Mekong Delta

Tour snapshot

5 days for a package tour from Ho Chi Minh City to Cambodia is not too long for a journey to explore two countries. Nonetheless, it will be enough to gain some ideas about a quite fast-developing city like Ho Chi Minh City, gently touch the charms of the Mekong Delta – a water area in southern Vietnam, learn a part of the Vietnam’s history at Cu Chi Tunnels, and get deep insights into the painful bloody rule of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia.

Price & Bookings

Ho chi minh arrival - cu chi tunnel half day.

After your flight will land at Tan Son Nhat Airport, you will meet us, be picked up and driven to your hotel. Please note that early check-in is not guaranteed; instead, it is subject to availability of the rooms at the hotel. Spend your time at leisure.

1:00PM, the bus takes you from the TNK Travel office – 220 De Tham Street to Cu Chi Tunnels. It will be an approximately 1.5 hour drive to arrive in the site of Cu Chi Tunnels. Before penetrating deep into the tunnels system, you get a chance to watch a documentary film about the history of this site as well as the hardships inhabitants suffered during the wartime. When you directly crawl through tunnels and see something inside, e.g. hospitals, weapon factory, kitchens, it is the moment you understand why people call it an incredible underground village.

One special thing about Cu Chi Tunnels, which makes it a bizarre zone in the world is that this 250-km system was completely made by hand and simple tools. It is possible to state that the site is the proof of the Vietnamese people’s resilience, smartness, and creativeness.

Another activity in this afternoon trip is to taste luscious manioc, which is allegedly a food staple of the Vietnamese guerillas in Cu Chi during the period of war. For those who love shooting games, firing a real AK47 or a real MK16 at the shooting range is a plus point of the itinerary. But if you do not like doing that, just relax before traveling back by bus to the TNK Travel office. Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City around 6:00PM. Have a good night’s rest in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ho Chi Minh City – Phnom Penh (B)

Savor breakfast at the hotel. Then, depart for Phnom Penh by tourist bus with fixed schedule. Stop for lunch en route (pay for yourself).

Around at 1:30PM, the bus arrives at a bus station in Phnom Penh. Then, you are transferred to your hotel for check-in. Spend your time at leisure or exploring Phnom Penh City by yourself. Our recommendations are Central Market and Wat Phnom. You will pay for your dinner and then stay overnight at the hotel.

Phnom Penh – Ho Chi Minh City (B)

You are served with a breakfast at the hotel before going on a morning trip to the Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda. From the outside, the palace looks like a stunning island emerging from manicured gardens. This gorgeous building is referred to as the King’s residence and a place for court ceremony, for which it is also viewed as a symbol of the Kingdom. Entwined with the Royal Palace is Wat Preah Keo Morokat - the 'Silver Pagoda', where the King meets monks and royal ceremonies take place. Furthermore, the pagoda is also the home of valuable historical objects, e.g. the ‘Emerald Buddha’.

A visit to Tuol Sleng Prison Museum and ‘Killing Fields’ of Choeung Ek will enable you to understand a part of the Cambodia’s history and the painful bloody rule of the Khmer Rouge. As for Tuol Sleng Prison Museum, do you believe that there were once up to approximately 20,000 people imprisoned there? In fact, nobody knows about the real number, but the place is considered as a nightmare for each Cambodian. The site had used to be a former secondary school; however, it became Security Prison 21 (S-21) as well as one of about 150 brutal torture and execution centers established by the Khmer Rouge later. Meanwhile, Killing Fields’ of Choeung Ek also causes a fright for you as you peer down at countless skulls and bones of humans. It is where the Khmer Rouge regime inhumanely killed over one million innocent people throughout its control of the country between 1975 to 1979.

You are free to explore Street 240, Russian Market by yourself. Have lunch on your account. At 2:30PM take the bus to return to Ho Chi Minh City. At 8:00PM – 9:00PM arrive in Ho Chi Minh City. Spend overnight in the city.

Ho Chi Minh City – Mekong Delta – Water Puppet show and dinner cruise (B/L/D)

Eat breakfast at the hotel. At 8:00AM get picked up at 220 De Tham Street and commence the day trip to explore charms of the Mekong Delta – a wet area with many exciting things about culture and lifestyle of locals. Travel by bus along the National Highway, whose sides are green rice fields, providing a good backdrop for your drive.

Upon arrival in My Tho City, what to visit first is Vinh Trang Pagoda, which is taken into account as the most elegant pagoda in the Mekong Delta. Erected in 1849, Vinh Trang is specially in the shape of “Nation” letter of Chinese characters and comprises four zones: the front, the main zone, the back, and the zone for worship. Entrance to the gate of the pagoda immediately throws a new feeling into your mind that its architecture is quite special. Yes, it appears as an elegant structure in the blending style of Asian and European architecture with the atmosphere of purity and solemnity.

It is widely known that the Mekong Delta is the place of rivers, channels, and canals; hence, moving on water by boat is never put out of your itinerary. You will enjoy a boat ride along the river, which entitles you to witness stilt houses, fishing villages, and fruit orchards. That leisurely ride is indeed an approach to the local life as well as the typical perspective of a water area in Vietnam.

