Top Bahamas FAQs

When’s the best time to take a cruise to The Bahamas?

Celebrity Cruises sails to The Bahamas year-round. The peak season is from December to early spring, while May and June tend to be wetter. Rain tends to fall in the late afternoon in short, sharp showers, so this shouldn’t be a deterrent from traveling.

Hurricane season is typically from June to November although, fortunately, The Bahamas is rarely affected by hurricanes. There are many systems in place to detect any hurricane weather along your route, ensuring your ship’s captain and crew will be able to chart a path around any bad weather or make modifications to the itinerary to keep you safe. Celebrity’s state-of-the-art ships are built for stability, keeping movement in rough seas to a minimum.

See our blog post about cruising during hurricane season for more information.

Do I need a passport?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

Not all Bahamas cruises require a passport. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to The Bahamas or Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate are sufficient.

On Bahamas cruises that call at other Caribbean ports, you can enter with your U.S. passport book, passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST), or an enhanced driver’s license. See our blog post for more information.

What should I pack for a cruise to The Bahamas?

When packing for a cruise to The Bahamas, you’ll need clothing for a warm, sometimes humid climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock.

If you book a snorkeling excursion, all gear will be provided. If there are places where you may want to snorkel independently, consider bringing your own equipment.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What are some things I can do on my cruise?

The Bahamas offers a range of activities to enjoy during your cruise. In Nassau, you could relax on beautiful beaches on Pearl Island or the Blue Lagoon. Join a watercolor painting class, snorkel over coral reefs, and even swim with friendly pigs. Learn about Nassau’s history, and sample conch fritters, the local specialty. If you’re traveling with kids, you could spend a day exploring Aquaventure waterpark at Atlantis Paradise Island and its waterslides, pools, river rapids, and vast aquarium.

In Bimini, you could relax on a pristine beach in an exclusive resort and swim in the warm, crystal-clear water. If you prefer a more active day, you could hand-feed wild stingrays, swim among reef sharks, or snorkel over the wreck of the Sapona, now colonized by tropical fish.

Perfect Day at CocoCay, our award-winning private island, is the place where you can be as adventurous or as indulgent as you wish. Fly down the tallest waterslide in North America, or whizz along a zipline. Take in the views from 450 feet above the shore in a helium balloon. Enjoy swimming in the largest freshwater lagoon pool in the Caribbean. Or elevate your experience with a luxurious private cabana, either on the powdery beach at Chill Island or perched directly over the aquamarine water.

How long are Bahamas cruises?

Cruises to The Bahamas are three to six nights long. On the shortest Bahamas cruises, you will have a day to explore Nassau and a full day to enjoy the many amenities of your Celebrity Cruises ship.

Other short cruises include Bimini and CocoCay, or a different combination of Key West and Nassau. Slightly longer voyages of five nights visit Key West, Bimini, and CocoCay. On a six-night voyage from Tampa, meanwhile, you will visit Nassau and Bimini and have three full days to enjoy the luxurious amenities of the ship.

What ports do you visit?

We visit three ports in The Bahamas: Nassau, Bimini, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island.

What can I do on board the ship?

Celebrity’s luxurious ships offer a wealth of activities. Bask by the shimmering pool, join a yoga or meditation class in the Fitness Center, or indulge in a blissful treatment in the Spa.

You’ll find a wide variety of places to dine, with menus crafted by our Michelin-starred chef. Enjoy BBQ specialties at the al fresco Lawn Club Grill (on Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Reflection) and marvel at the antics of the 3D characters who “prepare” your dinner in Le Petit Chef.

Enjoy the ship’s upscale bars and lounges, from the lively Martini Bar, where skilled mixologists entertain as they prepare your cocktail, to the beautiful Sunset Bar, a popular gathering place for pre-dinner drinks with friends, with infinite views of the blue ocean. You’ll find live music all over the ship late into the night, whether you want to dance, listen to jazz, or attend a Broadway-quality show in the Theatre.

Elevate your experience on board by choosing The Retreat , where you’ll luxuriate in a beautiful suite and have access to an exclusive lounge and the exceptional Luminae at the Retreat restaurant.

Where do Bahamas cruises depart from?

Celebrity’s Bahamas cruises sail from three ports in Florida: Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa.

The 9 best Bahamas cruises for every type of traveler

Melinda Crow

The best Bahamas cru ises take you away from the daily grind, transporting you to theme park-like private islands and beach-lined paradises. Cruise choices include new and jazzed-up ships sailing an array of short and weeklong Bahamas itineraries. Cruising to the Bahamas is so easy you may even be able to go without a passport .

Family-friendly lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, offer cruises focused on the Bahamas all year. So do newcomers Virgin Voyages, with its adults-only sailings, and Margaritaville at Sea, offering short two-night hops and longer cruise-and-stay packages. The winter and early spring seasons bring a handful of itineraries on premium lines like Celebrity Cruises and Holland America.

The only cruise lines that don't regularly offer Bahamas cruises are the luxury lines. But don't worry, luxe lovers: Many of the ships we included on our list of the best Bahamas cruises offer suites that come with concierge services, private enclaves or special spa privileges. If a luxury cruise to the Bahamas is your goal, look at the top suite options on a mainstream or premium line.

