A southern Tanzania safari is more affordable but you might have to budget money for flights. Travelling to the north is highly recommended.

Best time to go on a safari in Tanzania

Despite being an all year African safari destination. The best time to visit Tanzania is during the dry season from June through to October. Those that want to see the great wildebeest migration should visit between June and July. Wildebeest Calving can best be spotted between January to February. Animals become easy to spot in the dry season because they tend to roam more around water bodies to hydrate often unlike in the rainy season when the can easily access water from wherever they might be or perhaps take shelter from the rain. The southern circuit has some of the best spots for birders. Bird watching trips are recommended for the wet months of the year.

Flights VS 4x4 Safari Cars

Using flights to connect various destinations is a great chance to have a bird's eye view of the national parks. It also shortens the distances and makes your movements easy. Please note that Tanzania is a very big country and there is quite some distance between each tours destination. Flights come at an expense and most of the time they'll charge you for a 4x4 safari vehicle too since a guide will have to follow you and pick you up when the flight lands. Only opt for flights if you can fix them in your budget.

Budget or Luxury Tanzania Safaris

Tanzania receives over 1.5 million tourists each year. Over 90% of this number visits at least one or two of the northern circuit destinations. This huge number has increased competition and pushed it to a near luxury safari destination. If you have Tanzania safaris on your budget list then you ought to be ready to spend a good amount of money on your safari. The budget experiences are still expensive compared to other destinations like Uganda , Rwanda and Kenya . Just as mentioned above, the southern and western circuits offer a more rewarding budget experience compared to the north. You can get to save more by visiting Tanzania safari parks situated in these regions. Your Tanzania safari company also contributes much to your final safari quote. Some operators will offer you good rates while others will want to make abnormal profits from your trip. We offer very affordable Tanzania holidays . Our safari packages come at unbeatable offers.

Packing List & Clothing on a safari in Tanzania

Your activities and destinations determine the kind of stuff or clothes that you should pack for your tours in Tanzania. The kind of clothes or equipment that you pack for a Kilimanjaro safari contradicts the list for wildlife safaris. Its best to contact us after booking your safari and we shall guide you accordingly.

Zanzibar Extensions

Zanzibar Island is one of the true tickets to paradise. The island is one of Africa's finest when it comes to beach holidays. Its a great place for honeymoon or romantic getaways too. This island is usually added to the end of your safari to kill of your fatigue before you depart. The easiest way to access Zanzibar is by using flights. Just in case you wish to add Zanzibar to the end of your package, you can request us to organize this for you.

East Africa Adventure Tour Reviews

Let me start by saying that booking our Uganda/Rwanda safari through Mukisa was truly one of the best decisions that we’ve ever made! I am the type of person that meticulously plans every trip and will read through countless reviews, itineraries, etc. before making a decision. For this trip in particular, we were looking for a private tour that had a wide range of activities from multiple treks to game drives and cultural experiences. What initially drew me to Mukisa was the positive feedback from other guests and a mention on their website that they encourage/aid female tour guides. Upon reaching out through their website, I was immediately impressed with Richard’s quick responses, level of detail and ability to accommodate all of our requests. We started with the “10 Days Safari to Encounter Uganda’s Gorillas, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour” but Richard was able to help us customize the trip and integrate other activities that we were interested in - for example, my husband and I wanted to include a bike ride at the end of our trip. We originally didn’t think this could be part of our safari experience so reached out to a few local bike companies but received no responses. I posed the question to Richard (thinking it would be difficult to accommodate) and within 24 hours, he had found us a bike guide and adjusted our trip’s itinerary. Richard showed a tremendous amount of professionalism throughout the planning process, and loved that he met us in-person at the start of our trip! In terms of the actual safari, I could write several pages on all of the things that we loved but I’ll keep it to a few highlights: 1. The safari had an incredibly wide range of things to do, see, explore, etc. - from the types of animals (we were able to see the Big 5!) to the environments, ranging from jungle to forest to savannah. It was a lot to squeeze into 11 days but we truly feel like we left Uganda/Rwanda with a well-rounded experience. 2. All of the accommodations were conveniently located, clean and comfortable. If possible, we would recommend staying at the same hotel for at least 2 nights/each so you can feel settled and potentially upgrading 1-2 hotels, if you’re looking for additional amenities (e.g. swimming pool). Elephant Hab was our favorite hotel in Uganda. 3. We absolutely adored our guide & driver! Most of the other tour groups that we encountered had a single male guide/driver and we loved that Mukisa prioritized giving opportunities to female guides. Mable and Solomon went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed every aspect of our trip and even made adjustments to the itinerary on the fly. Mable had a wealth of knowledge about the animals, culture, people, etc. and Solomon was an exceptional driver - making sure we saw all of the animals on our bucket list and navigating the constantly changing conditions. 4. It was quite clear that Mukisa has a strong reputation in the safari community. Several of the hotel managers and rangers made comments to us that they always enjoy working with Mukisa, and they have some of the best guides/drivers. If you’ve made it this far through my review then I hope you’re now considering Mukisa for your upcoming trip. I do not typically write extensive reviews but I genuinely think that this company is one of the best out there and will make this trip everything you could’ve imagined and more!
A very great and good experience in Kenya to see big five we visit masai mara with Denis our guide and Tanzania our guides were very good we had a great trip we enjoy every second and my best spot was seeing lions hunt in the evening where they attack buffalos and like 5 lions were spotted In Uganda we only see gorillas and chimpanzee tracking my daughter was so amazed by the chimpanzees in kyambura in queen Elisabeth but we have a great trip which is unforgettable and we cant thank Victoria enough for putting together this and communication was perfect I recommend go explore safari
Michael and the team are just amazing and made the trip as comfortable as possible. Michael the guide had so much knowledge about the animals and vegetation. The porters are super friendly and the chef made some amazing meals I didn’t expect to get on the mountain. The route was spectacular from start to finish, the last lodge was a an amazing place to finish off the trip.

"Amazing experience. An incredible safari seeing so many animals with a very knowledgeable guide, then after exploring the beauty of Zanzibar. Very good tour leaders and a great bunch of travellers. Memories that will last a lifetime

"The Gorilla Experience was amazing, but the overall trip was quite poorly planned. It resulted in us travelling on the bus for8-10 hours a day, often arriving at the camp site only an hour before it was dark. If I had known that this was going to be the case, I would have just flown to Uganda and gone straight to the Gorilla Park! Also our guide was not very good- very little information was given so I felt quite disconnected from the countries.

According to the United Nations scheme of geographic regions, 20 territories make up  East Africa . It sits equidistant from the equator and The Tropic of Cancer.  East Africa  is a land of vast open spaces and thereby serves as a playground for many unique and fascinating animals.

When is the best time to travel to East Africa?

The size and variety in East Africa means that it is a year round destination. However certain highlights are seasonal and are best visited during specific months.

Tanzania  is ideal during July and August when the weather is mild. This period is also ideal game viewing conditions in the  Serengeti  as the animals usually migrate to   Kenya’s Masai Mara  during the dry season.  December to mid March  is the calving season (when young animals are born) in the Serengeti and  Ngorongoro Crater  making this timing perfect for game viewing.

