There's an entire world of music inside Jacob Collier that he's happy to share with his audiences if you're lucky enough to attend one of his concerts. Using one-of-a-kind custom designed technology, he's able to replicate the complex harmonies from his YouTube videos in a live setting. He also scampers around the stage playing drums, percussion, bass, guitar, piano and synthesizer, all of which are sampled in real time to provide densely layered musical textures.

I saw him last fall at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and again last night at the San Francisco Jazz Center, and in the intervening months he has shown tremendous growth as a performer and entertainer. His set now includes a video component which is shot live every night and therefore is different at each performance. The videos added subtle nuances and shadings to his songs that made each of them a more complete emotional expression of his musical world.

In addition to performing several of his own compositions from his debut CD, "In My Room," his set also included songs by Stevie Wonder, George Gershwin, Lennon & McCartney and Bacharach & David. He takes the concept of a one-man band to an entirely new, dynamic and fascinating level and also lends new meaning to the phrase "playing with yourself." (Sorry, couldn't resist the cheap tacky joke!)

This was one of the best concerts I've ever attended! Jacob Collier is fantastic and a musical genius! I first heard about Jacob listening to a PBS fresh air radio broadcast and decided to look him up on you tube. I was so impressed that I got my husband who has a doctorate degree in piano performance to listen with me. He agreed that Jacob is a musical genius so I searched for tickets in the US and found the Bowery Ballroom performance. We traveled by train from Baltimore to attend and we would go see him again and bring friends this time! Come to the Baltimore/DC region, Jacob!!!

Jacob was fabulous! He is brilliantly creative, a great jazz artist (and all other genres). Highlights are him singing (unbelievable range and falsetto) and playing piano. Great band. Great sound team (he gave credit to sound technicians, which should be done more often because of how important they are). Electronic effects are amazing. In some ways Jacob reminded me of the next generation of Frank Zappa. Great entertainer, I need to see him again.

Best show, best songs, best atmosphere amongst the mid-aged public. Very few youngsters, surprisingly though.

A vivid performance and beautiful music, excellently mastering diverse instruments.

A deep bow, a deep thanks for the music.

Please come again.

The new musicians go well with the type of songs, it was, all in all, a beautiful evening.

Thank you Jacob !!!

Jacob Collier is truly an incredible talent, performer, musician, songwriter, etc. There's no other artist like him. He interacts with the audience really well and just seems to be such a genuine, fun, and intelligent person. Jacob's show was definitely an unforgettable (and almost unbelievable) experience.

Sara_Ilana’s profile image

The best audience experience ever. Never before has someone involved the audience so much in the musical experience. The production quality on this from audio to lighting is masterful. The other 3 musicians were fantastic as well. Such an extravagent show yet theres still many moments of intimacy.

noahtiatto’s profile image

That was the most incredible show I've ever seen. I could have watched it for a whole day and still felt like I couldn't get enough. Even if you don't know him but you have a chance go see him. It'll be the best concert you ever see and bring utter joy and awe

chsu2’s profile image

It was awesome! However, the venue was too small for all the people in there and there was no elevation whatsoever, so for us the short people it was impossible to enjoy thw full experience (bad bad venue). Jacob et all were awesome though

ines-leitao’s profile image

One of the most amazing experiences i've had. It was something brilliant and soul moving. The brilliance of this young boy is just starting and I hope people can continue to enjoy and specially feel trough his music, Thanks.

Tickets available starting tuesday, october 17 with artist presale; general onsale begins on friday, october 20 at 10am local on jacobcollier.com/tour, djesse vol. 4 out feb 29 via hajanga/decca/interscope, watch the music video for new single “little blue” (feat. brandi carlile): here.

Jacob Collier has announced his biggest North American headlining tour to date for spring 2024, to celebrate the release of his long-awaited new album Djesse Vol. 4 (February 29, Hajanga / Decca / Interscope). Produced by Live Nation , the 31-date run will visit iconic venues including Radio City Music Hall on April 26, Philadelphia’s The Met on April 29, and The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on May 20. Five years have passed since Collier embarked on the epic musical journey of Djesse , which began as an ambitious idea to make one massive album. Djesse soon erupted into an expansive four-part series that encompasses every genre under the sun, culminating in a grand finale that combines all the elements that came before – and so much more. Through five GRAMMY wins and eleven nominations including Album of the Year for 2020’s Djesse Vol. 3 , dozens of collaborations and hundreds of performances, Collier’s talent and imagination have continued to exceed his own stratospheric heights and led his fans to expect the unexpected.

