Finding the best walking shoes for travel can be tough. You want something comfortable enough to get you through a full day of wandering around, but not so comfortable that it screams “I'm a tourist!” And since nobody wants to tote around a bag (checked or otherwise) filled with shoes, the ones that do make the packing list cut need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.

Knowing that a bad pair of shoes can ruin an otherwise lovely travel day, we asked Condé Nast Traveler writers and editors (as well as shopping writers from other Condé Nast titles) to share their tried-and-true kicks, so you don't have to take a gamble on whether they'll actually be comfortable or not. Whether you're looking for sneakers , boots , flats , or sandals , we have recommendations for you. Below, more than 30 of our favorite high-quality, easy-to-pack walking shoes for travel—all cushy, supportive, and versatile—that will take you just about anywhere. Susie Plotkin, who works on Condé Nast's global email team, calls these platform boots “the perfect shoe.” She's had them for about three years, and has taken them everywhere. “My boyfriend lives in Switzerland, and they’re the shoe I wear to sightsee around Zurich. I've spent 12 hours walking around Venice in them, and regularly stomp all around Brooklyn in them. They’re a little heavy but super comfortable and can slide on and off so easily.”

A cold-weather favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , these Blundstone boots required no break-in time, and are a great all-purpose boot for fall or winter trips. The pull tabs make them easy to get back on, the shock absorption keeps your feet feeling good even after a few hours on the move, and the double stitching, durable leather, and tough outsole mean you won't be replacing them a few trips later.

Former Traveler editor Meredith Carey wears these waterproof Blondo boots almost all winter long, and brings them along on any fall and winter trips. “They look and feel like leather but I can wear them in snow and rain—I don't have to worry about my shoes surviving when I'm tromping around day-to-day in New York or a new city,” she says. They come in a host of color options, from black to brown leather to snakeskin.

Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of Vagabond's lug sole boots, and recommends a style with a wider toe for maximum comfort on long days of walking. Best for city trips, these Chelsea boots are on the bulkier side, so wear them through security to cut down on suitcase weight.

Spurrell has waxed poetic about Frye's Melissa Chelsea boots before: They're her go-to for any city trip. They look good with jeans, leggings , or dresses, pack down well, and over time, have become as comfortable as sneakers. Plus, they last for years and are sturdy enough to navigate cobblestone streets. What more could you want?

New Balance sneakers have made a major comeback. This style of the cool dad shoes are frequently worn by associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who says this: “These sneakers are just as comfortable as they are cool. I’ve had them for about two years now and they’ve come with me on a weekend trip spent walking around Boston , to the airport for a few flights, and on my very long commutes to the office. They’re a perfect balance of sporty and stylish—they don’t hurt my feet after hours of walking and the neutral shade always matches a variety of outfits in my carry-on. Besides my classic white sneakers , these are my most worn shoe. Bonus: I’m not very cautious about getting my sneakers dirty, but these have somehow stayed clean and in excellent condition—so don’t worry too much about its light hue.”

Hop on the New York City subway and you're bound to see a pair of Vejas or two on your fellow passengers' feet. Global digital director Arati Menon was first drawn to Veja because of the sleek, minimalist design and the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. She landed on the Campo because of its chunkier sole—both an aesthetic preference and a practical one, as it offers more support. “The biggest criticism with Vejas are that they’re stiff when you first buy them, and this is somewhat true—but I’m generally cautious not to overuse new shoes for the first few times, breaking into them little by little,” she says, noting that the Campo is more comfortable out of the box than other Veja styles. “I’ve taken my Campos on rugged national park adventures and European city breaks, and use them as workwear staples. I just retired mine after years of use, but I’m sure I’ll buy another at some point.” To clean, Menon recommends a combination of mild dishwashing liquid on a damp cloth and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

The Adonis is a newer style for Naot—a podiatrist-approved footwear brand —that dropped earlier this year. The sock-style slip-on is made with a removable cork and latex footbed that promises all-day comfort. Flager is a fan of the easy-to-match white and light pink style, and recommends them for city trips. (Pro tip: Bombas's cushioned no-show socks are just the right size to wear underneath.)

There's a reason why the Adidas Stan Smith has evolved from a tennis shoe to a streetwear classic (and can be found on multiple Traveler editors' shoe racks): They're too comfortable to ever want to take off. If you're going on a short trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, wear these—they can handle anything from a day of sightseeing to an impromptu hike, are easy to slide on and off at airport security, and will make you look chic, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort.

Allbirds are a great pick for most every vacation thanks to their versatility and true all-day comfort. These Tree Runners come highly recommended by contributor Lauren Dana Ellman and are available in a half dozen colorways and just as many limited-edition hues. Like all of the brand's shoes, they are machine washable, which means lighter colors are easy to keep looking new.

Recommended by Glamour and Teen Vogue commerce director Brie Schwartz , this playful spin on the classic Converse low-top will add a bit of fun to your travel day. The sneakers are relatively lightweight thanks to the canvas upper, and the vulcanized rubber sole helps with traction.

Look down in an exercise class or marathon and you're bound to see, at minimum, a few pairs of Hokas around you. Glamour 's senior commerce editor, Jenifer Calle , is partial to the brand's Kawana style: “I wore these sneakers when I was in San Antonio last year and they were a lifesaver for my feet,” Calle says. “I did a lot of walking during this trip and was not prepared for the Texas heat. (At one point my partner and I had to step into an H&M to cool off.) Luckily, my sneaks were very bouncy and breathable, so my feet never felt tired or sweaty.”

For those who live in Lululemon athleticwear, the brand's running shoes are a natural extension to your travel wardrobe. Traveler contributor and runner Rachel Chang tested these out when they launched in 2022, and was immediately impressed by the fit (designed specifically for a woman's foot), breathability, and smart features, like a reflective backing.

Editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs wears these shoes everywhere: “To the gym, to the park, to the rave—I sometimes have to remind myself that I own other shoes. You don't have to tie them, just pull a cord [to secure them]. They are so comfortable and easy.”

Former Traveler editor Scott Bay is a fan of this Arc'teryx hiker : “To me, it's technical enough to tackle any moderate hike, while being super comfortable all day, and I have been known to wear them to nice restaurants or shows.” Other perks: They last forever and you can throw them in the wash when they're in need of a polish.

Recommended by Calle, these On sneakers boast the brand's biggest layer of CloudTec ever for top-tier cushioning and energy return, as well as reduced muscle fatigue. “I’m not a runner by any means but I like to do a steady three-mile jog around Liberty State Park when the mood strikes,” Calle says. “I’ve been using old Nike sneakers for the last few years, but gave On shoes a try last year, and let me tell you, I didn’t know my feet could feel so much relief while running. I love that the rocker bottoms feel like they give me an extra push during my jog. I’m never going back to regular minimalist sneakers.”

Allbirds Tree Dashers

Allbirds' sneakers are known for being comfortable, but the Tree Dashers—the brand's first pair made specifically for runners—ups the ante. The thick sole will cushion your feet on the longest of days spent exploring, and if you are someone who jogs on vacation, you can pack one less pair of shoes to do so.

Known as the most popular hiking shoe in the world—more than 25 million pairs have been sold since it debuted 15 years ago—Flager was excited to put the new third generation model of the Merrell Moab to the test. “I brought them along on a recent trip to Iceland, which involved some moderate hikes and city walks on wet roads; the shoe held up nicely on both occasions. The shoes have great traction, fit comfortably, and didn't take up tons of room in my carry-on—I can see why they're so beloved.” Jake Smith , a commerce writer for Glamour , is a big fan of the shoe, too: “I've worn them for three years, and while they're nice for hiking, I really love them as walking shoes,” he says.

Emma McDonald, who works on the digital marketing team for Condé Nast, recommends these recovery shoes from Kane. “I have had them for about six months and use them at my standing desk all day long, and while running errands.” The cushiony shoe is made out of Brazilian sugarcane, with raised footbed nodes that are designed to activate blood flow in key pressure points on the sole of your foot.

Malia Griggs , Glamour 's commerce editor, is a big fan of these SeaeVees clogs. “I thought they’d just be rain boots , but I end up wearing them all the time because they’re so easy to slip on, are comfy, and perfect for any sort of drizzly days when I’m out and about in the city,” she says. “This summer, I spent a week in the North Carolina mountains and brought them with me since they’re good plane shoes (easy on and off at security!) and also durable and waterproof enough for walks on little trails. I appreciate that they have enough of a backing to not slide all the way off when I’m walking.”

Another favorite of Schwartz, these leather lug loafers are fairly light at just half a pound each, with a comfortably low heel height of 1.1 inches. Basic black goes with everything, but for a pop of color, order them in red or emerald green.

These colorful Sabah slip-ons come highly recommended by articles director Lale Arikoglu , who calls them “a permanent fixture on my packing list.” They come in dozens of colors, in either a butter soft leather or suede, and are hand stitched by one of the 10 shoemakers who comprise the Sabah Workshop in Gaziantep. “The more I wear them, the better they fit, molding to my feet like a glove—almost as if they were designed just for me,” she says.

This black and white Cole Hahn shoe toes the line between loafer and sneaker perfectly—it's nice enough to wear into the office after hopping off a plane, but casual (and comfortable) enough to wear during a day of sightseeing. If you own enough basic black, you can get the pair with an off-white, gold, or silver leather top, too. Either way, the shoe is made for long days: There's traction on the bottom to keep you from slipping on smooth museum floors, footbeds meant to mold to your feet, and cushioned padding on the heel to prevent rubbing.

Kenny has slipped on these loafers to head to work, go out to dinner—in general, any situation where she wants to look polished but doesn't necessarily want to put on a heel. Made with a soft, merino wool upper, they come in onyx black, teak herringbone, or ivory, shown above, and have a chunky 1.5-inch sole. Best of all, they are fully machine washable.

Wearing sandals for an extended period of time can be tricky, but former Traveler editor Sarah Ratner swears by good ol' fashioned Birks, with their suede-covered cork-latex footbed that practically molds to your feet over time. The Arizona slides come in every color under the sun and can be purchased in regular or narrow sizes to better fit your feet. Plus, they're easy to match with almost any outfit.

Tevas are the kind of shoe that once you own a pair, you're a fan for life. They'll come in handy on so many occasions—light hikes through Arizona (find more intense hiking shoes here ), sightseeing through dusty roads in Israel, swimming in rocky reservoirs in Austin . The trail sandals, which Flager recommends, have a bit more arch support than the classic style, meaning they'll be even more comfortable both in cities and on trails.

A second Birkenstock option with a ringing endorsement: The Arizona Big Buckle style. “I am very loyal to my Birkenstocks,” says Arikoglu. “I walked 10 miles in one day in Barcelona in them and they never rubbed.”

lightweight walking shoes for travel

Another favorite of Kenny's, these Rothy's slides are a welcome update to some of the brand's previous iterations of sandals, which, while cute, offered little when it came to support. “When I put these new slides on from Rothy’s, I immediately knew they will be my go-to summer sandal for beach excursions and vacation days that require a decent amount of walking while also looking put together,” Kenny says. “A durable yet comfortable sandal is always tricky to find, but these have a pretty thick sole and give a lot more support than the flat pair of flip flops I’m always tempted to pack. I went for the neutral beige color that I know will match any midi dress or linen pants I pack this summer.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Sandal, Accessories, Accessory, and Belt

Another one of Spurrell's go-to's , these Tevas are slightly less grippy than the Trail sandals, but are still plenty comfortable for all-day wear. Spurrell has worn them on bike rides, long walks, beach days, and out to dinner in New York—proof of their range, and value on your packing list.

Birdies Starling flat

It can be nice to have a good pair of flats tucked away in your suitcase for a fancy dinner or evening stroll after a long day in sneakers, especially given how easy they are to pack. We like Birdies' The Starling flats, meant to be a modern take on the classic smoking slipper. They're built to last, and to keep your feet comfortable: Inside, there's seven-layer cushioned footbed with elevated arch support, plus a little extra cushion in the heel to prevent it from rubbing. Order them in suede, faux fur, or velvet fabrics.

lightweight walking shoes for travel

While Rothy's makes a classic ballet flat , too, we love the more sophisticated look of the Point Flat. Available in more than a dozen colors from lollipop red to boysenberry and dark emerald, there's a hue for every kind of traveler and outfit. All of Rothy's shoes are made out of recycled plastic, and cut using the same technology as Suav, meaning there's less waste throughout production. The shoes were recently redesigned to be even more comfortable thanks to a cushier insole and more spacious toebox.

Frequently Asked Questions

No matter where in the world you want to go, your travels will likely involve some amount of walking as you explore new cities and natural wonders.

"The dirty little secret of travel, especially air travel, is the true amount of walking involved just getting to the destination," says board-certified podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, of Paragon Podiatry . "For instance, airports are cavernously large, and it's not unusual to walk a mile or more just to get to the gate after spending what can seem like an eternity in a long security line."

If you don't bring the right footwear, walking can become painful, limiting what you're able to do on your vacation.

"Investing in high-quality shoes ensures durability, support, and overall foot health during your travels," says Maggie Trevillion, founder of Callen Olive, a luxury leg and foot skincare brand, and podiatrist at Walk This Way Podiatry . "Quality shoes are designed to withstand the rigors of exploration, offering better cushioning, stability and traction. They can help prevent foot fatigue, blisters and other discomforts, allowing you to explore your destination with confidence and gusto."

Quality walking shoes are important for more than just your feet, too: "Wearing proper walking shoes with adequate cushioning and support helps to distribute the body's weight evenly, reducing the strain on our feet, ankles, knees and hips," according to Daniel Pledger, podiatrist and founder of ePodiatrists .

When weighing your options, Trevillion recommends looking for the following features:

  • Comfort , including cushioning and arch support
  • Breathable and durable material , with features like sturdy outsoles
  • Lightweight build , for easy packing
  • Traction , with rubber or multidirectional lug soles to give you a good grip
  • Versatility , so you can use one pair of shoes in different environments

Pledger emphasizes the importance of arch support in your walking shoes. "This helps to maintain the natural alignment of the foot and reduces the risk of arch-related problems like plantar fasciitis," he says. He also recommends a well-cushioned midsole to absorb the impact as you walk; a supportive heel counter for stability; and a flexible outsole, which will allow for natural foot movement.

Follow your instincts as you try on shoes. "The shoe that feels most comfortable in the store is probably the best shoe, whatever style that may be," Isaacson says. "And if it's not comfortable in the store it's not going to magically conform to the foot in the bag on the way home."

With so many shoe brands on the market, your choice will ultimately come down to personal preference and foot characteristics. There is no one shoe that will work for every foot.

Pledger's patients, for example, offer consistent positive feedback for shoes from New Balance, ECCO and Merrell. Even still, "I would caution against blindly following brand recommendations without trying on the shoes and assessing their fit and feel," Pledger says.

Trevillion also recommends ECCO and New Balance, adding that KEEN and Salomon also have great options for challenging terrain. These brands are all praised by travelers worldwide, but don't be discouraged if the shoes that work for others just don't fit your shoe preferences. At the end of the day, you're the one who has to wear them, so try out different options if you need to and discover what features suit you best.

