There is no age limit for fun and adventure!

The Original Canopy Tour is a three-hour experience, and The Ultimate Canopy Tour is three hours and 45 minutes. This time frame includes your 15-minute check-in, during which time you will meet your small group, be introduced to your guides, get all your safety equipment on, and have the chance to use the last flushing toilet. Please be at our base on time or slightly earlier for your check-in!

Everyone checks in at our base at 147 Fairy Springs Road. There is parking at our base, which is monitored by our team. The amazing Customer Experience Team will greet you when you enter the front doors and gather any last bits and pieces we may need. This is your last flushing toilet, so make the most of it!

During check-in, we discretely weigh each guest to ensure everyone is within our weight limit. Please do not be offended; your safety is our absolute priority, and it is imperative that we know our guests are safe when with us. We have a 120kg weight limit for both experiences.

While at the base, you will meet the others in your small group and your passionate guides who will be with you throughout the experience. We’ll chat about everything you need to know and get everyone geared up in their safety equipment.

We then jump in our Canopy Tours vans and drive you 10 minutes (13 km) out to Okoheriki (our forest) to start your adventure within one of New Zealand’s most incredible forests!

After your Canopy Tours experience, your guides will edit and download your photos onto our website. They take a day or two to be reachable. We will send you an email within three days of your tour with your photo link in there. You then have three weeks to download your photos.  If you have any trouble getting your photos, please contact us to help you!

We highly recommended pre-booking your zip line adventure to avoid disappointment as spaces are limited. Weekends, school holidays and public holidays are our busiest times. But even if it is last minute in a busy period please check for availability online here.

Yes. Rotorua Canopy Tours is passionate about customer experience so, we guarantee all of our experiences giving you confidence to book. If you aren’t 100% satisfied, you can either pay what you think it’s worth, or get a full refund. The details are here. No one else in tourism is doing this.

Multiple tours run every day. Click here to see tour times and availability.

The forest is usually a few degrees colder than it is in Rotorua and can get quite frosty in the winter, we recommend a warm pair of socks and one more layer than what you are comfortable in outside. High quality wet weather gear and an extra warm outer layer can be supplied. Closed toe footwear is a must all year round.

Yes, yes yes!! Please do not forget to bring your camera! We encourage you to take as many photos of this amazing adventure as you can.

Bringing your camera is at your own risk, we recommend ensuring that your camera has a strap that you can attach to yourself or can be kept in a zip pocket. If you have a GoPro, bring it! You will get some amazing footage, we recommend a helmet mount/ head strap, wrist mount or selfie stick. Don’t forget to charge your batteries before coming on tour.

If you don’t have your own camera you can hire a GoPro to take on your tour. Your guides will also take a few photos of you while on tour, we will email these to you free of charge!

Canopy zip line tours run in all-weather including in the rain and most of our customers who have experienced the forest say it is even more beautiful in the rain! While you are under the trees the canopy acts like a big umbrella. We will also kit you out in our amazing wet weather gear that will keep you dry and warm throughout the tour.

Fair question – Winter in a native forest is an incredible time. The smell of nature clings the air, the damp forest also sparkles with greens and the cooler fresher air makes you wonder when the last time you felt this alive was (all our photos on this website were taken in the middle of winter).

We also understand our guests do not want to get cold so we have invested in the best outdoor clothing money can buy – it keeps you dry, warm and toasty so you can lose yourself in the moment rather than worry about chattering teeth. But we do advise you bring thick socks and extra layers – as you can never be too warm.

Canopy Tour Age Limit

Does anyone know how old do you have to be to do the Canopy tour? The ship says 18, but the websites I have seen indicated younger. Is 12 too young?

I take it this is on the RCCL website? I wonder if they are talking about the age limit to take the excursion on your own. I am trying to find out information for my upcoming Carnival cruise. So far, I've only seen a weight limit. My boys are 15 and 17, so I hope we'll be able to take this tour. Maybe you can call RCCL and speak to an excursion representative to get this straightened out. You wouldn't want to buy the tickets and then not be able to go. Good luck. Please post when you find out more information.

BlueSkiesGreenTrees

My daughter who's 15 is very interested in this tour. I called RCCL and the rep told me that the actual age limit is 12 - there is a price on the top of the shore ex page of $89 adult and $89 child. It really looks fun.

We also noticed that the age limit on the canopy tour in Belize is 8, but it only has 5 traverses, and this one seems to have nine. (The shore ex page for the Montego Bay Canopy tour also says 18.)

Hope the rep is right because we would really like to take this tour - they should update the web site. Has anyone who has done this tour know for sure?

hadleys9538

We're booked through Los Veranos, and my 8-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son are both going. If you book through RCCL, it not only costs more, but the minimum age is 18. (The funny thing is that their operator's minimum age is actually 8 as well, so it is RCCL mandating the 18-year age limit).