Head toward Tortoise islet. You are served with a lunch in a local orchard garden before taking a boat ride to An Khanh tourist attraction – another fascinating place to experience. What to do afterwards is to move on a hand-rowed sampan through narrow canals to feel cool from light breezes in the air and feel peace and tranquility under the shadow of the water coconut trees. Plus points of the visit to An Khanh tourist attraction are to taste seasonal fruit and have a sip of honey tea while getting a sense of “Southern Vietnamese folk music”, performed by the local people.

Additionally, pay a visit to a family business where you can obtain more understanding of the idyllic water area, sample fragrant coconut candy, and see the pastoral scenery as well as pastoral life while rambling through the local village and a fruit orchard. Meet the bus and travel back to Ho Chi Minh City.

At 5:30PM arrive in Ho Chi Minh city. At 6:30PM enjoy water puppet show – a legendary traditional Vietnamese form of art, helping you visualizing the idyllic life of the countryside in Vietnam. Have dinner on Saigon river cruise. It is exciting to view the perspective of Saigon at night from the cruise while savoring culinary delights of the local region.

Ho Chi Minh City tour half day – transfer to the airport (B/L)

Eat breakfast at the hotel and then check out. At 8:00AM, the bus comes to pick you up and takes you to Independence Palace for the first visit. Independence Palace, also namely Reunification Palace was erected on the site of the former Norodom Palace and allegedly the fusion of Oriental rituals & characteristics and modern elements. Nowadays, the building has become one of the must-visit landmarks in any Ho Chi Minh City tour. In the past, this place was where to witness the end of the Vietnam War; since then it has been a symbol of the country’s independence.

Have lunch at a local restaurant.

Spend your leisure time until you are driven to Tan Son Nhat airport for the next departure. End the Vietnam package tour.

3 Ways to Get from Vietnam to Cambodia (2024/2025): By Boat, By Plane, By Road

Vietnam and Cambodia are neighboring countries, and a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia is one of the popular combos in Southeast Asia.

To cross the border from Vietnam to Cambodia, broadly speaking, you can choose from three ways: by boat, by plane, or by road. No international trains are available between these two countries yet.

No matter which way you choose, departing from Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is the most popular option for time-saving and cost-saving . The most famous and most-used arrival cities in Cambodia are Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

  • Vietnam to Cambodia by Boat
  • Vietnam to Cambodia by Flight
  • Vietnam to Cambodia by Road
  • Visa Requirements

1. Vietnam to Cambodia by Boat

Traveling by boat is a wonderful way to journey from Vietnam to Cambodia and discover the enchanting Mekong River. You have the option of taking a 5-hour ferry or embarking on a 3–7-day international cruise.

1) Ferries from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh

  • Cost: between US$25 and US$65
  • Duration: 5 hours

The ferry to Phnom Penh leaves from Chau Doc every morning around 7:30. Therefore, we suggest arriving in Chau Doc a day early to spend the night there before catching the ferry.

To avoid a long and tiring 6-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City to Chau Doc, we recommend staying overnight in Can Tho on the way. This will break up your journey and give you a chance to rest and see the largest floating market in Vietnam.

You can check Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta Tours for inspiration or contact us .

2) Vietnam to Cambodia by Mekong Cruise

Cruising the Mekong River could be the icing on the cake for your Vietnam and Cambodia trip. Watch sunrises/sunsets with crafted cocktails, discover local villages and taste fresh fruits in the orchard, board a sampan to explore the fascinating Cai Rang floating market, and enjoy the stunning scenery at a relaxing riverboat pace...

You have two options for the cruise:

  • The 3-night, 4-day trip between Ho Chi Minh and Phnom Penh
  • The 7-night, 8-day trip between Ho Chi Minh and Siem Reap

Which cruise company to choose? The Mekong Princess is strongly recommended . It departs every Thursday from Saigon or Siem Reap alternative.

  • It departs directly from Saigon Port (just about 5 minute's transfer from the city center). Most other cruises will depart from My Tho/ Can Tho City, which is about 3 hours' drive from Ho Chi Minh.
  • With just 14 rooms, you could enjoy more private service and stunning views as all rooms have views of the river.
  • It is designed with French Colonial style mixed with Vietnam and Khmer culture to bring you an unforgettable experience.

The price for the route between Ho Chi Minh and Siem Reap is from US$1500 per person based on twin share or from US$2000 based on single occupancy. The cruise between Ho Chi Minh and Phnom Penh costs less by US$200-300 per person for the whole journey. Contact us for the exact schedule and price details.

2. Vietnam to Cambodia by Plane

Flying from Vietnam to Cambodia is the fastest and most convenient way. It takes around 2 hours from Hanoi to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, 1 hour from Ho Chi Minh, and 1.5 hours from Danang.

The airfare starts from US$90 for an economy-class ticket in the low season (July to September). The price might double in the peak season (October to March).

Confused about choosing the best transportation connections? Just share your interests and requirements with us. Our travel consultant will tailor-make an itinerary for you.

3. Vietnam to Cambodia by Road

The slowest option is to travel overland. Vietnam shares seven border crossings with Cambodia and many provide a Visa on Arrival service.

