Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Mystery Island Tours Guide

Animal Crossing New Horizons Mystery Island Tours

While most of your time in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is spent on your very own (previously) deserted island or the islands of your friends, you can also explore other deserted islands. These islands might seem random, but there are actually 20 different setups, each with its own vegetation, fish, bugs, and more. Here at iMore, we have everything you need to know about Mystery Island Tours.

New Villagers?

Animal Crossing New Horizons Mystery Island Tours

In addition to all the resources offered by Mystery Tour Islands, you can also recruit new villagers for your island on these tours. While you start with two villagers , to fill up your island, you need to convince others to move there. You can do this using Amiibo at your campsite, or if you don't happen to have a stack of Amiibo at your disposal, you can find them on Mystery Islands. So long as you have an open spot for a new villager, there is a chance that one will be on the island when you arrive for your tour. If you talk to them enough, they will be convinced to move to your island.

There are twenty different setups for Mystery Islands. While islands with the same layout will have relatively similar contents and spawns, they are all unique in that once you leave an island, you can never return. If you leave things behind, they are gone forever. There are some tools you will want to have on every island, as well as materials and fruit you might want on certain islands. Because of the random nature of the islands, it's best to bring everything you might need. If you find yourself on an island with especially valuable spawns, you can always leave behind tools or materials for the extra space.

Starter Islands

Normal islands, islands that require an upgraded resident services.

There are only four islands that show up for a player's first Mystery Island Tour. While each of these islands can show up after the first tour, none of the other islands can show up for the first tour. Fans have named these four islands (as well as all the other islands) as they have no official names:

  • Spiral River Island : This island is flat with no hills and has a river that forms a spiral. It has a 9% chance of showing up outside of the starter island.
  • Short River Island (#1) : This island has a second level with the start of its river. The river forms a waterfall and then flows out to sea. It has a 9% chance of showing up outside of the starter island.
  • Short River Island (#2) : This island is almost identical to the first short river island, but it also has a pond. It has a 9% chance of showing up outside of the starter island.
  • "Fidget Spinner" Island : Dubbed "Fidget Spinner" by fans because of the resemblance of its lake to the popular toy, this island has no river. It has a small, second level, but not much else of interest. This island has a 9% chance of appearing outside of the starter island.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Mystery Island Tours

The next set of islands can all show up at any point after the first tour:

  • Bamboo Island : The most common island you can find, this island has a 10% chance of showing up. It is entirely flat with no hills whatsoever. It has a few palm trees on the beach, but no other trees. Instead, it has bamboo, and it's the only place where you can get it. In addition to several fully grown bamboo plants, there will also be digging spots where you can dig up bamboo sprouts. Bamboo sprouts can be eaten like fruit, as well as planted to grow new bamboo plants. If you planned ahead and brought some fruit along with you, you can also uproot several of the grown plants to take home to your island.
  • Mountain Island : This island shows up 9% of the time and has three tiers, no rivers or ponds, and many fruit trees. It also has five rocks where pill bugs and centipedes spawn.
  • Sister Fruit Island : This island shows up 9% of the time and has 19 fruit trees. The fruit here, known as your sister fruit, will be the same type of fruit that the player's mother sent early on in the game.
  • Waterfall Island : This island has a 5% chance of showing up and is covered with hills and waterfalls. It is good for farming fish that show up at high elevations, and at river mouths.
  • Trash Island : This island has a 5% chance of showing up and spawns no fish. Instead, only trash can be caught here. Lots of water-related bugs also spawn here, like dragonflies.
  • Curly River Island : This island shows up 5 % of the time and only spawns water-related bugs. It has an elevated area with a waterfall and a river that curls around the island before feeding out into the ocean.
  • Scorpion/Tarantula Island : This rare island shows up just 2% of the time, and can only appear once per day. It is entirely flat, with no hills whatsoever. There is a narrow stream that you can cross without a vaulting pole, and the only bug that spawns on this island are either tarantulas or scorpions, depending on the time of year. This island will only appear between 7 PM and 4 AM, as that's the only time when these bugs spawn.
  • Hybrid Flower Island : This rare island only shows up 2% of the time and can only show up once a day. The flowers here are all hybrid flowers, and the bugs are only the ones attracted to those flowers.
  • Big Fish Island (#2) : This rare island only shows up 2% of the time and can only show up once a day. The only fish that show up here are size four or larger. It has a single raised area which has a pair of waterfalls. The waterfalls form a river that circles a smaller island, before leading back out to the sea.
  • Hardwood Tree Island (#2) : This rare island only shows up 1% of the time and can only show up once per day. The layout is like Bamboo Island, but instead of bamboo, it only has hardwood trees. the only bugs that spawn here are those associated with hardwood trees, such as stags, beetles, and walking sticks.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Mystery Island Tours

The last set of islands will only show up after you've upgraded Resident Services :

  • Money Rock Island (standard) : This island shows up 5% of the time, and has a huge river which can only be vaulted in a single spot blocked off by a rock. Breaking that rock in a single blow will yield 8,000 Bells. After vaulting to the center island, there are five more money rocks. In total, this island can yield 88,500 Bells.
  • Money Rock Island (rare) : This island only shows up 2% of the time and can only show up once per day. It has no river or ponds, but there are four small cliffs, one in each corner. The ground is covered with money rocks and flowers.
  • Finned Fish Island : This is an exceptionally rare island with only a 1% chance of showing up, and even then, it can only show up between June and September. The only fish that spawn around this island are finned fish (Ocean Sunfish, Suckerfish, and sharks.) As such, no fish will spawn in the river, even with bait.
  • Big Fish Island (#1) : This rare island only shows up 3% of the time and can only appear once per day. Like Big Fish Island #2, only fish size four or larger will spawn here. It also has hybrid flowers and the bugs that those flowers attract.
  • Hardwood Tree Island (#1) : This rare island only shows up 2% of the time and only once per day. It has no rivers or ponds, but three cliff areas. The only trees that grow here are hardwood trees, and the only bugs that spawn here are those associated with hardwood trees, such as stags, beetles, and walking sticks.
  • Gold Rock Island : This is one of the rarest islands, only showing up 1% of the time, and only once per day. This island has a smaller island at the center, surrounded by a river too wide to vault save for a single spot. The center island has a single rock that will produce up to nine gold nuggets when struck. The only bugs that spawn here are tarantulas or scorpions, depending on the time of year.

mystery island tour guide

The Mystery Island Tour is a leisure activity in Animal Crossing: New Horizons operated by Dodo Airlines. The tour can be embarked on in exchange for a Nook Miles Ticket by speaking to Orville at the airport . Each tour brings the participant to a random deserted island, known as a Mystery Island , where they can harvest materials for crafting and catch rare bugs and fish . They also may find fossils , DIY recipes inside Message Bottles , and villagers if there is an empty plot on the player's island.

Characteristics [ edit ]

After paying a Nook Miles Ticket to Orville, the player will be transported to the island in a seaplane piloted by Wilbur , who will remain stationed on the dock for the duration of the tour. Once the player leaves to go home the island can never be revisited as, according to Wilbur, the map with the island's coordinates is destroyed for security reasons. In actuality, the islands are randomly generated from templates each time they are visited and deleted once the player leaves, so care must be taken to ensure no wanted items are left behind as they will be permanently lost. The player is free to do as they wish on the island as any changes will not affect future island visits.

