Evening Volcano Explorer (From Kona)

Difficulty rating.

Easy to Moderate

Minimum Age

Activity time, tour duration, what's included, description.

Enjoy all the best that the Big Island has to offer in just one action packed day. With the Evening Volcano Hike tour you’ll travel in comfort from your Kona area hotel, down the coast, and on to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - stopping along the way to enjoy some stunning views and a bit of local flavor.

kona hawaii volcano tour

You’ll stop to taste some Kona coffee, Hawaiian sweet breads, and enjoy a picnic lunch at a black sand beach. Then, you’ll spend the afternoon exploring the island’s main attraction - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Your park certified guide will take you on a hike to the edge of the world’s most active volcano, as well as take you on a guided tour of the many other attractions that this UNESCO World Heritage site has to offer. You’ll even get to stay in the park to enjoy the spectacular sunset.

Kona area hotel pick-ups begin at 10 am. From Kona, the tour travels south along the coast into coffee country. The coffee-friendly climate and mineral-rich volcanic soil of the Kona region produces some of the best coffee in the world, so naturally the first stop of the day involves stopping by a local coffee farm for a tasting.

Bay View Farm: Located on the slopes of Mauna Loa, Bay View Farm has been growing and roasting world class coffee since 1984. This picturesque twenty-four acre farm overlooks Kealakekua Bay, and the view alone is worth the stop. A quick tour will take you through the coffee production process - Bay View does everything onsite, so you’ll get a chance to see the coffee cherries growing, take a peek at the drying and roasting facilities, and get to sample the coffee for yourself in their tasting room/gift shop.

Punalu’u Bake Shop: The next stop along the coastline is the Punalu’u Bake Shop, which is the Southernmost bakery in the United States and the most visited bakery in the state of Hawaii. Since opening in 1991, Punalu’u has become famous for their Hawaiian sweet breads and malasadas. In addition to picking up some sweet treats for later, you can also stroll through their four-acre garden, learn more about their baking facility in their visitor center, or browse through their gift shop.

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach: Next, the tour makes a stop at the picturesque Punalu’u Black Sand Beach park for lunch. Lined with palm trees and offering a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, Punalu’u Beach is the perfect spot for a picnic lunch when the weather permits. After lunch you can go for a stroll along the black sand beach and you may even spot the rare Green Hawaiian Sea turtles feeding or sunbathing in the area.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park:   A tour of the Big Island just wouldn’t be complete with a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The park is home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Your guide will take you to some of the park’s top attractions, including:

  • Kilauea Visitor’s Center - The park’s main visitor center featuring exhibits about the park’s environment, history and culture.
  • Volcano House - A historic collection of buildings located near Kilauea’s caldera which have been serving visitors since 1877.
  • Volcano Art Center - Gallery which features an eclectic assortment of visual art created by local artists.
  • Sulphur Banks - Hiking area famous for the volcanic gasses and steam escaping through cracks in the ground.
  • Keanakako’i Crater Overlook via Old Crater Rim Drive : This portion of Crater Rim Drive has been closed to automobiles due to damage sustained during previous eruptions. Today it provides a fascinating backdrop for visitors hiking to the Keanakakoi Crater Overlook. The hike is two-miles in length (roundtrip), relatively flat, and is rated easy - although a lot of walking on uneven surfaces is required.
  • Mauna Ulu - This now dormant volcanic cone and its surrounding lava field full of oddly shaped lava flows and vibrant colors are a must see .
  • Picnic Dinner - Located in Volcano Village just outside of the park.

Meals:  A deli-style picnic lunch and a picnic dinner are included in the tour. Several entree options are available, you will be asked to select your entrees when making your reservation.

Schedule:   The Evening Volcano Hike tour runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, year-round. Kona area pick-ups begin at 10 am and guests can expect to return to Kona around 10 pm.