June to October  is great for  Zanzibar  as the temperature is around 28 degrees Celsius perfect for lazy beach days.

Kenya  plays home to the migration across the Mara River during July to  September . Wildlife usually stay in the Masai Mara until November before heading back to the Serengeti.

What are the Highlights of East Africa?

Game viewing.

Game viewing through East Africa is exquisite, and perfectly combines Africa’s top three national parks.  Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater , and the Masai Mara National Reserve  are rich with fauna and flora. From August through to September, the Masai Mara boasts the incredible wildebeest migration , and is the peak for wildlife and game viewing action.

The Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater lie adjacent to each other and are both wonderful year-round game-viewing destinations.

Adventure Activities

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania offers climbing enthusiasts the opportunity to climb to new heights. The mountain is not only for champion mountaineers. If you’ve got  warm clothes,  a  well-equipped guide  and a lot of  determination you’re halfway there.

Between August and November each year, Kenya’s world-famous Masai Mara reserve hosts the region’s magnificent wildebeest migration , but it also has one of the most diversified permanent animal populations.

The Amboseli and Samburu wildlife parks are two of Kenya’s most popular safari destinations . Kenya is a great place to visit if you want to see giraffes up close at Giraffe Manor, hot air balloon over the Masai Mara or just to see some of the best game reserves in the world.

Nairobi National Park has a diverse range of species , including lions, African leopards, elephants, cheetahs, eastern black rhinos, cape buffalo, coke’s hartebeest, hippo, giraffe, zebra, and baboons.

When it comes to a safari in East Africa, Rwanda is truly unique .  Fly into Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, and you’ll be in the verdant wonderland of the Volcanoes National Park, the rainforest home to numerous mountain gorilla families, a great area for gorilla trekking.

Volcanoes National Park has six active and three dead volcanoes , it’s breathtakingly gorgeous, and it’s home to the nearly extinct mountain gorilla. The latter is the park’s main draw, but this Rwandan part of the Virunga Massif, which crosses the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, offers many additional trekking routes to explore, even if you aren’t looking for gorillas. You could see indigenous golden monkeys, forest elephants, or buffalo if you look for them.

Nyungwe National Park is East Africa’s biggest expanse of tropical rainforest, covering over 1,000km2 and home to a massive population of chimps, as well as Ruwenzori colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys. There are also 130 kilometres of hiking paths of various lengths. The Igishigishigi Trail is the shortest and goes to East Africa’s tallest canopy walk, while the Bigugu Trail climbs to the park’s namesake highest peak at 2,950m.

The Serengeti , Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara, Tanzania’s most famous safari destinations , are all conveniently close to each other on the ‘Northern Safari Circuit,’ and, together with Tarangire, provide some of Africa’s greatest Big 5 game watching and wildebeest migration safaris .

Southern Tanzania is less well-known, although it has some of the best game reserves in the world, including Ruaha, Selous, and Katavi. The unique Mahale Mountains around Lake Tanganyika are intriguing for an off-the-beaten-path adventure into the bush, with woods full of chimpanzees and magnificent clouds of butterflies. Other places you can visit chimpanzees include Gombe Stream which also ranks among the finest places to track charismatic apes anywhere in Africa.

Mountain gorillas can be found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest . Because of a new partnership between local people, national parks, and visitors trekking to see gorillas, the number of gorillas is increasing.

Gorilla trekking is one of Africa’s most unique and remarkable experiences : see wild gorillas in their native environment, with no fences or any human interference other than mild acclimatization to human presence in the jungle.

Uganda is also a well-known bird-watching location, having a diverse range of exotic migratory and resident species. It provides the greatest on-foot chimp interactions in Africa at Kibale Forest, as well as unusual combo safaris in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks with big game and big primates.

When is the best month to travel to east africa.

  • East Africa in January

Despite the fact that it falls outside of the region’s ‘long’ and’short’ rain periods, January falls within Kenya’s rainy season. Because of the high temperatures in January, clear, sunny days are expected, resulting in excellent visibility, which should be ideal for viewing wildlife on safari in Kenya .

In terms of visitor numbers, January is a low season month for a safari in Tanzania . Despite the high humidity, this is the start of the Great Migration’s calving season, and it is a sight not to be missed. This is a rare opportunity to see predator-prey interactions in the wild.

Tourists love to go on safari in   Rwanda  in January because the weather is warm and sunny. Most of the time, it’s also dry. This is a great time to go gorilla-trekking because of the fantastic weather.

  • East Africa in February

Around 400 000 calves are born each year in the Serengeti during the month of February when millions of wildebeest flock to graze. This indicates the existence of large predators, such as big cats, and that a predatory encounter is inevitable. European migratory birds arrive in February as well, adorning the landscape with their brilliant colors.

Kenya’s climate in February is characterized by being relatively dry and clear. It’s much easier to see the predatory action between the animals on a Kenya Safari when the weather is like this.

This time of year is a popular time of year for tourists to go on safari in Rwanda because the weather is warm and sunny. In most cases, it is also dry. Going gorilla trekking right now is a no-brainer because of the perfect weather.

  • East Africa in March

During March, a safari in Tanzania’s Serengeti is great because of the lush green landscapes, with vast herds of wildebeest and zebra consuming enormous amounts of grass in preparation for the long journey northward.

This is one of the warmest times of year to visit the Seychelles . Not only is the weather nice and tranquil, but April also marks the commencement of superb diving options in and around the islands. This time of year is ideal for snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming.

  • East Africa in April

Tanzania’s “long” rains are still going strong in April. In addition to the lush vegetation that sometimes conceals animals, parks in the South and West tend to be particularly humid in April. Despite all of this, wildlife viewing in the Serengeti is fantastic and the Great Migration is in full swing.

  • East Africa in May

The start of the dry season, as well as the northern leg of the migration, occurs in May. Due to the high temperatures of Tanzania, the occasional afternoon or evening thundershower is extremely welcome.

In contrast, wildlife viewing in the Serengeti can be spectacular in May, with large herds of elephants and zebras traversing the park’s central and western regions.

If you can handle the rain and don’t mind getting muddy then May is also an excellent month to visit Rwanda . The rains provide an abundance of food, so the gorillas descend down the mountain slopes for warmth and vegetation.

May is one of the warmest months in the Seychelles, making it ideal for a beach vacation. May brings more spectacular diving possibilities around the islands on a Seychelles island holiday .

  • East Africa in June

Kenya ‘s  climate is cooler and less humid in June, making it an ideal time to travel with children in the country’s capital. In Tanzania, on the other hand, the parks and woodlands begin to dry out, making it an excellent time for game viewing in the Serengeti, particularly in the northernmost regions.

June marks the start of Rwanda’s long dry season, which is ideal for a gorilla trekking safari . Dry, strong trails facilitate trekking and tracking. As the month continues, the jungle becomes less dense, making the gorillas easier to photograph.

This is the start of the dry season in Zanzibar, and the weather is excellent for days on the beach or swimming on a Zanzibar holiday .

  • East Africa in July

This month marks the start of arguably the most well-known event in the natural world. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather along the Mara River’s banks, contemplating their fate.

