Fleetway Travel goes into administration

Tour operator Fleetway Travel has gone into administration after more than 40 years in business.

Fleetway Travel ceased trading this afternoon, just days after UK outbound travel resumed, with 6,500 Atol-protected bookings and a smaller number of accommodation-only bookings to be refunded by Abta.

The company had offices in London and Sheffield and employed 85 staff, who were informed of the administration via Zoom.

The CAA said no travellers were abroad at the time.

In a statement, the CAA said consumers with cancelled bookings would be able to submit a claim under Atol.

It advised those due to travel to check with their airline and said, consumers who choose to travel “may be asked to pay again for replacement services” including accommodation, transfers or other services.

But they would be entitled to claim for a refund, the CAA said, as would those choosing not to travel or whose flight tickets are not valid.

Fleetway chief executive Stuart Jackson was formerly a senior executive at Monarch Group where he ran tour operator Cosmos Holidays before joining Fleetway in 2016.

The tour operator had been trading since the late 1970s but was acquired by private equity groups Synova Capital and Tenzing Private Equity in 2015 and moved chiefly online following the acquisition.

It merged with New York-based DH Enterprise & Associates, operating as Great Value Vacations, in February this year to form the TravelSmart International Group under the chairmanship of Ian Coghlan, former Fleetway chairman.

The company sold luxury holidays worldwide, including a significant US business.

It carried 68,000 passengers and recorded a transaction turnover of £38 million in 2018, the last full year for which it filed results.

Fleetway’s annual revenue was about £10 million.

As well as Fleetway Travel, it traded under names including Exclusive Luxury Breaks, Explorer’s Collection, Late Bargains, Luxury Holiday Collection, Phone & Fly, Sail Away, Silversurfers Holidays and Travelsmart.

CAA head of Atol Andy Cohen said: “We understand this will be concerning news for anyone who has booked to travel with the company or has had their booking cancelled.

“It is a sad day for the industry when a long-established business like Fleetway ceases trading.

“However, the Atol scheme exists for exactly this kind of situation and we are making arrangements so all Atol-protected customers may make a claim.”

PwC has been appointed administrator.

Which? Travel editor Rory Boland said: “Seeing yet another travel firm fail during the pandemic is a deeply worrying sign for the industry, particularly as the government simply watches on instead of providing support to companies who need help.

“The collapse of Fleetway Travel will be disappointing for thousands of customers who have been looking forward to a long-awaited holiday. They now face having to pay twice to go away this summer, as they could face a long wait for a refund.”

The tour operator has gone into administration after 45 years in business - days after UK travel abroad resumed.

Andy Cohen, head of Atol, said: “We understand this will be concerning news for anyone who has booked to travel with the company or has had their booking cancelled. It is a sad day for the industry when a long-established business like Fleetway ceases trading.

“However, the Atol scheme exists for exactly this kind of situation and we are making arrangements so all Atol protected customers may make a claim.”

Stuart Jackson, chief executive of Fleetway, said: “It is with immense sadness that, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to overcome the tremendous hurdles placed in front of us.

"We have worked tirelessly to find solutions to save the company and jobs for our loyal employees that have served our 60,000 customers annually.

"However, it is immensely disappointing that the required funding or investment could not be secured to get us through this unprecedented crisis and save Fleetway Travel.”

Fleetway Travel's announcement comes just a week after Funway Holidays said it would close on 30 September due to the "severe" impact of coronavirus pandemic.

The company has said all holidays departing on or after September 1st are now cancelled.

No new bookings or re-bookings will be accepted.

In a statement, the firm said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our wonderful agent partners.

“While the Funway journey is coming to a close, we hope all of our partners emerge from this crisis and enjoy a most prosperous future.”

Customers have been reassured that all Refund Credit Notes will be paid in cash.

And all deposits or payments received on live bookings will be refunded in full.

Fleetway Travel goes bust with thousands seeking refunds

The coronavirus crisis has claimed its latest travel victim: Fleetway Travel, a holiday company that had been trading since 1975, along with its affiliate, Fleetway Aviation.

