Ahead of their fourth originals studio album, Los Angeles based Retro Rock/Pop band, Fire Tiger have released a ten track covers album.

The tracks contained within transport the listener back to the Eighties and takes us on a whistlestop tour of what rocked back then whilst adding their own bit of magic to the songs.

Kicking off with the song that brought Swedish rockers, Europe into the mainstream. We are of course talking about `The Final Countdown’. Tiff Alkouri’s voice does a fine job here and the song itself gets a few more whammy bar tricks and keyboard effects added to keep it fresh.

Moving into the realms of hit films of the decade, the band launch a superb aerial assault on Kenny Loggins `Danger Zone’ taken from the Top Gun movie. The soaring vocals and ripping guitar solos found here still give me the chills of excitement that the original did.

Keeping with hit movie themes, we don our leg warmers and rock out with the ever infectious `Maniac’ by Michael Sembello, lifted from the Flashdance soundtrack.

The guitar chugs a little more than on the original which helps make an already good track sound stunning. Maybe an unusual choice but Limahl’s `Never Ending Story’ gets the Fire Tiger treatment and highlights Alkouri’s sweet but powerful voice and shows the versatility of the band as this song hits pop territory.

Baltimora’s `Tarzan Boy’ replete with its “Oh-Oh-Oh-Oh” cheesy singalong is up next before the surprisingly beautiful `Theme From Beverly Hills 90210’ kicks in. Gentle piano and guitars bond this short but sweet rack together.

On the face of it The Ramones 1976, `Blitzkrieg Pop’ sits outside of the original Eighties era of music but was, of course used in the soundtrack to the iconic `National Lampoons Vacation and Fire Tiger make a valiant effort at getting their punk edge on here.

The Dead Boys `Ain’t It Fun’ gets a real makeover and comes out sounding more positive, vibrant and exciting than the slightly depressive original whilst retaining all its attitude.

Taking a more country-based approach comes Miley Cyrus `Slide Away’. Once more Alkouri’s voice lends itself brilliantly to this track.

We bring the album to a close with one of the most haunting and iconic songs ever written. Coldplay’s `Yellow’ oozes energy here in a way that isn’t evident with Chris Martin and the boy’s version.

This is a very slick and easy to listen to album. What Tiff Alkouri, James Ramsey, Jordan Lucas, Tyler Renga and Lorenzo Maynardi have achieved here shows that as a band they are truly flexible and can inject their own spin into almost anything. It also highlights just how good their own original songs and that is where they really sparkle.

If you’ve not heard Fire Tiger’s previous releases, then you have missed out on a band that deserves to become huge. So, here’s to the next album and hopefully some worldwide live shows!!

In Conversation With – Fire Tiger

It’s a welcome return trip Stateside for my special guests ‘In Conversation’ today. Los Angeles based Fire Tiger are a band who are increasingly gaining worldwide attention and recognition. With their original songs, they are bringing classic musicality back to mainstream music, embracing rock and pop with a mixture of the past and the future. So I am delighted to welcome Fire Tiger today.

Maybe if we start with you introducing the individual members of the band? I know that you are now based in Los Angeles but where in America are you all from originally?

“Thanks so much for this interview, Malcolm. Well, we have Tiff Alkouri on vocals, James Ramsey on keyboards, Chris Cuomo on guitar, and Cahuenga Mango on drums. We are from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Chris is from Boston but also lived near San Francisco before he met us.”

How did you all meet and get together as a band? Have any of you been in previous bands?

“It started out as a Tiff and James studio project and we ended up sharing a band house together near the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. All of us have been in previous bands before. As a teenager, Tiff sang for an 80’s tribute band called Danger Zone LA. Cahuenga Mango is a character name referring to the different drummers we work with. James Decker has played drums with several signed acts such as Mixi, on Interscope. Chris Knapp played drums with The Ataris, on Columbia. They have a reunion tour next year. And Adrian Ost drums for Powerman 5000 under the name Ad7, on Universal. James also played piano with The Ataris and used to front a “heavy classical” band called Thrillswitch. Chris played guitar for an indie band called Apollo Sunshine, and has a catalogue of his own singer-songwriter music as well.”

Who chose the band name Fire Tiger?

“James wanted a double name a-la Duran Duran, Oingo Boingo, Mister Mister, a-ha, Wang Chung, etc, and liked the word “Fire”, which was missing from popular music culture at the time, but has since resurfaced.”

All your songs on the first album are written by Tiff and James. What comes first, the music or the lyrics?

“That’s a great question! The album features both, with some songs written first by Tiff with her lyrics and vocal melody, and others that originated from musical motif. In general, it’s writing the lyrics that comes first but when it’s alongside the music then it’s best, so the music can really bring out the emotion of the lyrics. When you are writing lyrics over music already finished, that can be challenging.”

What influenced your decision to write songs with an 80’s feel?

“Wow, we could write a whole book on that! We basically wanted to create music we like, and music we like seems to be what people call “80’s”. We don’t want to define ourselves only with that decade, although it is our favourite. Our goal is to help bring classic musicality, vocal style, and songwriting, which arguably peaked in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s together, back to mainstream pop culture today.”

Who are or were the bands or artists who influenced your style of music?