The most popular crossing is Moc Bai, Vietnam – Bavet, Cambodia . By bus, you need at least 6½ hours by land: from Ho Chi Minh it's 2 hours to Moc Bai and then around 4½ hours on to Phnom Penh including the border crossing (about 1 hour).

Taking a private transfer is the most comfortable and convenient option , costing from US$300 per car, and it's a bit quicker too. Contact us for more info.

Buses are the most affordable, costing US$20–35. When passing through immigration, you'll need to get off the bus (change bus) and carry/wheel all your luggage with you.

Visa Requirements to Enter Cambodia

A Visa on Arrival is an available option at most border crossings to Cambodia. The cost is around US$35 per person. To get the visa, you should prepare and bring 2 passport-sized photos , or you could pay an additional US$2–5 if you don't have the photos. Based on our experience, some officials might take an additional service charge (US$1–10) when you enter Cambodia using a Visa on Arrival.

If you would like to avoid this hassle, you can apply for an e-visa in advance online (single entry with a maximum stay of 30 days).

When should you travel to Cambodia?

Cambodia’s climate is divided into two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season.

The ideal time to travel to Cambodia is the period from November to February next year, at this time the weather is mild, sunny, not too hot and less rainy. In addition, every April is the Khmer New Year, so there are many festivals in Cambodia. From mid-November every year, there is a water procession and boat racing festival.

If you cannot stand the heat or do not have good physical strength, you should avoid April and May, which are the hottest months in Cambodia when the temperature of the day is often at 40 degrees Celsius. Especially, if you want to go this time, it should be noted to bring a hat, umbrella and full sunscreen, prepare long clothes to have the best tour.

From May to October is the rainy season in Cambodia, especially in September and October. You should avoid going to Cambodia this season if you don’t want the trip to be a rest at the hotel.

How to Go from Vietnam to Cambodia border, routes & visas

There are a number of border crossings between Vietnam and Cambodia.   The main Vietnam to Cambodia border crossing is Moc Bai to Bavet and the route from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh by bus is an easy 6-hour (including immigration) trip.   Of course, there are many other land border crossings to Cambodia from Vietnam, and visas on arrival are available at most of them.  The other type of border crossing from Vietnam to Cambodia is the water crossing – the Mekong River runs from the north to the south of Cambodia before it ends in Vietnam.  The fastest water crossing from Vietnam to Cambodia is from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh.

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN COMPENSATED AND AFFILIATE LINKS MORE INFORMATION IN  OUR DISCLAIMER

How to get from Vietnam to Cambodia

The Vietnam to Cambodia border crossing and the route that you select between Vietnam and Cambodia depends on where you start from and where you plan to go to.  The most popular route from Vietnam to Cambodia is from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  This is a land border crossing and is how to go from Vietnam to Cambodia if you don’t want a river border crossing.

TOP TRANSPORT TIP

Bus Icon

Ho Chi Minh > Phnom Penh

The easiest and best bus route runs between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh. This is the best way to go from Vietnam to Cambodia.

However, there is the popular route on the Mekong River. The public-ticketed fast and slower boats go from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh.   This is a great route, we’ve done it in both directions, most recently in 2023 and I wrote about it here.

You can also book a private river transfer from Can Tho to Phnom Penh ( check prices here ), although this is expensive and there are cheaper options available, they can’t currently be booked online.

Border Crossings between Vietnam and Cambodia

The border point that use to cross between Cambodia from Vietnam obviously depends on the route that you take. However, since most of the transport options (both land and river border crossings) between Vietnam and Cambodia are through-ticketed, you don’t need to worry too much about knowing which border crossing point it is.  However, here are the main crossings.

  • Moc Bai (Vietnam) to Bavet – (Cambodia) – the main border crossing
  • Ting Bien (Vietnam) to Phnom Den (Cambodia)
  • Ha Tien (Vietnam) to Prek Chakille (Cambodia)
  • Vinh Xuong (Vietnam) to Kaam Samnor (Cambodia)

You can also see the full map of the Cambodia-Vietnam border crossings here.

Visa Requirements for Cambodia

Visa on arrival is available at most (if not all) land and river crossings.  Payment for these visas is in cash, you can pay in US dollars or Vietnamese Dong.  The cost of the visa (there may some local variations) is around US$36.  If you prefer to arrange your visas in advance, an online eVisa for Cambodia has been available since 2006 and is directly from the Cambodian Government. The official site from the Cambodian Government for eVisa is here.

Main Routes from Vietnam to Cambodia

The main routes between Vietnam and Cambodia are from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to the Cambodian cities of Phnom Penh. Chau Doc to Phnom Penh

The most popular boat from Vietnam to Cambodia is the route from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh.   This route from Vietnam to Cambodia by boat takes you up the mighty River Mekong.  There is no Chau Doc to Phnom Penh ferry as such, but there are several boats that ply this route, which leave Chau Doc at 07:00 and 07:30 each morning.  You can also arrange a private boat for this trip – which can leave at any time.

Want to know what this boat trip is like? I wrote about going from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh here.

Vietnam to Cambodia by boat on this route takes 5 – 5.5 hours and you can check the availability of seats and book your tickets here

Tuktuk in Phnom Penh

Hanoi to Siem Reap

If you’re going from Hanoi to Siem Reap prepare yourself for a long journey unless you take a direct flight, which is the most expensive way to go to Siem Reap from Hanoi.

