Great Self Guided Jeep Experience

Wonderful self guided tour with brand new jeeps just steps from the cruise ship. Very informative audio explains the sites along with history. Nice clean new jeep that was very easy to drive. Right off the pier where the cruise ships dock.

The company is located across the street from the port. We are a family of five and were looking for something that appealed to our teens, yet gave us a good overview of the area. This was perfect. We learned so much. One stop was at the Mendenhal Glacier. We also saw bears and marmots while out and about. This is the best way to see Juneau. We took about six or so hours on our own. One of the stops is a gardens with a separate admission fee, which we skipped by. That will require extra time, so you would need closer to the full eight hours if you do it all.

jeep tour juneau alaska

What a wonderful way to explore Juneau. Freestyle laid back and on your own. So happy we stumbled on to this. Thanks for making this stop unforgettable!

I would highly recommend Unplugged Adventures to anyone who wants to get "out" of the tourist ports. Our group rented 3 jeeps and spent all day driving over Juneau. The GPS they had set up was beyond helpful! We loved our adventure and getting unplugged in Alaska!

AMAZING!! This is a super fun, cost effective way to get to see everything in Juneau & the surrounding area. You get a Jeep, a fully loaded iPad guide with awesome history & stories and then get to go anywhere you want at your own pace. Total Captain America experience and far, far cheaper and faster than doing multiple tours!! LOVED IT!!!

Photo of Kyle R.

Accommodating, awesome, adventurous! Thank you Unplugged guys for an outstanding, one-of-a-kind Jeep adventure around the jewel of Juneau and North Douglas island. Great stops and narration along the way. If in Juneau, go Unplugged!

jeep tour juneau alaska

Worth the price, very reliable on directions and places to see. Clean and efficient check in and check out process. Friendly staff that provided more local recommendations. Wish we had know we could rent directly through them versus the cruise ship.

Ok so this review is so well deserved. My wife and I visited Alaska for the very first time on a cruise. We pulled into Juneau and the cute little town is full of shops etc. we wanted to see the real sights so we asked a local what to do. She said rent a Jeep and drive and we are so thankful she did! This new small business rents you a brand new Jeep with the coolest app it gives you multiple scenic trips to try with approximate times it will take and then as you go to these spots it talks to you explaining where you are, the history behind each spot etc. without them we would have been stuck doing the same things everyone else is doing. Unplugged allowed us to see the real Alaska and at a very small cost! They rented us the Jeep so fast I think it was like 5 minutes max and we were on our way. I would like to thank you unplugged for allowing us to make memories we will never forget and highly recommend to anyone who wants to get out of the tourist trap and truly see the last frontier! Please enjoy some pics of what we were able to take in!

100% will do this a few times this summer!!! I work in the Jewelry stores up the street and I had my day off and took complete advantage of my day off with the this!!! I even want to pay to have the app on my cell phone just for learning about Juneau the Audio tour is amazing!!! They really took time and a ton of effort into making the app and it proves it. HONESTLY when I first heard about it I thought it was going to be a basic video guidance but man the GPS system is amazing!!! Little updates can help like zoom feature to check the rest of the route over the map but it's awesome even has MUSIC when there is no interesting tour to talk about.

Photo of Tania D.

I honestly think it's the best way to go see the glaciers and stop at all the location that you would normally do on a tour bus.( not crowded, your time, your music) Great price especially if you are a large family rates are around $275 jeep rental for four hrs... they do offer discounts for people on the cruises. The employees are great I hope that they are added to the cruise line as a tour.. the weather canceled our dog sledding but luckily we found this place!!!!! They also gps that is programmed locations

Loved it!!! Super fast and friendly!! The app in the Jeep takes you to some of the top spots in Juneau...

Great experience. Don't book a Jeep tour on the cruise ship - book here right at the dock. The iPad tour guide was very informative and the ability to spend as much or as little time at each stop was a huge plus as was the ability to stop and get a great wildlife picture whenever the opportunity arose.

What a great idea. Drive yourself Jeep tour. Comfortable, new Jeep. It has a ipad installed with many different tours that you can choose from. It is hard wired through the stereo which is wonderful for all passengers to be able to listen to the tour information. Highly recommend this excursion. We were able to go where we wanted to and at our pace. We even did some Walmart shopping after a Starbucks run !!!

Good to Know: The two-door Wrangler can seat up to four guests and has an automatic transmission. The third and fourth guest needs to be able to step through to the back seat. Ride through the wilderness on the outskirts of Juneau in a Jeep with a retractable top that will offer unobstructed views of the extraordinary natural beauty. A short drive along the Gastineau Channel will take you to Mendenhall Glacier, one of North America’s most accessible glaciers. As a bonus, a leisurely walk along the Steep Creek Trail offers an added chance to possibly observe a bear in the forest. Take a memorable drive toward the end of the road system, where the views from Eagle Beach are sweeping and this secluded stretch of sand is a great spot to view the majestic Chilkat Mountains. Also on your journey is the National Shrine of St. Thérèse; the building’s cobblestone exterior on a serene island is particularly memorable. Depending on weather conditions and guest preferences, your host will select a fourth destination that may include a scenic drive on Douglas Island, a visit to the salmon hatchery or a trip into Juneau’s past at historic Gold Creek.