Tons of Photo Ops

Our afternoon tour begins with a pickup from your hotel or accommodations in one of our premium Mercedes mini-coaches. After pickup, enjoy the comfortable ride through Kona coffee country, stopping at overlooks and a farm. Afterwards, your guide will take you to Punalu’u Bake Shop. This well-known stop is the southernmost bakery in the United States and is the perfect place to pick up some Hawaiian sweet bread, malasadas, or fresh cookies.

Next stop is the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. If you have never seen a black sand beach before, the contrast with the blue water is sure to be striking, but what is even better about this stop are the sea turtles known to swim up and bask in the warm sun. Upon leaving Punalu’u, your guide will take you to the famed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The tour covers many of the most well-known stops inside the park, including Kilauea, Chain of Craters Road, and Halemau’mau Crater. At the Thurston Lava Tube, you will have a chance to stretch your legs as you are guided down the trail which is a 0.4-mile loop that will take you and your party through Nahuku which is an expansive 500-year-old lava cave.

In the late afternoon, it will be time to head out of the park to check out Hilo while there is still some light.  We will check out some sites and enjoy a wonderful dinner in town. Before heading back to your accommodations in Kona, we will stop high above, and beyond the clouds to take in some amazing stargazing. You will love your tour day, (especially because you got to sleep in).

Frequently Asked Questions

The Big Island Highlights Day Tour will begin early in the morning and includes a gourmet lunch on the rim of the Volcano and a stop at Rainbow Falls. The Deluxe Volcanoes and Dinner Tour will have a later start time, includes more focus on the Volcano National Park, as well as an elevated, three-course dinner before returning home.

Our tours are designed from the ground up for discerning travelers. From our exclusive partnerships with high-end resorts to our private tastings and experiences not open to the general public, you get unparalleled access. Forget being herded like cattle or looking over someone’s shoulder – with our upgraded Mercedes Sprinter fleet, oversized panoramic windows, luxurious leather captains chairs and warm/cold towel service – you’ll be given the white glove service from start to finish.

Our itineraries are designed to avoid peak times at busy areas. For example, at famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, we time our arrival after the large tour buses have departed to allow for a tranquil experience with the nesting honu (green sea turtles). We also have priority reservations at many of our stops to ensure an intimate and authentic experience.

While we make regular stops, preventing boredom is crucial, especially with our younger guests. That’s why our guides incorporate interactive storytelling, hands-on demonstrations like making seed leis from native plants, and activities tailored to each child’s interests. We also provide coloring books, games and other keepsakes to keep their hands and minds engaged between destinations. Our guides are also trained to modify the tour content to match appropriate age levels

We run tours rain or shine – though we’ll reschedule the tour in the event of unsafe or extreme weather. Hawaii’s microclimates mean the weather can vary across the island and we have options to adjust our itinerary to ensure you experience the best conditions while seeing our iconic sights.

Immersing you in Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage is our passion. Our local guides weave in ancient legends, historical narratives, and personal stories throughout the tour. You’ll participate in traditions like making plumeria leis, learn key Hawaiian phrases, and gain a deep appreciation for the island’s sacred sites. We go beyond just showing you the sights – we connect you to the heart and soul of Hawaii.

We limit our tours to a maximum of 12 guests per luxury Mercedes vehicle to ensure a personalized and intimate experience. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to interact with your guide, ask questions, and get to know your fellow travelers. For the ultimate in exclusivity, private tours are also available for your group alone.

While active lava flow isn’t guaranteed year-round, you’ll still witness the raw power and beauty of Hawaii’s volcanoes up close. Our expert guides prioritize your safety, using only approved trails and viewpoints. They monitor conditions in real-time and can adjust plans if needed. You’re in very capable hands to experience the wonder of standing on some of the youngest landscapes on earth!

All-inclusive means all-inclusive. All tasting fees, meals, beverages, park entries and transportation are included in one upfront price for a seamless, stress-free experience.