Various tools are necessary in order to fully explore the islands and harvest their resources, though each island contains a Simple DIY Workbench in case the player needs to make their own while on tour. If the player cannot obtain the resources needed to make tools, they can purchase tools from Wilbur in exchange for Nook Miles . A vaulting pole and a ladder are the most crucial tools to have, as much of the islands are entirely inaccessible without these tools.

There are 20 archetypes in all for the Mystery Islands (with five missing in the game's data), some of which are much rarer to experience than others. Every island always contains a dock, a Simple DIY Workbench for crafting , rocks and beaches on the left and right sides containing palm trees and shells . Many of the islands will contain flowers , which is either the native flower or the sister flower of the player's island. There's a 30% chance that a message bottle may be found washed ashore in the sand, in addition to a 30% chance for a fossil to be buried. Each island that features regular non- fruit -bearing trees will have a least one that contains a Wasp 's Nest and one with a furniture leaf. The fruit-bearing trees bear the same fruit as the player's island, with the exception of one island that bears the sister fruit.

Tourists [ edit ]

mystery island tour guide

Potential villagers can appear when visiting the tour islands, and they can be asked to move to the player's own island as a resident. Initially these villagers will always be either lazy , normal or peppy ; once a villager of a given type has been invited, only villagers of the remaining type(s) will appear. Should a tourist be invited to become a resident, they will not move to the island until 3 new housing plots are prepared for Tom Nook .

Tourists will stop appearing on the islands from this point until Resident Services is upgraded into a building and the campsite is built. The player will then be able to purchase housing plots to place around town. From this point, villagers of every personality will begin appearing on the islands, if and only if an open plot is available (including if a plot is opened up by a villager moving away).

The villager that appears on a mystery island is determined randomly by choosing which species it will generate, then randomly choosing one of the villagers from that species. This makes octopus villagers, with only four in New Horizons , more common than a multitudinous species, such as cats , with 23 representatives. Once invited, the villager will occupy the oldest-placed housing plot the next day.

Types of Mystery Islands [ edit ]

Short river and pond [ edit ].

Mystery Island 0 NH.jpg

Chance: 9.68%

Emotion Curiosity NH Icon.png

Internal name

mystery island tour guide

A fairly ordinary island with a pond in the south-west corner and a river flowing from a pond on top of a cliff in the north to a mouth in the east. Three rocks can be found on the lowest level, and one on the raised section.

Short river [ edit ]

Mystery Island 1 NH.jpg

Very similar to the previous island, but without the pond and a somewhat wider upper level. Three rocks can be found on the lowest level, and one on the raised section.

Spiral [ edit ]

Mystery Island 2 NH.jpg

The river on this island follows a spiral pattern, with rocks arranged around different points of the spiral. Despite the unusual layout, there is nothing special about the island. The flowers and fruit-bearing trees on this island are the same as the ones native to the player's home.

Fidget spinner [ edit ]

Mystery Island 4 NH.jpg

A small island with a large fidget spinner-shaped pond on the right half of the island, and a small raised cliff area in the upper left corner. Four rocks can be found in each corner.

Mountain [ edit ]

Mystery Island 6 NH.jpg

An island containing three levels of elevation. A ring of fruit trees surrounds the top-most cliffs, atop which many flowers and five rocks can be found. These rocks have a higher than normal chance to generate ore when hit, and may also spawn a Pill Bug or Centipede .

Money rocks [ edit ]

Mystery Island 7 NH.jpg

A island containing a large ring-shaped pond, forming an islet in the center. Fruit trees and flowers surround the pond. The islet contains 5 rocks, all of which will dispense Bells when struck with a shovel or axe . The only way to pole vault across is on a tiny strip of land at the back of the island that juts out towards it. A money rock blocks the way and must be destroyed (by eating fruit) to cross.

Bamboo [ edit ]

Mystery Island 8 NH.jpg

Chance: 9.85%

A small square island covered entirely in Bamboo . Bamboo Shoot s can be found buried next to the stalks.

Fruit orchard [ edit ]

Mystery Island 10 NH.jpg

Chance: 10.15%

A somewhat wide island with a small raised section to the north, and a river that flows down and exits to the west. The island is covered with 19 fruit trees bearing non-native fruit, all of which can be harvested and sold for a large profit on the player's island. The fruit will always be the player's "secondary" fruit, which will always be the same when coming to this island. Three rocks can be found on the lowest level, and one on the raised section.

Having a 10.15% encounter rate, this mystery island has the highest chance, statisically.

Scorpion island [ edit ]

Mystery Island 12 NH.jpg

A island with four triangular cliffs in each corner. The clearing in the center contains 7 rocks, all of which will dispense Bells when struck with a shovel or axe. Scorpions will generate en-masse within the clearing, making for a difficult but potentially very lucrative bug catching opportunity. If the player is bitten they will respawn back on the dock.

This island can only be visited a maximum of once per day and is only available during times the scorpion is available to catch.

Tarantula island [ edit ]

Mystery Island 13 NH.jpg

A small square island with a ring of water in the center. Tarantulas will generate en masse in the center, making for a difficult but potentially very lucrative bug catching opportunity. If the player is bitten they will respawn back on the dock. The ring of water in the center is narrow enough for the player to jump across without the need for a vaulting pole.

This island can only be visited a maximum of once per day, and only at times the tarantula is available to catch.

Rugged woodland [ edit ]

Mystery Island 14 NH.jpg

Chance: 1.5%

An island with several isolated raised sections and no rivers or ponds. Hardwood Tree s can be found all over the island. Only insects associated with trees will appear here.

The following insects can be found on this island:

  • Walking Stick
  • Earth-Boring Dung Beetle
  • Scarab Beetle
  • Miyama Stag
  • Rainbow Stag
  • Cyclommatus Stag
  • Golden Stag
  • Horned Dynastid

  • Goliath Beetle
  • Drone Beetle
  • Giraffe Stag
  • Blue Weevil Beetle

This island can only be visited a maximum of once per day.

Flat woodland [ edit ]

Mystery Island 17 NH.jpg

This island is almost identical to the Bamboo island, but with Cedar Tree s instead of Bamboo Tree s. Only insects associated with trees will appear here. Four rocks can be found in each corner of the island.

Curly river [ edit ]

Mystery Island 18 NH.jpg

The island features a tiny raised section in the north-east corner, with a winding river that doubles back on itself and exists to the east, resembling a horseshoe. Three rocks can be found on the lowest level, and one on the raised section.

  • Red Dragonfly
  • Darner Dragonfly
  • Banded Dragonfly
  • Diving Beetle
  • Giant Water Bug

Big fish [ edit ]

Mystery Island 19 NH.jpg

The island features a raised section in the north-east corner, with two waterfalls that empty into a ring-shaped river that exits to the west. The waters of this island contain only large fish. It has a slightly lower chance of appearing than the other island with big fish, and contains only regular flowers and insects.

Only large fish (i.e. fish of size 4, 5 or 6) appear on this island.

