The easternmost country of Scandinavia, sharing a long border with Russia and speaking a language entirely different from Swedes or Norwegians, Finland is renowned as the land of the sauna -- a must-try experience when there. Its capital, Helsinki, is one of the most vibrant cities in the Baltic region, while the city of Rovaniemi -- known for its Santa Claus village and Northern Lights viewing -- makes for a great winter holiday right on the Arctic Circle.

Cities in Finland

Quick! Name a city in Finland. Did you say Helsinki? You’re in good company. When most American travelers think of the major Finland cities, they think of Helsinki, the country’s largest metropolis. We’ll bet our “grillimakkara” that you didn’t say Oulu, or Jyväskylä.

Read on about Finland’s most popular cities to tour:

1. Helsinki

The country’s capital, Helsinki is the common entry point for a Finland tour. This gorgeous seaside city includes around 330 islands off the coast, verdant parks (a third of the city is green!) and an easygoing, laid-back rhythm of life. Regularly scheduled ferries whisk travelers away to the islands throughout Finland tours - Suomenlinna and Pihlajasaari are popular choices - for beach days and even overnight camping.

There’s a reason Helsinki is rated one of the world’s best places to live - there are museums, music performance halls, theater, art and culture, thriving nightlife, amazing architecture, gourmet dining and more. This is one of Europe’s top destinations for festival lovers - no matter what time you visit, you’re likely to run across one featuring art, circus performances, opera, light and more.

One of Europe’s most striking architectural cities, Helsinki - and all of Finland, for that matter - is renowned for a stylish, yet functional design aesthetic. Find everything from Byzantine-Russian and neoclassical in the city’s museums, concert halls and train station. Make sure to include a tour of Helsinki’s Design District in Punavuori and the Design Museum.

There’s a lovely ambience throughout Helsinki, where eastern and western Europe meet. Sit awhile at an outdoor “terrassit” (alfresco bar or cafe) and take in the local personality. Craving fresh air and greenery? Helsinki combines an urban getaway with an easily accessible natural environment. Helsinki tours for active travelers capitalize on the archipelago’s beaches, parks, gardens, forests and, in the winter, frozen seas.

Finland’s favorite small city, Tampere is a low-key, friendly metropolis - and the sauna capital of Finland! Stop by the Rajaportti sauna in Pispala, dating from 1906, or one of more than 20 other saunas in the Tampere region. Other top attractions in Tampere include dining on the famous “black sausage” (look for it at Tampere Market Hall), attending the many festivals and concerts that take place here (in fact, this is the theater capital of Finland) and checking out the numerous quirky museums.

Looking for an outdoor adventure in Tampere? Walk up the Pyynikki ridge - this is the world’s largest gravel ridge formed by the ice age. From the colorful wooden houses of Pispala to two picturesque lakes - Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi - Tampere is a favorite Finland tour stop.

Finland’s most medieval town, Turku was named a European Capital of Culture in 2011. For those seeking Finnish history, visit this modern city full of ancient wonders, including a castle, cathedral and historic market square. The Aura River is the epicenter of Turku - from here, take a cruise to tour the Finland archipelago or nearby Naantali. And just like elsewhere in festival-full Finland, Turku lights up in summer with cultural events that celebrate dance, the middle ages, music, design, art, theater and more.

The northern culture capital of Finland, Oulu is the country’s fourth largest city. Finland cycling tours often include this outdoor- and nature-centric city - it boasts the most extensive bike path network in Finland.

Other outdoor pursuits in Oulu include ferrying to the island of Hailuoto and its impressive sand dunes (or cross by ice road in the winter), wander through lush parks and cross-country ski along well-maintained ski tracks. Then take a load off with some retail therapy at Rotuaari Promenade, featuring Oulu’s best dining and shopping opportunities.

5. Jyväskylä

Architecture tours of Finland can’t miss Jyväskylä - this is the unofficial capital of Alva Aalto and his superb architectural designs. It was right here that the illustrious architect went to school, lived and started his career. Explore it all, from classicism to functionalism to monumentalism.

Outdoor enthusiasts tour Jyväskylä for its serene lakes and bountiful hills, contributing to a love of sports and well-being. Visit Nykänen’s hill, a ski jumping stadium named after Finland’s legendary Matti Nykanen.

Climb the observation tower at Harju ridge for the best views of Jyväskylä. Inside, check out the top museums in Jyväskylä: the Craft Museum, the Alvar Aalto Museum, the National Costume Centre, the Aviation Museum and more.

National Parks in Finland

The Finnish people are an outdoor-loving bunch, making it no surprise that many popular Finland tours include outdoor adventure for all levels and interests. Cool rule: In Finland, there are what is known as “Everyman’s rights,” which means you can explore the parks as you wish as long as you pick up after yourself and are kind to the natural surroundings.

Our picks for the six top Finland national parks (*there are 40 in all!) for active travelers include:

  • Pallas-Yllästunturi -  If you’re looking for lodge-to-lodge hiking and skiing in Finland, look no further than Finland’s first hiking trail. In Pallas-Yllästunturi, you’ll breath Lapland’s freshest air, glimpse the Northern Lights and feel miles from everything - you are! - yet welcomed at comfortable lodgings and surrounded by charming villages.
  • Nuuksio -  One of the closest national parks to Helsinki, Nuuksio is an easy visit on a Finland tour. Hike along well-marked trails through lush forest and past placid lakes, stopping at the nearby Finnish Nature Centre Haltia to learn more about Finland’s natural attractions.
  • U rho Kekkonen National Park -  This 253,800-hectare national park is ensconced in the Saariselkä Wilderness, which extends all the way to the Russian border. The unfettered forest is home to free-range reindeer, bears, eagles and wolverines and offers some of the best off-the-grid hiking in Finland.
  • Oulanka -  One of the most pristine national parks in Finland, Oulanka is a far northern forest full of Scotch pines, silver birches and spruce trees. If you want to venture to the Arctic Circle during your Finland tour, this is the place to be. Shout-out to the innumerable wood ants who reside here and build nests nearly three feet high.
  • Koli -  Considered to be a sacred region of inland, Koli National Park was long feared for its powerful spirits. Hikers from all around the world come to experience one of Finland’s most pristine hiking regions. Koli is home to the longest valley in Finland, famous caves, waterfalls and the picturesque Lake Pielinen.
  • Repovesi -  With is rugged grandeur, Repovesi National Park contains some of Finland’s most pristine wilderness. The suspension bridge at Lapinsalmi is one of the most picturesque locations in Repovesi and a mindblowing challenge for those who can handle the incredible height. Favorite activities within Repovesi include nordic skiing, ice fishing, kayaking, berry picking, mushroom foraging and more.

What to Eat in Finland

The world’s top culinary cities are capitalizing on the locally sourced, sustainable, seasonable ingredient trend, but Finland has long been in the game. The most iconic foods to eat in Finland include meat and vegetables that are sewn into the quilt of the country’s landscape - think reindeer, bear, elk, salmon, arctic char, forest mushrooms, lingonberries, cloudberries and more. Whether you’re sitting down in one of Finland’s renowned gourmet restaurants or strolling through a covered market (kauppahalli), you’re in for a Finnish culinary treat.

Here, our top 10 things to eat on your Finland tour:

Grillimakkara -  Summer in Finland means these big, juicy sausages (there’s just as tasty in the winter months). Pair with mustard and a local brew.

Karjalanpiirakka -  Also known as Karelian pies, these handheld pastries are traditionally filled with potatoes, rice or carrots and spread with egg butter on top.

Kalakukko -  Similar to the karjalanpiirakka, but bigger and stuffed with fish, usually muikku from eastern Finland’s Lake District.

Ruisleipä -  You’ll see this favorite Finnish rye bread everywhere and in many different varieties. The cracker version is called näkkileipä - spread it with butter or cheese for breakfast or an evening snack.

Korvapuusti -  Cinnamon buns, plain and simple. You won’t be able to stop at just one of these favorite Finnish sweets.

Fresh Picked Berries -  Go for a hike in a Finnish forest in the summer and you’ll see legions of bilberry bushes. They’re lovely on their own or baked into a pie. Be on the lookout for other popular Finnish berries: the tart lingonberry and the sour cloudberry, available only for a short period each summer.

Leipajuusto -  Finland’s famous “squeaky cheese” is made from curdled milk, which is set and then either baked or grilled to give it a lovely golden-brown hue. Eat it sliced, even with coffee poured on top(!), with cloudberry jam or in a salad.

Silli ja uudet perunat -  Finland loves its potatoes with herring! Your Finnish culinary tour is sure to include hefty helpings of these new potatoes with fresh herring and chanterelles, or new potatoes with fish roe. Add a little dill, salt and pepper and it’s the perfect summertime Finnish food.

Reindeer -  One of the best meats to sample in Finland, reindeer from the northern province of Lapland is not only delicious and lean, but high in B-12, omega-3, omega-6 - it’s downright healthy! Look for reindeer stew, steak and even pasta dishes with reindeer.

Vispipuur -  Look for this popular Finnish dessert. It’s a sweet concoction of wheat semolina and lingonberries, then whipped to a mousse-like consistency.

How to See the Northern Lights in Finland

It’s actually pretty easy to capture the spectacular Aurora Borealis during your Finland tour - the Northern Lights are visible about 200 nights a year in Lapland, with the best chances of spotting them the farther north you go.

Your Finland tour guide can arrange for a snowy outing - whether snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling or riding in a dog sled - to take advantage of this top natural attraction in Finland. There are even new opportunities to sleep in high style under the Aurora Borealis - your Finnish tour could include a night in a glass-walled luxurious suite, an arctic treehouse or a glass igloo.

Top Souvenirs from Finland

While perhaps not as well known for the Swedish and Danish Scandinavian design of northern Europe, Finland has a unique design aesthetic, lending itself to fun souvenirs to bring home from your Finland tour.

Here, our favorite things to buy for remembering your time traveling in Finland:

1. A kuks a - this traditional Sami drinking cup is made from birch burl. Look for a handcrafted one to support the Sami people.

2. A puukko - the most popular brand of this traditional Finnish belt knife is Marttiini Puuko. It’s a great all-purpose tool for hiking and camping made from birch, oak, ash, horn or bone.

3. Everything berry - stock up on the amazing cloudberry jam, one of Finland’s best foods, although rare enough to be quite pricey, even for a small jar. Look for cloudberry-incensed fruit syrups, bath items, lotions and skin-care products.

4. Finnish liqueurs - there’s a lot of vodka in Finland and it’s not all the varieties you’ve seen before. Try licorice, mint or just run-of-the-mill Finlandia vodka. Another local favorite Finland beverage is Teerenpeli whiskey, locally distilled.

5. Moomin mugs and dishes - Kids throughout Finland adore the Tove Jansson’s Moomin characters (fairytale, forest-living creatures), which adorn dishes found in supermarkets and department stores throughout Finland. This is the perfect Finland souvenir for children.

6. Marimekko items - Sure, you can find Marimekko at Crate & Barrel back home sometimes, but a Marimekko dishtowel, bag, dress, dishes straight from the source does make for a very iconic souvenir of your Finland tour.

7. Sauna supplies - Bring home a Finnish sauna bucket and ladle - the buckets are typically constructed of birch wood, usually with invisible seams and decorative elements.