Flights from Hanoi to Siem Reap

Direct flights are in the afternoon and you can check prices and times here.

Ground Transport from Hanoi to Siem Reap

You will first need to travel from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.  You can do this on a train or a bus ( check details here ).

Once in Ho Chi Minh City, follow the directions as detailed earlier in this post – or check bus times here.

Phu Quoc to Phnom Penh

To go from Phu Quoc Island to Phnom Penh there are two options.  First, you can fly , but you will be routed through either Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City.  The shortest route option is just under 5 hours.

The second option is to go from Phu Quoc to Ha Tien, from Ha Tien to Chau Doc, and from Chau Doc up the Mekong River to Phnom Penh . This is easy, some of it can be booked online, although not all of it.  This is not a single-day trip, but you do get to see a bit of Vietnam and Cambodia.  First, you need to take a ferry from Phu Quoc to Ha Tien, then a bus from Ha Tien to Chau Doc.  Then you can take the boat up the Mekong from Chau Doc right into the riverfront at Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  The Vietnam Cambodia border crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia is undertaken on a river trip and is very simple.

Here’s how to take this route.

Phu Quoc to Ha Tien

The Phu Quoc to Ha Tien route is easy.     Take a ferry from the island of Phu Quoc, fast ferries leave from Phu Quoc Bai Vong Port to Ha Tien. Check details and book now

If you’re looking to go the other way – here’s how to GET to Phu Quoc – from Cambodia, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Ferries leave Phu Quoc starting at 07:10 and take around 2 hours and there are up to 7 crossings a day.

Phu Quoc to Ha Tien Ferry Times

  • 08:00 > Check Availability and book now

  • 15:30> Check Availability and book now

The ferry from Phu Quoc to Ha Tien arrives in the port of Ha Tien, which is just a short walk from where you can catch a bus to Chau Doc.  It’s not possible to book this part of the trip online.  This is a local bus, it’s unlikely to be air-conditioned, and the BEST way to get a seat on it (they go about every 2 hours until early evening) is to go to the Oasis Bar in Ha Tien.

The Oasis Bar (as well as doing amazing bacon sandwiches with real HP Sauce!) is the best place to start if going from Ha Tien to Chau Doc.  See the map of Ha Tien port and buses coming up next.  The Oasis Bar can be found across the river mouth from the Ha Tien ferry port.

Ha Tien Ferry and Oasis Bar Map

You can also see this map of Ha Tien here

Ha Tien to Chau Doc

The Ha Tien to Chau Doc bus is a local one. It takes around 3 hours to go from Ha Tien to Chau Doc.   The easiest way to do this is to go to the Oasis Bar and book your ticket from there.

When you arrive in Chau Doc you’ll want to have somewhere booked to stay.  There are plenty of places to stay here.

The boats from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh leave in the morning and it’s usually a relatively early start, so you’ll want to stay somewhere close. If you want to be really close, then stay at the Victoria Hotel which is a really nice hotel and is where the boat leaves from.  A more budget option is the Paris Hotel Chau Doc which is a great budget hotel and only a couple of minutes from the ferry dock.

Boats from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh

Boats from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh take about 5 hours, including the border crossing, which is done as the boat pulls up to the immigration station mid-journey.

I wrote about this journey – going from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh.

You can book the boat online, and this boat includes a guide on the boat, not to explain what you’re seeing, but to ensure that you and your passport get stamped out of Vietnam and into Cambodia.

Boats arriving at Phnom Penh

We also took this boat in 2023 in the opposite direction ( Phnom Penh to Chau Doc ) and booked online.

We will be in Cambodia with our one month tourist visa. We were hoping to cross into Vietnam, probably from Phnom Penh to Chau Do or possibly Kep to Ha Tien to get another visa so we can spend more than the month in Cambodia.

I tried the link to the ferry timetables for Phnom Penh to Chau Doc with a variety of dates between now and 9 November and it seems the ferries see not running.

Do you know if that is the case?

tour to cambodia from ho chi minh city

Hi Margaret, its probably a little early, they usually add the boats tickets a bit closer to the time, I would check closer to the time.

hi Anna, the best way is to contact the boat companies directly and ask where they are able to stop. Much will depend on the time of year you are traveling (and therefore the level of the water in the river). https://hangchautourist.vn/?p=34&lang=en Should be a good start. Best of luck and let me know how you get on! Sarah

Hello Do you know if the land border at Moc Bai offers to take passport photos if you don’t have them? I’ve read you can get them for around $2USD in airports. Was curious if it’s the same on land. Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately land borders tend not to have facilities like that, I’m not aware of passport photo possibilities. It will be easy to find a passport photo shop in Hanoi, HCMC or one of the other big cities though.

SO much great information! Thanks! I have a question. We have plans to fly from HCMC to Siem Reap and the fly back to Da Nang. I found out today that Viet Nam does not offer Multiple Entry Visas any more! So if we are only going to be in Cambodia for 3 days, how do get a visa to re-enter Viet Nam in so short a time?

The safest way to do that is to apply at your local embassy for a multi-entry visa, they may also be able to confirm if you can apply for an evisa, which are available to citizens of around 25 countries.. Evisas are only valid for one entry.