Whether you're looking for a quick and cheap getaway or a week at the beach, here are the best Bahamas cruise itineraries to start your search, in order from shortest to longest.

2-night cruises on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise from Palm Beach, Florida

expedia cruises bahamas

Though cruising is relatively new to the Margaritaville travel and hospitality franchise, cruise line Margaritaville at Sea is essentially a rebranding of the old Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Its refurbished ship, Paradise, originally debuted in the 1990s for Costa Cruises.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment, including the musical production, "Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy's Ship Show." There's a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.

The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport, where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. Margaritaville at Sea also offers cruise-and-stay itineraries of either four or six nights (including the two nights onboard the ship). These packages let you choose between two partner hotels in Freeport, where you'll stay two or four nights on land, then hop back on the ship for your return night at sea.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise carries around 1,300 passengers in an assortment of inside and ocean-view cabins, all around 176 square feet, which is larger than the average for those categories on most mainstream ships. Ten suites with balconies are also available, with 524 square feet of space.

Who should go? Obviously, Parrotheads are gonna want to try this ship, with all its Jimmy Buffett-inspired themes and decor, but it's also a good trial run for anyone on the fence about cruising. Pricing makes this a great cruise to enjoy an escape without spending a fortune. We found weekday sailings that begin at $99 per person based on double occupancy for an inside cabin.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas from Miami

expedia cruises bahamas

This itinerary may be the best overall short Bahamas cruise. Both the three- and four-night cruises have stops at Nassau and Royal Caribbean 's massive private island — Perfect Day at CocoCay . Those two stops combined give cruisers the opportunity to enjoy water sports, spend some time at the beach and experience a bit of Bahamian culture.

Freedom of the Seas has plenty of onboard fun to occupy travelers of all ages on sea days. It's loaded with top-deck slides and water features, specialty restaurant choices and more entertainment options than you can take in on a short cruise. Carrying around 4,000 cruise guests, Freedom of the Seas is big enough to impress without being overwhelming.

Plus, logistics for cruising out of Miami are simple enough for even first-time cruisers. From flight choices to pre- or post-cruise hotels, it's a city that caters to tourists, especially the cruising ones.

Who should go? From first-timers to veteran cruisers, anyone looking for a short but fun-filled hop to the Bahamas should give Freedom of the Seas a look. Families looking for a quick escape will find entertainment and activities for toddlers to teens. The ship is also ideal for family reunions, bachelorette parties and birthday cruises. Couples will love the adults-only Solarium with its extra-large hot tubs looking out over the sea.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida

expedia cruises bahamas

When Royal Caribbean' s giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in July 2024, it will offer a bevy of short sailings, including three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida. The 236,860-ton, 5,669-passenger vessel will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world and offer more exciting amenities than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

Why? The newest, biggest ships in the world typically sail longer cruises. Offering short cruises on its humongous Oasis Class ships is new for Royal Caribbean; sister ship Allure of the Seas will test out the concept before Utopia launches.

Families with kids will definitely go bananas over the choices on board the new ship. The top deck alone will feature three separate pool areas, a surfing simulator, a kiddie splash zone, a basketball court, two rock walls, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The ship will also boast an extensive selection of restaurants, bars, lounges and shops. Additionally, there will be an indoor skating rink, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows.

Utopia of the Seas' inaugural voyage is set for July 22, 2024, and will be a four-night cruise to Nassau and the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The second sailing will be a three-night cruise to the Bahamas that departs on July 26, 2024.

Who should go? Short sailings on this new ship will appeal to all sorts of cruisers. Historically, new ships are reserved for longer itineraries, so this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a snack-size sampling of a brand-new ship without spending the money on a longer sailing.

Families craving a quick getaway where the entire brood is satisfied will not be disappointed. In addition to seemingly endless kid-friendly amenities and top-notch children's programming, Utopia of the Seas will feature a casino and adults-only spaces.

3- or 4-night cruises on Disney Wish from Port Canaveral, Florida

expedia cruises bahamas

Disney waited a decade to build its next new ship, but Disney dreamers had their wish granted in 2022. Even better, the new Disney Wish cruises to the Bahamas. Designed to be the perfect complement to a visit to Orlando's Disney theme parks, these short cruises visit Nassau and Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. The four-night itinerary adds a sea day to enjoy the ship.

Disney Wish is designed to immerse cruisers in the various Disney worlds through technology. An onboard augmented reality game turns the Disney Cruise Line Navigator smartphone app into a virtual spyglass that lets cruisers participate in a fantasy adventure with Disney and Pixar characters. The AquaMouse waterslide combines a splashy tube ride in a two-seater raft with a pre-adventure tale told through screens at the beginning of the ride. Diners at the Worlds of Marvel restaurant take part in an interactive Avengers-themed experience through videos and special effects.

Wish carries 4,000 passengers in cabins and suites designed to simplify cruising with kids. But never fear, adult Disney fans; you'll also find your spot on board. From the "Star Wars"-themed Hyperspace Lounge to the Quiet Cove adults-only sun deck, Disney manages to cater to grownups as well as kids.