  • Saddled Bichir
  • Snapping Turtle
  • Soft-Shelled Turtle
  • Giant Snakehead
  • Red Snapper
  • Football Fish

  • Olive Flounder
  • Giant Trevally
  • Blue Marlin
  • Napoleonfish

Trash [ edit ]

Mystery Island 20 NH.jpg

The island features a large curved raised section in the north to north-east, with smaller raised sections in the south-east and south-west corners. A hook-shaped river on the lowest level flows from the center of the island and exits to the west.

The waters on this island contain no fish, only trash and there is little else of value on this island. The only insects that spawn are water-related ones.

The following insects appear on this island:

  • Giant water bug

Dorsal-fin [ edit ]

Mystery Island 21 NH.jpg

Chance: 0.5%

An island where all dorsal-finned fish can be found in abundance in the island's waters. These fish include Saw Shark , Whale Shark , Great White Shark , Hammerhead Shark , Ocean Sunfish , and Suckerfish . The island contains a squared ring of water creating a small islet in the center, which features a formation of cliffs that resemble a dorsal-fin. No fish will spawn in the surrounding water of the islet, not even when using Fish Bait .

Notably, this is the only location in the game that naturally features a fourth-tier of elevation. Towns cannot naturally generate with this, as they can only be created with the Island Designer Construction Permit .

Waterfalls [ edit ]

Mystery Island 23 NH.jpg

Chance: 10%

A three-tier island with a river and multiple waterfalls, which empties into the sea on the eastern side, and a holding pond on the western side. Flowers cover the entire island.

Gold Nuggets [ edit ]

Mystery Island 24 NH.jpg

Chance: 0.3%

An island containing a small rectangular raised section, with very large squared pond behind it. A tiny square island lies in the center containing a single rock that dispenses up to 8 gold nuggets . The only way to get to the center is to climb up the cliff, and down the back, then vault over the pond. Scorpions are the only insect to spawn on this island.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 Release Date Leaks

Alan wake 2's physical release includes a loaded collector's edition, dragon ball fans share which what-if scenarios they want in sparking zero.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons  introduced a brand new, unique exploration tool. To go along with the new island theme, you can take a plane from your own home island to a "mystery" island using a special ticket purchased via the Nook Stop. Orville will send you to one of several special islands, where you can harvest materials and fruit, go fishing, and hunt for bugs. In some instances, there will even be villagers that can be invited to move to your island.

RELATED:  Animal Crossing New Horizons: 10 Beginner Tips For Animal Crossing Newcomers

While there are a few basic and more common mystery islands, some are rare and filled with ways to make extra cash. Here are all the mystery islands you might come across in your travels.

11 Starter Islands

There are four basic starter islands available, all of which contain your home island's native fruit and some bodies of water. One of these islands has a unique spiral shape that requires no tools to get around, but other than that, it's best to use as a place to harvest materials.

Another starter island has only a large pond and the ocean, which is useful for getting pond-specific fish. One island contains several cliffs so that one requires the ladder to explore. Similarly, there are waterfall islands, which can spawn some decent waterfall fish.

10 Tree Islands

Starter islands will have a decent amount of trees in three types (fruit, hardwood, and cedar), but there are also islands containing only hardwood trees. While these islands are primarily just basic islands, they are useful for farming the three different wood types (hardwood, softwood, and wood).

The best part is that on these islands, you can farm materials by cutting down all the trees with an ax without fear of Isabelle telling you ten minutes later that you need more trees.

9 Trash Island

This looks like a normal island, with a curving river falling from cliffs and flowing to the left into the ocean. Instead of fish, though, only trash can be found in the waters here. You might fish up some stones, empty cans, old boots, and tires.

RELATED:  Animal Crossing New Horizons: Which Villager Are You, Based On Your Zodiac Sign?

The items may seem useless, but after a few catches, your villager should declare some new DIY recipe ideas. Plus, you can take the items back to your island and try to catch some flies. Of course, the usual materials can be farmed on this island, as well.

8 Bamboo Island

The final tree type, bamboo trees, can be found only on their own special mystery island. Hitting these trees will give you both bamboo pieces and young spring bamboo pieces, which can be used in a variety of DIY recipes. There are also bamboo shoots buried in the ground next to the trees. These can be taken back to your island and planted to start your own collection.

It is important to note that while the bamboo island and bamboo trees can be found year-round, young spring bamboo is a seasonal material, so harvest that while you can.

7 Rare Flower Islands

Cross-breeding flowers to create hybrids can take a ton of time and is not always guaranteed to work. If you happen to come across rare flowers island, your chances of spawning more hybrids are better.

Rare flowers island will contain your native flower types in their rare colors. Tulips, for example, will display black, orange, and pink on this island. They will be planted around a large, round pond. In addition to collecting these rare flowers using a shovel, you can also catch some bugs that only spawn near hybrid flower colors.

6 Foreign Fruit Island

Rather than your native fruit, this island will be filled with trees containing your "sister fruit," according to popular data miner Ash Wolf (@_Ninji)'s mystery island guide . Nineteen fruit trees can be found on this island filled with three fruits per tree.

RELATED:  Animal Crossing New Horizons: 10 Best Custom Codes For Island Improvement

Harvesting and selling foreign fruits is a very popular way to make some quick cash, as these fruits sell for a higher price at your local Nook's Cranny.

5 Tarantula/Scorpion Island

Tarantula island and scorpion island are straight out of a nightmare, but the visits are worth all the cash. Between the hours of 7 p.m. and 4 a.m., you can try your luck at catching an inventory full of these dangerous critters. There seem to be a few different variations of the official tarantula/scorpion island, but as long as the critter is in season, they will be the only bugs to spawn here.

You can also attempt to make your own tarantula or scorpion island by removing everything on a regular mystery island. These bugs sell for a pretty penny at Nook's Cranny, and for even more if you sell to Flick.

4 Big Fish Islands

There are two "big fish islands" to find, but both spawn only large fish, some of which are rare and difficult to catch on the homeland. One island features a four-legged body of water in the center and rare flowers all over. The other island contains normal flowers but features a river running from the mouth into a roundabout on the island itself.

3 Fin Island

Fins island is a very rare find, with only a one percent chance of visiting, according to Wolf. The island contains a rectangular pond with cliffs in the center. It is mostly normal, though the only fish that spawn her are large, finned fish.

RELATED:  Animal Crossing New Horizons: 10 Etiquette Tips For Visiting Another Island That Everyone Should Know

This includes the infamous great white and hammerhead sharks, which are available from June to September in the Northern Hemisphere and December to March in the southern hemisphere. Visiting this island is a great way to knock out some museum donations or make quick cash.

2 Money Rock Islands

Every day on your own island, you can find one rock that you can hit to receive 16,100 bells. What if we told you there are islands filled with multiple money rocks? The first and more common money rock island contains a very large pond with an island in the center. On the north side, you can break a rock to access the center island and hit six money rocks for up to a whopping 96,000 bell return.

The second island, though a bit rarer, has a ground-level filled with seven money rocks and flowers. There are four cliffs in the corners.

