Live reviews

In the spirit of full transparency, this review is a copy of the review published on the"Radio Creme Brulee" blog.

To say that multiple Grammy Award winner Imogen Heap is one of the most fascinating brands in music to have emerged in the last two decades would be quite the understatement. I refer to her as a brand and not merely as an artist because her versatility is not constrained to the world of writing, recording, and producing music. In the realm of recorded music, she has been constantly stretching the boundaries of her unique sonic template. Her vocals flit from breathy to whispery to ethereal. Interwoven harmonies, acoustic instrumentation laced with electronic embellishments (and not the type that feel inhuman or lack warmth), and breathtaking melodies are just a few of the elements that define her dreamy and richly textured soundscape. While evolving her sound from the unshackled experimentation on her debut album “I Megaphone” (an anagram of her name) to the commercial sensitivity of her breakout album “Details” as part of the duo Frou Frou (with producer Guy Sigsworth) to the unabashed inclusion of eastern elements on her 2009 album “Ellipse” (especially on the album’s lead single “First Train Home”), she has also become a tech entrepreneur and a music industry thought leader. She is relentlessly driven to address some of the key structural inadequacies of the modern music industry. This is what a music brand needs to look like in 2019 and Imogen plays that critical role incredibly well. Anyone that believes that pop music and unpretentious intellectualism are mutually exclusive need not look any further than Imogen Heap to challenge that misguided view.

The opportunity to see Imogen live has evaded me ever since she rose to prominence as part of Frou Frou (named after the French word for the rustle of silk) and as a solo artist. Hence, when I heard that she was going on tour and NOT to promote a new album (even though she has completed one as recently as last year but has not released it yet), I knew I could not miss this. I have always believed that artists do far more justice to their back-catalog in a concert when they are NOT promoting a new album. Tours centered around a new album tend to favor newer songs over sonic gems that cemented the status of an artist in contemporary pop culture. Imogen’s Mycelia (named after her blockchain-based music-sharing program) world tour is special since Guy Sigsworth (her former collaborator from the one-album duo Frou Frou) is also a part of it. While Imogen has carved out a successful personal branding for herself outside of Frou Frou, she is inextricably linked to the cool and stylish elegance of the “Details” album by Frou Frou in the minds of many casual fans – many of whom wondered why there was no follow-up album to “Details”. It appears that Imogen has made a special effort to cater to both the ardent and casual ends of her fan spectrum through her setlist which features a non-trivial dosage of the “Details” album (including the album’s breakout hit “Let Go” – which featured on the Garden State movie soundtrack).

It appeared that from the first moment of the concert, Imogen Heap seemed intent on turning the standard concert format on its head. She was the first of her band to walk on to the stage with a pleasant and unassuming greeting of “hellooooo” to the audience promptly at 8 p.m. This is in stark contrast to every concert I have attended wherein the concert usually starts at least 20 or 30 minutes after the scheduled time and the entrance of the artist (especially one with a caliber comparable to that of Imogen Heap) is usually very diva-like. Her quirky dress was as much a manifestation of her personality as it was a reflection of her longstanding penchant for crowdsourcing blended with a spirit of patronage for other artists. She wore a dress designed by a Mexican dress designer living in New York City. Apparently, her concert attire is designed by a local designer in each of the cities on the Mycelia world tour. This was the first of several deviations from age-old concert norms.

Imogen Heap is acutely aware that her fame in America began with Frou Frou. To this end, she celebrated the origins of her American fame via the concert’s opener – a new downtempo track by Frou Frou titled “Guitar Song”. The song starts off as a mellow and stripped down guitar-driven track and its additional sonic layers start to emerge on the goosebump-inducing chorus. The song’s most sublime moment is its Middle 8 in which Imogen sings “Heaven will be the moment that you wake up with me next to me”. Needless to say, “Guitar Song” makes for a worthy opener for a concert in which Imogen showcases some of the finest moments of a career that has spanned over two decades. It was also the precursor to the second deviation from the standard concert format. She went right ahead and introduced her band to the crowd. This tradition typically happens towards the end of a concert.

