UNWTO becomes “UN Tourism”
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) enters a new era with a new name and brand: UN Tourism. With this new brand, the Organization reaffirms its status as the United Nations specialized agency for tourism and the global leader of tourism for development, driving social and economic change to ensure that “people and planet” are always center stage.
UN Tourism: Transforming tourism for a better worldTo achieve this goal, UN Tourism engaged the services of Interbrand, the leading global branding agency. Interbrand successfully translated the Organization’s renewed vision for tourism into a new visual identity and brand narrative.
This involved renaming the Organization, transitioning from UNWTO to UN Tourism. At the same time, a new brand narrative was meticulously crafted, one that seamlessly aligns with UN Tourism’s central mission and priorities. This narrative pivots around three main messages: the UN as a global altruistic organization, the notion of connecting humans around the world, and the concept of proactivity and movement.
Enhancing the well-being of individuals, safeguarding the natural environment, stimulating economic advancement, and fostering international harmony are key goals that are the fundamental essence of UN Tourism
By moving away from acronyms, UN Tourism adopts a more approachable stance and capitalizes on its strengths: the “UN”, signifying authority, and tourism, a simple and relatable concept for all. This change has been endorsed by the Organization’s membership, highlighting its united support for the profound transformation and reinvention of UN Tourism in recent years, as it has become more agile, visible, and ever closer to its Member States, partners and the sector as a whole.
With 160 Member States and hundreds of private sector affiliates, UN Tourism has its headquarters in Madrid, Spain, and Regional Offices in Nara (Japan) covering Asia & Pacific, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) for the Middle East, as well as forthcoming Regional Offices for the Americas (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Africa (Morocco). Its priorities center on promoting tourism for sustainable development in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Global Goals. UN Tourism promotes quality education, supports decent jobs in the sector, identifies talent and drives innovation and accelerates tourism climate action and sustainability . – UN Tourism Jan. 2024

Vietnam to welcome 17-18
million tourists this year
Việt Nam’s tourism industry has set a target to welcome 17-18 million foreign visitors in 2024, approaching the pre-pandemic record in 2019 when COVID-19 had yet to disrupt global travel.
In 2023, the figure hit 12.6 million, surpassing the initial target set earlier in the year (before China, which accounted for a third of foreign arrivals to Việt Nam pre-pandemic, announced reopening plans) by 57 per cent and achieving the adjusted goal of 12-13 million.
The number of domestic travellers, meanwhile, stood at 108 million, up 6 per cent compared to the set target. Tourism activities generated about VNĐ678 trillion (US$27.85 billion) in revenue, 4.3 per cent higher than the yearly plan.
Despite substantial recovery in 2023, the Việt Nam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) said the domestic tourism recovery will still face challenges in the year ahead. This is particularly true in the context of the unpredictable global developments stemming from economic uncertainties, regional conflicts and climate change.
Việt Nam’s socio-economic conditions remain stable; the economy continues to grow and inflation has been kept in check. But the persistent threat of disease and natural disasters are likely to create uncertainty affecting production, business activities and the daily lives of citizens.
According to forecasts from the UN World Tourism Organisation and the World Travel and Tourism Council, international travel activities may fully recover by the end of 2024, reaching the levels achieved in 2019. However, the recovery is expected to be uneven across different regions.
The ever-changing demands of international tourists require higher standards in product quality, diversity and unique experiences. The trends of integrating information technology, artificial intelligence and digital transformation are envisioned to drive the emergence of new forms of tourism.
Based on these analyses and projections, Việt Nam aims to serve 17-18 million foreign and 110 million domestic visitors this year, with an expected total revenue from tourism nearing VNĐ840 trillion.
To achieve the stated objectives, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyễn Văn Hùng has instructed the VNAT to continue focusing on advising and improving the institutional framework, policies, reviewing identified deficiencies for adjustment, and international commitments in the field of tourism. Collaboration with other ministries and sectors is emphasised to formulate policies for developing various types of products such as agricultural tourism and digital transformation in tourism. He also noted the need for attention on strengthening tourism statistics and digital transformation to enhance the effectiveness of data collection, providing reliable figures to efficiently support tourism policy planning.
The ministry also calls for enhanced training for tourism officials and workers to meet requirements of new situations, especially in terms of language proficiency and technology expertise. — VNS
Global Medical Tourism market
USD 136.93 billion in 10 years
Newark, Jan. 01, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Brainy Insights estimates that the USD 20.07 billion in 2022 global Medical Tourism market will reach USD 136.93 billion by 2032. There is a growing trend towards health and wellness tourism, with individuals seeking medical treatments, preventive care, wellness programs, and holistic health experiences. Medical tourism destinations can capitalize on this trend by offering comprehensive health and wellness packages.