1 Gold Island

This island is as rare of a find as fins island, but it's got a great reward. On this island, you will find some flowers, scorpions (hello extra money), and a large, rectangular pond. Climb onto the cliff and down the back to vault to a tiny center island. There, you will find one rock containing eight golden nuggets, a very rare crafting material.

Maps Of All Mystery Islands (via. Reddit)

mystery island tour guide

A user named trollmz posted a rather comprehensive list of some of the islands that they (or perhaps another user) were able to uncover in-game. Please also use this as a reference when you arrive on a new island!

① Tarantula Island

Tarantula Island

This is an island filled with Tarantulas! You can sell each one you catch for 8,000 Bells, so if you fill up your inventory you can make a ton of money. This is highly recommended for Bell Farming!

② Shark Island

Shark Island

This island has a large pond with an island in the middle. The island is made of cliffs in the shape of a dorsal fin!

③ Bamboo Island

bamboo

An island with a bamboo forest. There are no rivers or ponds, and the bamboo forest is surrounded by the ocean. It is also really great for hunting Beetles in the summer!

Get Bamboo Materials

mystery island tour guide

You can get plenty of bamboo & Young Spring Bamboo from this island. They are usually hard to obtain, so bring back a ton with you on your way home!

④ Emperor Buttefly Island

Emperor Butterfly Island

This island will have a pond in the middle surrounded by hybrid flowers of the same type. It will spawn many Emperor Butterflies at night. There are also lots of rare butterflies to be found on this island, making it an excellent place to farm flowers.

⑤ Fruit Island

Fruit Island

This island is like the Bamboo Island, but without the Bamboo. There are no ponds or cliffs, making it really easy to tear down all the trees and use as a bug hunting ground. On summer nights, you can catch Golden Stag & Horned Hercules beetles, making this a great place for money-farming.

⑥ Island With A Big Pond

pond

An island with a large pond on it. This is a good place to focus on fishing!

Aim For Koi

koi

Koi spawns frequently on this island. You can sell it for 4000 bells, making this a great money-making opportunity.

⑦ Island With A Cliff

cliff

Not a particularly appealing island if you're looking for items. You need a Ladder to access all the areas because of the cliffs.

⑧ Spiral Island

Spiral Island

This island features winding rivers that form a spiral shape. They will often impede your way, meaning you might be unable to proceed if you don't have the Vaulting Pole !

⑨ Island With Few Species Of Bugs

Island No Bugs

One member of our team was able to get this item and we were unable to confirm the presence of any insects except for Giant water bugs . We explored for 1-2 hours, but this was the only bug to appear - which is excellent, because it happens to sell for 2000 bells a piece. Also, according to other users, you can only fish up trash on this island!

What Are Mystery Island Tours?

  • 1 trip costs 2,000 Miles
  • Single Player only
  • If you have the maximum number of villagers, you won't find a new one on a mystery island
  • Different flowers will spawn for different people
  • The island you get is totally random
  • Rare islands have a very low chance to be selected
  • You can purchase some tools with miles
  • Most critters are the same as your island

You Can Visit A Deserted Island

mystery tour

Mystery Island Tour is a tour on which you can visit a deserted island by consuming a Nook Miles Ticket. Talk to Orville at the Airport to take part in a Mystery Tour. On that tour you can get materials, find new villagers and experience a different island environment!

You Can Meet New Villagers

Bianca

At each deserted island, you can meet 1 new villager. By talking to him/her, you can ask them to move to your island!

Sometimes There Are No Villagers

There are many cases when visiting a Mystery Island where there won't be anyone on it. If you have the maximum number of characters on your island, this might happen, so try kicking one out!

Not Possible To Play With Friends (Co-op)

The Mystery Island tour is a single-player experience only. It is not possible to bring your friends along with you!

You Can Still Purchase Some Tools

Wilbur Tools

By talking to Wilbur on the island, you'll be able to purchase some flimsy tools from him (though they cost Miles!) It is of course best to be well-prepared and bring your own tools, but if you happen to forget, this is a good alternative.

Note that the tools Wilbur sells are all flimsy. Since Flimsy axes cannot cut down trees, it's really important to bring your own Axes before coming!

Items You Can Buy While On Tour

Get coconuts and bamboo.

These special islands could potentially have special fruits & plants such as Coconuts & Bamboo! These are worth collecting & bringing back and planting on your island!

Get Furniture From Shaking Trees

On every Mystery Island you visit, you will be able to get one piece of furniture by shaking trees! Make sure you get this item before you head home!

NH-screenshot-Orville notices the Nook Miles Ticket

Orville notices the player's Nook Miles Ticket

Mystery tours are a feature introduced in New Horizons , which allows the player to visit random uncharted islands from the airport on their island . Mystery tours provide the player with a way to gather more crafting materials , such as iron nuggets if they run out of them on their home island, as well as opportunities to collect rare fish and bugs , non-native fruit trees , and hybrid flowers .

  • 5 Previously available Mystery Islands

Accessing the island requires a Nook Miles Ticket , which can be purchased from the Nook Stop in Resident Services for 2,000 Nook Miles . The player must then visit the airport and talk to Orville , selecting the option to "visit other places." If the player has the Nook Miles Ticket in their inventory, Orville will notice and ask if the player would like to visit a mystery island. Visiting a mystery island uses up the Nook Miles Ticket.

Composition [ ]

NH-screenshot-Wilbur greeting the player to the mystery island

Wilbur greeting the player to the mystery island

All mystery tour islands are guaranteed to feature a dock where the player arrives and can return to their own island , a non-removable simple DIY workbench , and beaches with at least four palm trees. A non-removable campfire will be present if a villager is camping on the island. If the island has hardwood and/or pine trees a random tree will drop a wasp nest while another will drop a random furniture item upon being shaken. There is a 50% chance of a single fossil spawning, as well as a 50% chance of a message in a bottle spawning on the shore. Wilbur is also always present on the dock and will sell flimsy tools in exchange for Nook Miles. The makeup of the island's interior is randomly chosen from a pool of layouts.

If the player has one or more empty house plots available on their island, each mystery tour island will have one random villager camping there. They can be invited to move to the player's island. When all house plots are occupied, no villagers will be present on the mystery islands. They will also not be there if you have reached the limit of villagers living on your island (10 NPC villagers) and can't reserve any more plots. Villagers are selected the moment the player initiated a mystery tour, and the villager is rolled first on species, then a villager of that species. The game will not factor in personality types at all, and will not consider duplicates or villagers that you have encountered before.

Villagers in your move in queue (obtained from other player's voids and there can only be 4) are excluded from appearing in mystery island tours. They are different from the villagers that Tom Nook invites, as Tom Nook tends to invite villagers of personality types you don't have, and villagers from the move in queue will always claim they moved from a different player island.

If the player has already invited a villager to move to their island that day, even if they have more open plots, no villagers will be present on the mystery island tours. Note that there is an exception to this when filling the initial 3 plots, players can invite more than one villager per day at that time, consisting of one lazy , one peppy , and one normal villager.

Some mystery islands spawn large numbers of rare critters: there exists an island where only tarantulas and scorpions spawn, providing the player with a way to grind large amounts of Bells relatively quickly, similar to palm tree bugs on the island in New Leaf . Passing out due to a tarantula or scorpion bite on a mystery island will not return the player to their home island; they will wake up by the seaplane at the beginning of the island.

