Reviewed: MSC Cruise Wi-Fi Service (Speed, Reliability, Cost, & More)

Heading on an MSC cruise and wondering about internet access while at sea? You’re not alone.

It wasn’t that long ago that having the internet on a cruise was a luxury. These days, it’s practically a necessity to be online. Whether it’s simply checking in at work, staying in touch with people back home, or watching a favorite show on Netflix, there’s no shortage of reasons to be online… even while on vacation.

So if you’re about to take a cruise aboard MSC, here’s what you’ll want to know about wi-fi, internet, and being online during the trip.

What Wi-Fi Packages Are Offered on MSC?

When it comes to accessing the internet, you have two different options for levels of service on MSC. The cruise line offers a basic “Browse” service and a “Browse & Stream” service.

MSC doesn’t specify any speed difference between the two and both say that they allow for “text on messenger services, browse the web and send emails using your devices.”

The difference is that the “Browse & Stream” service allows for things like streaming Netflix and other services and video chat. In general, we suggest always getting the top-tier service when on any cruise as it offers the highest speeds and the most access that people are used to back home.

With both options you can choose to buy a package for the entire cruise or a 24-hour pass if you want only to access for the day.

How Much Does Wi-Fi Internet Cost on MSC?

What you pay for internet access depends on a few factors.

First, there is a 20% discount for booking a wi-fi package ahead of your cruise. Onboard prices are higher. Second, you’ll pay more for the higher-end service that allows streaming versus the more basic service.

Finally, what you’ll pay also depends on how many devices you want to connect. The lowest priced offering offers a connection for just one device. If you need more than that, you’ll pay extra. Below are the prices seen on a recent cruise:

How Fast Is the Wi-Fi Service?

During a recent cruise we put the wi-fi through the paces with the “Browse & Stream” package. Over the course of the trip, we tested the internet speed multiple times and consistently returned speeds in the 4-5 Mbps range.

Now that’s considerably slower than what you’ll experience at home. Compared to other cruise lines, however, it’s right on par. We’ve been on cruises with other lines where the service has been as slow as <1 Mbps (frankly, unusable) to ships where we’ve seen 9-12 Mbps. But on average, 4-5 Mbps is a decent speed.

That said, we were actually impressed of the feel of the speed. Normally that sort of speed feels sluggish when browsing the web and watching video can be grainy.

Our impression was the speed — while still slow by standards at home — was faster than the speed tests suggest. Websites loaded relatively quickly and streaming video started grainy, but quickly presented in HD.

Do I Have to Buy Access for Every Device? Can I Share Access?

On most cruise lines, if you purchase access for one device that means you can only use one device at a time. So if you connect with your phone, you can logout and then access via your laptop if you want.

MSC is different. In this case, whichever device you connect with first is the one you are locked into for the entire cruise. So if you want to have internet on your phone but then login with your laptop to check in on work, you’ll have to purchase access for two devices.

As well, if you are traveling as a couple and two people want to share access during the day (few people need to be connected 24 hours a day), then you have to purchase access for multiple devices.

Can I Stream Music or Movies on the Wi-Fi?

Sometimes one of our favorite thing to do is to binge a show while on a cruise as we have more time to relax than usual. Or sometimes there is a game that you don’t want to miss so you want to stream it while on vacation.

In this case, if you have the “Browse & Stream” service, then you can stream programming with the service. For instance, during our recent cruise we streamed auto racing. It took about 20-30 seconds for the picture to clear up, but then it was sharp while we watched.

While we didn’t personally stream music, given the lower bandwidth requirements, it should be no issue.

Can I Make FaceTime Calls on the Ship’s Wi-Fi?

Want to stay in touch back home? One of the best options is to use a program like FaceTime for Apple users or video chats on WhatsApp. And if you opt for the “Browse & Stream” package, then these chats are available to use.

MSC specifically lists “video chat” as one of the features available with the higher-end package. However, it is not listed on the less expensive “Browse” offer.

Can I Text Message Over the Wi-Fi Service?

Texting is how many of us communicate these days, and it’s helpful for checking in back home, talking to others on the ship, and sending quick notes.

One thing to know is that you can text through the MSC app to others on the ship for no charge. But if you connect to the wi-fi, then texting is also available like normal. We used the wi-fi to message both iPhone and Android users.

