How to Spend Three Days in Key West: A 2023 Itinerary

key west florida travel blog

Lying 90 miles north of Cuba and famed for its pastel-hued conch-style houses, devotion to Ernst Hemingway, and litany of key lime pie options Key West is your ultimate destination for sun, snorkeling, and an all around good time with activities for anyone and everyone.

Key West is one of the most easy going and accepting environments that you can visit. The full time residents are an all inclusive cultural package with people from all over the United States and the world calling this tiny paradise home.  Everyone has a smile for you down there and you won’t find a livelier environment.

The entire island is the ideal get away destination.  In Key West you don’t need to think a lot about the whole trip, it is an easy relaxed vacation place, a convenient place, and it can be anything, as low-key or as high-key as you want.  Families can spend a few hours relaxing at one of many beaches, go on a dolphin snorkeling adventure, or take the kids fishing off of the Edward Knight Pier.

For those of you who really get to know your vacation destination through your stomachs sample the endless array of delicious cuisines from the classic key lime pie to some of the best Cuban food you can find outside the streets of Havana.  Or you can saddle up to some of the local watering holes and wet your whistle with deliciously strong and cheap drinks.

There are also aspects of Key West that are off the beaten path like local exotic bird rescues run out of the back of a legendary old style house in the Meadows area.  Secret gardens planted in the bones of old military bunkers with succulents as big as a car.  If you venture to go even weirder you can even test your fate and visit a demonically possessed doll named Robert.

There is so much to do on this tiny little island so consider this to be your own personally curated list of must do’s and see’s.  Don’t feel the need to stick to the order of this particular itinerary neither the great thing about Key West is convenience.  Mix and match the activities on this list or just pick at random and go with the flow.  Any of the options listed are a guaranteed good time with a few surprise twists along the way.

Day One: The Perfect Introduction to Key West

Rent a bike and get the lay of the land.

Speaking of convenience one of the best ways to explore Key West is by bicycle.  There are several excellent bike rental companies on the island that will let you rent bikes for days at a time.  Rates are very affordable and this is the cheapest way to get around the island.  One of the most popular spots to rent all kinds of bikes is Key West Bicycles.  They have top of the line tandem bikes, tricycles, and beach cruisers so there is something for everyone to ride and enjoy.  They also offer free bike delivery anywhere in Key West!

Breakfast at Key West Cuban Coffee

Peddle your way on over to Old Town for some of the best Cortadito (Cuban coffee) and guava and cheese empanada’s to ever grace your taste buds.  Just off the famed Duval Street is Key West Cuban Coffee, a little local hole in the wall restaurant on Truman Avenue serving breakfast lunch and dinner from 8:00am-5:00pm.  Everything is made from scratch and it is a get in and get out type of service so you can score a great meal for a great price all day long including fish tacos, burritos, torta huevos, and of course the classic Cuban sandwich.

Check Out the Southernmost Point of the U.S.

After you’ve fortified your strength for the day with Cuban espresso and beans, next opt to commemorate your time in Key West with an iconic Southernmost Point photograph.

Yes, this large concrete buoy marks the southernmost point of the continental U.S., so it’s well-worth getting your photo with it.

Most importantly, this landmark will be an anchoring point for the rest of your day’s itinerary, as it’s so close to many of Key West’s finest attractions.

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

Just a two-minute walk from the Southernmost Point is the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory.

This place is extremely family friendly and it is next to impossible not to leave happy and stress free. The conservatory hosts 60 different species of butterflies from around the world, as well as a selection of rare birds, including a pair of flamingos who take center stage right in the middle of the conservatory.

On occasion, hundreds of butterflies flutter past your face, making it almost impossible to see other people around you. You can also observe their caterpillar nursery and see the magic at work.

Fort Zachary Historic State Beach Park

By now breakfast should be fully digested and you and your family are ready for a nice cool dip in the tranquil waters at Fort Zachary. This is the ideal place for kids to swim. You walk through an ocean forest with a tree lined path that opens onto the beautiful beach with clear and calm waters. This oasis also has a little snack bar, and you can even take a shower, or get a beer, rent kayaks or floats for the little ones. There are also trails to hike as well as good tours to check out on the history of the Fort that predates the Civil War. You can still make out the holes in the walls where the canons once sat. It is possible to spend hours here making it an easy win for your day one itinerary.

Catch the Sunset at Mallory Square

If there’s one thing that every visitor to Key West does, it’s this. Each evening, as the sun begins to fall, the majority of Key West seemingly makes their way over to Mallory Square.

Yes, no matter what time of year you’re visiting, you’ll be in for a fantastic show. While the sky turns sunset, entertainers, acrobats, musicians, and artists gather to celebrate the end of another day. There’s a real carnival atmosphere in the air here, so as touristy as it is, it’s well-worth doing at least once.

Day Two: Dipping Into Key West’s History

key west florida travel blog

Breakfast at Blue Heaven

Kick off your second day in Key West the right way, by heading straight to Blue Heaven for breakfast. Although you’ll want to be early, because everybody in town has likely had the exact same idea. Either aim to get there at around 8 a.m., when it opens, or prepare for a 30-minute wait later in the day.

So why bother with the wait? This restaurant is an iconic staple

This spot is an iconic staple of Key West culture, serving up Floridian-Caribbean inspired cuisine in a tropical setting.

where you can often take in live music and other performances.

Your morning dining companions will not only be your family, but a host of roosters and chickens while you sample some fresh made juices and homemade breads, while relaxing in the idyllic courtyard.

If you’re the type that usually has a hankering for a bloody mary with brunch, fear not: this cocktail is one of the specialties of Blue Heaven.

Before you leave, make sure you grab a Key lime pie to sample, whether for dessert to take-away. Blue Heaven’s Key lime pies have rated first on the island for 17 years straight, so this is easily the place to sample one.

Visit the Hemingway House

Throughout most of the 1930s this Pulitzer Prize winning author lived and wrote in Key West. The island shows its love for the esteemed author by putting on and hosting a number of interesting affairs including a Hemingway style run with the bulls. Every summer Ernest Hemingway impersonators parade a manmade bull on wheels down Duval Street in the annual Hemingway Days Festival. However for those of you who will not be in town for the festival you can always visit Hemingway’s home to get a better sense of the author’s time on the island including a visit with some 40 six toed cats, all supposed descendants of Hemingway’s white six-toed cat, gifted to him by a ships’ captain as the legend goes. This 1930s home also has a mammoth sized pool, unusual for a home at that time in Key West. This endeavor cost $20,000 dollars to complete and holds 80,784 gallons.

The Nancy Forrester Secret Garden

Before your historical tour of Key West continues slip something a little fun and whimsical in there and visit Nancy Forrester and her exotic birds. Nancy Forester, an artist and animal lover has spent the last 35 years rescuing exotic macaws from traumatic situations. Every bird in her care comes with an incredible backstory and personality. Visitors can interact with the birds and even play games and make art. It is just a $10 donation to enter the center, which is located in the back of Nancy’s amazing house, an old style home in the Meadows neighborhood of Key West. This place is truly engaging and one of a kind and what’s more your contribution goes towards helping the birds.

Truman Little White House

The next stop is Florida’s only Presidential Museum at the Truman Little White House. Originally constructed in 1890 as naval officers housing this historic site was the official abode of United States President Harry S. Truman. The former president spent a total of 175 days of his presidency in the home having made Key West his winter destination for many years. Other important visitors have included Thomas Edison, Edward Hayden, as well as six other US presidents including William Howard Taft, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy as well as Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. The home was also the site of international peace talks between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2001.

While Key West is predominantly known for its beaches, pies, and coral reefs, there’s a darker side to the island that’s a hell of a lot of fun to explore.

