Unit Level Softball League 2024 - USAG Ansbach

Program overview .

There are many opportunities for U.S. Forces personnel to hunt, fish, and enjoy sport shooting in Germany. Contact Outdoor Recreation for further details.

Hunters may seek game including Red Deer (Rotwild), Roe Deer (Rehwild), Fallow Deer (Damwild), Wild Boar (Schwarzwild) and Chamois (Gamswild). Fishers will find several varieties of trout (Bachforelle, Regenbogenforelle, Bachsaibling, and Seesaibling), catfish (Waller or Wels) and pike (Hecht) along with many other fish in the waters of Germany and other European countries.

The German government permits the U.S. Forces in Europe to conduct courses that allow U.S. Forces personnel to qualify for a foreigner's hunting license, fishing license, and/or recreational sport shooting certification in Germany. Volunteer U.S. Forces personnel instruct courses in English at IMCOM-Europe garrisons and U.S. Air Forces Europe bases. Refer to Class listings or call Outdoor Recreation at your local garrison or Air Force base for detailed information.

The main emphasis of our training in hunting, fishing, and sport shooting courses is to learn German laws and traditions that are a bit more thorough when compared with licensing requirements in the states. However, the training in safety, game identification and overall procedures provides hunters, fishers, and sport shooters with knowledge and abilities to become more well-rounded in their outdoor experiences.

After gaining certification, U.S. Forces personnel may obtain German hunting/fishing licenses and join in hunting and fishing traditions that go back several hundred years, as well as becoming eligible for our hunting and fishing instructor program. U.S. Forces sport shooting certification enables U.S. Forces personnel to buy and possess firearms that they may use for enjoying training and competition throughout their assignment in Germany.

More information on the Hunting, Fishing and Sport Shooting program through the Army Europe Region 215-145 and U.S. Air Forces Europe Instruction 34-104, dated November 14, 2017.

The most recent update of content within this site - September 13, 2018: Uploaded revised AE Form 190-6 within documents and forms section.

Traditional seasons for hunting courses are in Spring and Fall.

U.S. Forces hunting courses from 2014 thru 2018 sustained high levels of participation as over 100 "young hunters" (Jungjägers) successfully completed the course each year.

Please contact the outdoor recreation program at your nearest Army garrison or Air Force base for info on their upcoming courses and events.

Efforts are underway to provide english-language explanations for terms within the "Hunter Dialect" (Jägersprache) file, as soon as possible. However, many of the terms in the "Hunter Dialect" file are translated in the German-English and English-German dictionary.

Hunting in Germany requires a German hunting license, obtainable via instruction and certification at each of the sites within the hunting courses list (above).

Many opportunities exist, ranging from drive hunts, to individual capital-game hunts, and full-season committments in private or public hunting reviers.

For each hunting year in Germany, the window for requesting a booked hunt is open during the month of February.  Locations for booked hunts vary between federal, state, and local forests within Germany.  Occasionally booked hunts are arranged with private Reviers.

In addition to booked hunts, garrison programs at Ansbach, Baumholder, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Stuttgart, and Wiesbaden have information for local and nearby hunting opportunities.  In addition, the Kaiserslautern Rod & Gun Club (operated by the USAFE 86th Force Support Squadron) and Spangdahlem Air Base Outdoor Recreation have information for local opportunities.

Please refer to the hunting course list (above) for contact info at each major installation.

Similar to hunting, garrison programs at Ansbach, Baumholder, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Kaiserslautern, Stuttgart, and Wiesbaden have nearby opportunities for fishing.

Fishing in Germany requires a German fishing license, obtainable via instruction and certification at each of the sites listed above.

Many opportunities exist, ranging from local ponds and streams, to overnight excursions with deep-sea fishing in the North Sea!

Aside from participating on a regular basis, either in training or in competitions, sport shooting certification in Germany requires individuals to complete a basic knowledge course.  The course is normally conducted on a Saturday and Sunday, and it features instruction, hands-on practical work, and a written test.  After completing the course and documenting regular (average 1.5 activities per month) participation, individuals may proceed with firearms ownership, registration, and possession.

Please refer to the hunting course list (above) and contact local installations for their upcoming courses and events.

1. Where am I able to hunt, fish, and sport shoot?

Hunting and fishing within Germany requires a license that can be obtained through the garrison's Hunting and Fishing Program. Sport shooting can be done at either host nation ranges or other garrisons.

Subjects covered include German law, land and game management, game disease, traditions, equipment and techniques, game hygiene, hunting dogs, and harvest plans. Testing procedures include safe weapons handling, written and verbal tests as well as a shooting  proficiency test.