When searching for your perfect walking shoe, look at the following:

  • Outsole: This is the bottom of the shoe that will have direct contact with the surface you are walking on. It should be flexible and shock-absorbing. A sturdier outsole will provide more stability for a variety of pavements.
  • Insole: This is the interior bottom of the shoe. You'll want a comfortable fabric to prevent your foot from rubbing, as well as cushioning and support.
  • Midsole: This is the area inside the shoe where the arch of your foot rests. Having a strong foundation here is key for foot alignment and proper support.
  • Upper: This refers to the fabric and construction of the portion of the shoe that will cover the top and sides of your foot. The fabric type will determine breathability, durability and if it will repel water.
  • Heel cup: This is the area where your heel sits inside the shoe. It should be secure for walking and may have additional cushioning for shock absorption.

The Packable Life

16 Tried-And-True Travel Shoes (for Walking All Day)

Three sets of men's travel shoes resting on the bumper of a van

Smart travelers know the value of great shoes. When you’re on your feet all day — whether it’s hiking a trail or walking neighborhoods in a new city — your footwear can make an enormous difference. That’s why I’m here to report on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for walking all day.

I’m a minimalist and typically only take one or two pairs of shoes on the road. My ideal travel shoes are stylish, lightweight, and comfortable all day long. In the summer, I look for more breathable and lightweight shoes, and in winter, I crave warmth and durability.

I’ve worked at REI and traveled extensively in Europe for business and personal endeavors, so I know a thing or two about footwear that’s built for walking all day. I’m happy to share my findings on such brands as Allbirds, Lems, Xero, SeaVees, and Blundstone, as these companies make some truly stellar kicks.

This list includes sneakers, loafers, slip-ons, athletic shoes, and a few sandals that I’ve evaluated for comfort, style, packability, and other key factors.

Travel is back in a big way, so let’s dive headfirst into my list of the best men’s and women’s travel shoes money can buy.

Best Travel Shoes for Men & Women

  • Best All-Around: Allbirds Tree Runners
  • Best Slip-Ons: SeaVees Huntington Middie
  • Zero-Drop Barefoot Shoes: Lems Primal Zen
  • Zero-Drop Barefoot Boots: Lems Boulder Vegan
  • All-Purpose Sneakers: Reebok Classic

  • Classy Slide-On Sandals: Birkenstock Arizona
  • Unbreakable Flip Flops: Rainbow Double Layer
  • Hiking Sandals: Teva Universal
  • Considerations for Travel Shoes & Sandals
  • Final Thoughts: Best Travel Shoes for Men & Women

Best All-Around Allbirds Tree Runners

Allbirds Tree Runners

I’m a huge fan of the Allbirds Tree Runners. They come in a wide variety of colors, and you’ll love their breathability and packability. You’ll have no problem squishing them down flat and tying them to the side of your backpack or even stuffing them into the water bottle pocket.

I criss-crossed Europe in my Allbirds and washed them several times. They held up great! The best thing about Allbirds is how lightweight they are. They’re perfect for walking all day, thanks to the stretchy material that molds to your feet.

If you’re looking for responsibly sourced and comfortable all-day shoes, I can highly recommend the Allbirds.

Best Slip-Ons SeaVees Huntington Middie

SeaVees Huntington Middie comfortable travel slip-ons

Want a slightly more stylish option than the Allbirds? The SeaVees Huntington Middie is my favorite slip-on shoe for travel. The high top and suede material make them easy to dress up or down.

SeaVees are perfect travel companions. I love the simple, minimalistic look they bring to any outfit, so they look great day and night.

Plus, they’re super comfortable and easy to slip on and off. Quite a few online reviewers say SeaVees aren’t just a travel shoe but also a go-to everyday casual shoe.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Shoes Lems Primal Zen

Black and gray Lems brand barefoot men's shoe

I recommend the Lems Primal Zens for the zero-drop traveler because they’re lightweight, versatile, and minimalist, making them excellent travel shoes.

Travel is hard on the body, and some people prefer the benefits of a zero-drop shoe with the natural fit and feel that promotes healthy walking habits. In comparison, traditional shoes can produce an unnatural gait that increases the likelihood of injury.

These Lems can handle anything – from running, hiking, working out, and walking. Their versatility and durability make them perfect for a new adventure every day when traveling.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Boots Lems Boulder Vegan

Lems Boulder Vegan barefoot boots

Traveling in the fall or winter? I’d opt for Lems’ Boulder Vegan Boots. The neutral colors go with any outfit, and they pack down to a size of a puff jacket, making them an easy must-carry.

Lems is a vegan-friendly Colorado brand that strives to make responsibly produced and sustainable footwear. They use recycled products to create new materials and also partner with a non-profit.

The Lems cork footbed molds to your feet and has a wide toebox, so this zero-drop style is perfect for travelers who are on their feet all day. You have a choice of materials to help you find the one that best matches your travel needs.

All-Purpose Sneakers Reebok Classic

White Reebok Classic all-purpose sneakers

If you’re a fan of sneakers, the Reebok Classic offers excellent support and comes in an array of colors and styles.

The downside to these shoes is their limited packability and versatility. Compared to others on this list, the Reebok Classics don’t pack down as small and don’t dress up as easily for attending those special dinner events.

I love these Reeboks because they’re highly functional and will take you to your destination in comfy sneaker style.

Ultra-Lightweight & Packable Slip-Ons Xero Sunrise

Grey ultralight slip-ons for travel

The Xero Sunrise slip-ons are the lightest and most packable shoe on this list. Weighing in at a ridiculous 5.6 ounces each (men’s size medium), these were designed for those who want a comfortable shoe to slide into when it’s time to chill.

Though I don’t recommend climbing a mountain in these or donning them during a 30,000-step marathon around the city, I do think they’d work perfectly for a relaxing night on the town, strolling around a farmers market, or kicking your feet up by the pool.

From experience, I can tell you these are about as comfortable, cozy, and convenient as travel shoes come these days. For my more relaxed trips, they’ll make it into my travel bag every single time.

Trail Running Shoes Salomon Wander

Black Salomon Wander footwear for trail running and high-volume walking

The Salomon Wander is made for trail running but also works quite well as a travel shoe. They’re versatile for active travelers who like to walk, run, and hike all day, every day.

These shoes have ample cushion that makes long walks in the city easier on your knees, but they aren’t quite as stylish as some and don’t dress up as easily.

Salomon is a trusted and well-reviewed brand, and their Wander is a fine addition to their respected product line. If you spend all day on your feet, look no further.

Stylish Hiking Shoes Merrell Burnt Rock

Merrell Burnt Rock hiking shoes

I love the Merrell Burnt Rock because they’re so stylish. These are ideal for travelers who like to hit the trail occasionally but also know they’ll spend most of their time in the city.

The Burnt Rock comes in various colors, and their earth-toned palette makes them about as versatile of a shoe as you’ll find on this list. The mixture of suede and mesh make them breathable like a sneaker, but with style.

Flip the shoe over and you’ll find a beautiful rubber outsole for reliable traction, yet these don’t look like hiking shoes.

Tough Fitness Kicks GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

Are you an active traveler who pushes most shoes to their limits? Or someone who will work out CrossFit-style before racing off to see the sights? Then I wholeheartedly recommend the GORUCK Ballistic Trainers.

The Ballistic Trainers are designed for the traveler who puts their shoes through hell. They’re extra supportive, with tough nylon uppers and durable triple compound rubber. These shoes are seriously durable.

Not only are they built to last, but also are stylish and versatile enough for any casual travel. They’re low-profile sneakers in neutral colors that can be paired with any casual clothing. The GORUCK Ballistic Trainers make for a perfect travel shoe for the always-on-the-move traveler.

Men’s Dress Shoes Florsheim Oxford

Florsheim Oxford men's dress footwear

For men who like to travel in style, the Florsheim Oxfords are ideal shoes for looking good all day and night. I recommend these for business commuters who need to balance professionalism with their active lifestyle.

The Oxfords have a very classic, minimalist style. Their Ortholite X-40 rebound foam soles deliver non-stop comfort no matter how long you’re on your feet.

The Florsheim Oxford is a quality dress shoe that won’t break your budget. Traveling for work is often tiring, but these shoes will cushion your feet and keep the spring in your step.

Women’s Dress Shoes Rothy’s The Point

Rothy’s The Point slip-on women's dress shoes

Rothy’s is a high-quality brand that’s known for transforming recycled plastic bottles into simple, stylish shoes. They have classic silhouettes and a variety of styles to match your personality.

Why have I included them on this list? Not only are they simple and packable, but they’re designed to be washed. I’ve had mine for years, and even after several washes, they look as good as new.

While they cost a bit more, the material quality and durability are well worth the price. For businesswomen on their feet all day, these are the stylish flats you’ve been wanting.

Slip-On Chelsea Boots Blundstone 550

Blundstone 550 leather slip-on chelsea boots

These are my go-to winter travel shoes — versatile and stylish slip-on Chelsea boots that are easy to love. Yes, they’re one of the more expensive options here, but well worth the investment.

If I was traveling and could only bring one pair of shoes, I’d bring these. I can work, hike, or walk all day in them with no problem. Compared to the Lems, the Blundstone 550 are more durable and rugged. They do get a bit hot in warmer climates, so consider the low cuts.

Caution: Blundstone is an Australian brand, and AU and US sizes differ slightly. For example, at REI the boot size on the box is AU sizing but the size selection tool on the website is US sizing. Make sure you’re ordering the right size.

Minimalist Barefoot Sandals Luna Oso Flaco Winged Edition

lightweight walking shoes for travel

If you’re traveling to a warm climate and have little need to dress up, I’d recommend the Luna Oso Flaco. In another post, I chose these as the top minimalist barefoot sandal , due to their many excellent qualities for active travelers on the go.

Weighing under one pound per pair, these are lightweight as well as super-compact. You’ll barely notice them in your suitcase or backpack.

The Oso Flaco sandals are the best zero-drop option for travelers who want to connect with the earth. Their lightweight and rugged sole makes them a great choice for your adventures.

Classy Slide-On Sandals Birkenstock Arizona

Birkenstock Arizona comfortable slide-on travel sandals

Our favorite versatile slide-on sandals are the Birkenstock Arizonas. These are a classic style that has transitioned from dorky to stylish over the years.

I sometimes travel in summer with friends who also wear these shoes. We all agree that they’re ultra-comfortable and perfect for all-day treks in the city. Whether you wake up in hostels or highrise hotels, these are reliable urban cruisers.

One caveat, however: on hot, sweaty days in these sandals, my feet sometimes get blisters, so I’ll usually opt for sneakers instead. Other than that, I love my Birkenstocks for traveling.

Unbreakable Flip-Flops Rainbow Double Layer

Rainbow Double Layer flip flops

Rainbows are flip-flops built for the long haul. But be sure to break these in before your trip. They may be uncomfortable at first, but once they mold to your feet, you’ll never want to take them off.

I know people who have worn these for years and swear by them. As with some of the other shoes on this list, these are quite flat and packable. The two shoes sandwiched together are about the thickness of a paperback book.

The Rainbow product guarantee covers all manufacturing defects for life, no matter how old. This lifetime replacement policy is another reason to love these traveler favorites.

Hiking Sandals Teva Universal

Teva Universal sandal for men and women

Want a more substantial and supportive sandal than the Bedrocks? I’d point you to the Teva Universal Sandal — versatile, classic, and more affordable.

These come in several neutral colors that simplify dress-up. I had a pair with copper-colored straps that paired easily with dresses I wore for a summer in Italy.

Teva Universals are lightweight and can be easily stowed. Save space by using their Velcro straps to fasten them to the outside of your backpack.

Criteria for Travel Shoes & Sandals

Shoes flipped upside down showing black soles with the Lems brand logo

This list reflects several key factors you should consider before packing your suitcase with travel shoes. Some may be more relevant than others, based on your travel needs.

No matter where you’re going, your shoes must always be comfortable, especially when the steps start to pile up. Treat your feet right by carefully considering the cushioning and breathability.

An ill-fitting pair of shoes can be distracting and even painful at times, so do your do diligence as you research shoes, read reviews, and reference the sizing guide to ensure you get the right fit.

Styling is important if a shoe is to be truly versatile. I lean more towards minimalist sneakers if I’ll be going to museums all day followed by a relaxing dinner at night. Save space in your suitcase by packing a style that complements as many of your outfits and activities as possible.

We’ve done our best to pick a wide array of shoes that will look good on anyone, and have strayed away from the dorky Rick Steves dad sneakers of the past. (Sorry, Rick.)

Laced vs. Slip-On

I often pack one pair of laced and one pair of slip-on shoes for ease of use and comfort (slip-ons) and athletic performance (laced). There are other styles to consider, too, like boots and sandals, so do your research and choose what’s best for you.

I usually wear my slip-ons for more leisurely activities and wear laced kicks for more high-intensity activities that call for more foot and ankle support.

Breathability

When you’re a high-intensity traveler who puts in a lot of steps , you need a set of footwear that’ll release the body heat that your feet produce. Otherwise, you’re looking at clammy, sweaty feet that are prone to blisters. Gross.

We did our best to pick breathable shoes that will keep your feet dry and fresh as you pile up the miles, so long as you match them up with a capable pair of travel or hiking socks .

Have you ever had a pair of cheap shoes crap out on you midway through a trip? I haven’t, but I can imagine it’d be quite the pain in the butt to replace shoes in a foreign land. I don’t have such problems with my footwear since I always pick travel shoes that are durable and built for the long haul.

To ensure you buy a pair of durable shoes, read reviews, keep a close eye on the materials used to produce them, and only buy well-reviewed products from trusted brands.

Packability

As a minimalist traveler, packability is one of my top priorities. I wear my bulkiest shoes on the airplane while packing my lighter and more compact pair, as well as my sandals.

Saving space in your minimalist travel pack is a top consideration when hitting the road, so pick shoes that’ll pack down small if you intend on traveling light .

Weight and packability go hand in hand. And lighter shoes are better when you’re carrying a weekend backpack, duffle, or suitcase. Shoes tend to be among the heaviest travel items we carry.

Noel, the founder of this website, is an ultralight backpacker who nerds out over the weight of each piece of gear in his backpack. Maybe you should too.

Affordability is another key factor. I want all of the factors listed above, but not at an unfair cost. Remember that your shoes must endure cobblestones, dirt roads, train stations, and the occasional hike. That’s why you don’t see any cheap Amazon knockoffs on this list.

We did our best to recommend an array of well-reviewed shoes across a wide range of budgets.

Which Travel Shoes Will You Lace Up?

Man with blue jeans and black boots walking down a cobblestone road at sunset

This has been my take on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for all day walking. All of these shoes are stylish, comfortable, durable, lightweight and breathable. With any of these, your feet will thank you for making their next travel adventure as comfy as possible.

Don’t waste a single precious travel day looking for new shoes (or band-aids) because you chose the wrong footwear. This list consists of quality brands like Allbirds, Lems, Xero, Reebok, Blundstone, and others that you can rely on. Please share your experiences in the comments section.

I’ve traveled extensively in Europe wearing several of these shoes and hope my experiences will help you more comfortably navigate all those airports, train stations, and city streets that await you in the future. May all your travel adventures be low-impact, smooth sailing, and on-time!

The best walking shoes for travel: the sneakers, boots and slip-ons our editors always pack

By Madison Flager

Finding the best walking shoes for travel can be tough. You want something comfortable enough to get you through a full day of wandering around, but not so comfortable that it screams “I'm a tourist!” And since nobody wants to tote around a bag (checked or otherwise) filled with shoes, the ones that do make the packing list cut need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.