After a fantastic journey to the Serengeti to see the Great Migration, Zanzibar is the ideal place to unwind and relax. A Zanzibar holiday in July’s dry season provides excellent temperatures and calm, clear seas.

  • East Africa in August

The migration begins to spill over into the Masai Mara as the wildebeest continue to cross the Mara River in the Serengeti.

Visitors and vehicle numbers are at their peak at this time of year, but this is due to the high density of predators in the area, as well as the frequent occurrences of predator-prey interactions, which make this a very popular time of year for a Kenya Safari .

August is the busiest month for gorilla treks in Rwanda . The foliage has completely disappeared, and the primates are running low on food. Photographic opportunities are at their greatest when the foliage is this thin.

  • East Africa in September

As the wildebeest make their way over the Mara River at this time of year, the crocodiles are usually well stocked with food and have enough to sustain them till next year.

We therefore suggest the more remote Ruaha and Selous areas during this period for a safari in Tanzania . Safaris in this part of the world are far more tranquil because of the abundance of wildlife and the low number of vehicles.

A Zanzibar holiday is also a fantastic experience to have in September. With mild temperatures and oceans that are still clear and tranquil.

  • East Africa in October

Rain is forecast for a safari in the Serengeti  and migrating herds are returning to the region’s revitalized grasslands in October.

The best places to see the herds in October are in Kenya’s southeastern Masai Mara and Tanzania’s northeastern Serengeti.

  • East Africa in November

The optimum time to go chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda is during the rainy season, even though gorilla trekking may be done at any time of year. It is during the month of November when witnessing the chimps is the most rewarding experience. Because of the abundance of foliage, chimpanzees do not have to travel far in order to forage, making them easy to track down.

In November, Uganda experiences a brief rainy season, and although the gorillas’ pathways may be muddy and difficult, they tend to descend down the mountain toward the plentiful food sources. This may shorten the journey to locate gorillas, as well as reducing the length of time spent in the rain.

  • East Africa in December

Since the rains commenced in December, thousands of wildebeest have moved into the Serengeti’s southernmost portion, where they are now approaching the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The calving season is barely a month away, so everyone can expect big bellies on their safari adventure .

Going gorilla trekking in Uganda during the short dry December season is great. Because the long rains have yet to arrive, the foliage is still quite thin. This means that photographing and discovering the primates of East Africa is much easier at this time of year, making it the perfect Christmas activity.

Our Recommended Activities in East Africa

  • Camel Safaris in East Africa
  • Coffee farm visit
  • Diving & Snorkelling in East Africa
  • Horseback riding in East Africa
  • Zanzibar Stone Town tour

A fairly new activity, camelback riding is an incredible experience. Camelback safaris take place in northern Kenya’s Laikipia county. These gentle creatures have a soft nature as they quietly stroll through the arid landscape. This mode of transport was used by the Arab traders and has filtered down to northern Kenya’s Samburu and Turkana tribes.

It’s the place where much of the world’s Java’s come from, and you can be part of it. East Africa is renowned for its high altitude and therefore good coffee-growing areas. Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, specifically, have big coffee and tea plantations working to their full capacity. The growing of coffee is both intricate and interesting and it is the perfect activity to do on arrival and or departure.

Any time of the year is a good time to explore the fascinating world that thrives below the surface of Africa’s lengthy and beautiful coastline. The coastline of Africa is very long and very interesting. These destinations hold an incredible number of water-based activities. Diving and snorkelling are just two of the many ways to explore and discover the fascinating and beautiful marine life and corals of these alluring waters.

Breath in the aromas of the bush and feel the breeze in your hair during an adventure on horseback. Horseback safaris are one of the best ways to get close to the bush without being on foot. The freedom of riding a horse across the plains is absolutely exhilarating.  While the more adventurous can enjoy several days of safari on horseback, those that are strapped for time can take a quick, half-day ride in the vicinity of the camp or lodge. Because horses aren’t seen as a threat, antelope and even animals, like lions and elephant, get much closer than they would to a group during a safari on foot. Horseback safaris are entirely safe. They take place in a completely controlled environment and the guides are knowledgeable and well-informed about the area.

Follow the trail of the sultans, slaves and explorers in the winding streets of Stone Town. Learn all about the events that shaped Zanzibar, from the excellent guides that lead the tours of Stone Town. Walk-in between the buildings where history shaped the city and visit the former Slave Market, the Anglican Cathedral, the House of Wonders, the Sultans’ Palace Museum and the Old Arab Fort and Dispensary.

Exciting East African Tours

Tanzania Safari

Safari happens almost everywhere you look in Tanzania. It’s been a way of life in East Africa’s second-largest country for decades. Few destinations in Africa can rival Tanzania’s diversity of wildlife and landscapes. From the classic savannah destinations of the Serengeti, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater to the beaches and coral reefs of Zanzibar, a Tanzania safari delivers one massive experience after another.

Hardly any other destination on Earth can offer a wildlife encounter to match the annual Wildebeest Migration. Forming the centerpiece of most inaugural Tanzania safari itineraries, the Migration is a mind-blowing display of nature at her most extraordinary. About 2 million wildebeest, zebra and antelope run the gauntlet of predators as they migrate around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. This awe-inspiring event is one of the last mass terrestrial animal movements left on the planet – the herds are so big they can be observed from space!

Go Travel East Africa turned our dream vacation into a reality. The level of professionalism and the unique experiences they curated for us were outstanding. From the breathtaking landscapes to the cultural immersion, it was a journey that left us in awe. Truly an exceptional travel partner!

My score 10/10

Hiking was organized perfectly. We've reached the summit of Mount Kenya and Chief is the best guide on the planet. My score 10/10

I would highly reccomend

Correct information was difficult to find prior to our one week climb of Mt Kenya. We believed we would be able to climb the mountain on our own without a guide and when we showed up in Chogoria we found out the park service would not allow us to proceed. Thankfully we came in to contact with Dunstan and he quickly arranged the services we needed at a reasonable rate, and when we had more complications he assisted the whole time. We also had a wonderful team of porters and guides that I would highly recommend and I'm glad we were lucky enough to have there services.

The Best East African Safari Tours

The Best East African Safari Tours

Ariadne is an Africa expert. She and her husband form a team who author many guidebooks to African countries.

East Africa is home to an incredible number of iconic safari destinations. The Masai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Nakuru National Park … and the list goes on. And then there are the bucket-list highlights, such as gorilla trekking and the wildebeest migration. Making sense of how it all fits together and what can be done on a standard trip can be overwhelming, though. Luckily, SafariBookings has got you covered with a great selection of tours to fit everybody’s needs. Browse our favorite East African safaris to get inspired.