8. Fazer candies - from milk chocolate to hazelnut, cloudberry to peppermint, Fazer is Finland’s most popular candy. Try the ones filled with Arctic berry liqueurs - yum!

Summer in Finland

It’s not all reindeer and tundra in Finland - in fact, the summers can be quite lovely and warm. What’s more, there are many lakes in Finland - more than 188,000! - which lend themselves nicely to myriad watersports. And with summer daylight lasting so long, there are more than enough hours to take advantage of all the summer activities Finland has to offer. Here’s a taste of what to include in your summertime Finland tour:

1. Boating, Kayaking & More in the Finnish Archipelago : Did you know that 10 percent of Finland is covered in water? When you explore Finland by its lakes, you’ll get a quiet, insider view of the flora and fauna native to the region (including the protected Saimaa seals in their natural habitat).

Off the mainland of Finland, there are 30,000 island making up countless archipelagos, each with its own beauty and natural treasures - from the vast Archipelago National Park south of Turku, to the Ekenäs Archipelago National Park in the Gulf of Finland. The Kvarken Archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a boating favorite in Finland for its smattering of unfettered, rocky and wild islands.

2.   Birdwatching in Finland : Despite all those lakes, sometimes it’s hard to see them through all the trees - Finland is 69 percent covered by forests, making it a birders’ paradise. Some of the top birds to look for in Finland include Blyth’s Reed Warbler, Red-flanked Bluetail, Arctic Warbler, Pine Grosbeak, Great Grey and Snowy Owls, Golden Eagles and many more.

3.   Biking Through Finland : Whether your tastes run toward road biking or mountain biking, cycling in Finland is a popular pasttime. For the most part, cyclists will find the country full of flat or gently rolling terrain through rural farmland and countryside, past placid lakes and through dense forest. The 250-kilometer King’s Road is a popular biking route in Finland - it follows the historic postal route from Helsinki to Turku. Ride along the same path as kings and armies from the 1300s to the present, passing mansion, taverns and inns that were originally built as accommodations along this route.

4. Fishing in Finland : Again, it comes back to all that water - did we mention that 10 percent of Finland is covered by water. Think about it - there are 188,000 lakes, 647 rivers and more than 1,100 kilometers of coastline. Fishing in Finland will result - you hope - in Arctic char, salmon, brown and rainbow trout, Baltic herring, flounders and countless other species. Fly-fishing, trolling, jigging - it’s all possible, and with no fishing license required.

5.   Hiking in Finland : With a lot of unsettled wilderness and a sparce population in those regions, Finland boasts amazing hiking tour opportunities. Trek through 36 national parks, a third as many wilderness area and nine designated “hiking areas.” Your Finland outdoor adventure tour guide can point you toward the best trails for your ability level, as well as accommodations along the way, including lean-tos, rental cabins and campsites.

Finland Winter Travel

1.   Skiing and snowboarding : The snowsports season in lengthy in Finland, from November until about May in the northern sections of the country. The four main ski resorts in Finland are Levi, Yllӓs, Pyhӓ-Luosto and Ruka.

2.  Dog sledding : Inspired by the Iditarod? Your Finnish tour guide can arrange a dog-sledding excursion that’ll have you mushing like a champ.

3. Break the ice : An exciting outdoor adventure in Finland is a ride on the Icebreaker Sampo, a vessel formerly owned by the Finnish government and today used to provide insight into how the ice is moved and broken to allow for transit.

4. Ice fishing : Fish for pike and perch (the national fish of Finland) through a frozen lake. It’s easiest to learn to ice fish as part of a Finland tour because they’ll provide the necessary equipment.

5. Spend the night in an igloo : Or in an ice hotel. While it’s not necessarily a Finland outdoor activity, per se, this unique overnight opportunity takes advantage of the natural environment and celebrates your near-Arctic Circle location.

How to Sauna in Finland

One can’t truly say they’ve been on a Finland tour if they haven’t had a sauna experience while there. After all, between the nearly five million Finns, they own more than two million saunas, so to say these steamy rooms are ubiquitous is an understatement. But, just how does one use a sauna in Finland?

Finnish culture uses the sauna as a place to relax both body and mind - in fact, they think of it not so much as a luxury, but a necessary part of a healthful life. Travelers to Helsinki or elsewhere in Finland should give a wood stove or smoke sauna a try for its intense and purifying dry heat, following it up with a refreshing shower. Then, of course, it’s on to a hefty snack of sausages and local brews.

Similarly to the traditional Onsen experience in Japan , there are some specific steps you should follow in order to truly enjoy an authentic and culturally appropriate suana experience in Finland.

Here’s our cheat sheet to the Finnish sauna custom , so you’re fully prepared to experience this tradition during your Finland tour:

-Start with a shower.

-Enter the sauna room.

-If preferred, use bunches of silver birch (or vihta ) to gently beat your muscles and relax them.

-When the dry heat ( höyry ) becomes too much, have a shower or jump into a cool body of water - during the winter in Finland, some will even roll in the snow or jump through the ice into the lake.

-Indulge in sausages and beer with your fellow sauna-mates.

-Depending on personal sauna preference, repeat this process from 30 minutes up to two hours.

-It’s frowned upon to wear clothing in the steam room, but it’s OK to sit on a small towel. When you’re cooling off, grab a towel - most people do.

-If your Finnish tour includes a visit to a private home or summer residence, you’ll find that the sauna is usually warmed up and prepared as a manner of honoring the guest. Don’t worry, if it’s not your thing, it’s OK to decline. But, really, at least consider it - this is an age-old tradition and iconic experience in Finland.

Finnish Lapland in Winter

8 days | explore finland like never before on this journey through snow-covered lapland..

