Tips for Choosing the Perfect Fishing Resort

With so many fishing resorts to choose from in the Florida Keys, finding the perfect one for your needs can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision:

Location and Proximity to Fishing Spots

Consider the resort’s location and its proximity to popular fishing spots. Choosing a resort that is conveniently located near your desired fishing grounds will save you time and ensure that you have ample opportunities to pursue your favorite fishing techniques.

Reputation and Reviews

Research the reputation of the fishing resort by reading reviews and feedback from previous guests. Pay attention to comments about customer service, cleanliness, and the overall fishing experience. This information can give you insights into what to expect and whether the resort is a good fit for you.

Accommodation Options and Pricing

Explore the accommodation options offered by the fishing resort and consider your preferences and budget. Whether you prefer a private villa, a beachfront bungalow, or a standard hotel room, ensure that the resort offers accommodations that suit your needs. Compare pricing and amenities to find the best value for your money.

Amenities and Services

Take note of the amenities and services offered by the fishing resort and consider which ones are important to you. Whether you prioritize marina facilities, on-site restaurants, or recreational activities, make sure that the resort can meet your specific requirements.

Fishing Packages and Specials

Check if the fishing resort offers any special packages or deals that can help you save money or enhance your fishing experience. Some resorts may offer discounted rates for extended stays, inclusive fishing packages, or additional perks for anglers.

Accessibility and Transportation Options

Consider the accessibility of the fishing resort and the transportation options available. Check if the resort offers shuttle services or if there are car rental options nearby. Additionally, consider whether the resort has ample parking if you plan to bring your own vehicle.

Safety and Security Measures

Ensure that the fishing resort has appropriate safety and security measures in place. Look for resorts that have lifeguards on duty, security personnel, and emergency protocols to ensure your safety during your stay.

Customer Support and Assistance

Evaluate the level of customer support and assistance offered by the fishing resort. Friendly and responsive staff can make a significant difference in your overall experience, from helping you plan your fishing itinerary to addressing any concerns or requests during your stay.

Eco-Friendly Practices

If environmental sustainability is important to you, look for fishing resorts that prioritize eco-friendly practices. Resorts that are committed to preserving the Florida Keys’ natural beauty and marine life will appeal to those who value responsible tourism.

Additional Activities and Attractions Nearby

Consider the availability of other activities and attractions near the fishing resort. While fishing may be your main focus, having the option to explore other attractions such as snorkeling, diving, or visiting historical sites can add depth to your vacation experience.

Fishing Techniques and Species in the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys is known for its diverse fishing techniques and abundant fish species. Whether you prefer offshore fishing, inshore fishing, flats fishing, or fly fishing, the Florida Keys offers opportunities for anglers of all skill levels.

Offshore Fishing

Offshore fishing in the Florida Keys involves venturing into deeper waters in search of larger game fish such as marlin, sailfish, and tuna. This technique typically requires a boat and an experienced captain who can navigate the open ocean in pursuit of your target species.

Inshore Fishing

Inshore fishing in the Florida Keys takes place in shallower waters such as bays, channels, and nearshore reefs. This technique is ideal for targeting species like snook, redfish, and trout. Inshore fishing can be done from a boat or even from the shoreline, making it accessible for anglers with different preferences.

Flats Fishing

Flats fishing is a popular technique in the Florida Keys, especially in the shallow, grassy areas known as flats. This technique involves poling or wading through the flats while searching for bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Flats fishing requires stealth and accuracy in casting, making it a thrilling experience for anglers.

Backcountry Fishing

Backcountry fishing in the Florida Keys takes place in the expansive mangrove forests and estuaries. This technique offers opportunities to catch species like snook, redfish, and tarpon while enjoying the unique coastal scenery and wildlife.

Fly fishing enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities in the Florida Keys. Whether it’s targeting bonefish, tarpon, or permit, the flats and backcountry areas offer ideal conditions for this captivating and challenging fishing technique.

Deep-Sea Fishing

Deep-sea fishing in the Florida Keys is an adrenaline-pumping experience that involves venturing far offshore in search of trophy fish like marlin, sailfish, and tuna. This technique requires a sturdy boat, experienced crew, and specialized equipment to handle the powerful game fish found in the deep waters.

Reef and Wreck Fishing

Reef and wreck fishing in the Florida Keys is a combination of inshore and offshore fishing. It involves targeting fish species that inhabit the artificial reefs, wrecks, and structures found along the coastline. This technique can yield a variety of species, including grouper, snapper, and cobia.