Unfortunately, we found that most of the excursions we were interested in through RCCL had a very high minimum age, so we went ahead and booked everything on our own. Our kids are both fearless (unlike their mother:eek:) and they want some adventure in their vacation.

I have read that it is very safe. I wouldn't let them go otherwise.

Hadleys9538 -

How did you find Los Veranos? Other posts have said that you can't book this tour independently, only through the cruise ship. Do you have a web site or e-mail for them - I would really appreciate it. We are worried about the difference in age between the shore ex page and what the rep said. Thanks for your help.

I contacted the canopy tour operator through their website and asked about the age limit. I received the following response:

Thanks for choosing The Original Canopy Tour.

We talked to the cruise lines and they are in the process of revising the age limit policy, but it is going to take about a month. In the mean time we are victims of our own success… The tour has been so successful, the cruise lines buy out the day in advance so we are closed to local traffic on cruise days…so unfortunately the only way to take The Original Canopy Tour when your cruise ship is in port is to buy it from them .

Passengers are very important to the cruise lines and I’m sure they would be motivated to fix this faster given the proper motivation… but our bread is buttered on that side …so suggestions on how to affect such a move must rest with your own imagination.

We are expanding rapidly… everywhere it seems, If you ever find yourselves in an area where one of our tours is… please give us the chance to make this up to you. There are a number of ways we can do this … all of them good ;)

L et us know your cruise date and cruise line and we’ll let you know if there is any change before you get there.

Best regards,

The Original Canopy Tour

So, we have bought tickets through cruise personalizer on the Princess website and will hope for the best for our teens 13, 14, and 16. We will try the "Don't ask, don't tell" philosophy and see what happens.

We were just on the RCCL Mariner and our table mates had four boys 11-14. They were able to book the Canopy tour by signing a waiver form. I had already booked horseback riding and the Falls and River, so we will do the canopy in Belize or Kauai.

How did you contact Los Veranos? We went on the Canopy Tour last April with my kids 12 & 15 and we LOVED it. It was the greatest tour we have ever taken and it IS very safe. We not once felt unsafe. We will be there next April on RCCL and since they have the 18 age restriction we can't go again. Why the change....go figure????

I contacted RCI about the age limit and the email response was that once the age limit isposted there are NO waivers that may be signed to allowyounger passengers to participate. They also stated that the age/height/weight restrictions are imposed by the tour groups themselves and not RCI--HA! I find that very interesting because everyone knows the canopy tour group doesn't have an age limit of 18! RCI is not very bright in this area. Other cruiselines allow younger passengers to do this tour and as we all know--every time you take a tour you sign a waiver of some sort so what is the big deal?

As I mentioned above, our tablesmates on the RCCL Mariner on the 5/8/05 sailing who were ages 11, 12, and 14 did the Canopy tour in Ocho Rios. Their mother signed a waiver at the excursion desk on the ship. Perhaps once on the ship the rules are different?

  • 1 month later...

We just returned from Montego Bay on the Western Caribbean route of the Caribbean Princess. We booked the canopy tour for our teens ages 12, 14, and 16 over the internet prior to our cruise--even though the tour book we received listed a minimum age of 18 for this tour. The tour was sold out prior to sailing, so if we had waited to ask and book on the ship, our kids and their Dads would have missed this opportunity. The tickets have 10 years of age as the minimum age for this excursion on Princess--so all worked out well!

By the way, they all loved the tour.

Does anyone know if there have been any changes in this policy. Is this still restircted to the ship's shore excursion? We're going on RCL in December. What is the web site for this tour operator if someone has it handy. Otherwise I guess I can get it on Google. Thanks.

Hello Lisa and others,

Speaking from the perspective of the first US based company to install canopy / zip line tours in the US , the age limit is driven by a couple of factors.

1. In most cases the person can be a minor if their parent or guardian is present with them on the trip and can sign the minors waiver form.

2. The minor (in most cases) is at least 80 pounds.

3. Has a level of maturity that would allow them to handle instructions and be at height off the ground.

4. Has a fair to good level of focus. There will be times of rest and relaxation on the tours while at height. During this time, information can be gained about the local area and interaction with other tour participants.

5. Able to reach the various safety clip in points. All most all the time the zip line / canopy tour guides will do the attachment points but it helps in the participant is able to climb around and reach hand holds and cables during the tour.

6. Type of harness. Not all harnesses are designed for smaller children. The harnesses we use will usually fit sizes from 60 pounds up to 260 pounds and are rated to 7,000 pounds. Smaller or larger sizes are available.

The zip lines themselves can be very long and designed to operate within a minimum and maximum weight range. The lightest weight range course that I am aware of is about 54 pounds. This is the Just Live ( www.justlive.org ) Canopy Tour on the island of Kauai Hawaii .