Allow me to introduce you to Ghosts and Gravestones

Key West is home to several supposedly haunted locations including many cemeteries, homes, piers, and even inanimate objects like Robert the Doll. This famed cloth boy located now at the East Martello Fort could’ve been the inspiration behind every haunted doll movie ever made in Hollywood. Or if possessed dolls are not your preferred fright the Key West Cemetery in Old Key West is sure to deliver on plenty of ghoulish surprises. Ghouls and Gravestones haunted tours can usher you around haunted Key West with individual ticket pricing as well as group rates. They offer day tours as well as night tours for those of you who are brave enough.

Key West Garden Club

Begin your final day in Key West with some peace and tranquility at the Key West Garden Club. This unexpected gem was originally a bunker but today is an incredibly beautiful garden space. This place is not a part of the tourist scene but is an ideal way to start your last morning in Key West. Grab a couple of pastries and coffees and take a leisurely stroll amongst waterfall gardens, prehistoric plant varieties, orchid areas, cactus gardens, as well as their garden by the sea. If you are a couple you can commemorate your love permanently by inscribing your initials with hundreds of others on the “Lover’s Cactus” located on the beach side of the gardens.

Swimming with the Dolphins, Snorkeling, and Sunset Cruise

After your relaxing morning, it is now time for some more fun and sun as well as close interaction with Key West’s mystifying and beautiful marine flora and fauna. Fury Dolphin Eco-Tours offers the only dolphin safe certified tour in Key West in addition to being one of the most memorable dolphin and snorkeling experiences. Expert guides are waiting to take you aboard to watch bottle nose dolphins playing in their natural habitat followed by snorkeling along the shallow backcountry where you are likely to sight stingrays, schools of fish, sea rods, sponges, and other wide varieties of marine life. Finish the experience with one of Fury’s signature sunset cruises before making your way onto dry land before mealtime.

Dinner at El Siboney

If you were to ask the locals where to go for the best and most authentic Cuban home-style food and drink, they would tell you to run, not walk, to El Siboney on Catherine Street.

Siboney is actually the name of one of Cuba’s two indigenous groups, and this family-owned and operated establishment has been one of Key West’s best spots for Cuban food since 1984.  If you’re part of a group, call ahead and order the Paella Valencia, then wash it down with a glass of their house sangria.

Catch a Drag Show or Three

Key West is known for it’s vibrant and thriving gay community, and for those of you who are over 21, there are several incredible drag shows to catch on the island.

You should definitely try and make a reservation at Aqua Bar and Night Club on Duval Street. This hot spot on Key West’s iconic avenue features a cast of fabulous drag divas, ready to lip sync for their lives. Thursday through Sunday you can catch one of two shows either at 7:00pm or 9:00pm.

The show there is so amazing, many people stay for both showings and continue to dance with the queens into the night.

There is also La-te-da which doubles as a cabaret and hotel! The hotel also offers gourmet dining and some of Key West’s most exciting bar scenes.

Knock back a cocktail at any one of these LGBTQ+ institutions and finish your trip with a bang!

key west florida travel blog

If you frequent Key West often enough, it starts to feel like a little second home.

It’s safe to say, the entire atmosphere puts a spell on you every time you go, with unbelievable and singular history, style, food, and people.

Whether you’re traveling with your family, friends, or just looking to take some time for yourself, the island holds endless possibilities and experiences. No matter what your background or age, Key West’s easy going and “come as you are” vibe will definitely send you home happier than when you arrived.

You’ll have just one question on your lips: when can I return?

Have you been to Key West before? What was your favorite attraction?

On a Sailboat

We stayed a few nights on this BOAT – which I highly recommend. We stayed on board took the catamaran sailboat out for the day (they provide you with a captain) but otherwise it was docked in the chic marina.

Even when it’s docked, it’s SO fun to be on a boat, and you have access to the nice hotel right in the marina, too for an easy pool, and a really good bar and restaurant to hang out in. There’s something about a happy hour in the marina that just hits different, ya know??

The Perry Hotel Key West

This is the hotel connected to the Marina in Key West – so you have access to it if you’re staying on a boat. It was SUPER nice and we ate here a couple nights. The bar makes delicious cocktails, and the pool is a great spot to spend the day. The only downside is it’s 20 minutes from Duval Street and downtown, but it’s kind of nice to be tucked away, too.

Ocean’s Edge Resort & Marina

15 minutes outside of Key West, which is great to be a little tucked away from the Duval St. craziness. Popular with families, couples.

You must, must, MUST eat brunch at Blue Heaven – this place is easily one of my favorite restaurants in the WORLD, and it’s absolutely worth the hype. I get the lobster BLT eggs benedict – with avocado instead of tomato – and it is  heaven . They home-make all their breads too so make sure you try the banana bread – and a bloody mary – so yummy!

Louie’s Backyard

For the best views and waterfront dining – and the most delicious Caribbean-American cuisine dinner in Key West, Louie’s is the spot! A must stop on any trip to Key West.

Watch the sunset in Mallory Square

Watching the sunset in Mallory Square is essentially a religion in Key West. Every night, street performers, artists, and the like gather in Mallory Square for a sunset celebration. It’s fun to walk around and see!

Go to the beach!

Check out Fort Zachary Taylor – a Florida state park with great snorkeling.

The best bars to go out in Key West

When it comes to Key West nightlife, there’s no shortage of fun and funky bars to check out. I loved the live music at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, and my favorite going out spot was the upstairs of Rick’s Key West – which has a huge outdoor space and was super fun. From there, you can walk up and down Duval Street and there’s a ton of fun bars.

What to know before your trip to Key West

It’s a popular spot! Make your dinner reservations ahead of time – especially if you have a group. I was shocked that we couldn’t get in some of the best restaurants in Key West – even on a weekday! So definitely make those reservations, and you’ll be all set.

The weather in Key West is amazing year round – but you do have to watch out for hurricane season from June through early November.

Latitudes is one of the classiest restaurants in Key West. To reach it you’ll have to hop on a free ferry because Latitudes is on an island of its own!

With waterfront seating, delicious food, and excellent service, it’s open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, savor the lobster benedict. For lunch, try the surf & turf burger. And for dinner, twirl up the Key West pink shrimp carbonara or cut into the lemon glazed yellowtail snapper.

This French-inspired restaurant serves up some of the best crepes in town. Enjoy them for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

There are also a good number of vegetarian options available at Banana Café.

The Ultimate Key West, Florida Bucket List | 98 Things to Do

Overseas highway on the Florida Keys

Thinking of heading to Key West? Here is the ultimate Key, West Florida bucket list! A few years ago, I spent a summer working at a color-changing T-shirt shop in Key West, Florida. I think my dad was a little worried and thought I was going to be working at a little shack on the beach bumming my way through the summer.

However, the shop where I worked was right next to the cruise ship docks and only a couple of blocks from Duval Street. So every day I admired the giant cruise ships and amazing yachts riding up to the docks. Then I wandered my way through town on my scooter every night after work.

Because of this, I think I know some of what I’m talking about and even have compiled 17 things you need to know before visiting Key Wes t! Key West, Florida can be known for Duval Street’s drinking and partying each night. However, I didn’t spend any of my time on the island drinking or partying 🙃 (crazy, right?). Instead I spent my time exploring every.single.inch of the island (way beyond Duval Street). And I found all of the amazing things to do in Key West, Florida. Plus I found unique places to eat , and hidden gems to explore.

I have since taken my husband back to Key West on an amazing Florida roadtrip . We started at Walt Disney World then made our way all the way through the Florida Keys to Key West.

However, ever since that roadtrip, I have been daydreaming about returning and spending an entire week just on the island of Key West to be able to fully relax and unwind. Plus this time we’d get to bring along our little tot 😍.

Getting to Key West

Key West has its own local, international airport. However, I recommend flying into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale instead. Then I recommend you rent a car and enjoy the amazing 3.5-hour drive on the Overseas Highway to Key West. Plus Miami and Fort Lauderdale will most likely have less expensive flights than Key West.

Where to stay in Key West, Florida

Lodging in Key West, Florida can be pretty pricey (booo👎). I’d plan on budgeting *at least* $175 per night for lodging (that’s on the lower end). And, if you are looking at trying to save money, you may be able to find a better deal on an Airbnb .