Tips are never required but are greatly appreciated by our hardworking guides. If you enjoy your tour experience, feel your guide provided exceptional service, and want to show your gratitude, tipping is a wonderful way to do so. While the amount is always at your discretion, a common range for full-day excursions is $20-$40 per guest.

For your safety and comfort, open alcohol containers are not allowed in our vehicles. However, wine/beer tastings are included at certain stops for those 21+ to enjoy responsibly. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available throughout the tour.

Our Mercedes vans have panoramic views that help even our most sensitive guests avoid severe motion sickness. Though we also offer amenities like ginger candies and provide frequent stops throughout the journey.

Our guides are local experts rigorously trained in service, safety and storytelling. We maintain a 5-star guest rating because of their passion and personalities. But you don’t need to take our word for it. Read more about our amazing guides from past guest reviews!

Definitely not! During your online booking, we’ll ask about any food allergies, restrictions or preferences, we’ll communicate in advance with our farm-to-table lunch providers as well as the establishments hosting our tastings. From vegetarian to gluten-free and beyond, we’ve got you covered with delicious kid-friendly options.

We welcome families on our tours! However, to ensure the safety and comfort of our youngest guests, children under 5 are only permitted on private tours. Hawaii State Law requires all children 3 years and younger to be in a proper safety seat, and children aged 4 to 7 who weigh between 40 and 80 pounds and are less than 57 inches tall must be in a booster seat. We have all child seat options available upon request at no additional charge. During the booking process, please notify us of your children’s ages and seat requirements so we can best accommodate your family’s needs.

This tour allows people to explore the island at their fitness and comfort level. It is our “Easy” tour. You will be given the opportunity to exit the vehicle to enjoy the lush and unique landscapes of Greenwell Coffee Farm, Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, Volcano Winery, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and Rainbow Falls. All walks are optional and it is up to you how far you walk at these destinations. The Thurston Lava Tube is the most strenuous part of the tour with roughly 15 steps down, a twenty-minute or 1/3 mile hike through the tube, and roughly 20 steps up.

Though we have a compact collapsible wheelchair available for guests, our guides are not able to push/assist with wheelchair mobility. Our tours are active and require some physical exertion. While on tour guests may experience some or all of the following: a large step up into the van, tight aisles, steep hills in either direction, stairs, uneven surfaces, wet surfaces, and loose sand. If you have any questions or would like to know more details about the physical aspects of your specific tour, please contact Kailani Tours staff at 808-938-4057 or [email protected] .

Kailani Tours Hawaii will provide your meals, snack baskets, beverages, hiking gear, jackets, parkas, umbrellas, flashlights, other related gear for all weather conditions, and items to help with car sickness/nausea. Please come prepared with close-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a camera.

If you are not staying at a Resort or Hotel on our list of 40 pick-up locations on the West side of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, then we have multiple centralized spots available with free and well-lit parking in the Kailua-Kona and Waikoloa areas. This is very important to have scheduled as early as possible.

A private tour allows you to go at your own pace, customize the itinerary, have more flexibility and receive upgraded services and exclusivity.

Very Best Geo Tour on the Big Island of Hawaii

Zane found his calling. He is incredibly well educated in geology, has traveled the world and knowledgeable about not only the local history, but the flora and fauna of the island too. And he is super personable and able to keep all 10 of interested for almost twelve hours of the day. We conversed about what we wanted to see on a big scale and he narrowed it to specifics based on weather, crowds and our groups patience. He was a saint. If you want to enjoy the very best island tour and get educated on the land and history, hire Zane and you will write the next five star review!

Awesome adventure!

We couldn’t have made a better choice!!! Definitely the guides know their stuff, from history of the island and its people to the geological topics that kept me entertained throughout the trip. We just about went around the island in vip style, the guys were well known everywhere they took us as well as knew their way. Will recommend it to a few friends that are planning to visit the island, it’s a must in your itinerary and couldn’t have made a better choice in tour guide services

Highly Recommend!!

