“ We had an awesome trip! I understand the weather made it very tough hunting for most but thankfully we both scored on good bulls. Camp life was great from the food to the conversation. Horses were exceptional as well. Could not have done it without them. This hunt is the real deal. It is tough but a great experience that I would recommend to anyone! Heath Till Client
“ Words cannot express the amount of fun and excitement we had on our trip. Everything was first class from the horses packing in to the accommodations in camp. The guides were top notch and done everything in their ability to put us on bulls. We all felt like you ran a first class wilderness hunting camp. Troy Client
“ The hunt was great and was all I expected and more. The accommodations, cook and wranglers were great people. Nate was a excellent guide and went to all lengths to help us get an elk. Terry Lutz and Larry Paul Clients
“ The hunt was outstanding and the guides and camp staff were exceptional. Everyone worked hard the food was great and so was the company. The country was beautiful a little snowy for that time of year though. Again thanks for a great time in camp and in Cody. Eugene Holloway Client

We hunt a very large elk country in north Jackson Hole which includes more National Park boundary than any other outfitter in Wyoming. Including also the Teton Wilderness, Wineger Hole Wilderness, and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. Plus we can hunt from the south end of the Grand Teton National Park Boundary all the way east to the head of the Gros Ventre River drainage.
The Jackson Hole elk herd is managed at 11,000 head of elk and that is our main base of elk, but because of the vastness and having access to multiple elk areas in one big block, it gives us the opportunity to harvest bulls that migrate in from Dubois, WY winter range, Sand Creek winter range in Idaho, and the upper Green River winter range and feed ground from the Pinedale side. When this is all layed out with the Grand Teton Park and Yellowstone Park boundaries at this level, the three wilderness areas along with the Gros Ventre River drainage and four different elk herds commingling creates a consistent pattern on bulls harvested and opportunity for trophy class bulls which creates a portfolio second to none.
We own 150 head of horses and mules that get used during the summer months so they are in shape and hunter user friendly. Plenty of good quality hunting horses and mules play a big part in our success. Five family members guide elk hunters every fall and many of the others have been with Swift Creek Outfitters for years. The women family members do all the organizing and stay on top of the part that does not pertain to elk guiding.
With 36 years of elk only outfitter experience, big elk country, high end elk hunting ponies, seasoned elk guides, and the Swift Creek family members plus our great staff, is why we call ourselves Jackson Hole’s Premier Elk Outfitter.
Deposits and Payments
A $2000 deposit is required to book any of the hunts above. Because of the demand from the day the hunt is committed to with the outfitter, the client has 14 days to have the deposit on the books unless other arrangements have been made. The hunts above are booked on a first come first serve basis. The first week of March a letter will be sent out pertaining to a $2500 2nd payment towards your hunt plus release forms to be read, signed, and sent back along with the 2nd payment. The 2nd payment and release forms will be due by March 20th (only pertains to the client who is applying for the current year application period).
The elk licenses will be drawn on May 20th. The final letter will go out to the client on the 1st week of June, will include final invoice and final necessary information pertaining to your hunt. The final invoice will be due July 15th unless other arrangements have been made. Listed prices are valid for 2024, prices subject to change on booked hunts and beyond.
No refunds will be made for cancelled hunts rather it be for the year you apply for a license or for hunts booked in advance. All money is refundable if license is not drawn or you can roll funds to future hunts if there is an opening. No refunds or adjustments for late arrivals, early departures, or no shows.
We handle all applications through our desk. On the first week in December a letter will be sent out obtaining an information sheet for the client to fill out and send back by the first week of January along with proper funds. After receiving the information sheet and funds, Swift Creek Outfitters will apply your information and funds into our outfitter portal, provided by the Wyoming Game & Fish Dept. We advise you return the packet as soon as possible in case of a mail glitch. We will want the packet here by Jan. 15th so that we’re not up against the deadline on Jan. 31st.
PREFERENCE POINTS
Preference points are needed to obtain licenses in Wyoming. The regional elk areas that was passed by the Wyoming Game & Fish commission and the special elk license price increase that was passed by the Wyoming legislature will have a major impact on preference point creep.
Swift Creek Outfitters expects to draw 100% every year. Individual preference point holders are still going to have to be very responsible in obtaining a preference point every year before the Oct. 31 deadline.