Tickets and VIP packages will be available starting with an artist presale beginning at 12pm ET on Tuesday, October 17. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general onsale beginning Friday, October 20 at 10am local time (11am ET for Radio City Music Hall) at jacobcollier.com/tour

Collier announced Djesse Vol. 4 the day after he headlined the Hollywood Bowl last month, and shared new single “Little Blue” (feat. Brandi Carlile) .  Watch the video , and learn more about Djesse Vol. 4 in Billboard or Collier’s recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show .

Djesse has so far included 37 songs, welcoming nearly 25 featured artists, plus gospel choirs, orchestras and more into Collier’s singular world. The list of special guests includes a diverse range of talents, from Ty Dolla $ign, T-Pain, Jessie Reyez and Daniel Caesar to Kimbra, Chris Thile, Rapsody, Tori Kelly, JoJo, Lianne La Havas, Oumou Sangare, Laura Mvula, Steve Vai, gnawa master Hamid Kasri and Take 6. Collier’s recent single “WELLLL” – a crunching slice of rock, pop and punk co-written with Remi Wolf – will also be featured on the new album, as will his GRAMMY-nominated 2022 release, “Never Gonna Be Alone” (feat. Lizzy McAlpine & John Mayer) .

From sweeping orchestral arrangements to intimate folk songwriting, and fusions of R&B, rap and pop, the multitudes of Djesse Vol. 4 are all centered around an ecstatic and global celebration of the human voice. In the midst of working on Djesse , Collier started turning each of his concert audiences into sprawling, improvised choirs. While conducting the crowd at rock clubs and Lincoln Center, even festival fields like Bonnaroo and Glastonbury, droves of fans have all been united in rousing harmony, furthering his guiding belief that everyone in this world is a musician. Having recorded each of his 80+ audience choirs, roughly 150,000 different voices play a role in the story and creation of Djesse Vol. 4 .

Throughout the evolution of Djesse , Jacob Collier’s career has grown to reach tremendous heights as a solo artist headlining the world’s greatest stages, as well as an in-demand collaborator. Djesse has earned Collier three GRAMMY Awards and six nominations. Overall Collier is a 5-time winner and 11-time nominee, making him the first British act in history to win four Grammys for each of his first four albums. In the last twelve months alone his audience choir videos have garnered hundreds of millions of views, he was the first-ever male to be featured as a Vogue Darling, he appeared on the July cover of Rolling Stone UK, and co-wrote and performed on seven tracks of Stormzy’s This Is What I Mean . He has also collaborated extensively with Coldplay and Chris Martin, performing with them on Saturday Night Live in February, as a featured guest at their Wembley Stadium shows last summer, and on their album Music of the Spheres . He has also contributed to major hits including SZA’s “Good Days” and songs by Lizzy McAlpine and Kehlani, and launched a signature line of music-making Crocs. Collier has recorded two NPR Tiny Desks, has spoken at the world-renowned TED conference twice, and has performed on TV shows around the world including the BBC’s Later with Jools Holland, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and more.