Knowing that a bad pair of shoes can ruin an otherwise lovely travel day, we asked Condé Nast Traveller writers and editors to share their tried-and-true kicks, so you don't have to take a gamble on whether they'll actually be comfortable or not. Whether you're looking for sneakers, boots, flats, or sandals, we have recommendations for you. Below we've listed our favourite high-quality, easy-to-pack walking shoes for travel – all cushy, supportive, and versatile – that will take you just about anywhere. Scroll through to see all of our favourites, or jump straight to the category you're looking for below.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. Additional reporting by Elaheh Nozari and Andrea Whittle.

Having worn them on a recent trip to Switzerland, commerce editor Lauren Burvill recommends these chunky boots for any snowy-weather travel. The extra thick soles offer incredible grip for when conditions are snowy or icy, and the cushioned foam padding keeps feet lovely and warm. The boots also come in three colour options.

Another great snowy weather boot are the trendy Moon Boots, as recommend by our fashion editor Charlotte Davey. As featured in our ski trip packing guide , these cosy boots come in a huge range of vibrant colours and have a bouncy rubber sole that offer reliable grip.

Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of Vagabond's lug sole boots, and recommends a style with a wider toe for maximum comfort on long days of walking. Best for city trips, these Chelsea boots are on the bulkier side, so wear them through security to cut down on suitcase weight.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, Riding Boot, and Boot

Spurrell has waxed poetic about Frye's Melissa Chelsea boots before: they're her go-to for any city trip. They look good with jeans, leggings , or dresses, pack down well, and over time, have become as comfortable as sneakers . Plus, they last for years and are sturdy enough to navigate cobblestone streets. What more could you want?

lightweight walking shoes for travel

A few of our writers recently tested these shoes on a range of different trips, and loved how lightweight they were, offering a perfect hybrid solution between a trainer and a boot. The shoes offer great grip while remaining relatively easy to store in a suitcase. The main downside though is they're not wipe clean, so choose your colour wisely.

New Balance sneakers are having a moment. This style of the cool dad shoes are frequently worn by associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny, who says this: “These sneakers are just as comfortable as they are cool. I’ve had them for about a year now and they’ve come with me on a weekend trip spent walking around Boston, to the airport for a few flights, and on my very long commutes to the office. They’re a perfect balance of sporty and stylish – they don’t hurt my feet after hours of walking and the neutral shade always matches a variety of outfits in my carry-on. Besides my classic white sneakers, these are my most worn shoe. Bonus: I’m not very cautious about getting my sneakers dirty, but these have somehow stayed clean and in excellent condition – so don’t worry too much about its light hue.”

Hop on the New York City subway and you're bound to see a pair of Vejas or two on your fellow passengers' feet. Global digital director Arati Menon was first drawn to Veja because of the sleek, minimalist design and the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. She landed on the Campo because of its chunkier sole – both an aesthetic preference and a practical one, as it offers more support. “The biggest criticism with Vejas are that they’re stiff when you first buy them, and this is somewhat true – but I’m generally cautious not to overuse new shoes for the first few times, breaking into them little by little,” she says, noting that the Campo is more comfortable out of the box than other Veja styles.

There's a reason why the Adidas Stan Smith has evolved from a tennis shoe to a streetwear classic (and can be found on multiple Traveller editors' shoe racks): They're too comfortable to ever want to take off. If you're going on a short trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, wear these – they can handle anything from a day of sightseeing to an impromptu hike, are easy to slide on and off at airport security, and will make you look chic, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort.

Allbirds are a great pick for most every vacation thanks to their versatility and true all-day comfort. These Tree Runners come highly recommended by contributor Lauren Dana Ellman and are available in a half dozen colourways and just as many limited-edition hues. Like all of the brand's shoes, they are machine washable, which means lighter colours are easy to keep looking new.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, Sneaker, and Canvas

A good basic white sneaker goes a long way, and this relatively new style from Allbirds is another one of Flager's favourites. It was comfortable straight out of the box, and has enough lift and support for all day wear. The plastic-free alternative leather is made out of natural rubber, plant oils, and agricultural byproducts, making it a better buy for the environment, too.

Athletic shoes

lightweight walking shoes for travel

For those who live in Lululemon athleticwear, the brand's running shoes are a natural extension to your travel wardrobe. Traveller contributor and runner Rachel Chang tested these out when they launched in 2022, and was immediately impressed by the fit (designed specifically for a woman's foot), breathability and smart features, like a reflective backing.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, Running Shoe, and Sneaker

Editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs wears these shoes everywhere: “To the gym, to the park, to the rave – I sometimes have to remind myself that I own other shoes. You don't have to tie them, just pull a cord [to secure them]. They are so comfortable and easy.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, and Running Shoe

Associate editor Scott Bay is a fan of this Arc'teryx hiker: “To me, it's technical enough to tackle any moderate hike, while being super comfortable all day, and I have been known to wear them to nice restaurants or shows.” Other perks: They last forever and you can throw them in the wash when they're in need of a polish.

lightweight walking shoes for travel

Known as the most popular hiking shoe in the world – more than 25 million pairs have been sold since it debuted 15 years ago – Flager was excited to put the new third generation model of the Merrell Moab to the test. “I brought them along on a recent trip to Iceland, which involved some moderate hikes and city walks on wet roads; the shoe held up nicely on both occasions. The shoes have great traction, fit comfortably and didn't take up tons of room in my carry-on – I can see why they're so beloved.”

Allbirds Tree Dashers

Allbirds' sneakers are known for being comfortable, but the Tree Dashers – the brand's first pair made specifically for runners – ups the ante. The thick sole will cushion your feet on the longest of days spent exploring, and if you are someone who jogs on vacation, you can pack one less pair of shoes to do so.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, and Sandal

Wearing sandals for an extended period of time can be tricky, but former Traveller editor Sarah Ratner swears by good ol' fashioned Birks, with their suede-covered cork-latex footbed that practically moulds to your feet over time. The Arizona slides come in every colour under the sun and can be purchased in regular or narrow sizes to better fit your feet. Plus, they're easy to match with almost any outfit.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, and Sandal

Tevas are the kind of shoe that once you own a pair, you're a fan for life. They'll come in handy on so many occasions – light hikes through Arizona (find more intense hiking shoes here ), sightseeing through dusty roads in Israel, swimming in rocky reservoirs in Austin. The trail sandals, which Flager recommends, have a bit more arch support than the classic style, meaning they'll be even more comfortable both in cities and on trails.

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Sandal, and Apparel

A second Birkenstock option with a ringing endorsement: the Arizona Big Buckle style. “I am very loyal to my Birkenstocks,” says Arikoglu. “I walked 10 miles in one day in Barcelona in them and they never rubbed.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Sandal, Accessories, Accessory, and Belt

Another favorite of Spurrell's, these Tevas are slightly less grippy than the ones above, but are still plenty comfortable for all-day wear. Spurrell has worn them on bike rides, long walks, beach days and out to dinner in New York – proof of their range, and value on your packing list.

Best Lightweight Walking Shoes for Travel

After you’ve read this post, make sure you check out our complete guide to travel gear for minimalists our guide on how to pack light in just a carry on suitcase and our mega post that covers all the travel essentials for women .

Our Picks for the Best Lightweight Walking Shoes

  • Salomon XA Lite GTX – Stephen’s pick for Europe

  • Merrell Siren – Jane’s pick for Europe
  • Merrell Civet Zipper Fashion Sneaker – best stylish walking shoe for women
  • Jambu Spirit – combines comfort with style
  • Keen Clearwater Sandals – best for hot weather travel
  • Jambu Cara Walking Shoe – best cute shoes for women
  • Native Shoes Jefferson – lightest shoes for casual travel

What kind of shoes do you need in your suitcase?

No matter where you’re going, you should get the best lightweight walking shoes you can afford. They will be on your feet every single day, so it’s worth getting a great pair.

Your second pair of shoes depends on where you’re going and what you will be doing. Our second pair of shoes is a lightweight walking sandal, so we are good to go for all climates. You might choose to bring a dressier shoe, instead, for nights out!

(Don’t miss: Our guide to the best men’s travel pants ) →

How many pairs of shoes do you need for travel?

The answer to this question depends on a few factors:

How long are you going to travel? Usually, if you’re travelling for one month or less, you can get away with just a single pair of comfortable, lightweight walking shoes. Most people will bring a back-up pair, just in case.

For longer trips, or a lifetime of travel, we still recommend just two pairs of shoes. One pair of walking shoes and one spare pair for nights out or different climates.

man in shoes walking through a waterfall

What season or weather will you be travelling in? If it’s going to be hot and dry, then a pair of lightweight walking sandals should be your first choice. We like to get sandals that cover our toes. On unfamiliar terrain, it seems like there is always something waiting to damage your toes!

If you’re going somewhere cold or wet, you’ll definitely want one pair of waterproof shoes and an extra pair in case the first ones get too wet to wear.

Where are you going? Your shoe needs will be very different if you’re going to Europe, Antarctica, or Southeast Asia. You’ll want a pair of stylish walking shoes for Europe, whereas in Southeast Asia, most people walk around in flip-flops, so style is less important than comfort.

What is your travel style? If you are a backpacker or a mid-range traveller, two pairs of shoes is plenty. If you’re planning on travelling high-end, you’ll need a third pair of formal shoes for all those Michelin-starred restaurants you’ll be visiting.

Why do you need comfortable walking shoes even if you hate walking?

Walking and travelling go hand-in-hand – you can’t do one without the other.

(OK, you can, because there are plenty of wheelchair users who travel !)

But for most of us, we will be walking a lot. Even if you’re not going to hike up a mountain, you walk to dinner, you walk in the museum, you walk down the city streets, you walk through the train station. It is easy to get your 10,000 steps when you’re travelling!

If you wear flats or shoes without support, your legs are going to pay the price!

By wearing proper, comfortable walking shoes, you’ll find your legs get less sore and tired by the end of the day, meaning you can go further and see more. You’ll also protect your knees, ankles, hips, and even back from injury. So comfortable walking shoes are essential!

What makes a great walking shoe for travel?

If you’re looking for a new pair of shoes, these are my must-have features.

  • Waterproof. You can jump in puddles and ford streams with no wet toes. Also rainstorm-proof!
  • Lightweight. They won’t weigh down your luggage or put unnecessary strain on your legs.
  • Vegan. No leather, so you can avoid harming animals for our footwear.
  • Comfortable. Your feet and legs are protected and supported for long hikes in cities or the wilderness.

What are vegan shoes and why do we recommend them?

Did you know there is such thing as vegan shoes? Well, there is, and even if you aren’t a vegan in your eating habits, you can make an impact by choosing vegan shoes.

They are, essentially, shoes made without animal products – like leather or crocodile skin or bunny rabbit fur. By choosing vegan shoes, you can feel good that you didn’t kill an animal for your footwear. Synthetic shoes also tend to perform better in unpredictable conditions, so your vegan shoes should last longer.

Fun fact. While many shoes come without leather, most companies do not guarantee their shoes are vegan because they can’t trace the origin of the glue used in shoes. Unfortunately, shoe glue often contains horse hooves and other animal parts. Frowny face.

For this guide, the shoes we recommend do not have any animal-based materials, but we cannot guarantee the glue used is vegan.

Should you wear in your shoes before you travel?

Absolutely! Even in the most comfortable shoes, it can take a little time for your feet to adjust, and for the shoe to adjust to your feet. Since we all have different feet, no shoe manufacturer can guarantee that their shoe won’t rub or pinch.

So even if your trip isn’t for a while, buy your travel shoes now so you can try them out and get comfortable – or return them if they don’t fit.

What’s the best way to pack shoes for travel?

Finding room in your suitcase for shoes can be a total nightmare! That’s why you want to take as few pairs as possible.

When I pack my shoes, I place the tops together, soles out, and face them in opposite directions – with the toe of one shoe in the heel of the other. I find this is the most space-saving and convenient configuration.

Then I put them in a plastic bag and slide them into the very bottom of my suitcase.

I don’t stuff my shoes with other junk because when you’re a minimalist packer, you don’t need to bother with such things.

Our Picks of the Best Lightweight Walking Shoes

Best shoes for backpacking europe, salomon xa lite gtx.

best lightweight walking shoes

Stephen’s pick! Stephen has been travelling in Salomon shoes for the last five years, and it is an ongoing love affair.

Judging by the number of people we see wearing these shoes all around the world, we’re not the only ones who are in love with them!

  • They are comfortable right out of the box, well ventilated, but still warm enough for cold European winter.
  • The cushioning is superb, protecting our feet and legs from hard concrete streets and marble-floored museums.
  • If you get the GTX version, they are waterproof, too, making these our pick for the best waterproof walking shoes as well.

Not just city shoes, they also perform well whether we’re climbing mountains, cycle touring , or scaling a volcano.

If you’re only going to take one pair of shoes with you when you backpack Europe, these would be our first choice!

Loom waterproof sneakers.

loom waterproof sneakers

These Loom sneakers are as close as I’ve ever gotten to one-shoe-fits-all-purposes footwear.

They are completely waterproof, which is perfect for winter in Vancouver, where we are right now. Plus, they look great with skinny jeans or whatever I happen to be wearing. So far, they are comfy too — no blisters or awkward rubbing even though they’re brand new. I haven’t yet tried them on a hike or longer walk but I will report back when I do!

Merrell Siren

merrell siren shoes

After living in my Salomon Women’s XA Pro 3D waterproof trail runners for years, I decided to look for a lightweight walking shoe that looked a little less clunky.

I finally found these Merrell Siren shoes that are completely waterproof, have great grips, even on ice, and make me feel a little more stylish while I’m wearing them.

No, they might not be quite up to luxury standard, but you have to be a bit flexible with fashion when you travel the way I do!

Stylish walking shoes for Europe

Merrell civet zipper fashion sneaker.

Merrell Civet stylish trainers

I like these Merrell sneakers because they aren’t just a pretty shoe — they are made for active travellers. They have anti-microbial lining, a breathable mesh upper, and extra traction for slippery streets and stairs. You just don’t find those features in an ordinary fashion sneaker!

These shoes would be ideal walking shoes for Europe in summer but they are probably too well ventilated for a winter trip. If you’re heading to Europe in winter, try the next pair of shoes on our list.

Comfortable walking shoes for Europe

Jambu spirit.

jambu spirit memory foam shoes

The first is their memory foam footbed. What can be more comfortable for an all day walk around Paris or Rome than memory foam? It’s like two little beds for your feet!

I also love that they are slip ons and have anti-microbial properties, just like the Merrell shoes above. If you’re heading to Europe in winter, these Jambu shoes would be great!

keen travel sandals

Since taking delivery of our Keen Clearwater Sandals in Thailand back in 2014, they have been permanent fixtures in our carry-on suitcases. When we’re in wintry countries where floors are cold, we use them as house slippers. In summer and hot countries, we transition them back to the great outdoors.

What do we love about our Keen travel sandals?

  • Comfortable. From the beginning they were comfy; no breaking in or blister patches required.
  • Protective. Featuring an enclosed toe-cap, these sandals protect our feet from broken pavement in the city and jutting tree roots in the wild.
  • Waterproof & quick drying. They don’t keep your feet dry but they also don’t get damaged when you wear them in water.
  • Washable. We throw our sandals in with our regular laundry and they come out looking (and smelling) just like new.