East African Safari Tours

1. Northern Circuit Safari in Tanzania (Including Serengeti)

Wildebeest migration

  • Days : 4 to 7 days
  • Parks : Lake Manyara National Park , Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater

If you’re looking for an action-packed safari with lots of variety, look no further than Tanzania’s Northern circuit. Just a short drive out of the gateway city of Arusha is Lake Manyara National Park, a scenic little gem in the Rift Valley. It’s known for tree-climbing lions, and the birdlife is phenomenal. Next you’ll spend a couple of nights in Serengeti National Park. The endless plains are dotted with big herds of grazers, and predators are never far off. You might also have a chance to see the great migration, Africa’s most impressive wildlife spectacle. On your way back to Arusha, you’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater. The forested crater rim creates a perfect backdrop for all the wildlife drama that unfolds on the crater floor. You’ll see more animals here in one day than you might have thought possible, including the endangered black rhino.

Northern Tanzania Safaris (4 to 7 Days)

2. Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar beach

  • Days : 6 to 14 days
  • Parks : Nyerere (Selous) National Park , Lake Manyara National Park , Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater

Tanzania offers the perfect safari-and-beach combo. Most popular is a safari in Tanzania’s Northern circuit (see above), followed by a tropical Zanzibar beach holiday. The island is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and Stone Town, the historic part of Zanzibar city. There’s plenty to do in Zanzibar. Recommended day trips include snorkeling on colorful offshore coral reefs, and spice tours into the island’s rural interior. Alternatively, for a quick safari add-on to a Zanzibar tour, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is a great option. Here you can pack a lot into a short stay. Activities include game drives, walking safaris and boat cruises on the mighty Rufiji River.

Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar (6 to 14 Days)

3. Masai Mara Safari in Kenya

Great Migration of the Wildebeest, heading out looking for water

  • Days : 3 to 5 days
  • Parks and reserves : Masai Mara National Reserve , Lake Nakuru National Park

For incredible wildlife viewing in a classic African setting, you can’t go wrong with a Masai Mara safari. Come here from August to October and you’ll have a chance to see one of the biggest wildlife spectacles on earth: the great migration. On a 4- or 5-day safari you can make an overnight stop at Lake Nakuru. This scenic Rift Valley lake is known for its incredible birdlife and seasonal flocks of flamingos. It is also a great place to see white and black rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, hippos and a variety of antelope.

Masai Mara Safaris (3 to 5 Days)

4. Kenya Safari & Beach Time

Sunbeds on the beach

  • Parks and reserves : Masai Mara National Reserve , Tsavo West National Park , Tsavo East National Park , Lake Nakuru National Park , Amboseli National Park

Kenya is the perfect destination for a classic bush-and-beach holiday. You’ll spend a couple of days exploring the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. The open savannah is perfect for quality sightings of lions and cheetahs. If you’re lucky you might even see a hunt. You’ll only need a short stay in the beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park to see rhinos and a variety of other wildlife. To round off the safari, you’ll visit Amboseli National Park for inspiring close-ups with elephants and views of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. Time permitting, you can add on a few days in Tsavo (East and West) for a true wilderness experience and a chance to see unusual antelope, such as gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx. Finally you’ll head to the coast to spend a few days relaxing at one of Kenya’s idyllic beaches – the perfect way to end a holiday.

Kenya Safari & Beach (6 to 14 Days)

5. Uganda Safari & Gorilla Trekking

Silverback mountain gorilla

  • Parks : Bwindi Impenetrable National Park , Queen Elizabeth National Park

A Uganda gorilla trekking safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Looking into the eyes of a mountain gorilla isn’t only exhilarating, it’s also deeply moving. After an early breakfast you’ll head out with your ranger into the depths of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a true jungle wonderland. Following the gorillas’ tracks on slippery forest paths can be challenging, but the reward is an hour in the company of these gentle giants. On a 5-day trip you can either end your tour with a few days at Lake Bunyonyi or Queen Elizabeth National Park. The former is best if you want to wind down from your gorilla trek in a pretty spot that’s ideal for walking, swimming and canoeing. The latter if you want to squeeze in a short classic savannah safari with a chance to see elephants, buffalo and even tree-climbing lions.

Uganda Safari & Gorillas (3 to 5 Days)

6. Gorilla & Chimp Trekking in Rwanda

Mountain gorilla family with silverback

  • Parks : Volcanoes National Park , Nyungwe National Park

Walk in the footsteps of world-renowned primatologist Dian Fossey on a Rwanda gorilla trekking safari. You’ll be staying just outside Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains. This is where Dian Fossey first habituated gorillas in the 1960s, and it is arguably still the best place in the world to see these gentle giants. Other activities here include golden monkey trekking, hiking to the original gorilla research camp and, for the very adventurous, summiting one of the Virunga volcanoes. On a 5-day trip you can also include a visit to Nyungwe National Park, one of the most beautiful rainforests in East Africa. A suspended canopy walk offers a unique bird’s eye perspective of the forest environment. You’ll have the opportunity to see several of the 13 primate species present in Nyungwe, including chimpanzees.

Day 1 - Arusha

On arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Arusha (approximately 48 KM / 1 hour).

Established 1894, this hotel is believed to be one of the oldest hotels in East Africa. Here, surrounded by the history of a bygone era, traditional ambience is effortlessly combined with the style and service you want when travelling. The hotel features 106 stylish rooms, Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym and four authentic restaurants and bars. Overlooking the gardens, the Parachichi Restaurant, meaning ‘avocado’ in Swahili, is the perfect place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A terrace overlooking the tropical garden invites to dine alfresco. Take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool and relax at Bustani Pool Bar.

Day 2 - Ngorongoro Crater

Today we depart by road and drive through the Ngorongoro Highlands to your lodge in Karatu, located just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approximately 175 KM / 3.5 hours). (BLD)

Located in the Ngorongoro Highlands, the farm is only a short distance from the Ngorongoro National Park entry gate. 52 spacious chalets are built in the style of an old colonial farm, rustically decorated with local materials, complete with en-suite bathroom. Additional facilities include a swimming pool, outdoor deck, two dining areas and massage facility. The 500 acre working farm on the slopes of the crater features a six acre organic vegetable garden which not only supplies the lodge, but many other lodges and mobile camp operations throughout northern Tanzania. Enjoy fresh roasted coffee from the 15 acre plantation.

Day 3 - Ngorongoro Crater

Enjoy breakfast before descending over 600m down to the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Covering over 250 sq km of land, the Ngorongoro Crater is home to the rare black rhino, lion, elephant, cheetah and great herds of buffalo, antelope and wildebeest, and is one of Africa’s most unbelievable landscapes. Explore the forest and lake areas where you may see flamingos and open savannah. A picnic lunch will be served in the crater, before driving back late afternoon to Ngorongoro Farm House for dinner and overnight. (BLD)

Day 4 - Serengeti National Park

After breakfast we travel to Ol’Duvai Gorge, the site of Louis and Mary Leakey’s renowned archaeological discoveries. Their findings include some of man’s earliest known ancestral remains. Continue on to Tanzania’s abundant Serengeti National Park in time for lunch. This enormous park supports every variety of animal imaginable – from large predators to the smaller herbivores they prey on. Enjoy an afternoon safari in the Serengeti National Park (approximately 200 KM / 4 hours). (BLD) **SEE THE SERENGETI or MASAI MARA FROM ABOVE** Why not pre-book a hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti or Masai Mara? Whilst staying in the Serengeti or Masai Mara you can choose to float above the open savannah for a unique perspective of the wildlife below, with superb photographic opportunities. The flight lasts about an hour and you can celebrate in the traditional manner with champagne on landing. The price starts from AUD$650 per person. Early booking is recommended.