Travellers enjoy husky ride in the thick of winter in Finland

Lapland, a magical place of pristine Arctic landscapes and snow-dusted woodlands. In this winter wonderland, the cold air is cut only by the sound of rushing rivers and panting huskies as they prepare to rush across this impossibly vast, white wilderness. Strap on your hiking boots and crunch a path through Finland’s spectacular taigas, get cosy with the locals over a glass of salmari and experience the rush of a real dog-sled. From the docks of Helsinki to remote Yllastunturi and Santa’s workshop in Rovaniemi – witness a beautiful part of the world where Christmas feels always close. Learn how people in the North cope with extreme temperatures. You may even find your inner Finn enjoying the solitude while in pure pristine nature.

Trip overview

  • Be pulled across the landscape at high speed on the back of a dog sled. These incredible huskies are doing what they love most – making a lot of noise before rushing along sprawling trails
  • Visit a local Finnish family, who will guide you through their world and lifestyle. You will be shown their skills in reindeer herding with the option to get close and personal with some of the animals on the farm
  • The aurora borealis is the best lightshow on Earth, and this trip is your ticket. Stay up late to see the northern sky dance with green light (subject to weather conditions)
  • Explore Helsinki, then travel on the famous 'Santa Claus Express' overnight train all the way from the cosmopolitan Finnish capital through the frozen Northern wilderness to Rovaniemi
  • Lapland can be extremely cold at this time of year. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions. Please see the Packing section in the Essential Trip Information document for more details. There may be the rare occasion where your leader has to alter the itinerary and activities due to the weather. In this case an alternative will be offered. Please also note that even though it will be cold, not always will there be snow cover, especially on the departures earlier in the winter season. In these cases snow dependent activities will be replaced with suitable alternatives.
  • The Northern Lights (also known as the Aurora Borealis) are a natural display of coloured lights in the night sky of the northern hemisphere. While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, you have a higher chance of seeing them in locations at high latitudes, such as Northern Finland. Keep your fingers crossed for clear skies during your visit.
  • As accommodation on this trip is twin share, single travellers will share a room with another traveller of the same sex. This trip is a great opportunity to get to know other like-minded people, so embrace it while you can. However, if you’d prefer not to share, a single room supplement is available at an additional charge. Please ask your travel consultant for more details. Also, hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together/apart. Please also be aware that many guesthouses offer shared bathrooms rather than en-suite facilities. Rooms in Finland can be small, and at times you may be accommodated a short walk away from the main building.
  • Finland can be an expensive destination in terms of eating out. Your leader will be able to advise on how to save money. In Yllastunturi the only option for dinner will be at the guesthouse we are staying at, or alternatively there are cafes and restaurants in the nearby town (approximately 35 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride away).
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight Under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

Welcome to Helsinki, Finland. If you’re in the city early, head out and discover a wealth of historical sights and gastronomic wonders in Helsinki. Surrounded by the sea, Helsinki is a modern European city that offers an endless array of options. Maybe check out the magnificent Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, Senate Square or catch a performance at the National Theatre. You may want to consider purchasing the Helsinki Card – an economical way to travel on Helsinki City Transport (HKL) services, as well as free admission to the main Helsinki sights and nearly 50 museums. Throughout its 450-year history, the city has often been the buffer between the east and west. This is shown in their cuisine, with a mix of root vegetables, berries and fresh fish. Perhaps head out in the evening to sample some traditional dishes with the other members of your group.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm. Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask the hotel reception where it will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend the welcome meeting. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. Your leader will be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have these ready.

Join your leader on an orientation walk around Helsinki in the morning. Once you get the lay of the land, the rest of the day is completely free for you to explore Helsinki in your own time. A few options to consider during your time here are a visit to the city's cathedral or the Design Museum. Don't miss the historic harbour-side market and market hall for local oddities. If you didn’t have time yesterday make sure you take a short ferry ride to the magnificent Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a World Heritage-listed site that was once an important point of defence for the city and often referred to as the Gibraltar of the North. Later in the evening, you’ll board the famous 'Santa Claus Express', a comfortable overnight train to Rovaniemi (approx 12 hours), known to many as the hometown of Santa Claus. Rovaniemi is a quaint town in Finland’s far north, located just 6 km south of the Arctic Circle.

  • Overnight Train (1 night)
  • Helsinki to Rovaniemi - Santa Claus Express Overnight Train
  • Helsinki – Helsinki Leader led orientation walk
  • Helsinki - Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum - EUR22
  • Helsinki - Design Museum - EUR20
  • Helsinki - Suomenlinna Sea Fortress - EUR7
  • Helsinki - Mannerheim Museum - EUR14

Overnight trains on this trip are usually comfortable double deckers, with 2 berths to a cabin. Please note that cabins are allocated on a mixed gender basis, and depending on the group size some group members will share a cabin with passengers that are not part of our group. All cabins have heating, and there are communal bathrooms at the end of each carriage. Please note that breakfast is not included on arrival tomorrow, and we recommend either buying something in town beforehand or using the restaurant carriage of the train

The train arrives in Rovaniemi early this morning. Continue by private vehicle to a family-run guesthouse deep in the Finnish forest (approximately 3 hours). This location will be your base for the next four nights, situated near Yllästunturi, a popular cross-country and downhill skiing destination. If the skies are clear tonight, why not take a stroll out into the snow and look skywards for the dancing green lights of the Aurora. Far away from the city lights, the guesthouse is an ideal base to see the Northern Lights. The natural display of coloured lights in the night sky are often visible in the high northern hemisphere, and there is even an open-top shelter nearby from which to observe the lights. Grab a hot drink, rug up and head out into the winter wonderland. Alternatively, spend the evening playing your favourite travel games with your fellow group mates.

  • Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Yllästunturi - Northern Light Viewing Opportunity (subject to weather conditions) - Free

In Yllästunturi our guesthouse is situated about 3km from the town centre, in quiet forest surroundings. Breakfast is included and dinner is available for purchase at the hotel's cafeteria (pre-order the day before, subject to minimum numbers). A variety of optional activities are also available to be booked through the accommodation. Alternatively, there are restaurants and supermarkets a short taxi ride or a 35-minute walk away. Don't forget to take your torch/flashlight, as it does get dark early at these latitudes.

On days 3 to 6 at Yllastunturi you will be provided with additional rental package for extreme winter conditions that includes boots, cold outwear, gloves and a pair of woolen socks and balaclavas.

Yllästunturi turns off their street lighting at 10pm from November to mid-February, so the Northern Lights can be seen better. Please note that while there is a good chance of seeing the lights of the aurora this far north, there is no guarantee, as they are a natural phenomenon and weather conditions can affect visibility. There are a number of apps you can download that show current and forecast activity of the aurora around the world. Some of these apps have a function that allow you to be alerted at night when the aurora becomes visible in your current location.

Make sure you rug up for today’s adventures, as you’ll be pulled across the landscape at high speed on the back of a dog sled. These incredible huskies are doing what they love most – making a lot of noise before rushing along sprawling trails. With the wind in your hair, ride through the snow as your new four-legged friends pull you onwards in a truly memorable experience. After the ride warm yourself by an open fire and chow down on sausages and drink some hot berry juice. If you’re lucky, you might get to give the dogs a pet and a cuddle – just be sure to ask the sledmaster first!

  • Yllästunturi - Dog Sledding

In some years snowfall in the north of Finland can come late. In these cases snow based activities aren’t able to be offered, however we work with our local operator to offer you suitable alternatives. The scheduling of the included activities may on each trip, so please consult your tour leader when planning your free time and optional activities.

Your next adventure in Yllästunturi takes you on a visit to a traditional local family, who will guide you through their world and lifestyle. Their reindeer farm has been operating since 1861 and you may have the opportunity to feed and watch these cute animals go about their daily routine. You will be shown their skills in reindeer herding with the option to get close and personal with some of the animals on the farm. Then why not experience a traditional Finnish bath on the farm? Finnish sauna has a millennia old history, and is integral to the Finnish national identity. Locals swear by the cleansing, healing and meditative properties of having a steam and a wash in the sauna. There is also an opportunity to try ice swimming afterwards!

  • Yllästunturi - Reindeer Farm Visit
  • Yllästunturi - Traditional Finnish Smoke Sauna

Please also note that reindeer wander freely around the countryside and only come to the farm to feed. There is a possibility that many of the herd are roaming elsewhere on the day of our visit.

Yllästunturi is home to the largest skiing resort in all Finland, boasting some of the longest downhill skiing runs through its rolling snow parks. Today you’ll have a free day to explore this winter wonderland with plenty of optional activities that your leader or the accommodation owners can help organise for you. You may want to explore the snow-dusted wilderness with a snow-shoeing expedition, or alternatively ice fishing is also an option for anyone who’s after a more relaxing experience, with the added bonus of a self-caught dinner to boot. If it’s very cold (around minus 30 degrees C) try throw boiling water in the air and see it freeze before it hits the ground. It’s called the ‘Mpemba effect’ and it’s free to try.

  • Yllästunturi - Snowshoe Hire - EUR19
  • Yllästunturi - Mpemba Effect - Free
  • Yllästunturi - Meän Elämää (Our Life) Exhibition - Free
  • Yllästunturi - Cross Country Ski Rental - EUR30
  • Yllästunturi - Winter Fatbike Guided Tour from - EUR40

With a free afternoon to explore the city and its surrounds, you have the option of visiting Santa’s workshop, or taking part in the numerous activities that the city has to offer. Maybe go hiking and witness spectacular rapids and aapa mires, or stay in town and visit the Arktikum, the Museum of Finland. It’s a place to learn about the nature and history of the north, where modern technology is being used to have the exhibits come alive. Alternatively you may want to visit the Rovaniemi Art Museum Korundi. Make the most of your time here as tomorrow is your departure day – perhaps meet up with your group afterwards for a farewell dinner.

finland tour dates

Planning a perfect 5 to 7 days in Finland itinerary is a great experience if you’re searching for a European destination off the beaten path from traditional tourist-heavy routes. In unique proximity to Scandinavia, Russia, and the Baltics, Finland is saturated with rich history and culture and “the happiest people” in the world.

From cosmopolitan and sustainable Helsinki to the country’s oldest city, Turku, Finland is a country waiting to be explored with open arms. This itinerary will help you plan an ideal trip to Finland, exploring both cities and nature while discovering unique corners in between.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Finland?

Many potential visitors wonder how many days to spend in Finland in order to do this beautiful Nordic nation justice.

Finland is one of the largest countries in Europe, and with that being considered, there’s a great amount to visit. With that being said, I recommend a minimum of 5 days in Finland; this way you can visit and wander around Helsinki, but also manage to get to another city/town or two.

On top of that, I believe that the ideal length of time to spend in Finland is around 1 week. With 7 full days in Finland, you’ll experience all that you can in 5 days, but also be able to go beyond.

You’ll truly be able to do the country justice, explore a few different regions of the country and go beyond major cities to further off regions, such as Finnish Lapland to perhaps visit a reindeer farm, go dog sledding or see the Northern Lights.

Helsinki Cathedral

Getting To & Around Finland

Getting to finland.

Regarding this particular itinerary, the best and most convenient option will be to first fly into the capital city of Helsinki.

Helsinki Vantaa Airport is the fourth largest Nordic airport by passenger numbers and has frequent routes year-round connecting Finland mainly to Europe but also intercontinental.

Due to the large airport and frequent flights, the Finnish capital is also typically a fairly affordable destination to fly into. You can get from the Helsinki airport to the city center by bus, train or private transfer.