If you want animal-friendly shoes, check the description carefully, as the Keen Clearwater are available with or without leather.

We are pretty keen on Keen as a brand, since our sandals have lasted through 7 years of adventures so far. Check out their wide range of shoes , from flip flops to hiking boots. Many Keen shoes include leather, so always check the materials before buying.

Best Casual Shoes for Travel

Now, remember how I said waaaaay back at the beginning of this post that you might want to bring a second or even (gasp!) third pair of shoes in your carry-on?

You should think of this as your back-up / dress-up pair. If you go somewhere trendy, you don’t have to go in your everyday walking shoes. More importantly, if your primary shoes get wet or something else happens to them, you’ll have another pair on hand!

Your second pair of shoes should still be functional enough to go for a stroll or get you through an evening walking tour but they don’t need to be a versatile as you primary shoes.

They should also be extremely squashable and packable, so they take up as little room in your suitcase as possible.

Here are some of our favourite casual travel shoes!

Jambu Women’s Cara Walking Shoe

lightweight mary jane shoes

With a memory foam footbed, a partially recycled sole, and of course, an all-vegan construction, there’s no reason not to love them.

(Now I want a pair!)

Native Shoes Jefferson

lightest walking shoes

One of their greatest features is that they are incredibly lightweight – like, so light, you don’t even notice they’re there. They are also perfect water shoes or rainy day shoes. Yes, your feet get wet, but your shoes come out fine and dry quickly.

When we finally wore out our soles, after years of use, we were both so sad to let our Native Shoes go.

Native Shoes Yates LX

light flip flops

(Confession time: right now I carry four pairs of shoes and one of them is flip-flops. Yes, I know this is terrible minimalism but I am only human! Plus, I do travel FULL-TIME.)

Anyway, my flip-flops, which I am wearing right now, serve as slippers in cold climates and street shoes in tropical ones. They’re also great for pools, beaches, and grotty hostel showers. I’m not sure how I managed to travel without them.

I would recommend against just grabbing any old pair of cheap flip-flops, though. Cheap ones are uncomfortable and break in about five minutes.

That’s why I like the looks of these Native Shoes flip-flops. I already know from experience that their shoes are virtually indestructible and super lightweight. They also have lots of great features for travel:

  • The deep footbed means you’ll get a little more protection for your heels and toes.
  • They have anti microbial materials in the footbed too, so no stinky feet.
  • The strap and sole are a single piece of molded plastic, which makes them way more durable than a regular flip-flop and more comfy too.

Well that’s it! I never thought I’d have so much to say on the subject of lightweight walking shoes but, as it turns out, 20 years of travel can build some serious knowledge. I hope you liked the guide and found your perfect shoe!

Whether you’re packing for a business trip or your annual vacation, space and weight are usually limited. One way to make the most of your luggage allowance is to carefully choose which shoes you take. A lightweight, comfortable pair that can fulfill several different functions (from providing support on your city walking tour or hiking excursion to looking good at dinner afterward) is ideal.

Our travel experts tested 22 of the best women’s shoes for your next adventure, rating each pair for comfort, fit, quality, and value, then choosing winners for a range of categories from “Best Sandals” to “Most Sustainable.”

Best Overall

Adidas cloudfoam pure 2.0 running shoes.

 Amazon

  • Cushioning 4 /5
  • Responsiveness 3.5 /5
  • Blister Protection 4.5 /5

Ready out of the box

Hard-wearing and easy to clean

Reasonable price point

Limited color choices

If you’re looking for an everyday, running-inspired sneaker that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker. Made especially for women, they feature a breathable, foot-hugging textile upper and a combined Cloudfoam midsole and outsole. We found the latter so comfortable that we likened wearing them to having our feet cradled by a cloud and reported no rubbing or irritation even though we wore them for extended periods without socks. The shoes have laces and score sustainability points by utilizing high-performance recycled materials.

We found them impressively durable, with no noticeable wear or odor even after all three test wears. The soles got a little bit dirty, but we were able to clean them with a wipe of a damp cloth. As for the price tag, we were astonished when we discovered how affordable these sneakers are—our tester would happily have paid three times the price for the quality and comfort experienced. The shoes come in neutral colors and full and half sizes from 5 to 12. We found that they fit perfectly and were true to size.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Knit textile upper, Cloudfoam midsole and outsole | Sustainability: Primegreen recycled materials

Superga Classic Sneaker

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Sturdily built

Timeless style

Huge choice of sizes and colors

Not the best for all-day wear

First launched in 1925, the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker has become an emblem of Italian style inspired by ladies’ tennis shoes. Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up.

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Choose one of many gorgeous pastel colors, from classic white to violet or light blue.

Best Walking

New balance women's 574 core sneaker.

New Balance

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Wear well for extended periods

Sturdy, reliable construction

Variety of sizes

Sizing can be tricky

The New Balance 574 Core Sneaker wins our vote as an easy, neutral choice that’s well-made and superbly comfortable. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support.

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Mesh upper, EVA midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Recycled polyester, rubber, and bio-based foam

On Running Women's Cloudrift Shoe

  • Comfort 4.3 /5

Sleek, statement-making aesthetic

Easily fit into luggage

Key functional elements

Only available in regular fit

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole.

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Mesh upper, unspecified mid- and outsole | Sustainability: 35 percent recycled materials

Best Sandals

Keen women's elle backstrap sandal.

  • Quality 4.8 /5

Provide stable ride

Cute and casual aesthetic

Reduced environmental impact

Relatively expensive

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort.

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: PET straps, EVA midsole, jute-infused rubber outsole | Sustainability: Straps made from recycled plastic bottles

Best Hiking Sandals

Chaco women's zx2 classic sandal.

Lets you dial in the perfect fit

Handles demanding use

Toe loop may cause discomfort at first

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired.

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

Sizes: 5 to 12 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Polyester straps, PU midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Vegan-friendly construction

Best for the Office

Olukai leather sneakers.

  • Value 4.8 /5

The right balance between rigidity and flex

Two-way heel

Easy to maintain

Back tab may bump against the Achilles tendon

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Leather upper, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Not listed

Most Sustainable

Allbirds women's plant pacers.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Wear in quickly

Cushioned fit

Not in love with the color

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag.

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

Sizes: 5 to 11 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Plant leather upper, SweetFoam midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Made from plant-based or recycled materials

Best Splurge

Frankie4 australia women's winnie ii white suede shoes.

  • Comfort 5 /5

Upscale, slightly retro style

Adjustable fit

Zero breaking-in period required

Some more colors would be nice

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing.

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

Sizes: 6 to 13 | Materials: Leather upper, rPET foam lining, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Lining made from recycled plastic bottles

TripSavvy / Morgan Ashley Parker

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day.

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

TripSavvy / Taylor Fox

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear.

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles.

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced.

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes.

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability.

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

TripSavvy / Anna Popp

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal.

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes.

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder.

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively.

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly.

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers.

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

Walking is a great form of exercise with many health benefits , but wearing the right shoes is key to staying comfortable and injury-free. Whether you walk for fitness or spend significant time on your feet, you need shoes with quality all-around cushioning and support to prevent fatigue and soreness. A good walking shoe should fit well right away without having to be broken in. Ami Sheth, DPM, FACFAS , a podiatrist in California, says you shouldn't feel any pinching or trouble moving your toes when first wearing walking shoes. Shoe styles with a wide range of sizes , including half sizes and widths, will help you find the best fit for you.

To find the best walking shoes on the market, we tested 50+ pairs in Verywell's Testing Lab and in the real world. We spent more than 160 hours wearing and walking in each shoe on pavement, trails, and the treadmill. We then evaluated each pair based on key features , including fit , responsiveness , cushioning , and value . Our top picks received high scores for each of these key categories. Another reason to trust us? A certified running coach from our Review Board reviewed the claims in this article for physiological accuracy and signed off on any claims surrounding how to evaluate a walking shoe's different features .

Best overall, adidas ultraboost light running shoe.

  • Cushioning 4.8 /5

Wide toe box

Lightweight and breathable

Great for all foot shapes

Pricier compared to other options

An impressive shoe with exceptional comfort, lightweight breathability, springy responsiveness, and solid stability, Adidas' Ultraboost Light is an easy top pick. The fit is spot-on and what we expected it to be when ordering true to size. We love the convenient slip-on style with laces, especially if you have a narrower foot that needs a more fitted upper. But the stretchy, breathable upper also gives enough room for wide feet. Thanks to the wide toe box , wearers with all foot shapes and sizes can comfortably splay their toes without having to worry about blisters or chafing.

During test walks, we found the shoes kept our feet secure and stable —no risk of ankle rolling here. We also appreciated the supportive midsole that provides great shock absorption and springy responsiveness. We walked faster, with smoother transitions, in these lightweight shoes . The cushioning is bouncy and plush, but there isn't much added arch support for high-arched wearers. Overall, these shoes are well worth the investment .

Best Women's

Rykä devotion plus 3 walking shoe.

  • Cushioning 4.5 /5
  • Responsiveness 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

Springy, responsive cushioning

Excellent shock absorption

Not as stable or supportive

Ryka's Devotion Plus 3 walking shoe stood out during our testing as an ideal option for fitness walkers or women who are on their feet for most of the day. We love the comfortable fit and soft cushioning, which is one of the reasons we gave it our women’s best overall spot.

During test walks, these sneakers provided great shock absorption and plush comfort from start to finish. We were also impressed by the roomy toe box, which prevented any irritation and contributed to the shoe’s perfect score for blister protection. While most walking and running sneakers have an outsole that bends at the ball of the foot, Ryka's Devotion Plus 3 bends in the middle, at the arch.

This makes it ideal if you have bunions or arthritis in your big toe—but they're not as stable or supportive as others on our list. For daily walks or trips with your dog around the neighborhood, we think this sneaker's springy, responsive cushioning can't be beaten.

Brooks Glycerin GTS 20

  • Stability 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.6 /5

Wide, roomy toe box

Suitable for walking or running

Thick, plush cushioning

The extremely comfortable and versatile Brooks Glycerin GTS 20 shoes were a clear choice for our men’s top pick. When we tried them on, we immediately fell in love with how thick and soft the cushioned midsole felt. And we were impressed by the fit, which was snug in all the right places while offering plenty of room in the toe box. They're also available in wide sizes, in case you have wide feet or need more room for orthotics.

The Glycerin GTS 20's responsive padding makes our ankles and knees feel stable and supported. Although they're designed for running, we also enjoy wearing these sneakers while walking and doing cardio classes. The light, breathable upper is also fairly water-repellent: After getting caught in the rain, we were pleasantly surprised by how quickly these dried without feeling soggy or weighed down.

Best Budget

Asics gel-venture 8.

  • Responsiveness 4 /5
  • Stability 4 /5

Good traction

Laces may not be as durable

The GEL-Venture 8 running shoe is a solid choice for a reasonably priced shoe that’s comfortable and supportive for exercise or all-day wear. During testing, this shoe performed well on treadmills and on pavement and smooth trails. The shoe's GEL cushioning had excellent shock absorption, especially in the heel area, earning it a nearly perfect score for cushioning.

The shoe also stood out in blister protection , thanks to the breathable mesh and wider sizes for a roomy toe box. However, the sizes run small, so order a size up for the best fit. We're also impressed with the shoe’s durable, grippy outsole that provides good traction, even when walking in wet conditions.

Best for Wide Feet

New balance men's fresh foam 1080 v11.

  • Cushioning 5 /5

Plush but lightweight cushioning

Good blister protection

Streamlined, low-profile

Lateral support is lacking

Not protective enough for extreme cold

If you have wide feet or a history of blisters and bunions, you’ll like the wide-size options for New Balance’s 1080v11 Fresh Foam shoes. They offer plenty of room for your toes to spread and just the right amount of cushioning and support for walking, earning them a perfect score for cushioning, upper comfort, and fit.

The full-length Fresh Foam midsole offers ample cushioning without feeling heavy or bulky. We noticed the cloud-like feel immediately, and the shoe still felt very comfortable at the end of a long walk. The snug fit and smooth, breathable fabric helped reduce rubbing and moisture accumulation, which earned the shoe a high rating for blister protection . We also really appreciate the shoe’s rear design, which hugs the back of the foot for a supportive fit and makes it easy to get the shoes on and off.

Best Cushioned

Hoka bondi 7 shoes.

Very durable

Good stability

Lightweight

If you need maximum cushioning in a walking shoe, you can’t go wrong with Hoka's One One Bondi . During testing, it provided plush comfort and stellar shock absorption, earning a perfect score for cushioning. In addition, the shoe scored high in the lateral stability and support category, making it a good choice for walkers who need a firm, stable shoe.

While testing, we found the Bondi to have a lightweight feel , which is difficult to achieve in a shoe with that much cushioning and stability. The sturdy rubber outsole offers reliable traction during walks, adding to the shoe’s durability and stability. This also makes them safe to wear for flexibility and core-building exercises like standing on balance boards . The Bondi is not the most attractive option with a thick, wide sole, but we think its comfort and performance make up for the lack of style. We'd definitely recommend these shoes, especially to those looking for a well-cushioned walking shoe .

Best for Plantar Fasciitis

Vionic tokyo sneaker.

  • Responsiveness 5 /5

Very breathable

Good support and cushioning in heel area

Flexible yet stable

Some prefer a cushier feel

If you have a history of plantar fasciitis , you can protect yourself by wearing a walking shoe with ample cushioning in the heel area, like the Vionic Tokyo shoe . It performs well during treadmill and outdoor walks, offering good protection and earning a perfect score for upper comfort and fit.

During testing, the firm but flexible insole offered additional support and stability from the start to finish of walks. We found the heel counter effective at locking down the rear of the foot, helping prevent any slipping or movement. One of our testers, who is prone to plantar fasciitis, found that the shoe’s cushioning (especially in the heel area) and overall support offered great protection . We also love how breathable these shoes feel, keeping our feet dry and comfortable. With lightweight mesh throughout the shoe, the Tokyo is one of the most breathable shoes we tested, boosting its blister protection rating.

Best for Flat Feet

Altra women's lone peak 7 trail running shoe.

  • Value 4.7 /5

Excellent support

Comes in two widths

Less responsive than other options

Altra's Lone Peak 7 is our top pick for flat-foot walkers , offering e xcellent support and cushioning . The fit is near perfect: It hugs our feet in all the right places without pinching or squeezing anywhere. The shoes’ padding feels extremely comfortable during walks, providing good energy return and putting a spring in our step.

We also like that this pair has excelled lateral support and stability , thanks to platform inserts that position your heel and forefoot in correct alignment to provide maximum support and help correct overpronation . We're also impressed by the shoe’s slip-resistant outsole, which provides good traction on wet and dry surfaces. We love that it has a roomy fit and comes in two different widths, so it can accommodate orthotics or insoles for flat feet if needed.

Best for Hiking

Keen targhee vent hiking shoes.

Wide fit may not work for everyone

Heavier compared to other options

We like this rugged shoe from KEEN for heading off the beaten path for trail walking or light to moderate hikes. It has excellent stability and traction , scoring high for cushioning and upper comfort during our test. The leather-and-mesh upper offers the right balance of protection and breathability, and we appreciate that the water-resistant design is convenient for traversing in wet conditions.