Located in the central Serengeti prime game viewing area, on the lower slopes of Makoma Hill, only 29kms southwest of Seronera airstrip, Serengeti Kuhama Camp offers guests the opportunity to explore many parts of the Serengeti – to the north, west, east, and in the Moru kopjes. The Serengeti Kuhama Camp has a total of 10 guest tents all with views of the Serengeti savannah. Accommodation is provided in spacious walk-in tents which can accommodate three beds (triple), and are furnished with beds made of fine tropical wood, bedside tables, mattresses, blankets, bed sheets and pillows, and all have a wooden floor. Each guest tent has a verandah with two safari chairs and a safari table allowing you to relax with a book, or just enjoy the different scents, sights and sounds around you.

Day 5 - Serengeti National Park

Experience the Serengeti National Park in full colour and sound during an entire day spent on game drives through the park (picnic lunch included). (BLD)

Day 6 - Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast depart for Lake Manyara, a mineral lake in the basin of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Lunch is taken at Kirurumu Tented Lodge, followed by an afternoon game drive in the park, the home of the so-called ‘tree-climbing lions’. Apart from the varied types of landscape including forest, swamp and savannah, Lake Manyara National Park supports a large variety of animals including giraffe, zebra, elephant, hippos, monkeys and a large variety of birdlife (approximately 225 KM / 5 hours). (BLD)

Kirurumu Manyara Lodge is located on the edge of Lake Manyara National Park about a 30 minute drive from Manyara Airstrip and about 2 hours from Arusha. In total there are 27 tented rooms, 2 honeymoon suites and 2 family cottages all of which are tented and raised slightly off the ground with a wooden decking, of which each has an amazing view of the Great Rift Valley of Lake Manyara National Park.

Day 7 - Amboseli National Park

After breakfast depart Lake Manyara for Arusha and continue to the border crossing into Kenya and on to Amboseli (approximately 355 KM / 7 hours). (BLD)

Elerai is located in a quiet, unspoilt, unique setting on a 5,000 acres private conservation area 12kms south east of Amboseli National Park at the foot of Africa’s largest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro. The camp looks over Amboseli National Park and Mt Kilimanjaro, giving you what is arguably the best location of any camp in the area. The camp offers 12 tents and 5 suites. Each tent has its own en-suite bathroom with solar hot showers and a toilet with a view. Raised cedar wood floors, acacia poles and makuti (thatch) roofing complement the surrounding environment. Large balconies with relaxing day beds combine to offer the perfect place to lie as you take in the ambiance when relaxing. The elegantly furnished suite rooms have large sliding doors that open out onto your own private veranda overlooking the plains below and Amboseli National Park. Elephants, giraffe’s and zebra are seen most days from the comfort of your room. Designed using natural rock and acacia wood, the bathrooms have their own naturally crafted bathtub and shower which is unique to Elerai.

Day 8 - Amboseli National Park

It is set on an elevation surrounded by two streams. Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge is nestled along the Lion Hill overlooking the spectacular flamingo pink rimmed Lake Nakuru. Its location affords panoramic views of the lake and the picturesque Lake Nakuru National Park. A short two-hour drive from Nairobi, Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge is a favourite with residents and visitors to Kenya. Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge is cleverly laid out in such a way that most rooms and sitting areas afford stunning views of the lake and the park. The Lodge incorporates natural landscaping with tall acacia trees, winding walkways and greens dotted with bird feeds.

Day 13 - End of Highlights of East Africa Tour

Today you will return by road to Nairobi for lunch at the famous Carnivore Restaurant and end of safari (approximately 184 KM / 3 hours). (BL)

End of the Highlights of East Africa Tour

My wife and I recently did Highlights of East Africa, followed immediately by Historical Jordan, with Bench. Both tours were excellent! The organisation was first class and almost all the hotels were very good, with an interesting range of properties across both tours. The guides were very good indeed and the way the tours were managed on the ground was outstanding. We had a wonderful holiday and would recommend Bench to anyone thinking of doing tours like this. The only minor negative was the appallingly bad and inefficient service (in the restaurant and in Reception) at an otherwise beautiful property - the Sopa Lake Nakuru.

Knowledgeable and Professional

We recently visited Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. Bench were recommended by friends and we worked with Steph to organise our trip. Right from the outset her knowledge of travel in Africa and her professionalism were outstanding. Her suggestions, recommendations and travel tips were spot on and made our trip an amazing experience. For example Steph suggested we visit the Gorillas in Rwanda early in our trip. If you are unwell at the time you wish to make the trek, you may not be allowed to visit the gorilla group (to protect them from human diseases). Another factor was that the treks (we did two) can be quite difficult and with our energy levels high early in the trip it was certainly better than attempting the treks after two or three weeks of travelling. The tours, lodges and tented camps Steph included in our itinerary made for a variety of excellent game viewing and experiences. Also, on one occasion we had a flight cancelled (not booked by Bench) which disrupted our travel plans prior to picking up a tour that Bench had booked. We contacted the Bench "help desk" and they promptly and professionally contacted the tour and transfer companies as well as our hotel for the night to update them on our delayed arrival. In summary, we would highly recommend Steph and Bench for any travel in Africa and wouldn't hesitate to use them again in future.

East Africa Safari/Victoria Falls

Easy company to deal with. Safari was excellent, fantastic sights. Road travel challenging but more than made up for by great accommodation. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful guides. This was a great trip.

THE ONLY WAY TO GO!

Fantastic experience from the booking all the way through to returning home!

Had the best time in Tanzania and …

Had the best time in Tanzania and Kenya. From first speaking with Maria about a year ago to getting home safe and sound and very happy with our experience. The guides the accommodation the animals the people, everything was more than we expected.

Tanzania, Kenya, Victoria Falls and South Africa, absolutely AMAZING!