Who should go ? This is obviously the best Bahamas cruise for lovers of all things Disney, including "Star Wars" and Marvel fans.

3- or 4-night cruises on Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

expedia cruises bahamas

Beginning in April 2024, Celebrity Cruises will sail three- and four-night voyages round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, year-round.

The 3,046-passenger Celebrity Reflection will offer a consistent rotation of three-night weekend cruises (departing each Friday and returning each Monday morning) and four-night weekday sailings (departing each Monday and returning each Friday morning).

Itineraries will include stops at Key West in Florida and Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Celebrity appeals mostly to the 40-plus set sans small children. It's light on the kid-centric attractions (such as waterslides, go-karts and laser tag) that other big-ship lines include. The line offers instead lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas. (If you do have kids in tow, you can take advantage of the extensive children's program, Camp at Sea. It provides supervised activities daily for children ages 3-12 in dedicated spaces.)

Celebrity Reflection is the line's last and largest Solstice Class cruise ship. The Solstice Class ships feature some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea, with indoor, adults-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship's power grid. You'll also find large spas, casinos, showrooms and a nice selection of restaurants on board.

This ship also boasts one of the most spectacular suites in the cruising world — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Who should go? This an ideal cruise for older travelers who are new to cruising and want to sample one or frequent cruisers who might prefer a shorter time at sea. Although Celebrity doesn't draw many families with young children, the shorter Bahamas itineraries are also perfect for multigenerational family groups seeking an affordable cruise that appeals to all ages.

4-night cruises on Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady from Miami

expedia cruises bahamas

Virgin Voyages aimed to be a disrupter in the cruise market from the beginning — creating a product designed to please even those who claim they would never set foot on a cruise ship. Yet the itinerary for this four-night Bahamas cruise on Scarlet Lady is fairly ordinary. Ports of call include Key West and a private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

It's the ship itself that sets this cruise apart from the pack. You'll find unique cabins (with balcony hammocks), brash red livery and one-of-a-kind onboard activities, such as tattoo parlors, drag shows and '80s-themed fitness classes, to keep its 2,700 sailors (as Virgin calls its passengers) entertained.

Who should go ? This is the best Bahamas cruise for the non-cruiser who is either young at heart or young and eager to party aboard this glitzy ship. If you're easily offended by loud music, round-the-clock partying or sexual innuendo, this is not your Bahamas cruise.

4-day cruises on Norwegian Jade from Miami

expedia cruises bahamas

Norwegian Cruise Line offers four-day sailings from Miami aboard Norwegian Jade. Ports of call include Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, the line's private island.

Port diversions consist of touring the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum and the Key West Aquarium, shopping along Nassau's Bay Street and exploring the white-sand beaches and pristine waters on Great Stirrup Cay.

The 2,402-passenger vessel is part of the line's Jewel class of ships. Though the ship launched in 2006, it received a substantial refurbishment in 2017 that included a cabin remodel, new and expanded dining and a design overhaul.

Norwegian Jewel might not have the extensive top-deck attractions of newer ships, like Norwegian Prima, or as many restaurants and bars. However, passengers will find plenty to occupy their time onboard with scheduled activities, a casino, spa and pool areas.

Who should go? Families, couples and friend groups will appreciate the unstructured nature of a Norwegian cruise. The line's "freestyle cruising" mantra — cruising without rigid dining schedules, dress codes and formal nights — is perfectly suited for short sailings. With a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times, passengers have lots of flexibility for their limited time at sea.

5-night cruises on Carnival Sunshine from South Carolina

expedia cruises bahamas

I am a huge lover of five-night sailings. They are long enough to scratch the cruise itch and short enough to account for travel time to and from the port without adding any extra vacation days. Plus, the slightly longer itineraries are less popular with hard partiers who can be disruptive on shorter Bahamas cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line offers 10 different five-night sailings from Charleston, South Carolina, aboard the 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine. It's currently Carnival's oldest ship (it debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny). However, in 2013, the line gave it a $200 million bow-to-stern glow-up and renamed it Carnival Sunshine. The overhaul produced a new top-deck WaterWorks water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants.

Depending on which itinerary you choose, you can chill out on the beaches of Bimini, shop Nassau's iconic straw market or go horseback riding by the shore of Carnival's private island, Half Moon Cay. Consider a pre- or post-cruise stay in Charleston to take in the city's historic landmarks, epic dining and charming cobblestone streets.

Who should go? These cruises are the best Bahamas sailings for those who prefer the intimacy of an older ship and don't care about flashy amenities and onboard attractions on newer vessels. Plus, they're ideal for travelers who live north of Florida and are looking for a more convenient drive-to departure port.

8-night cruises on Carnival Venezia from New York City

expedia cruises bahamas

The 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia is a bit of an outlier in Carnival Cruise Line's fleet. Originally built for Italy-based Costa Cruises and launched in 2019, it joined the Carnival family in May 2023. (Carnival Corporation is the parent company of both Costa and Carnival.)

The ship was renovated to add many of Carnival's signature venues. However, many of its Costa-aligned, Italian-themed designs remain, including a real gondola "sailing" down the middle of its main dining room and a pool deck built to look like a Venetian boulevard.