We also like the shoe’s low-profile design for easy mobility and flexibility. During our test, the shoe’s all-terrain rubber outsoles provided excellent grip and added to the shoe’s overall stability . Thanks to the vented panels and smooth interior, it also boasts good blister protection. The shoe features an internal shank and rubber toe cover that can shield your feet from trail hazards.

Best Lightweight

Allbirds tree runners.

Cloud-like comfort

Made with sustainable materials

Not available in half sizes

Traction could be improved

For walking in warm weather, Allbirds' Tree Runners are lightweight and extremely breathable while still offering cushioned comfort . The shoe feels flexible and bouncy with each step. We are also impressed with its sleek, minimalist design that still feels supportive.

The upper is very breathable with minimal seams, helping to protect against blisters. We love that the shoe is made with sustainable, eco-friendly materials such as eucalyptus tree fiber, castor bean oil, and Brazilian sugarcane. The shoe’s insole is designed with thermoregulating Merino wool, which helps to wick away sweat and reduce odors . Even better, if they need a little refresh, these shoes can also be machine-washed .

Best for High Arches

Dansko pace walking shoe.

Stylish enough for casual wear

Very responsive

Odor and stain protection

Toebox is a bit narrow

Could use a little more traction

If you have high arches , your feet will appreciate a flexible but supportive shoe for walking. These Dansko shoes deliver in those areas with lightweight cushioning that provides stellar comfort, support, and shock absorption. During testing, they felt comfortable and flexible right out of the box, with no break-in period needed . The padded collar adds to the shoe's overall comfort, hugging the back of the foot for a snug, locked-in feel and earning the shoes a nearly perfect score for upper comfort.

One of our testers with high arches liked that the shoe provided cushioning and support where she needed it most. Unfortunately, the shoe doesn’t come in wide sizes, and the toe box might be a bit too narrow for some, which hurts the shoe’s blister protection rating. Overall, it provides good flexibility and impact protection for walking and could also be used for other activities or all-day casual wear.

Best On Running

On cloud 5 sneakers.

Great arch support

Suitable for warm weather

Not supportive enough for hiking

On Running is a popular brand known for its high-tech, high-performance running, walking, and training shoes. The On Cloud 5's are our favorite pick from the brand for walking because they're responsive, comfortable, and super sleek. When we tried them on, we were happy to find a true-to-size fit, with enough room in the toe box for our toes to splay.

On test walks and runs, our feet felt stable on the road, treadmill, and grass, but the shoes were not cushioned or supportive enough for hikes on uneven terrain. If you're a frequent hiker, we recommend Keen's Targhee Vent Hiking Shoe. Still, for long-distance walks and all-day wear , we love this comfortable shoe that offers springy responsiveness (thanks to the curved sole) to quickly propel you to your next step. We appreciate that the cushioning has a great balance between soft and firm while still providing good shock absorption and reliable comfort.

Most Responsive

Nike motiva walking shoes.

Ample shock absorption

Solid support

May run big

Nike's Motiva Women's Walking Shoes feature a unique exaggerated rocker sole that delivers smooth and springy responsiveness for quick and effortless transitions between strides. One of our testers, who usually drags her feet during walks, found that the shoe's shape actively propelled her forward with a bouncy feel —no dragging here.

We noticed that the shoe's midsole cushioning felt soft and supportive, keeping our feet stable during short and long walks. What also helped to keep our feet stable is the wide and roomy toe box that offers ample room for toes to splay out. And we found the lightweight and breathable shoes to be super comfortable too—like a spa for your feet, one tester said.

Best Waterproof

Vessi cityscape shoes.

  • Value 4.9 /5

Great traction

May run small

The best waterproof sneakers often look quite clunky and can cost you over budget, which is why we love Vessi's Cityscape Classic Waterproof Sneakers —they're sleek and budget-friendly. Waterproof shoes are a great choice if you live in a wet climate or hike near bodies of water, and an essential feature when trekking on wet surfaces is a grippy outsole. Luckily, we found that these waterproof shoes offer excellent traction to prevent any slipping and sliding.

During test walks, the lightweight cushioning provided support without weighing our feet down. We love the excellent shock absorption, solid arch support, and springy responsiveness of the midsole, which added to the shoes' overall comfort. We also appreciate the breathable knit upper , which is waterproof but still allows for much-needed airflow to prevent overheating and odor.

Best New Balance

New balance women's fresh foam x 1080 v12 running shoe.

Great for all terrains

Too much arch support for some

When we tested the best New Balance shoes , the Fresh Foam 1080 v12s were one of our top picks. They're stable, springy, and supportive shoes that are great for walking, running, and training on all terrains . When we first tried them on, we noticed that the breathable mesh upper molded to the shape of our feet, offering a universal true-to-size fit.

Thanks to the super-cushioned midsole and rocker-shaped outsole, the shoes provide great stability, shock absorption, and springy responsiveness during walks. While the shoes do offer a lot of cushion, especially in the arch, they never feel weighed down or heavy. In fact, we love how these lightweight shoes help to propel you smoothly and quickly to your next stride.

When we tried them on, we appreciated the true-to-size, completely customizable fit. The shoes come with an orthotic insole, fitting spacers, and an arch booster insert so that you can find the right level of support.

After logging many miles in our Orthofeet Kitas, we never experienced any knee or ankle instability. Most importantly, the shoes are super comfortable—one tester, who has bunions and plantar fasciitis, said these are her new go-to walking shoes.

Best Slip-On

Skechers go walk flex alani.

Budget-friendly

Machine washable

Breathable upper

Limited sizes

Laces aren't adjustable

Whether you live a busy lifestyle or take your sneakers on the go, purchasing a pair of slip-ons can save you time and (in this case) money. The Skechers Go Walk Flex Alani shoes are a budget-friendly choice that offers all-day comfort and fatigue-free feet. One tester even compared wearing these shoes to walking effortlessly on a cloud.

Despite having a limited range of sizes, we found a true-to-size fit that hugged our feet in all the right places. Our toes had plenty of room to splay, thanks to the wide toe box, which helped with overall stability . During test walks, the thick, supportive, and cushioned midsole also helped keep our feet stable, as well as deliver shock absorption and impact protection on all types of terrains. Best for Cold Weather

Topo athletic rekover 2 women's recovery shoe.

Topo Athletic

Great recovery shoe

Barely-there feel

Short toe box

Made with a cozy merino wool upper and durable Vibram rubber outsole , these shoes are a great choice if you venture out in cool to cold weather. We wore Topo's REKOVR 2 shoes for daily outdoor walks, running errands, and casual wear around the house—appreciating the slim, low-profile design. While we didn't walk on trails, we did find this pair to be super sturdy on indoor floors and pavement, with a barely-there feel .

On longer walks, we enjoy the slightly springy responsiveness that feels rather bouncy with each stride. And the soft and squishy sole, made of a therapeutic recovery foam, makes standing for hours at a time comfortable. What also makes these shoes super comfortable is their textured insoles that deliver a foot massage feeling with each heel-to-toe stride.

Best for Narrow Feet

Adidas women's supernova 2.0 running shoes.

  • Cushioning 4.3 /5
  • Responsiveness 4.8 /5

Springy responsiveness

Great on all surfaces

Highly cushioned

Right out of the box, we noticed that Adidas' Supernova 2.0 Sneakers run rather slim, making them the perfect pair for wearers with narrow feet. But if you have wide feet, don't sweat, just try a half-size up from your normal size to find a comfortable fit—like one of our testers who has wider feet did.

The shoes are super stable , with ample cushioning and support for long walks and runs. Thanks to the thickly padded tongue and heel , we had no issues with blisters or irritation. Walking on pavement, trails, and the treadmill, we appreciated the ample shock absorption and springy responsiveness that helped lessen impact strikes and propel us forward faster. We also love the squishy yet firm sole that has a slight curve at the arch for added support.

Best for Long Distances

Kizik women's athens.

  • Cushioning 4.4 /5
  • Responsiveness 4.3 /5

Easy slip-on

Slip-on shoes often lack the structure, support, and stability of a high-performing, lace-up walking shoe. But Kizik's Athens Sneakers offer just about all the features of a regular sneaker in a sleek, convenient slip-on design. We walked for miles at a time without any pain, discomfort, or foot fatigue in these stylish slip-ons (that come in various fun colors).

During testing, we found that the shoe's cushioning is middle of the line, not too soft yet not too firm. The sole is supportive, offering solid arch support and ample shock absorption , even on uneven terrains. But the Athens is less bouncy and responsive than other picks on our list, like Nike's Motiva Women's Walking Shoe, which helped to propel us to our next stride.

Best for Everyday

Lululemon women's running shoe.

  • Cushioning 4 /5

Not supportive enough for running

A streamlined and sleek option for casual walking and everyday wear, lululemon's Blissfeel 2 Sneakers can take you from the gym to a coffee date in style. We love that the shoes come in various fun colors so you can find the right fit for you. These are the perfect pick for running errands, hot girl walks, and light athletic activity—according to our test.

During test walks, we noticed that the minimalist shoes felt lightweight and breathable , helping to propel us forward. The sole is firmer than many other picks on our list, like Asics GEL-Numbus 25, but it still felt comfortable on casual walks and for all-day wear. You should note that these are not a great pick for running or other high-impact activities because they didn't provide enough support, stability, or shock absorption when we wore them running or fast-distance walking.

In total, we tested over 50 pairs of walking shoes, but only 23 of them made it to our final list of recommendations. While these three ultimately fell short in one or more key categories, we did find some noteworthy features.

  • Ryka's Romia Walking Shoes are stable, supportive, and stylish. But we were unable to find a solid fit because the laces are not adjustable. We also wish they came in more than two colors (black and white).
  • While the Allbird Tree Runners are lightweight and breathable, we found that the upper was quite flimsy and not protective. And during test walks, these shoes didn't provide enough shock absorption and responsiveness for long hours of comfort.
  • If you're in the market for a heavy-duty hiking shoe, the Teva Canyonview may be worth checking out. But during testing, we found the sole and ankle cup to be quite stiff and rather uncomfortable.

How We Selected and Tested the Best Walking Shoes

To develop our best walking shoes list, we tested each pair of sneakers by walking in them outside on roads, trails, and on the treadmill. We walked at least 15 miles in each shoe and tested them during short and long walks—totaling over 160 hours of testing. We did at least one walk on the treadmill in each shoe to evaluate performance on a softer surface. We also wore the shoes for a full day (8 hours) and for casual wear to assess overall comfort and support. To evaluate the shoes' traction and weather protection, we walked in wet weather conditions. Finally, we performed a "bend test," by bending and twisting the shoe to gauge it's durability and overall quality.

Each shoe was assessed for cushioning, fit, responsiveness, comfort, stability and support, and blister protection, and we scored each attribute with a rating of 1 (would not recommend) to 5 (highly recommend). We also gave each shoe a value score, which considers the shoe attributes in relation to their price. Finally, we hired a carpenter to cut our top shoes in half in the Verywell Testing Lab. We also had our on-site podiatrist, Diana Levin Valencia, DPM , evaluate the construction of each shoe.

We spoke to four podiatrists to better understand what key features to look for in a walking shoe. Each podiatrist also told us which shoe brands and features work best for different foot types and issues.

  • Ami Sheth, DPM, FACFAS, podiatrist based in California
  • Diana Levin Valencia, DPM, podiatrist based in New York City
  • Emmanuel Fuzaylov, DPM , podiatrist based in New York City
  • Mark Mendeszoon, DPM, FACFAS , podiatrist based in Ohio

What to Look for in Walking Shoes

A good pair of walking shoes should fit comfortably right out of the box—no break-in period required. Make sure there’s at least a half-inch of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

It's best to go to a store and try on several options to get a feel for the right size and desired roominess. Everyone's feet are different, so brands that work for some walkers may not work best for you and vice versa. If you wear custom orthotics or inserts, look for a shoe that’s deep enough to accommodate them or has removable insoles.

A good pair of walking shoes will have gel, foam, or air midsole cushioning, which reduces impact and helps with shock absorption as you’re walking. “Look for walking shoes with good shock absorption and minimal friction against the skin,” Fuzaylov says.

Support is key when choosing a walking shoe, especially for those who have a history of foot pain and issues. “The shoe should have a good sturdy sole that is flexible at the toes only, not through the midfoot, and one that you cannot wring out like a dishrag,” Sheth says.

Make sure there’s enough support in the arch area, too. “Over time, flat shoes with no arch support may cause plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and ankle pain,” Fuzaylov says.

Walking shoes should be durable enough for all-day wear, but more lightweight than most running shoes. Stick with shoes from quality brands that specialize in walking (and running) shoes and look for sturdy rubber outsoles. What should be avoided are court shoes and cross trainers, which are designed for more lateral movements.

Breathability

If you do a lot of fitness walking, especially in warm weather, you’ll want a shoe that won’t make you overheat. “It should be made of a breathable material such as mesh or a leather material,” Mendeszoon says.

Frequently Asked Questions

The short answer is that yes, running shoes can be used for walking . However, it’s important to understand some key differences between running and walking shoes to decide if you want to wear running shoes for walking.

Running shoes are usually lightweight to allow for quick movement, while walking shoes are typically heavier to help maintain stability.

You’ll get more cushioning in the heel and forefoot with running shoes, which also means that they have less flexibility. Walking shoes generally have more flex at the forefoot, allowing walkers to push off with their toes and have a better range of motion. Running shoes are also usually more breathable than walking shoes since running makes your feet hotter.

Whether you choose running shoes or walking shoes really depends on the type of walking you do. If you’re going to be doing a combination of running and walking or you walk a lot in hot weather, go with a pair of running shoes.

In general, walking shoes last about 350 to 500 miles before the support, cushioning, and shock absorption are worn out, leaving you susceptible to injury. For most people, that’s about six to eight months, if you wear them regularly. Even though the shoes may appear to be in good condition, they’re ready to be replaced by then.

Walking properly can help prevent your shoes from creasing. For example, walking up on your toes or on your heels can lead to creases in your shoes, so practice landing on the ball of your foot instead.

Wearing shoes that are too loose may also lead to creasing. Make sure your shoes are tied so that your foot is snug and not sliding around. When selecting walking shoes, get the proper fit . “The width of the shoe should be wide enough that you can wiggle your toes without too much motion in the forefoot,” Dr. Mendeszoon says.

When you’re not wearing your shoes, you can stuff them with socks to help retain their shape and avoid creasing.

Quality walking shoes can cost between $70 and $160 or more. Pricier shoes will typically be more durable and are often made with features to help walkers with specific issues, like flat feet or plantar fasciitis. Budget-friendlier walking shoes are better suited for healthy walkers with no specific foot or gait issues.

It may be worth spending a little more on a walking shoe for a pair that will last longer, especially if you plan to use the shoes in rough conditions. The cheapest walking shoe on our list was $70 when we published this list, while our top recommendations, Ryka's Devotion Plus 3 and Brooks' Glycerin GTS 20 , were $100 and $160 respectively.

As a running coach, marathon runner, and fitness writer, Christine Luff , ACE-CPT, has spent years researching and recommending running and walking shoes. To walk in comfort and reduce injury risk , she suggests getting properly fitted for walking shoes and replacing them regularly.

Whether you’re backpacking, sightseeing on a rainy day, or just commuting to work, a great pair of waterproof walking shoes should be on your feet whenever the clouds open up. Nobody wants to walk around with soggy socks!