We booked and chose our African experience through our local travel agent. After perusing all the booklets and catalogues available on Africa, Bench International had by far the more comprehensive trips and covered exactly what we were looking for. They covered a variety of levels of accommodation, sights and tour sizes. We were looking for small group, personalised safari's staying in secure accommodation along with a self-drive garden route finish within our budget. Bench put together the most amazing 5 weeks of our lives in August/September this year, covering our total wish list and more. They then provided ALL the information possible in a travel booklet including our itinerary, country information, approximately what amount of money we would require, tipping advice etc that we used like a bible on a daily basis. We started our trip in Arusha where we arrived at lunch time and had the afternoon to spare. Our Bench advisor 'Charles' who met at us our Hotel after being collected from the airport by our first tour guide 'Edwin', advised us not to leave the secured grounds of our accommodation. At our disappointment of being stuck in a room all afternoon (after 5 flights from Australia over the previous 2 days) Charles went over and beyond our expectations and arranged for a friend to come and collect us and take us for a 31/2 hour walk through Arusha and experience the local people and markets, then onto the local Tanzanite museum. We felt very secure in his company and had the most amazing insight into this city that would otherwise never have been available to us. The next morning 'Edwin' began our 7 day, Tanzanian part of the '12 day Highlights of East Africa' tour including Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti N/P & Lake Manyara N/P. Bench matched us perfectly with another couple of similar age and personality to make our small group tour extremely enjoyable - and found us new life long friends. Edwin had over 10 years experience as a tour guide and was extremely knowledgeable and could not do enough for us before leaving us at the Kenyan border for 'Freddie' our next very experienced tour guide. Freddie took us on to Amboseli N/P, Masai Mara Game Reserve, Lake Nakuru & Nairobi. By the time Freddie completed our Highlights of East Africa tour, we had seen ALL of the Big 5, some several times over! This included a Lioness killing a Warthog, Leopard attack on Gazelle, mating Rhino's & Lions, many Elephants and Buffalo on a daily basis - ALL at very close range. AMAZING! From here we flew to Zimbabwe for 4 days at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. We are so glad Bench offered the extra optional activities of a Helicopter flight over Victoria Falls & the Zambezi River which gives a whole different appreciation of this landscape from the sky; Elephant Back Safari and Lion encounter which gave us very personal time learning about these amazing animals and walking/riding with them through their natural environment and not in caged areas. From here we flew to Cape Town and on our own began a 12 day self-drive Garden Route trip. With a suggestion list from Bench we explored Cape Town, the Winelands and the garden route up to Port Elizabeth. Our hire car & accommodation once again was perfectly arranged to our taste and budget. During our trip we stayed in top hotels, tented lodges and on a coffee farm. All this accommodation was immaculate, well presented and many provided 3 meals a day including a packed lunch box on the days we were on Safari drives. At no time on our tour did we feel unsecure as our guides were local people with great local knowledge. Everything went perfectly to plan with our very experienced tour guides Edwin and Freddie offering over and above what we expected. We would highly recommend Bench International to anyone and if we were ever to return to these beautiful countries would never travel with anyone else. Thank you Bench and your tour staff for a once in a lifetime most amazing holiday to Africa. Rob & Carleen Hargreaves, Queensland

What are the best African safari destinations for different types of travelers?

Every African safari destination offers unique experiences, so the best one for you will depend on what you’re looking for. Here are some recommendations based on different types of travelers:

  • First-timers: The Serengeti in Tanzania is a great option for those new to safari adventures. It offers a classic African safari experience with a variety of wildlife and stunning landscapes.
  • Safari buffs: Etosha National Park in Namibia is a must-visit for those who are passionate about wildlife. Its large salt pan is surrounded by diverse habitats that attract a wide range of animals.
  • Families: Kruger National Park in South Africa is an ideal destination for families with children. The park offers a variety of family-friendly accommodations and activities, including guided tours and game drives.

  • Couples: The Okavango Delta Panhandle in Botswana offers a romantic and secluded safari experience. It is a great place to explore the waterways by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) and enjoy intimate wildlife encounters.

Is Kenya or South Africa better for Safari?

If you’re looking to explore unique landscapes and observe wildlife, both South Africa and Kenya are ideal destinations. South Africa is particularly family-friendly, offering malaria-free reserves and delicious culinary experiences. Meanwhile, Kenya affords a greater variety of wildlife and the opportunity to visit multiple National Parks. For those seeking a perfect combination of safari and sun, Mombasa beach awaits!

Which is the best month to go on a safari holiday?

Generally speaking, the months from June to October and January to March offer the perfect opportunity to go on a marvelous African safari holiday. Though, of course, the exact details of your journey may vary depending on the wildlife park you choose and the experiences you are seeking. For the utmost expert guidance in planning your vacation, it is best to speak with our Africa specialists.

An Introvert’s Guide: Where to Travel in July to Avoid Crowds

For anyone wondering where to travel in July to avoid crowds, we have a diverse list for adventurers of all ages.

Hayley Hynes • Jun 6, 2024

east african tours

Time flies faster than normal in the summer, so if you’re typically one to leave making plans to the last minute, there’s no time like the present to figure out where you want to get away this year. It’s not too late for you to book a vacation to one of our planet’s many beautiful destinations next month – especially if you prefer visiting spots that aren’t already heavily populated by locals and tourists. For anyone wondering where to travel in July to avoid crowds, we have a diverse list for adventurers of all ages seeking unique experiences.

Mozambique, East Africa

Mozambique’s sunshine in July isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you can handle the heat , you’ll love the experiences that await you in the East African country. While they continue to recover from decades of civil war, locals have been welcoming curious tourists and introducing them to the wildlife who reside in the “Lost Eden” of Gorongosa National Park. Visitors can partake in a safari experience, or if aquatic animals are more your speed, visit the nearby Bazaruto archipelago islands to do some marine diving on the quiet beaches .

Byron Bay, Australia

Where to Travel in July to Avoid Crowds pictured: Byron Bay, Australia

In the southern hemisphere, things Down Under are much quieter in the month of July as winter takes over. Those who spent Australia’s summer surfing and tanning in Byron Bay are long gone by then, but little do they know some of the hidden gems in the area get even better when the weather gets cold. It’s an ideal time for whale watching, hiking, touring local farms and exploring the rainforest – all with much less risk of heat stroke.

Laughlin, Nevada

Where to Travel in July to Avoid Crowds pictured: Laughlin, Nevada

Nevada is a popular vacation spot mostly because of the shenanigans taking place in Sin City, but that’s not the only area in America’s desert worth exploring. If you want to head to Las Vegas without being caught up in the craze on the Strip, consider staying in Laughlin, which is about 100 miles south of the adult playground. It boasts similar hot temperatures, but without the crowds and noise you’ll find in hotels. You can also get a taste of the outdoors with activities like fishing, hiking and kayaking when you need a break from gambling and shopping.

Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy

Where to Travel in July to Avoid Crowds pictured: Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy

If our suggestions so far haven’t answered your question of where to travel in July, perhaps a EuroTrip might be the solution. It’s no secret that Italy has become one of the most Instagrammable travel destinations, but there are still some hidden gems throughout the country that aren’t overrun by guests. One of them is Santa Margherita Ligure, a former fishing village that’s comparable to the Amalfi Coast. It’s about 22 miles southeast of Genoa and connected to the city by regional train service. You can spend your days relaxing at the various beaches, dining on delicious local pizza and pasta or taking in the colorful views while walking on authentic cobblestone paths.

Coronet Peak, New Zealand

For any winter sports lovers, New Zealand’s Coronet Peak is a great option for July travel. The park is located on the country’s South Island and is the oldest ski field in the area. Locals are known for being bold and adventurous, so it makes sense that NZ is the birthplace of bungee jumping, though people also like to try out zip-lining and heli-skiing. If you’re not one to hit the slopes, you can still check out views on a gondola ride, which allows you to reach the top of the mountain on foot.