Targeted Species: Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit

The Florida Keys is famous for its targeted species, namely bonefish, tarpon, and permit. These fish are highly prized for their challenging nature, strength, and agility. Anglers travel from all over the world to test their skills against these iconic game fish.

Other Popular Fish Species

In addition to the targeted species, the Florida Keys offers abundant fishing opportunities for various other fish species. These include snapper, grouper, mahi-mahi, kingfish, barracuda, and many more. From inshore to offshore fishing, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from when exploring the vibrant waters of the Florida Keys.

Peak Fishing Seasons in the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys offers excellent fishing opportunities year-round, but different seasons can yield different results based on the behavior and migration patterns of fish species. Here’s a breakdown of the peak fishing seasons in the Florida Keys:

Winter Season (December to February)

During the winter season, the Florida Keys experience lower water temperatures, which can affect the fishing conditions. However, this season is still known for fantastic sailfish action, as well as other species like kingfish, tuna, and wahoo. Winter also offers excellent opportunities for inshore fishing, with species like redfish, trout, and sheepshead being more active in the cooler waters.

Spring Season (March to May)

Spring is a popular season for fishing in the Florida Keys, as the water temperatures start to rise, and the fish become more active. This season offers excellent offshore fishing opportunities, with species like sailfish, mahi-mahi, and blackfin tuna moving closer to the Keys. Inshore fishing also sees an increase in activity, with tarpon and bonefish becoming more prevalent.

Summer Season (June to August)

Summer in the Florida Keys is known for its vibrant fishing scene, with a wide range of species available to target. Offshore fishing is at its peak, with abundant opportunities to catch sailfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, and wahoo. Inshore fishing continues to thrive, with tarpon, snook, and bonefish providing exciting and memorable experiences for anglers.

Fall Season (September to November)

Fall is a transitional season in the Florida Keys, with changing water temperatures and the arrival of migratory fish. September is known for its exceptional bonefish and permit fishing, as well as the possible arrival of early cold fronts that can bring in pelagic species like sailfish and kingfish. As the season progresses, more species such as mahi-mahi, wahoo, and blackfin tuna can be targeted offshore.

Fishing Licenses and Regulations in the Florida Keys

When fishing in the Florida Keys, it is important to understand and adhere to the fishing licenses and regulations set by the state. These regulations are in place to protect fish populations, maintain the ecosystem, and ensure sustainable fishing practices. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Fishing License Requirements

Anyone over the age of 16 who is fishing in Florida’s saltwater areas, including the Florida Keys, is required to have a valid saltwater fishing license. Licenses can be obtained online or from authorized license agents. It is important to have your fishing license with you while fishing and to present it to law enforcement officers upon request.

Size and Bag Limits

Size and bag limits refer to the minimum and maximum size of a fish species that can be legally caught and the number of fish that an angler can possess or keep. These limits vary depending on the species and may change periodically, so it is essential to stay updated on the latest regulations. By following size and bag limits, anglers contribute to the conservation of fish populations and ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem.

Protected Species and Catch-and-Release Regulations

In the Florida Keys, certain fish species are protected, meaning they cannot be harvested or are subject to strict regulations. Protected species include bonefish, tarpon, and permit. These iconic game fish are highly valued for their sport fishing qualities and contribute significantly to the local economy. Catch-and-release practices are encouraged for these species, allowing future generations of anglers to enjoy the thrill of catching these magnificent fish.

Spearfishing Regulations

If you plan to engage in spearfishing in the Florida Keys, there are additional regulations to be aware of. Spearfishing is only allowed while snorkeling or diving, and it is prohibited within designated no-take areas and near artificial reefs. Certain species may also have specific size and bag limits for spearfishing. Make sure to familiarize yourself with these regulations before engaging in spearfishing activities.

Lobstering Regulations

Lobstering in the Florida Keys is a popular activity, especially during the lobster mini-season and regular season. However, there are strict regulations in place to protect lobster populations and ensure sustainable harvesting practices. These regulations include size limits, bag limits, and specific rules regarding lobstering gear and methods. It is important to obtain the necessary lobstering permits and to comply with all applicable regulations when participating in this activity.

Other Activities and Attractions in the Florida Keys

While fishing may be the main attraction in the Florida Keys, there are plenty of other activities and attractions to explore during your visit. Here are some options to consider:

Snorkeling and Diving

The Florida Keys are home to the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, making them a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Explore vibrant coral formations, encounter colorful marine life, and immerse yourself in the breathtaking underwater world of the Florida Keys.