About Jacob Collier

Recognized by audiences, critics, and fellow musicians alike as one of the most gifted young artists of modern times, 29-year-old Jacob Collier already has a seemingly endless list of achievements including five Grammy wins along with 11 Grammy nominations including Album of the Year in 2021. As a result, his roster of collaborators is astoundingly varied and vibrant. Jacob’s voice has been featured on recent songs from the likes of Coldplay, SZA, Stormzy, and Kehlani. In his own projects, Collier has worked with an unpredictable cast of artistic powerhouses, from Malian singer Oumou Sangaré to John Mayer, T-Pain, Ty Dolla $ign, Daniel Caesar, and Tori Kelly (to name a few). Exploding onto the global stage with the viral success of his multi-frame, multi-instrumental YouTube covers, Collier caught the attention of Quincy Jones and under his mentorship released his debut album, In My Room , in 2016, which was recorded, produced, and played entirely by Collier. Djesse (his most recent 4-volume album project) has been a natural progression from the one-man process of In My Room , expanding to include collaborators from all over the world. The resulting volumes of Djesse have delivered on Collier’s ambitious promise, featuring an incredible array of artistic peers, and musical themes that encompass everything from orchestral composition to folk songwriting, R&B, rap and pop. Ultimately, although Collier has already achieved more than most artists could hope for in a lifetime, he is still restlessly creative. Alongside the upcoming release of Djesse Vol. 4 , he has plans for future projects centered on solo piano, orchestras, film scoring, teaching, musical theatre, and more.

Jacob Collier Concert Review: Rising Star Connects With His Audience In Boston

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier addressed the crowd during his May 8 concert at Boston's House of Blues.

Around 8:20 pm on May 8 in Boston’s House of Blues, the crowd was getting antsy. “Jacob! Jacob! Jacob!” they chanted with anticipation. The stage was adorned with a variety of plants and a quaint park bench in the center. A rainbow of lights illuminated countless instruments. All that was missing from the set-up were musicians to play them.

At last, English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier came bounding on stage with the unbridled energy of a little boy. In bright orange parachute pants, a shirt decorated with monarch butterflies, and no shoes — only mismatched colorful socks — he leapt to the front of the stage ready to interact with his eager audience. He immediately engaged them in one of his signature call-and-response exercises, asking audience members to repeat his jazz riffs.

“My name is Jacob,” he told the crowd. “What’s yours?” He smiled as everyone yelled their names to him in response, countless voices echoing throughout the packed venue. Perhaps this simple exchange best encapsulates Collier’s approach to performing: His concerts are not just about showing off his wide-ranging talents, but about fostering meaningful engagement with his audience. For Collier, live music is a communal experience, and he encouraged his fans to perform alongside him, often stopping to conduct the audience like a choir director.

Jacob Collier ran across the stage playing tambourine during his May 8 concert in Boston.

At just 28 years old, Collier has a diverse discography that refuses to fit into a single genre. “Djesse,” his ambitious four-album series, fuses jazz and classical in the first volume, transitions to acoustic and folk in the second, and leans into R&B and EDM influences in the third; the fourth album has yet to be released. At the Boston stop on his Djesse tour, he performed songs from across his released "Djesse" volumes as well as his 2016 debut album “In My Room.”

Collier and his band started things off with the upbeat R&B pop song “Count the People” from “Djesse Vol. 3.,” which quickly energized the crowd. With his band in lockstep, Collier slid around the stage in his sock feet, running between the drums and piano. Things slowed down as the band transitioned into the sensual R&B song “Feel,” which is lush with Collier’s signature layered harmonies and evocative lyrics — “Is there a place in the sky where the sky goes to sleep?” he sang.

Collier’s performance of his 2016 song “Hideaway” was an early standout in the concert — the crowd cheered as soon as he announced it. He sat down with his guitar, settling into the delicate rise and fall of the acoustic ballad which slowly gained power as it progressed. When Collier was most energized, he stood up from the piano bench and played the keys standing up, rocking back and forth to the beat and grinning all the while. “Hideaway” also showcased his vocals as he passionately sang in his upper range at the end of the song.

Among other instruments, Jacob Collier played piano during his concert.

“Who would be willing to get just a little bit funky?” Collier asked the crowd before breaking out his electric bass to perform “Time Alone With You,” a “Djesse Vol. 3” song featuring Daniel Caesar; the audience readily swayed along to its syncopated groove.

Like Collier, his band and backup singers also never failed to impress. The duet “In Too Deep” featured backup singer Alita Moses taking on Kiara Lede’s half of the song, and her powerhouse vocals — which Collier described on stage as a mix of Ariana Grande and Ella Fitzgerald — lent the song a new dimension. Another duet captivated the audience when surprise guest Lizzy McAlpine, a rising singer-songwriter, came out on stage to sing “Erase Me,” her new song featuring Collier.