I recommend looking for an Airbnb with a kitchen because this will help you save a lot of money on eating out! However, staying in a fancy hotel with a private pool and beach sounds pretty amazing too. For example the Casa Marina Key West by Hilton . Maybe one day I’ll have that kind of $$$ 🤞🤞🤞.

Use this link to save up to $65 on your first Airbnb booking.

Thank you for this list! We leave next week and I’m excited to visit! I just feel like 4 days (2 of non travel) won’t be enough. How many things should we cram into the day?

Hey Lauren! You can get a good feel of Key West in two full days. I would recommend following my one day in Key West itinerary for the first day and then picking one of these awesome water excursions for the second day. This will get you to most of the top sites and getting out on the water is one of the best things you can do! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Casa Maria is now owned by Hilton, not the Westin. They are a sister to The Reach Curio Collection. You might want to include that some restaurants are closed during September (Blue Heaven for one) for vacation. I’m keeping this list for our next trip down; we just got back and are ready to go again!!

Hey Cindy, thanks for the update 🙂 I’ll update hotel information in the post. I hope you get to get back to key West soon!

This list is awesome, and even having been to the keys many times I find many things on here to check out still! I’m shocked that the resort for suggestion is Casa Marina and wonder if anyone here has stayed there recently? We booked it in Jan2023 for March2023, and have only seen abysmal reviews lately. We are worried to say the least!! Any insight?

Hey Linda- I’m so happy to hear this was helpful! I just checked out some of the recent reviews for Casa Marina and-yikes! it looks like things may have gone a little downhill (but they may be getting a renovation soon?). Anyway, I always trust my gut when it comes to reading reviews. If you are feeling unsettled about your accommodations, you may want to see if you have any options to rebook elsewhere. I hope you have an awesome time! The two hotels at the top of my list to try are The Perry Hotel and Marina Key West and Southernmost Beach Resort .

Love your list ❤️. We’ve done many of them!! Going again in June can’t wait to try more that you suggested that we haven’t thought of!! Thanks😀👍🌴

Hi Nancy! I’m so glad to hear you were able to come up with a few more ideas from this list. I hope you have a great visit in June 🙂

Thanks for the info! We are driving down from Miami on the 30th, only staying 1 1/2 days. We will use some of your suggestions, but assume after a brief visit we will return for a more lengthy stay next winter. I now wish we had a few more days before returning to our rental in Miami!

I’m glad this could be helpful to you 🙂 I hope you have an awesome trip and I so wish we could be there right now as well!

How to get there, how to get around.

You don’t have to break out your passport to spend a few days in an island paradise. Just head to Key West, Florida.

Key West is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in America, and dare we say, the world. Its gin-clear waters that lap up against white-sand beaches will leave you in awe. Its vibrant community and fun nightlife will leave you with lasting memories. And its water activities — like snorkeling, diving, and deep-sea fishing — will keep you active from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

"Key West has hundreds of years of interesting and infamous history, which includes pirates, shipwrecking, treasure, rum running, military exploits, and billionaire's ventures,” Analise Smith, founder of Key West Food Tours, told Travel + Leisure . “Its melting pot of culture and turquoise ocean surroundings has given way to a vibrant food scene, which includes the most delicious selection of local seafood and tropical fruits.”

Smith added, “When deciding why to come to Key West, it might be a shorter list to ask, 'Why not?' And either way, you'll have a hard time convincing yourself out of the idea.”

Best Hotels and Resorts

Courtesy of Marquesa Hotel

Marquesa Hotel

The Marquesa Hotel embodies the Key West spirit through and through. The hotel, which was voted one of the best resorts in Florida by T+L readers in 2023, is classically styled with dark wood flooring and easy breezy island furnishings, and a bright blue exterior paint color that matches the nearby sea. Don’t miss the on-site Café Marquesa for an upscale meal.

Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Ocean Key Resort & Spa has perhaps the most coveted address in all of Key West: Zero Duval Street. The hotel — also voted one of the best resorts in Florida by T+L readers in 2023 — could not be more conveniently located and boasts spacious rooms and suites, each with an epic view of the ocean or Duval Street.

Sunset Key Cottages

For a little bit of luxury and solitude, find your way to Sunset Key Cottages , which was a T+L reader favorite in 2022 . The resort sits nestled on a 27-acre private island just off the coast of Key West, and offers up to four-bedroom abodes so even large families can vacation together.

“Though we are only a four-mile by two-mile island, we are chock full of ‘must experience’ things to do,” Smith said. Here are a few not-to-miss highlights.

Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum

Celebrate the life and work of Key West’s literary great, Ernest Hemingway, with a visit to his former residence-turned-museum, aptly named The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum . The home is perfectly preserved just as he left it in the 1930s. It showcases personal items and antiques — and displays the very areas where he penned some of history’s greatest novels. The museum is also home to a large colony of polydactyl (six-toed) cats , which are all descendants of Hemingway's own feline companions.

Southernmost Point

Go ahead and take an iconic Instagram photo at Southernmost Point . The massive buoy, built in 1983, marks the location of, as the name suggests, the southernmost point in the United States. It has become a popular destination for visitors in Key West to also mark their time on vacation with at least a photo of two.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

Explore a bit of American history with a visit to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park . It is home to the largest archive of Civil War armament on Earth. It also has a gorgeous beach that is open to the public for swimming, snorkeling, and outdoor dining. As the southernmost state park in the continental United States, it is yet another cool spot to visit when in Key West.

Key West Food Tours

Get a taste of what Key West has to offer with Smith's Key West Food Tours . Smith offers a variety of tours, including a tasting and cultural tour showcasing the island’s Cuban and Caribbean flavors, along with a seafood experience, bar crawl, and even a food tour dedicated to Hemingway.

The Green Parrot

As one of the oldest bars in Key West, The Green Parrot is the place to be to mix and mingle with locals. The bar is well-known for its local music and its stellar drinks, but don’t come hungry as it only serves snacks.

The Bull and Whistle

Enjoy even more of the Key West weather by sipping a cocktail or a cold beer at The Bull and Whistle , an open-air bar right on Duval Street. The bar offers table seating facing its small stage for local acts, a large bar to belly up to, and plenty of pool tables so you can challenge your travel companions to a game.

Key West has a vibrant drag scene, and there’s no better place to experience it than at Aquaplex . The nightclub puts on shows every Monday and Tuesday at 9 p.m. and every Wednesday to Sunday at both 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., giving you plenty of opportunities to see your favorite act.

Best Restaurants

According to Smith, the best part about dining in Key West is that no matter where you go, you’ll likely end up with a great view. “The local grocery stores and even the fast food chain restaurants have ocean views,” Smith said. But perhaps more importantly: “The food is so fresh and local — you'll likely eat delicious sustainable fish and shrimp here that you won't see anywhere else in the country.”

Blue Heaven

Start your day in Key West off with a delicious bang with a visit to Blue Heaven . The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but is most well-known for its outrageously good morning menu. The popular pancakes are made from scratch and come in plain, banana, pineapple, pecan, or blueberry. Meanwhile, its shrimp and grits come with a side of its famous Betty's Banana Bread.

Garbo’s Grill

Dig into some seafood delights with a meal at Garbo’s Grill . The diner specializes in quick and easy bites like its Cayo Fish, made with red cabbage, mango, jalapeno, cilantro, onion, and its house Caribbean sauce over whatever the fish of the day is. Also notable is its highly beloved lobster roll, crafted with Maine Lobster meat and mayo on a buttered and grilled roll.

Azur Restaurant

For an upscale evening in Key West, head to Azur Restaurant . The Mediterranean eatery sits a few blocks off of Duval Street, providing a quieter atmosphere to enjoy a luxurious meal. The menu includes the likes of Key West pink shrimp in a lemon butter and garlic sauce, and steamed mussels in a rosemary and tomato broth.

