  • About the Murray River

Murray River Day Trips

We have lots of Murray River day trips visiting the world renowned Barossa Valley, Flinders Rangers, Hahndorf, and Adelaide city. Book now!

Located less than an hour from Adelaide, the Barossa is arguably Australia’s most well-known wine region and one of many Murray River day trips available.

Rolling hills and vineyards extend as far as the eye can see, making it the perfect spot for a day trip, either by car or on bike. The Barossa features more than 80 cellar doors, including internationally acclaimed wineries such as Penfolds, Henschke and Seppeltsfield.

The picturesque towns of Tanunda, Angaston and Nurioopta offer a variety of gourmet restaurants and eateries, featuring local produce. Stop by Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop and Cafe or the Barossa Farmers Market to meet suppliers, winemakers and the characters that call this award-winning region home.

The quaint town of Handorf is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, built by Prussian settlers back in 1839. The traditional, tree-lined Main Street is filled with German-style pubs, bakeries, smallgoods and gift shops, which sell everything from cuckoo clocks to wooden folk art.

Hahndorf is a food and wine lover’s paradise. Located about 30 minutes’ drive from Adelaide, it’s nestled in the Adelaide Hills, one of the country’s premier wine regions.

Countless cellar doors are a stone’s throw from the town, including renowned labels Shaw and Smith, Nepenthe and Bird in Hand.

The town’s many restaurants and bars showcase the region’s stellar wines, while craft breweries and a gin distillery are just down the road. Visitors to Hahndorf also have the opportunity to sample artisan cheeses, honey, smoked goods, chutneys and chocolate made by various producers.

Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges, with its rocky gorges, ancient cliffs and red dirt roads, contains some of Australia’s most stunning scenery. It’s located about 500 kilometres north of Adelaide and includes the Flinders Ranges National Park, with its abundance of native flora and fauna.

Explore Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, the Aboriginal Dreaming Trail and Wilpena Pound. The massive bowl, which looks like a crater, is almost 100 kilometres wide, and the only way in is through an 11-kilometre-long gorge.

One of the best ways to see this ancient natural structure, though, is from the air. A visit to the Flinders Ranges is also not complete without a ride on a century-old steam train, nicknamed the Coffee Pot, along the Pichi Pichi Railway. The restored locomotive is believed to be the last of its kind in the world and runs on the only remaining portion of the narrow-gauge Ghan railway line, which was built in the 1870s.

Adelaide, colloquially known as the City of Churches, is the capital city of the state of South Australia. But it’s known for much more than religious structures. Adelaide is a cultural delight. From its numerous festivals to its pristine beaches and sporting achievements at Adelaide Oval, there is something for everyone.

Adelaide is the gateway to some of the world’s best wine regions, so it’s no surprise the city serves up an incredible food and beverage offering. By day, there is the Adelaide Central Market, Glenelg Beach and the Jam Factory. But by late afternoon, it’s time to take a wander down the main and side streets to explore some of the many restaurants, bars and pubs, containing some of the state’s best produce.

Murray River River Cruises and Tours

Murray river cruises, cruising the murray river is one of the most amazing and surprising experiences you'll have..

The Murray is much more than a river, it is quintessentially Australian experience. Within a relatively short distance from Adelaide and Melbourne you can experience jaw-dropping beauty, diverse history and luxury all surrounded by a sense of peace that has to be experienced to understand.

As the Murray carves its way through our sun-burnt and contrasting landscape you'll discover a new part of the world that's not overrun with tourists and will allow you time to reconnect with yourself, family and friends.

Enjoy a Proud Mary Cruise

Join the intimate cruising vessel, the Proud Mary to discover the Murray River's eco-system at its best. Only a 45 minute drive from Adelaide the vessel embarks and disembarks guests from Murray Bridge , where garaging is available for those wishing not to transfer via our luxury Expedition coach. Our cruises operate 365 days a year and include all meals, prepared exclusively by our resident chefs, private river view en-suite accommodation and daily nature based shore excursions.

Offering both 5 night and 2 night cruise, the Proud Mary gives you an excellent opportunity to see the river environment in a different perspective and may allow you to view some of the nocturnal wildlife, especially birds such as pelicans, night herons, owls and coots. Our experienced and friendly staff will ensure all your personal needs are attended to every step of the journey, so sit back, relax and experience the beautiful Murray River at its best aboard the Proud Mary cruising vessel.

Cruises on Australia's Murray River

The Murray River and its surroundings are normally overlooked as a significant cruising region of international appeal but many visitors are now discovering the Murray River is a wonderfully natural and great place enjoy. A slow river that easily touches your soul and satisfies the inner spirit.

Spud Hilton, San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer recently stated "The Murray is the ultimate lazy river, a 100-million-year-old ribbon that winds 1,470 miles through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, passing farms, Aboriginal homelands, red gum forests, holiday cottages, arid scrub and towering ochre-colored limestone cliffs festooned with snow-white cockatoos."