Some mystery islands can only be visited at a certain time of day, such as the island infested with hostile insects at 7 PM to 4 AM. However, whatever time you arrived at your island is your locked encounter table for bugs and fish. So you can arrive at an island at 3:59 pm and catch bugs that stop spawning at 4 pm after that time. Likewise, you can visit a nocturnal island, put your system to sleep, and resume your game during the day and get nocturnal spawns during the day.

May Day Island [ ]

There is also one special type of mystery island, the May Day island. This island is only accessible once per year during the month of May , by using an unseen one-use item, the May Day Ticket, and is different each year. The player can acknowledge this island and the ticket used to get there by talking to Tom Nook during any time during May, which will inform them that a May Day ticket has been sent to the airport and is ready to be used, however the ticket itself is never present in the player's inventory and is only mentioned by Tom Nook and Orville . The May Day island is a maze where the player has all tools and items removed from their inventory and must work their way out with very limited materials to craft new ones. If a player gets stuck and cannot complete the maze, they can use the Rescue Service app of their NookPhone in order to start over. At the end of the maze, the player gets to meet Rover . Rover will give you his briefcase as a reward for the first year doing the May Day event, and a photo of him for the second time doing the May Day event.

Kapp'n's Tours [ ]

With the 2.0.0 update , Kapp'n is also able to take the player on Mystery Tours once per day by paying 1,000 Nook Miles . He is unlocked after the player has gotten K.K. Slider to visit their island, and after 10 total villagers have moved in. The mystery islands here differ in the fact that they are not limited to the season or time that you are currently in, allowing players to catch off-season bugs and fish. These islands also feature buried gyroid fragments , which you can bring back to your island.

List of Mystery Islands [ ]

The same island cannot be visited more than once; even though visiting an island with the same layout and theme is possible, if items were left on the ground on a similar one, they will not be present when the player "returns." Wilbur explains that he burns the flight plans to these islands after each trip for "security reasons".

There are exactly 18 unique island layouts. They have been given conjectural names because mystery tour islands are unnamed. Island layouts marked "(rare)" can only be encountered once per day. Some islands will only begin appearing after the Resident Services tent on the player's island has been upgraded to a building.

With the 1.2.0. update , 2 islands containing hybrid flowers were removed and encounter rates were adjusted.

List of Kapp'n Mystery Islands [ ]

With the 2.0.0. update , A new list of islands are available, but players can only visit them with Kapp'n. They are separated into two lists of "normal" and "rare" island types. The game first rolls for the island type, and then chooses the island. Common islands have a 78% chance of being chosen, and rare islands have a 22%. However, if the player's island hasn't passed certain dates, some rare islands might be unavailable. For example, islands that never experienced winter will never allow Kapp'n to take the player to the Snow Island . When an unavailable rare island is rolled, the game instead rerolls a normal island.

Additionally, all common islands (except the Full Gyroid Island) has a 5% chance of having 1000 bell money trees instead of fruit trees, a 2% chance of all rocks becoming money rocks, and a 29.4% chance that only one rock will become a money rock.

(note, each island has a small number of different maps to choose from, because of this I decided to remove the map section.)

Previously available Mystery Islands [ ]

These two islands were removed with the Earth Day update .

  • Each island is numbered within the game's data. Islands 3, 5, 9, 15, and 22 aren't available, suggesting that they were removed during development or may be added in a future update.
  • Prior to update 1.2.0 , there were two additional islands, both containing hybrid flowers. Encounter rates for the remaining 18 islands were also adjusted.

On a Mystery Island tour in Animal Crossing New Horizons, players are allowed to collect crafting materials, invite villagers, take fruit, rare flowers, fish and bugs home, different rare mystery islands have different resources, but also appears randomly. Here is an ACNH Mystery Island tour guide covering all the island types, probability, items and features, as well as some tips for visiting a mystery island.

ACNH Mystery Island Tour Guide

How to Get to Animal Crossing New Horizons Mystery Tour?

Animal Crossing Mystery Tour provides a chance for players to visit random uncharted islands using a Nook Mile Ticket and collect more crafting materials from there. Mystery islands often have rare critters, fish and bugs, non-native fruit trees, hybrid flowers and more ACNH items you can’t obtain on your own island. To visit other islands, you must buy a Nook Miles Ticket from the Nook Stop in Resident Services first for 2000 Nook Miles and depart from the airport.

Different Types of ACNH Mystery Islands & Probability

What’s the chance you can visit rare Mystery Island? Here we list the different types of Mystery Island in Animal Crossing New Horizons, with the encounter probability and obtainable items.  Ninji has discovered the rarest Mystery Island with 1% appearance chance in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Tips and Tricks for Visiting a Mystery Island

Take the required tools

If you want to bring rare fish, bugs, and Animal Crossing bells from the mystery island, some tools are necessary, including net, fishing rod and shovel. The ladder and vaulting pole are also required to climb cliffs and cross river. The DIY workbench will be available on mystery islands, so you can also craft the tools there with the available materials. Ensure you have unlocked or purchased the vaulting pole before the travel.

Make more preparation

The chance to visit which island is random, so you’d better prepare anything may be required. While the probability of each island is different, check out above different types of mystery island and learn about their features.

Have your inventory empty

When you arrive a mystery island, especially a rare island with numerous resources, you’ll want to take as many items as possible home, so try to leave a maximum storage space or expand your inventory before the tour.

Use amiibo card

In some cases, you will go to an island without villagers, if you want to recruit new Villagers, consider using an amiibo+ card instead to add new villagers.

Don’t quit the game during the travel

If you turn off your Switch during the Mystery Island tour, the trip will be over. Start travel when you have enough time and complete everything you should do before exiting.

15 Things You Need to Know Before Cruising to Mystery Island, Vanuatu

15 Things You Need to Know Before Cruising to Mystery Island, Vanuatu

Beautiful Mystery Island is a popular port of call on many South Pacific cruises. Here’s what you need to know before your visit.

Do you have a port stop at Mystery Island in Vanuatu on your upcoming South Pacific cruise? I spent a day exploring this gorgeous tiny island on a cruise from Sydney, Australia .

Mystery Island, officially called Inyeug , is a little slice of paradise covered with greenery and surrounded by a healthy coral reef.

Tip: To keep Mystery Island’s coral reefs healthy for the next generation, please use only reef-safe sunscreen when you visit. If you’re not sure what to look for, here’s an honest review of one of my favorite brands.

This tiny dot on the map is an unspoiled idyll, and you can see it for yourself on a cruise!

I’ll share 15 important things I learned about visiting Mystery Island—from a bit of the area’s culture , what you can expect to see and do , and which essentials you’ll need to pack in your beach bag to make the most of your day.

1. Most people visit Mystery Island by cruise ship

Although Mystery Island has a small grass airstrip left over from WWII used mainly to receive supplies for nearby islands, the vast majority of visitors arrive by cruise ship.

Currently, Carnival, Princess, Norwegian, P&O, Celebrity, Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean, AIDA, and Hapag-Lloyd all offer cruises to Mystery Island.