AIRPORTS AND TRAVEL
We will pick you up free of charge from the Jackson Hole Airport and take you to the trailhead and back. Most hunters flying into Jackson Hole will use a taxi from the airport to the suggested hotel, and that is where we usually meet our clients. It is always better to fly or drive in a day early and get some rest before your hunt begins.
It is always better to book your flights a few months earlier to ensure a better rate, especially if you are flying into Jackson Hole. The Jackson Hole Airport is the most convenient fly-in destination. Just make sure to start booking flights as soon as you draw your tag.
TAXIDERMY AND MEAT PROCESSING
We can suggest a good Taxidermist if need be, but we recommend you taking your trophy home if possible. Meat processing can be done in Jackson within 12 hours of your flight departure. All boxes are weighed out in 70 lb. boxes and dry iced ready for travel. Your meat will be cut exactly the way you want it and packaged for the amount of people in your family.
All big game hunting guides have a lot of responsibility and hard work every day. They depend on tips to make guiding worthwhile and to ensure us to have experienced guides each fall. We encourage 10 to 15 percent of hunt price for your guide, $150-$200 for the camp cook, and $100 for wranglers and packers.
GRIZZLY BEAR PEPPER SPRAY
If you are booked on any of the Archery Hunts, we advise that you purchase a can of Pepper Spray. Rifle hunters can also have trouble with Grizzlies, but we let them decide on whether they want to make the purchase or not. Most Pepper Spray canisters with holsters cost $40-$50 and can be purchased at almost any sports store.
Wounded Animal Policy
If you draw blood whether you and your guide find the animal or not, that is your animal. We will do everything possible to find and retrieve, but another animal will not be taken.

Full service guided hunts, elk and mule deer hunts….
Read an article on the Ten Commandments of Horseback Hunting by Randy Palmer in the Oct 2008 issue of Western Horseman.
Hunting is what we do best. Hunting is what Over the Hill Outfitters is founded upon. We live to hunt. If hunting is what you love to do, this trip is for you. There is nothing quite like being in the high wilderness after a three inch snow, tracking a small herd of elk through the whiteness, knowing that they are just across the next ridge. Your heart beats, your nose filters the air, your eyes scan every inch of the horizon. You are as alive as is possible. You are in the hunt.
Riding from Camp before First Light.
We specialize in full service, guided elk hunts in Southwest Colorado’s Weminuche Wilderness.. Most of these take place in the Florida River Basin where we hunt the subalpine to alpine environment surrounding timberline. This is a huge area where you can hunt for five days without ever hitting the same place twice. However, we hunt wherever the elk are. That’s the golden rule of hunting: always hunt where the elk are. We know the Florida River Basin better than anyone. We are in the area from the time the snow lets us, till the snow drives us out. Sometimes longer. There is a resident herd of approximately 600 head of elk who do the same.
Frank’s 6X6 Rifle Bull.
Our camps are similar to those of our Pack Trips, with woodstove heated wall tents, cots with pads to sleep on, and a chef to prepare incredible meals. Everything is provided except for your personal and hunting gear. We strive to meet your every need within the realm of the wilderness area that we are visiting.
All of our hunts are strictly first class with one guide for each hunter to maximize your opportunity for success. Other options are available. Our guides join us because of their love of hunting. They are skilled in horses, outdoor living, people skills and of course hunting. We at Over the Hill Outfitters have overwhelming pride in our guides. We can assure you that they are of the highest quality and are dedicated to providing you with the best hunt possible.
Archery Hunting…
Paul’s 6X6 Archery Bull with Guide, Randy Palmer.
Our favorite hunt is the Bow Hunt. This is quintessential hunting where man and animal are engaged in the ultimate experience of nature. This is the most exciting time to be immersed in the hunt. The elk are in rut, the weather is a little bit nicer (usually) and there are a lot less hunters out. The elk are often in larger herds. A herd of 300 elk may not be the easiest to hunt, but it is something to behold. Join us at Over the Hill Outfitters for the bow hunt of a lifetime. You won’t regret it.
Tommy’s 6X6 Archery Bull.
Blackpowder Hunting…
Paul’s 6X6 Blackpowder Bull.
The same can be said of the Black Powder Hunt. It too is one of our favorites, with the season coinciding with the archery season. This time of year the elk are generally in the rut adding excitement and the ability to call in bulls. This hunt is a test for the primitive weapon hunter and one of the most enjoyable hunts that we offer.
Lambert’s Highcountry Blackpowder Buck
Ricky’s 6X6 Blackpowder Bull.
