ladies baloise tour zwevegem

Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich) took the first stage of the Baloise Ladies Tour after a fast prologue performance

Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich) took the prologue victory at the Baloise Ladies Tour on Wednesday evening in the Netherlands. Kool narrowly beat Lucinda Brand ( Lidl-Trek ) and Jenny Rissveds  ( Coop-Hitec Products ) to take the lead in the four day stage race.

The race began with a short 2.6km prologue around the Dutch beach town of Vlissingen. While the evening sun washed the riders in golden light over the North Sea, the wind was ripping across the coast and was the main challenge of the day.

"It's super nice because I know this course like the back of my hand - I often come here on vacation," Kool said. "It was really a goal to be there today. There are still very nice stages to come, but I want to defend that leader's jersey to the end."

The stage race has gathered talent from across the Women’s WorldTour, with high-profile riders coming to the stage race in the run into the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. While SD Worx, the big heavyweights of the women’s cycling season thus far, are not in attendance. However, Lidl-Trek, dsm-firmenich, Movistar and Jumbo-Visma all made the start line.

Chief among the favourites were Lucinda Brand, Anna Henderson (Jumbo-Visma), Emma Norsgaard (Movistar) and Charlotte Kool. The short time trial to start the week was the first opportunity for these riders to begin to sort out their hierarchy and see how their form stacked up against the rest.

Kool, one of the best sprinters in the Women’s WorldTour blitzed the 2.6km course and took the win by less than a second ahead of Brand, who came in second, and three seconds ahead of Swedish time trial champion Rissveds who is known for her long career on the mountain bike.

Brand, who is one of the worlds best cyclo-cross riders, is deep into her road programme this summer, while Rissveds is back on the road in the run up to her first Tour de France Femmes during the summer break in the UCI World Cup season.

Norsgaard, Henderson, and Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich) were other notables in the top 10, while other, less heralded riders made impressions like Carlijn Achtereekte (Jumbo-Visma) in seventh and Fanziska Brauße (Ceratizit-WNT) who finished eighth.

The Baloise Ladies Tour returns to Belgium on Thursday for a 119km stage around Zwevegem.