Guests might feel like they've been whisked away to Italy thanks to regional touches like the handmade Italian gelato at JavaBlue Cafe and the Italian liqueur-infused concoctions found at many bars.

Two eight-night voyages out of New York City include stops at Freeport, Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

Who should go? This Bahamas cruise is ideal for anyone looking for a different Carnival experience during a weeklong cruise. It's almost like traveling to Italy and the Bahamas in one trip.

Bottom line

The best Bahamas cruises offer something cruisers can't quite get enough of — whether it's beach time or party time. While short sailings are still the most popular Bahamas itineraries, you can find options for almost every cruising style. The key is identifying the cruise that fits your style, preferred activities and vacation budget.

When to Sail

Check out the following graph for more information on each destination’s high, shoulder, and low seasons.

Higher rates typically occur during peak cruising times, such as holidays or the summer months, when the destination’s weather is most ideal. In high season, be sure to book early due to the limited number of cabins.

Shoulder season is when weather conditions and pricing fall between high season and low season. Fares during this season are still very affordable, as it’s before high tourist season normally begins.

Fares often drop during low season, which is either early or late in the cruise season, such as May or September in Alaska or Europe. Many choose to take a chance on unpredictable weather for a more affordable vacation and fewer crowds.

* Please note : Holidays draw crowds, even in low seasons.

when to sail info

Alaska : High season is July–Aug; shoulder is June; low is April, May, and Sept; no sailings Oct–Mar.

Bermuda : High season is June–Aug; shoulder is April–May; low is Sept–Oct; no sailings Nov–Mar.

Canada/New England : High season is Sept–Oct; shoulder is July–Aug; low is May and June; no sailings Nov–April.

Caribbean : High seasons are mid Jan–April and June–Aug; shoulder is May; low is Sept–mid Jan.

Hawaii : High season is Nov–April; shoulder is May–Aug; low is Sept and Oct.

Mexico : High season is mid Oct–April, and Dec; shoulder is May; low is June–early Oct.

East/West Mediterranean : High season is June–Aug; shoulder seasons are Sep–mid Nov and April–May; low is mid Nov–Mar.

Northern Europe : High season is mid June–Aug; shoulder is Sep and beg. of June; low is April–May; no sailings Oct–Mar.

Destination by Season

Not sure what time of year is best for a cruise? Here are some helpful tips to get you started.

If you enjoy fall foliage, consider a September or October cruise to the east coasts of the U.S. and Canada. This is also a great time to sail to Europe, when you can beat the crowds and enjoy more moderate temperatures than the summer months. You'll also find less expensive sailings this time of year. (Note that early fall is hurricane season in the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Mexico; however, cruise lines can easily change course to avoid a storm.)

Exchange cold weather for some sun! Winter is a popular time to cruise to the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Spring-break cruises abound in the Bahamas and Mexico. In addition, spring is a great time to visit the Mediterranean. For Alaska, try late spring—an affordable time to go, as it's right before high season when prices go up.

Alaska attracts a high concentration of travelers in the summer months, but it's also a popular time to enjoy Europe's sights. And don't forget the kids! With school out for the summer, this is a convenient time to get the whole family together, especially in kid-friendly beach destinations like the Caribbean or the Bahamas.

How to Save

With meals, entertainment, and lodging already included, cruises are an excellent way to travel on a budget. Here are some extra tips to help you save when you sail.

Wave Season

No matter when you plan to sail, consider making your cruise booking between January and March, when cruise lines offer some of their best deals of the year.

Repositioning Cruises

Another great way to save is when a ship is in process of relocating between seasons. You can cruise for less and enjoy more days at sea. Note that any airfare purchased won't be roundtrip, as you will be flying into one destination and out of another.

If you're willing to chance unpredictable weather, consider cruising when rates drop and you can easily score the sailing date and cabin of your choice.

How to Choose Your Cabin

All cabins are classified as inside, oceanview, balcony, or suite . Before booking, consider the time you’ll spend in your cabin. If you want a spacious, relaxing space, you’ll likely want to opt for a larger oceanview, balcony, or suite. Plan to use it to just sleep and shower? An inside cabin might appeal to you.

  • Inside cabins are the smallest cabins, with no views, but are a good option for budget travelers. We do not recommend inside cabins for more than two guests.
  • Oceanview cabins have windows or portholes, and are great for those who prefer natural light and more space while still being economical.
  • Balcony cabins are ideal for those who seek a private outdoor space attached to their own room, where they can dine or just relax and take in the amazing views of destinations they visit.
  • Suites are generally the largest cabins onboard and offer the most exclusive amenities. They have windows and usually larger balconies, often with full dining tables. Some cruise lines even have a hot tub on your balcony or two bedrooms. Amenities vary from butler and concierge service to priority embarkation/disembarkation, dinner and spa reservations, and more.

The majority of cabins accommodate at least two guests; however, many cabins sleep more (often with pullman beds or sofa beds) to accommodate families or groups. Special large suites can accommodate as many as 14, such as Royal Caribbean’s Presidential Family Suite, featuring 4 bedrooms and a living room. For a more economical family option, we suggest connecting cabins. Keep in mind, cabins for 3 or 4 passengers and connecting cabins are limited and sell out quickly. (Specific occupancy details are listed on the cabin category page during the booking process.)

