UB40 are a reggae and pop band from Birmingham, UK, formed in 1978. They have sold in excess of 70 million records.

Over the course of a career that’s now lasted for well over thirty years, UB40 have made a name for themselves as one of the most successful reggae acts in history. They’ve been successful the world over, but are probably best loved in their native United Kingdom, where they’ve had no fewer than fifty singles make the singles chart. In the U.S., meanwhile, they’ve had two huge number one successes, including “Red Red Wine” - probably their signature song - and their take on Elvis Presley’s classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.

It’s difficult to speak too clearly about the current lineup of the group, not least because it’s subject to legal proceedings; there’s now both a UB40 and a ‘UB40 Reunited’, with the latter band boasting original singer Ali Campbell, long-time trumpeter Astro and keyboardist Mickey Virtue. At the heart of the conflict is a spat between Campbell and his brother Duncan, who remains in the original UB40 - who, confusingly, are also still a going concern. Either way, it shouldn’t be allowed to overshadow an impressive legacy, the most important part of which is likely the example that UB40 set, with their diverse ethnic background, for other multi-cultural musical outfits in the UK.

Live reviews

UB40 is ALWAYS a treat for the senses live. Their sound is larger than life. How could it be anything less? With Veteran member Robin Campbell on rhythm and lead guitar who also sings with the deeper, melodic voice. Duncan Campbell giving the lead vocals all he's got, throw in some subtle smiles and a whole lot of sophisticated charm as well. Earl Falconer on bass, making a center stage appearance for a few songs of his own, including, Bulldozer, a fantastic new one from the current album "For The Many". Martin Meredith on saxophone playing straight to your soul, Lawrence Perry dazzling on trumpet, and humbly standing in for The one and only Brian Travers was Ian who really carried the music quite well and is an absolute gentleman. Norman Hassan gives you voice, percussion, character and some very fancy dance moves! Tony Mullings on keyboards lays down a very complicated array of sounds that infiltrate the music and make it what it is, he adds so much to the richness of their brand of Reggae. Jimmy Brown sets the tempo on the drums and gives this fine group of genuine, talented, musicians a wild ride to lay down all of their musical contributions to and float you away on rythm, melody, beat, love songs, politics, thought provoking, smile producing MUSIC! This is a band that if you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see live, and you miss it, you missed more than you will ever realize. They are so good to their true and loyal fans, both on stage and off. There's obvious reason why this is 40th anniversary tour, 40 years of material, all authentic (even the covers!) all genuine, all solid, and inspirational. UB40 is the finest entertainment I've ever had the privilege to experience. Go. See. Them.

UB40 is a British reggae/pop band that has been in the industry for over thirty years. Although their membership has changed over the years, they are still touring and entertaining fans around the world. They generally perform in large venues and outdoor festivals.

The entertainment is based on the music and vocals rather than special effects and dance routines. Their opening act is usually a DJ playing classic reggae songs to get the audience dancing and in the mood.

Their current lead singer Duncan Campbell brings a deeper, more soulful tone to the lyrics. UB40 is well-known for its covers as well as its original music. UB40 in concert plays all the old favorites and covers as well as their newer music. They have the sort of show that draws the audience in so that they are dancing and singing along with every song. The audience tends to be a little older these days, but after 15 minutes of singing and dancing, the years seem to melt away for the evening.

UB40 plays for two solid hours. The show is short on the stories and preaching and long on the singing and music. The band is not out there to promote some message or view but to help the audience have a great time. They usually back-load the second half of the show with classics to leave everyone with a good feeling at the end.

British reggae/pop band UB40 now hold an iconic status due to the timeless quality of their music which achieved huge commercial success in the UK during the 80s and 90s. Still touring to date to both the original fans and new converts who enjoy the band's music.

Perhaps looking for an alternative to the grey skies of Birmingham, the group developed a sun drenched sound inspired by the reggae greats including Bob Marley as well as their multi-cultural surrounding which exposed them to a huge variety of music. The influences remain present throughout their discography and now their live show continues to include soulful backing vocalists and a variety of reggae instruments.

The band enjoyed a huge amount of hits during their peak so filtering these into a succinct live show is a feat however they make great decisions with 'Cherry Oh Baby' and 'How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?' which both receive big cheers. There is no inclusion of their #1 cover and collaboration with Chrissie Hynde 'I Got You Babe' tonight but this is compensated with a huge singalong to 'Red, Red Wine'. A classic act with a timeless discography of hits.

This was a first time too see them in concert. It was their 40 year anniversary and clearly, they were past their heyday and prime. They did great on doing their big hits like Red Wine or Falling in Love. But at times it felt a bit mechanical, they are great professional but improvisational part was lacking. The singers are good, but a bit out of shape. My wife felt some were not sexy or lacked charisma. They could use some female singers in the mix. The DJ before the main show was O.K. but not great. The waiting time for them to come onstage was 2 hours which is too long for standing room only. Overall, good experience but not great.