Zane was incredibly knowledgeable about the island! If you want to go on a tour with a geologist, this is the one to take!! As a privately owned company, he was able to hit all of the major island highlights as well as take us to places on the island that other tour companies don’t visit. We learned so much about the history of the island and the volcanos on the island all while having a fantastic time! HIGHLY recommend!!

Hawaii Geo Tours are the best!

Wow! Fantastic tour of the erupting volcano!!! The guides are geologists and explained so much about the volcano and how all the Hawaiian islands were created. The pictures I got during the day, and especially at night were incredible! The food and winery tasting were good too. I’ve done this tour twice in the past year and recommend it highly! I wish I could give more than 5 stars!!! 🤙

family on lava flow smiling and having fun

One of the best tours ever

What an excellent way to get to know the Big Island and learn about its unique place on Earth. Our tour guide Eric picked us up on time at our rented villa along with a number of other visitors and we proceeded to spend one of the better days on a tour of the island. Eric is one of the proprietors of the tour, is a degreed geologist and is truly an engaging and friendly person. The tour was excellent which combined both interesting sights and a tremendous amount of local knowledge about lava flows and local history. To say that this was worth the day spent would be to put it mildly. Even at twice the price, I would happily do this again and recommend the tour to anyone.

T he Kilauea Visitor Center is our first stop on our tour of Volcanoes National Park and a great place to get oriented. While you're there, you can grab a park map, ask about current conditions, get hiking information and find out about ranger-led activites. Take advantage of the restrooms, and remember to fill up your water bottle before heading out. If you didn’t bring a jacket, you might want to pick one up in the gift shop as temperatures vary drastically across the park.

Note: The visitor center closes at 5:00 p.m.

Please note: Due to construction, the visitor center may be closed or housed in a temporary location .

More of a stroll than a hike, the Mauna Ulu Fissure Hike is at the site of a 1969 eruption that spewed lava up to 200 feet in the air, destroying an 'ohi'a forest in the area. As you walk you’ll see lava trees and a variety of volcanic formations. The trail is marked with stacked rocks.

One of our favorite stops on the tour is the Pu’uloa Petroglyphs Hike. As you walk along this trail, you’ll see ancient petroglyphs. These simple carvings in the lava rock tell the story of Hawaii's past. The hike takes about 20 minute each way and ends at a well maintained wooden boardwalk that circles many of the 23,000 petroglyphs in this area. In fact, this site is home to the largest grouping of petroglyphs in Hawaii! As you walk along, remember to respect the sacredness of this place.

Note: This hike can get hot, and there's no shade. Remember to bring water.

The Ha'akulamanu (Sulphur Banks) Trail is an easy 1.2-mile round trip hike. Stroll along the paved path where you’ll see steam rising dramatically from the ground in this fascinating thermal area. Ha'akulamanu is known for birds colorful deposits and clouds of steam.

The combination of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gases create the distinct rotten egg smell.

Here you can get a wonderful aerial view of the Kilauea Iki Crater. Continue down the road to see Nahuku Lava Tube and to get to the shorter hike to Kilauea Iki Crater.

Does seeing the views of massive volcanic craters ever get old? We didn’t think so! Chain of Craters Road got its name from the handful of massive craters with viewpoints along the road.

Puhimau Crater was likely formed around 1500-1800 AD. It’s a gigantic pit crater, and in our opinion, it’s one of the best views on the tour. What’s a pit crater you ask? It’s when an empty volcano collapses and forms a giant hole.

Take a short walk to the boardwalk where you can take an epic photo in front of Pauahi Crater -- another huge pit crater that’s roughly 360 feet deep and 1,600 feet long.

Pull over and get out of your car for a quick stop at Muliwai a Pele. In Hawaiian, Muliwai means river of lava. This lookout might just appear to be more lava rock, but from a bird’s-eye view you can actually see how the Maunaulu eruption flowed from this volcanic cone about 5-miles down into the ocean... truly a river of lava.