Hello, Thank you for your article. I would like to ask you, few questions. 1. Is it possible to cross the Moc Bai border from Vietnam to Cambodia, with a Cambodian evisa? 2. If not, it is possible to make a Cambodian visa on arrival? 3. If yes, how long does it take to make it? How much does it cost?

Hello there Mehdi – yes you can use the evisa at MocBai ( https://www.evisa.gov.kh/information/port_entry/3 ) < details of which ports/entries it can be used at here. In terms of visa on arrival, also possible, its usually US$30-40 (ish) payable in US dollars (it seems to change) - I always budget for US$50 and feel happy when its less, and don't rely on there being an ATM at any border crossing. There is usually a "fee" to pay as well to process the visa. It usually takes 10-15 minutes to create.

Unfortunately, you have not covered all options and of course the one I want is one you have not covered. There is a land border crossing at Ha Tien for people travelling to Kep Beach, which is where I wish to go from. Can Tho.

I’d love to hear how it goes Dianne

Hi Dianne, did you end up doing this land border crossing. I will be going this way in mid November. Just wanted any insight.

I am travelling to Vietnam and then onto Cambodia then back Vietnam to fly back to UK in Feb 24 I have been told I do not require a visa for Vietnam as you get 45 days tourist visa on arrival. I am spending 12 days in Vietnam then 5 days in Cambodia before retuning to Vietnam airport to fly home, when I return to Vietnam I will get a further 45 day visa is this correct

Hi Stevan – that is my understanding (this changed in August 2023, I will update the post), its for citizens of 13 countries – Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Russia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Belarus. There is no detail that I can find that says that there is a limit on returning to Vietnam within a certain period of time.

Update to everyone who’s interested in: We crossed Ha Tiên border by foot (3 people). I paid 3Mil Dong as for visa on arrival for all of us together (no problem that 1 person paid for all of us).

Then after Visa was approved we needed another visa check. The 1st person no problems but me and the third one had to go to another office and 1 Dollar each was needed to cross the border. 25k Dong/person was fine as well.

No printed or digital image was needed.

Great to hear! I’ll be updating the post with the new visa details

tour to cambodia from ho chi minh city

Do you know the name of the border crossing by boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh? Vietnam Visa is asking what is the intended point of exit.

Its the Song Tien Landport (yes, I know its on the river, but that’s the name of the border point).

tour to cambodia from ho chi minh city

Hi. Great article. We entered Vietnam on 10 Jan and got Visa on arrival as citizens of one of the 13 exempt countries. We left Vietnam for Laos on the 13 Jan. We are now hoping to enter Vietnam from Cambodia at the Ha Tien border on February 29. Am I right in saying that we will just get another entry stamp at Ha Tien allowing us to stay another 45 days? We don’t have to apply for an eVisa to cross a land border? Thanks

Hi Julian, thanks. I don’t believe that there are any restrictions on which border crossings you can use with the visa exemption. Sarah

How to Get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City?

You can get from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to Cambodia by air, water, and land. Depending on your final destination, you may need to change transport options along the way. Moreover, you have various choices on how to get from Ho Chi Minh to Cambodia, from budget-friendly to expensive ones.

tour to cambodia from ho chi minh city

Get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City by Overland

Traveling by bus or van is the most common way of getting overland between ex-Saigon and Cambodian destinations. While bus tickets are cheaper, minivans offer higher comfort.

Get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City by Bus

Buses running from Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) to main Cambodian destinations depart daily, from early morning to around midnight. A journey to Phnom Penh, the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia, usually lasts around seven or eight hours (230km/143mi) on average, traveling directly to Siem Reap takes 13 or 14 hours (460km/285mi).

Ho Chi Minh to Cambodia by Bus

Buses traveling on each route usually go through Moc Bai/Bavet border crossing. You can reserve a seat on a direct bus in the former Saigon, but you can also travel to the border and catch a connection there.

However, the latter option doesn't save you a substantial amount of money. Moreover, you need to start traveling in the morning for a fair chance of getting on board a bus going to Phnom Penh.

The price of the ticket from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh is between 10 and 15 USD, depending on the bus company. Fares for a journey to Siem Reap are around $25.

Buses typically depart from different places in the Vietnamese city, and they have several bus stops in the capital of Cambodia. Some reputable providers with air-conditioned vehicles are Mekong Express, Giant Ibis, Kumho Samco, and The Sinh Tourist. You can book tickets on Baloau and 12Go websites or at travel agencies on Pham Ngu Lao Street in District 1.

Get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City by Minivan

Get to cambodia from ho chi minh by Minivan

A minivan is a slightly costlier, but a far more convenient means of overland transport from HCMC to Phnom Penh. Traveling by this shared vehicle doesn't gain you much time, if at all. But, you may not need to worry about transfers once you arrive in the principal Cambodian city.

Prices range up to $20 per person, and minivans depart from and arrive at designated stops. Giant Ibis and Mekong Express are among the leading providers of the minivan service on this route.

Get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City by Air

For a higher price, you can travel to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City in a shorter time. Note that flying to Phnom Penh won't save you a great deal of time because of the time necessary for airport procedures. But, if your final destination is Siem Reap, you will benefit from a flight in terms of the duration of the journey very much.

Fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh

Flight times for airplanes traveling between Ho Chi Minh (SGN) and Phnom Penh (PHN) are around an hour. Note, however, that you need to arrive approximately three hours before the scheduled flight to get through procedures on time. Also, calculate between 30 minutes and an hour for transfer once you land on (PNH).

Ho Chi Minh City to Cambodia by Air

As you can see, you won't save much time when traveling by air compared to overland transport. However, this option may prove financially worthwhile if you find a ticket for around $40 or $50 in one direction. As for typical fares on this route, they tend to go way over $100.

According to statistics, the most affordable month for flying between SGN and PHN is June, while the least expensive day is Sunday. Some airlines covering this route are Cambodia Angkor Air (usually the most affordable), Qatar Airways, and Vietnam Airlines.

Fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap

Traveling from the former Saigon to Siem Reap by air saves you a lot of time and effort compared to land transport. Flight times are up to 1:30 hours, and transfers are short from the airport (REP) to the city. When flying between these destinations in Vietnam and Cambodia, you are likely to save at least ten hours on the journey.

As for average deals, these usually fluctuate around $150 for a one-way flight. Those also tend to go over $200. However, you may find tickets that cost below 100 USD if you are flexible with dates and monitor prices a few months in advance.

Generally speaking, July and October are the most economical months for flying between HCMC and REP. June and September are the most expensive. Fluctuations between prices on different days are insignificant, but evening flights are significantly costlier than morning and afternoon ones.

Thai Viet Jet Air is typically the most affordable airline on this route, followed by Cambodia Angkor Air and Thai Air Asia. According to statistics, Vietnam Airlines has the highest fares for flights between HCMC, Vietnam, and Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City by water

As the Mekong river flows through Cambodia and Vietnam, water transportation is an option. Right now speed boat and mekong river cruise are the most common ways for tourists.

Get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City by speed boat

To board a vessel, you need a transfer from ex-Saigon to one of the Chau Doc, Cai Be, and Can Tho ports. From there, you sail on the Mekong River to Phnom Penh and catch a connection to Siem Reap when you arrive.

There are various services available, from slow to express, so you have the freedom to choose according to your priorities. The fares commonly start at $10 per passenger for a speed boat but tend to go as high as $50.

On average, the duration of the Mekong River boating on this route by a speed boat is approximately four hours. When you book this means of transport, have in mind that these vessels tend to become crowded.

Ho Chi Minh to Cambodia by Boat

Get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City by cruise

The Mekong River cruises offer a leisure and scenic experience for holidaymakers traveling to the capital of Cambodia and Siem Reap. Depending on the selected cruise, these may last from a few days to over a week. Along the way, you will acquaint yourself with life on the water, floating markets, pre-Angkorian landmarks, and more.

Be aware that the price of the Mekong cruises varies depending on the season and the cruiser. For a three-day cruise from ex-Saigon to Phnom Penh during the low season (May-October), the fares start at $400 per person. During the high tourist season, the price is higher for around 10% or 15%.

Deals for six-day cruises from the Vietnamese city to Siem Reap, a gateway to Angkor Archaeological Park, also vary. These range from around $950 to $1,300 in the low season. From October to March, fares fluctuate between 1,030 USD to 1,500 USD.

Permits for Getting to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City

To enter the Kingdom of Cambodia, most travelers need to possess a 30-day visa, obtainable online and at the entry point. If you apply for a visa on the web, the price is 37 USD. Getting the stamp at the airport or border checkpoint costs 30 USD.

Note that bus drivers may assist you in securing the travel permit at the border. If you wish to get a visa on your own, drivers may leave you some time to obtain the visa. Have in mind, though, that they may not wait for you longer than that.

If you apply online for a Cambodian visa, allow a week to obtain the document, even if advertised times are shorter.

There are many ways to get to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh City. You can choose to visit by air, by bus, by water and by overland. For most travelers, getting between the major city in South Vietnam to the Cambodian capital by bus offers the best value for money.

You can book air or cruise ticket through local tour agency like us. Indochina Tour has been working on traveling in South East Asia for a long time. We have professional teams to help you to make the most of your trip.

Follow My Cheap Yet Epic Trail Across Vietnam And Cambodia By Train, Bus, Boat, And Bike

  • Take a food-centric journey through the bustling city of Hanoi and explore the chaotic Old Quarter for a crash course in all things Vietnam. Don't miss the chance to try the famous Bun Cha Huong Lien, a Hanoi specialty.
  • Escape the touristy Ha Long Bay and opt for a bike tour to Lac Village near the Laotian border. Immerse yourself in a green, mountainous paradise of rice paddies and water buffalo, and indulge in the local culture, karaoke parties, and grilled mystery meats.
  • Find peace and solitude at Tam Thanh Beach, a quiet beach town with friendly locals and minimal tourists. Enjoy delicious seafood, magical sunset walks, and the company of playful dogs and tiny shimmering crabs. Don't miss the chance to explore the Mekong River and visit the indigenous Cham community in Chau Doc before ending the journey in Phnom Penh and exploring the world-famous Angkor Wat in Siem Reap.