Beyond separation of band members and Campbell brothers, you can expect the very best of the new / old UB40 crew : amazing sound close to the one of the studios, amazing similar and tainted voices and this perfect matching of melodies, emotions and instrumental performances which made their worldwide success. Listening to UB40 is like an out of time moment and takes you to a real soul-searching.Everything looks like obvious, smooth and easy-going when you listen to the music these incredible artists just perform in a perfect way because absolutely theirs. To be shared limitless !

Totally agree with this review .. myself & 5 others were totally gutted, after having seen UB40 on tour B4 .. we have always been entertained from start to finish .. The supporting Dj was rubbish (im sure many will agree) in comparison to likes of Maxi Priest.. I felt we had been miss lead in to thinking I was seeing UB40 , Yo find the lead singer out of tune .. Good Try ... but will never pay or recommend ... As was said by a Ex Fan of yours ... It was like Culture Club without Boy George .... UB40 is not UB40 with out Ali Cambell ... What more can be said xx Rant Over

UB40 were fantastic! Got tickets for my stepdads early Xmas present and he is one of their biggest fans. We waited over an hour outside as they were late finishing a meet and greet I heard, but we got standing views right near the front! The stage was great and the lighting and sound awesome for the venue, not to mentioned UB40 being awesome! Only downfall which no one else can help is two lots of two women getting too drunk and ruining it for everyone, one being sick all over the floor and the others trying to start a fight. Overall brill night.

In celebration of four-time Grammy nominated UB40's 45th Anniversary, the band announces their upcoming "UB45" U.S. summer tour, kicking off on Independence Day, July 4, in Camden, New Jersey.

The legendary reggae-pop band will bring fans special live performances of their worldwide hit singles to the stage with "Red Red Wine," "Food For Thought," "(I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You," and many more. UB40 will also be releasing a new album this summer titled UB45, with new songs and reworked classics (release date TBA). Check local listings for UB40 shows with special guests including Maxi Priest, Inner Circle, Third World and Big Mountain.

With additional dates being added, the national tour will include stops coast-to-coast in Westbury, New York at The Space on July 6 and in Los Angeles, California at the Microsoft Theater on July 21; in addition to Boston, Nashville, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, and more. Tickets are available at UB40.GLOBAL.

Says guitarist/vocalist Robin Campbell, "We love playing the U.S., and celebrating our 45th year and having a new album makes our return even more exciting."

Adds lead singer, Matt Doyle, "Touring the States last year was an absolute dream come true for me, and now I just can't wait to get back out there. Most of all I can't wait for the U.S fans to hear some of our new tunes! I think they're going to love UB45!"

With more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, UB40 members Jimmy Brown (drums), Robin Campbell (guitar/vocals), Earl Falconer (bass/vocals), Norman Lamont Hassan (percussion/vocals), Martin Meredith (keyboards/WX7/saxophone), Tony Mullings (keyboards), Laurence Parry (trumpet/flugal/trombone), Ian Thompson (saxophone) - and lead vocalist Matt Doyle - are an English reggae and pop multi-cultural band originally formed in Birmingham, England. With more than 50 singles in the U.K. Singles Chart, the group has been established since 1978.

UB40's lead singer, Matt Doyle, joined the band in 2021, taking over for a retired Duncan Campbell after Doyle's group, KIOKO, opened for UB40 at The Royal Albert Hall in 2018 -- and then supported them on UB40's subsequent UK tour and European tours.

Doyle's lead vocals are featured on the track "You Don't Call Anymore" from from UB40's collaboration album BIGGA BAGGARIDDIM, released in 2021; and last summer's "Champion" , the first single from the forthcoming UB45 album and official song of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which also featured Gilly G and Dapz on the Map, two emcees also from Birmingham.

Originating as group of young friends from Birmingham with working-class origins to creating the world's most successful reggae band, UB40 has gone on to becoming four-time Grammy nominees for "Best Reggae Album," selling millions of records, and spending a combined 11 plus years on the UK album charts with more than 50 UK hit singles including "(I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You," "Red Red Wine," "I Got You Babe (Ft. UB40’s Ali Campbell says the tour will go ahead in memory of bandmate Astro

The musician passed away after a short illness in November last year.

The latest UB40 tour is set to begin this month, and Campbell has said it will be going ahead in memory of his departed friend and bandmate of over four decades, Astro.

Speaking about the decision, he said: “I can’t wait to get back on stage and see all our wonderful fans. It’s going to be incredibly difficult without Astro by my side.

“Remembering Astro, let the music play on.”

Astro, more formally known as Terence Wilson, was one of the founding members of UB40 and was part of the band for more than 30 years.

He sadly died in November 2021 following a “short illness”.