The administrators, PwC, said: “Fleetway has operated for 45 years and specialises in package holidays. It has operations in London and Sheffield, and employs around 62 staff.

“The companies have experienced cash flow pressures due to the impact of Covid-19. As a result of the worldwide travel bans, Fleetway has seen an almost complete cessation in new bookings and suffered cancellations across all destinations.

“Funding options for the business have been pursued by management but could not be concluded. This has unfortunately resulted in the companies being placed into administration.”

The closure since March of the American market, with a presidential ban on travellers from the UK, has hit Fleetway particularly badly.

Ryanair set for court battle with CAA over strikes

At the time of its failure the firm had around 6,500 forward bookings. Some of them may still be able to go ahead, given that airlines have been paid for their tickets, but holidaymakers may be asked to pay again for “replacement services of the original package holiday” – typically transfers and accommodation.

They will be able to claim for these elements from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which administers the Atol financial protection scheme.

The CAA said no holidaymakers are currently abroad on Atol-protected bookings with Fleetway.

Thousands more travellers are seeking refunds from Fleetway for holidays that had been cancelled during the coronavirus pandemic.

The company had recommended customers contact their travel insurer, rebook their trip or accept a “refund credit note” entitling them to rebook a holiday at a future date or receive a cash refund at a later date.

The Atol administrator said customers will be able to claim refunds for protected bookings.

Andy Cohen, head of Atol at the CAA, said: “We understand this will be concerning news for anyone who has booked to travel with the company or has had their booking cancelled.

“It is a sad day for the industry when a long-established business like Fleetway ceases trading.

How coronavirus lockdowns changed the world's most polluted cities

“However, the Atol scheme exists for exactly this kind of situation and we are making arrangements so all Atol-protected customers may make a claim.”

Fleetway’s website has not yet been updated to reflect the closure. It says: “Our mission is to open up the world to every person – to allow you to discover the world for less.”

Every travel company has been badly hit by the almost total shutdown of tourism, and the subsequent introduction of blanket quarantine by the UK government.

The standard Package Travel Regulations, which required refunds for package holidays to be paid within two week, have gone by the board – with customers told to wait months for refunds.

Fleetway failure came after online operator was turned down for COVID-19 loan

Fleetway failure came after online operator was turned down for COVID-19 loan

Operator sought funding through Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme

Fleetway Travel was refused a loan through the government’s Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) before  entering administration  on July 13.

Tour operator Fleetway– which sold luxury breaks through deals sites TravelZoo, Voyage Prive and Secret Escapes – failed to secure funding from shareholders after being turned down for the CBILS loan.

The company was owned by London-based private equity (PE) firms Synova Capital and Tenzing PE, together with US-based travel group DH Enterprises which  merged with Fleetway  in February this year.

A source suggested private equity involvement cut the chances of securing a CBILS loan, noting: “Only 30% of CBILS applications from PE-backed businesses have been successful.”

Synova and Tenzing backed  a management buy-out of Fleetway  in 2015 and recruited former Monarch and Cosmos Holidays head Stuart Jackson as the tour operator’s chief executive in 2016.

Jackson told Travolution sister title Travel Weekly: “We were unsuccessful in our CBILS application and our options started to narrow.

“We required a loan from the shareholders which was not forthcoming. We had a number of shareholders – private and PE investors, and DH Enterprises was involved. Everyone tried to find a way to support the business. No one wanted it to come to this.

“We had cash for a longer period of time, but there was a point where we would hinder the creditors’ position. We had to decide.”

The CBILS scheme offers financial support to businesses with up to £45 million in annual turnover, giving access to bank loans of up to £5 million. The government guarantees 80% of the money from more than 50 lenders and pays the interest and fees for the first 12 months.

To qualify, a business must be based in the UK and demonstrate it has been adversely impacted by covid-19, would be viable if not for the pandemic and can afford to repay the loan.

Barclays head of hospitality and leisure Mike Saul warned this week: “If a business could not afford it [a loan] at the end of last year, it probably could not afford a lot of leverage now.”

Fleetway Travel had been trading for 45 years. It ceased operating with 6,500 Atol-protected bookings and a small number of accommodation-only bookings which will be refunded by Abta.