Our company, Experience Based Learning (EBL) ( www.ebl.org ) has installed the first 5 tours on US soil and consulted on all 7 currently operational on US soil. My personal favorites are the Just Live tour and another in Ketchikan , Alaska , Southeast Exposure ( www.southeastexposure.com )

Both programs are family friendly, offer tours for the cruise ship industry, and have their staff professionally trained each year by EBL instructors.

We will soon have our newest tour operational in Juneau Alaska by mid April of 2006; Alaska Zipline Adventures ( www.alaskazip.com )

Lastly, keep in mind that not all zip line tours are the same. You will have canopy / tree top tours and you will have what we coined the phrase for of "zero elevation" tours. While a canopy zip line tour is just that, in the trees amongst the canopy, zero elevation tours start and finish at ground level. These tours are designed to zip you over natural features, off cliffs, and/or down stream beds.

Some Safety Tips!

Ladies, braid and tuck your hair inside your helmet or shirt. While EBL installed courses have now seen over 100,000 zippers and we are not aware of anyone getting their hair caught in the pulley, it is a machine with rolling wheels. Any piece of hair, clothing, necklace, jacket hood draw string, or other items should be secured and kept away from the pulley.

Don’t' grab the cable! On the US tours we have installed, the systems use a passive breaking system. This means that you don't have to manage your own speed and are safer by the design of the tour. Thus, your trained guides will attach you to the pulley at just about an arm's reach away form the cable. One could still reach the cable, but you have no need, so just keep your hands off the cable.

Stay upright! Hanging up side down creates safety concerns for the tour guides. One, it puts your feet over your head and you run the risk of passing out. It also puts your shoes and shoelaces up by the pulley and they could get caught in the pulley wheels. think about hanging up side down from your feet for about 10 minutes while a guide comes out to assist you down. Also, outside of a full body harness, no manufacture that we are aware of endorses a seat harness to be used while up side down. Over all, it is just considered poor practice and should be avoided.

Eat and Drinks! You should eat and drink something about two hours before the tour but allow yourself 30 minutes without food or water just before the tour. You don't want to show up to a 2-3 hour tour and get hungry along the way. It is also hard to zip around with a loose water bottle in your hands. Good tours will have water station breaks incorporated within the tour itself. If you have a big meal just minutes before the tour, you may feel bloated and uncomfortable as you digest your most recent meal. If you have low blood sugar, pack a candy or energy bar for some fast energy during your trip.

Cameras! Everyone wants to remember their trip. If you bring a camera, also bring the protect case and a means to secure it to your person while you have your hands busy holding onto your safety tethers. Dropping you $300 digital camera is never fun and often, you may not be in a position to recover it. If you do bring a digital camera, download all the other pictures from your trip to your laptop or Internet source before your tour. That way if you loose your camera, you don't also loose all your other vacation photos as well

If we can be of any further help, please feel free to contact our office. If you would like to view samples of our work or see tours that EBL has installed or consulted with, please visit our zip line canopy tour samples page at: http://www.zipdesigns.org/sample.html

Happy zipping!

goingtocruise

We sailed on the Voyager of the Seas in December 2005. We were worried about the age requirement also. Tried everything to book this tour elsewhere. Every day I went to the shore excursion booking site and tried to book. Our names came up and had an age restriction sign next to both boys (13 & 15) One day, the age restriction vanished and I booked (thinking maybe they changed the age limit...they hadn't). When our tickets came to our room on the ship, they had "No one under 18". I went to the shore excursion desk, they confirmed the kids could NOT go. Asked a few more questions, like do RCCL people accompany the group, check ID's, etc. Decided to take our chances and show up on the dock. There were no questions asked and when we combined with the group from the Carnival ship, there were kids as young as 10. If you can book this and get off the ship with the tickets in your hand, you should be OK since the tour companys age limit is not 18. Worse case, we would have lost our money if we couldn't go. I felt it was worth it since we wanted to do this so bad. They did have different size harnesses for kids. They would have to, because some women are small enough to fit in the kids size.

Our Canopy Tour is a guided zipline tour where participants travel from tree platform to tree platform across seven ziplines. Our course features ziplines, aerial bridges, spiral staircases, a floating staircase and a rappel to bring you back to the ground after about 2.5 hours in the air!

Participants must be 10 years of age or older. The weight requirement is between 70 and 250 pounds. This restriction primarily has to do with speed, as participants under 70 lbs won’t make it all the way across each zip, and customers over 250 will build up extra momentum.

The tour takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete, But before zipping, we’ll teach you everything you need to know in “ground school.” This takes about 30 minutes, so plan to spend about 3 hours with us.

Yes, otherwise we can’t guarantee a place for you on a tour! You can make reservations here or call us at 440-707-2044 .