I have always believed that for a songwriter, the embryo of a song is a story. Imogen Heap generously shared the genesis of most of her songs as she introduced each one of them. The most noteworthy of them was her introduction of “First Train Home” – a song that describes her desire to take the first train home while being a reluctant attendee at a party. This context undoubtedly sheds light on a memorable lyric from the song’s Middle 8 in which she says “So what? I’m not that much fun to be with“. While this is not an unusual tradition, Imogen Heap gave the audience a far greater glimpse into the origins of her songs than most artists do.

Early in her set, Imogen enthusiastically shared a demo of her highly acclaimed Mi.Mu gloves – a wearable musical instrument that allows the artist to connect sound to his or her movements. It was fascinating to watch sound being manipulated in a live environment. These gloves are an integral part of Imogen’s performance art. The audience was enraptured as she used them in each of her songs to commandeer the dreamy and dramatic sonic elements of her soundscape with graceful gestures that could easily be mistaken for exemplary choreography with no role outside the purely visual. These gloves have made Imogen the darling of many tech conferences across the globe.

Being an artist that is also a thought leader in a music industry plagued with a host of challenges makes Imogen Heap uniquely positioned to answer pointed questions around some of the self-defeating music industry dynamics. To this end, Imogen welcomed questions from the audience and provided thought-provoking answers. It is fair to say that the audience most likely walked out feeling smarter and more well-informed than they were at the beginning of the concert. She also pointed out that innovation that revolves solely around streaming does not cater to the vast majority of artists that cannot make a living solely from streaming.

Her setlist appeared to showcase every slice of her staggering vocal range that left the audience spellbound multiple times. The finest performances of the evening includes those of “Let Go” (from the Garden State Movie soundtrack), “It’s good to be in love“, a vocoder-free rendition of her breakout hit “Hide and Seek“, “Goodnight and go“, and “Entanglement” (especially the achingly beautiful cello section by Zoe Keating). In fact, she ought to release live versions of “Let Go” and “It’s good to be in love” – as they were far superior to the studio versions of the songs.

After commenting on how utterly predictable and pointless the pre-encore exit of an artist from the stage is, she concluded the concert with just her and Guy Sigsworth performing the minimalist Frou Frou track “Dumbing down of love”. Their embrace before they took a bow to thank the audience was heartwarming and a nod to a creative partnership that put Imogen Heap on the map.

Perfection in a concert is an illusory dream and this one undoubtedly had a few missed opportunities. While the concert’s setlist featured quite a few songs from Frou Frou’s “Details” album, songs such as “Must Be Dreaming” and “Hear Me Out” (featuring songwriting input from legendary hit producer Brian Eno) were conspicuous by their absence. The setlist’s most noteworthy omission was that of “Just for now” – which features some of the most beautiful harmonies wherein each vocal component of the harmony has been contributed solely by Imogen Heap.

Despite the missed opportunities, Imogen Heap proved that she is a potent force to be reckoned with. She is a bright star in a music industry that does not even aspire for the greatness that she envisions creatively and commercially (for the music business at large and not for herself). The legacy that stems from her musical and technological endeavors will undoubtedly be a milestone for the music industry and she will be the subject of many studies in the future on artists that have been catalysts for a vision and purpose beyond themselves. The fact that she is not a household name is one of many manifestations of the issues of the modern music industry. That being said, she does offer more than a glimmer of hope and I can barely wait to see what she embarks upon next.

Imogen Heap is like no other. In her musical style, her on-stage presence, her costumes and the way she creates and performs her music - she is a truly unique artist. Part folk-pop singer, part electronic dream weaver, Imogen combines flowing vocals, piano, guitar, organ, synthesizers and more to create a haunting ambient sound. She demands attention as soon as she enters the stage, dressed in a glorious ball gown and towering high at six foot tall (six foot three if she has adorned her hair with feathers). Looking Amazonian yet dressed like a regency princess, she addresses the crowd like old friends, sometimes sipping from a cup of tea, showcasing an enviable sense of humor and show stopping smile. She is warm, engaging and happy to share her process with her fans. Imogen has been compared to some great female vocalists such as Kate Bush, Annie Lennox and PJ Harvey, however the way she creates her music is exceptionally individual, layering electronic beats with non musical sounds. Songs such as "Hide and Seek," "Goodnight and Go" and "Headlock" are some of her best known work, but look out for "Closing In" and "Just for Now" from the 2009 "Speak for Yourself" album.