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe

No visit to Key West would be complete without getting at least a slice, or two, or heck, an entire key lime pie. Find the sweetest of the bunch at Kermit’s , a one-time roadside stand turned popular bakery with two locations in the Keys. The shop sells other dessert treats, but none can top its key lime pies and pie bars. And if you really fall in love with them, you can always have Kermit’s shipped to anywhere in the continental U.S.

The best time to visit Key West is from January to May, when the temperatures around the rest of the nation tend to dip, but remain relatively constant in the Keys.

“Winter tends to be a guest favorite,” Smith said. “There's not too many U.S. destinations that are still running snorkel and dive trips in January, and are booking out their outside dining faster than their inside tables. When it's snow and icicles everywhere else, we are our company motto: ‘Sun, Rum, and Key lime pie.’”

However, Key West is home to several stellar annual festivals throughout the year that are worthy of planning a trip around. That includes The Key Lime Festival , which typically runs in late June or early July, along with Hemingway Days , which honors the life of Hemingway. There’s also Fantasy Fest , a massive, 10-day party extravaganza held in late October, which includes parades, drag performances, costume contests, and a pageant to crown the King and Queen of Fantasy Fest.

There are two ways to get to Key West: drive or fly. There are direct flights to Key West International Airport (EYW) from all around the country, including flights from Chicago, Dallas, New York City, Boston, Charlotte, and Atlanta.

Though it could take you longer, driving to Key West from Miami is an experience all on its own. Visitors can rent a car in Miami and hop on the US 1, known as the Overseas Highway , which takes guests across 106 glorious miles and over 42 bridges, with epic views from start to finish.

Chris LaBasco/Getty Images

Smith noted that “walking and bicycling are the transportation of choice” in Key West. However, there are a few other modes of transport you can try.

Uber: Uber is operational in Key West. It’s available to and from the Key West International Airport.

Taxi: There are several local taxi services operating in Key West, including Key West Taxi and D.B. Taxi , both of which operate 24/7.

Pedicab: Want more of a scenic ride? Hop on any of the pedicabs traversing Key West. The rides are much more expensive than traditional cabs but do come with a lot more fun. You can also book pedicabs in advance for tours around town .

How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Key West Itinerary

With only 3 days in Key West, we set out to experience as many different facets of the city as we could.

We had outdoor adventures, taking part in some of the best activities Key West has to offer- sailing, snorkeling and kayaking.

We delved into history, touring historic homes and learning about the people that helped shape Key West into the city it is today.

And of course, we made sure to get on “island time” by slowing down, relaxing on the waterfront and taking it all in!

travelyesplease.com | How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Itinerary

So, here’s a look at how we spent our 3 days in Key West. We stayed away from the more “touristy” activities and locations like Duval Street. The result was a trip that focused on outdoor and historic experiences that to us, felt like authentic, unspoiled Key West. We honestly wouldn’t change a thing about our Key West itinerary, other than book a longer trip next time!

Day 1- Enjoy Some Water Sports and a Sunset Sail

Our first day in Key West was an active one! We spent nearly the entire day out on the water snorkeling, kayaking and sailing.

In the morning we decided to go on a half-day excursion with Danger Charters . We really liked this trip because it combined all the activities we wanted to do into one nice package.

First, we sailed on a schooner out to a reef where we had the opportunity to go snorkeling. The water wasn’t super clear that day but we did get to see some rays, smaller fish and a lot of sponges.

Next, we got back on the schooner and sailed to a mangrove island. We took out the sea kayaks and followed our guide on a nature tour around the island. We learned all about the mangroves, local birds and other wildlife. We even saw a nurse shark swimming in the shallow waters around our kayaks!

Back on the schooner for the final sail to Key West, we chatted over drinks and snacked on fresh tropical fruits, chips and salsa. This excursion was a fantastic introduction to Key West and while we didn’t want it to end, we were looking forward to another sailing adventure that evening.

There was no better way to end our first day in Key West than with a romantic sunset sail on the Appledore V . Seeing the sky fill with various shades of warm colours was a wonderful experience made all the more memorable by being on board a 65 foot schooner.

Day 2- Visit Dry Tortugas National Park

Our second day in Key West was our favourite, and the highlight of our trip to Florida.

It began with an early morning ferry ride on the Yankee Freedom III . About 2.5 hours later we arrived at Dry Tortugas National Park where we spent the day touring historic Fort Jefferson and snorkeling in the pristine waters.

travelyesplease.com | How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Itinerary

It was a long day, but very well worth the trip. Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the coolest places we’ve visited and should definitely be included on a Key West itinerary.

Day 3- Explore Key West, Visit the Historic Homes and Celebrate the Sunset

On our last day in Key West, Mike chartered a boat and went fishing while I explored Key West by bike.

I started my day with a bike ride to Smathers Beach , the largest public beach in Key West. I walked along the sand and hung out under the palm trees for a short while before hopping back on my bike and riding towards the Old Town.

travelyesplease.com | How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Itinerary

My next stop was the marker indicating the Southernmost Point in the Continental USA. From here, it’s only 90 miles to Cuba.

travelyesplease.com | How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Itinerary

Continuing on, I passed by the Key West lighthouse on my way to Ernest Hemingway’s Home . I did a self-guided tour around the house and spent some time (okay, a lot of time), playing with the cats that live there.

travelyesplease.com | How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Itinerary

Next up, I headed over to the Harry S. Truman Little White House . This surprisingly unassuming house was the winter home of President Truman, from 1946-1952. Before that though, the house served as command headquarters for the naval station during the Spanish-American War and both World Wars. The tour I took was very interesting and even included a short video of clips from Truman’s time in Key West.

travelyesplease.com | How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Itinerary

The last historic home I visited was the Audubon House and it turned out to be my favourite of all the ones I visited in Key West. Not only is the house very cute, there are some beautiful works of art by naturalist John James Audubon on display inside. For me, the best part was actually not the house itself, but the surrounding tropical gardens. It was a wonderful place to enjoy a rest and some peace and quiet after a busy day exploring the town.

travelyesplease.com | How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Itinerary

With a little bit of time to spare before Mike returned from his fishing trip, I headed over to the Key West Historic Memorial Sculpture Garden . The garden features 36 bronze busts of individuals who have had the greatest impact on Key West.

travelyesplease.com | How to Spend 3 Days in Key West- Our Itinerary

We decided to end our 3 days in Key West by taking in one last famous Key West sunset. This time, we watched the sun go down from Mallory Square where every night there’s a street carnival celebrating the sunset. We watched a few of the street performers but honestly, nothing compares to the show Mother Nature puts on every night!

Final Thoughts About Our 3 Days in Key West

As the sun set on our 3 day trip to Key West, we were disappointed to have to say goodbye. Key West really had it all- a fascinating history, unique architecture, natural beauty, outdoor adventures and delicious food.

Our time in Key West, and the rest of the Florida Keys, were some of our favourite days in Florida. The Keys have a distinct, laid back vibe that we really enjoyed. It was a welcome change from the all traffic and busy toll roads in the rest of Florida!

This may have been our first visit to Key West, but we’re hoping it won’t be the last. After all, legend holds that once Key West sand gets in your shoes, you’ll return time and time again!

Tips for Visiting Key West

Getting Around: The best way to get around Key West is by bicycle. There is almost no free parking in the heart of Key West, but plenty of bike racks. The B&B we stayed at arranged our rentals and the bikes (and locks) were dropped off for us. The bikes were picked up and the end of our rental. We paid $10 a day/bike.

Costs: Overall, we found Key West to be very expensive. Both accommodations and food were pricier than we were expecting. I’d say budget for at least $250 US a night (on the low end) for something in the Old Town.

Water Sports: The Sail, Snorkel and Kayak trip we did was with Danger Charters. The staff was excellent and made sure everyone was comfortable snorkeling. They also were very knowledgeable about the area, giving a great tour around the mangrove island. I liked how the activities weren’t rushed, giving us plenty of time to enjoy!

  • The morning half-day excursion begins at 9:00 or 9:30 am (depending on the season) and takes about 4.5 hours.
  • The price is $90 for adults and includes snorkeling gear, kayak equipment, snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic after snorkeling).