Cancellations made at least 7 days in advance of a tour date will receive a refund, less a $10 per person cancellation fee. Cancellations made less than 7 days in advance will not receive a refund.

We can reschedule your tour one time at least 2 days in advance of your scheduled tour date.

We ask participants to arrive 30 minutes prior to your tour time to ensure time for checking in, reading and signing waivers, and using the restroom. We will not ask other guests on a tour to wait for a late arrival, so if there are open spots on another tour later in the day, we may be able to accommodate you.

If Common Ground is forced to cancel a tour due to weather or other unforeseeable conditions, we will provide a choice between rescheduling for another available time, a gift card to use for a future date, or a refund.

Reservations and gift cards are transferable, so you may allow another individual to participate in your place.

No refunds will be issued if participants: -Arrive late or don’t show up for your scheduled adventure. -Are denied access for failure to meet screening or participation requirements (see FAQs). -Choose to depart the course early. -Are removed from the course for their inability to follow instructions or participate safely. -Cancel a reservation less than a week in advance

Our trained and professionally verified guides will be with you the entire time, making sure that you remain properly geared-up and that you remain securely tethered for the whole tour!

It’s a good thing to have a healthy respect for heights! Our guides are experienced in coaching cautious guests through the course and some of our favorite tours have been spent helping people overcome their fears. Also, remember that if you decide it’s not for you, we can get you back to the ground anywhere on our course!

Yes, we have trails on the ground that lead to our tree platforms, and we’re happy to provide you with a map at our Welcome Center desk.

Dress for the weather! That might mean a raincoat, winter jacket, or shorts and a t-shirt. Remember that you’ll be wearing a full-body harness. Harness webbing can be uncomfortable against bare skin, so avoid short shorts or tank tops. Also, wear close-toed, close-heeled shoes, such as tennis shoes. You’ll be on your feet for about 3.5 hours, so comfort and support is key!

You can bring a GoPro along with a strap to attach it securely to the helmet you will be wearing.

We invite you to unplug for a few hours and leave your phone in the Welcome Center or in your car. We’ve had participants lose phones on tour, slipping out of pockets. It really is refreshing to connect with your friends and loved ones without texts and notifications distracting you, and to take in the beauty of the forest, without filters or emojis! And if you’re thinking about capturing your experience in photos, your guides will be taking photos throughout the tour, so there’s no need to risk dropping your smartphone into a river!

Yes! We offer 10% off for groups of 8 or more. Since our cap on tour size is 8, special arrangements need to be made to accommodate large groups. Give us a call at 440-707-2044.

Yes, children ages 10-15 must be accompanied by an adult.

Your hard-working guides would certainly appreciate it, so feel free to bring some cash to tip them after the tour! The industry standard is 10%.

The tour requires light-to-moderate physical activity, including climbing stairs, crossing bridges, and walking over uneven terrain. If you have further questions, we’re happy to talk in detail about some of the physical requirements of the tour. If you are unsure whether you are able to participate, please consult a doctor.

There are inherent risks in everything we do, from driving a car to ziplining. Our course was built according to industry standards developed by the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and is inspected regularly by industry professionals. All guides have been trained and then verified through Project Adventure along ACCT guidelines.

We are rain or shine! Our canopy helps form a leaf umbrella over us that keeps off most of the rain, and on a hot day it can really help us cool off. Of course, we cannot zip with lightning storms nearby, high winds, or monsoon-level rain. If any weather requires us to cancel your tour, we will provide you with a raincheck to join us on a nicer day!

Frequently Asked QUESTIONS

Can i purchase tour pictures or videos.

Not all tours have this service, ask at the office before your tour. Please be aware that if you do not purchase the video or photos immediately after the tour, we delete them.

How many other people will be on the [monkey, crocodile, zipline, kayaking, Tortuga tour, etc.] tour with us?

The Monkey Mangrove , Crocodile , Zipline Canopy , Kayaking and Tortuga Island tours are all shared tours and the number of people may vary, but the service will always be personalized.

Will I be able to fit in the zipline canopy safety harness?

See maximum weight answer.

What is the maximum weight for the zipline tour?

There is no specific weight limit on the zipline canopy tours , our reference is 260 pounds, however, this depends on the harness size. The safety harness has a maximum circumference of 42” at the natural waistline (not at the hips, which is where we typically measure our jeans, and thus, tend to think that is our waistline). You find the natural waist by standing up straight and then bending to the left or the right until there’s a dip in your side. That dip is the natural waist - it’s typically around 1-2 inches above the belly button. If you measure 39” or less there, you will be fine to do the zipline.

What is the minimum age for kids to do Canopy tour?

Children must be 6 years of age or older to do the Los Sueños Canopy Zipline tour. Children must be 5 years of age or older to do the Aerial Tram & Canopy Zipline tour. There is no age limit for the Aerial Tram. All zipline canopy tours in Costa Rica determine their own guidelines.