One thing to note is that another member of our party was somehow able to send/receive messages sporadically while on Ocean Cay (MSC’s private island) despite not being connected to any wi-fi service at all and having the phone on airplane mode.

Does the Wi-Fi Internet Extend to Ocean Cay?

If you’re sailing on MSC from the United States, then it’s likely your cruise will include a port of call at the cruise line’s private island, Ocean Cay. In fact, some trips include overnight stays here.

In that case, it is nice to know that if you have an internet package, then yes, you can use it while on Ocean Cay. You will have to switch networks from the one provided on the ship to the one provided on the island, but you’ll have full access just like you were onboard.

Do I Have to Buy Internet Access to Use MSC’s App?

Like other cruise lines, MSC offers a cruise line app that has things like the daily schedule, guides to restaurants, bars, and things to do on the ship, spend tracking, and much more.

The app is completely free to download and requires you to connect to the ship’s wi-fi to use. However, you don’t have to pay for internet access. You are able to connect the app to the wi-fi and use it for free without buying a package.

Does MSC’s Wi-Fi Allow You to Use a VPN?

While MSC doesn’t specifically mention anything about using a virtual private network when accessing the internet, we tried it out during a recent cruise. The results were hit and miss.

Using ExpressVPN, we were able to connect and then surf the internet as normal. We noticed no reduction in speed or other hiccups that can be associated at times with using one of these services.

That said, not everything was perfect. We noticed that when connected through the VPN that the MSC app did not work correctly. When we disconnected, the app began working again normally.

Can I Work or Do Schoolwork With the Wi-Fi?

These days, many people want to cruise but still keep up with things back home such as work or school. So would you be able to do that?

In general, we found speeds to be 4-5 Mbps throughout the cruise. While that’s on the slower end of connections, using the web still seemed fairly fast, albeit slower than you would be used to on land.

But perhaps just as importantly, we didn’t notice a “roller coaster” when it came to the connection. Often on cruises the connection seems to cut in and out or slow down. On this trip (albeit close to land most of the time and with good weather), the connection was stable.

In that case, we’d think that doing work that requires light online access should be just fine. For instance, a video chat with multiple other people would likely be difficult. However, if you needed to talk to one person via video, it would likely be fine. As well, if you need to watch a recorded video for school, that should be no issue.

Lighter work like email, submitting assignments, or accessing websites for research should be easy, although maybe slightly slower than you’re used to.

Is MSC’s Wi-Fi Worth It?

In the case of our test, we paid $14.39 per day before the cruise (and evidently before a recent price hike) for the “Browse & Stream” package. Today, the price is significantly higher.

During our tests, we consistently saw speeds in the 4-5 Mbps range, which is decent for a cruise across any line. What impressed us was that the connection was relatively stable. It’s common on many trips for it to seem to go in and out, but we experienced little of that sort of issue. When streaming video, it turned to HD quality within less than a minute and then stayed there. Browsing the web was quick (for a cruise ship), albeit slower than on land. We also like that service extends to Ocean Cay, providing more value.

In that case, we were pleased with the service and while we think internet prices on any cruise are expensive, if you need it, then it’s worth the cost.

The one issue we have is that we paid for one device access. Normally that means you can switch between devices, but only have one connected at a time. Therefore, multiple people traveling together can share one connection.

However, MSC doesn’t allow this. The first device you connect is your one device, and that’s it. So if you have to connect multiple devices during the cruise, then expect to pay significantly more.

Im confused as to the prices for the wifi package , it seems more expensive per person for 2 or more devices to connect to the internet For one device pp it’s £56 but for 2 it’s £105 per person . Surely it should be £105 for 2 devices not per person ? Any idea . Thanks

I’m thinking you’re looking at the price per person for one device and then the price per person for two devices (so four devices overall).

Likely the satellite positioning for people in Europe and NA, few in the middle of the Atlantic, I had very bad internet on cruise from Dubai to Rome and from NA to Hawaii once I got away from land. As long as I can download podcasts Im happy.. although have 4 devices I use, ipad, laptop, phone and Itouch so likely use my laptop only, I wont pay for 4 devices..

I’ve just returned from an 18-day transatlantic cruise on the MSC Divina, so I’ll let you know my experience with MSC’s WiFi.