Truman Little White House: The Truman Little White House is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Tours cost $24.67 (or $22.20 when bought online) and are offered every 20 minutes from 9:30 am- 4:00 pm (museum closes at 4:30 pm). For up to date information visit the museum’s website .

Sunset Celebration: The Mallory Square Sunset Celebration begins two hours before sunset. It features performers, artists and food vendors.

Information was updated January 2022, but can change without notice. Please confirm directly with service providers.

Key West Travel Guide

It’s the ultimate “come as you are” destination—with a fierce independence streak. The Conch Republic throws its deeply tanned arms around all travelers, and before long you’ll be sipping slushy cocktails on Duval Street and toasting sunsets that inspire lyrics set to steel drums. But this isn’t Vegas with candy-colored houses. Closer to Cuba than Miami, it’s rich in culture as well as world-class diving and fishing in crystal-clear water.

1. Mallory Square

Things to do in Key West florida Mallory Square

One of the most popular things to do in Key West is to attend the sunset celebration at Mallory Square. As one of the most popular Key West attractions, Mallory Square is always busy with food vendors and shops lining the waterfront.

Each night a celebration takes place overlooking the Harbor from the waterfront where crowds of tourists and locals alike gather to watch a Key West sunset.

Street performers like jugglers and magicians put on some dazzling shows as crowds form around them. There are street vendors selling local arts and crafts, food stalls, and street musicians all gathering in one place creating a festive atmosphere.

The sunset celebration is a fun place to hang out, but be sure to bring some small bills or change to tip the performers, they work hard for their money.

2. Hydrobikes

Fun things to do in Key West florida Hydrobikes

Key West’s sunsets are certainly gorgeous and you should always find a way to see them each night of your trip. Outside the sunset celebration, another fun way to see a Key West sunset is to hop on a tour with Key West Hydrobikes where you’ll pedal into the harbor on water bikes.

Like everything in Key West, drinks flow freely, so you can even bring two drinks with you to enjoy a toast on the water at sunset. Sunset cruises are popular in Key West, but this is certainly far more original The city has an open drink policy so grab a couple of rum cocktails to put into the drink holders.

  • You can find Key West Hydrobikes at 0 Simonton St, Key West, Fl 33040

3. Key West First Legal Rum Distillery

Visit the Key West Rum Distillery top key west florida attractions

The Key West First Legal Rum Distillery dates back to 1900 when it was Jack’s Saloon. After that, it was turned into a Coca-Cola Bottling center and there is plenty of antiques and memorabilia dating back to the turn of the 20th century in this building.

It’s an excellent tour to learn how the rum is distilled, but it also is a lot of fun to learn a little about Key West history. The rum distillery is definitely one of the most fun we did. Read their story here . It’s a good one!

  • Address: 105 Simonton St, Key West, FL 33040

Create Your Own Cocktail

Things to do in Key West florida Make Mojitos

At the distillery, we had the chance to make an authentic Cuban Mojito and bring their recipe back for everyone to enjoy. We have been to Havana and their mojitos tasted exactly like the classic Cuban Mojito.

When you book this experience, you get to bring home your glass and tools to make your own mojitos at home. Make sure you buy a bottle of rum too, it’s delicious! Check out their website here.

4. Duval Street

Bar hopping on Duval Street in Key West florida

Key West’s main street is Duval Street and chances are you will be spending a lot of time here in downtown key West. Besides shopping during the day, you’ll want to go bar hopping at night.

Key West was made for partying and there is no better place to do that than on Duval Street. Once the sun goes down, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a sober tourist especially downtown in the party district.

attractions key west florida duval street

Duval Street is the main street for nightlife street and barhopping is a way of life when visiting the Keys. Just walking down the street is an adventure. At night people carry their drinks from bar to bar. (I don’t think it’s legal, but that doesn’t stop anyone) as music blares from the clubs.

If you want to join a guided tour to see the top bars and restaurants of Key West while making new friends, check out this fantastic pub crawl tour that stops at five top-rated pubs with a cocktail at each stop . And you will get the T-shirt to boot!

Key west things to do Best Bars in Key West Florida

From upscale wine bars to dive bars, Key West has it all. There are the Key West staples like Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, and the Hard Rock Cafe (Dave and I had to visit both on our first trip).

The Hard Rock Cafe in Key West isn’t your typical Hard Rock. You might not even notice it when you walk by as it is, it is located within a Victorian-style house that blends perfectly with the historic feel of Key West.

According to legend, the ghost of its original owner still haunts the grounds. Margaritaville in Key West is the original of Jimmy Buffets’ popular chain. He lived in Key West for 30 years where he rose from a local street musician to the icon he is today.

A few other suggestions for where to eat in Key West:

5. Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum

Things to do in Key West florida Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum

No visit to Key West would be complete without stopping by the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. From 1931 to 1939 Hemingway called Key West’s old townhome where he wrote such treasures as A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls.

The highlight of visiting the Hemingway House is spying on the Hemingway cats. They are everywhere and each cat is said to be a descendant of the six-toed cats that Hemmingway had as pets. Check out their paws, they really do have six toes!

The Hemmingway house is certainly at the top of the most popular Key West attractions, and even if you aren’t a fan of his writing, it is definitely worth stopping in to see this famous Key West museum.

  • Address: 907 Whitehead St, Key West

6. President Harry S Truman Little White House

What to do in Key West Florida Harry S Truman Little White House

You don’t really think of Key West museums when planning your trip, but the museums here are quite unique. It’s not every day you get to see a former president’s winter escape. The Harry S Truman Little White House of Key West is one of the more popular tourist attractions in Key West.

This was President Truman’s winter White House. This national historic landmark has been used as a retreat for other Presidents as recently as President Clinton. One can understand whey this would be a residence of choice with swaying palm trees shading the quiet retreat in the tropical sun.

  • Address: 111 Front St, Naval Air Station Key West, Fl 33040

7. the Southernmost Point

Things to do in Key West Fl Southernmost Point

It may be touristy, but one of the must-see Key West attractions is the Southernmost Point Bouy. This U.S. National historic landmark is touted as the most southerly part of the United States mainland!

Go early in the morning as the lines are long to take the obligatory selfie at the buoy. It has one of the best ocean views on the island.

The cement marker claims to be the southernmost point of the continental U.S. but in actual fact, there is a more southern location in Key West at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. But with this iconic landmark staking its claim since 1970, it is widely accepted as one of the top Key West attractions and no visit to the island would be complete without a stop at.

  • Address: Whitehead St &, South St, Key West, FL 33040

8. Schooner Sunset Sail

What to do in Key West Fl Schooner Sunset Sail

If a crowd at the sunset celebrations in Mallory Square isn’t your scene, take a quiet sunset cruise on a schooner. Key West has a rich maritime history, so feel like you have stepped back in time while enjoying views of the Florida Keys .

You’ll see the fort, the Sand Key Reef, and Sunset Pier from the deck of one of the finest boats on the schooner fleet.

9. Dry Tortugas National Park

day trips from key west fl dry tortugas

Located (113km) 70 miles from the Florida Keys in the Gulf of Mexico, Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the most remote national parks in the United States. It’s a beautiful day trip with snorkeling opportunities and cocktails as you sail to the remote island.

The Dry Tortugas were used as a fort between 1845 and 1876. Fort Jefferson was a giant military fort used to defend during the Spanish American War. It takes up almost the entire Garden Key. Fort Jefferson is still in tact and you can walk around its grounds.

You can take a day trip out to explore the island, its nature trails, and beautiful sandy beaches and you can even camp overnight on Garden Key.

You can book cruises from Key West to Dry Tortugas and go by ferry or by seaplane .

10. Honest Eco Tour

Key West things to do Key West Eco Tour Florida

For something different, one of the best things to do in Key West is to book a tour with Honest Eco Tours . This full-day tour is a sustainable tour that takes place on the first electric catamaran of its kind in the United States!