Collier ended the concert with “All I Need” and “Sleeping on my Dreams,” two of his most upbeat songs from “Djesse Vol. 4.” With more excitement than ever, the crowd jumped up and down and swayed their arms in the air back and forth to the beat. Even after Collier left the stage, the audience wasn’t ready for the night to be over: They chanted for an encore until Collier gamely returned to the stage. He and his band gathered cozily on the bench at the center of the stage to perform the folksy, happy-go-lucky song “It Don’t Matter.” Collier then followed this up with an inspired rendition of “Blackbird” by The Beatles, infused with beatboxing throughout.

Collier chose to end the concert not with his own song or even with his own voice. Instead, he divided the audience into several sections and led the crowd in a five minute-plus choral performance. When he wanted the audience to go up a note, he simply pointed his finger upward, and when he wanted them to go down the scale, he pointed down. With this simple conducting method, he orchestrated beautiful harmonies, audience members’ voices blending and layering and echoing in The House of Blues. With this ending, Collier fostered a truly unique experience that allowed his fans to feel like they were a part of something bigger than themselves — like the concert was about them as much as it was about him.

Jacob Collier, the multi-instrumentalist wunderkind, burst onto the Arlington stage last week in a technicolor explosion of sound, light, and energy.

For two hours on a Sunday evening, Collier brought the fantastical sonic wonderland he inhabits to vibrant life. With a seven-piece band, an intensely colorful light show, and Collier’s now-signature interactive, sing-along performance style, the night felt nothing short of electric.

jacob collier concert tour

In his return to Santa Barbara — Collier bookended the UCSB Arts & Lectures 2023-24 season — he made his admiration for the city’s beauty evident, noting that despite the gray weather, he was still struck by the city’s charm. “That’s that Santa Barbara magic,” he said of the audience’s reception after a simple and sweet performance of his song “The Sun Is in Your Eyes,” — on a 10-string guitar, no less. Throughout the evening, he changed lyrics to “Santa Barbara” in a concerted effort to personalize the performance.

He spoke often about the power of connection and music’s ability to unite. “I think it’s such an important time to make music and such an important time to come together like this and sing and listen to each other and open each other up,” he said.

Dressed in brightly colored mismatched socks, colorful pants, and a purple bomber jacket, Collier galavanted across the stage in a flurry. Hopping from piano to guitar to synthesizer to bass to drums, Collier put his wide range of talents on full display in ways big and small.

The program itself focused primarily on the music from his most recent album, Djesse Vol. 4 , a collection of genre-bending, sometimes experimental-sounding tunes. Quiet moments, like “The Sun Is in Your Eyes,” and the track he co-wrote with Lizzy McAlpine and John Mayer, “Never Gonna Be Alone,” still felt radiant, full of his exuberant joy for the craft. Meanwhile, performances of songs like “Mi Corazón” and “100,000 Voices”  felt massive — strobe lights, booming bass, and all.

The stage was put to full use, with trees, vines, and bushes surrounding the platforms on which the band stood, turning the Arlington into a kind of musical garden. A large “J” hung high above the stage in bright and shimmering LED lights. The set played into the whimsy of Collier’s performance style — one that felt loose and always joyful.

The audience responded strongly. Two standing ovations marked the evening, not counting the rousing one at the show’s finale and during the extensive encore. Collier’s rendition of “Bridge over Troubled Water,” a synthy, pulsing cover that flexed his impressive vocal range, was met with rousing applause and got the crowd on their feet. The other came at the end of “Witness Me,” in which he instructed the audience to sing, transforming the audience into a choral section with the wave of his hand.

Collier emphasized collaboration throughout the evening, spotlighting the band supporting him often. His backup vocalists, Alita Moses, Lindsey Lomis, and Erin Bantlage, carried multiple songs, and there were plenty of roaring guitar solos from guitarist Ben Jones and thrilling percussion breaks from drummer Christian Euman to go around.

In an extensive encore, Collier rounded out the night with a lively performance of “In My Bones,” accompanied by his opening act, the hauntingly talented Kimbra . He followed up the encore with yet another, this time alone on stage with just the piano for two covers — “Somebody to Love” and “Moon River.”