Will we see animals on the [Manuel Antonio, Monkey Mangrove, Crocodile, ATV, Zipline, Carara, etc.], tour?

While we do not guarantee that you will see animals on any of the tours we offer, our tours have been designed to maximize your chances by putting you in the right place at the right time. The animals you might see on the tours we offer are wild. Although we make no direct promises, we enjoy a rich variety of wildlife in Costa Rica, so seeing animals and/or rare birds while you are in the rainforest is subject to the whims of nature. This applies to our tours of Manuel Antonio National Park , The Monkey Mangrove tour , Crocodile tours , ATV's , Zipline Canopy tours and any other tours that offer the chance to see flora and fauna in the wild.

Parenthood and Passports- ziplining Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an adventure seeker’s playground. The country is world-renowned for its adrenaline-pumping zip-lining courses, particularly in the dense rainforests surrounding the Arenal Volcano and Monteverde region.

A popular activity in Costa Rica, ziplining allows you the unique opportunity to soar through the lush rainforests of this beautiful country.

With its diverse ecosystems and abundance of wildlife, Costa Rica offers numerous options for ziplining tours that cater to thrill-seekers of all levels. However, before embarking on your high-flying journey, there are a few essential things you should know to ensure an unforgettable experience.

Ziplining in Costa Rica

This guide covers the top ziplining destinations in Costa Rica and provides you with valuable information to make the most out of your upcoming tour.

If you are considering ziplining in Costa Rica , here are a few things you should know before you book your tour.

About ziplining in Costa Rica

The Arenal rainforest

Costa Rica is a country made up of rainforests. In fact, 90 percent of the native animals in Costa Rica and 50 percent of the plant species native to the country live in the canopies, or upper levels of the rainforest. For this reason, the best way to see Costa Rica and experience its incredible ecosystem is from above!

Zip lining in Costa Rica dates back to the late 1970s , when it was primarily used as a means of exploration by researchers in the jungle. However, canopy tours are now a huge tourist draw for thrill-seekers in Costa Rica.

Our personal experience zip lining in Costa Rica

Couple traveling together in Arenal Rainforest

We visited Costa Rica when our daughter was just a baby. Despite being a thrill-seeking destination, Costa Rica is also a great destination for families .

Although we were traveling with an infant, our daughter was able to stay with grandparents, who were along for the adventure, while we went zip lining in Costa Rica – a bonus to planning a multigenerational vacation !

We zip lined at Sky Adventures in the Arenal Rainforest, just outside of La Fortuna, one of the best destinations to visit in Central America . It was such an incredible experience, and the views were unmatched!

You feel like you’re flying high above the ground, buzzing through the trees, and reaching speeds of about 30-40 miles per hour. Zip lining in Costa Rica is exhilarating, but honestly not as scary as you may think.

In our small zip lining group, we had children as young as six years old as well as older people, and all of them loved it. The system they use in Costa Rica is very safe and the guides are there to assist.

The Costa Rica zip-lining guides are also very friendly and funny which makes the experience even better, particularly for those who are apprehensive or scared going into the canopy tour.

Is ziplining in Costa Rica safe?

Costa Rica zip line tour at Sky Adventures in Arenal Rainforest

Short answer: yes. Zip lining in Costa Rica is extremely safe.

Regardless of where you go, you’ll find knowledgeable and funny guides there to assist you with your harness, slow you down or stop you if you go too fast, and make you feel comfortable before you zip off into the clouds.

Prior to embarking on the zip lining course, you will go through a brief training session to make sure you understand and are willing to comply with their safety rules. Additionally, aside from the zip lining harness, you are required to wear a helmet and gloves.

You are not allowed to take your hands off the handles to take a mid-air photo. This is not the case in some of the other countries in which we have zip lined, so we felt like zip lining in Costa Rica was much safer than many other places around the world.

Bottom line, Costa Rica takes zip lining safety seriously.

Costa Rica ziplining age limitations

one of the landing platforms at Sky Adventures ziplining tour in Costa Rica

Ziplining in Costa Rica is not an activity you can do with children under the age of five or six, depending on the tour operator.

So, if you are visiting Costa Rica with kids , please know very young children will not be able to participate, for obvious reasons. While many zip lining tours in Costa Rica require very little levels of physical fitness, the ability to hold on to the handles and follow basic instructions is a must.

Kids ages six and older can participate and will likely have a blast zip lining in Costa Rica, at least at most of the canopy tours!

For safety purposes, young children will likely be harnessed in and required to zip line with one of the experienced guides at most canopy tours. Some of the more strenuous or extreme canopy tours in Costa Rica may even have a higher age limit for participants.

Fitness or physical limitations

The aerial tram that took us up into the canopy to begin the ziplining tour.