Another unique option for those visiting Finland from neighboring Tallinn, Estonia or Stockholm, Sweden , is to reach Finland by ferry.

There are frequent ferry routes to/from each city and depending on your chosen journey, they can also be more affordable than flight transportation. You can browse ferry schedules here.

Getting Around Finland

When organising your transportation plans for getting around Finland, it’s important to keep in mind the time of year. This itinerary is best suited for the winter months, so unless you’re someone with at least some experience driving in wintery/snowy conditions, I’d recommend against driving.

For those that will be driving, the country is well-prepared for winter weather with cars equipped with the right winter tires so you don’t need to worry about anything out of the ordinary.

If you decide to opt-in to rent a car, I’d suggest only renting it for the time in Rovaniemi. Like most European and Nordic cities in particular, you’ll have an excellent public transportation system at hand to get around with and no necessity to rent a car whilst in the capital city. You can browse Rentalcars.com to compare prices on car hire.

Helsinki is also an incredibly walkable city, with most sights and points of interest in close distance, you’ll find it a joy to walk around the pleasant capital Finnish city.

Furthermore, the other destinations outside of Rovaniemi are easily accessible to Helsinki by bus and train. The last two days of the itinerary are in Finnish Lapland and with such a long drive from southern/central Finland (~10 hours), it would take a day out of your trip to drive.

Rovaniemi is the most “wild” part of the itinerary and having a car would be an advantage (especially if you’re determined to spot the Northern Lights), but it isn’t completely necessary. There are several car rental companies in Rovaniemi, both in the city and at the airport if you’re keen to drive during your time in Lapland.

5 to 7-Day Finland Itinerary

Regardless of how long you have, you’ll find spending time in Finland to be a Nordic treasure. If you have 5 days, you’ll get to know Finland through its capital city, Helsinki, along with other authentic towns and major cities.

For those continuing onwards to a 7-day itinerary, you’ll make your way north to the wild Arctic Lapland region and its capital city of Rovaniemi where you can enjoy either incredible winter activities or, in the summer months, basque in the midnight sun.

Day 1 – Arrive in Helsinki

The first 3 nights of this itinerary are spent in the capital city of Helsinki. Once arriving, you’ll likely first notice the beautiful and diverse architecture and styles painting the capital city.

The city is a unique blend of Finnish, Swedish, and Russian architecture – reflecting the deep history and heritage not just of Helsinki but also of Finland itself.

Helsinki is a fairly small and compact city, which makes it convenient to see most of the main sights during day 1 of your time in Finland. Begin at the Senate Square in the center of the city (Kruununhaka neighborhood) to marvel at the stunning white Helsinki Cathedral along with the National Library of Finland.

A short walk brings you to one of the most unique churches you’ll probably ever visit, the Temppeliaukio Church. Built within a solid rock, the church is a must-visit in Helsinki and for that reason, it’s one of the most popular attractions in Helsinki.

For a taste of some of the best Finnish cuisine in the city along with affordable options, make sure to visit Helsinki Market Square & Old Market Hall. The market square is particularly special if you’re visiting Helsinki during the winter , where you’ll find a joyful Christmas market full of independent stands and vendors.

The Old Market Hall is the oldest market in Finland as well as the perfect spot to enjoy a traditional meal.

Old Market Hall

Where to Stay in Helsinki

Bob W Kluuvi – This hotel is perfect for mid-range visitors. They have a great, central location for exploring the city along with plenty of great rooms to choose from and breakfast available in the mornings.

Hotel Mestari – This luxury hotel is perfect for those looking for a plush stay in the Finnish capital. They have a number of wonderful rooms to choose from, great amenities for guests to enjoy and a fantastic location for seeing all Helsinki has to offer.

The Yard Hostel – Those visiting Finland on a budget will love this cool hostel in the center of Helsinki. They have both private rooms and dorms to choose from along with good self-catering facilities and common areas.

Day 2 –  Helsinki

After a wonderful first day exploring Helsinki and getting acquainted with Finland, a great way to continue your trip is by making a day trip to the Suomenlinna Fortress. This sea fortress also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Suomenlinna Fortress is situated on a group of 8 islands off of Helsinki and demonstrates key elements of Finnish history and independence from both Sweden and Russia.

Suomenlinna is easily reached by a short 15-minute ferry ride (tickets are included within the Helsinki transport system) from Helsinki Market Square.

Finland has a wonderful fashion scene, with both local and high-street shops with a big influence on sustainability. Pohjoisesplanadi, the main shopping street in the heart of Helsinki is about a kilometer long and is the perfect place to take a look at Finnish trends and maybe find a souvenir to bring home.

The Suomenlinna Fortress

Day 3 – Porvoo

On day 3, I suggested making a day trip to the nearby middle-aged town of Porvoo . Porvoo is best reached from Helsinki by bus, with just around an hour’s journey. I recommend booking with Omnibus, as buses are frequent (around every 10 minutes) and the system is reliable. Schedules can be found here. You can also book a guided tour .

Porvoo is a lovely little town giving a completely different feel to Finland than big-city Helsinki. The town is the second oldest in Finland and wandering through the old streets can’t be any more idyllic; especially in the snow during a Finland winter itinerary.

I recommend warming up with a hot chocolate at Petris Chocolate in the town center before heading back to Helsinki.

Town of Porvoo

Day 4 – Turku

After spending 3 nights in Helsinki, make your way to the charming Finnish archipelago city of Turku. Turku is easily reached by train from Helsinki in just under 2 hours and train schedules and booking can be found here .

The city of Turku was founded almost 800 years ago and is a unique must-visit on any visit to Finland. With the Aura River meeting the archipelago as the centerpiece for Turku, you’ll find the city to be an exciting destination full of soul and history as it was once Finland’s capital city before Helsinki.