Cruise Ship

Cabin Location

Why do cabins with identical or similar descriptions vary in price? Typically, cabins located on higher decks and mid-ship are the most expensive because they have more balcony space and expansive views, and are easily accessible to outdoor public spaces and activities.

When choosing a cabin, consider the following:

  • Motion sickness : To avoid a queasy stomach, choose a cabin mid-ship on a lower level.
  • Proximity to public areas : Do you want to be by public areas such as the pool, entertainment areas, or the kids' clubs? Consider your preferences and choose a cabin near (or away from) these areas.
  • Noise : For a quieter location, a cabin that is both above and below other cabins—rather than above or below public areas like a basketball court or children’s areas—is a safe bet. Also avoid cabins that are low and in close proximity to the engine or anchor.
  • Mobility : Do you have mobility issues? Choose a cabin near an elevator for convenience.
  • Privacy : Do you want an exclusive feel to your cruise? Some cruise lines have cabins in private spaces with special restaurants and lounges, such as Norwegian Cruise Line's Haven and MSC Cruises' Yacht Club concept.
  • Forward-facing balcony cabins or suites are located at the front of the ship, allowing you the same views as the Captain.
  • Mid-ship balcony cabins or suites are located along the sides of the ship, and are the closest proximity to public areas and activities.
  • Aft balcony cabins or suites are at the very back of the ship. They offer 180-degree views of the ship’s wake, and the balconies are often larger in these cabins.

Booking Your Cruise

  • Inside cabins are generally the smallest cabins onboard and have no views, but are a good option if you are on a tight budget.
  • Oceanview cabins include windows or portholes and provide a view of ports visited.
  • Balcony cabins feature an ocean-facing balcony that offers a space to relax that is all your own.
  • Suites are the largest cabins onboard. They have windows and usually balconies, and offer the most amenities, often including exclusive butler or concierge service, and other special amenities.

Booking a Guaranteed Cabin quickly and easily secures a cabin in your selected category, but your exact room will not be assigned until the time of ship check-in. (Final cabin location, including deck, are at the total discretion of the cruise line.)

Changing or Cancelling Your Cruise

Most cruise lines allow you to cancel your cruise without a fee when done at least 91 days before departure. However, any shorter notice will likely result in fees. Cruise cancellation fees increase the closer to the departure date that a cancellation is made. Consult the cruise line's rules and regulations during booking for their specific cancellation fees and policies. You may also want to consider Cruise Travel Protection, which can reimburse you for cancellation penalties in case of medical emergencies.

Whether or not to purchase Cruise Travel Protection is an individual decision. However, it is recommended that you purchase Cruise Travel Protection in case illness or injury keeps you from traveling. If you need to cancel your trip because you, your immediate family, or your travel companion are too sick to travel, you can get reimbursed for your original trip cost. Cruise Travel Protection can also help you find a doctor or hospital in case of medical emergencies and can reimburse you for eligible medical expenses.

If you purchase Cruise Travel Protection and must cancel your cruise for a covered reason, you will be reimbursed for the cancellation penalty. The cost of the plan is nonrefundable. Please be sure to read the summary of coverage for terms, conditions, and plan sponsors.

You may be able to add another passenger, depending on the cabin's passenger capacity and the point at which you decide to add the passenger; however, there is no guarantee that the person can be added, or that the price will stay the same. If you would like to add another passenger, please call a Cruise Specialist at 1-888-249-3978.

Cruise lines may not let you change a passenger's name, or sometimes even that name's spelling, after you complete your reservation and are inside of their penalty period. Changes like these can be costly, so please be absolutely certain that all passengers' names are listed exactly as they appear on their proof of citizenship (passports or government-issued photo IDs and birth certificates).

Payment/Receipt

If your cruise departs more than 60 days in the future, you can usually choose to book with only a deposit. If you choose to make a deposit, your confirmation email will provide your final payment due date.

After you book your cruise, you will receive a confirmation email that will let you know when your final payment is due and how to pay online. You may also call a Cruise Specialist at 1-888-249-3978 to make your final payment. Keep in mind that if you are not paid in full by the final due date, the cruise line can cancel your reservation and will not refund you for any payments you've already made.

If your payment card is not accepted, verify that you entered the card number, expiration date, and billing address correctly. If you are still having trouble, call your credit card company to make sure you haven't exceeded any daily credit limits. If your card is still not accepted, please call a Cruise Specialist for assistance at 1-888-249-3978.

You will notice this if you purchased Cruise Travel Protection. This charge will show up from Expedia, while the cost of the actual cruise and any cruise line airfare you may have purchased will show up as the charge from the cruise line.

Registration and Documents

After booking, you will receive a confirmation email from Expedia. If you only made a deposit while booking, the confirmation email will provide the final payment due date. Once you receive your confirmation, be sure to register online with the cruise line to view your itinerary, book shore excursions, and complete important paperwork that will speed up the embarkation process. You will receive your cruise documents and information (usually in email form) from Expedia prior to your sail date.

If you have booked a last-minute cruise, please call a Cruise Specialist at 1-888-249-3978.