Furthermore, integrating digital health technologies, including telemedicine, virtual consultations, and electronic health records, can enhance the accessibility and coordination of medical tourism services. Digital platforms can streamline pre-travel consultations, post-treatment follow-ups, and information exchange between healthcare providers and patients. Introducing new and advanced medical treatments, therapies, and procedures can attract medical tourists seeking cutting-edge healthcare solutions. Countries and healthcare providers that stay at the forefront of medical innovation can position themselves as leaders in the industry.
In addition, customized and personalized medical tourism packages catering to individual patient’s unique needs and preferences present an opportunity for service providers. Tailoring experiences that include cultural activities, recovery retreats, and concierge services can set providers apart in a competitive market.
Besides, wellness tourism, including genetic testing and personalized health assessments, is gaining traction. Medical tourism destinations can offer specialized wellness packages, including genetic evaluations and preventive health screenings, to attract individuals interested in proactive healthcare.
China eases visa application for US tourists
BEIJING: China will simplify visa applications for tourists from the United States from Jan 1, cutting the documents required, according to a notice on Friday (Dec 29) on the website of the Chinese embassy in Washington.
The move is the latest by China to revive tourism and boost the world’s second-largest economy following a slump during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tourist visa applicants in the US will no longer need to submit air ticket bookings, hotel reservations or an invitation letter, the embassy’s notice said.
Beijing earlier cleared the way for passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia to visit the country without visas from Dec 1.Visa-free treatment will run for 12 months, during which tourists from those six countries can visit China for up to 15 days. China also expanded its visa-free transit policy to 54 countries in November.
The number of inbound tourists to the country plummeted during the pandemic due to the country’s strict COVID-19 control policies.
China’s visa-free policy facilitates
travels from 6 countries
Around 214,000 people from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia entered China in December 2023, an increase of 28.5 percent compared with November, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA).
China’s unilateral visa-free policy for ordinary passport holders from these countries took effect on December 1, facilitating inbound travels from there.
Of these inbound trips, 118,000 were made by ordinary passport holders without a visa, accounting for 55.1 percent of all inbound trips from the six countries during this period. Around 91,000 visa-free entries were made for travel and business.
Thanks to the visa-free policy, ports in the southern Chinese city of Nanning welcomed many inbound travelers. Data showed that 121 inbound travel groups of nearly 2,800 people entered China through ports in Nanning in December.
Since the inception of the visa-free policy, ports in Beijing had, by December 31, witnessed more than 12,000 visa-free entries from the relevant countries.
The NIA pledged more optimized entry-exit management policies for foreigners to facilitate their business, study, work, and life in China.

The inside story of branding new ‘Nepal’
When the secretariat of the Visit Nepal 2020 campaign asked her company to brand the event, Marie-Ange Sylvain Holmgren and her staff were overwhelmed.
“People don’t realise that to design something simple is the toughest thing,” says Holmgren, pointing towards the Visit Nepal logo designed by her company Imageark . “When the secretariat asked us, we took a deep breath. We had been involved in various projects but this was something bigger than what we had ever done,” she says.
However having successfully rebranded entities like the Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Hotel Yak and Yeti and the Lumbini Museum, Imageark knew that it was not something out of their league.
The first thing her team did was single out interesting campaigns prepared by other countries. As a former communication person herself, Holmgren knew that the brand had to become a communication tool. That is why she asked her team to select campaigns which appealed to the audience. “We didn’t just want a graphic. We want it to be a communication tool, which is why we felt that the name of the country needed to be prominent.”
After going through various campaigns, Holmgren and her team realised that all successful campaigns had the name of the country highlighted extremely well. “It gives the campaign identity. The previous logo was good, but Nepal in that logo seemed like an afterthought.”
That is when they decided that ‘Nepal’ would be prominent and the whole identity of the brand would focus on Nepal. Along with the word Nepal, Holmgren also wanted to add another thing – a tika. “The first thing I realised after coming to Nepal was how everyone had a red dot on their forehead. That is why I wanted to include that because you see that everywhere. Tourists would definitely relate to this.”