Rifle Hunting…
Syd’s 4X4 Rifle Bull.
The combination rifle season is the highlight of the year. This is the hunt we’ve all been waiting for. Often times the elk are still in the tail end of rut, letting us know where they are. Other times they know that they are being hunted, making this truly a hunt. Either way, we aim to provide you with the best possible hunt. Come join us. We know you will be glad you did.

GUIDED HORSEBACK WILDERNESS DEER & ELK HUNTS
This hunt is available for both Archery and Rifle Seasons. A mix of private land, forest service and wilderness area will be hunted. Horseback hunting will be our primary means of transportation, but 4×4 and hiking will be used to access some areas. The majority of hunting will be done on public land. Lodging and meals are provided in our high-end lodge adjacent to the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. In some cases, the option to spike camp for a night may be available. You can focus on several species (including elk, mule deer, and bears – based on season/tag availability) or focus on a single species.
Lodge hunts are afternoon arrival, 5 full days of hunting, morning departure.
Success Rates, Tag Availability and Other Information
Success Rates: Bear- Dedicated 5 day hunt – 75%+. As an “opportunity” tag added on to a deer/elk focused hunt – 20-25%
Elk- All of these hunts are true wilderness hunts where being in good shape, being able to ride a few hours each day and being able to bare inclement weather will pay off with the hunt of a lifetime. Rifle hunts average 40-80%+ shot opportunity on legal bulls for those that hunt every morning and afternoon/night of their hunt. Archery hunts run roughly 1/2 the success rate of rifle hunts. The biggest variable is weather and the hunter’s persistence. The majority of bulls are medium sized, 4-6 point animals. Roughly 1/10th of our harvested bulls score 300+.
Mule Deer- During 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons our hunters with deer tags have 50-80% shot opportunity on bucks. 4th Season rifle hunters generally have a 90-100% opportunity to harvest a mature buck. Dedicated muzzleloader hunters will have a 50-70% chance of getting an opportunity at a mature buck. Archery deer hunts are highly variable on the hunter’s shooting abilities. Shooting opportunities under 70 yards are 60-70% on a five day deer-focused hunt.
The primary focus of these hunts will be mature mule deer in the 160″+ class. We have taken many deer in the 170-180″ class and some over 200″.
Tag Availability: September – Archery Deer are easy to draw, Archery Elk are over-the-counter, Rifle Bear are easy to draw Muzzleloader – Deer tags are easy to draw, Elk tags require 2-4 preference points. 1st season – Elk are easy to draw, Bear tags are over-the-counter 2nd season – Deer are easy to draw, Elk are over-the-counter 3rd season – Deer require 0-1 preference points to draw. Elk are over-the-counter 4th season – Deer require 2-3 points for residents, non-residents should expect to draw with 4-6 points. Bull tags take 0-1 points to draw.

About Horseback Hunting
A horse was one of the most ancient assistants to human hunters, second only to the dog. It helped keep up with the quarry that was much faster than a biped, approach an animal put to bay by dogs before it could get away, or get close enough for a shot. Apart from riding at full gallop, wily hunters would also stalk birds and beasts by walking to them so that the silhouette of a human was covered by the body of the horse. These types of hunting are seldom met with these days, but the use of horses afield is far from over. A great advantage of a horse is that it can go where no wheeled vehicles can. This can be invaluable where you have to cover lots of ground over broken terrain. In countries like Kirghizstan, hunters would ride the sturdy local steeds from one spotting place to the next; as soon as the game is spotted, though, the horses would be left behind under care of one of the guides, and the hunters would stalk the animals on foot. There’s no such thing as a born rider, and if you are considering a horseback hunt you must take a few lessons to learn (or refresh) the skills. When you go to a riding school for the first time, you may be surprised that your lessons begin and end with caring for the horse. It’s not obvious for many city dwellers that a horse is not a machine. It can get tired, hurt, lazy, excited, or frightened, perhaps by your own unexpected movement or shout. If you want your ride to be safe and enjoyable, you need to establish rapport with your horse, and the key to that is care and attention - something that a horse needs just as much as a human. And although caring for horses is one of the responsibilities of the guides, you must at least offer to lend a hand. Read more...