Unique show where she took questions from the audience between each song. She's one of a kind - a rarity - exceptionally talented, a creative genius. Producer, composer, vocalist, technologist, and advocate for small artists' intellectual property rights and protections. Musical, comical, open, and genuine. She's rejoined with Guy (Frou Frou) and other exceptional musicians and is a non stop source of inspiring and refreshing music. Thank you, Imogen Heap.

Imogen is fascinating to hear live. Her voice is so unique and the music was wonderful. However, she took as many questions as she sang songs and most of the questions we found insane, though of course Imogen answered in interesting ways.

We'd have preferred a few pre-screened questions, no intermission, but all of the wonderful music.

And yet, it's Imogen's show and we love her, so no biggie.

Seeing her live is magical. Between her use of the mi.mu gloves where Imogen is able to mix sounds as she performs and her gorgeous vocals, this was a stunning concert.

Imogen Heap announces tour to support “Ellipse”

Heap released the critically acclaimed Ellipse (RCA Records) in late August. The album debuted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200, #1 on the Internet Album Chart and #2 on the Digital Album chart. The release is Heap’s first Top 5 record and marks her highest-ever chart position.

Heap performed “First Train Home,” the first single from Ellipse, on The Late Show With David Letterman in August. This summer, the single was named “Pick of the Week” by USA Today, saying: “…Heap offers a shimmering, percolating electro-pop soundscape that is grounded by her warm, breathy vocals.” Wired Magazine called it “…her densest, richest work yet” with The Wall Street Journal adding: “Ellipse is modern pop full of invention.”

Heap began writing the 13 tracks featured on Ellipse the same day she finished her tour for Speak For Yourself, her breakthrough 2005 album. The songs on Ellipse began to take shape on the road as Heap traveled from Hawaii, Fiji, Tasmania, Japan, China and Thailand. The artist then returned home to London, where she continued work on the record. Remaining true to her do-it-yourself ethos, she built her new studio in the “playroom” of her old family home (an 18th century ‘oval villa’ restored by her parents) on the outskirts of London.

HELP IMOGEN RAISE $100,000 FOR CHARITY

As you may know, Imogen recorded a live improvised song at her London show back in February. The audience got to help choose the key, time signature, and speed of the song - it was then sold online with all of the proceeds going to local London charity Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Imogen has decided to repeat this idea at each show on her upcoming North American tour with the aim of raising a total of $100,000 for local charities by the end of the tour.

We'd like you to tell us which charity you think Imogen should support in your city and why...

Prop Farm: Collin Morikawa drawing plenty of attention from sharps, oddsmakers at the Memorial

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

We've spoken about it recently and we're really smack-dab in the middle of a tremendous stretch right now. This week it’s off to Muirfield Village in Ohio for the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday for another Signature Event once again leading up to a major championship, which will be followed by yet another Signature Event, the Travelers Championship.

Personally, I am very much enjoying this run of high-profile golf. But how about the oddsmakers?

"Very good handle this week," said Thomas Gable, Director of Race and Sports at The Borgata in New Jersey. Timing is everything and the PGA TOUR's move to place Signature Events adjacent to majors provides a great boost in interest - and that carries over to the betting window.

"Golf handle continues to pick up," said long-time sportsbook operations manager in Las Vegas, Jeffrey Benson. "The Signature Events and major championships are tremendous for business."

Hall of Fame bookmaker Chris Andrews has noticed it long-term. "Golf handle is good. We're up 22% versus last year."

Interest for Scottie Scheffler continues this week as he returns to action at the Memorial where he has finished third two years in a row. "Scheffler, despite the short price at +350, is taking a lot of action in the outright market," noted Gable.

BetMGM Senior Data Analyst Drew O'Dell adds, "Scheffler is No. 1 at BetMGM in ticket count percentage and is our largest liability. He is responsible for 30.4% of the handle."

From speaking to multiple oddsmakers, it’s clear that there is action piling up on Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, as the latter makes his first start as a major champion. But there’s also plenty of attention on Collin Morikawa, who continues to round into form.