Usually only one ship visits the small island at a time, and not every day—although on rare occasions Mystery Island will host two ships for the day.

mystery island tour guide

Mystery Island offers a real “private island” experience without all the extras that you might find at private destinations owned by cruise lines.

There aren’t waterslides, fancy beach cabanas, swim-up bars, or huge crowds. Instead, you’ll find pristine natural beaches and basic amenities, with enough space for everyone to enjoy the island.

Related: 12 Amazing Cruise Line Private Islands You’ll Want to Visit

2. No one lives on Mystery Island

Visitors to idyllic Mystery Island often wonder why no one lives on this pearl of the Pacific! One reason is that local legend tells that the island is haunted by sea gods, so it’s considered taboo to live there.

mystery island tour guide

But a more practical reason for Mystery Island being uninhabited is that it doesn’t have the infrastructure needed for modern-day habitation. There isn’t electricity or roads like you’ll find on the nearby island of Aneityum.

For anyone nervous about a lack of toilet facilities, you’ll be happy to hear there’s a newer toilet block not far from where you’ll land on the island. There are also rustic, wooden-seat outhouses scattered around, but they’re well-ventilated, comfortable, and clean.

3. Mystery Island is a tender port

There isn’t a dock on Mystery Island for cruise ships, so your ship will drop anchor offshore and ferry passengers over on tender boats (which at this tiny port will be the ship’s lifeboats).

mystery island tour guide

Tendering operations can take time, especially if you’re visiting on a larger cruise ship, so take this into consideration when planning your day. Some cruise lines require guests to pick up tender tickets—check your daily planner or the cruise line app for details.

Related: Everything You Need to Know About Tender Ports and Tender Boats on a Cruise

Since it’s not as easy to return to the ship for lunch as it is at docked ports, you might want to prepare to purchase lunch on the island if you’re going to stay for the full day.

4. You can walk the perimeter of Mystery Island in under 30 minutes!

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider walking the perimeter of the island and discovering all of its beautiful beaches. Mystery Island is really small, at just 61 square miles (159 square kilometers) .

It’s completely encircled by sandy beaches, so many people can walk completely around the island in under a half hour. It took me a little longer because I kept stopping to take pictures!

mystery island tour guide

Just like at other cruise ports, many cruisers scope out the closest beach and plop down a towel. You’ll notice that the sands nearest the tender dock will be busy all day.

But if you walk around the island, you’ll be sure to find a sandy spot that’s a lot less crowded. I found an area on the other side of the island under a big shady tree to relax, then joined in with a group of snorkelers to spot schools of colorful fish. I even had the chance to swim for a bit with a sea turtle not too far from the shore!

Tip: Mystery Island doesn’t have any lifeguards, so avoid swimming or snorkeling too far offshore or in the most secluded areas.

5. What you can see and do on Mystery Island

If you’re visiting Mystery Island just to relax and soak up the sun on gorgeous sandy beaches, you can absolutely do that!

But it’s not just a Gilligan’s Island -style spot that’s completely deserted.

Residents of nearby islands boat over each day when a cruise ship is in port—often with the whole family—to offer a variety of services, amenities, and entertainment. Enjoy what they have to offer, or you can just discover the little island’s rustic charm by exploring its shady footpaths through the mangroves.

Here are some of my favorite things to do on Mystery Island:

  • Buy souvenirs at the straw market
  • Have your hair braided
  • Enjoy a massage
  • Snorkel with turtles or explore a shipwreck
  • Visit the tiny WWII-era airstrip
  • Have your picture taken in the famous “Cannibal Soup” pot
  • Enjoy music and dance performances by locals
  • Take a long beach stroll around the island

6. You’ll have several options for lunch and snacks on Mystery Island

If you’re planning to spend most of the day on Mystery Island, you’ll be happy to know that several lunch options are available, though they tend to focus on local seafood. You might also find grilled chicken or sausage, along with fried plantains, rice, fruit, and veggies.

I enjoyed a delicious lunch of yellowfin tuna, prepared on a wood-fired grill, at the open-air Mystery Grill & BBQ .

mystery island tour guide

Boiled spiny lobster was also a popular lunch option, although this New England girl was shocked by the high prices!

mystery island tour guide

You can also purchase packaged snacks and bottled soft drinks from a few vendors to enjoy on the beach. Vanuatu’s local beer, Tusker, is also available on the island.

7. Massages and hair braiding are very cheap on Mystery Island

If the spa prices on your cruise ship are too much for your budget, consider trying a relaxing massage during your beach day on Mystery Island!

I found several massage huts that charged $15 for a 20-minute massage, $20 for 30 minutes, and $40 for an hour. Prices varied a little, so walk around to find the best deal.

mystery island tour guide

During the massage, you’ll wear a swimsuit and be in a small, mixed-gender hut for the service, but it’s very relaxing and an amazing value.

If you’re wearing a two-piece, your practitioner will undo the clasp of your top at some point and gently guide your arms through the straps to access your back. I found that they were very aware that I was in mixed company, and I never felt exposed. If this would make you feel uncomfortable, let the practitioner know at the start of your service.

Hair braiding is also very cheap on Mystery Island. My hair is a few inches past my shoulders and I’m always quoted well over $100 for hair braiding in port on Caribbean cruises. On Mystery Island it was just $12 for long hair!

Tip: If you find a massage or hair braiding venue you’d like to use but the wait is too long, ask if you can make an appointment! Instead of wasting an hour waiting in the sun, I was able to take a refreshing swim and then turned up a few minutes before my scheduled time.

8. Vendors on Mystery Island accept AUD

The local currency on Mystery Island is Vanuatu’s vatu, but I didn’t encounter a single vendor that didn’t accept Australian dollars. I also always received change in AUD, but I can’t promise that’ll be the case for every cruise.

Several vendors also listed prices in US dollars on their signs.

mystery island tour guide

I didn’t see any vendors that accepted credit cards, so be sure to carry some cash with you for snacks, souvenirs, and excursions.

Tip: Although haggling over prices is common—and even expected—at markets in some parts of the world, it’s really not part of the culture in Vanuatu.

9. Most vendors on Mystery Island speak at least some English

The nation of Vanuatu has three official languages: Bislama, English, and French—and the popularity of the three languages is in that order. But since most visitors to Mystery Island are English-speaking, you probably won’t have much of an issue communicating with most of the vendors in English.

My American accent did pose a problem a few times, so I just slowed my speech down or tried French whenever I noticed that someone didn’t seem to understand me.

If you’d like to practice a few Bislama phrases before your visit, here are some of the most helpful basics:

10. You can skip the pricey ship excursions and book on the island

Some cruisers swear by booking shore excursions through the cruise line. Although it’s usually a more expensive option, the cruise line usually promises that you’ll make it back before all-aboard (and the ship will wait if the excursion is late).

This might make sense in many ports of call, but all of the shore excursions on Mystery Island are run by just a few local companies. You’ll be able to book most basic excursions right when you arrive on the island, often at a significant discount.

mystery island tour guide

Excursions offered include snorkeling, paddleboarding, and clear kayak tours, along with boat tours to a turtle lagoon or shark cave.