Stop by the 13th-century Turku Castle to get a better insight into Finnish Heritage in its oldest town as well as the Turku Cathedral, which also happens to be the seat of the Archbishop of Finland.

If you’re visiting in the summer, a great way to enjoy Finland’s bountiful nature is to take a ferry to the Turku Archipelago. Spending the day in the long daylight is best spent wandering the trails, taking a dip in the water, and discovering the archipelago’s 40,000 tiny islands by bicycle.

For a meal with a nice ambiance, the riverside area has wonderful restaurants with gorgeous views no matter the time of the year that you visit.

Turku Castle

Where to Stay in Turku

Centro Hotel Turku – This hotel in central Turku is an excellent choice for those after a mid-range option in this Finnish city. They have myriad great rooms to choose from and a lovely breakfast available in the mornings.

Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone – Located in the center of Turku, this hotel is a great choice for those who want something a bit more high-end while visiting Finland. They have a range of rooms to choose from, fantastic amenities and an on-site restaurant/bar.

Forenom Aparthotel Turku – This aparthotel is great for those who want their own flat but don’t want to sacrifice the convenience of a traditional hotel. There are a range of apartments on offer and they also have a great, central location.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Turku hotels!

Day 5 – Tampere

On your 5th day in Finland, a quick hour-and-a-half train from Turku will bring you on a day trip to the quirky city of Tampere. Tampere is the second biggest city in Finland with a lot to offer but is regularly missed by tourists, making it a great destination for any trip to Finland off the beaten path.

Tampere is the sauna capital of Finland, with over 50 public Finnish saunas waiting for you to relax and rejuvenate in the Finnish style. If you’re looking to tick visiting Finland’s oldest sauna off of your travel list, head to Rajaportti Sauna to experience a sauna heated by wood in the most traditional method.

The city is full of unique and exciting museums such as the Moomin Museum, the quintessential destination for any lover of the Moomin cartoon world. Another great museum option in Tampere for a particular perspective on Finnish culture and social history is Werstas – The Finnish Labour Museum

During your time in Tampere, make sure not to miss the largest Market Hall in all of the Nordics , Tampere Market Hall. This is the perfect destination to sample quintessential Finnish delicacies in a pleasant spot with friendly locals and authentic Finnish food.

If you’re spending just 5 days on you trip, this is the last day of your Finland trip. There is an airport in Tampere with a handful of European connections, making it a convenient ending if you can leave from Tampere. Otherwise, take the train back to Helsinki to continue onward.

For those continuing onward to the city of Rovaniemi in Lapland, the best transportation options from Tampere are to either return to Helsinki to fly to Rovaniemi or take an overnight train/bus from Tampere.

Day 6 – Rovaniemi, Lapland

The last two days of your Finland travel itinerary will be spent in Finland’s largest region, enchanting and magical Lapland.

While also an ideal destination for the summer months because of the incredible nature and lush boreal forests of the northern Finnish region, it’s hard to find any travel destination more perfect in winter than Lapland.

When planning accommodation, the costs of Lapland nature-surrounded hotels are much higher than in the center of Rovaniemi, it enhances the fairytale Lapland experience if you can afford the cost.

The city of Rovaniemi is quite small in comparison to most other Nordic and Finnish cities, but it feels like an entirely different world in itself. To learn more about Arctic and Lappish culture, science, and history, head to the Arktikum Museum for a perfect taster to educate you for the rest of your time in Lapland.

Rovaniemi is the main hub for most activities in the area and they’re plentiful. Whether you’re interested in taking a cosy reindeer sleigh ride in the Arctic forest or an Aurora Borealis expedition with a cup of hot chocolate, there’s something for everyone.

The majority of tour and activity groups leave from Rovaniemi with pick-up from surrounding hotels, making it an effortless trip if you decide not to rent a car to explore Rovaniemi, Lapland.

If you’re visiting Lapland and following this itinerary in the summertime, it’s a completely different atmosphere but still incredibly special in its own right. From long days spent exploring Lapland’s wildly deep nature and forests to midnight-sun bonfire nights, summer in Lapland is truly special as well.

Where to Stay in Rovaniemi

Arctic Light Hotel – This modern hotel in Rovaniemi, this is a great base for exploring Lapland. There are several chic rooms to choose from, an airport shuttle, free parking and a superb breakfast.

Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle – The perfect arctic escape, the glass igloos located outside of Rovaniemi are excellent for a unique visit. They have several different pods on offer, a great restaurant, room service and other amenities.

Hostel Cafe Koti – A good budget option in Rovaniemi, this hip hostel has both dorms and private rooms, a bar and cafe on site, a sauna and good self-catering facilities.

Day 7 – Santa Claus Village

One of the most popular attractions when visiting Rovaniemi, Lapland is the magnificent world of Santa Claus Village.

Santa Claus Village is just about a 10-minute drive (or 20-minute bus ride) outside of Rovaniemi city center and is a must-visit magical stop while in Rovaniemi, for both adults and children. You can also take a guided tour  from Rovaniemi.

The village is a large wonderland, full of activities from ice skating and sledding to visits at the husky park and postcards and a meeting with Santa at Santa’s workshop. You’ll find conveniently placed fire pits throughout the village and the village’s forest area to warm up if you decide to walk among the snow-dressed Arctic trees.

The official boundaries of the Arctic Circle run through Santa’s Village and even though it’s just a line, it’s truly thrilling to pass back and forth through the Arctic Circle!

Food options are plentiful in the village no matter your budget or preferences; from cafeteria-style food to classic Lappish food (I recommend the open-fire cooked salmon!) in a traditional hut.