Water Sports and Boating

From kayaking and paddleboarding to jet skiing and parasailing, there are numerous water sports options to enjoy in the Florida Keys. Rent a kayak or a boat and explore the mangrove forests, or try your hand at windsurfing or kiteboarding for an adrenaline rush on the water.

Wildlife Viewing and Nature Trails

The Florida Keys are rich in diverse wildlife, both on land and in the water. Take a stroll along nature trails, visit wildlife refuges, or participate in eco-tours to observe native species such as alligators, manatees, dolphins, and a variety of bird species in their natural habitats.

Historical Sites and Museums

Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of the Florida Keys by visiting historical sites and museums. Explore the history of shipwrecks at the Shipwreck Museum, marvel at the architectural beauty of the Hemingway House, or discover the intriguing stories of early settlers at the History of Diving Museum.

Shopping and Dining

How to Plan a Fishing Trip to the Florida Keys

Planning a fishing trip to the Florida Keys requires careful consideration and preparation to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience. Here are some steps to follow when planning your trip:

Choosing the Right Time to Visit

Consider the peak fishing seasons in the Florida Keys and choose a time that aligns with your preferred fishing techniques and target species. Research the weather patterns during your desired time of visit and consider factors such as temperature, humidity, and the likelihood of storms to optimize your fishing experience.

Researching and Selecting a Fishing Resort

Explore the different fishing resorts in the Florida Keys and consider their amenities, proximity to fishing spots, and reviews from previous guests. Assess your preferences, budget, and the services each resort offers to find the perfect fit for your fishing trip.

Booking Flights and Transportation

Book your flights to the Florida Keys well in advance to secure the best deals and availability. Consider the location of your fishing resort and plan your transportation accordingly. Whether you choose to rent a car or utilize shuttle services, ensure that you have a reliable means of getting to and from your fishing resort and other attractions.

Packing Essentials

Make a checklist of essential items to pack for your fishing trip. This includes fishing gear, appropriate clothing for different weather conditions, sunscreen, insect repellent, a valid fishing license, and any medications or personal items you may need. Don’t forget to pack any specialized fishing equipment or tackle specific to your fishing techniques and target species.

Creating a Fishing Itinerary

Research the fishing spots, charters, and guides available in the Florida Keys and plan your fishing itinerary accordingly. Consider factors such as tides, weather conditions, and the species you wish to target when scheduling your fishing trips. It is also worth considering alternative activities and attractions to balance your time between fishing and leisure activities.

Preparing Fishing Equipment

Check your fishing equipment well in advance to ensure it is in good working condition. Clean and organize your fishing rods, reels, lines, hooks, and lures, and replace any worn-out or damaged items. Familiarize yourself with local fishing regulations and ensure that your equipment complies with size and bag limits.

Hiring Fishing Guides or Charters

If you’re new to the Florida Keys or want the expertise and guidance of a local angler, consider hiring a fishing guide or charter. Research reputable guides or charters, read reviews, and communicate your fishing preferences and goals. This will help match you with a guide or charter that suits your needs and maximizes your chances of a successful fishing experience.

Following Fishing Regulations

Ensure that you are familiar with and abide by all fishing regulations in the Florida Keys. This includes size and bag limits, protected species regulations, spearfishing regulations, and lobstering regulations. Respect the local ecosystem and contribute to the conservation efforts by practicing catch-and-release whenever appropriate.

Making the Most of Non-Fishing Activities

While fishing may be the primary activity during your trip, take advantage of the diverse attractions and activities available in the Florida Keys. Explore the natural beauty, indulge in water sports, visit historical sites, or simply relax and enjoy the local cuisine. Embrace the opportunity to create a well-rounded and memorable vacation experience.

Capturing and Sharing Memorable Moments

Don’t forget to capture the highlights of your fishing trip by taking photos and videos. Share your experiences with friends and family, and cherish the memories for years to come. Whether it’s a stunning sunrise over the water, a memorable catch, or a special moment spent with loved ones, these memories will serve as a reminder of your incredible fishing adventure in the Florida Keys.

By following these steps and taking the time to plan and prepare, you can ensure a memorable and successful fishing trip to the Florida Keys. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a novice seeking a new adventure, the Florida Keys offers a fishing experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Cast your line, explore the diverse fishing grounds, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this unique destination. Happy fishing!