The company had offices in London and Sheffield and employed 60 staff, plus a group of self-employed homeworkers who worked seasonally.

As well as Fleetway, the company traded as Exclusive Luxury Breaks, Explorer’s Collection, Late Bargains, Luxury Holiday Collection, Phone & Fly, Sail Away, Silversurfers Holidays and Travelsmart.

DH Enterprises is the parent company of Great Value Vacations which, together with Fleetway Travel, formed the TravelSmart International Group in February.

PwC is handling the administration.

Disappointed that CAA have still not…

Disappointed that CAA have still not refunded me for the two holidays I’ve lost out on due to Fleetway going into administration. It’s 3 months since I made the claim... they just revert back for more and more paperwork. Spoke on the phone to an agent and from what I gather they are delaying refunds to those whom booked via Secret Escapes... because Secret Escapes are still trading? Has anyone else had this problem? Apparently approval has not yet been granted to refund.

Another Fleeceway victim!

We are so so disappointed with this company. Our holiday cancelled. Fleetway refusing to refund or even offer a credit note yet one of their big selling points on their website still says they have full financial protection. What a joke! We have lodged a complaint with ABTA but don't hold out much hope. Come on Fleetway, do the right thing for your loyal customers and take responsibility.

Shame on you Fleetway

Not before time. I think we all knew what the outcome would be. I have a chargeback claim in progress and also have small claim court proceedings pending. I do hope everybody receives their rightful refunds. Check out all personnel on companieshouse.gov.uk and when booking your next trip ensure none of these individuals are associated with your tour operator. Good luck. I think I need a holiday 😂

FLEETWAY AN UNRELIABLE TRAVEL AGENT

In October 2019 we booked and paid in full for a holiday for March, 2020. Fleetway cancelled on 5th March, 2020 due to Flybe collapse and promised us a full refund within 14 days. Now on 21st July, we are still waiting. Have made numerous phone calls and emails and lots of failed promises given to us. WARNING!!!! DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY. THIS COMPANY IS STILL BEING ALLOWED TO ADVERTISE HOLIDAYS. THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED!!!!!

Dreadful company

Dreadful company. Cancelled my city break to Budapest (corona). Emailed to say claim on my travel insurance. Wrong! Their terms and conditions say they will refund if they cancel. They can't now be contacted; phone cuts off, and website useless. It's a lesson learned. I'll never use them again - assuming they're still trading!

I have been a regular Fleetway customer…

I have been a regular Fleetway customer for the last few years. Now they show how they treat customers when things get difficult. Had a trip booked to Italy 21st April. Obviously cancelled due to Covid 19 but since then nothing from Fleetway not even an email saying they won’t refund so I can claim elsewhere. Disgraceful. When this crisis is over customers will remember the companies who were honest and transparent

Not the Isabella fan club

Unfortunately we are NOT in the small band of people who recently have been leaving glowing feed back for fleetway and appear to have started a fan club for the allegedly helpful Isabella. Like the vast majority of customers, we have been lied to, ignored and generally treated with contempt. We are still waiting for a refund which was due to be paid 10 weeks ago. Would never book with them again and would advise anybody else to do the same

Date of experience : 03 July 2020

Appalling - if I could have given zero stars I would have!!! 114 days after we requested refund due to cancelled holiday we still haven’t received. Hotel in Portugal had confirmed they’ve refunded money (bulk of amount) but still nothing from this shambolic company. You have to chase & push for any information- nothing forthcoming. So much for ABTA and the legal 14 day refund window. Do not ever use Fleetway!!!

Today we should have been travelling to…

Today we should have been travelling to Tenerife for a weeks luxury holiday to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary, booked via Fleetway Travel. Email received on 26 April to advise holiday was cancelled, which was to be expected in view of the current situation. However after many many e-mails, including one to the CEO, NO response at all. Disgraceful. I even complained to ABTA yesterday. Booked previous holidays with them no problem. Would NOT book again.

Not everyone can afford to wait For Fleetway.