It was a full day of snorkeling, kayaking, dolphin spotting, and sightseeing along the coast. They served a full buffet lunch and gave everyone reusable water bottles making every inch of the tour eco-friendly.

If you don’t have time for a full day, this 3-hour tour with Get Your Guide includes a combination of dolphin watching and snorkeling with the only company in the Florida Keys with the prestigious “Dolphin SMART” certification, a national program that protects and promotes the responsible observance of dolphins.

  • Honest Eco Tours is located: Left of Dockmasters Office, 120 Margaret St, Key West, FL 33040, United States

11. Dolphin Watching

things to do in Key West florida Dolphin Watching

200 bottlenose dolphins live in the warm waters off the Florida Keys, and seeing dolphins in Key West is a wonderful experience. These wild dolphins do not have human interaction so you are truly seeing them in their natural habitat. When booking a dolphin or wildlife tour be sure to use a sustainable recognized tour operator like Honest Eco Tours based out of Key West.

We combined a dolphin tour with other water sports including kayaking through a mangrove island of the Wildlife Refuge and snorkeling. For more information visit their website to book the full-day eco-tour.

12. John Pennekamp State Park

Fun things to do in Key West Florida Snorkeling

No trip to Key West would be complete without getting in the water. The clear turquoise waters are calling and with good reason. Did you know that Key West has the only living coral reef in the United States? A lot of people go scuba diving in the Florida Keys as there are plenty of shipwrecks in the area. But if you aren’t a certified scuba diver, snorkeling is good too!

The John Pennekamp State Park has decent coral to spot wildlife in the Keys. If you’ve never been snorkeling before, this might be a good introduction as the waters are calm and shallow but the coral reefs lack color and life. However the Florida Keys are working hard to bring the coral reef system back to life and we saw sea turtles, trumpet fish, and barracuda.

We also encountered jellyfish that were quite stingy, so be prepared. If you are lucky you may see some sharks, but we didn’t.

This tour is a great choice where you get to visit two locations on a high-speed catamaran . It includes beer, wine, and champagne after you are done snorkeling. (Free cancelation within 24 hours of trip)

13. the Key West Wildlife Refuge

Things to do in Key West Florida Sea Kayaking

I didn’t even know that Key West had such an abundant wildlife refuge. This is one of the oldest wildlife refuges in the country established by Teddy Roosevelt in 1908. If you are looking for unique things to do Key West visit the destination at the end of October for Fantasy Fest. The annual 10-day festival has been running since 1979 and has grown to become a huge festival attracting visitors from around the world.

Fantasy Fest is like Mardi Gras on steroids. People parade down the street nightly showing off their body paint and works of art. Live music blares out of the bars lining and vendors and street performers line the sidewalks. Since it is Key West, there’s a lot of alcohol and skin involved too! This is a really fun and festive time to be in Key West.

36. Key West Aquarium – Not For Us

We are not fans of aquariums in general, but we do realize that they play a part in conservation. What we like about the Key West Aquarium is that they shelter sea turtles and shelter them until they can be returned to the sea. However, I don’t like that there is a touch tank.

I know that aquariums say that is a good way to educate children, but I think animals should be left alone. I think that I prefer to either go snorkeling to see sea turtles or the Eco Discovery Center is a good option and the living museum of John Pennekamp State Park is a superb option. Visiting an aquarium is a personal choice, it is just not one of ours. Read more here

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Key West

where to stay in the florida keys

The best time to visit Key West, Florida, depends on what you are looking for in your vacation. Key West has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, but there are some variations throughout the year that might make certain times more appealing than others:

  • Winter (December – February) : This is often considered the best time to visit Key West for weather, as temperatures are mild and pleasant, usually ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-70s degrees Fahrenheit (around 18-24 degrees Celsius). However, this is also peak tourist season, so accommodation prices are higher, and the island can be crowded.
  • Spring (March-May) : Spring is also a popular time to visit. The weather is slightly warmer than winter but still comfortable. This is also the dry season, so you are less likely to encounter rain. Prices start to drop a little bit compared to the winter, but it’s still relatively busy.
  • Summer (June – August) : Summer in Key West can be hot and humid, with temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s degrees Fahrenheit (around 31-34 degrees Celsius). • Fall (September – November) : The fall season continues to be hurricane season, and there can be occasional storms. However, temperatures start to cool down a bit compared to summer. This can also be a more affordable time to visit as it’s considered an off-peak season.

How Many Days Is Enough for Key West

The number of days needed for a trip to Key West, Florida, can vary depending on individual preferences and interests. However, here is a general guideline:

  • One Day : If you’re on a tight schedule, you can still experience a taste of Key West in one day. This will usually involve a walk down Duval Street, a visit to the Southernmost Point Buoy, and perhaps a quick tour of the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. You can end your day with a sunset celebration at Mallory Square.
  • Two to Three Days : With two to three days in Key West, you have a more relaxed pace to explore. In addition to the aforementioned activities, you can visit attractions like the Key West Lighthouse, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, and the Truman Little White House. You also have time to take a boat tour, and go snorkeling. A trip to the nearby Dry Tortugas National Park is also possible, though it will take up a significant portion of one day.
  • Four to Five Days : Spending four to five days in Key West allows you to truly immerse yourself in the laid-back atmosphere of the island. In addition to visiting the main attractions, you can explore the less touristy parts of the island, try a variety of restaurants and bars, take your time shopping, and perhaps even take a fishing trip. This time frame also allows for more flexibility in case of inclement weather affecting outdoor activities.
  • A Week or More : If you plan to stay for a week or longer, you can enjoy Key West at a leisurely pace and even explore the other islands in the Florida Keys. This would give you time for relaxing beach days, and day trips to neighboring Keys.

Greate content! Thanks for writing this article

These are indeed some the options, i can put into my list, thanks for sharing…

Even though I’ve traveled to Ft. Lauderdale almost every year since I was a child, I’ve never made it to Key West! So thanks for the recommendations and extra motivation to add a few days to my next Florida trip so I can finally visit the Keys!

Conch train looks so cute, I would definately have a tour around with that. Unless I find a bicycle rental 🙂

Weekend in Key West: The Perfect 2 or 3 Day Itinerary

Key West is one of the most vibrant and quirky cities in the US, and has the perk of being located in a tropical climate. Therefore, many people choose this island city as their vacation destination each year. There are plenty of fun experiences to be had, and this itinerary for 3 days in Key West will ensure you see the best of everything.

Although Key West is surrounded by water, it is connected to the mainland United States via a series of bridges through the Florida Keys called the Overseas Highway, or Highway 1. The endpoint of Highway 1 can be found at the corner of Fleming Street and Whitehead Street in downtown Key West.

Its unique location is just one thing that sets Key West apart from every other US city. Whether it’s bar hopping, foodie spots, sightseeing, or enjoying the great outdoors, there is something for everyone to enjoy in the “Conch Republic”. Without further ado, here is the perfect itinerary for an unforgettable 3 days in Key West .

3 Days in Key West – Itinerary for First Time Visitors

Weekend in Key West 2 or 3 Day Itinerary Travel Blog

Day 1: Explore Classic Key West

Day one of this Key West itinerary focuses on getting an overview of the city and visiting some of its most famous landmarks.

Arrive into Key West & Rent Bikes

You will likely arrive in Key West by flying into Key West International Airport (EYW) or driving in via Highway 1. If you flew, the airport is only 11 minutes from Duval Street, which is Key West’s famous main drag. You can simply grab an Uber from the airport to your lodging if you don’t rent a car.

Your next step is to rent bikes for the duration of your stay from Key West Bicycles . With the island being only four miles long and two miles wide, a car is not necessary and a bike will be more economical for reaching destinations just outside of walking distance.

If you enjoy guided tours, this guided bike tour is a great introduction to the top attractions.

Southernmost Point Concrete Buoy

No Key West itinerary is complete without a stop at the Southernmost Point Concrete Buoy. Located at the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street, this large buoy marks the Southernmost Point of the Continental United States. While the accuracy of this claim is questionable, other points in the Keys that are further south are not nearly as accessible to the public.