Before the cruise, I purchased the two-device browse and stream. I hoped to use this with my travel router, but that didn’t work (it did on Celebrity a few months earlier).

Because of this, I purchased an additional device, which brought the total for three devices up to over $600.

Everything worked as you described while we were in the Caribbean. However, when we turned left at Barbados and headed out across the Atlantic, that’s where things rapidly fell apart.

From then on, the WiFi was basically unusable. The most popular place on the ship was the Internet “helpdesk”. Honestly, I even heard some passengers discussing banding together to complain because the service was so poor.

Once we got to mainland Europe, the WiFi was back to speed, but with the annoying factor that everything would load the Norwegian version of its website. So, you were constantly trying to work out how to change the language and currency to US (or also the UK in my case).

I did complain and was refunded around $60, which considering the WiFi was basically unusable for about half the trip, is disgusting.

Otherwise, the cruise was absolutely excellent and I couldn’t fault it. It’s a shame MSC lets itself down with their horrible technology and outdated policies.

You didn’t comment on speed in the middle of sea. I was on a MSC cruise from Port Canaveral to Nassau and Ocean Cay. I found certain time connection was slower doing office work and other times fine. Did you have any issue like that?

Our cruise went from Port Canaveral to Ocean Cay, with an overnight stop. There wasn’t much time spent at sea. But even when there was, I noticed no drop off in speed.

How much is WIFI on MSC Cruises - Price of the packages & more

Onboard MSC Cruises' ships, only guests travelling in any of the MSC Yacht Club cabins will get free WiFi. For the rest of passengers, WiFi is at an additional cost, the same as on most of the other cruise lines.

The WiFi network is however available and accessed by buying an internet package either before your cruise or whilst you are aboard the ship.

In this article, we will cover the cost, type of packages and other useful information that you might need. 

How much does WiFi cost on MSC Cruises?

This is entirely dependent on which package you buy. The cheapest package starts from R266 (US$16) for a 2-night cruise, where you can browse the web, send and receive emails and images and chat on messenger apps with only 1 device connected.

There are packages for up to 4 devices, but this pushes up the price, as well as if you choose to stream and browse, rather than just browse.

The packages are structured in three ways:

• The length of the cruise (number of nights);
• The number of devices using the connection, between 1 & 4;
• Browsing only or browsing and streaming.

MSC WiFi review

WiFi connection aboard MSC Cruises is via satellite, so that you are able to be connected even when far out at sea. There is connection throughout the ship, but it can be patchy when you are in your cabin.

Your best options for a steady signal are to go and sit in the reception area or in one of the public hot-spots. If there is stormy weather, bear in mind that this can affect the signal, therefore you may find that the signal drops periodically. Overall, the cruise line has improved their connectivity.

Tip : A good way to reduce the amount of internet you use onboard, is to write your emails on your tablet, computer or phone before connecting to the network. I usually write all my mails offline and then connect to the onboard wireless network, copy, paste and send!

Do mobile phones (cell phones) work on cruise ships?

If the ship is either close enough to land to pick up a signal or if the ship itself is connected to a maritime network provider then they do work. Bear in mind that if you connect to the ship's cell phone system, you will be charged at international roaming rates , which gets very expensive, very quickly.

If you have to make a phone call that cannot be made via WiFi, this is your only option on your cell.

Alternatively, if you have an app that works with WiFi for calls, texts and so on, then you can connect to the ship's WiFi network, which usually works out to be significantly cheaper.

We recommend that you buy a prepaid internet package so that you don't have to worry about going over budget.

Don’t forget to put your phone into airplane mode and enable WiFi so that you don’t accidentally get calls or large messages on roaming charges!

Can you text on a cruise ship without WiFi?

You can, by connecting to the ship's cellular system. It is however very pricey as the texts are usually charged at international roaming rates.

If you can avoid sending texts and rather use an app that connects to the WiFi, this is much easier on the pocket! Alternatively, wait until you are on land and send it using the local carrier - it is cheaper than the at sea rates, but still expensive if you are on roaming.

Should I pay for WiFi on an MSC cruise?

This entirely depends on whether you wish to access the internet or not. Almost without exception, WiFi aboard an MSC cruise ship is not free of charge, (for MSC Yacht Club travellers, it is free), so you will have to pay for connectivity.