Ahh, the Florida Keys…

There’s nothing like cruising down to the keys and getting that first glimpse of tropical blue water.

florida keys fishing trip

You’ve got lobster mini-season, lobster season, bonefish, permit, tarpon, and the Everglades, not to mention the world-class offshore fishing down there.

The only thing is, tons of other people are thinking the same thing as you!

A question that we often get is, “My family and I are going down to the keys…how do I get on some fish? Should I bring my boat? Who are the best guides down there?”

It can be crowded and there are tons of ways your trip could go not as planned.

So, we brought back the crowd-favorite Capt. Mark “Hollywood” Johnson from FloridaKeysFunFishing.com to talk to us about making the most of our Florida Keys fishing time.

He goes season by season and outlines what to fish for, what to use, and where to go.

Of course, we cover fishing, but we also cover the logistics like:

  • Where to keep your boat
  • Where to get the best sandwiches
  • Who the best guides are
  • The best times of year to go (if you want to avoid crowds and traffic)
  • And unexpected surprises to look out for (like the yearly shrimp shortage).

If you’re taking a trip down to the Keys, you definitely want to listen to this first.

Great time. Captain and Mate helped and guided us the whole trip. So fun and caught a lot of fish.

~ Charlotte W.

We really enjoyed the time out on the water with Captain Brad, Kimberly and Ryan. Went about 4 or 5 miles from the shore and spent a four hours fishing at two locations. We all caught a total of 52 fish and they cleaned them and bagged them for us. The crew does everything for you except catch the fish.  Since we had such a great time, my wife and I have decided to go every time we visit the ocean.

Thank you for a great experience.

The Florida Keys Are Sportfishing Paradise

  • By Doug Olander

blackfin tuna in florida keys

Stretching for more than 120 miles southwest from just below Miami is a string of 800 islands known as the Florida Keys, a coral archipelago that’s the only living-coral barrier reef in the United States. Certainly, for fishermen in the U.S., there’s no other place like the Keys in terms of its diversity of habitats and game fish, and a long- and well-established infrastructure to make anglers’ dreams come true.

As one drives south, you’ll see names familiar to serious anglers: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Sugarloaf and the Lower Keys, and finally at road’s end, Key West itself. Key West is also the jumping-off point for the Dry Tortugas and the Marquesas Islands.

The Keys has something for just about every angler’s preference — seemingly unending clear flats, the productive waters of vast Florida Bay and adjacent Everglades , miles and miles of fish-attracting bridges, the lush coral reef itself and, just beyond, the promise of blue waters that kiss the western edge of the Gulf Stream.

florida keys barracuda

The list of game fish that anglers hook in the Keys is far too extensive to include here. You can figure that any species inhabiting tropical and warm-temperate waters will be found in the Keys. High on the list of many enthusiasts are the “big three” of the flats.

  • That means tarpon — of 14 IGFA tippet-class world records for tarpon around the globe, 10 were set in the Keys/Florida Bay.
  • That means permit — of 18 line-class world records for permit, 12 came from the Keys, and of 13 tippet-class fly-rod records, 12 were caught in the Keys.
  • These waters similarly dominate for bonefish records. An iconic sight here is the guide standing on a poling platform, pushing a skiff with a long fiberglass pole, as an angler stands ready at the bow.

Of course, the Keys is much more than flats fishing, with opportunities to troll, fish live baits on the drift or from kites just off the reef. There, you can expect sailfish, mahi, wahoo, blackfin tuna and more. And speaking of blackfin , at least half the IGFA world records for line and tippet classes are from the Florida Keys.

Planning a Trip

When to Go: For the Keys, truly anytime you can go is a good time when it comes to fishing. Sure, some seasons/times are better for some species than others, but you’ll find great opportunities every month of the year.

That said, in planning a trip, you might want to consider weather and the numbers of fellow visitors likely to be on hand. Drier and breezier weather is the norm during the primary tourist season, during winter and spring, when the Keys are busy with visitors, at best, and overrun, at worst. Things will take longer and cost more. But of course, it will be warm — particularly when compared with winter up north.