Some contributors have been generous in their attitude towards Fleetway’s behaviour. We, too, have been offered a refund credit note for our cancelled Corfu holiday. We do not want to book another holiday but think it is presumptuous of Fleetway to assume that most people can afford to wait until the end of December 2021 (that’s 20 months away!) in the hope that they will have the money to refund us. If they don’t, we then have the hassle of claiming from ABTA/ATOL. Fortunately we have been able to claim on Mastercard but not everyone will be in the same position.

Administration

So fleetway have now gone into administration, all the lies and deceit over the past 4 months, the company had no future. Stuart Jackson should now be unemployable for the way he has dealt with customers. Make sure when you book a future holiday he is not involved with the company. His previous job was at Monach, and we all Know what happened to them. Good luck to everyone trying to get refunds

Poor customer service & spending money on advertising!

Poor customer service! They continue to give you excuses about getting your entitled money back off the COVID cancelled holidays. It's been over 5 weeks, and i'm not recieving responses nor can i get in contact via phone. It's disgraceful form of comms. Not only that, tbeh're advertising again using our money!

Date of experience : 10 June 2020

2 months and still waiting

I have been reluctant to leave a negative review as I wanted to give Fleetway plenty of time due to home busy they must be. I have been chasing a response now for nearly 2 months. We had to return home from our holiday In Jordan early on the 16/3 due to travel restrictions imposed by the Jordanian government where the airport was being closed. I had an initial reply saying they’d be in touch in 28days. The response promised is now 3 weeks overdue. So disappointed that Fleetway seem to have abandoned their promise.

Date of experience : 13 May 2020

Just had feedback from credit card…

Just had feedback from credit card company, who asked if I’d had a credit note. I said yes, but I’d never accepted a credit note, Fleetway had just emailed one even though I had previously requested a refund. They said if that’s the case I’m unlikely to get a refund as a credit note has been issued. Think Fleetway are trying to use this to dodge there legal responsibilities once again. If your bank asks about a credit note & you’ve not accepted one, just say one has not been issued as I think I’m going to struggle now. Good luck to all, company wise suppose this will sort the wheat from the chaff.

Date of experience : 22 May 2020

Amazing how the stars are calculated…

Amazing how the stars are calculated here as so many thousand of us have complained about Fleetway Travel. Wiggled and squirmed for the last four months to try and keep customers from their money. Run by folk who had no interest in running a sustainable business and no interest in the customer - the Directors should be prosecuted.

Report Fleetway Travel for non refund of monies paid

As with all others who have reported Fleetway Travel for non refund of monies paid for a cancelled holiday I am writing to Competitions and Markets Authority who are dealing with Companies acting unfairly during the Coronavirus period. I suggest you all write to them by visiting their website www.Coronavirus business complaint.service.gov.uk where you will find a form to fill in.

Date of experience : 03 June 2020

They are breaking the law

As all have previously mentioned they have taken money and breaking the law with no refund. They have been reported as I would advise all to-do, as per previous comments here. Interesting there last posted accounts show they have £6.3m cash in the bank with an additional £7.8m held for loss situations....

Date of experience : 06 May 2020

i will never book with Fleetway again

I would strongly recommend not booking with this organisation. If I could have given 0, I would have. Completely understandable that our trip was cancelled due to Covid19 but not issuing a refund is not acceptable. When we called Fleetway they said they could provide a credit note but could not provide a refund. When asked why, no reply was given. I will never book with Fleetway again.

Date of experience : 31 March 2020

Money Saving Expert league tables show…

Money Saving Expert league tables show just how awful Fleetway are. Fleetway are ranked 61 out of 70 in travel firms ranked from best to worst (net score -87) and ranked 64 out of 66 in worst firms for refunds (Only 1% have received a refund). MSE files are being sent to CMA, CAA and Dept of Transport. You would expect them to take action against Fleetway & it’s Directors.

Date of experience : 08 July 2020

0 Stars - A lesson in NOT how to treat your customers

0 Stars. We paid £5400 to Fleetway and understandably due to 19 Covid they cancelled the holiday 2 weeks before we were due to leave. They are refusing to give us a refund or even vouchers. It cannot be legal to refuse a refund when you are the party making the cancellation and a service has not been given. We were frequent customers of Fleetway but will never use again. By fleecing their customer base, they won't have a business left after we return to some form of normality.