If you can manage to go the duration of your cruise without being in contact with people not travelling with you, assuming that you are not using the ship's cellular service, then no need to buy a WiFi package.

However, if you want to share your best pics to Instagram or Facebook, WhatsApp your mom or Telegram your bestie, then you definitely should buy an internet package!

At Hupla, we recommend a technology break for your holiday, so if you can get away with not accessing the world wide web, then totally relax, connect with family or friends and get back to the phone when you get home!

Does WhatsApp work without WiFi?

WhatsApp can only work with an internet connection, whether it is because you are connected to WiFi or connected to a cellular system where you can send and receive data.

If you anticipate that you are going to use the app whilst cruising, then we recommend buying an internet package. Make sure that you choose a package that offers WhatsApp as part of it, as well as whether it is for text only chat messages and images or video calling.

Where can I get access to the internet on an MSC ship?

The MSC ships are equipped with internet cafés, which have a number of stations available for clients to use and you can get WiFi in your cabin.

You will still need to have an internet package to get online in this way. The newer ships also have printing available at the internet café.

Alternatively, you can use any personal device that has WiFi connectivity available – laptops, cell phones, tablets, etc – and use your package for the cruise duration.

Free WiFi in ports of call

Most of the ports around the world (excluding the Ocean Indian Islands) will have free WiFi. At least every port that I have cruised too. 

Before you step ashore, ask one of the crew members -  they often don't get enough WiFi onboard for their needs, so will often hit the WiFi when they are ashore. 

Nowadays, a lot of coffee shops offer free WiFi if you purchase a drink or food. 

What are the WiFi packages that MSC offers?

There are two packages available currently (March 2021) on MSC Cruises’ ships. The first is the Browse Internet Cruise Package , which uses less bandwidth, due to less functionality, and is therefore cheaper. The second is the Browse and Stream Cruise Package for those passengers that wish to use video features, such as video calls or streaming.

MSC states that you save 20% by buying a package in advance rather than once on the ship.

What is the Browse Internet Cruise Package?

The Browse Internet Cruise Package has the following five features: 

• Unlimited data
• 24-hour access
• Browse the web
• Send and receive emails and images
• Chat on messenger apps such as WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and so on.

This package does not allow passengers to view videos, access video or music streaming websites (such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Music, YouTube etc.) nor video chat .

What are the package options for the Browse Internet Cruise Package:

• 1 DEVICE: A great choice for those that wish to connect one device only and are budget conscious.
• 2 DEVICES: Excellent for when you need two connections, whether it is a personal device and work device or for two friends, couples or family.
• 3 DEVICES: Ideal family option or for when you want two cell phones and a laptop (or tablet) connected.
• 4 DEVICES: A superfamily option, especially for those that can’t bear the thought of not being connected to the socials! Of course, also suited to the scenario where two cell phones and two tablets or laptops need to be online.

What are the prices for the Browse Internet Cruise Package:

To conclude

If you want to send or receive any emails while you are cruising the only option is to buy an internet package (WiFi package) for the ship, unless you can wait to be in port to send or receive, assuming that you can access a free WiFi hotspot somewhere in port or you can use your cell phone plan. 

If anything has to happen to any of your friends or family at home and you have someone who has to get hold of you urgently, your contact on-shore can always contact the ship directly or contact your travel agent / MSC Cruises office that will relay the message to the ship. The crew onboard will then pass the message to you.

Msc cruises adds new low cost packages and fast connectivity for internet on a cruise..

There’s a trend taking place and MSC Cruises knows it. Passengers are tired of getting gouged with exorbitant prices  to access internet on a cruise. And even then, it has been unreliable or painfully slow. Who hasn’t watched in frustration as the timer ticked away while waiting for a basic web page or email to load?

Cruise lines and the satellite providers knew that it was important for cruisers to stay connected while at sea. Whether for work, social networking or simply to find what to do ashore or sports scores, cruise ship guests needed their internet. It still isn’t unusual to find a price of $199 for 450 (unreliable) minutes.

A new player to onboard internet, Marlink, has been a provider of communications to remote areas around the world for a long time. Now, MSC Cruises and Marlink have created a way for guests to connect at high-band width no matter where they are sailing.

Guests can select their internet packages based on their personal needs and amount of devices used.