Almost anyone of any fitness level can participate in a Costa Rica zip line adventure. You’ll be secured into a harness attached to a sturdy steel cable.

The most strenuous part of any canopy tour may actually be reaching the canopy. However, many of the Costa Rica ziplining tours have an aerial tram that takes you up to the treetops, so very little stair-climbing is required.

While we cannot speak for every zip lining tour in Costa Rica, the Sky Adventures zip line course that we did was not at all strenuous. In fact, there were very few stairs to climb, and most of the stairs were actually going down, not up.

People of most fitness levels can do this activity. Although it is important to note, zip lining in Costa Rica is not a handicap accessible experience, unfortunately.

What to wear when zip lining in Costa Rica

We would recommend wearing clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Additionally, long pants, and closed-toed shoes are a must. During the rainy season in Costa Rica, which falls between May and mid-November, zip line courses are still open and operating.

Although, they will stop the course if it is pouring rain and lightning, under most circumstances, a light rain will not result in a canceling or postponement of your activities. So be prepared and dress accordingly.

How scary is ziplining in Costa Rica?

About to zip line in Costa Rica

The question we get asked the most about ziplining in Costa Rica is whether it is scary. While this is certainly an activity for the adventurous, we would not necessarily deem it “scary”.

Even my father, who is afraid of heights, loved ziplining in Costa Rica.

You may feel nervous when you approach the first platform to zip off into the clouds, but after just one zip line, you will quickly get over your fears or nerves, and be ready for more!

The best places to zipline in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has practically become synonymous with zip lining. Here are the top rated zipline and canopy tours in Costa Rica.

Sky Adventures Zip lining in Arenal

final zipline at Sky Adventures Costa Rica ziplining

Once you start the zip line course at Sky Adventures, there is no turning back. There are approximately 7 different zip lines that will zig-zag back and forth across the Costa Rican rain forest, keeping you mostly above the canopy of the trees the entire time.

Ultimately, the course returns you to the starting point. It takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours to complete the course depending on the size of the group accompanying you in your time slot.

There is a stopping point halfway through where you can use the restroom, get a drink, and take a few photos. As you are approaching this platform, a professional photographer will also take your photo.

You can view and purchase that picture immediately afterward. You can also combine your zip lining tour with a hanging bridge tour which is equally as fun, and perhaps even more beautiful!

Zip lining in Monteverde

a map of the monteverde area showing where the ziplining operator is located

Monteverde is home to the longest zip line in Costa Rica. To experience the 5,220 foot-long zipline, you’ll need to book through Aventura Canopy Tour in Monteverde.

While this is the most popular zip line in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, it isn’t the only one.

For true thrill-seekers, the mega-mix adventure in Monteverde is sure to give you a dose of excitement and fun with activities beyond just zip lining.

Led by an experienced guide, you can test your balance during a high ropes course with 17 challenging elements, including logs, poles, and other structures suspended in air. The experience includes 8 zip line cables with panoramic mountain views. Followed by a rappel and a Tarzan swing through the jungle.

It ends with a Superman-style zip line that will have you flying through the air on your stomach for 2460 feet (750 meters) over the treetops.

Manuel Antonio Canopy Tour

canopy tours age limit

Located in the southwestern region of Costa Rica near Manuel Antonio National Park, this canopy tour takes you from the jungle floor to the treetops along a series of 20 platforms and 10 zip lines.

At the end of the tour, you have the choice between one final zip line cable or rappelling and Tarzan swing. This is great for those who are in a party of mixed abilities and comfort levels.

For those who are a bit timid, they can conclude by taking the last zip line. And for those seeking a final dose of adrenaline, they can embrace their inner Tarzan or Jane and swing to the end.

This Costa Rica zip line tour includes a meal and drinks for the price.

Zip lining in Guanacaste

Guanacaste is known more for their beaches and all-inclusive resorts . While they do have some jungle-areas and at least one beautiful waterfall , the region is not really covered in dense rainforests like other parts of Costa Rica.

However, if vacationing in Guanacaste, you can take a half-day adventure that will take you to the nearest dry forest for a canopy zip line tour in Guanacaste.

It requires a short drive, but this guided zip line tour will take you through one of Costa Rica’s tropical dry forests, where you will be surrounded by high trees and nature.

The area is home to a lot of howler monkeys who you may spot during the canopy tour.

Zip lining near Jaco

map showing where the ziplining tour is near Jaco Costa Rica

One of the best zip lining tours in Costa Rica, the canopy tour near Jaco includes a bonus waterfall view from the aerial tram.

You’ll get a great look at a cascading 40-foot waterfall, as well as panoramic views of the ocean as you ride the Pacific RainForest Aerial Tram to begin your zip lining canopy tour.

The hour-long tram ascends to the top of the mountain where you will then soar down on a steel cable zip line.