Kealakomo overlook is a platform built on top of holei pali, a steep cliff with a 2,000 foot (600 m) drop. If you brought a picnic, there are tables at the overlook. Note it can sometimes get a little windy here at this overlook.

At the Kealakomo lookout, in addition to the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, you will also have an expansive view of the lava flows from the Maunaulu eruption that buried a portion of the ancient Hawaiian village of Kealakomo.

This overlook is the last view from this high up before you descend to the ocean level.

Located at the end of the Chain of Craters Road is a fantastic view of the Holei Sea Arch. T his 90-foot arch   was formed roughly 500 years ago from an ancient lava tube that hardened as it entered the ocean. Over the years, the sea sculpted the impressive arch shape.

There is an observation area about 1,000 feet past the gate at the end of the road. You will also find vault restrooms and picnic tables.

You’ll feel like you’re on Mars as you take in the terrain on your walk along Devastation Trail. This one-mile trail takes you along the path of a destructive and explosive eruption dating back to 1959.

Along the way, you’ll see spots where life is beginning to regrow. Next to the Kilauea Iki Crater, you'll also see the giant Pu'upua'i Cinder Cone that formed during that same 1959 eruption. In Hawaiian, Pu'upua'i means "gushing hill." It's the perfect example of how Mother Nature forms new mountains.

Even though this trail has a name hard to pronounce, this hike is THE best nature walk in the park. The word "kipuka" in Hawaiian means an older area of vegetation that is surrounded by a recent lava flow.  Think of it like a forest island  surrounded by lava.

W hat you will find here are many beautiful old growth trees with lush tropical vegetation. You will see a huge diversity of rare plants, trees and even animals such as peasants and a type of quail that forage the floors here.

The trail is an easy 1.2-mile loop trail that is located on Mauna Loa Road, just past the Lava Tree Molds Drive. There is parking near the trailhead  and restrooms (vault toilets) at the nearby Kipukapuaulu Picnic Area. The hike should take about 30 minutes and has informative placards for various native plants and trees along the way.

Kilauea Overlook boasts the most dramatic views of Kilauea caldera and Halema'uma'u crater--the "fire pit" or collapsed crater within the caldera. During the 2018 eruption, powerful earthquakes rocked the summit and caused Halema'uma'u crater to collapse. The crater grew from 280 feet deep to about 1,600 feet deep and doubled in width.

In 2019, a first-ever lake of water formed in the crater! But in 2020, it was replaced by a 600-foot deep lake of lava. In 2023, the crater erupted briefly again followed by a period of quiet. However, Kilauea is not finished yet--and chances are, the next time you come back, this summit caldera and its collapsed crater will have changed shape again.

From the overlook, you can take the Crater Rim Trail and hike around the eastern rim of Kilauea.

Stop and stare at a cloud of steam formed from underground water meeting hot volcanic rock.

As soon as you enter this area, you will notice the vegetation looks dead. Pull over to the side of the road to learn about this fascinating thermal hot spot where magma is believed to be just 500 feet below the surface.

Pull over quickly and try to look for South Point in the distance. On clear days you might be able to catch a view.

This app was amazing, highly recommend! Steves: ‘It feels like a new morning in Belfast’

Belfast’s City Hall, a majestic celebration of Victorian-era pride built with industrial wealth, dominates the city center. (Courtesy photo/Cameron Hewitt )

Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital city, is perhaps best known for the sectarian strife that took place here during the era of the Troubles, and as the birthplace of the Titanic (and many other ships that didn’t sink). While these two claims to fame aren’t too uplifting, Belfast’s story is hardly a downer. This unsinkable city, just two hours away from Dublin by train, makes for a fascinating day trip.