“Well, to name a few; Jefferson Starship, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, The Smiths, Heart, Rush, Phil Collins, Pat Benatar, Tina Turner, Mister Mister, Scandal, Simple Minds, A-Ha, Pink Floyd, Survivor, Madonna, U2.”

When did you play your first official gig and where was it?

“It was at the famous Viper Room in LA. We’ve grown a lot since then.”

Who is the biggest band that you have supported so far?

“It was Steel Panther at the House of Blues in LA.”

What has been your best gig so far?

“It was The Roxy during Oktoberfest. There were a bunch of audience members dressed in lederhosen doing a line dance to “The Same Old Song”. We will never forget that!”

What would you say is the age range of your current fans?

“Something we really like about the music of previous generations is that popular songs used to be for everybody, not just small niche demographics. Because of our old style of music, we are blessed to receive very positive comments from fans of all ages, around the World.”

Is LA a fertile place for new bands to get started?

“LA is a great city, but unfortunately it is not at the moment for aspiring bands. There are a million of them. Everybody knows somebody who is in a band, and nobody cares. A&R’s don’t walk into venues to hear unknowns anymore either, which is really sad. And many of what used to be live venues are being turned over to DJs.”

Your debut album, “Energy”, you released it yourselves on Amazon and iTunes. How close would you say you are to getting a record deal now?

“Who knows? It might happen overnight? We do need help with distribution, promotion, and touring.”

Outside of the US, how is the rest of the world responding to Fire Tiger?

“We are really excited about our global response. Fire Tiger is currently on FM radio stations in Europe and Australia, and we get a lot of Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook traffic from countries everywhere.”

What do you have planned for 2014?

“We are recording our second album, and will hopefully tour around the World, given the opportunity.”

Memphis, get ready to say 'Hello' to Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire at FedExForum show

J udging by the FedExForum calendar , it’s looking like it'll be an unusually quiet summer at the venue, with no major shows scheduled until October.

But the late spring, specifically the end of May, will mark a busy time, as the Downtown Memphis arena will host a trio of events over consecutive nights, including performances by hip-hop hitmaker Megan Thee Stallion (with Memphis' own GloRilla ) and standup comedy star Nate Bargatze .

Kicking things off will be an epic double bill of R&B/pop legends, Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire . Their co-headlining Sing A Song All Night Long Tour will make its way to FedExForum on May 29. Here’s a look at what to know before you go.

'Dancing on the Ceiling': Lionel Richie

One of the biggest and most enduring stars in pop music, Lionel Richie’s five-decade career has seen him sell 125 million albums and earn an Oscar, a Golden Globe and four Grammy Awards.

The 74-year-old Richie — who is also a member of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, a recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library Congress and a Kennedy Center Honoree — continues to serve as a judge on ABC’s “American Idol” having returned for his seventh season on the show this year.

Richie was also one of the stars of the recent Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop,” about the effort to record “We Are the World,” the humanitarian anthem that Richie co-wrote.

If recent history — including his last two stops in town at the Memphis Botanic Garden and FedExForum — is any indication, Richie’s Bluff City set should be filled with familiar hits from his ‘80s solo heyday including “Endless Love,” “Lady,” “Truly,” “All Night Long,” “Penny Lover,” “Stuck on You,” “Hello,” “Say You, Say Me” and “Dancing on the Ceiling.” Richie — who started out playing as a member of R&B outfit The Commodores — will also honor that legacy, with songs like “Three Times a Lady,” “Still” and “Easy.”

'Shining Star': Earth, Wind & Fire

Joining Richie on the tour and for the Memphis stop will be Earth, Wind & Fire. The group — founded by late Memphis native Maurice White in 1969 — is still going strong, continuing an illustrious career that has seen the band inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, sell more than 100 million records and earn six Grammy Awards, to go along with 18 nominations (including one earlier this year for Best Traditional R&B Performance as a featured artist on Victoria Monét’s song "Hollywood”).

The group, which has played Memphis regularly over the years, most recently headlined the  2023 Beale Street Music Festival . The veteran band is led by White’s brother, bassist Verdine White, singer Philip Bailey and drummer Ralph Johnson.

Fans can expect a show filled with Earth, Wind & Fire hits and classics from “Shining Star” to “Boogie Wonderland” to “September.”

Sing A Song All Night Long Tour

The Richie/Earth, Wind & Fire team-up in 2024 is a continuation of last year’s highly successful Sing A Song All Night Long Tour, which saw them make their way through several major North America markets including Chicago, Boston, Toronto, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

In addition to Memphis, the upcoming tour will also play nearby markets, including a tour kickoff in Knoxville on May 23, and a date in Richie’s home state of Alabama, with a show in Birmingham on May 28.  

Tickets to Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire in Memphis

Tickets for the Richie/Earth, Wind & Fire concert have been selling briskly, but for those who haven’t purchased seats yet, some good options remain. The best options, or at least the closest, are a selection of floor seats in the midpoint of the arena, which cost $127. For roughly the same price point, you can get side seating, slightly closer to the stage, but higher up.

The cheapest seats that are still available will by the upper rafters of FedExForum — these seats are part of a sale by promoters Live Nation and cost $25, though they may not last much longer.

In fact, looking at the latest Ticketmaster map, there’s a good chance that the concert may sell out completely before showtime. In which case, verified resale seats from Ticketmaster are also available, ranging from $50 to $460.