Walking around with wet feet can lead to health issues like cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection that can enter through a crack or break in your skin, according to Dr. Suzanne Levine, a podiatric foot surgeon and author. Levine also recommends prioritizing comfort, as she’s seen a plethora of health issues relating to poor footwear choices throughout her career, including fungus, dermatitis, blisters, fissures, and corns.

For this story, we chose the 10 best waterproof walking shoes from a total of 115 pairs of shoes that we’ve tested through a variety of real-world tests. We looked for options that kept our feet dry in wet situations while also being comfortable enough to walk long distances in. We looked for high ratings on comfort, fit, value, quality, performance, and durability. These are our favorite waterproof walking shoes for men.

Best Overall

Forsake waterproof sneaker boot.

These are comfortable and versatile enough to wear in different situations around a city, to work, to the bar, and out on the trail.

They’re not built for intense hiking.

The Forsake Wild Sky Mid Boots don’t look like they’re waterproof. Rather, they look like a stylish pair of high-top sneakers — just way more functional. They can fend off any water that’s thrown at them (as long as the water doesn’t get in above the ankle), yet they manage to stay breathable. These boots are comfortable straight out of the box and got even more comfy as we wore them. They fit true to size and we liked the mid-cut for ankle support. We also found the sole to be of excellent quality and firm enough to provide long-lasting support.

During our tests, these boots were just as great for walking around the city as they were on short hikes that included hills, steep embankments, and downed logs. We could also see ourselves wearing them to work without feeling like we’re being too casual. This versatility makes the Forsake Wild Sky Mid Book ideal for travel. Granted, if you plan to spend most of your trip doing more intense hiking of five miles or more, we’d opt for a more rugged boot with thicker tread.

Most Comfortable

Danner mountain 600 hiking boot.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

These are a worthy investment in comfortable, high-quality boots.

They aren’t very breathable, so they’re not ideal for hot destinations.

Lots of waterproof boots are flashy, but Danner keeps things classy with its hiking boots, and they also happen to be super comfy. We found them very easy to slip into, and they conformed to our feet pretty quickly considering they’re a pair of high-quality leather boots, especially after our first time wearing them. The leather is coated with Gore-tex to keep water out, and we loved the mid-ankle support. They felt very sturdy and like they’ll last for years. Danner really makes that possible with its recrafting program, which refurbishes your boots using the same equipment and materials they were originally made with. One thing to note is that they aren’t very breathable, so are probably best worn in cooler, wetter places.

Best Everyday

Carhartt 6in waterproof wedge work boot.

These are high-quality boots that’ll last for years.

They’re pretty heavy at nearly four pounds per pair, double the weight of some similar boots on this list.

We wore these boots for up to 10 hours a day through big, deep puddles, and they held up spectacularly. They’re surprisingly stylish for a work boot and comfortable right out of the box. Leather boots usually take a long time to break in, but these didn’t take much time to adjust to. We did notice some excess rubbing on the calf, but that could be remedied by wearing longer socks. These boots are supportive, have great traction and will last you years, but they are on the heavy side, so you may want to wear them instead of packing them en route to your destination.

Best Lightweight

Columbia newton ridge plus waterproof hiking boots.

  • Durability 4 /5

They’re incredibly light for hiking shoes, and they’re affordable.

They’re not that tall, so water may get in over the top if you’re walking through creeks or deep water.

For a great boot at an unbeatable price, it’s hard to overlook the Newton Ridge Plus from Columbia. These boots are very comfortable and have excellent traction. We wore them on a cave hike, across shallow rivers, and through plenty of puddles on a camping trip and they held off whatever was thrown at them. We were surprised at how light they are for the price, and liked that they come in plenty of bright color options as opposed to just neutrals or brown. These boots are a great value and suitable for many types of adventures.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 17 | PU coated leather, suede, and mesh upper, Omni-tech waterproof membrane, Techlite midsole, Omni-grip rubber outsole | 1.9 pounds

Best for Hiking

Salomon x ultra 4 mid gore-tex hiking boots.

These are light, comfortable, and surprisingly breathable.

The traction could be better.

We put these highly-rated boots to the test straight away with a 7-mile hike and they didn’t let us down. They were comfortable straight away and despite our concerns about the waterproof mesh, water dripped right off. The Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid Boots continued to impress in our ensuing tests, and we couldn’t get over how breathable they are — a rarity among waterproof footwear. One criticism we have is that we felt the traction could be better for such a dedicated hiking boot, as we found ourselves slipping on a few occasions.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 14 | PU coated leather and textile upper, Gore-tex, rubber sole | 1.8 pounds

Best for Winter

Blundstone thermal chelsea boot.

These slip-ons have a timeless style.

They’re best for cold weather.

Blundstones are popular for a reason and the Australian company’s Thermal Chelsea Boots prove why. The style is iconic — we’d definitely wear them out to a nice dinner — and they’re truly waterproof, even on the elastic. We loved wearing them straight out of the box, and it’s so easy to simply slip into them and go. Our feet never got too sweaty, but we didn’t wear them doing anything too strenuous because we wouldn’t trust them for hiking (though some people do). This model has Thinsulate insulation as well as a removable sheepskin footbed, so they’re ideal for cooler climates. That said, you can take out the footbed and continue wearing them as long as it’s not too hot.

The Details: Sizes 4 to 13 | Waterproof leather, Thinsulate insulation, removable sheepskin footbed, TPU outsole

Best Sandal

Teva hurricane xlt2 sandals.

  • Comfort 4.5 /5

These sandals are compact for packing and come in a variety of colors.

They don’t come in half-sizes.

Tevas are pretty much a must when it comes to travel, and for good reason. We loved the squishy yet strong soles and found walking around in them for five or six hours to be a breeze (certainly the wind on our toes was part of that feeling, but they’re also super comfortable). We wore them in a pool and they didn’t absorb water, as promised. And we loved the style, especially the options with colorblocking and patterns. One thing we found tricky was figuring out how to tighten the straps, so make sure you try them on at home before going on your trip.

Best Water Shoes

Olukai moku pae shoes.

These are like light and grippy sandals, but with wraparound foot protection.

They fit big, so order a half-size down.

Long known for its thong sandals, Olukai has made some mighty fine shoes that are perfect for travel. We tested Moku Pae Boat Shoes while kayaking and walking around and were thoroughly impressed. They offered excellent grip on land and got dry quickly despite being soaking wet. However, one thing we found frustrating is that it took an annoyingly long time to clean the sand out of the bottom, so bring a shoe bag to pack them in. The best part about these water shoes is that they fully cover your feet, which adds extra protection as well as support.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 15 | Mesh upper, rubber sole

Best Chukka Boot

Clarks morris peak waterproof chukka boot.

  • Durability 4.5 /5

The padded inserts make them very comfortable.

Wear them before you travel to break them in.

These Chukka-style boots are made with high-quality leather, so it took a little bit to break them in, but they became comfortable after about a week. They also felt a bit heavy, which speaks to the quality, but they didn’t feel cumbersome. In terms of waterproofing, they were excellent and managed to keep our socks dry despite a lot of water being dropped on them. One thing we found awkward was the thick sole, but that could be a personal preference. An added bonus with these boots is that they come with well-padded, comfortable inserts, which turned out to be one of our favorite aspects of the boot.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 13 | Leather upper, thermoplastic rubber sole | 2.5 pounds

The picks in this article came from five different Travel + Leisure tests in which we tested 115 pairs of shoes across the U.S. and assessed each one in the real world. We tested hiking shoes, water shoes, waterproof boots , slip-on shoes, and shoes for travel, and sorted through the results to find the best waterproof walking shoes for this article. During testing, we rated the shoes for breathability, comfort, support, traction, waterproofing, and durability. After the initial tests, we continued to test the shoes that rated well for another six months to make sure they held up over time.

Tips for Buying Waterproof Walking Shoes

Know the difference between waterproof and water-resistant.

There are actually three levels of water rankings. Water-resistant materials, like leather, will be able to resist the penetration of water, but they won’t do too well if soaked through. Water-repellent products are treated with a coating that will cause water to drip off. Waterproof is the most impermeable to water, and Gore-tex is the most reliable standard for this category, though there are other materials that also do the trick.

Prioritize comfort

According to podiatric foot surgeon Dr. Levine, comfort is non-negotiable for any men's travel shoe, and you shouldn’t need to break them in first. “It's important because you don’t want any skin breakdown or exacerbation of any existing biomechanical difficulties in the foot,” she says. So make sure the shoes you pick feel good by trying them on at home before going outside. If you do have to break them in, make sure they’re comfortable before you set off on your travels.

Wear appropriate socks

If you’re going to spend money on a good pair of waterproof walking shoes, make sure you get some good-quality socks to match. That right materials should enhance not just your comfort, but also whether or not your feet sweat in them. Look for socks made from Merino wool or cotton, and be sure to make sure they’re tall enough to go above the shoe so there’s no friction on your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Levine says to always keep the inside of your waterproof shoes as dry as possible. If they do get wet, aerate them well before wearing them again. She also says to check the creases of your shoes for any fungus and wipe it away. If you take good care of them, they’ll last longer.

If you want to make your regular shoes waterproof, you can buy a water-based, waterproof spray or rub on a waterproof cream. Before you do that, make sure you really want your shoes to be waterproof. Remember that by waterproofing them, you’re reducing their breathability and drying time if water gets inside.

According to Havard Health , experts recommend wearing your shoes for a maximum of 300 to 500 miles, which translates to a year if wearing them five days a week for 30 minutes a day. If you’re wearing them less often, they will last longer.

How we test walking shoes

Your browser does not support the video tag.

First and foremost, we buy the walking shoes we want to test using our own funds. For us, the strict implementation of this rule helps us as testers to prevent ourselves from advocating shoes for no good reason.

Following that is the actual wearing of the shoes. We do all the typical things we would do while in walking shoes - traveling, eating out, going to parks, standing all day, going to work - so, basically anything! This step allows us to share our thoughts and own feelings about the shoe's performance on long hours of wandering, walking on concrete, during rains, and other factors.

Finally, we cut the shoes into pieces. And we mean this literally! We put them through different kinds of tests inside our lab. Like for example, rating their breathability through a smoke machine, or by viewing the upper through our microscope or our source of bright light.

Best travel shoes overall

On Cloud 5

What makes it the best?

For excursions and longer trips, nothing can compete with the ultimate travel walking shoe, On Cloud 5. This is the pair that makes the happiest place on Earth double up on happiness because of how pleasurable it is on foot even after infinite hours! Considering that it’s a neutral shoe yet we never felt unstable whether on concrete or cobblestones is no less than amazing.

We didn’t have to overthink our decision if we would go sock or sockless every time we went out with Cloud 5: no blisters, regardless! Plus, no sweaty and stinky feet. Satisfyingly, our experience is coherent with the breathability test result we got in our lab. The shoe scored 5/5 on our smoke test, meaning the airflow is superb, perfect for day-long outings.

On our walks, we adored the shoe’s smooth heel-to-toe transition. Back in the lab, we tested for its flexibility using our digital force gauge, which indicated a low resistance (35% lower than average). This means it only took a small amount of force to bend the shoe, proving Cloud 5’s extreme flexibility. Carrying Cloud 5 on our feet and bags is also never a bother. Weighing the shoes, we discovered it’s only 7.5 oz (212g), 24% lighter than average.

The problem is, we found it to be really snug. We measured the forefoot’s widest part as 89.5 mm. This is not only 6.7% narrower than average, but actually the narrowest among all that we’ve tested. Therefore, we advise wide footers to skip On Cloud 5.

  • Perfect for all-day wear
  • Unbelievably lightweight
  • Can do low-impact workouts
  • Amazing in-shoe feel
  • Very breathable
  • Super easy on-off
  • Great flexibility
  • Regular laces are added
  • Sustainable materials (44%)
  • Not for wide feet
  • Lacks durability
  • Outsole catches pebbles

Travel shoes with the best comfort

Allbirds Tree Runners

After thoroughly testing the Allbirds Tree Runners on our feet and in the lab, we came to the conclusion that it is the most comfortable walking shoe for travel. We picked it for this category because its construction unlocks so much value for those who are on trips. Plus, it has an accommodating toebox and an adequate stack height that turns dashing from one destination to the next into an enjoyable experience.

As we put the Allbirds Tree Runners to work in rigorous walking sessions, we were amazed at how weightless it felt. True enough, when we measured its weight in the lab, it came in at 8.6 oz (245g), making it 23.1% lighter than the average walking shoe. In addition to this, the same construction provides travel-friendly features that make it perfect for trips: namely, its easy-to-pack nature and its slip-on build, which are both afforded by its upper.

Having the Allbirds Tree Runners on foot really allowed our toes to splay out nicely. In the lab, we measured the width of its upper (at its widest part) to be 99.8 mm which is a whole 3.9 mm wider than that of the average walking shoe. This translates to adequate room for medium to wide feet. Say goodbye to squished toes!

Another great thing about the Allbirds Tree Runners is the fact that it proved to be a reliable walking partner for us even during our longer sessions. To take a deeper look into this, we cut the shoe in half to measure its key dimensions. What stood out to us is that despite its lightweight build, it still has a good amount of foam underneath. Its heel stack height of 31.1 mm is even a bit larger than that of the average walking shoe (31.0 mm)!

While the Allbirds Tree Runners proves to be a great partner for traveling for regular feet, we don’t recommend the shoe for those who need that extra underfoot support from the get-go. The insole is removable, though!

  • Extra comfortable interiors
  • Equally cozy in 40 and 85ºF
  • Can be worn without socks
  • Lightweight and packable
  • Flexible sole
  • Removable insoles
  • Easy to style
  • Machine washable
  • Sustainable design
  • No half sizes
  • Lacks arch support

Best travel shoes for all-day wear

Hoka Transport

Spending dozens of hours of travel wearing Hoka Transport gave us nothing but indulgence, which is primarily why it is the best for all-day wear! Pleasure and protection - these are what Transport granted our feet during our day outs. It’s generously cushioned and padded everywhere that our feet feel like standing on pillows even when we’re really out on a trip on concrete, cobblestone, or even trail.

The whole time we walked in Hoka Transport, our feet were cradled with softness with just a hint of firmness. Upon checking in our lab, we learned that our durometer reflected 21.9 HA, which is 23% softer foam than the average. We found this plushness absolutely pleasing for uninterrupted city cruising.

Our constant strolls on hardened surfaces got us craving stable walking shoes. Thankfully, with Transport, we met our match. We investigated more in the lab and discovered that what aids its stability is its stiff construction. Our digital force gauge punched in a 30.4N resistance to bending, making it 45% stiffer than average.

Even though we logged in lots of mileage in Hoka Transport, its outsole didn’t sustain any damage. Using our caliper and durometer, we found that the outsole is thicker by 2 mm and firmer by 13% than the average, implying that the outsole is indeed hardwearing.

However, our main concern is the ventilation. Transport only scored 2/5 on our smoke test since it allowed minimal smoke to pass through its upper. Because of this, we best recommend wearing Hoka Transport in colder months.

  • Unbelievably comfy
  • Spacious toe box
  • Adequately cushioned
  • Superior traction
  • Reliable outsole durability
  • Easy to slip in and out
  • True-to-size fit
  • Easy to clean
  • Sustainable
  • Not great for warm weather
  • Squeaky during break-in

Travel shoes with the best support

On Cloudnova Form

After testing and literally breaking down walking shoes, we established that the travel shoe with the best support is the On Cloudnova Form. Everything in this shoe just screams support – from the bottom to the sides of the foot – there isn’t anything to be insecure about! Plus, being out and about with Form all day is just straight-up awesome!