On the other hand, waiting until summer and early fall when crowds have dispersed promises lower prices and a more relaxed ambience. With weather, on the plus side, it’s generally and often delightfully flat calm. However, expect things to really heat up by afternoon, when anglers also frequently must dodge squalls that build up. Then there’s the 800-pound gorilla that might show up anytime June through October: hurricanes.

grouper caught in the Florida keys

Where to Go and How to Get There: Miami International is the closest major airport; if you can avoid horrendous traffic, you can be in the Keys in a rental car in less than two hours. Alternatively, fly directly into Key West’s international airport. Of course, many folks enjoy the unique drive over 42 bridges on U.S. 1, the Overseas Highway — as long as they’re not in a rush (especially on weekends in high season). Figure three hours or so from the northern end of the route to Key West. As far as hotels, resorts and — for those trailering boats — marinas, there are too many to count. If planning to visit in winter or spring, book many months ahead; much less lead time is required in summer.

What to Expect: If fishing on guided trips, tackle isn’t required. Generally Keys guides have plenty of gear — the right gear and usually good quality. That said, anglers who want to bring their favorite outfits should find plenty of use. As noted, whether you prefer fishing flats, backcountry, reefs or blue water, you can fulfill your desires any time of year . Ditto fishing day or night. Night fishing around bridges is a productive bet for snook and tarpon.

mutton snapper Florida Keys

Besides fishing, the main attraction in the Keys would be diving. For some that means spearfishing; for others, it’s observation; and in season, in a big way, it’s “bugs” — gathering lobsters. The Keys also offers lots of fests and festivals, particularly the Bohemian, irreverent Key West with its annual Hemingway Days and Fantasy Fest.

As with many coral reefs globally, the Keys’ coral has had issues in some areas. Accordingly, a number of agencies are involved in reef protection and restoration, such as the Coral Restoration Foundation and Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota which has received a $7 million grant from NOAA for Florida reef restoration.

Go RVing Along the Florida Keys Scenic Highway

Go on an RV trip along the Florida Keys Scenic Highway!

Jeff Crider

People often drive their RVs to incredible beaches. But imagine taking an RV trip to a tropical island paradise.  It’s possible in the Florida Keys.

The Florida Keys Scenic Highway stretches 110 miles off the south coast of Florida, making it possible to visit 43 alluring islands in the Florida Keys, from Key Largo to Key West, the southernmost point in the continental United States, just 90 miles across the water from Cuba. While the tropical scenery is spectacular, the Keys also offer plenty of outdoor activities.

The island of Islamorada, just south of Key Largo, is considered by many to be the "Sportfishing Capital of the World," with its multiple marinas and charter boat companies that offer deep-sea fishing, reef fishing, and backcountry fishing trips. Visitors can also charter a boat and head out to the open waters of the Atlantic to catch sailfish, marlin, tuna, mahi and wahoo. The keys are also home to 11 state parks . These include:

  • Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park in Key West : A focal point of this park is its historic fort, which contains the largest collection of Civil War armaments in the U.S.
  • John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo : This is the nation’s first undersea park. Attractions include coral reefs that can be seen by scuba diving, snorkeling and taking a glass-bottom boat tour. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular activities along with walking on short trails, picnicking and swimming at the beach. The Visitor Center has a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium and nature videos are shown in its theater.
  • Long Key State Park : This park offers opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, birding, flats fishing, and picnicking. Visitors can bring their own kayaks or rent one from the ranger station to paddle along the shoreline and see a variety of wildlife hiding in the mangroves or in the clear shallow waters.

Aerial views of water

Looking for a bit of history? The Keys will surprise you. Historical attractions include:

  • Ernest Hemingway's Home & Museum in Key West : Hemingway lived in the two-story, Spanish-style house for eight years in the 1930s. Visitors can see the office behind the house where Hemingway spent many hours writing. The grounds are frequented by descendants of “Snowball,” Hemingway’s six-toed cat.
  • Harry S. Truman's Little White House : Originally built in 1890 as housing for Naval officers, the house has provided extended stays for inventor Thomas Edison and scientist Edward Hayden in addition to being used at various times by six American presidents, including Harry S. Truman , who spent 175 days of his presidency from 1946 through 1952. Other presidents that have stayed at this home include William Howard Taft in 1912, Dwight Eisenhower in 1955-56, John F. Kennedy in 1961 and 1962 and former Presidents Jimmy Carter in 1996 and 2007 and Bill Clinton in 2005. “All have found it a restful place to restore body and mind as later presidents have used Camp David,” Truman’s Little White House writes on its website , adding that the home was also used as the site of international peace talks between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2001.
  • San Pedro Underwater Archaeological Preserve State Park near Islamorada : This underwater park offers snorkelers and divers opportunities to see the remnants of a Spanish treasure ship that sank in a hurricane in 1722. It’s located in 18 feet of water. But because it is 1.2 miles from Islamorada, one needs a boat to get there. All that is left of the original ship are ballast stones. Replica cannons and a plaque have been added to the site.