With so much joy and winter wonderland from just around every corner, it’s easy to spend a long day at Santa’s Village. It’s also safe to say that there’s no better send-off from a trip to Finland than heading to the snowy paradise of your childhood dreams.

If you’re visiting in the winter, you may be able to find a return flight from Rovaniemi depending on the city, but otherwise, return to Helsinki to wrap up a marvelous week in Finland.

Have More Time?

In the case that you are drawn to the Lapland region and would like to explore further, I highly suggest heading further north to experience the region on a deeper level in the resort town of Levi.

In Levi, you can hit the slopes and ski on Finland’s biggest ski slopes, search further for the Northern Lights with a higher chance of seeing them, and find yourself in further bewilderment by Finland’s stunning natural beauty.

On top of that, if you want to continue your trip and are looking to go beyond Finland, Swedish Lapland is just over the border with more outdoor adventures waiting for you.

Finnish Lapland is a lot more “developed” and touristy in comparison with Swedish Lapland, so if you’re interested in experiencing more of a local experience in Lapland, Swedish Lapland is a great way to continue your trip.

Sunrise in Levi

A Finland trip undoubtedly has something for all kinds of travelers, whether you’re a city-seeker or someone happiest among nature. With this Finland itinerary, you’ll see all aspects of Finland, giving the perfect representation of this dynamically beautiful, and kind country.

How Long Does it Take to Travel Around Scandinavia?

finland tour dates

Where is the Best Place to Visit in Finland?

Interested in other nordic destinations.

We can take you anywhere in Scandinavia!

Our escorted journeys allow travelers to explore Scandinavian destinations in the company of a very experienced Tour Director and a small group of fellow travelers. Group sizes are limited to 12 travelers and a limited number of departure dates are offered for each journey throughout the year. The Tour Director accompanies the group from the beginning to the end of the journey and often a private driver and vehicle (luxury mini coach) are also employed for maximum comfort. Additionally, we count on the expertise of several local guides at each of the destinations visited, further enhancing the experience. Our escorted journeys typically include most dinners, in order to better showcase local cuisines, and allow for the exploration of more remote destinations. This option is ideal for travelers who enjoy traveling in the most worry-free manner possible while discovering destinations in the company of others, making new friends along the way.

Our independent journeys allow travelers to explore Scandinavian destinations with journeys offering a great balance between pre-arranged activities and free time to explore. When implementing one of our independent journeys for you, we handle all the logistics involved, including: hotels, airport transfers, transportation from city to city and all guided activities and excursions. You will not be with a Tour Director throughout the journey, but you will enjoy a number of sightseeing experiences led by experienced local guides. We can work with your desired dates, provided that availability exists at the many services involved in your independent journey. This option is ideal for travelers who enjoy traveling independently and with a higher degree of flexibility to explore each location on their own.

Technically, Scandinavia refers primarily to Norway, Denmark and Sweden. When thinking of Nordic Countries, add to the list Finland and Iceland as well. Discover Scandinavia Tours can take you to any location in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. Currently we also offer extensions in Estonia, which is of particularly convenient access when visiting Finland, given that Tallinn – Estonia’s beautiful capital – can be reached by a short ferry ride from Helsinki.

Simple: just call us at 800-936-2814 and talk to one of our Scandinavia specialists. Alternatively, you can email us at [email protected]

If you are interested in a group tour, you can book any departure as long as there are seats available (but remember: we have a maximum of 12 seats per departure, so booking early is recommendable). If you want a private tour, you can book as far as 2 years in advance. For last-minute travelers, please keep in mind that we need a minimum of 30 days to implement a private program.

With our group tours of Scandinavia you can choose from a number of fixed departures throughout the year. If you need more flexible dates, our private tours allow us to work with any dates you have in mind, provided that we find adequate availability at all hotels and other services included in your particular program.

Yes, we do. Please contact us for details.

You will find our cancellation policy, along with all our terms and conditions, RIGHT HERE.

In short, you can typically view the Northern Lights between September and March. But if you really want a memorable Northern Lights vacation, we created an entire blog post dedicated to this question, which you can read RIGHT HERE.

You most certainly can! Just email us ( [email protected] ) or call us ( 800-936-2814 ) and we will start your dream Scandinavian vacation with a free consultation.

Green Lung announce European leg of Heathen Neverland tour, share additional UK and Ireland dates

Green Lung will be co-headlining shows with Unto Others across Europe in 2025

Green Lung

Green Lung have announced the European leg of their 2025 Heathen Neverland tour.

The rising stoner metallers will be headlining their UK trek, and performing as co-headliners with Unto Others across mainland Europe and Ireland. Performing as special guests will be heavy/doom metal squad Satan's Satyrs.

Speaking of the news, frontman Tom Templar says, "We are thrilled to be embarking on our biggest tour yet, and headlining club shows in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Portugal, Spain and Italy for the first time. We’re honoured to be sharing the stage with Unto Others and Satan’s Satyrs, two bands we’ve been fans of for a long time. Europe, come join our rites!".

Green Lung released their latest folklore-infused album, This Heathen Land , late last year to critical acclaim, landing at the 8th position in Metal Hammer's album of the year list. In a review, Hammer journalist Chris Chantler gave it a glowing four-star review , writing: “The synths are a consistent joy, while the effervescent twin guitars are discreetly heroic – the organ/axe trade-offs on rollicking highlight Hunters In The Sky are a special treat.

“Tom Templar’s eccentric pipes walk a fine line between atmospheric storyteller and hard rock party-starter, his multi-tracked harmonies sometimes beguiling – as on Song Of The Stones, the LP’s only pure ritualistic folk tune – sometimes alarming.

“Most importantly, the sheer quality of songwriting edges ever upwards.”

Tickets for the new shows will be available at 9am on September 4 from  greenlung.co.uk .