Fleetway Travel holiday firm goes bust in blow for 6,500 holidaymakers with booked trips

FLEETWAY Travel holiday firm has gone bust in a blow for 6,500 holidaymakers with booked trips.

The tour operator plunged into administration just days after Brits could travel abroad again following 45 years in business.

Fleetway Travel has gone bust

No travellers are abroad at this time according to the CAA and there are approximately 6,500 affected Atol-protected bookings to be refunded.

Atol is a Civil Aviation Authority scheme to give financial protection to people who purchased package holidays and flights from a member tour operator.

Atol head Andy Cohen said: “We understand this will be concerning news for anyone who has booked to travel with the company or has had their booking cancelled. It is a sad day for the industry when a long-established business like Fleetway ceases trading.

“However, the Atol scheme exists for exactly this kind of situation and we are making arrangements so all Atol protected customers may make a claim.”

The company employed 85 staff across offices in London and Sheffield.

It also traded under the names of Exclusive Luxury Breaks, Explorer’s Collection, Late Bargains, Luxury Holiday Collection, Phone & Fly, Sail Away, Silversurfers Holidays and Travelsmart.

It comes just a week after Funway Holidays said it would close on 30 September due to the "severe" impact of coronavirus pandemic.

All holidays departing on or after September 1st are now cancelled and no new bookings or re-bookings will be accepted.

A firm statement said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our wonderful agent partners.

“While the Funway journey is coming to a close, we hope all of our partners emerge from this crisis and enjoy a most prosperous future.”

All Refund Credit Notes will be paid in cash and all deposits or payments received on live bookings will be refunded in full.

My experience with Fleetway has been…very positive.

My experience with Fleetway has been very positive. From late April when we knew that our holiday was due to be cancelled I have felt fully informed at each stage. Isabella in particular has been very helpful and has now rearranged our holiday for next year within a few days of options being discussed. I would definitely use them again.

My experience with Fleetway.

My experience with Fleetway has been very positive. From late April when we knew that our holiday was due to be cancelled. We were informed of our options and although a voucher didn’t seem desirable, we decided to rearrange for 2021, Isabella has been very helpful and has now rearranged our holiday for next year without any additional costs whatsoever ! I would definitely use Fleetway again.

Very pleased with re-booking process

After reading all the reviews for Fleetway and COVID-19 I was extremely worried about our holiday situation. However I have had a completely different experience than many people on here. Our holiday to Gibraltar for End of June was cancelled a couple of weeks ago. I emailed to say I would not be re-booking as I got the holiday on a special offer. I had an immediate reply to say I could re-book for next year at no extra cost at all. Whenever I emailed with questions etc they replied within hours. By today the holiday has been booked again for next year. Andy the assistant operations manager was nothing but helpful and very prompt with replies. I hope more people get the service I have received from them.

Fleetway have been very helpful in transferring our holiday from September 2020 to May 2021. Isabella is a star and did everything expected of her and more. We have booked with Fleetway many times and will do so again in the future.

We needed to re arrange our holiday and although it took a few days to speak to someone, I eventually spoke to Isabella who was extremely patient and helpful, we are now very satisfied customers. Thank you

Fleetway travel were brilliant

Fleetway travel were brilliant, everything we requested was dealt with quickly and efficiently. Amelia handled the transfer of our holiday to next year and she was amazing. We have no complaints at all and will definetly book with them again. Thank you Amelia.

Matthew was very helpful today....

I spoke to Matthew just now and found him to be VERY helpful - he confirmed my request for a full refund would be put in place and I would receive an acknowledgement email in a few days. That it would mention 'Vouchers' but to ignore that as a FULL REFUND for my cancelled holiday had been noted. That I would require patience for this full refund to be processed. Rather different response to what has been added to Trust Pilot below so hoping that this patience is the key here.

Updated Review.