Visiting Juneau:

Juneau, originally named Harrisburg after one of its co-founders, was the first town established in Alaska after it’s purchase from Russia in 1867. In 1880, the first rush of miners came in search of gold. With the help of Tlingit Chief Kowee, seekers found gold and by the end of 1916, there were three successful mines producing millions of dollars worth of gold. Once word of Juneau’s natural beauty and prospecting triumph’s spread, more visitors began flocking to the town and haven’t stopped since! Nowadays Juneau sees nearly 1 million visitors every year - will you be one of them?

Come visit, check out our list of the best  things to do in Juneau , and take in some of the natural highlights like the Juneau helicopter tours over the ice fields, the arrival of the humpback whales every summer with one of our Juneau whale watching tours, go dog sledding, go ziplining through  Tongass National Forest , or take a flightseeing trip up to the historic Taku Lodge where you’ll fly over the Taku Glacier, the only glacier unaffected by glacial melting!

The most popular Juneau shore excursions are tours involving glaciers or wildlife sightseeing. The Mendenhall Glacier  is the only glacier that can be accessed by land via the road system, whereas many other glaciers can be experienced through helicopter and seaplane sightseeing. Juneau helicopter tours give you an opportunity to land and walk on various glaciers in the area that could otherwise not be seen or visited. As you prepare for your trip, you can check out the current Mendenhall Glacier weather .

Whale Watching is also very popular and among the best Alaska tours, because of the extreme abundance of whales in the area. Humpback whales spend their summers in Alaska to feed before heading back to Mexico or Hawaii to live and give birth to offspring in the winter months. The nutrient-rich waters create the ideal feeding grounds in Juneau for humpback whales including the spectacular bubble-net feeding technique in which whales work together to consume large amounts of krill, their main food source.  If you're feeling hungry, you can pair your  whale watching tour with an outdoor salmon bake .

Can You Drive to Juneau Alaska? Travel to Juneau (2024)

H ave you found yourself scratching your head and wondering if you can drive to Juneau, Alaska? If so, you’re not alone. This question has puzzled many travelers planning their Alaskan adventure.

Can you drive to Juneau Alaska? The short answer is no, you can’t drive directly to Juneau from anywhere.

As someone who lived in the huge state of Alaska for seven years, I’ve gathered a wealth of knowledge about its unique geography and transportation quirks.

In this post, we’ll unravel the mystery surrounding the accessibility of Juneau, a city known for its stunning landscapes and rich history.

We’ll tackle the complexities of Alaskan geography and transportation, providing clear, reliable information to dispel any doubts you might have.

Whether you’re planning a trip to the Last Frontier or just satisfying your curiosity, this post is designed to guide you through the confusion.

Can You Drive to Juneau, Alaska?

Despite being the capital city of Alaska, Juneau is unique in that it’s not connected to the rest of the state by a road system.

Nestled at the base of towering mountains and surrounded by the waters of the Gastineau Channel, Juneau is what’s known as a ‘roadless city.’

It is a city that’s as unique as it is beautiful. Nestled in the heart of the Inside Passage of the Alaska Marine Highway, it’s a place where mountains and glaciers serve as the backdrop to everyday life.

But there’s that weird catch – if there isn’t a road that leads directly to Juneau, how do you get there?

Well, it’s all part of the Alaskan adventure! You could drive to Bellingham in Washington State and hop on a ferry for a scenic journey.

Or, if you’re up for an epic road trip, you could traverse part of the iconic Alaskan-Canadian Highway and then catch a ferry from Skagway to Juneau.

Either way, the journey to Juneau is just as memorable as the destination itself!

Is Juneau Only Accessible by Boat?

While boat travel is a popular way to reach Juneau, it’s not the only option. Juneau is primarily accessible by two means: by sea and by air.

BY SEA : The Alaska Marine Highway System operates ferries that connect Juneau with other communities in Southeast Alaska, as well as with Bellingham, Washington. This is a scenic and popular way to reach Juneau, allowing you to bring your vehicle with you.

BY AIR : Juneau International Airport serves as a major hub for air travel in Southeast Alaska. It offers regular flights to and from several Alaskan cities and towns, as well as seasonal flights to Seattle, Washington.

So, while you can’t drive directly to Juneau, you have options when it comes to choosing your mode of transportation. Whether you prefer the leisurely pace of a ferry ride or the speed and convenience of air travel, getting to Juneau is part of the fun!

How Do I Get My Car to Juneau?

If you want to bring your car to Juneau, the most feasible option is to use the Alaska Marine Highway System, which operates a network of ferries that transport people, vehicles, and cargo to various locations in Alaska such as Whittier, Valdez , Homer, Ketchikan, and Haines, to name a few.