Newfoundland, Canada

Where to Travel in July to Avoid Crowds pictured: Newfoundland, Canada

It’s not as tropical as some of the islands your friends are flying to this summer. Still, Newfoundland is a stunning destination off the coast of Canada that’s worth considering as you wonder where to travel in July. The province’s capital city, St. John’s, will capture your heart from the moment you fly in, with its colorful houses and historic architecture. You’ll want to wear layers as the weather isn’t known for being hot, but the kind folks all over (and the adorable puffins) will make you forget about the rain, drizzle and fog rolling in. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, small towns like Trinity, Ferryland and Twillingate will happily welcome you to their water-side communities.

Folegandros, Greece

Where to Travel in July to Avoid Crowds pictured: Folegandros, Greece

In Greece, the Cyclades island of Folegandros is a prime spot to explore Europe without feeling overcrowded. The main town’s population is under 800, and locals provide boat rides from the beaches there to secluded coves where you can swim in the Aegean Sea. The first ultra-luxe resort in the area is Gundari , which sits on 80 acres of property. Suites there have private pools and the resort spoils patrons with a spa experience taking inspiration from the ancient Greeks.

Bolivia, South America

Where to Travel in July to Avoid Crowds pictured: Bolivia, South America

Bolivia is located in central South America, and is the only landlocked country on the continent; this is partially what makes it a standout if you’re contemplating where to travel in July. Many tourists flock to areas that are near water this time of year, but you can still have a great time without being by the ocean. The middle of summer welcomes occasional rain showers in Bolivia, but you can expect mostly clear skies. Outdoorsy travelers have fun options like climbing and bike riding to keep them busy, or local attractions like La Glorieta Castle and Salar de Uyuni (pictured above) are big hits too.

7 Detroit tours that tell a deeper story of the city: What to know

A s a little boy, about 8 years old with his brown hair spiked in the late ‘90s style, Gabriel Gutierrez would take his brother’s hand and cross the street from his parents’ tortilla business, enter a heavenly smelling donut shop, pass the lively store patrons, and order a coffee for his mom or their employees.

For himself, he’d order a white cream Long John, somewhat like an éclair, just to eat the cream.

These days, Gutierrez owns that hand-cut donut shop, Donut Villa, in southwest Detroit, which has ties not only to his personal history but that of his family, whose first southwest Detroit business opened in the 1940s. It is part of the greater fabric of community histories that make up Detroit’s story, as told by the City Institute on one of their "Detroit in Context Learning Journey" tours.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The City Institute is one of a number of organizations to offer tours that go a bit deeper than sightseeing and basic headlines in Detroit. The groups seek to give context to where Detroit is now, where it is going, and often to correct the record on where it’s been.

Some tours explore the once prominent Black Bottom neighborhood, some explore Detroit’s history with the Underground Railroad, some explore Corktown, and ones like the City Institute’s "Learning Journey" also bring the city’s story forward to today and look to the future.

Though not a definitive list of all the tours in Detroit, here are some tour groups and guides to help deepen your knowledge:

City Institute

The "Learning Journey," on which Gutierrez’s business was featured , is a yearly, all-day bus tour that goes neighborhood by neighborhood so that attendees can hear from business owners, investors, and nonprofit and city leaders on the history of the neighborhoods, what’s currently offered there, how it supports itself, and future projects. A shorter version of the tour is also offered, primarily for private tour groups.

The City Institute’s mission is to equip residents and stakeholders to build an inclusive, equitable and thriving future for Detroit. Southwest, with its shifting demographics over the last century, is just one neighborhood that can serve as a foundation for those seeking to understand the city a bit better, said Gutierrez.

“There's a lot of history and a lot of stories,” Gutierrez said of the city. “Not always great, right? And for people to just understand that the communities that they are involved with, they have extensive roots and histories of their own that can provide context.”

Learning the city’s wins also encourages retention and keeps energy to fight for Detroit’s future, by the telling of Jeanette Pierce, founder and president of the City Institute.

“We believe it's important for people to understand how we got to where we are … then come to today, where we actually meet and hear about and talk to people doing amazing work in the city,” said Pierce.

Black Scroll Network History & Tours

Jamon Jordan, Detroit’s first official historian, was appointed to his role in 2021 by Mayor Mike Duggan. Before that, however, he was already known as a prominent unofficial historian of the city, founding the Black Scroll Network History & Tours.

While Jordan said he encourages folks to do the tours that exist on restaurants, bars, the auto industry and the like, he said he realized they were leaving out a big part of the Detroit story – African American history.

On his various tours, Jordan may point out the neighborhood where three Detroit music legends grew up or talk about the presence of Black people in the region in 1700s. Some tours also explore the once thriving Black neighborhood and business district that were destroyed through racist officials, urban renewal and highway building , with Jordan pointing out the still present apartments, townhouses and school building that were given the space instead.

“A big portion of Detroit’s history is invisible, and you have to have someone help you see what is no longer present,” he said.

  • Topics: Motown, slavery, African origins, Black Bottom, the Underground Railroad, the 1967 rebellion and more
  • Cost: Generally $5 - $50 for walking tours, $60 per person for bus tours, and $50 for virtual tours
  • Length: 2 hours for most
  • Mode of transportation: Walking, bus and virtual
  • Where to register: Black Scroll Network's Eventbrite page for public tours, and [email protected] or blackscrollnetwork.weebly.com for private tours

Wheelhouse Detroit

Another way to get a deeper knowledge of the city? By bike.

Wheelhouse Detroit is a bike shop along Detroit’s riverfront, but tours have been a part of its mission since its opening in 2008 thanks to owner Kelli Kavanaugh and her founding partner’s backgrounds in community development.

“It was important for us to tell a story of Detroit that isn’t necessarily the one that the masses hear or understand to be true,” she said, later adding: “We’re not cheerleaders, we’re trying to tell a real story of a very interesting and complicated city.”

This story includes discussion of history and current developments. On the Corktown tour she gives, Kavanaugh delves into how freeway development, urban renewal, and parking for Tiger Stadium shaped the neighborhood as it is now, along with gentrification there. She also uses history to counter any belief that it only got “cool” now.

  • Topics: Poletown churches, Eastern Market, Hamtramck, the auto industry, techno and more.
  • Cost: $30 for shorter, weekday tours ($40 including bike rental), $45 for 3-hour tours ($55 with rental) and private tours starting at $200-$250 for up to six people.
  • Length: 2 hours for shorter, weekday tours, 3 hours for others
  • Mode of transportation: “Pedal power,” using bikes or e-bikes, used manually. Attendees can bring bikes or rent from Wheelhouse Detroit
  • Where to register: wheelhousedetroit.com

Ken Coleman

As a Detroit historian, journalist and communications professional, Ken Coleman likes to say he’s been dedicated to chronicling Black life in Detroit since 1991.

His extensive historical knowledge goes back way further, of course, and it’s his passion to share Black history as an independent tour guide, covering whatever topics in that area a client may want.

Some favorite stops include the Gateway to Freedom International Memorial along the Detroit riverfront which pays homage to those who used and were involved in the Underground Railroad . There’s also the Second Baptist Church of Detroit, which lays claim to being the oldest religious institution owned by the Black community in the Midwest, a former station on the Underground Railroad and establishing the city’s first school for Black children.