Updated Review. We have now received our Refund Credit Note for our cancelled holiday to Corfu. I received a very pleasant telephone call from Fleetways Customer Relations Manager on Monday morning and she explained that Fleetway had started work on issuing RCNs. True to her word we received a Refund Credit Note to the value of our booking valid to 31/12/2021, with the ATOL certificate and a copy of our original booking late on Tuesday evening. I can now understand Fleetways position and we feel comfortable that our money is fully protected either to book another holiday or guaranteed by ATOL if Fleetway was to cease trading. I would not have any concerns using Fleetway for future holiday bookings.

Money back quickly

I paid for all of my holiday, booked for May, by credit card. When I received the CAA's "negative response letter" on 23 /7/20 I made an immediate online claim to my credit card company with all the associated correspondence uploaded. They responded immediately and the entire holiday payment was refunded to my credit card account by the 26/7/20 (though temporarily). The credit card company will now pursue the matter. The 5* is for the Credit Card Company not for Fleetway|

Very efficient service from Isabella thank you.

Not really a holiday due to Coronavirus.

Unusual times which were hardly the fault of Fleetway due to the Coronavirus epidemic. Our holiday, which was a present from our son, didnt really happen as we were told by locals almost on the first day that flights were being cancelled and the hotel was may be closing. Sadly our brief time was spent worrying and arranging a return to the UK. Have to say though, the hotel and staff were magnificent and very supportive. They continued to create as normal an atmosphere as possible even though there were only 3 couples in the entire place so well done Donna Carmella.

Our Holiday to Spain and Morocco

Our holiday to Spain and Morocco was booked back in Dec 2019, and was scheduled to begin on 12 March. As the coronavirus situation played out, we notified Fleetway of our intent to cancel our booking on 26 Feb. After much back and forth emailing, Fleetway agreed on 16 March to issue a credit note in the full amount of our payment, to be used for travel some time over the next two years. While I did not appreciate all the email conversations required to arrive at this resolution, I did find the company largely communicative over this period of time. It's an extremely difficult time for all of us, and especially those serving the travel industry. My advice? - be patient, and hopefully you will eventually have a resolution to your own particular situation with this company. And I very much hope that Fleetway will be around after this mess has passed, so we may enjoy our "prepaid" holiday.

Great short break

Great short break. Fabulous hotel, one of the best we’ve ever stayed in. Good value too given the quality of service.

Date of experience : March 19, 2020

Cancelled trip. Refusing refund. They don’t care.

This company cancelled our trip before the government advised on all but essential travel but are breaking the 2018 Package Travel Regulations by refusing to refund our money (against the law). Not responding to email, impossible to contact via telephone. We are one of hundreds of people who are likely to never see our holiday or our hard earned money back. Please don’t fall into the same trap with these people. Don’t lose your money to them.

DISAPPOINTED

Same as other reviews was due to go holiday 8 April. Very disappointed have use Fleetway before so completely different experience this time. After numerous emails they agreed to refund but couldn’t give any idea of timescale. I think the most disappointing thing is they make no attempt to contact me just grudging reply’s which like the last review these stopped end of May. I’ve recommended them before to friends never again.

What the F.A.A. Bill Means for Travelers

The legislation, which funds federal aviation programs for the next five years, cements new passenger protections, adds new routes and lets the T.S.A. continue to expand facial recognition programs. Here’s what you need to know.

Two travelers carrying luggage, with one pulling a rolling suitcase, are in the shadows while an airport in the background is lit brightly by the sun.

By Christine Chung

Automatic refunds for significant flight disruptions, fee-free family seating and accessibility improvements.

Those are among the benefits for travelers in the bill to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration for five more years, which Congress passed on Wednesday. After months of back and forth, and several short-term extensions, it will now head to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law.

The F.A.A. oversees all plane traffic in the United States, and the bill, which Mr. Biden has signaled he will sign, grants $105 billion to the agency and $738 million to the National Transportation Safety Board. In addition to strengthening passenger protections, it will pay for airport infrastructure, salaries and safety programs, and take aim at the air traffic controller shortage.

Geoff Freeman, the president and chief executive of the U.S. Travel Association , called the renewal “a big step toward vastly improving the travel experience.”

“Measures in the bill will address delays and cancellations and other travel hassles by modernizing airport technology, boosting the air traffic control work force and investing in additional improvements to our nation’s airports and air travel system,” he added.

