2012 Kawasaki VN1700 Voyager Custom

Kawasaki’s VN1700 Voyager Custom is equipped with a long-stroke, liquid cooled, SOHC, 8-valve 1,700 cm3 V-Twin engine that rewards you with a maximum output of 73 PS at 5,000 rpm and a peak torque of 136 Nm at 2,750 rpm. Like the standard version, the Custom model features a fully electronic throttle actuation system which enables the ECU to control the volume of both the fuel (via fuel injectors) and the air (via throttle valves) delivered to the engine.

Other features of the Custom model include a short-style smoked wind deflector, a muscular front cowling, chromed headlamp cover, louvre-style fog lamp covers and generous side Bags. Furthermore, there is also a high-spec audio system which features twin 40 W speakers, radio and compatibility with an iPod, XM tuner or CB radio unit.

Another useful feature offered for the 2012 Kawasaki VN1700 Voyager Custom is the Electronic Cruise Control which can be conveniently controlled from the right handle. The system can be activated between 47 km/h and 137 km/h in 3rd gear or above.

Reflecting the hugely popular American “Bagger” trend, the VN1700 Voyager Custom has cut down sleek and seductive looks while incorporating many exciting luxury cruiser features.

Instrument layout and large round dials give the console a sporty automotive appearance. This image is reinforced by red-coloured rings on the dials, amber backlighting on the dials and instrument and audio LCD screens, and by the font used on the instrumentation.

High-spec audio system with iPod-compatibility

High-spec audio system features twin 40 W speakers, radio and compatibility with an iPod, XM tuner or CB radio unit. Class-leading iPod-compatibility allows the audio display to show the same information available on the iPod screen: song name, playlist, etc all appear on the audio display.

Electronic Cruise Control

Operation of the Electronic Cruise Control is conveniently from the right handle. The system can be activated between 47 km/h and 137 km/h in 3rd gear or above. Operating the brake lever, clutch lever or rear brake pedal causes the Electronic Cruise Control to be disengaged. Closing the throttle beyond the “zero-throttle” position is another instinctive way to disengage.

Twin tapered mufflers extend to the end of the side bags, adding to the bike’s long, flowing lines.

Powerful 1,700 cm3 V-Twin engine

Long-stroke, liquid cooled, SOHC, 8-valve 1,700 cm3 V-Twin engine was designed to deliver high levels of torque. Bore and stroke measure 102 x 104 mm.

ETV (Electronic Throttle Valve) System

Kawasaki’s first fully electronic throttle actuation system enables the ECU to control the volume of both the fuel (via fuel injectors) and the air (via throttle valves) delivered to the engine. Ideal fuel injection and throttle valve position results in smooth, natural engine response. Control of both fuel injection and airflow also enables precise.

Smoked screen

Short-style smoked wind deflector contributes to the VN1700 Voyager Custom’s sporty image.

Muscular front cowling

Large, muscular front cowling is reminiscent of American sports cars in its sculpted, flowing design. Chromed headlamp cover contributes to the look. Louvre-style fog lamp covers can be replaced with accessory fog lamps.

Capacious side bags are curved on the top and flat on the bottom – a design that lends itself well to the bagger styling. Keeping in mind that bagger models are often customised, the side bags open to the side and feature minimalist latches in order to offer the largest possible surface, should owners choose to repaint.

Kawasaki VN1700 Voyager takes on the baggers

Kawasaki VN1700, Harley Street Glide, Victory Cross Country

The imposing bulk of Kawasaki’s new VN1700 Voyager Custom has just landed on UK soil, sending a shudder through the large touring cruiser market. But how scared should the American competition be of the new V-twin?

MCN embarked on two days of summer touring to find out, heading north from Peterborough then criss-crossing Yorkshire before ending in historic York.

All three V-twins are from the same mould – they’re scaled down versions of each manufacturer’s ultimate touring machine. Harley-Davidson was the first machine to do this, turning the Electra Glide into the marginally less extreme Street Glide. You still get a stereo, panniers – hence the ‘bagger’ tag – and lashings of chrome and custom accessories, but it’s not too over the top. Plus the screen has been chopped down to give you that wind-in-your-face feeling.

Victory followed Harley’s lead, turning the outrageously styled Vision Tour into the Cross Country, and Kawasaki have pulled off the same trick by scaling down the full-dressed Voyager into the half-dressed Voyager Custom.

Despite all the cooling fins the Kawasaki is water-cooled, and it lacks the chrome bling of the other two. But the largely black finish gives it a mean look, especially when parked next to the garish Harley with its fire engine red paint (it’s also available in blue, black and grey). The Harley’s classic lines can be traced back to the ’50s but it’s a little too much ‘look at me’ for some. The Victory sits on a stylistic fence between the two.