  • Topics: Motown, the Underground Railroad, Black Bottom and more
  • Cost: Prices starting at about $50 per hour per small group, and generally $300-$500 for a 3-4 hour tour for a larger organization
  • Length: 1-2 hours for walking tours, 3-4 for bus tours
  • Mode of transportation: Walking or bus, if provided
  • Where to register: Email Coleman at [email protected] or call him at 313-551-1304

Preservation Detroit

Preservation Detroit was founded in 1975 as a student organization fighting the demolition of historic campus buildings at Wayne State University. These days the group works to preserve historic sites throughout Detroit, and it hosts tours on the history of architecture, sculptures and more to educate the masses.

A high point of downtown tour coordinator Davis Zaleski’s walking excursion is a visit to the Guardian Building, the 1920s, cathedral-like, Art Deco skyscraper. There’s also a quick stop by the recently reopened 38-story, Italian Renaissance-style Book Tower.

“During the early part of the 20th century, with the advent of the auto industry and all the other industries, they built like crazy and they built some of the most beautiful buildings in the country,” Zaleski said.

Some of that history has been torn down or poorly developed, but preservation has increased over the years, Zaleski said. Preservation Detroit likes to emphasize good development, and Zaleski said he hopes attendees walk away with an appreciation for what Detroit was and could be.

  • Topics: Ferry Street, Midtown, Eastern Market, downtown, public art, cemeteries, churches and more
  • Cost: $15 for members, students and seniors; $18 for all others on public tours; private tours, per the website, can be arranged for $100 for groups of five people or less and rates of $20 per person for larger groups
  • Length: Between 2 and 2.5 hours
  • Mode of transportation: Walking
  • Where to register: preservationdetroit.org or through Eventbrite

Detroit History Tours

Detroit History Tours, along with the Detroit History Club, serves several purposes, said Bailey Sisoy-Moore, executive director of the two. Key among its motivations are the ideas that Detroit’s history should be written by Detroiters and that it’s hard to defund or vote to implode historic sites that are fully understood.

“History education helps make sure that the important parts of our history don't disappear quietly,” Sisoy-Moore said.

The tour group tells the history of the city starting with the Native American tribes that were here first through to present day and even future development plans.

  • Topics: Suffragettes, the Detroit People Mover transit system, cops and mobsters, LGBTQ history and more
  • Cost: $27 for walking tours, $30-$65 for bus tours, $5 - $20 for self-guided mobile app tours with lifetime download; food tours are $80 - $120, including the meals and tips. Private tours start at $250 if transportation is provided, $450 for walking and $1,525 for tours with the van or bus provided by Detroit History Tours.
  • Length: 2 hours for walking tours, 90 minutes to 3.5 hours for bus tours
  • Where to register: detroithistorytours.com

Detroit Historical Society

Founded in 1921, the Detroit Historical Society now boasts tours at not only the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, but also at locations throughout metro Detroit.

Guided tours at the historical museum take groups of 15 or more people through the indigenous populations that were here, auto history, culture and more, said Kimmie Dobos, manager of education and public programs. There are also tailored museum tours that dive deeper into the African American experience and what led to the 1967 rebellion.

The Great Lakes museum, on Belle Isle, also features a maritime history tour exploring Detroit’s long history on the water from canoes to freighters and more.

For some off-site explorations, there are “Behind The Scenes” tours of historic locations including neighborhoods, a gallery, and a battlefield.

  • Topics: The summer of 1967, Temple Beth El, Boston Edison, Eastern Market, tiny homes and more
  • Cost: Guided tours at the museums are $11 for adults and $10 for seniors, the 1967 rebellion tour is $12 for adults and $11 for seniors, and the “Detroit’s African American Perspectives” tour with Jamon Jordan is $300 for up to 20 people.“Behind The Scenes” tours are $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers.
  • Length: Generally 1- 1.5 hours
  • Where to register: detroithistorical.org

Of course, these are just some of the tour offerings in the city. You also can see the sights with a Segway tour , by boat and there’s even a tour to learn some Detroit history on a historic bar tour , among others.

To The East: Rik Freeman

Education & Community Engagement, Exhibitions & Events

Photographs of murals by Rik Freeman are part of To the East: The Rise of Murals East of the River (on view at Phillips@THEARC through February 8, 2024). Curated by Cory Lee Stowers, Executive Director of DC Murals, To the East reveals important context to the purpose and practice of mural-making in Washington, DC, and beyond. The Phillips Collection Fellow, Arianna Adade, met with Rik Freeman to discuss his background.

Rik Freeman in his studio

Rik Freeman, a pioneering mural artist, made a name for himself for one of his earliest murals of Marvin Gaye in Washington, DC . Completed in 1993, this mural at the intersection of U Street & 13th Street NW, in the vibrant corridor formerly known as “Black Broadway,” holds special importance as people often forget that Marvin Gaye is a DC native, and also features DC native Duke Ellington. Freeman’s artworks are more than just creative expressions; they serve as educational resources, centered on hundreds of years of Black history.

Rik Freeman's mural on the Douglas Recreation Center, 1990

Rik Freeman was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. Growing up in the South, he went to a segregated school and didn’t attend an integrated school until the fourth grade. He recalls his first attempt with art when he was around 10 or 11 years old, drawing a Hank Aaron portrait on his wall. As a child, he was always  sketching but didn’t think of it as a career until high school when he had a Black art teacher. A quiet child who would often get reprimanded for drawing during class, his art teacher allowed him to freely create and experiment with art, invoking his passion for the arts. Freeman attended Savannah State University where he studied fine art, and it wasn’t until his 20s when he was introduced to mural art. He relocated to DC when he was 29 years old and after battling several obstacles such as losing his father, his job, and going through a break-up, Freeman decided to start taking art seriously. In 1989, he completed his first mural with DC Artworks and has been making a living as an artist ever since.

Multiple works by Freeman in his studio

Freeman’s work is deeply rooted in his Southern identity and molded by the rich history of the African diaspora. Freeman’s artistic motivations are diverse; he specifically illustrates blues music in his Blues series, with which he grew up, but also hip-hop and rock. Earth, Wind & Fire, Jimi Hendrix, and The Monkees have all influenced his art. What defines Freeman’s approach lies in his decision to paint murals in working-class communities around the DMV area, emphasizing the importance of everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status, in molding history.

Rik Freeman's Studio

Freeman settled permanently in DC after purchasing his home in Deanwood, in Northeast, with his wife. From the outside, his house may seem homely and simple. However, the back tells a different story. Surrounded by beautifully manicured ponds and gardens lies Freeman’s home studio. The gorgeous brick building, covered in lively vines, bolsters large windows throughout, giving an abundance of natural light to the space. The studio harbors dozens of Freeman’s artworks throughout the decades, showing his progression not just as an art, but also as an individual. His beautiful studio often serves as a safe haven for his creative expression and a foundation for his artistic storytelling. Rather than focusing primarily on iconic Black figures, Freeman’s artistic storytelling has also taken a different path. He purposefully emphasizes the importance of ordinary people in the Black community, highlighting their role in developing and influencing leaders. Through his murals, Freeman hopes to highlight the vital role of everyday individuals in the rich fabric of Black history and culture.  “A book, you can close it. But a painting, you have to see”