Here’s how you can do it:

  • Drive to a Ferry Terminal : The southernmost terminal of the Alaska Marine Highway System is in Bellingham, Washington. You can drive your car to this terminal.
  • Take the Ferry : Once you reach the terminal, you can load your car onto the ferry. The ferry will then transport you and your car along the scenic Inside Passage to Juneau. The journey takes about 2-3 days, depending on the specific route and schedule.

Remember to book your ferry passage in advance, especially during the busy summer months. Also, note that the cost of ferry travel will depend on the size of your vehicle and the number of passengers.

So, while you can’t drive directly to Juneau, you can certainly bring your car with you and enjoy the freedom of having your vehicle once you’re there!

What to Pack for Your Juneau Adventure

Heading on an adventure to Juneau, Alaska, is an exciting prospect! To ensure you’re well-prepared for your trip, it’s important to pack appropriately. Here’s a practical guide to help you decide what to bring, depending on the season and your planned activities.

Clothing : Regardless of the season, layering is key in Juneau. The weather can change quickly, so it’s best to be prepared.

  • A mix of short and long-sleeved tops
  • Warm sweater or fleece, and a waterproof jacket
  • Knit hat and light gloves
  • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring the city
  • Gore-Tex hiking boots if you plan to hit the trails.

Outdoor Gear : If you’re planning outdoor activities, consider packing the following items to make your day more comfortable and efficient.

  • Binoculars for wildlife viewing
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Backpack for day trips

Summer Accessories : If the sun is shining, which admittedly, doesn’t always happen, you will want some protection!

  • Cap or baseball hat
  • Bug spray can also be useful

Winter : Winter in Alaska can be brutally cold. Juneau can be damp as well as it is rainier in this area.

  • Warm waterproof mittens
  • Fleece-lined hat
  • Thermal Layers
  • Waterproof winter boots

Essentials : Everyone has those personal needs that one doesn’t want to forget to pack! Make a list and check it twice.

  • Travel documents
  • Medications
  • Any specialty items you might not be able to find easily in Juneau

Remember, packing for Juneau is all about preparing for adventure and being ready to embrace the elements, whatever the weather may bring.

Here are some of the top attractions that visitors to Juneau, Alaska, should not miss that work well for day trip ideas:

FAQS: Can You Drive to Juneau, Alaska?

Understandably, people have quite a few questions about how to get to the small city of Juneau, Alaska! Here are some common ones and some answers.

Why is Juneau not accessible by car?

Juneau’s unique geographical location is the primary reason it’s not accessible by car. The city is nestled in the Southeast Alaska panhandle, surrounded by water on one side and towering mountains and glaciers on the other. This rugged terrain makes it impossible to build a road that directly connects Juneau to the rest of Alaska or the lower 48 states.

Are there any roads going to Juneau Alaska?

While there are no roads that connect Juneau to the rest of Alaska or the continental United States, the city itself does have a road system. The Juneau road system covers the local area, including the Mendenhall Valley, Auke Bay, and out to Thane and the Kensington Mine. However, these roads end where the city ends.

Are there cars in Juneau Alaska?

Yes, there are cars in Juneau, Alaska. Despite the city’s unique geographical location and lack of connecting roads to other cities, Juneau has a local road system that residents and visitors use for transportation within the city and its surrounding areas.

People use cars for daily commuting, running errands, and exploring the local area.

The local road system covers areas such as Downtown Juneau, the Mendenhall Valley, Auke Bay, Douglas Island, and out to Thane and the Kensington Mine.

Additionally, cars can be brought to Juneau via the Alaska Marine Highway System, which operates ferries that can transport vehicles. There are also car rental services available in Juneau for visitors who need a vehicle during their stay.

Do you need a car when visiting Juneau Alaska?

Whether you need a car when visiting Juneau, Alaska, largely depends on what you plan to do during your visit! If you’re planning to stay mainly in downtown Juneau and visit attractions such as the Alaska State Museum, the State Capitol, or the historic district, you might not need a car.

Downtown Juneau is quite walkable, and many of the main attractions are within a reasonable walking distance of each other.

However, if you want to explore areas outside of downtown, such as the Mendenhall Glacier, having a car can be beneficial. Public transportation in Juneau is limited, and while there are some bus services, they may not align with your schedule or go to all the places you want to visit.

There are also taxi services and tour companies that offer transportation to popular attractions. Some visitors also choose to rent bicycles or scooters to get around.

The Bottom Line: Can You Drive to Juneau Alaska?

So while we’ve determined that you can’t drive to Juneau, Alaska, this unique aspect only adds to the city’s charm and allure!

The journey to Juneau, whether by ferry or plane, is an adventure in itself, offering spectacular scenery in the Alaskan wilderness.

Once there, you’ll find a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, from the bustling downtown to the serene Mendenhall Glacier.

So, don’t let the lack of a road deter you. Embrace the adventure, set sail for the horizon, and discover the unforgettable experience that is Juneau.