Wandering through Belfast’s cheery modern-day downtown, it’s hard to believe the bright and bustling pedestrian center had been a subdued, traffic-free security zone not long ago. But it’s no longer dangerous here. While Belfast has the rough edges of any industrial big city, you have to look for trouble to find it. The city is busy with tourists, and aggressive sectarian murals are being repainted with scenes celebrating heritage and pride. It feels like a new morning in Belfast.

Though people from all walks of Belfast life congregate, work, eat, and play in the thriving city center, Unionists (mostly Protestants who feel they’re primarily British) and Nationalists (mostly Catholic Republicans — those pushing to end British rule in the North) still typically live in segregated zones, where some tensions still simmer. A Belfast visit wouldn’t be complete without visiting the working-class neighborhoods where the two groups live parallel lives along parallel roads on either side of a “peace wall”: the Unionists along Shankill Road and the Nationalists along Falls Road.

While you can easily and safely walk through these districts on your own, and some tours offer balanced accounts of the challenging times of the Troubles, I find the area’s best enjoyed with a private taxi tour. The cabbies who offer tours of these neighborhoods grew up here and know their city well, offering honest (if biased) viewpoints on the Troubles, political murals, and local culture. My time with them is always the most interesting 90 minutes of any visit to Belfast.

I once had a guide who was particularly determined to make his country’s struggles vivid. He introduced me to Belfast’s Felons Club pub, run by Republican ex-prisoners. Hearing heroic stories of Irish resistance while sharing a Guinness with a celebrity felon gave me an affinity for their struggles. The next day at Milltown Cemetery, I walked through the green-trimmed gravesites of his prison-mates — some of whom starved themselves to death for the cause of Irish independence throughout the isle.

The easiest way to get a dose of the Unionist/Protestant side is to walk Sandy Row, the namesake street of Belfast’s oldest residential neighborhood. Stop at a Unionist memorabilia shop or pub and ask a local to explain the Unionist symbolism that fills colorful murals here.

Across the River Lagan, east of the center, the historic Titanic Quarter — the former shipbuilding district now filled with museums, entertainment, and a hockey arena (where both Unionists and Nationalists root for the Belfast Giants) — symbolizes the rise of Belfast. Next to the original slipways where the Titanic was built, the massive Titanic Belfast museum commemorates Belfast’s shipbuilding industry. Six stories tall, the striking museum is clad with more than 3,000 sun-reflecting aluminum panels. Inside, the tale of the famous cruise liner is told with creative displays — beginning with a short gondola ride through a mock-up of the ship while it was being built.

At the heart of town is another impressive landmark: Belfast’s City Hall. This grand structure’s 173-foot-tall, green copper dome dominates the city center. City Hall faces the commercial hub of Belfast, Donegall Place. Queen Victoria would recognize the fine 19th-century brick buildings here — built in the Scottish Baronial style when the Scots dominated Belfast. But she’d be amazed by the changes since then. Belfast was bombed by the Germans in World War II, and, with the Troubles killing the economy at the end of the 20th century, for decades afterward, little was built. But with peace in 1998 — and government investing to subsidize that peace — the 21st century has been one big building boom.

On my latest trip, rainy weather led me to a Belfast gem I’d never explored before: St. George’s Market. This was once the largest covered produce market in Ireland, filled with merchants selling butchered meat and fish. Today, the farmers are gone and everyone else, it seems, has moved in. Every weekend, St. George’s Market becomes a colorful artisan, crafts, and flea market with a few fish and produce stalls to round things out. With a diverse array of street food and homemade goodies added to the mix, it’s a fun place for lunch and people-watching.

Speeding on the train back to Dublin, past the peaceful, lush Irish countryside, you may find yourself pondering the resilience of Belfast’s people. Ireland isn’t just Blarney Stones and leprechauns, and Belfast’s troubled history is a key part of its story. A visit here offers a chance to balance your Irish vacation — and witness a city’s powerful rebound.