When we cruised towns with Form, it’s as if we forgot about the ground because of the substantial foam we felt beneath our feet, especially our heels. True enough, when we measured the stack heights using our caliper, it read 36.1 mm and 19.3 mm, which yielded a 16.8 mm drop. This is huge as it is, but relative to the average, this is 63.1% larger!

We also measured how hard the midsole is and it turned out that it’s 35% firmer. During our tours, this translated to fantastic support that allowed us to last the whole day with no complaints! In terms of flimsiness, we experienced none. We discovered that this could be attributed to the stiffness of the shoe. Cloudnova Form withstood bending at 20.9N, making it 16% stiffer than average. Due to this, we are able to confidently shift laterally in the shoes.

However, we don’t recommend traveling in Cloudnova Form during snowy seasons. We stuck it in our freezer for 20 minutes and it resulted in an even firmer (29.7% more) and stiffer (57% more) shoe.

  • Excellent for all-day wear
  • Very stable and supportive
  • Great in-shoe comfort
  • Non-constricting toebox
  • Reflective elements
  • Sustainable materials
  • Appealing design
  • Lacks durability (especially the upper)
  • A little heavier than average

Travel shoes with the best style

On Cloudnova

The walking shoe with the best design, in our opinion, is On Cloudnova. Outside, it is clean and refined, perfect for dressed-up and down fits. We love how Cloudnova combined casual and sporty into an insanely cool look. Inside, it feels sensational, making distant wanderings a divine experience.

We could walk on tours nonstop when we’re in Cloudnova, thanks to its footbed that didn’t cause us any fatigue. We investigated in the lab, and it turns out that at 29.9 HA, the midsole is almost as firm as the average: Cloudnova is only 4% firmer. This resulted in foam with balanced softness and firmness.

Walking in the airport or on the cobblestones is all the same to us with Cloudnova: no wobbly feel! We found in our flexibility test that it exerted a 29.9N force to counter the bending, making it 2.6% less stiff than average. We discovered that this, combined with the wide base, allowed for a steady shoe.

What we disliked was the weight that came with this stunner. At 10.7 oz (303g), we realized that it was 12.2% heavier than average. So if you prioritize lightness for your travels, we advise skipping On Cloudnova.

  • Great travel shoe
  • Attractive design
  • Comfortable in-shoe feel
  • Fits well straight from the box
  • High quality
  • 10% recycled materials
  • Sole catches debris
  • Mid-cut is not for everyone

Best waterproof travel shoes

On Cloud 5 Waterproof

While traveling, we require something that can get us through hours of leisure fun without obtaining bruises, blisters, and aches. We prefer walking shoes that can accompany us on vacays come rain or shine, with our feet still feeling at home. This is On Cloud 5 Waterproof but more, which is why we chose it as the best waterproof walking shoe for wandering.

We roamed around streets in Cloud 5 Waterproof during inclement weather, and we confirmed that this walking shoe is completely impervious. Amazingly, our feet remained warm and dry on brisk and rainy trips. Backing up our conclusion is our smoke test, in which the shoe’s upper prohibited the smoke from breaking out, scoring 1/5 on breathability. We also brought out the big guns and viewed the upper through our microscope, showing an incredibly interlaced and thick fabric.

What kept us pain-free in a whole day of walking was the overall support we got from the shoes. We investigated more in the lab and found that the midsole has a 30.4 HA hardness, which is 10% firmer than average. Furthermore, we tested Cloud 5 Waterproof’s flexibility and our digital force gauge recorded 23.0N, 18% stiffer than average. The combination of both figures translated to more stable rides during our travels.

However, we found this shoe on the snug side. Accordingly, our caliper showed that the width of the widest part of the upper was 94.7 mm, sitting near the average at 95.9 mm. Therefore, we recommend Cloud 5 Waterproof best for people with medium to narrow feet.

  • Super light for its kind
  • Easy on-and-off
  • Sustainable materials (40%)
  • Catches rocks and debris
  • Can get smelly

Best budget travel shoes

Skechers Summits

We have to admit, we were initially drawn to the Skechers Summits because of its affordability. We got it for only $65 when the average walker could go as high as $87. After testing it, we realized that it was more than just an attractive price tag. Its marshmallow midsole was just divine, even in the cold! So was its lightness. T’was the best walking shoe for travelers on a budget, indeed!

We assessed the softness of the midsole using our HA durometer in the lab. This digital device gave the Skechers Summits a rating of 21.1, making it significantly lower (therefore softer) than the 25.0 average. We loved how it made us feel so comfortable, especially during longer walks.

We have to point out that the midsole remained softer than average even during the cold. After putting it in the freezer for a time, we found that the midsole was still relatively marshmallow-like at 28.3 HA. The typical midsole would have stiffened up to 32.8 HA.

The shoe’s lightness was also something that we could not overlook. The Skechers Summits weighed only 6.95 ounces or 197 grams. The average weight of walking shoes was 9.59 ounces or 272 grams. The shaved weight allowed us to persist for much longer in our walks.

It’s just a shame that this shoe wasn’t the best pick for summer excursions. Its upper just was not breathing as expected. It only got a 2 out of 5 in our ventilation tests.

  • Like walking on soft clouds
  • Super lightweight
  • Easy to put on and off
  • Very affordable
  • Highly flexible
  • Surprisingly durable upper
  • Suitable for casual attire
  • Lacks breathability
  • Exposed foam wears out fast
  • Memory Foam doesn't last long

How to buy the right travel walking shoe

Perfect walking shoe.png

Give your feet some love by asking yourself a few simple questions:

Is the shoe light enough?

Generally, a shoe is considered lightweight if it weighs below 250 grams per shoe (women) or below 350 grams per shoe (men).

But your perception of the shoe heaviness can differ from another person’s. That’s why you should pick the weight range that:

  • won’t drag your foot down during long periods of wear
  • won’t add too much weight to your luggage

Tip: Weigh the lightest of your sneakers and look for a shoe within that range or lighter.

Is it breathable enough?

Shoes with mesh and knit uppers are your best bet if you are looking for the following features:

  • consistent airflow throughout the day: no sweaty or smelly feet
  • little-to-no maintenance: easy to clean
  • easily return to their normal shape after being squished in the luggage

Is the cushioning right?

Your shoe buddy should be able to maintain support for hours of walking.

This is one of the key criteria that we consider in our top 10 travel walking shoes. Going for either one of those will guarantee all-day support and cushioning.

Tips:

  • If you want extra underfoot plushness, go for shoes with a memory foam insert.
  • If you tend to overpronate, get a shoe with a firmer midsole or added arch support.
  • To add your own custom orthotics, select shoes with removable insoles.

What is the best closure type for you?

Along with the good old laces, you can consider shoes with a Velcro strap (these are not only made for kids!) or fun stretchy bungee laces. These types of closure allow to quickly release the fit and adjust the snugness once the foot starts to swell.

If you want to be able to slip the shoe on and off in an instant, especially on the transport, go for slip-on footwear or shoes with a collapsible heel, that can quickly go from a sneaker to a comfy slipper.

Is the outsole reliable?

Walking shoes typically don’t require as much traction as running shoes . That’s why most of them don’t even have a rubber outsole.

  • If you are worried about grinding your soles to dust before the trip ends, look for shoes that have a full-length rubber outsole.
  • If you are particular about staying sure-footed on wet smooth surfaces, consider slip-resistant options.

How much is the fish?

You are lucky as over 80% of our travel walking shoes fall into the budget-friendly range. You can easily get a pair under $100 or even as low as $20, if you check out the best deals .

Brooks Ghost 15

Ghost 15

The Brooks Ghost 15's continues to reign supreme in our testing for offering neutral support with excellent arch support. This pair is available in narrow, wide and extra-wide sizing to ensure a proper fit in the toe box. The larger heel drop helps lessen impact when striking the ground to minimize rear foot and Achilles tendon pain.

We found this pair comfortable when walking, running and even during gym workouts. I regularly reach for this pair when working out at the gym as they're comfortable to wear when walking on the treadmill and during a strength training session. Plus, compared to other more stable shoes, I like the sleeker appearance. "The shoe felt supportive while standing for long periods of time (like at a concert) as well as when walking around a city,” said one tester. Another tester with chronic foot pain said she usually finds "no shoes comfortable to wear, but these are amazing."

All testers gave this pair high marks for comfort and fit. "The mesh material allows for a more breathable shoe, which is great for when I am using them for long distance walking," said one tester who wore this pair on multi-hour walks. Another tester even said, "My feet were never sore and I walked A LOT with these." This pair isn't suited for someone who prefers thick cushioning.

Under Armour Charged Assert 10

Charged Assert 10

Most walking shoes retail for over $100, meanwhile this pair from Under Armour is about half that. It’s an extremely popular style with nearly 5,000 reviews on Amazon. Featuring a classic design, breathable knit upper and a soft sock liner, this pair is designed to be versatile enough for park strolls or fitness classes. We appreciate the three width options and the tons of colors to choose from, including neutrals, blues and purples. Testers liked the thicker compression molded foam cushioning, but some found it too firm. “All the cushioning made my foot feel comfortable during casual wear — running errands and such,” reported one tester. He also said they’re “excellent shoes for standing at my standing desk for long periods of time."

ASICS Gel-Cumulus 26 Running Shoe

Gel-Cumulus 26 Running Shoe

In both our walking and running shoe tests, ASICS sneakers continue to be top performers. With ample cushioning, the foam is gel-infused for improved shock absorption. We love the addition of a padded back tab by the heel for extra comfort and ankle stability. Keep in mind this shoe isn’t designed for those who overpronate (meaning the foot rolls inward).

I found this pair just as comfortable out of the box as I did 10,000 steps later. I especially loved the lightweight feel and sleek design that paired beautifully with my activewear outfits, making this a great shoe to wear all day long. Testers especially liked that these shoes were easy to slip on when heading out the door and they felt totally secure on walks. One tester said, "I love the cushioning and look of these sneakers.” Another added, "They are very lightweight given the amount of support they have."

Hoka Clifton 9

Clifton 9

HOKA is synonymous with comfortable cushioning — and for good reason. The brand’s signature cushioning is extremely popular among our testers and for helping to alleviate joint pain for comfortable walking mile after mile. The CMEVA foam and early meta stage rocker design helps propel you forward and maintain a responsive toe-off on walks and runs.

"They felt immediately comfortable from the first wear," said one tester. He added that they "don't flare up my plantar fasciitis and my feet feel actively supported during long periods of exercise." Testers gave this pair perfect scores for comfortable cushioning with many saying this is their new go-to pair. One GH Institute analyst wears this pairs regularly on walks because of how well the shoes cushion and support her feet. “These shoes put a spring in my step,” said one tester who wore this pair on treadmill and road walks.

After interviewing dozens of walkers, HOKA was one of the most popular brands with survey respondents loving the plush cushioning, although some wished the shoes felt more stable and weren't so pricey.

Stay light on your feet with this pair from On Running. You can choose between traditional and stretchy laces to easily slip them on when heading out the door. Designed for soft landings without a bulky foam midsole, this pair uses the brand’s CloudTec cushioning.

I appreciated that this shoe was instantly comfy out of the box. I wore it on long walks around my neighborhood and was impressed how comfortable it was with such a sleek, minimal design. We also tested the waterproof version of this shoe, which testers liked to wear in rainy weather, but sais it wasn’t as breathable. Testers reported that this pair is easy to put on with multiple testers who highlighted the lightweight feel. "I like the flexible design of the sole, [which] allows the shoe to be a bit more responsive to whatever is underfoot," said one tester. He added, "They have a great look to them and feel very sturdy on my foot!" Some testers noted that because they're so flexible, they weren't supportive enough for their needs.

Another tester said, “The shoes are impressively lightweight and I thought they wouldn't offer enough support, but they were surprisingly comfortable.” I personally don't love the appearance of these shoes on my feet, but testers mostly liked their look.

Ryka Womens Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe

Womens Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe

Ryka shoes are designed using exclusively female foot models to ensure a proper fit for women walkers. This pair features a segmented outsole for improved traction on different types of terrain, even gym flooring,. When podiatrists evaluated this shoe, they noted that this pair is great for walking because it offers good mobility with soft cushioning , but one said the foam didn't appear as durable as other styles.

Testers gave this pair perfect scores for cushioning and support. One tester was especially impressed with "how lightweight and breathable these were," while another called them "sleek [and] stylish." One tester said wearing these shoes was akin to "walking on clouds."

New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 V13 Running Shoe

Fresh Foam X 1080 V13 Running Shoe

Avoid a cramped toe box by opting for wide shoes. This New Balance pair is available in wide and extra-wide sizing to prevent any crowding. Plus, they feature a stretchy knit upper that helps avoid pinching around bunions.

I have tested a few different New Balance sneakers and this pair has the thickest cushioning out of the lot. When wearing this pair, I feel like I have a spring in my step, propelling me forward for easy walking. However, I prefer the look of my other sneakers as these look a bit clunky, and several testers agreed.

Giving this pair perfect scores for fit, comfort and cushioning, testers logged over 60 hours walking in these sneakers. "I find myself reaching for this pair over all of my other running and walking shoes whenever I leave my home," reported one tester. "I felt like it gave me a boost on long walks and hill work," said another tester. "My feet felt less tired and it definitely gives a spring to the step." Another called them "very lightweight and breathable."

ALTRA VIA Olympus 2 Road Running Shoe

VIA Olympus 2 Road Running Shoe

If you're a fitness walker who wants to invest in a pair of comfortable shoes, these Altra sneakers are worth checking out. When I evaluated these sneakers in the Lab, I immediately noticed their' unique shape; these shoes are designed to mimic your foot's natural shape to prevent any pinching or crowding in the toe box.

The rocker design is ideal for walkers as it helps propel you forward. This style has thicker, lightweight cushioning compared to Altra's other offerings with the brand's classic zero heel drop design.

"I really like the natural toe-box shape which helps a lot to let my foot relax and push off my toe," said one tester. Another added, "They are extremely comfortable and cushion my feet." She even said, "I do not have pain with them at the end of 12 hours, which can happen with other shoes I wear."

All testers gave high marks for comfort and many noted that the foam felt soft, but some didn't like the appearance. Plus, at 9.6 oz, the shoes is on the heavy side.

Kizik Athens Hands Free Mens or Womens Sneakers

Athens Hands Free Mens or Womens Sneakers

Kizik designs slip-on sneakers that are completely hands-free, ideal for anyone with mobility concerns. They feature the brand's signature flexible silicone cage on the heel that bounces back into place after you step into the shoe. This gender-neutral sneaker is available in a wide range of sizes with five color options.

All testers applauded how easy this pair is to put on and take off. "You really can just jump into them," reported one tester. "It's very convenient for when I realize I only have a minute to run to the school and pick up my daughter." Another tester with Parkinson's told us that Kizik sneakers are easier for him to get on than any of his other shoes.

"They fit me well and are comfortable for long walks," said one tester and another added, "They're also very comfortable, like walking on clouds." Some testers noted that this pair isn't as supportive as their usual sneakers, so they don't recommend wearing these while running.