Mornings you'll find mirror-perfect water, not yet disturbed by by a sole. As the mist gently rises over the water, golden sunrays pierce the huge river red gums and pelicans silently look for fish as they'd done the night before. You should encounter incredible wildlife including kangaroos, emus, koalas, goannas, kookaburras and much more. You'll find other early risers will enjoy the serenity with you but there's plenty of quiet spots to be with yourself and a nice cup of tea or coffee.

Traffic along the river is fairly minimal. You'll find milk boats, fishing craft, some ferries in South Australia, occasional small paddleboats and a diverse amarda of houseboats (Murray River is the houseboating capital of Australia). The Murray is used for by watersports enthusiasts with ski boats and canoes and kayaks .

Part of the rich history of Australia is it's Murray-Darling paddle steamers . The Murray River was used by more than a hundred paddle steamers and barges during the heydays to the late 1800's to deliver supplies to settlements upstream and returned loaded with wool and wheat. When the railroads opened up the territory by 1890, the paddle steamers ceased as a popular mode of transportation. Nowadays a few remain for leisure cruising on the Murray yet Australia still has the largest range of active paddle steamers in the world.

Naturally on each cruise you'll receive a mixture of information on river history, folklore, environmental information, free time to chat, relax and much more. Some longer cruises allow you the opportunity to get off the boat and experience Aboriginal culture, shearing exhibitions and other tours to learn, engage and explore the local region. You can enjoy local walks at some of the historic towns or cliff top climbs.

Back on board while the rugged and beautiful world of the Murray River landscapes slowly pass you by, you'll stay in comfortable and clean cabins on overnight accommodation for the longer cruises. Most cruises offer meal and food options. Short river cruises may offer you light snacks or cafeteria style food, while the longer overnight cruises offer great dining with food that is professionally prepared (and yes you can even experience Vegemite if you want one of Australia's great challenges).

One of the greatest things you'll take away from your Murray River cruise is an appreciation of the Murray's abundant beauty and intrinsic value to Australia's culture and meaning. Aboriginal occupation of the region in some parts dates back over 40,000 years. There are opportunities for guided indigenous walks, where guides talk and showcase the importance of the land and their relationship with the river. You'll enjoy the dreamtime story as different Aboriginal tribes and clans offer their stories of the land and river. The stories connect you to their ancient culture and give you a deep insight to the need to protect Australia's most important river.

Still not sure you're going to have a great time?

As you sit back and absorb one of the world's most incredible and diverse river systems you can watch the captain slowly guide the boat around the myriad of river bends. Each bend unfolds a new view, new landscape and new secret that will keep you guessing and wondering. But the biggest question you may have is "will the captain let me drive?" now that would top off your Murray River "no worries" cruising experience!

OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR

Join our Murray River Cruise Tour from Adelaide, as we travel through the rolling hills and Mallee Outback to Australia’s longest river, the Murray River. The Murray River provides a much-needed source of water to his dry landscape. The landscape is rich in green vineyards and golden citrus orchids.

Our Murray River Cruise Tour begins as we travel through Mount Barker, Monarto and the Mallee Outback landscape, prior to boarding the famous riverboat cruise of Australia’s longest river. During your river cruise, you will glide past large rocky cliffs and green willows which are located along the banks of the Murray. The river has dramatically changed over time, and you will gain an insight into the erosion which has taken place on the banks of the river over time.

River Red Gum trees are the dominant species of flora which you will find within the area. Red Gum Trees require a lot of water to survive, and renowned for dropping their limbs. Red Gum Trees date back thousands of years and are significantly big in height and diameter. As well as various forms of plantation, you can also take in the many species of bird life which reside by the Murray River. Enjoy coffee or tea and a fabulous buffet lunch whilst listening to the many historical stories of the river, to add another dimension to your experience.

Mannum is the location along the Murray where paddle steamers were first introduced to. Mannum is formally known as the gateland to the harsh inland of Australia, making the area historically significant.

From Mannum, take the time to explore through the charming villages of the Adelaide Hills. During our journey back to Adelaide, out Murray River Cruise Tour takes a slight detour and stops at Melba’s Chocolate Factory where you will be able to purchase some goods to take home to family and friends.

The Murray River Cruise Tour is perfect for those hoping for a relaxing afternoon spent on Australia’s longest river. Take in the sights of the Murray River, whilst learning about the proud history of the region.

Domestic border restrictions have ended for nearly all States, meaning you:

  • don’t need to apply for a border pass
  • won’t need a Covid test
  • won’t need to quarantine

However, some States and service operators do require proof of vaccination. So all that is required to travel for most Discover Australia packages is to be fully vaccinated. Even WA has now opened up! It is expected that any remaining temporary restrictions will end or ease over coming weeks – since all governments have detailed strategies to live with Covid and to enable their tourism industry to flourish again. See current travel requirements here .

Many travel insurance providers are now offering good cover for Covid, including:

  • Travel disruptions and additional expenses due to Covid
  • Positive Covid test before travel
  • Positive Covid test during travel (including need to change travel arrangements / isolation)
  • Cancellation Cover
  • Medical expenses cover

Insurance cover can be very inexpensive, like only $150 for three weeks in Europe # . We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance with Covid cover. Day 1: Arrive Adelaide

Arrive in Adelaide and make your way to the Stamford Plaza Adelaide and check in. The day is yours to explore Adelaide at your own leisure.