With Expedia, you can book a cruise up to 18 months in advance. By booking this early, you can find great cruise deals and get the cabin and sailing date of your choice.

Life Onboard

  • Documents : Be sure to pack your passport and travel documents.
  • Electronics : For items requiring electrical-outlet usage, such as hair dryers or cell phone chargers, note that most cabins are equipped with U.S. standard 110-volt outlets. Some cabins are also equipped with European standard 220-volt outlets.
  • Everyday Clothing : Pack with both your destination's climate and the cruise ship's dress code in mind. For Alaska, bring protective rain coverings. For the Caribbean, bring plenty of light, airy clothing and sunscreen.
  • Formal Clothing : If your ship has formal nights, men should bring a dark suit or tuxedo, and women should bring a pantsuit or cocktail dress. If you don't own these items, that's OK; most ships have casual dining venues, and some ships also have formal wear rental shops.
  • Forbidden Items : The following items are not permitted onboard: firearms, weapons of any kind, irons, candles, explosives, or animals (except service animals with permission from the cruise line).

Most ships recommend tipping around $10–$15 per person, per day, and many cruise lines automatically charge tips to your shipboard account (guests have the option to adjust this charge at the front desk). You also have the option to pay cash directly to the staff member.

  • Internet : Most ships have Internet access (for a fee), including Internet cafés, access from your cabin, or ship-wide wireless. Remember, Internet access at sea is not going to be as fast or reliable as land connections, and therefore may not be available at all times. For a faster connection, use the Internet at night or in port when other guests are ashore. For more details, check out the ship features on your cruise line's website.
  • Telephone : Most cabins offer telephones. If your cabin does not have a telephone (which is rare), the ship's radio operator can connect you to a mainland number in case of an emergency. Please keep in mind that making a ship-to-shore telephone call can be quite expensive, and it may be worth waiting to use a pay phone at the next port stop.
  • Mobile Devices : Some cruise lines offer onboard service, but reception may depend on your phone carrier. Watch out for expensive additional roaming or usage fees your cell phone provider may issue. To be safe, keep your cell phone off, or on airplane mode, to prevent charges from incoming text messages or roaming.

To check email or use social media, your best bet is to pay for access to the ship's computer stations. Another option is to find a free Wi-Fi location ashore, and download all your emails at no charge.

Laundry and dry-cleaning services are offered by most major cruise lines. Information about the service fees and procedures can be found in your cabin.

Smoking is usually allowed in limited designated areas, but not in most of the cabins, including your balcony, in the main dining rooms, or in most public areas. Cruise lines are strict about this policy and there can be cleaning fees or other penalties if you violate this. Consult the cruise line's general conditions, rules, and regulations for additional details about the cruise line's specific smoking policies.

Most cruise ships maintain a minimum drinking age of 21; however, a few may lower the drinking age to 18 when sailing from non-U.S. ports.

While doing your online registration with the cruise line, they will provide you with information about shore excursions (including photos, video clips, excursion difficulty, duration, and cost). We also recommend researching the options available through Expedia partner, Shore Excursions Group .

If the cruise line does not allow you to book an excursion online ahead of time, or if you choose not to, you can book onboard at the ship's shore excursion desk. Book early for the best selection, as some excursions sell out quickly.

  • All passengers must be onboard at least 60–90 minutes prior to departure. Check the individual cruise line's policies for final boarding times.
  • Check in at the pier with your proof of citizenship (passport or government-issued photo ID and birth certificate). Some itineraries may include countries requiring travel visas . Check the individual cruise line's policies for required documentation.
  • At this time, you'll also set up your onboard account for services and items purchased onboard.
  • Upon boarding, you'll be able to have a snack or a full lunch, explore the ship, or simply spend time in your cabin. Due to security reasons, passengers may not bring visitors onboard.

On the final night of the cruise, you'll have the option of placing your luggage outside your cabin door. If you don't set your luggage out, you'll be required to take it off the ship yourself. If you do leave your luggage out, be sure to keep any necessities in a carry-on bag, as your luggage will not be accessible until after you depart the ship.

If you want breakfast, you'll generally need to get up extra early. Passengers depart in groups. Your group information, along with any necessary customs forms, will be left in your cabin the night before you disembark. You'll be required to pass through customs as you depart the ship.

Disembarkation can take 2–3 hours. Please allow plenty of time to disembark the ship, go through customs, and get to the airport in time for check-in. We suggest you schedule your return flight to depart a minimum of 6 hours after you're scheduled to arrive in port.

First-Time Cruise Tips

Best Time to Book a Cruise : Wave Season (January–March) is when you'll score the year's top deals, including free perks (like upgrades & onboard credits) and discounted fares.

Avoid the Queasy Stomach : Sensitive to motion sickness? Choose a cabin on a lower deck, mid-ship.

Arrive Early at the Cruise Port : Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before your ship's departure time. If possible, fly to your embarkation city the night before in case of flight delays.

Get Onboard Spa Specials : If you're a spa seeker, look for specials on days the ship is in port. You can save up to 25%—a great way to kick-start a vacation!

Ask for a Wakeup Call : Most cabins don't have alarm clocks, so plan to bring your own, or request a phone wakeup call.