“A lot of love for Collin Morikawa outright,” said Jeff Sherman, whose shop lists Scheffler, Schauffele and Morikawa among its most-bet players. “The sharps are on Andrew Putnam at a triple-digit price."

"Keegan Bradley has some support in the outright market, including one large wager in particular,” added Sherman’s boss, Jay Kornegay. “We've also seen some fliers on Will Zalatoris. Other long shots getting attention are Eric Cole, Cam Davis and Jake Knapp."

Last week here in the Prop Farm, we spoke about trying to find "diamonds in the rough." It did not work out for me personally, as Robert MacIntyre was unfortunately not a part of my harvest. It appears this week however, I am in the minority once again. Morikawa is absolutely intriguing this week, with the way he has been playing lately and his affinity for Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses - but I ended up staying away from him - as well as Scheffler, McIlroy, Schauffele, and Hovland.

The shortest-priced player I landed on for an outright win was Russell Henley (+4000 at BetMGM Sportsbook). From here I went with even longer shots, playing Sam Burns (+4500), Bradley (+5000), Alex Noren (+5500), Shane Lowry (+5500), Tom Hoge (+8000) and Kurt Kitayama (+10000). While I looked at a number of different metrics this week in my handicap this week, I honed in on three particular skill sets: Strokes Gained: Approach, Scoring on par 4s ranging from 450-500 yards, and Scrambling. Each of my selections, for the most part, excels in these areas.

I rarely play the First Round Leader market, although my last trip down that road was with Schauffele at the PGA Championship for a winner, when the San Diego State Aztec opened with a 62 at Valhalla. Again, with golf riding an elevated wave, I too contributed to the overall increased handle and tried my hand in the First Round Leader market again this week. I took four of my outright selections to get off to a hot start: Burns, Henley, Hoge and Noren. In handicapping this market, I like to look at SG: Approach, Birdie Percentage, Bogey Avoidance, First Round Scoring Average and SG: Putting. Each of these players fares well in these areas.

"Hideki Matsuyama (+3300) has taken some action for First Round Leader," said Gable. Matsuyama is a former champion here, winning in 2014.

O'Dell reported that a familiar name is at the top of the heap of tickets once again.

"Scheffler leads the ticket count percentage for First Round Leader at 10.3%,” said O’Dell. "He is followed by Schaufflee (6.5%), Hovland (5.0%), Byeong Hun An (4.6%) and McIlroy (4.3%)," O'Dell continued.

Here in Las Vegas, I played Tommy Fleetwood (+100) over Justin Thomas in a head-to-head matchup – and it's reassuring to know that the man behind the counter supports that position. "I don't have that matchup posted but I can't argue with the number you got. I would have taken it too!," exclaimed Gable.

Finally, I had to consult a professional on our side of the window, Rufus Peabody. Peabody has been a successful sports bettor for years, and when I asked if the fan in him gets caught up in this run of marquee events and if his betting patterns change at all - or if his volume increases, Peabody offered a yes and a no.

"The markets get bigger with the bigger events and the offerings increase - the menu, so yes, so too does our volume oftentimes,” Peabody said. “But the process does not change. We aren't stretching more bets just because it is a Signature Event."

Peabody’s positions this week include Scheffler, Schauffele and McIlroy – but a casual bettor must understand that Peabody is all about the number.

"I make Schauffele +900 to win this week and I was able to find something higher than that, so we took a little of it,” he said. “Same with McIlroy, who I make around +1100 and Scheffler, who my number is +380 to win it this week. If I'm able to find a better price, we'll grab some."

What about some of the longer shots this week?

"I like Bradley. I think Sam Burns is a good bet at the right price and we played some Kitayama too,” Peabody said after hearing some of my selections. “He has a great ball flight for this course. This is a good high ball flight course - and Bradley hits one of the highest balls in this week's field.”

When I asked if there were any prop bets or head-to-head matchups that he was especially keen on this week, Peabody gave very much the professional bettor answer.

"Sure we have some matchup bets, but the prices have moved now and they no longer provide an edge according to my numbers,” said Peabody. “It is not necessarily liking Player A to beat Player B - but rather, Player A at a certain price over Player B makes good betting sense.”