Most hunts listed as “horseback” imply that the hunters use their four-legged assistant to take them deep into the wilderness which you can’t access with the help of motor vehicles. Mules are often used to carry loads, and horses for riding. Horseback hunting offers an additional challenge as well – animals need to be cared after, and stories of city hunters being thrown off their horses do happen occasionally. However, the romance of the old days, and the inimitable feeling of camaraderie not only with humans, but with animals, that horseback hunting implies, more than pays its way. Hide details

About the 'Bob'
Named after an early forester and conservationist, the Bob Marshall Wilderness is over 1.5 million acres of roadless terrain, leaving it as one of the most completely preserved mountain ecosystems in the world. It contains the kind of wilderness most people can only imagine; rugged peaks, alpine lakes, grassy meadows, shimmering streams, and big river valleys.
The Wilderness runs for 60 miles along the Continental Divide, with elevations ranging from 4,000 feet to more than 9,000 feet. A huge escarpment called the Chinese Wall highlights the Bob's vast beauty, with an average height of more than 1,000 feet and a length of 22 miles.
With more than 1,000 miles of a well-developed trail system, the 'Bob' is prime location for horse back and mule-pack trips. It s array of wildlife also allows for trophy fishing and hunting trips, all of which are available through Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters!
Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters is owned and operated by Trent Osburn. Trent is a native to Montana and has ample experience in the backcountry. Growing up hunting with his dad and brothers, and outfitting prior to buying Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters, Trent has the expertise and knowledge to guide you through the trip of a lifetime in the most unforgettable way possible.

History of Khabarovsk Krai
In the Middle Ages, the territory of today’s Khabarovsk Krai was inhabited mainly by the peoples of the Tungus-Manchu language group, as well as Nivkhs. In China they were known collectively as “wild Jurchen”. In the 13th-14th centuries, the Mongol rulers of China repeatedly organized expeditions to the lower Amur.
Russians began the development of the Far East in the 17th century. In 1639, a Cossack troop headed by Ivan Moskvitin reached the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. The first stockade town was built in the mouth of the Ulya River. Later, Vasily Danilovich Poyarkov and Yerofei Pavlovich Khabarov were the first who started joining the Amur lands to Russia. Before Russians came here, the tribes of Daurs, Evenks, Natks, Gilyaks and others lived in this area (only about 30 thousand people).
The area was quickly populated by Russian settlers; new stockade towns were founded. But the process was interrupted due to a conflict with the Qing Dynasty. From the 1680s, Manchus started to fight against the Russian state.
More Historical Facts…
Russia could not move significant military forces to the Amur region and had to sign the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689). According to it, Russians had to leave the left bank of the Amur River but managed to uphold its rights for the area behind Lake Baikal and the Sea of Okhotsk coast.
In the 18th century, Okhotsk became the main Pacific port of the Russian Empire. Development of the northern coast of the Pacific, exploration of the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin prepared the basis for the return of the Amur region.
In 1847, Nikolai Nikolayevich Muravyov was appointed a governor-general of Eastern Siberia. He did his best to return the Amur area to the Russian Empire. The number of Russians in the region began to grow. In 1858, the town of Khabarovsk was founded.
As a result of the weakening of China during the Opium Wars, two agreements were signed - the Aigun Treaty in 1858 and the Beijing Treaty in 1860. The Russian-Chinese border was established on the Amur and Ussuri rivers.
In 1884, Zabaikalskaya, Amurskaya and Primorskaya regions were united into Priamurskoye region with the center in Khabarovsk. Until the late 19th century, the Amur area was settled slowly. The situation changed in the early 20th century. In 1900, the Trans-Baikal Railway was opened, in 1902 - the Chinese Eastern Railway.
As a result, the number of settlers grew rapidly. In 1900-1913, about 300,000 peasants from other regions of the Russian Empire came to the Amur area. There were three towns (Khabarovsk, Nikolayevsk-on-Amur and Okhotsk) on the territory, which makes Khabarovsk krai today. By 1915, there were more than six thousand settlements with a total population of 316,300 people in Primorskaya oblast.
The Civil War lead to a great number of deaths and economic collapse in Russia. The restoration of pre-war level of economy was achieved by 1926. New cities were built in the region - Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Birobidzhan. October 20, 1938, Dalnevostochny region was divided into Khabarovsky and Primorsky regions.
In 1947-1948, Sakhalin and Amur regions were separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1953, Magadan region was formed and separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1956, Kamchatka region became independent too. In 1991, the Jewish autonomous region was separated from Dalnevostochny region.