But if you have your heart set on a specific excursion, like those that travel to the neighboring island of Aneityum, you might want to book through the cruise line to guarantee your spot.

11. You can’t stay on Mystery Island overnight on a cruise

Most South Pacific cruise itineraries that visit Mystery Island only stop for the day. However, you’ll occasionally find an overnight itinerary.

For example, on my recent cruise to Vanuatu and New Caledonia , our itinerary changed several times. When Isle of Pines announced they wouldn’t be accepting cruise ships for the foreseeable future, I was so excited to see that we’d have an overnight at Mystery Island instead!

When you have an overnight at most cruise ports, you don’t need to return to the ship and can book a hotel or stay with friends if you’d like to travel away from the port.

However, on a Mystery Island overnight, guests need to return to the ship in the evening and can tender back to the island in the morning.

12. Aneityum is just a short boat ride away

After spending a lazy beach day on Mystery Island, my plan was to take a shore excursion to Aneityum, the big island that you can see from your ship. It’s only a ten-minute boat ride from Inyeug, and most excursions include a village walking tour to see traditional homes, local schools, the medical dispensary, and the police station.

Other excursions might include a traditional kava ceremony and firewalking performance.

mystery island tour guide

Sadly (due to a maintenance issue on the ship) our overnight at Mystery Island was canceled and so was my day on Aneityum.

However, I did chat with quite a few of my new cruise friends onboard who had done an Aneityum shore excursion (some chose this because they had already visited Mystery Island, and others just weren’t big beach fans), and everyone enjoyed their day learning how the locals live on the larger island.

13. Cruisers are encouraged to bring school supplies for area children

For the past several years, cruisers have been bringing school supplies for the children of Aneityum when they visit Mystery Island.

mystery island tour guide

If you’re considering packing some school supplies for the local kids, here’s a quick list of what they’re looking for, according to an article in the Vanuatu Daily Post .

  • Exercise books
  • Colored pencils
  • Glue sticks
  • Pencil cases

14. The mystery of Mystery Island is a mystery!

There are several theories about why the tiny island of Inyeug is known as Mystery Island. The most popular is that cruise lines coined the name to make the island sound more appealing to potential guests.

Another theory is that during World War II when US troops created the airstrip on Inyeug, the runway was impossible to see from the water. The “mystery” came from the fact that it took a while before Japanese forces figured out where the planes were coming from.

But if you ask most locals, they’ll tell you that during Queen Elizabeth’s 1974 visit to several of Vanuatu’s islands, a reporter covering the tour asked the name of the island. When told that Inyeug means “small,” he decided that a headline of “Her Majesty Visits Mystery Island” would sell more papers than “Her Majesty Visits Small Island.”

15. What to pack in your day bag for Mystery Island

You won’t need to pack much in your day bag to enjoy your day on Mystery Island! Here are my essentials that you won’t want to forget when packing your Mystery Island beach bag:

  • Waterproof sunscreen
  • A swimsuit coverup
  • A beach towel from the ship
  • Snorkel gear
  • Water shoes
  • Cash (AUD, USD, or vatu)
  • A waterproof phone case that fits your phone, cash, and cruise card

Related: 20+ Cute Swim Coverups for Cruises & Beach Travel

If you’re very fair-skinned or not used to the South Pacific sun, you might also want to include a lightweight top and bottom layer to completely cover your skin in case you feel yourself burning.

I slathered on the waterproof sunscreen before I snorkeled, but still managed to burn my backside an alarming shade of red! Having a lightweight and comfortable pair of beach trousers in my bag saved me from doing more damage after I left the water.

If your cruise embarks from a port close to home and you can carry on a small portable beach umbrella or pop-up shelter, I’d consider doing so. During my visit, there weren’t any umbrella rentals available on the island.

My family have booked a cruise next summer visiting Mystery Island. We are very cautious about sun exposure and your article has me worried. Is there a way to guarantee a shaded beach spot on the island before our cruise?

Thursday 13th of July 2023

Hi Jacinta, when you visit Mystery Island all the spots on the beaches are first-come, first-served. I walked all over the island during my visit, and there aren't any shady areas on the beaches unless you're at the back edge of the sand near the island's central area. I'm also very cautious about sun exposure (I have very fair skin and I lost my dad when he was quite young to melanoma) so I understand your concern!

Here are my tips and ideas: (1) Lots of people carried pop-up beach shelters over, which you could do if you're driving to the port or can find a smaller one you can pack in your airline luggage (2) Get an early tender and head to the opposite side of the island. I found a low-hanging shady tree and set up camp underneath it so I could return whenever I needed a break from the sun. (3) Wear lightweight UV-resistant clothing like rash guards, and pack airy t-shirts and slouchy cotton pull-on trousers. (4) Pack lots of waterproof sun cream and reapply more often than you would at home.

Hope this helps, and happy cruising!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH) Guides

Kapp’n boat tours & new mystery islands.

mystery island tour guide

Kapp’n is a green turtle you can find offering special boat tours to islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH)! Learn where to find him, how to take a boat tour, and the islands you can visit in this guide.

Newly introduced in the massive Version 2.0 Update released on November 3rd , you’ll need to have your copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons fully updated to experience Kapp’n and his boat tours.

What Are Kapp’n Boat Tours In Animal Crossing?

Kapp’n Boat Tours offer a new way to discover unique and mysterious islands from faraway in Animal Crossing: New Horizons — different from the mystery islands that Dodo Airline have been able to take you to since launch!

mystery island tour guide

These brand new mysterious islands will often offer new special items that can’t be found on your own home island, like new types of flora such as vines and bushes. We suspect there might even be new types of fruits too, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Additionally, Kapp’n can take you to islands that of a different season or weather than your home island. For example, when your date is set to July in the Northern Hemisphere, you might visit an island that’s in Winter allowing you to catch different fish or bugs!

In fact, these out-of-season islands can even feature special seasonal materials like Snowflakes , or items from a different time of day like wishing for Star Fragments.

How To Take Kapp’n Boat Tours & Visit Islands

You can take a boat tour with Kapp’n in Animal Crossing: New Horizons by visiting your island’s Pier in the bottom left or bottom right of the map, depending on the layout.

mystery island tour guide

Simply walk up to Kapp’n on the Pier and he’ll ask for you for a small fee of 1,000 Nook Miles currency per round-trip to a mysterious island! You don’t need to purchase Nook Miles Tickets for Kapp’n.

Note that you can unfortunately only set sail with Kapp’n for a mystery island once per in-game day . Of course, impatient players can time travel to get ahead if they desire.

Kapp’n Island Materials

While exploring the Mystery Islands that Kapp’n takes you to in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you may discover some new materials and plants you haven’t seen anywhere else! That’s because some very exciting new items have been introduced on Kapp’n Boat Tour Islands.

An extremely useful new type of item, Vines can be found on Kapp’n Islands and can be placed on your island’s cliffs to climb up them — essentially as a makeshift ladder that looks much cooler!

Additionally, there are many new DIY Recipes in Version 2.0 that require Vines as a crafting material to create items — check out every new recipe here .

Glowing Moss

Perfect for night-time decoration, Glowing Moss is a new type of plant that can be found on Kapp’n Islands somewhat similar to weeds and flowers. Unlike other plants though, the Glowing Moss features a subtle glow during the evening making for a great night-time effect!