In a statement on Twitter following the news, bandmate Campbell wrote: “We are absolutely devastated and completely heartbroken.”

UB40 have topped the UK charts three times and sold 70 million records worldwide. They are probably best known for their iconic cover of Neil Damond’s ‘Red Red Wine’ and for their version of ‘I Got You Babe’ with Chrissie Hynde.

In 2013, Astro and Campbell formed their own breakaway group, UB40 featuring Ali Campbell and Astro, and had already started playing some concerts in 2021 with plans to tour together this year.

It was unknown whether it would still be going ahead after news of Astro’s passing.

Ali Campbell has now confirmed he will be touring alone in memory of his late bandmate, and the tour is due to start on 25 February in London at the o2.

Other stops on the tour include Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena, Brighton Centre, Birmingham Utilita Arena and finishing in Sheffield City Hall on Sunday 6th March.

With accolades including an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement, alongside GRAMMY and BRIT Award nominations, as well as a recent induction into the Music Walk of Fame on Camden High Street, Ali has been recognised for his incredible mark on bringing Reggae music to the masses

The new dates come after the triumphant sold-out arena tour that visited arenas earlier this year.

Some of the band's biggest hits include ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, ‘Many Rivers to Cross’, ‘Kingston Town’, ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You’, ‘I Got You Babe’, and the quintessential, ‘Red Red Wine', which topped the charts in both the US and the UK upon its release in 1983.

UB40 Featuring Ali Campbell has sold over 70 million records worldwide, and the group is a reformation of the original band that came about in the late 1970s.

Band member Astro - whose real name was Terence Oswald Wilson - passed away in November 2021 at the age of 64 after a "very short illness".

He played percussion, trumpet and sang and rapped in UB40.

Tickets are on general sale Friday 13 September at 10am from MyTicket.co.uk.

UB40 Tour This December In Celebration Of A Momentous 45 Years In The Industry

9th november 2022.

UB40 founders Robin Campbell , James Brown , Earl Falconer , Norman Hassan , long-time members Martin Meredith , Laurence Parry along with Tony Mullings , Ian Thompson and Matt Doyle , who was announced as the band’s new lead singer in 2021 following Duncan Campbell ’s retirement, will start their 45th Anniversary with a celebratory arena tour in the UK and Ireland this December playing Castlebar, Belfast, Leeds, London’s iconic Wembley Arena and a special hometown performance at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena.

The UB45 tour celebrates the band’s 45th anniversary, an upcoming album of the same will also be released early in 2023. Tickets for the tour are available here .

The ‘UB45’ tour is a must-attend event for any UB40 lover. New frontman Matt Doyle will take the UB40 live experience one step further.

As fans have come to expect, the tour promises to be a true UB40 fest – a celebration of the band’s timeless classics and fan favourites, alongside their latest material. Audiences will be treated to a set list packed with incredible hits, such as Food for Thought, Kingston Town, (I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You .

The band will also play tracks from the forthcoming new UB45 album including the recently re-recorded double-platinum, chart-topping single Red Red Wine . The band’s performance of the 1983 hit at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony was a stand-out highlight and was viewed by an estimated global TV audience of over one billion people.

Red Red Wine was the second single to be released from UB40’s upcoming album UB45 and follows Champion, which was the official Commonwealth Games song. UB45 will be released early 2023. The album is the ultimate celebration of UB40 past and present featuring new original material.

UB40 are one of the UK’s most successful British groups of all time, achieving three UK Number Ones – Red, Red Wine, I Got You Babe (ft. Chrissie Hynde) and (I Can’t Help ) Falling In Love with You – not to mention 17 Top 10 singles and more than 50 UK hit singles. The band have sold 100 million records while taking their smooth Reggae and Pop blend to all corners of the globe, with hits such as ‘Food For Thought’, ‘Cherry Oh Baby’ and ‘Kingston Town’ . Among the accolades, the band won an Ivor Novello Award, was nominated for the BRIT Award for Best British Group in 1984 and the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times between 1987 and 2006.

Since forming in 1978, UB40 have transcended their working-class origins to become the most successful reggae band in the world. Older numbers such as King (about the legacy of American Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King) and One In Ten (about unemployment in the UK) which feature on the tour are as timely today as when they were first sung in 1980 and 1981.

Robin Campbell , Guitarist and Vocalist says: “Our 45th anniversary doesn’t bear thinking about, but the celebrations will be great fun starting in the UK arenas in December. These shows and the new album represent our brotherhood and celebrating our history but also taking our next step together as a band. We are pushing new boundaries and looking to the future with our frontman Matt Doyle, and we can’t wait to show the world how good he is with us and how much he’s come on in the last year”.

Come and join us to celebrate 45 years of UB40 and what is going to be one massive party! Tickets for the tour are available here .

Big Love UB40