Here are some of the bill’s highlights for travelers.

Automatic refunds: The bill codifies the Department of Transportation’s rule on automatic refunds for passengers when a flight is significantly delayed or canceled (beyond three hours for a domestic flight and six hours for an international flight). Customers will not need to request these refunds. And airline credits must be valid for five years.

Biometrics at airport security: Despite efforts in the Senate to pause the Transportation Security Administration’s facial recognition program , the amendment didn’t make it into the final bill. The T.S.A. plans to expand the use of facial recognition technology at hundreds of airports throughout the United States.

More round-trip flights from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport: There will be an additional five long-haul round-trip flights a day at Reagan National Airport, a topic of intense debate during the bill’s negotiation. Opponents said the already busy airport could not support additional flights.

Fee-free family seating: Airlines cannot charge families with young children extra fees so that they can sit together. The bill also says the Transportation Department must create a dashboard comparing minimum seat sizes on U.S. carriers.

Penalties for airline violations: The Transportation Department’s civil penalty for consumer violations will triple to $75,000, from $25,000, per violation.

Accessibility for travelers with disabilities: The bill requires airline personnel to be trained in handling motorized wheelchairs, allows travelers to request seating to better accommodate their disabilities and will establish a new F.A.A. program dedicated to accessibility upgrades at commercial airports.

Air traffic control : Amid an ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers there has been an increase in near collisions and other safety incidents. The bill includes measures such as setting goals to maximize the hiring of new controllers and increasing access to advanced air traffic control tower simulation training.

Fire breaks out at oil depot in Russia's Krasnodar Krai

A fire broke out at an oil depot in the town of Tuapse in Russia's southern Krasnodar Krai the night of Jan. 25, Russian media outlets reported .

Multiple strikes on oil depots in Russia, including in Bryansk , Oryol , and Leningrad oblasts, were reported in January, amid increasing claims of drone attacks in Russian regions bordering Ukraine.

The Tuapse fire caused no casualties or injuries, according to preliminary information, the Krasnodar Krai administration reported.

Sergey Boyko, head of the Tuapse district, said that the fire had been localized.

According to Russian pro-Kremlin media outlet Mash, local residents reported seeing multiple drones flying over the region before and after the fire at the oil depot.

Explosions and fires in several Russian regions were reported on Jan. 21 in a possible coordinated Ukrainian strike against infrastructure targets in Russia's rear. A fire broke out at a Novatek gas plant near St. Petersburg after an alleged drone attack, causing the plant to halt operations.

Novatek is the largest independent natural gas producer in Russia. Bloomberg reported on Jan. 23 that Russian seaborne crude oil exports hit their lowest level in two months in the wake of the attack.

Ukrainian authorities rarely comment on attacks on Russian soil.

TSA at SEA and nationally prepared for busy Memorial Day weekend of air travel

SEATTLE - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for high passenger volumes leading up to the Memorial Day weekend. TSA projects it will screen more than 365,000 departing travelers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) from Thursday, May 23 through Tuesday, May 28. This is a 9.6% increase over 2023 volumes.

The two busiest days at SEA are projected to be Thursday, May 23 when more than 69,000 travelers are expected to be screened through the security checkpoints and Friday, May 24 when TSA expects to screen more than 70,000 people.

The busiest times at the checkpoint daily will be 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. All travelers will need to arrive early and prepared for every step of the air travel experience.

“We want to assure those traveling out of SEA during the Memorial Day weekend that TSA has plans in place to make the security screening process as streamlined as possible. With the temporary closure of security checkpoint 3, TSA will have all other security checkpoints and lanes in the airport staffed and open,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Washington Greg Hawko. “However, with reduced screening capacity, it is crucial that all travelers listen to directions given by airport customer service staff as well as TSA officers to make the airport experience go smoothly.”