Upon arrival to the big concrete buoy, you will most likely need to wait in line for your photos, unless you arrive first thing in the morning. However, the line moves fast and people are generally very cooperative in helping one another take pictures.

Hemingway Home & Museum

Front of Hemingway House

One of the most essential places to visit in Key West is the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum . This is where Ernest Hemingway lived with his second wife, Pauline, from 1931 until their divorce in 1940. Hemingway wrote some of his most significant works in his studio above the carriage house.

While at the Hemingway House, you’ll likely see many cats roaming about.  If you look at their paws, you may notice that many of them have six toes!  Some of these cats are descendants of a 6-toed cat Hemingway received from a sea captain, who was departing Key West.

This house museum is open every day to walk-ins from 9am to 5pm, and the $16 ticket must be paid in cash. The price includes a 20 to 30-minute guided tour of the house.

Brunch at Blue Heaven

From the Hemingway House, walk four minutes to Blue Heaven , which is one of Key West’s most famous restaurants. Be sure to arrive by 2:00pm to make it in time for the breakfast & lunch menu. There is often a wait since they do not take brunch reservations, but it’s totally worth it.

Key Lime Pie at Blue Heaven Key West

Blue Heaven offers a variety of pancakes and benedicts, with some delicious options being the pineapple pancakes and Key West shrimp benedict. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, but outdoor allows you to eat in a garden-like setting with eclectic art, cats and chickens roaming about, and large tree canopies overhead. Save room for a slice of their signature key lime pie, which is piled high with merengue.

Key West Lighthouse

weekend getaways in Key West Lighthouse

Burn off some of your brunch with a short climb up the Key West Lighthouse , which is just a four-minute walk from Blue Heaven. The current structure was built in 1848 after the original was destroyed in a catastrophic hurricane. It reopened with a woman, Barbara Mabrity, as its Keeper – a highly unusual circumstance at that time.

After climbing 88 steps to the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views over Key West and the surrounding waters of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Tickets cost $17 at the door or $15.40 online, and give you access to the lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters Museum. Visitors are welcome daily from 10am to 4pm.

Check out Duval Street

Duval Street in the evening

One of the most fun things to do in Key West is spending an evening on Duval Street, which is notorious for its party scene. There are plenty of spots to grab dinner, as well as make a night of it with drinks afterwards. Here are two casual and delicious dinner options:

  • D.J.’s Clam Shack : DJ’s Clam Shack was once featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and is famous for their “overstuffed” lobster rolls and conch fritters. Order at the small counter just off Duval Street, and enjoy their mouthwateringly good food on the small back patio.

Bowl at Poke in the Rear 2 or 3 days in Key West Florida itinerary

  • Poké in the Rear : Visit this open-air restaurant behind the Aqua Bar and Night Club for super fresh and delicious poké bowls.

Afterwards, you may want to continue your evening with drinks on Duval Street. The street is lined with bars, but start at Sloppy Joe’s , which is an old standby once frequented by Ernest Hemingway. The drinks are standard, but there is usually live music and always plenty of atmosphere.

Day 2: Cuban Coffee & Sunset Sail

The second of your three days in Key West introduces you to the city’s most spectacular feature: its sunrise and sunset views. You will also get a taste of Key West’s strong Cuban culture.

Sunrise at Higgs Beach

sunrise from pier at Higgs Beach

Sunrises in Key West are absolutely stunning, and the best viewing spot is the Edward B. Knight Pier at Higgs Beach. You will need to get up really early for this, but it’s totally worth it. The sun rises anytime between 6:37am and 7:37am over the course of the year.

This is where you’ll be thankful to have a bike, since you won’t need to rise as early. Higgs Beach is only a five-minute bike ride from Duval, but it’s more like twenty if you walk.

Drink Cuban Coffee

Exterior of Key West Cuban Coffee

Key West has a longstanding Cuban influence, being only 90 miles from Cuba.  Therefore, it’s imperative to try some Cuban coffee and cuisine while you’re in town.  Here are two great choices:

  • Key West Cuban Coffee : This restaurant is located in a tiny space on Duval Street. Behind a small counter will be three ladies working nonstop at the grill and espresso machine. Cuban and Mexican fare is served here, including breakfast burritos, empanadas, and light Cuban coffee.
  • Cuban Coffee Queen : Located in a shaded courtyard right off Duval Street, this outdoor restaurant is close to the action. You could keep things simple with a Cuban coffee or cortado paired with some pan Cubano. There are also more substantial items like Cuban sandwiches on the menu.

Butterfly Conservatory

Step away from Key West’s bustling scene for a moment without even leaving Duval Street. The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory contains hundreds of living butterflies made up of over 50 different species.

In this glass enclosed space, you can wander past tropical plants with colorful blossoms, while the butterflies and over 20 species of exotic birds fly around you.  The conservatory is open every day from 9am to 5pm, and tickets cost $15.

Stop at Rum Bar

For some high-quality cocktails, stop in for a quick drink at the Rum Bar . This small bar is only a four-minute walk down Duval Street from the Butterfly Conservatory. The cocktails are a little pricey, but they are definitely among the best in all of Key West.

The Pusser’s Rum painkiller in particular is a must; especially when consumed while people watching on the bar’s front porch.

Sunset Sail

sailboat on the horizon during sunset

Rest up before heading back out for one of the best tours in Key West: a sunset sail. Like sunrises, sunsets in Key West are like no other, and they are especially spectacular to view from the water.

There are many different boat charter companies to choose from, and Danger Charters is among the best. Their sunset sail is two hours long and limited to twenty-five guests.

As the sun lowers onto the horizon and the sky turns brilliant shades of orange and pink, the crew serves wine and beer tastings paired with hors d’oeuvres. The atmosphere is relaxed and the views from the sailboat could not be any more magical.

Schooner Wharf Bar

If hors d’oeuvres during the sunset sail didn’t fill you up, a great next stop is Schooner Wharf Bar. This bar and grille is only a ten-minute walk or five-minute bike ride from Opal Key Resort & Marina, where the sailboat drops you off.

Schooner Wharf Bar sits waterside along the Key West Historic Seaport.  This restaurant isn’t fancy at all, with its simple wood structure and “patio seating” made up of tables and plastic chairs on top of gravel.  However, that’s part of its charm as you sip a cocktail and snack on some tuna nachos or fried shrimp.

Day 3: Last Day in Key West

Breakfast at glazed donuts.

Glazed Donuts is a Key West favorite due to its drool-worthy donuts baked Wednesday through Sunday of each week. The donuts are by no means skimpy and the dough has just the right amount of chew. They come in fun flavors like Cuban coffee, blueberry cheesecake, key lime pie, and seasonal varieties.

Arrive as early as possible, or be prepared to wait in a line that sometimes extends down the sidewalk. The shop is open until 1pm unless it sells out, and you won’t want to miss out on the best flavors.

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park key west weekend getaway

Spend some time outdoors at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, which is located in downtown Key West, covers 54 acres, and has a beach and fort worth exploring. The fee to enter the park is $2.50 for walkers and bikers and $6 if you are parking a car.

While Key West is not a huge beach destination, this one is definitely worth a visit.  It offers beautiful scenery with its white sand and turquoise water that is popular for swimming.  There are chair and umbrella rentals available, or you can simply grab a picnic table and enjoy the view for a bit.

If you’d like to do some more exploring, check out Fort Taylor, which was built before the Civil War to defend the nation’s southeastern coast.  The fort was used in the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII and the Cuban Missile Crisis, though it was never fired upon.

This state park also has the continental US’s southernmost hiking trails, including the Tropical Hammock Trail and Fort View nature trail.

Truman Little White House

Truman Little White House

The Truman Little White House is just a three-minute bike ride from Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, so it’s the perfect next stop on this Key West itinerary. While this house was used intermittently by six American presidents, its most significant usage was during Harry Truman’s presidency. He used the Little White House as his winter home, and spent about 175 days of his presidency here.