New internet packages to choose

• Social Package: for guests who want to connect to social media, post photos and stay in touch with friends and family. This package gives guests 24/7 access to social networks on one device. Price:  $4.50/day or $16.50 for a 7-night cruise.
•  Surfer Package:  good for those who want a little more access for social, access to web news and sports reports and check email. One device only. Price: $11/day or $33 for a 7-night cruise.
• Streamer Package:  offers full internet access without limitations and at the fastest speeds. Just like back home, guests have full access to web sites, social media plus audio and video streaming. Good for up to four devices. Price: $22/day or $66 for a 7-night cruise.

Passengers can book their internet packages before their cruise or while onboard. Packages can be upgraded or recharged during the cruise if more time and accessibility is needed.

This new internet program is currently available on the MSC Divina in the Caribbean and the MSC Preziosa in the Mediterranean. MSC Cruises will roll out the new internet service to the entire fleet in the next few months.

Hi Mike, Thank you for taking the time to write. Sorry for the issue with the onboard wifi. Yes, sometimes it’s fast and other times you can’t log in. That’s not just an MSC issue, either. I am disappointed to learn that the front desk or an IT person wasn’t more caring about your concern. Sometimes I wait until after 11pm to use a ship’s internet with the hope that some people are sleeping and not online.

Most cruise lines don’t encourage streaming but many now sell packages that include streaming.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have partnered with Starlink and that should help with upload and/or download speed.

I hope the rest of your cruise goes well. If not, there’s always gelato! And chocolate!

Update. I’m on the MSC Meraviglia 12/18/22. The internet sucks badly. Ran speed test on my android and wife’s I phone. Can’t get speed over 2 mbs. Went to wifi desk complained. They could care less said that’s what happens when 5000 passengers are on board.

MSC should be pressuring other lines on many pre-cruise packages. Internet 10gb for $149, Bottle of wine in cabin $22, 40 pieces of laundry, $50. Photo pack, 10 for $90. Now need to sell sim cards on board that they know work to make more fans

speed is okay but it’s restricted way beyond videostreaming websites and the funny part is: They do not mention it and do not refund because it’s prepaid. Terrible if you really need that what is restricted it’s their policy… buy unlimited drinking pakkage or whatever, go to bar, find only few beers on the card you like: order one and after that everything is not available, hilarious

MSC joins Royal Caribbean, Carnival in making big pricing change

C ruise pricing, like hotels on land, changes based on demand. All the major cruise lines use some form of demand-based pricing where different people on the same ship can pay very different prices for the exact same accommodations.

Sometimes it makes sense to book early. That's usually the best chance to pay a lower price, but waiting can also save you money. There are times when a particular sailing does not sell well and prices will drop.

It's an inexact science that has become even more complicated as demand has increased. Deals have become more rare, at least on newer ships. but that does not mean they don't exist.

In most cases, when booking a cruise, it's best to work with a travel agent because the initial price you pay does not have to be the final price. Until final payment is due (usually about 90 days out) you can usually get onboard credit if the price drops.

That's difficult to track as an individual, but it's part of the job for a good travel agent.

Until recently all the major cruise lines also used a pricing practice that's popular with hotels. They often advertised prices that did not include port fees and taxes. That lets them show a lower, more enticing price, but it's not what people will actually pay.

That's a policy that Royal Caribbean RCL and Carnival Cruise Line have changed nationally based on a new California law. MSC Cruise plans to follow its two larger rivals and make the same pricing transparency change.

MSC will also show the final price

While California is the only state that has made showing the true price including any fees, the law, President Joe Biden has targetted hidden fees and spoke about them in an October speech.   

"The Federal Trade Commission is proposing a new rule that would ban hidden fees across the economy and require companies to show consumers the all-in pricing upfront — upfront. (Applause.) That includes what these fees are for, how much they amount to in full, and whether they are refundable," he said.

So far, efforts to pass that law have failed, but some hotels and travel booking sites have moved to advertise the full price upfront.

Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) and Royal Caribbean had to make the change in California and opted to do the same nationwide.

The cruise lines, it should be noted, were not adding on fees in the way that hotels charged resort fees for WiFi, pool access, and parking that consumers had no option to opt out of. Instead, they generally did not advertise taxes and port fees upfront which led to surprises at checkout. 