Travel tips Here are some tips to help all travelers have a smooth trip through the security checkpoint at any airport:

  • Arrive at the airport early so you can complete every step of the airport process. Allow ample time to park, navigate to the terminal, check luggage and proceed through the TSA security screening checkpoint and get to the gate. Keep in mind, most flights board 30-45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
  • Be prepared for any scenario. Have your photo identification and boarding pass ready prior to entering the security checkpoint. This will keep you from slowing down the screening process for you and everyone behind you.
  • Listen to directions provided by TSA officers. The advisements are specific to the type of screening you will experience. The information given will make your screening experience quicker and smoother.
  • Pack smart. Always start with an empty bag to ensure you don’t inadvertently bring prohibited items to the security checkpoint. Place electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids at the top of your carry-on so they can be easily access if you are required to remove them. Also, be sure that all liquids are 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less if transporting them through the security checkpoint.
  • Get assistance prior to traveling. Ensure that carry-ons do not contain prohibited items since they slow down the security screening process. To determine whether an item is allowed or prohibited in carry-on luggage, download the MyTSA app and use the “What Can I Bring?” feature. Another option is to snap a picture of an item and send it to @AskTSA on Twitter or Facebook Messenger for real-time assistance. Travelers can also send a question by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872).
  • Double-check your luggage. Many bags look alike. Prior to traveling, passengers should tag every piece of luggage with their name and address and include additional addresses inside each bag in the event the outside tag falls off. When retrieving luggage at baggage claim, it’s important for passengers to check these tags to ensure they’ve picked up the correct bag.

TSA sets new record for number of travelers screened in a single day

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Edited By Kerry Breen

Updated on: May 25, 2024 / 8:10 PM EDT / CBS News

The Transportation Security Administration announced it screened more than 2.95 million airline passengers on Friday, setting a new record for a single day.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the agency said Saturday that it screened 2,951,163 individuals at airport checkpoints nationwide on Friday, surpassing the previous record of 2,907,378 set on the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year.

"If you flew yesterday, congratulations, you were part of a record-setting day!" said Lisa Farbstein, a spokesperson for the TSA, in a separate post.

Memorial Day Travel

Ahead of the start of Memorial Day weekend, the TSA predicted that Friday would be the busiest day for air travel, with nearly 3 million people expected to pass through airport checkpoints.

TSA screened just under 2.9 million people Thursday, coming within about 11,000 from the previous record. Five of the 10 busiest-ever travel days have been since May 16, the agency said.

Memorial Day weekend travel is also expected to break records on the roads.

The American Automobile Association, or AAA, warned of potentially unprecedented congestion on roads this weekend, along with airports that could be  even more crowded  than in years past. The organization, which looks at  various economic factors  and partners with other groups to project travel conditions,  announced  earlier this month that an estimated 43.8 million people across the United States would likely travel at least 50 miles from Thursday to Monday. That would mark a 4% increase in overall travel compared with 2023, according to AAA.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," said Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of the travel division at AAA, in a statement. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

Emily Mae Czachor also contributed to this report.

I have booked a flight-inclusive package holiday. what should i do.

If you booked a flight-inclusive package holiday, you may be protected under the ATOL scheme and should visit the ATOL website ( https://www.packpeaceofmind.co.uk/atol-failures/ ) for further information. You can tell if your booking is ATOL protected by the documents issued to you at the time you booked. ATOL holders are required to issue ATOL Certificates and ATOL confirmations (for package bookings).

If you are not under the ATOL scheme then you may be protected under the ABTA scheme and should visit this website: www.abta.com/fleetway

I am a US or non-EU resident or my booking is not protected under the ATOL or ABTA scheme. What should I do?

If you booked flights and accommodation separately, you are a non-EU resident, or your holiday is not protected under the ATOL scheme for any other reason, please see the ‘All other bookings’ section below.

All other bookings

If you do not have financial protection for your booking, other options to claim may be available to you. The options available to you will depend on your method of payment and insurance cover as outlined below.

The contact number for your card issuer is likely to be located on the reverse of your card (otherwise it can be found online).

Please note that the card issuer is the bank which issued the card to you, not the payment processor. For example, if you have a HSBC MasterCard, the card issuer is HSBC (not MasterCard).

If you paid any part of your booking on a debit card, please contact your card issuer to understand if you have any financial protection under the chargeback scheme provided you are not ATOL or ABTA protected.