A fishing license is a 30-hour course offered through Outdoor Recreation to U.S. ID card holders, 14 years and older. Subjects covered include German law, hydrology, ichnology, specialized ichnology, diseases and equipment and techniques. Testing procedures include a written test.

No sport shooting certification is needed on an authorized German range.

5. What courses are offered?

Hunting and fishing

6. Can I rent fishing poles and other equipment?

Yes, though Ansbach Outdoor Recreation

7. How can I register for a class to obtain a certificate or license?

Huntsville’s identity has been shaped by the military, and it wouldn’t be nicknamed “Rocket City” if it weren’t for Redstone Arsenal and the Von Braun rocket team’s pioneering work for the Army. The city is proud to be a military community that plays a critical role in the defense of our nation. More than many communities, the residents understand the sacrifices Service members and their families make.

Perhaps Huntsville’s understanding and appreciation come from the large number of local citizens who have served in the military. Maybe they still have the patriotic excitement that the space race generated in the 1960s.  Or, maybe the patriotism comes from the defense jobs that give many of their citizens a closer look at the price of freedom that the members of the Armed Forces pay. Either way, in Huntsville, Alabama, military members are celebrated in the highest regard. Whether you're planning your next family vacation or looking to explore on your own, Rocket City welcomes veterans and active duty servicemembers with a variety of attractions, events, and military discounts.

1. Veterans Memorial Park

The Huntsville Veterans Memorial, dedicated on Veterans Day, 11.11.11, honors and pays tribute to all veterans for their "Courage", "Sacrifice", and "Duty". The Memorial has become a hallowed place that inspires visitors to reflect, remember and honor veterans. It provides an educational venue to teach visitors about our military past, the cost of war, and sacrifices made to ensure our freedom.

2. U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum

The Museum is dedicated to promoting and disseminating the accomplishments of American military men and women. The emphasis is on participants of World War I and subsequent conflicts, whose survivors and families can use the Museum facilities to reminisce on their own experiences and those of parents, grandparents, and other close relatives. The Museum displays more than 30 historical military vehicles from World War I to the present, including the oldest surviving jeep, the Ford Pygmy.

Free admission is available for those currently serving in the United States Military – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard as well as Active Duty and Reservists, National Guardsman (regardless of status), U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and First Responders, up to five family members with valid ID .

3. Armed Forces Week

Each summer visitors are encouraged to take the week to honor the service and sacrifice of men and women who are a part of the armed forces both past and present. From concerts to softball games, food trucks to fireworks, you won’t want to miss these local events. Along with the festivities, several local attractions offer free or discounted admission to active and retired military and their families including the Huntsville Botanical Garden, Burritt on the Mountain, the Earlyworks Children’s Museum, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum, and The Weeden House.

4. Military Appreciation Nights at Huntsville Havoc and Trash Panda games

Whether you’re a Baseball or a Hockey fan, get your competitive spirit flowing at a local sports game. Both the Huntsville Havoc and the Rocket City Trash Pandas offer Military Nights with special pre and post game festivities and tributes to the men and women who have served in the armed forces. Additionally, throughout the regular season, present a valid military ID at the ticket office to receive $2 off on admission to any game .

Havoc Hockey : During Military Appreciation night Huntsville honors Veterans, activity duty, retirees, members of the National Guard, reserves and their dependents with free ticket vouchers to the game. The players will proudly sport custom designed military themed jerseys on the ice and auction them off after the game.

Rocket CIty Trash Pandas : Head out to Toyota Field for a Military Tribute Night in partnership with Redstone Arsenal. Fans will be awestruck by the pregame activities featuring a parachute team, color guard, flag presentation and more. Finish the night with a patriotic firework display and live music performance.

5.  Military Camping Only at Redstone Arsenal

The sky’s the limit for your next family-friendly vacation. Enjoy the great outdoors while relaxing in the comfort of your RV (or tent) at Redstone Arsenal MWR RV Park. The campground is exclusively for active or retired military, DoD civilians and NASA employees.

6 . Memorial Day Weekend Celebration

Remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to their country during Memorial Day Weekend. Take a stroll through Huntsville and visit the museums, monuments, and memorials on an interactive journey of U.S. military history. Stop and see the oldest surviving military Jeep in the world at the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum or grab a picnic and head to the park for a relaxing day of remembrance.

7. Veterans Day Celebration

November 11th in Huntsville is a special day thanks to the longtime partnership between the local residents and military community in the area. Along with special celebrations like the Veterans Day Parade, Veterans Day Breakfast, and Veterans Dinner, many local businesses and restaurants will offer deals for veterans and specials to celebrate the day.