Just like with Vines, there new DIY Recipes in Version 2.0 that require Glowing Moss as a crafting material to create items — check out every new recipe here .

Plumeria Bushes

A new type of bush called Plumeria can be found on Kapp’n Islands in two different Pink and White color options! In the Northern Hemisphere, they bloom in season from June 1st to September 20th. Learn more about Bushes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons here.

Kapp’n Boat Tour Islands

There are many different mysterious islands you can visit by taking a Kapp’n Boat Tour in Animal Crossing: New Horizons Version 2.0! We’re beginning to research all of them and will list them below as we do.

While the exact contents of each island can vary, we’ve generally found that a Gyroid Fragment is buried in the ground every time.

Vine & Glowing Moss Island

mystery island tour guide

On this special island seen during the Animal Crossing Direct, many brand new materials can be collected including Vines, Glowing Moss, and Plumeria Bushes.

Bell Trees Island

On this unique island, you can find multiple Money Trees containing bags of 1,000 Bells each on them. Simply shake the trees to get your free Bells!

Vegetable Farm Islands

mystery island tour guide

There are multiple different islands that can be discovered with abandoned farms on them. As part of these farms, you can find all of the of the new vegetable crops in Version 2.0 including Carrots, Wheat, Sugarcane, Tomatoes, Potatoes, and Pumpkins.

Star Fragment Island

On this dazzling island, beautiful shooting stars will race across the sky! Star Fragments can be found all over the land including on the beach and even inside of Rocks if you smash them with a shovel. Be sure to check the beach for an appropriate DIY Crafting recipe in a message bottle too!

Seasonal Islands

There are multiple different islands covering each major season in Animal Crossing: New Horizons! On these islands, you can find both the exclusive seasonal materials and crafting recipes of seasons including Spring Cherry Blossoms, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and more.

What is this species of Neopet?

You won't need to answer this question if you log into your jnAccount.

For Buyables: We will use the Shop Wiz to verify your suggestion, and in the process we may come up with our own average price. Reports are also not always checked immediately, so what we find may slightly differ!

For Unbuyables: We have strict pricing guidelines in place to prevent unscrupulous users from attempting to fudge unbuyable prices. If we cannot find evidence of your price suggestion, then we may simply not make any changes.

Return to Options

Is this item being falsely inflated and used maliciously on the Trading Post? Let us know by clicking the button below so that we can investigate.

Answer this question!

Note: We typically add false inflation alerts on any items that have jumped 300% or more in price compared to our current listed price. We typically only do this for items costing >100,000 NP, or buyable items that have gone unbuyable. For example, an item that goes from 500 NP to 2,000 NP would not receive an alert. But an item that has a consistent history of being around 75,000 NP that sees a sudden jump to say, 250,000 NP, might be worthy of a warning.

These guidelines do not apply to items inflated naturally due to time passing (such as a retired item raising in price over time), or an event occurring (such as Charity Corner pushing up the price of wearables).

The spirit of our inflation warning guidelines is to prevent buyers from being ripped off with prices they shouldn't be paying. So if you think an item qualifies, don't hestitate to let us investigate.

Are there newer lots on the Trading Post that don't appear in our history? Let us know and we'll add the new lots when we can.

Note: Since lots on the Trading Post come and go, we may or may not be able to catch the ones you found. And of course, we can only add what we find!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Kapp’n on his boat with an animal crossing player

Kapp’n, the lovable kappa (not turtle), has arrived in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 roster. He’s settled down on your island’s pier, ready to captain a little boat that’ll deliver you to different islands with unique landscapes, through Kapp’n’s Boat Tours.

In this Animal Crossing: New Horizons Kapp’n guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the crooning kappa’s arrival: Kapp’n history, what you can expect from his boat rides to mysterious islands that only he knows about, the price you’ll pay in Nook Miles for a trip and a sea shanty, and what you have to do before Kapp’n shows up .

Table of contents

Who is kapp’n, how do kapp’n’s boat tours work, how do i unlock kapp’n.

What are the islands?

Can I do anything while he’s singing?

Kapp’n is a kappa, a mythical, turtle-like, Japanese folktale monster, known for operating different methods of transport. In previous Animal Crossing games, he’s driven taxis and buses, but in New Horizons , he’s returned to his sailing roots.

From your island’s dock, he’ll lead you mysterious islands. Kapp’n’s Boat Tours cost 1,000 Nook Miles per trip, and he’ll sing you a sweet song on the way. Players are only allowed one boat ride per day.

kapp’n boat tour at night

Kapp’n will take you to a random island, different from those you can get from a Nook Mystery Tour . There are a bunch of different islands that Kapp’n will take you to, and they’ve all got something special going for them — some have exotic flora, while others are in different seasons or times of day. They’re also helpful for farming seasonal items, like snowflakes or mushrooms.

Kapp’n won’t appear on your island unless and until you’ve made some progress in the base game (the part of the game that existed before the 2.0 update). We’ve confirmed (with extensive testing) that you have to do the following before Kapp’n arrives:

  • Unlock Resident Services , so that Isabelle shows up in your town.
  • Get a three-star town rating , so that K.K. Slider performs in your town.
  • The day after K.K. Slider performs, Isabelle tells you that ordinances have been unlocked and that you can go on special boat tours , which is a reference to our beloved Kapp’n.

Kapp’n docked at the … dock in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Kapp’n will dock his boat on your empty New Horizons pier. When you start your game after the update is downloaded, he’ll be waiting for you there on the boat — no unlocking necessary.

If you happen to visit Blathers before, he’ll also push you toward the pier: To unlock Brewster , you’ve got to take one of Kapp’n’s tours to find the pigeon coffee slinger looking for gyroids.

After a brief song, you’ll arrive with Kapp’n at a mystery island. They’re random, and you can’t choose where you’ll dock. Here are some we’ve seen so far:

  • Crop islands , islands filled with wheat, pumpkins, tomatoes, or other crops
  • Shooting star island , where shooting stars are abundant, and star fragments come from rocks
  • Vine and glowing moss island , with vine and glowing moss, which doesn’t grow natively on your home island
  • Money tree island , where all trees grow Bell bags
  • Winter island , a place to catch snowflakes out of season
  • Cherry blossom island , where the trees are still pink and you can catch cherry blossoms
  • Acorn/pinecone/mushroom island , a fall island where acorns, pinecones , and mushrooms litter the ground

Regardless of the island, search around and dig up anything hidden, too: Sometimes, you’ll find gyroid fragments hidden underground or DIY recipes bottled up on the beach.

You can’t skip Kapp’n’s song, and how dare you for asking!? Just kidding. But you don’t have to just sit there. You can clap along to the beat (or not) by hitting the A button. You can use Reactions, too, with the other buttons on the right side of the Nintendo Switch.

If you’re in a rush, you can also get him to skip his singing by mashing the B button, but you would never interrupt a singing kappa, right?

Update (Nov. 11): We’ve added information about skipping Kapp’n’s sea shanty.

Update (Nov. 12): We’ve added information that explains what you must do before Kapp’n appears the dock.