Brooks Glycerin 21 Neutral Running Shoe

Glycerin 21 Neutral Running Shoe

Anyone with plantar fasciitis knows the difficulty of finding a truly comfortable shoe that supports your arches and reduces heel pain. This pair from Brooks came out on top among our testers with plantar fasciitis for offering excellent arch support and stability. While some Brooks shoes are firmer, this pair has soft, thick cushioning for a cloud-like feel with neutral support.

"The plush cushioning immediately felt comfortable from when I first put them on," said one tester after wearing this pair for over 50 hours. "They haven’t flared up my plantar fasciitis at all, even after many hours of wear and several miles." He even added, "On the days I wear this pair, my feet feel so much more comfortable by the end of the day."

While testers applauded the pair's comfortable feel, they received lower appearance scores and one said they looked "bulky."

Saucony Endorphin Pro 4

Endorphin Pro 4

If you're lacing up your shoes for a 10+ mile walk, make sure you have a pair that'll support your feet and feel responsive after long distances — like this Saucony pick. T he responsive foam and carbon plate in the midsole helps return energy to your feet while propelling you forward , especially important when covering longer distances. This new launch is currently available in only limited sizing and colors with no wide widths.

"I liked the stability of the sneakers and they felt very supportive while running," reported one tester after wearing this pair on both walks and runs. "I also enjoyed the lightweight mesh fabric and how the tongue was attached to the body of the sneaker and wasn't a separate piece."

All testers agreed that this pair had an attractive design with ample cushioning that stayed in good condition after multiple runs. "I love how lightweight the shoes are; they feel like air," said one tester who especially liked wearing this pair when sprinting. "The strong mesh upper allows my feet to breathe easily."

10 Best Walking Shoes For Travel (That Are Actually Cute)

A fter years and years and YEARS of searching for the perfect set of travel shoes to pair with the many different outfits I wore on my adventures, I’m happy to say that I finally did it.

I have found the perfect sets of travel shoes (for both women and men) that don’t sacrifice style for comfort.

For years in my young 20s, I had been pairing ugly running shoes and unsupportive flats with jeans and dresses. If I wanted comfort, I would go for the running shoes. If I wanted to dress up, I went for the flats.

But the running shoes never matched my outfits, and the flats (while cute) were uncomfortable, sweaty, and made my feet smell. TMI but ugh, glad those days are a thing of the past!

Enough was enough–it was finally time to invest my time in researching the best shoe money could buy! After years of trialing different shoes during my travels, I’ve whittled down the list of thousands of potential walking shoes for travel to just a select few.

At this point, I have just about five or six pairs of shoes that I alternate between depending on the season and the occasion. These are my tried and true faves, and I don’t know what I’d do without them!

Need something where you can walk for miles on end exploring the city? I’ve got something cute for you. Need something for those rainy days? I’ve got that too. Something for those dressier days? There’s a travel shoe that’s great for that too!

If you’re ready to level up your travel shoe game, keep reading because these shoes are stylish, functional, comfortable, and won’t let you down when you’re far away from home!

Allbirds Wool Pipers

Available for both men and women

Had Allbirds not come out with a bunch of other cute styles, they would not be on this list and I would not have personally purchased a pair for myself. I’m not the biggest fan of how their original model looked (still looked a whole lot like a running shoe — something I was trying to get away from), but I am a HUGE fan of the Wool Pipers !

They remind me a lot of the classic Keds, with their flat soles that instantly give them ‘casual’ vibes!

The Wool Pipers feature a more streamlined silhouette than the Runners, with a lower profile and less bulk, making them perfect for pairing with a wide range of outfits. You can wear them with crew socks, no-show socks, or no socks — they’ll look great on your feet either way!

Their wide laces also add a touch of sophistication to the design, with flat laces that wrap around the shoe and a subtle Allbirds logo on the tongue. This design element adds a touch of elegance to the shoe, making them perfect for dressing up or down!

In addition to their stylish design, the Pipers are made from the same high-quality, sustainable materials as the Wool Runners, including merino wool and recycled polyester. This means that they are just as comfortable, breathable, and eco-friendly as the Runners, while also being more versatile and stylish.

Pro Tip : If you’re traveling to extremely hot/humid destinations, then the Tree Piper version may be a better fit — they’re made with cooling eucalyptus tree fiber.

Highlights:

  • Soft and cozy, wear-with-everything classic style
  • Made with premium ZQ Merino wool
  • Cushioned midsole gives wear-all-day support
  • Lightweight and packable, so they are perfect for travel

ECCO Soft 7 Sneakers

Have you heard about or seen ECCO Soft 7 Sneakers ? If you’ve read any of my other blog posts, chances are you’ve probably come across them. I love these shoes dearly — both my partner and I have a pair of our own and we never go anywhere without packing them with us!

If you’re not familiar with ECCO, ECCO is a brand that’s loved by nurses and other professionals who need to be on their feet all day. That’s because ECCO shoes are designed for comfort and support, and the Soft 7 Sneakers are no exception. They have incredible arch support and cushioning, making them perfect for walking around all day.

And the best part? They’re super stylish! It’s truly the perfect low-profile, everyday sneaker that exudes a more refined look due to the smooth leather they’re made with. They come in a range of classic earth-toned colors (with white and black being my faves), so you can easily pair them with just about any outfit.

They’re perfect for casual wear (those days when you’re feeling like jeans or leggings), but can also be dressed up with a pair of slacks or a sundress, or a skirt!

When it comes to travel, the ECCO Soft 7 Sneakers are a staple for me. They are going to be a bit heavier in weight compared to the Allbirds above, but the support they give is so worth the extra weight and bulk.

Want a pair that can handle the rain? They also have a waterproof Soft 7 version made with GORE-TEX.

  • Incredible arch support and cushioning
  • Stylish and versatile, with classic colors that can be paired with any outfit
  • Lightweight and packable, making them perfect for travel
  • Loved by professionals who need to be on their feet all day

Vionic Winny Casual Sneaker

Available for women

The Vionic Winny Casual Sneaker is a popular walking shoe that’s easy on the eyes, simple, cute, and has also received the APMA Seal of Acceptance! It’s a quadruple win!

One of the standout features of the Vionic Winny Casual Sneaker is its arch support. The shoe is designed with a contoured footbed that provides excellent arch support, which can help alleviate foot pain and discomfort. This makes the shoe a great choice for people with conditions such as plantar fasciitis or flat feet.

In addition to its foot health benefits, the Vionic Winny Casual Sneaker is also stylish and versatile. It comes in a range of neutral colors and materials, including leather and suede, so it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion!

The shoe also looks sporty without giving “dad shoe” or “running shoe” vibes, so it’ll look great with lots of different outfits. Yes, they’ll look good even with jeans!

It also meets certain safety standards, such as slip resistance, which makes it a good choice for people who need to be extra wary of slip and fall accidents.

HOKA ONE ONE Sneakers – Bondi or Clifton

HOKA ONE ONE shoes are undoubtedly the most “running shoe” looking option on this list, but I couldn’t resist including them because of their exceptional comfort for both walking and running.

Plus, they’re one of the only ones on this list that are APMA Seal Approved , meaning they have been evaluated and found to promote good foot health!

In fact, almost all the active people I’m around own a pair! My mom does her daily walking in these and my partner wears these for work as he’s on his feet all day long. His mom, who’s a nurse, also has a few pairs that she cycles through.

HOKA has built a long-standing reputation in the world of athletic footwear, and it’s no surprise that marathon runners and hikers trust this brand to deliver all-day comfort.

Their shoes feature generous cushioning and a unique midsole geometry that provides a plush, pillowy feel underfoot. This design not only gives you a comfortable experience but also helps to reduce the impact on your joints during high-impact activities like walking, running, and hiking.

HOKA ONE ONE has truly mastered the art of combining performance and comfort, making their shoes a reliable choice for anyone looking to tackle a day of walking or running with ease. Whether you’re hitting the pavement, exploring the trails, or spending a day at Disneyland, HOKA shoes are there to provide that extra cushion and support you need to make the most of your adventures.

Blundstone Boots

Whenever I travel during the months of November to May, Blundstones are likely in the rotation of travel shoes I bring with me. Blundstones = legendary durability and comfort!

Blundstone is a brand that’s been around for over 150 years, and they’re loved worldwide for their dependability and durability. The Blundstone Boots are no exception. They’re made from high-quality materials, including premium leather and durable rubber, making them perfect for any adventure.

Despite being a boot, the Blundstone Boots are actually great for walking. They have a cushioned footbed and a supportive sole, making them comfortable for long walks and even mild hikes. Plus, they’re waterproof, so they’re perfect for rainy days.

Their waterproof feature is the #1 reason why I bought them. In cases of sad, rainy weather, you won’t have to worry about getting your feet wet or ruining your shoes.

I personally hate spending any energy worrying about whether my shoes are getting wet or dirty, and with shoes that are fit for rain and puddles, I can focus all my energy on having fun while I travel!

Personally, I have the Original #510s since I wanted an all-black look to pair with anything and everything I own, but they also have other color combos you can choose from with The Original #500s. You can see their complete collection on REI here!

  • Legendary comfort with lasting durability
  • Made from high-quality materials, including premium leather and durable rubber
  • Waterproof, making them perfect for rainy days
  • Their iconic pull-tabs make putting on and taking off a breeze

Ilse Jacobsen Hornbaek Tulip Slip-On

When I’m feeling like a pop of color, I reach for my adorable yellow Ilse Jacobsen Tulip Slip-Ons!

Ilse Jacobsen is a brand that’s loved by women who prioritize functionality but don’t want to sacrifice style. These flats are made from high-quality leather, which makes them incredibly breathable and comfortable to wear all day long.

Honestly, I’m blown away every time I slip these on — it feels like a soft hug along the top of your foot, while the bottom of your foot is like walking on clouds.

And the best part? There’s just about every color of the rainbow available, so you can find a pair that matches your style perfectly. At the time of writing, there are at least 50 different colors and patterns that these shoes come in!

The upper is made of recycled microfiber with a decorative laser cut pattern attached to their iconic Tulip outsole, made of natural and recycled rubber, with match-colored recycled thread, using no glue.

If you’re not feeling the shape of these shoes, there are also ones that look more like sneakers which also come in a million cute colors!

  • Great for pairing with pants, leggings, and dresses
  • Super breathable so sweat won’t get trapped on your feet
  • Comes in a huge variety of colors and patterns to match your style

Birkenstock Mayari Sandal

Birkenstock is a brand that’s been around for ages and is loved by people worldwide who prioritize function, foot health, and comfort when it comes to shoes. Now, I know when you think of Birkenstock, you might picture those “Jesus” sandals that your dad used to wear, but let me tell you, the Birkenstock Mayari Sandals are way cuter than that!

These sandals are perfect for summer travel because they’re made of high-quality leather that’s both supportive and comfortable. If you’re someone who can’t wear flip-flops due to their lack of support, then you’ll love the Mayari Sandals.

They have a contoured footbed that conforms to the shape of your foot, providing you with the support you need to walk around all day without any discomfort. I have been able to walk 10+ miles on these in one day with no foot pain afterward. They’re incredible and I’m already on my second pair (my first pair lasted me 5 years until the strap broke).

Not only are these sandals functional, but they’re also stylish. The leather straps are delicate and feminine, making them perfect for dressing up or down. You can wear them with a cute sundress or a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.

Overall, the Birkenstock Mayari Sandals are a great choice for anyone who wants a comfortable and supportive sandal that doesn’t sacrifice on style. So, if you’re planning on doing some hot summer travel where a lot of walking is required of you, be sure to pack a pair of these sandals in your suitcase!

  • Great for warm summer days and days at the beach
  • Adjustable buckles on both straps personalize the fit
  • Original Birkenstock footbeds feature soft suede leather topsoles; cork/latex blend midsoles offer pronounced arch support and deep heel cups
  • Footbeds mold and shape to your feet over time
  • Lightweight and flexible EVA outsoles absorb shock

Naot Kayla Wedge Sandal

The Naot Kayla Wedge Sandal is a comfortable and stylish shoe that is perfect for travel, especially on sunny days when you want to wear a sundress! This sandal features a wedge heel that adds a bit of height without sacrificing comfort, making it a great choice for prolonged walking and sightseeing.

The sandal is designed with a contoured footbed that provides excellent arch support and cushioning, which can help alleviate foot pain and discomfort. This makes the shoe a great choice for long walks and extended periods of standing.

In addition to its foot health benefits, the Naot Kayla Wedge Sandal is also stylish and versatile. It comes in a dozen (or more) variations of colors and materials, including leather and suede, so it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

People also love it for its slip-resistant sole, which can help prevent slips and falls on wet or slippery surfaces!

Allbirds Tree Runners

Since I have the Allbirds Wool Pipers, I actually don’t personally own a pair of Tree Runners , but I know tons of friends who swear by these minimalistic walking shoes!

Just like the Pipers, the Tree Runners are made from a unique blend of sustainable materials, including eucalyptus tree fiber and sugarcane, which makes them super soft and breathable. They’re perfect for walking around all day, whether you’re exploring a new city or hiking a trail.

They’re also great for warmer weather, thanks to their lightweight and breathable design. You won’t have to worry about your feet getting sweaty or uncomfortable, even on the hottest days. You can even wear them without socks if you like! And as with all Allbirds, they’re machine washable (which is truly one of the best features about this brand).

If you’re a rather picky person, you’ll love the fact that they come in a huge range of colors that are always rotating across seasons, so you can easily find a color combo that you can pair with just about any outfit. They’re perfect for casual wear, but can also be dressed up with a pair of chinos or a summer dress.

They’re lightweight and packable, so they won’t take up much space in your luggage. And because they’re so comfortable, you can wear them all day without worrying about sore feet.

When it comes to travel, the Allbirds Tree Runners (or the Wool Pipers) are a must-have!

  • Best For: Walking, warmer weather, everyday wear
  • Lightweight, breathable eucalyptus fiber provides next-level comfort
  • Machine-washable materials keep shoes looking like new
  • Lightweight and packable, so they won’t take up much space in your luggage

Allbirds Tree Breezers

I had the chance to try out the Allbirds Tree Breezers recently and I can say they are legit and the perfect pair of flats to add to your travel arsenal! Let me tell you why.

I’m typically not a flats kind of person — my feet are weird and I typically like a lot of support if I’m going to walk a lot. Plus they love to sweat inside of shoes. I thought I was going to give up on flats for the rest of my life til I tried these babies!

First of all, these shoes are incredibly comfortable. They’re made from a unique blend of sustainable materials, including eucalyptus tree fiber and sugarcane, which makes them incredibly soft, bouncy, and breathable. You won’t have to worry about your feet getting sweaty, stinky, or uncomfortable during a long day of exploring. Forget about that nightmare!

Secondly, they’re super lightweight and packable, which makes them perfect for travel. They won’t take up much space in your luggage, and they’re easy to slip on and off at airport security checkpoints. Plus, they come in a range of neutral colors, so they’ll match with just about anything in your travel wardrobe.

But the best part? They’re machine washable! That’s right, you can throw them in the washing machine and they’ll come out looking as good as new. This is a game-changer for travelers who want to pack light and not worry about dirty shoes.

  • Pairs wonderfully with dresses, jeans, or wide-flare pants
  • Silky-smooth material
  • Ribbed collar for a perfect fit
  • Ultra lightweight and packable, so they won’t take up much space in your luggage