People generally expect that taxes will be added on, but new or infrequent cruisers likely did not know that port fees, which can be significant depending on your itinerary would be added. This pricing change brings pricing clarity to customers as they book.

MSC Cruises will also show the final price

MSC Cruises has been expanding its presence in the US and plans to adopt the same upfront pricing transparency as Carnival and Royal Caribbean. The change will go into effect June 26.

'This change does not impact the overall price paid by our guests or the commissionable portion of the cruise fare earned by our trusted travel partners,' the company said in a media statement .

The cruise line has been steadily growing its presence in the US and that will continue.

"MSC Cruises unveiled an expanded slate of itineraries today, aimed at offering a wider variety of vacation options for guests departing from the line’s four U.S. homeports. The company’s Winter 2025/2026 season includes seven ships with sailings from Miami, Port Canaveral, New York City, and Galveston, all of which are available for immediate booking," the cruise line shared on its website.

The expansion includes the cruise line bringing MSC Seascape to Galveston, Texas, marking its first time having a ship homeport there. MSC will also welcome a new flagship, MSC World America, which will debut in Miami in April 2025.

MSC Meraviglia Review

MSC Meraviglia is a 171,598-ton, 4,475-passenger ship with Mediterranean and Caribbean itineraries, the latter with a stop at Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island in the Bahamas. In 2023, the ship will sail from New York year-round, with cruises to the Caribbean, Bermuda and Canada/New England.

MSC has always emphasized the "Mediterranean way of life" tag for its ships, but Meraviglia marks a move away from strictly that with some international (North American) concessions. Everything is in English (signage, first language, announcements), and there is an American steakhouse.

The MSC Meraviglia Deck Plan Cleverly Keeps Most Cabins Separate from Public Areas

Meraviglia boasts concepts similar to those made popular by other lines -- a teppanyaki restaurant (Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal's Oasis-class ships); a central promenade that is almost a carbon copy of Royal Caribbean's Quantum-class ships; a high-tech theater that looks like Royal's Quantum-class Two-70; duplex suites (Royal) and so on. Then it sprinkles its own touches -- the extraordinary MSC Meraviglia Yacht Club, possibly the finest key-card-access suite enclave at sea; a chocolate shop and cafe; a link up with LEGO and Eataly and that MSC signature -- genuine Swarovski crystal studded stairs, which form the centerpiece of the main atrium.

But none of it jars. And it so easily could. Despite the sheer number of passengers, we never witnessed pinch points onboard; there is always a venue or a spot you can go to get away from the craziness. And if there is one criticism, it's just that: Everything is kept at fever pitch, from the pool parties all day and most nights, the clubs, the parades and the shows -- it's nonstop. But hey, if you like that, then this is the ship for you. What is true is that all types of passengers are catered to here, with tons of things to do on MSC Meraviglia, from theme nights to waterslides, shows, a spa, dozens of bars and restaurants, trivia games, and kids’ clubs.

The line has also improved significantly in two areas in which it often came in for criticism: food and service. It's linked up with a couple of name chefs (Carlo Cracco and the chocolatier Jean-Philippe Maury); and has clearly been working hard on training. We found service universally of a high standard.

Although there are 19 decks, the majority of MSC Meragivlia’s cabins are spread over seven of them; the rest take up small sections on decks shared with public areas. This means that, unlike on other ships, there are hundreds of staterooms that are not directly above or below busy, loud restaurants, theaters or dance clubs, making them quieter.

All in all, MSC Meraviglia is a really well thought out and considered design, which takes the best of the brand and adds an international edge, with great success.

MSC Meraviglia or MSC Seaside? Two Excellent Options with Different Styles

Travelers exploring options for a Mediterranean sailing are often torn between MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seaside . While both cruise ships offer similar European itineraries, there are a few differences worth noting. MSC Meraviglia is slightly bigger and has a few more restaurants, but it’s in the design front where they differ most: MSC Seaside is all about the outdoors, with an outdoor spa and gym area, a zipline, and an outdoor seafront promenade lined with bars, shops and sun loungers. The MSC Meraviglia promenade, however, is covered by a stunning LED dome but has the same lively vibe.

MSC Meraviglia Experiences and Price/Fare Structure

MSC offers passengers three tiers of inclusions (or “experiences”), each with its own perks and price.

Bella Experience: This is the most basic package and comes with all the standard inclusions listed above.