Celebrate Special Occasions : Celebrating a birthday or anniversary onboard? Preorder flowers, cakes, champagne, and more on your cruise line's website.

Check the Daily Onboard Schedule : The ship newsletter is delivered nightly to your cabin. Here, you'll find the next day's entertainment schedule, special events, dinner themes and attire, and other helpful tips.

Pose for Pictures : If you don't like lugging your camera around, don't worry! A professional photographer will be onboard to capture special moments, and the photos will be available for purchase at the end of your cruise.

Keep Essentials with You on Embarkation Day : When you hand over your luggage at the dock, it may take a few hours to be delivered to your cabin. Make sure you keep essentials like prescriptions, swimsuits, and sunscreen with you in a separate tote bag or backpack.

Plan Ahead : Popular shore excursions, spa treatments, and tables at specialty restaurants tend to fill up fast, so check your cruise line’s website to see how far in advance these can be booked.

Before You Leave

From booking your shore excursions to packing your bags, there's a lot to remember when preparing to leave for your cruise. Refer to this information to ensure a smooth departure. Things to Do If you booked a flight and/or hotel, be sure to confirm those reservations. Consider buying the Cruise Travel Protection to protect your vacation investment in case of injury or sickness. Complete the advanced registration information on the cruise line's website to reduce the check-in time at the pier. Be prepared to provide your reservation number, passport information, and other details to complete the registration. Research country entry requirements and apply for any necessary visas . Book airport transfers to the pier. If possible, do this several weeks prior to sailing. Inform friends and family of your travel plans and provide them with the cruise line's emergency phone number. Take care of arrangements for your home including houseplants, mail, newspapers, pets, last-minute bills, etc. Book your spa services, specialty restaurant reservations, and popular shore excursions as soon as possible. Some cruise lines allow you to do this online before you sail. Contact your bank to advise them of the countries and/or states you'll be visiting. Double-check with your mobile phone carrier about roaming charges in foreign countries. Be prepared with cash. It's handy to have cash in port and for parking at the pier. Most cruise ships have ATMs onboard; however, the ATM service fee may be significant. Cruise Packing List Pack efficiently, leaving enough room to bring home souvenirs. Most cruise ships offer laundry services, so you may not need to bring as many clothing items as anticipated. Check your cruise line for any dress code requirements. Most cruise lines have at least one formal night. Bring your travel documents (cruise ship itinerary and tickets, passports, personal identification, shore excursion confirmations, etc.) along with photocopies. It's also a good idea to have these items in a carry-on bag in case your luggage is lost. Pack everything you'll need for your first day onboard in your carry-on (medications, swimsuit, etc.), as it can take time for your luggage to be delivered to your room. Don't Forget: Sunblock Sunglasses Swimwear (bring a second swimsuit to allow for drying time) Formal wear (check cruise line for any dress code requirements) Comfortable walking shoes Climate-appropriate clothing, including items to layer Prescription medications A small backpack or tote to carry items around the ship or in port Camera with extra film or memory cards Books or magazines for days at sea Batteries or chargers for portable electronic devices Luggage tags Carry-on bag with essentials (you may arrive at your cabin prior to your luggage delivery) Passport and travel documents with photocopies Credit cards and cash

Getting to Your Ship

Upon arrival at the pier, you'll proceed through the embarkation process, making your way through customs and cruise ship check-in. Arriving at the Pier You can purchase round-trip transfers from the airport to the pier from most cruise lines, but if possible, we suggest doing this at least several weeks prior to sailing. If you are parking at the pier, be prepared with cash as many pier parking lots accept cash only. Get onboard as soon as possible to take full advantage of everything the ship has to offer. Ship boarding usually begins four to five hours before the ship is scheduled to depart. Embarkation All passengers must be onboard at least 90 minutes prior to departure. Otherwise, you risk being denied boarding. During embarkation, you'll likely need to show personal identification more than once, so have your passport and cruise documents in-hand to speed up the process. Be sure to change the settings on your cell phone to avoid roaming charges while at sea. Don't Forget: Directions from the airport or your hotel to the pier Airport shuttle or transfer reservations Passport, identification, and cruise documents Luggage and personal items Cash for taxi fare or parking

Onboard Health & Safety

Although many may not think about it when planning a trip, basic ship safety is an important part of a successful cruise vacation. Please take a moment to look over our cruise safety information for helpful tips on what to expect. What to know Plan to take part in the ship's safety, or muster, drill. This mandatory exercise informs passengers with the location and operation of life vests, as well as the emergency exit locations. The drill typically takes place before departure and all passengers are required to participate. Once onboard, take time to explore the ship. Although cruise ships offer ample directional signage and mapping, getting around can be intimidating at first. Here's a quick guide to get you turned in the right direction:     •  Bow : The most forward part of the ship     •  Stern : The rearmost part of the ship     •  Forward : Toward the bow of the ship     •  Aft : Toward the stern of the ship     •  Starboard : When facing forward, the right side of the ship     •  Port : When facing forward, the left side of the ship There are no lifeguards on duty at swimming pools onboard; parental supervision is required for children. Most ships have personal safes within each cabin to securely store your valuables. Health and Wellness All ships have doctors onboard to assist sick passengers. Familiarize yourself with the doctor's location and services. Visit the gift shop to see what items are sold in the event you require over-the-counter medications. Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes—they will be very helpful for all the walking you'll be doing onboard and ashore. Don't Forget: Seasickness medications Personal medications/prescriptions Comfortable shoes