This is one of the few zip lines in Costa Rica that do not require you to hold onto the cable, as it has a controlled braking system that lets you go hands free! The canopy tour includes 10 zip lines and 15 tree platforms.

Zip lining near Limon

map showing where the ziplining course is near Puerto Limon Costa Rica

For those visiting Costa Rica on a cruise that ports in Puerto Limon, this zip lining tour is for you.

A tour guide will pick you up from the pier and take you to a jungle biological reserve. With 9 zip-line cables and 12 platforms, you’ll soar through the air nearly 300 feet above the ground.

The tour also includes a 1-hour boat ride through the Tortuguero Canals. Known as Costa Rica’s Amazon, the Tortuguero Canal region is rich with exotic flowers and other plants.

You also may spot wildlife including howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, iguanas and even crocodiles.

Hi Melissa!

At what age would you be comfortable taking your daughter ziplining? My children are 6, 9 and 11. I’m nervous doing it myself and worries about my children but don’t want to deprive them of this experience. Any reassurance would be welcome. Also when you say use the restroom is it an actual restroom or just going in nature?

We have a six-year-old, and I would feel comfortable taking her ziplining. Kids that young have to ride with one of the tour guides. I’d have your oldest two go first, followed by your 6-year-old with the guide, and then you. It felt very safe to us. And regarding the restrooms, there are nice indoor restrooms where we went ziplining.

Where do we keep our personal belongings such as sunglasses or phones or wallets ?

They have lockers where you can store stuff, but I’d recommend bringing a fanny pack to carry your phone or sunglasses. You are allowed to wear one on the ziplines.

Do you know if there is a weight limit for zip lining?

If there was a weight limit, it was fairly high. On our ziplining tour, there were definitely some people who were around 300 pounds who were able to do the course just fine.

Most ziplines wont take kids under 6 years old but this depends a lot on the kid size, they are worried the kid isnt going to have enough weight to make to the other side, most times the guides will jump with the little kids on the lines. Where are you planning to visit. NATUREGUIDE

canopy tours age limit

Some of the ZIP lines even go higher than 6 years old...up to 8 years old... I am talking about zip lines in Arenal...

Luis Road Advisor

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in paradise!

We are definitely planning to stay in Arenal for a few days. We are still in the planning stages for the trip but plan to go for at least 10 days and want to have some beach time as well. We have a 4, 6, and 7 year olds going in our group. So far we have found this place will handle four year olds.

http://www.dreamforestcanopy.com/ourdreamride.htm

We have no issue if the guide has to share the line. We definitely want to do the zip lines, so we will stay somewhere that is able to accommodate us.

If we have to, we will split into two groups and take turns watching the kids.

thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it.

Why is Costa Rica perfect for a Canopy Tour?

Of course there are a lot of canopy tours all around the world, but the special thing with this country is that the tours here will give you the opportunity to explore the richness of its wildlife and its green landscapes like if you were a bird. These amazing tours offer a great view of the forest canopy, where thick branches serve as platforms, and an incredible variety of plants, and such animals as frogs, snakes, the famous and adorable sloths , and hundreds of bird species can be seen.

The idyllic Costa Rica weather is also one of the main reasons why canopy tours are so popular among visitors and locals alike. It is possible to book one of these tours all year round; depending, obviously, on the regions of the country you will be visiting.

Travel Excellence offer different canopy tour options in almost all tourist destinations of the country. You can choose zip line tours with volcano views, ocean views, rainforest views… Whatever you want!

Recommendations for zip lining

Maybe you have done canopy tours before, but if your Costa Rica zip line tour will be your first there are some important facts that you need to know:

  • Safety practices: Zip lining in Costa Rica is a very common activity while on family vacations. This means that there are safety and maintenance practices all zip line tour companies must meet. Besides, several canopy companies have implemented unique and innovative systems so you do not have to use your hands to stop, providing improved safety and more comfort to enjoy the tour. This unique adventure is perfect for families with little children!
  • Age conditions: People of all ages can do canopy, as there is no minimum or maximum age for zip lining in the country. The only thing about this activity is that there are weight and height conditions that you must meet in order to enjoy the most this thrilling activity under safe and secure conditions.
  • Zip line weight limits : In general terms, most canopy tours in Costa Rica haven’t a maximum weight limit. This condition is mainly due to the maximum weight the cables can support, if you don’t know it, the cables can resist a force of about 5,000 lbs. This is a lot of weight! Despite this wide weight limit range, exists a waist and thigh size limit because the size of the harness has to fit around the body of the participants in order to function well and provide them safety during their tour through the forest. This measures must not exceed the size of 45 inches –this is the maximum allowed-, and the thighs must preferable be under 31 inches in its circumference. You must also know that in Costa Rica several canopy tours suggest a weight under 275 lbs.

What to Bring?