Tickets do not come cheap at $22.52 ($20.27 online), but a tour here allows you to see why Truman saw this as a retreat.  In this setting, he also would have contemplated issues surrounding post WWII foreign policy and the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement.

Kermit’s Key Lime Pie

Bike or walk .3 miles from the Truman Little White House to Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe on Front Street. This local establishment makes many lists for having one of the best key lime pies in Key West .

In addition to traditional pie, this little shop has an assortment of key lime treats that celebrate this flavor. A popular choice is chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick that you can nibble while walking around town. Just remember napkins for when the chocolate starts to melt in the tropical heat and humidity.

Mallory Square

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

In case you couldn’t already tell, the sunset is a big deal in Key West; so much so that there is a nightly Sunset Celebration in Mallory Square.  This is something you should experience at least once during your stay, and it’s just a two-minute walk from Kermit’s.

The celebration begins about two hours before sunset when local vendors and street performers gather for a large party in the square. There are magicians, psychics, and food stalls to name just a few, and they build anticipation for the orange glow of the sun to lower over Sunset Key.

Dinner at Latitudes

Water view from Latitudes

Top off your last night in Key West with an incredibly romantic and memorable experience: dinner at Latitudes . As this fine dining restaurant is located on Sunset Key, you will need to head back to the Opal Key Resort and Marina to catch the ferry. This is free to anyone with a reservation at Latitudes.

Be sure to make reservations at least one month in advance, if not more, as dinner here is very popular. However, it’s worth the hype to eat right on the water with your toes in the sand. Plus, they offer a sophisticated menu with plenty of fresh seafood dishes, as well as an excellent wine list. Dinner at Latitudes is guaranteed to end your Key West itinerary on a high note.

Key West Travel Tips

  • Getting There: There are several ways to reach Key West. You fly into Key West International Airport . Miami is about 165 miles (or 266 kilometers) driving distance so you can also fly into Miami and rent a car or take a bus from Miami . If time is short, you can also visit Key West on a guided day trip from Miami .
  • Getting Around: Renting a car is not recommended due to Key West’s congested traffic and limited parking spots. The island is only 2×4 miles, and the best sights are easily reachable via biking or walking. If you enjoy guided tours, you join a trolley hop-on hop-off tour or a conch train tour .
  • Weather: Key West generally has pleasant weather year-round. High season is between December and February, and brings crowds and high prices; September through November is hurricane season, making this the least ideal time to travel. April is ideal, as the crowds have tapered off and the sweltering summer heat hasn’t set in yet.
  • Where to Stay in Key West: If it’s your first time visiting Key West, your itinerary will likely center around Duval Street. Therefore, it’s best to stay in close vicinity of that main stretch. Old Town Garden Villas is just one block from Duval, and has an adorable courtyard with a small dipping pool.

You are now all set with the perfect 2 or 3 days in Key West itinerary. Be prepared for the best sunsets you’ve ever seen in this eternally festive, yet laid back atmosphere. Just remember to pace yourself and keep an open mind to all the quirks this city has to offer.

You've made it to the end! Closer to Cuba than Miami, Key West is known for its nightly sunset celebrations, party atmosphere and laissez-faire vibe, but it's really so much more.

If you're a writer or bookworm, you'll certainly want to make plans to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where you should keep an eye out for the famous six-toed cats. Then wander through Key West's Bahama Village, a 12-block area of historic homes and restaurants.

Consider a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, where you'll find some hidden gems . The island, accessible by boat or seaplane, is popular for snorkeling and feeling like you're on your own private island, not to mention touring the Civil War–era fort.

Best beach: Fort Zachary Taylor Beach—or Fort Zach, as locals call it—predates the Civil War and boasts the island's very best sandy stretch.

Where to eat: No visit to Key West is complete without a meal at Blue Heaven, where you can dine with wandering roosters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or snag a spot on the tiny balcony at Santiago's Bodega for tapas and flowing wine.

Where to stay: The boutique Gardens Hotel , the adults-only Kimpton Hotels Ridley House  or the new Capitana Key West , to name a few. Wherever you stay, you're sure to find your place in Key West, and it's likely you'll follow so many others' lead and start planning your return visit before you even leave.

Between the Keys and Miami? Not much. Key Biscayne is just over a bridge across from Miami (and is it part of the city of Miami?) but might work for you.

Or why not somewhere else in the Keys? Such as Marathon, Islamorada, or Key Largo ? Because once you are out of the Keys you are almost in Miami. Take a look at the Florida Keys forum vs just Key West and you will see more info on the Keys. So much more to explore in the Keys than just Key West.

Just FYI, It’s St. Pete. No “S” on the end.

I would spend the extra night in The Keys or Miami. There’s not much in between of interest to visitors.

Travel Tips For A Great Florida Trip

Traveling in Florida can be a delightful experience with its diverse attractions, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant culture. Outdoor fun seems to be the theme of most Florida excursions. Mother Nature is our best asset in Florida, but she can be brutal if you are not prepared for her.

Here are some tips to enhance your trip:

  • Weather Awareness

Florida’s weather can be unpredictable, with sudden rain showers and high temperatures. Pack travel-size sunscreen , a hat , and Florida lightweight clothing . Be prepared for afternoon rain showers, especially in the summer. Packing a small umbrella is optional.

  • Theme Park Planning

If visiting popular theme parks like Disney World or Universal Studios, plan your days, and consider purchasing tickets in advance to save time. Arrive early to beat the crowds, and take advantage of FastPass or Express Pass options. Parks are generally very crowded. Make certain children have instructions should they get separated from parents.

  • Wildlife Caution

Florida is home to diverse wildlife. Be cautious around bodies of water for alligators, observe manatee zones, and be aware of nesting sea turtles on beaches during specific seasons. If you are camping, a wildlife repellent might be helpful.

The most sought after wildlife viewing in Florida is that of alligators. We have a complete guide for observing alligators in Florida .

  • Explore Beyond the Theme Parks

While theme parks are popular, explore the state’s natural beauty. Visit state parks, beaches , and nature reserves for a taste of Florida’s unique ecosystems.

  • Mosquito Protection

Mosquitoes can be prevalent, especially in humid months and around standing water. Bring insect repellent and consider lightweight long sleeves and pants, particularly during dawn and dusk. Children are most vulnerable and a skin repellent after dusk is suggested.

  • Hurricane Preparedness

Traveling during hurricane season (June – November), stay informed about weather forecasts and have a plan in case of evacuation. While hurricanes at any given location are rare, they can occur with plenty of warning. They don’t sneak up on you! Travel insurance may provide added peace of mind for the unlikely chance your vacation could be shortened.

  • Children and Travel

There is no better sight in the world than seeing the smile on your children’s faces as they walk into their first surf on a Florida beach or see a real-life Mickey Mouse. Florida offers both. On the other hand, one of the worst things is seeing children with tears in their eyes because our planning was faulty. Here are a few suggestions:

  • While Florida is known as the sunshine state, the occasional rain shower may drive you inside. Pack a  small game or two for the kids .
  • Make sure you have sandals or  beach footwear for kids . Shells are sharp.
  • Frequently apply  safe sunscreen on children . A well-planned family vacation can be ruined by sunburnt children on the first day. We live here and know!
  • Always point out a safe place for kids if they get lost or just turned around in unfamiliar areas. A lifeguard stand, a food stand, a street sign – anything they can use as a reference to go to to be found by you.
  • Driving Considerations

Florida is a big state, and driving is a common way to explore. Be prepared for tolls on highways, particularly around major cities. Follow traffic laws, and be aware of pedestrians, golf carts and cyclists that are common in many Florida communities.

  • Water Activities Safety

If engaging in water activities, adhere to safety guidelines. Be cautious of strong currents and always wear  appropriate safety gear , especially when boating or snorkeling.

Remember to plan ahead, stay hydrated, and embrace the laid-back atmosphere of the Sunshine State. Whether you’re exploring cities, theme parks, beaches or natural wonders, Florida has something for every traveler of all ages.