Her team then suggested an added a layer of meaning to the tika. It would be the Dashain tika. Imageark’s art director Swojan Newa then suggested that the spaces in the tika didn’t look right. So they tried to do something more to it. He suggested that the spaces form Nepal’s flag to give it a nationalist touch.
“So if you look at it, the tika blesses Nepal. The tika is on Nepal and Nepal is inside the tika,” Holmgren explains.
The team then hand-drew the word ‘Nepal’, which according to Holmgren, took quite a while to finalise. After the typography was done, the team then wanted to do something different and be creative.
“Every time, we see tour promotions focusing on Nepal, we see red and blue. But we didn’t want to do that. We wanted to try something different, which is why we used yellow. Yellow is a prominent colour and is seen everywhere in Nepal. And luckily it’s a colour that at the moment is quite in too.”
After the logo was finalised, and the colour was decided, the team at Imageark then thought of adding patterns.
“We wanted to go an extra mile and do something unique. The patterns included things like rice terraces, bells, prayer wheels, prayer flags. These are things the tourist can connect to because they will see these patterns all over Nepal.”
After that, the team then created collaterals and designed maps, billboards, posters, cards and used the patterns.
“We’ve even created a design for Nepal Airlines. We made sure that Nepal Tourism Board had everything to promote Nepal. We suggested different ways they could use our design and patterns,” Holmgren adds.
She explains that a campaign is more than just a logo. It is something big, something that touches the audience which is why her team have also formed guidelines to teach people how to use the logo and the patterns they have created.
“Because a lot of people were going to use what we created, we had to do it. We want this campaign to be successful.”
Holmgren also adds that the government also takes ownership of the campaign. She shares that the Tourism Board and the Ministry has put a lot of trust in them. “They have understood what we’ve tried to do. They understood the thinking behind this brand and for us, that is huge if a client and you are on the same page.”
Holmgren shares that when they finished the 40-minute presentation, they weren’t entirely sure if the people from the Tourism Board would like what they had done. “They just wanted a brand, but we gave them an entire campaign. They were pleasantly surprised and clapped. It was a big relief because we feel this goes beyond Visit Nepal Year 2020.”

Visit Nepal 2020
Visit Nepal 2020: National Tourism Year of Nepal
While listing out one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit, Nepal doesn’t miss its place in the list. Enrich with more than 1,310 high and low Mountain , Hills and plain Terai, Nepal contains all these geographical lands within 147,181 km². Nepal’s cultural and historical heritage undoubtedly attracts the attention of visitors around the world, along with geographical diversity.
To let tourist from various country embrace the natural beauty of the country, the Nepal government launched “Visit Nepal Year” campaign to promote the tourism industry to the next level. As for now, the government has launched the project “Visit Nepal 2020” to bring around 2 million visitors to Nepal by the end of the year. The Tourism Board is also currently running Visit Nepal Europe campaign in European countries supported by Nepal’s ambassadors and diplomats to make Visit Nepal 2020 campaign successful.
History of Visit Nepal Campaign
Marred for more than a century by an autocratic, authoritarian regime, Nepal only opened its doors to tourists in the year 1950s, after the restoration of democracy. Since then, with its naturally beautiful environment, the country attracted international visitors.
Thanks to dreamy peaks, Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites, beautiful countryside and lush southern jungles, it didn’t take long for Nepal to carve a spot on the world map for itself. The government of Nepal has consistently made efforts to develop Nepal’s tourism due to the quick realization of its tourism potential and started Visit Nepal campaign. Altogether, the Nepal government already launched “Visit Nepal year 1998” and “Nepal Tourism Year 2011”.
Following the success of the former, “Visit Nepal Year 1998” and “Nepal Tourism Year 2011” Nepal’s Tourism Board decided to continue the trend with “Visit Nepal 2020” to make 2020 Nepal’s best tourism year. However, the campaign was set to be launched in 2015, and was initially scheduled to take place in 2018 to show everyone that Nepal is now a safe travelling location.
Reason Behind The Postpone of the Visit Nepal Campaign
The Visit Nepal campaign was initially planned for 2018 but was postponed to 2020 to complete the expansion of Tribhuwan International Airport and the construction of Gautam Buddha International Airport in Lumbini.
Is Tourist Visiting Nepal in the Same Ratio?
The mainstream media revealed that the 2015 earthquake completely devastated Nepal. Nevertheless, the press failed to show that the devastating every quake suffered just 12 out of 75 districts. Tourist flow in Nepal was drastically affected by news coverage, and by the end of 2015, the number decrease in half.