There are some important things you need to bring with you no matter which canopy tour you are going to do :

  • Comfortable clothes and shoes : Long pants to protect your legs and closed-toe shoes to protect your feet are recommended for all canopy tours in the country.
  • Insect repellent : Even if you are allergic or not, it is better if you bring repellent in order to avoid annoying mosquito bites that may appear when in the forest. If it’s natural, better!
  • Camera : As you don’t want to miss the amazing views and the funny faces you and your family are going to make! Most canopy tours offer a package of photos that you can buy after your tours.
  • Sunglass straps : To avoid missing your glasses in the forest, it will be great if you bring straps for your sunglasses or your eyeglasses, you won’t want to miss them!
  • Hat or cap : A hat will be helpful to protect your face of the sun, the rain and the wind. If you are travelling with children, a hat for them will be a good idea too. But this recommendation is for the time before the tour, as during the activity you must wear a security helmet.
  • Sun block : Because you don’t want to spend the rest of your Costa Rica vacations with sunburns.
  • Binoculars : Hopefully you will see a lot of animals and interesting flora, so take a pair of binoculars to zoom it.

It is also important to bring a poncho and a sweater if you are visiting Costa Rica in rainy season.

Extremo Canopy: Exciting Monteverde Zipline Tour

Monteverde Canopy Tours: Ziplining Tours  (optional bungee jumping!)

The Monteverde Extremo Canopy Tour is perfect for the adventure-bound, those seeking high adrenaline experiences, and not for the faint of heart! Extremo canopy is not located near the main nature reserves in the area nor over much prime forest like some of the other canopy tours but as its name suggests it is an extreme rush! This ziplining tour offers 10 Ziplines, 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), including 5 cables that range from 425m to 1km.  Included in the Canopy tour are the  Superman ,  Tarzan Swing ,  a rappel,  and a unique  tunnel cable .

If you dare! Try the thrilling  bungee jump , the highest in Central America!!

See an Exciting Video of Tarzan Swing

More Information

Extremo Canopy has 21 platforms and 10 cables, the last of which delivers you to the rappel, where you descend to the ground and the awaiting adventure of the  Tarzan Swing . Here you will start with a short hike to the upper platform from which you make your ¨big jump¨. This feature attaches to your harness and allows you to act like its namesake by jumping off the platform and swinging through the area.

The canopy covers a total distance of 4km. 4 of the ziplines measure 467m, 425m, 600m, 750m, and 1 km. The ziplines have an approximate height of 75m up to 150m.  The total duration of the tour is 3 hours.

Extremo Canopy price includes:

1.   Rappel (30m)

2.   Tarzan Swing (80m) -  See Video of Tarzan Swing

3  Superman Aerial Zip Line:  The Superman cable allows you to feel like a bird while you soar over the mountains, forest, and pasture land. It is a 1-kilometer cable with a height of 140 meters

4.   Superman Subterranean : Fly 240m through a tunnel under a mountain!

EXTRAS THAT CAN BE INCLUDED (FOR AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE)

Super Swing. An exhilarating swing on a 50m long rope, a 100m high! You will have two harnesses, chest and waist as well as a helmet and carabiners.

Difference between the Super Swing and the Tarzan Swing:  The Extreme Swing is nearly as high as the bungee, about three times higher than the Tarzan; an amazing experience. In comparison, the Tarzan swing is tame! The Extreme Swing is for anyone who likes an adrenaline kick of the highest order and not for everyone!! The Tarzan swing anyone can do and is included in the tour. The Extreme Swing carries an extra charge.

Bungee Jump : This is a unique jump, 143m high. The highest in Costa Rica and Central America  click here for more information

The Canopy Tour

Scattered throughout the tour are short hikes, totaling more than 2.8 kilometers (1.74 miles), which allows you to enjoy the surrounding secondary growth cloud forest, pasture lands, and views of the Gulf of Nicoya at a more leisurely pace than the ziplines permit. There is also a picturesque waterfall on the property ideal for photographs.

Another aspect of Extremo is positioning style when ziplining. Here, you are carefully fitted with a helmet and the popular Petzel brand harness as well as specially reinforced leather gloves. Proper position, once hanging from the cable, includes a sitting position with knees up and ankles crossed; head tilted to one side for clear visibility; dominant hand behind and on top of the cable with an open palm and a hand lightly held around the straps between the cable and your harness. Having your dominant hand directly on the cable helps stabilize balance and when pulled down acts as your brake.

The guides at Extremo, besides being very personable, are experienced, well-trained, and bilingual.

As there are no lockers for personal belongings, we recommend you bring only those items you can keep, well secured in zippered pockets or on straps, on your person.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

canopy tours age limit

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

canopy tours age limit

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

canopy tours age limit

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

canopy tours age limit

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

canopy tours age limit

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

canopy tours age limit

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

canopy tours age limit

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