Visitors to the Keys will also find no shortage of great places for Cuban food and pastries in the Keys, including Pinecrest Bakery in Key Largo . Excellent seafood restaurants are also located throughout the Keys, including Capt. Craig's in Islamorada and the Hogfish Bar & Grill on Stock Island .

P opular bar restaurants include the original Margaritaville in Key West and the Hogs Breath Saloon , also in Key West.  The Keys also features numerous campgrounds and RV resorts, including many with ocean views. These include:

  • Big Pine Key Resort in Big Pine Key : This 10-acre resort features waterfront RV sites as well as rustic campsites and Airstream and luxury travel trailer rentals.
  • Boyd's Key West Campground : Boyd’s has 200 RV sites and 50 tent sites. Through a partnership with Key West RV Rentals , they’ll set up a travel trailer on site and have it ready and waiting when guests arrive. “We have guests that fly down and rent an RV,” park co-owner Shaun Hamilton said, adding that the drive south of Miami to Key West is a once in a lifetime adventure that includes passing Everglades National Park . Many of Boyd’s guests also enjoy snorkeling at Dry Tortugas Island. “The water quality there is incredible,” Hamilton said. Onsite amenities at Boyd’s include a swimming pool and a food truck that provides breakfast and lunch. The food truck vendor, De Luna’s Cafe, specializes in delicious Cuban cuisine, which is highly sought after, Hamilton said.
  • Fiesta Key RV Resort and Marina in Long Key : This 28-acre Thousand Trails resort sits on its own private island. Amenities include a swimming pool and spa, an on-site restaurant and a bar on the beach. Popular nearby attractions include Long Key State Park, the Dolphin Research Center, and Bun n’ Mary’s Dive Center.
  • Grassy Key RV Park and Resort in Marathon : This park offers waterfront, premium and standard RV sites with water, sewer, electrical, and cable hookups with a free WiFi hotspot at the clubhouse. When boating in the Florida Keys, it’s essential to be aware of the local regulations to keep both you and the marine environment safe.

  • Boaters born after January 1, 1988, must complete a boating safety course and obtain a Boating Safety Education Identification Card.
  • You do not need a Florida boating license if you have a valid out-of-state certification.
  • Speed Limits
  • Obey posted speed limits in idle speed zones, especially in manatee protection areas.
  • Key areas like John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park enforce strict no-wake zones.
  • Be mindful of where you drop anchor. Coral reefs are protected, and damaging them is illegal. Use mooring buoys where available.
  • Anchoring is prohibited in sea grass beds, so be sure to drop anchor in sandy areas.
  • Marine Conservation
  • The Florida Keys are part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Boaters are required to follow strict guidelines to protect coral reefs and marine life.
  • Fishing regulations are enforced to protect overfished species. Be sure to check local regulations on catch limits and size restrictions.
  • Navigation Rules
  • Always give way to larger vessels and keep an eye out for markers and buoys that indicate safe channels.
  • The area around the Keys is a mix of shallow water and deep channels, so maintaining proper navigation is crucial.

Essential Gear for Boating in the Keys

  • GPS/Navigation Systems : The waters around the Keys can be tricky to navigate, especially near shallow reefs and mangroves.
  • Snorkeling/Diving Gear : The Florida Keys are home to some of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the U.S., so don’t forget your mask, fins, and snorkel.
  • Fishing Gear : If you’re heading out for a fishing trip, be sure to pack your rods, reels, bait, and tackle boxes.
  • Safety Equipment : U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, a VHF radio, a first aid kit, and flares are required by law.

Best Time to Boat in the Florida Keys

  • Winter (December to February) : Mild temperatures (60-70°F), minimal rain, and calm waters make winter a prime time for boating.
  • Spring (March to May) : Increasing temperatures and lower crowds. Great for fishing and diving.
  • Summer (June to August) : Hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Popular for tourists, but it’s also hurricane season, so be cautious.
  • Fall (September to November) : A quieter time for boaters, but still within hurricane season. Boaters can find lower prices on rentals and accommodations during this time.

Boating in the Florida Keys offers an incredible experience, with access to some of the most beautiful and diverse marine environments in the world.