In 2017, the tourist flow slowly began to bounce back to the pre-earthquake levels, and in the same year, about 940,218 tourists visited Nepal. Many came for recreational activities, while others came to participate briefly to support the economic condition of Nepal.
What is the Contribution of the Nepal Government to the success of the Visit Nepal Year 2020 Campaign?
The government decided to promote a new tourism industry with at least ten new destinations in each province to make the project more successful. The government has also begun spending on tourism to build infrastructures such as airports, hotels, transportation facilities etc.
The government plans to develop at least one airport in each province for the convenience of travel such as airways. Similarly, more hotels are in the process of construction for better lodging facilities in urban areas such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and so on. Homestays are also advertised during trekking for travellers looking for a homelike experience with authentic Nepali cuisine .
Visit Nepal 2020 Tourism Board major highlighted activities
There are also plans to amend the Tourism Act during the Visit Nepal campaign. To further promote Visit Nepal 2020, Tourism Board is making convenient travel packages in the co-ordination with different travel companies. Activities such as 15th Elephant Festival, the 12th Chitwan festival also held locally.

The Visit Nepal 2020 edition of the Nepalese Tourism Year has been declared after the successive tourism years: Visit Nepal Year 1998 and Nepal Tourism Year 2011.
The Visit Nepal Campaign 2020 has been designed to welcome two million foreign tourists within the year.
The movement also targets better economic growth and making Nepal known as a beautiful and safe country to travel.
The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation had announced this campaign in 2015 to be held in the year 2018, but later it was postponed until 2020 because of delayed construction of infrastructure and renovation of the heritage sites.

What to Expect in Visit Nepal 2020?
Nepal experienced terrible devastation in the year 2015. A massive earthquake hit Kathmandu and surrounding districts and swept away much of the incredible, centuries’ old national heritages.
In the absence of these landmarks, the industry witnessed low tourism. The reconstruction of those heritage sites has been very slow.
But taking Visit Nepal Year 2020 into consideration, they are being restored more rapidly now. You will be able to see them restored to their old form next year.
Learning the lessons from the previous tourism years, Nepal has been focusing on the construction of roads in the rural areas and expansion of roads in the cities.
The construction of Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa is in its final stage.
Similarly, upgrading of Tribhuvan International Airport has been already completed.
And Pokhara Regional International Airport is under construction.
The broad reach of the internet and flourishing hotels throughout the country will make your Nepal visit a different one this time.
In spite of having an overwhelming number of destinations and activities, the Tourism Board has been working day and night to explore new destinations and activities.
Kathmandu, Pokhara, Everest Base Camp, and Annapurna Base Camp are some of the most visited destinations.
The Khaptad and Dolpo regions have yet to be discovered. Exclusive packages featuring these destinations will be available.
The government has introduced 100 new destinations over the country for sustainable tourism development highlighting tourism in 2020.
With the beginning of the tourism year, hundreds of travel agencies will try to attract you with exclusive packages to the new destinations. This will be economical for you as well.
The aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 2015 is almost over. However, many tourists still fear and feel unsafe traveling to Nepal.
The earthquake damaged the old and weak buildings made of clay.
Twelve districts of central Nepal (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Gorkha, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Dolakha, etc.) were affected by the seismic events.
In addition to this, there was minor destruction in most of the affected districts. At the same time, other regions are intact and untouched.
Nevertheless, the impact of this calamity over the Nepalese Tourism industry is not over. This decline in visits has been significant.
However, the year 2017 showed positive symptoms with a remarkable flow of international tourists into Nepal.
To mitigate the fall in the tourism sector and to rise from the ashes following the devastating incident and to remove the fear from the eyes of the travelers, the Nepal Government has come up with Visit Nepal Year 2020.
Moreover, this campaign tends to give the message to the world that Nepal is a safe place to travel.
For the same, the tourism board has already checked all the trekking trails/ hiking routes and reported that there are 35 safe hiking routes.
Apart from that, the national parks are also cleared, and the damaged heritages and landmarks are being repaired at a rapid pace.
The buildings and temples over affected districts are examined thoroughly and approved by the engineer.
At present, there is nothing to worry about in Nepal. The armed insurgency of Maoist has been over almost a decade ago.
People are well educated about tourism and its importance. The hospitality industry has flourished quite considerably in comparison to the past few years.
The telecommunication and transportation facilities extend to every nook and corner.
People are friendly and hospitable. You don’t have to worry about cross-cultural understandings.
In sum, you can confidently choose Nepal for your upcoming vacation.