Shore Excursions

Venture to awesome sights far from the pier, skip the hassle of planning your own onshore activities, and learn more about an area from a local guide. Here are some great excursion tips to get you started. How to Book a Shore Excursion Prior to sailing, book through the Shore Excursions Group or with the cruise line directly. Or, once onboard, you can book at the Shore Excursions desk. Think about the type of shore excursion you are looking for. Excursions vary greatly, from active tours (zip-lining, dog-sledding, hiking, etc.) to sightseeing (typically bus tours that take you to your destination). You can also choose from full- and half-day tours, as well as exclusive tours with a limited number of guests. Many shore excursions sell out quickly, so book your excursions ahead of time to secure your reservations. Book online when possible. Cruise Excursion Tips Dress appropriately. Excursions may require you to wear swimwear, jeans, or walking shoes. You can ask the Shore Excursions desk onboard for advice on what to wear for your excursion. Remember, you aren't required to get off the ship on port days, so you can always choose to enjoy a quiet day onboard. This can be a great time to book that much needed spa appointment, too—you'll have the place to yourself! Don't Forget: Towels, swimwear, sunblock, and other appropriate essentials Cash, credit cards, and personal identification safely stored in a small bag or wallet Shore excursion tickets and logistics (meeting times and places, duration, etc.)

Cruise Ship

Disembarkation & Returning Home

Concluding your cruise vacation begins with the disembarkation process: the act of getting off the cruise ship. The following tips will help you prepare for the last day of your cruise. Before Disembarkation Begins Review your final onboard charges statement for accuracy. You can check your account information anytime throughout your cruise at the Guest Services desk, so consider settling up before the last day of your cruise to avoid lines. Look for service charges/tipping to appear on your statement. Many cruise lines charge an automatic fee per person, per day (usually $10–$15 per day) for the service received onboard. If your service was excellent, consider adjusting the tip to a higher amount. On the final night of the cruise, you'll have the option of placing your luggage outside your cabin door. If you don't set your luggage out, you'll be required to take it off the ship yourself. Properly label your bags for easy identification. Bag tags are provided by the cruise line. our disembarkation information, along with any necessary customs forms, will be left in your cabin the night before you disembark. Disembarkation Tipss If you want breakfast on disembarkation day, you'll generally need to get up extra early, so plan accordingly. Don't forget that carry-on bag! Assemble important information and items you'll need (contacts, sunscreen, wallet, etc.) for the last day in a separate bag that you'll take with you. Plan transfers from the pier accordingly. Disembarkation may occur up to three hours after the arrival of the ship due to immigration and customs. Some countries require a departure tax that is due at the airport upon leaving. These taxes are often payable in cash only, so be sure to read up on country-specific departure procedures so you have enough cash on hand. Don't Forget: Carry-on bag and luggage (if you choose to carry the luggage off the ship yourself) Completed customs forms Passport and personal identification Airplane tickets and/or hotel reservation information Airport shuttle or transfer reservations

First look at new Disney Cruise Line Bahamas destination Lookout Cay

The sustainable-minded design merges with vibrant local Bahamian artistry.

Disney Cruise Line has debuted its brand new island port of call in the Bahamas with the opening of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Earlier this week, Mickey and Minnie Mouse welcomed the first guests with their version of Junkanoo, the country's annual festival of unity, for the inaugural voyage.

The one-of-a-kind tropical retreat and second island destination for the cruise line immerses guests in the spirit and culture of the Bahamas with signature Disney entertainment and adventures.

Lookout Cay, a 900-acre retreat located on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, was designed by Walt Disney Imagineers, who worked with local artists to reflect the essence of local traditions. It is full of nature trails, a water play area and beautiful beaches for families and adults.

"The goal for our team is to celebrate the Bahamas and the beauty of the island of Eleuthera," said Kevin Thomas, Walt Disney Imagineering creative director. "Rather than creating a fictional story here at Disney Lookout Cay, we are offering Guests an opportunity to relax, enjoy and experience the magnificent landscape and culture that abounds through the islands via expressions of art, music and storytelling."

The island destination is filled with dramatic structures designed to resemble vibrant, oversized seashells scattered along the coastline.

Bright, Bahamian-inspired colors and art greets guests at venues including the dining pavilions, bars and the Goombay Cultural Center, which is the focal point of Disney Lookout Cay.

"I am proud to have played a part in bringing this vision to life and believe that Disney's commitment to promoting cultural understanding and appreciation will leave a lasting impact on all who visit Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point," notable Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts said in a statement.

In an commitment to protect the natural beauty of the Bahamas, Disney said it worked to have as little impact on the environment as possible throughout the design, construction, and operation of Disney Lookout Cay.

Disney Cruise Line developed less than 16% of the site, leaving an overwhelming majority of the land in its natural state, and the company has also committed to sending zero waste to landfill. The company said 90% of the destination's energy demand will be from renewable sources.