The beautiful countries of Southeast Asia tend to take hold of certain travelers' wanderlust and never let go, as each destination's wonders embody deep history and ever-evolving culture and art across an awe-inspiring landscape. Following a quick visit to Thailand with a side trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia, in 2019, I vowed to return. I finally made this dream a reality with an ambition for the epic despite being a budget traveler.

Although the region is known to be quite affordable, it is worth taking some budget notes for Cambodia . This time, I would start from Vietnam's northern capital Hanoi and slowly traverse the entire country by train and bus to its southern border with Cambodia, where I would then make my triumphant return via speedboat up the majestic Mekong River.

Ready to follow in my footsteps? Traveling by train, boat, and bus, discover the adventures on this Vietnam to Cambodia travel itinerary, which features ten unique stops that showcase these countries' culinary, cultural, historic, and natural jewels.

A Bourdain-Inspired Start In Hanoi

The sprawling northern capital of over 5 million inhabitants is best explored by eating one's way across it.

Hanoi, beloved by travelers everywhere , is a perfect crash course in all things Vietnam. Like most first-time visitors, I based myself near the wonderfully chaotic Old Quarter where aging French architecture elegantly blending with Vietnamese verdure serves as the center of the action.

As an avid follower of Anthony Bourdain, the first thing on the list was visiting Bun Cha Huong Lien , where Bourdain and US President Barack Obama shared a meal . Thus began my love of the Hanoi specialty Bun Cha , along with a gluttonous assault on the steamy food stalls lining the hive-like metropolis' cramped side streets and alleys where the vibrant sights, smells, and sounds of Vietnam sunk deep into my skin.

  • Best Bun Cha for ~$1.44: No name or map listing exists; follow this pin to find my favorite Bun Cha on Vong Duc Street. A woman crouched upon the sidewalk in classic Vietnamese fashion slinging raw meat onto a tiny grill means it is the right place.
  • Transport from Noi Bai airport : For ~ $1.85, bright orange bus 86 arrives in Hanoi's Old Quarter within an hour.
  • Where to stay: Cheap accommodation is plentiful; staying near the southern half of Hoan Kiem Lake provided a peaceful escape from the Old Quarter's chaos.

The most budget-friendly flights I found to Hanoi were sometimes below $400 via LAX with China Airlines.

I Skipped Ha Long Bay For Mountains And Rice Fields

Lac village is home to betel-nut-chewing ethnic thais living in traditional stilt houses with bamboo floors.

Ha Long Bay is famous for many reasons , so I initially saw it as a must for a first visit to Vietnam. Aside from its high cost, I was more in the mood to take a path less traveled, so I took this bike tour to a small village near the Laotian border instead.

In no time, I found myself coasting through a green, mountainous paradise of rice paddies and water buffalo before getting an inside look at one of the stilt houses where its elderly, red-mouthed resident offered me some locally cherished betel nut .

During a free-roam hour in the village, I was abruptly roped into a karaoke party (a way of life in Vietnam) where some sang their hearts out, while the rest fervently bombarded me with tiny cups of the local rice wine and a lineup of grilled mystery meats from the table.

  • Location: In the Mai Chau District , 85 miles southwest of Hanoi
  • Tour from Hanoi: $40/person on Tripadvisor
  • Highlights: biking past rice paddies and water buffalo, sociable locals, true cultural immersion

Peaceful Solitude At Tam Thanh Beach

Crabs, friendly pups, geckos, and playing children stand in for tourists in this tiny beach town.

Leaving Hanoi, I was in the mood for a quiet beach escape and happened to stumble upon Tam Thanh Beach , just outside the town of Tam Ky . Along the way, I somewhat regrettably skipped the historic city of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that other travelers I met raved about.

Tourists and grandiose storefronts were not seen at Tam Thanh Beach, only small pockets of locals exercising on the beach or setting off to sail for fishing. After delicious seafood from little family restaurants lining the beach, I would take magical sunset walks accompanied by a friendly pack of dogs as the blue tides swept over hordes of tiny shimmering crabs and I felt a new level of peace.

Getting here from Hanoi was a two-part journey with a stop in Da Nang , which serves as a destination on its own.

  • Bus from Hanoi to Da Nang: ~13–17 hours, sleeper bus options start at $17
  • Train from Da Nang to Tam Ky: ~1.5 hours, starting at $6.87/seat
  • Where to stay: Tam Thanh Natural Beach Resort for ~$15/night was amazing, but availability is inconsistent. Most visitors stay at Tam Thanh Beach Resort & Spa .

Small towns like this are where having a SIM card with data for online translator use is highly valuable.

From Sleepy Sands To Towers In Tuy Hoa

This humble coastal city holds an architectural crown jewel: the nghinh phong tower.

With the only goal of continuing south, I was enticed by Tuy Hoa for having big-city amenities while seeming to maintain the low-key vibe of Tam Ky. I then hopped on a train for a gorgeous ride through Vietnam's countryside of lotus flowers, buffalo, and soaring cranes.

This town felt endearingly "normal" compared to tourist hot spots like Hanoi, aside from the unexpected, sci-fi-esque Nghinh Phong Tower that looms above on beachside walks.