Day 2: Board the Outback Heritage Cruise You will be transferred from your hotel to historic Mannum to board the Murray Princess. Historic Mannum, the birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication, head upriver while you enjoy a Welcome Dinner. As we cruise under floodlight to our overnight mooring at Caurnamont, you may see nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank. Watch for kangaroos, hairy-nosed wombats, tortoises, egrets and many other species. Our on-board entertainer provides music for the night owls.

Day 3: Cruise the Murray River

Daybreak and it’s time for the keen photographers to be out to capture the special light and the morning movement of wildlife. Prolific birdlife includes pelicans, wrens and swans. Enjoy a leisurely morning and lunch cruising upriver to Blanchetown through one of 13 locks which maintain the flow and levels of the river’s water. This afternoon we moor opposite to the township of Blanchetown for our overnight anchorage. As the last rays of the sun fade, we visit Burk Salter Boutique Winery and enjoy wine tasting at the cellar door which is fitted out with beautiful red gum bars. After dinner, join us for all the fun and excitement, and participate in our “Murray River Cup”.

Day 4: Cruise the Murray River

After breakfast we cruise downriver to picturesque Swan Reach. The town was first settled in the 1850s, was originally the largest of five sheep and cattle stations in the area and is now home to native flower and fruit growers. The original Swan Reach homestead is now the Swan Reach Hotel where you can enjoy an ale or cappuccino overlooking the Murray River (additional cost). Join a walking tour and visit the Swan Reach Museum (gold coin donation at entry). Cruise downriver after lunch and take in the tranquillity as the landscape slides by. When we arrive at Sunnydale, it’s all ashore for the Woolshed Show as we recreate typical Australian woolshed history. Later we visit the Native Wildlife Shelter where some of South Australia’s most interesting native animals are cared for. And then of course, there is the great Aussie Barbecue – cooked and served in a bush setting on the banks of the mighty Murray River. Optional tour: Sunnydale Nocturnal Tour. Additional cost and bookings can be made on board through your Guest Services Attendant. For details, see ‘Optional Onshore Tours & Activities’ in your Cruising Guide.

Day 5: Cruise the Murray River

After an optional early morning Bush Tucker Breakfast* or bush walk with the Captain, the vessel cruises slowly downriver past magnificent cliffs scoured by the river over millions of years. We reach Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve, one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, for a step back in time – tens of thousands of years – for a guided boardwalk tour to view ancient rock carvings and to learn about Aboriginal history in the area. We return to the vessel to cruise downriver to Younghusband. Along the way, adventure seekers can also take a scenic tender boat ride. Tonight, join your fellow guests for a delicious final night dinner and enjoy the evening entertainment.

*Optional tour: Bush Tucker Breakfast. Additional cost and bookings can be made on board through your Guest Services Attendant. For details, see ‘Optional Onshore Tours & Activities’ in your Cruising Guide.

Day 6: Adelaide

We leave Younghusband and head back to Mannum. After breakfast we reluctantly say farewell as we arrive at the Mannum Wharf. Be transferred from Mannum to Adelaide for a two night stay at the Stamford Plaza Adelaide. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure.

Day 7: Adelaide Barossa Food & Wine Experience

This morning be picked up at your hotel for your full day Barossa Food and Wine Tour. Your first stop is Pindarie Wines, a family owned and award winning cellar door. A family winemaker will share the story of this stunning property and will lead you through tastings, with cheese, in the all-charm sandstone stables converted into a cellar door. Then, it’s coffee and cake on the verandah, or in winter, cosied up around the fire. There’s time for fun photos by a haystack framed by bucolic views dominated by shiraz vines.

Provenance Barossa was the original home of Penfolds in the Barossa which played a key role in the local wine industry since the early 1900’s. Provenance Barossa is home to an exclusive collection of food and beverage businesses offering unique experiences, and you will have free time to explore this popular destination.

Lunch is at the beautiful Lambert Estate, with panoramic vineyard views, halls of local art, and a sun-drenched balcony in summer or by a giant crackling fire midyear. It’s a private party where you will be treated to wine tastings along with family anecdotes and wine notes. After a hearty two-course lunch, why not take your coffee and 'a Chocolatier' (chocolate port) out on to that balcony.

A photo stop at Mengler Hill affords fabulous sweeping Valley views, before the next taste-buds-tempting exercise at the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company.

Sit down to a flight of local Vineyard Road wines and chocolate, with an expert guide revealing why they meld so well. A viewing wall showcases the crafting of more than 250 chocolate products, including the newest ruby flavor. Then, browse the collection for gifts to take home, or will they make it that far?

Day 8: Time to Head Home

Time to say farewell, check out of the hotel and make your way home.

This is a sample itinerary only and is subject to change due to weather, water levels and other operational requirements. Cruises reserves the right to amend itineraries and tours without notice. Pre-bookings are essential, additional cost.