Fantastica Experience: This tier is only available for passengers booking a Balcony, Ocean View or Interior cabin. Perks include the opportunity to choose the cabin and its location, free in-room breakfast, discounted beverage package rates and specialty restaurant meals, and 24-hour room service (with a set delivery fee).

Aurea Experience: Available for Suite passengers only, this tier adds a few extras to Fantastica, including welcome wine and sweets, free 24-hour room service, MyChoice dining options, free access to the Solarium and the adult-only Thermal Suite, in-room robes and slippers, pillow menus, and priority boarding.

In addition to these packages, passengers seeking a more exclusive experience can book a cabin in the MSC Meraviglia Yacht Club , which is a separate section within the ship with extra perks. 24-hour butler service, dedicated concierges, a la carte meals at the Yacht Club restaurant, free minibar items, free drinks in all Yacht Club bars and lounges, free Wi-Fi, and exclusive access to a sun deck and Top Sail Lounge are only some of the Yacht Club privileges.

Even though most passengers were European back when MSC Meraviglia launched in Italy in 2017, the crowd is now more of a mix, especially for its Caribbean sailings, when passengers of all nationalities can be seen onboard. The average age is around the early 40s for adults, though with the strong emphasis on family expect literally hundreds of kids during school vacations, all of which are extremely well catered for. The only thing that some might find jarring is the fact that there are no adult-only areas on the ship.

All announcements are in five languages: English first, then Italian, Spanish, French and German.

MSC Meraviglia Dress Code

The dress code on MSC Meraviglia is mostly casual, especially during the day. Even elegant nights can be a fairly relaxed affair, so you might want to leave your dressier outfits at home.

Daytime:  During the daytime it's casual, with people wandering around in just swimsuits and flip-flops.

Evening:  In the evening it's dressier, but more smart casual than formal, except for the two "elegant" (not formal) nights per cruise. A jacket for the men and a dress for the ladies would not go amiss, but it's not strictly enforced. A suit or tux or ball gown are not necessary, though on the meet-the-captain night people go all-out.

Not permitted:  T-shirts and shorts are not allowed in the ships' public areas in the evenings. No swimwear is allowed in main dining rooms. Jeans are not allowed in the dining room on elegant nights.

After a year’s worth of travelling the globe – to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage – it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali . We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is a premium big-ship cruise brand, focusing on exquisite dining, cutting-edge amenities, Instagram-worthy public spaces chock-full of bespoke art pieces, and avant-garde onboard entertainment. Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August , the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles . Explora I, Explora Journeys

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where ageing meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs – such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic – curate sublime tasting menus. Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with a capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map – forgetting your sunscreen , for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the speciality seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crewmembers dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From around £1,818 . Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the Italian cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details – this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevvy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima. There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over-the-top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilisers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience – Vista’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley , and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year, Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year, it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul , Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs – and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. The new and improved connectivity will provide guests with fast, reliable access to the web and simple, easy to use packages , allowing them to share their holiday memories whilst away. Working with Marlink, a pioneer of business communication solutions for customers operating in remote environments, MSC Cruises will provide dynamic bandwidth to its 12 existing ships as well as the next-generation ships currently under construction including MSC Meraviglia  and MSC Seaside . Regardless of the ships’ itinerary, which touch nearly 183 ports across five continents, guests will receive continuous high-bandwidth global access. Gianni Onorato, MSC Cruises CEO commented: “We are constantly seeking new ways to innovate and enhance the guest experience aboard what is already the most modern fleet at sea. We know that staying connected whilst on holiday is increasingly more important to our guests hence we are rolling out state-of-the-art technology to allow them to stay connected whether they are looking to share experiences and memorable moments, stay in touch with friends and family, need to stay on top of work emails or simply catch up with daily news.” The new services are now live on board MSC Preziosa  currently deployed in the Western Mediterranean, and MSC Divina  in the Caribbean and will roll-out across the entire fleet over the coming months. The packages  have been designed to make it easy for guests to select the right package for their needs prior to embarkation. The Social Package is aimed at those who want to be connected 24/7 to social media, allowing them to post pictures and chat with friends. This includes popular social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Snapchat, WeChat and Pinterest. Prices start from €3.90 per day / €14.90 for a full seven day cruise.