  • Train from Tam Ky to Tuy Hoa: ~6 hours, starting at ~$11/seat
  • Where to stay: Coralina Hotel for ~$10/night (prices vary with the season)
  • Highlights: Award-winning Nghinh Phong Tower , public Tuy Hoa Beach , lavish karaoke spots , and late-night eats at market stalls

A Change Of Pace In The Mountains Of Dalat

Dalat, the picturesque "honeymoon capital" for locals, was a perfect pit stop in my southern sprint.

I became eager to reach the Cambodian chapter of my trip, and bus routes to Hanoi's southern counterpart, Ho Chi Minh City, were the fastest way. Cool, mountainous Dalat was a worthy break from the road and temporary salvation from lowland humidity.

Glimpses of the fairytalelike landscape and its colorful pagodas that make it so popular brought a tinge of regret that I left so soon, but I was able to indulge in the best bowl of pho I had ever had before I was gone.

  • Best pho: Quán Ph Thng -Na
  • Bus from Tuy Hoa to Dalat: The 5-hour ride typically costs $11-$13
  • Where to stay: awesome views from Min Nhit i 2 Hotel for $9/night (as always in Vietnam, prices can double when demand is high)

Return To City Life In Ho Chi Minh City

Also known as saigon, vietnam's most populous city of around 9.3 million offers endless exploration.

The road to Ho Chi Minh City - "the Pearl of the Far East" with tons of things to do - continued. Another 7-hour bus ride later, I was unwittingly tossed into the stampede of nightclub hoppers and fire-breathing street performers that is Bui Vien Street after not researching the neighborhood of my hotel.

Partying backpacker hubs are usually not my kind of scene, but in the end, I found it to be a charming example of when a harmonious balance of tourists and local culture prevails against over-tourism.

  • Bus from Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City: Sleeper buses start as low as $15 for the 7-8 hour trip.
  • Where to stay: Meraki 198 Bui Vien for $13/night
  • Highlights: Historical sites of "the American War" like the Cu Chi Tunnels or War Remnants Museum

Chau Doc To Phnom Penh By Boat

This quiet port town serves as a gateway to the mekong river and indigenous cham culture.

I had little time for exploration in Chau Doc due to my mission on the mighty Mekong, but a brief view into quiet, local life in a small river town felt like enough of a treat. I would certainly encourage anyone in the area to spend time in its biodiverse forests, floating villages, and temples or visit the local Cham community .

Taking in the vast landscapes and riverside villages by boat served as a real-time highlight reel of Southeast Asia that was truly unforgettable, and I can't recommend this route enough.

  • Bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Chau Doc: ~6 hours
  • Where to stay: Dong Bao Hotel An Giang - $11/night
  • Mekong River trip to Phnom Penh: The 5.5-hour ride includes visa processing at the border for $35, just bring a passport and cash.

A tragic history of war and genocide contrasts with the vivaciousness of Cambodia's capital city

After arriving ashore at Phnom Penh's lively riverside, I could simply walk to my hotel and then dive right into tons of restaurants, museums, markets, and the Royal Palace nearby.

As easy as it is to be whisked away by laughs and smiles in the streets, my focus was to learn more about the devastating mid-70s genocide on behalf of the Khmer Rouge, which the country is still recovering from today.

  • Where to stay: RS Guesthouse for ~$10/night (price fluctuations apply here also)
  • What to do: visit the Royal Palace , learn about Cambodia's tragic history at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum or Choeung Ek Genocidal Center
  • What to eat: try Khmer Cuisine at David's Noodle or the renowned Russian Market

Exploring The Famed Angkor Wat In Siem Reap

Millions flock to what guinness world records lists as the world's largest religious structure (162.2 hectares).

If anyone visits Cambodia once, it is likely a foray into the world-famous Angkor Wat found in the rather small city of Siem Reap. The temple complex is just as mesmerizing in real life and truly taking it all in would require multiple visits.

Temple crawling in the scorching Cambodian sun can be very draining, so I felt lucky to always have Pub Street beckoning me over with some shade and a drink.

  • Bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap: ~ 6 hours, as low as $7
  • Outstanding private room w/AC deal: $11/night at Siem Reap Pub Hostel (I've stayed here three times)
  • Angkor Wat passes: 1, 3, or 7-day passes from $37-$72
  • Special gems: Dialogue is a sanctuary brewing some of the best coffee in Cambodia along with great food, a bar, and an overall awesome atmosphere; Kimleng Sang offers one-of-a-kind photography tours

I rented a bicycle from Butterfly Tours for $5/day to better explore Siem Reap and Angkor Wat.

Batty Bamboo Bonanza In Battambang

The voyage ends in battambang, the land of bamboo trains and bat caves.

I arrived in Cambodia's second-biggest city to immediately seek its near-defunct bamboo train operations . Darting past farmlands and flustered buffalo on rickety, wheeled bamboo platforms was an exhilarating reminder of why travel insurance exists, and I would do it every day if I could.

I took a great tour including the famous bat cave that millions of bats pour out of every day at dawn which is nestled just behind the somber Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau . My long road from Hanoi deserved a bang of an ending, and Battambang delivered.

  • Bus from Siem Reap to Battambang: 3 hours with Virak Buntham for $11
  • Where to stay: as low as $7/night at Star Hotel
  • Bamboo train + bat cave + Killing Cave tour: $15/person on Tripadvisor
