Octopath Traveler 2 How to Fast Travel

Where and How to Fast Travel in Octopath Traveler 2

Image of J.R. Waugh

Octopath Traveler 2 enables you to discover new realms while playing as any of its 8 distinctive characters. You can take on all challenges and learn their techniques as Hikari, or play as the captivating rogue Throné and steal the show. But you’ll quickly discover it’s a large world, spread across diverse regions full of danger, and it’s good to know landmarks to which you can return. One key mechanic to learn is how and where you can Fast Travel in Octopath Traveler 2 .

How to Fast Travel in Octopath Traveler 2

The simplest answer here is to press ‘X / △ / Y’ on your gamepad, depending on which system, to bring up the menu, open ‘World Map’, then select the location to which you wish to Fast Travel. Select the location and if you can Fast Travel, a window will pop up asking for you to confirm. With this being said, there are some caveats to where you can Fast Travel that you may have missed.

Where You Can Fast Travel in Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath-Traveler-2-Where-to-Fast-Travel

The game’s tutorial can always be consulted on this, but you can only Fast Travel to towns and ports in Octopath Traveler 2. If you’re in the middle of a character-focused chapter such as their intro, you won’t be able to take this option, either. But this also prevents you from going to a non-town/port place like the Northern Conning Creek Coast or the Southern Cropdale Trail, even if you know there’s Slumber Sage just nearby.

The best advice to consider is to make your way to each of the hub cities where you meet your initial characters to establish your Fast Travel points all around the map, and take advantage as much as possible.

You certainly can level-grind your way through dangerous areas between these cities, but this can reach a point of diminishing returns. Sometimes you have to work smarter, not harder, in order to get where you need to go.

It’s easy to get around in Octopath Traveler 2 , especially since fast travel unlocks in the game so swiftly. As every place is connected by actual roads and areas, rather than there being a more traditional JRPG world map, it could be a long time to get from one place to the other without it. In short, all you ever need to do is reach a place once.

How to Fast Travel in Octopath Traveler 2

How Do You Fast Travel in Octopath Traveler 2 ?

Let’s use Throne as an example. Her story starts in New Delsta. This means that right away, it is unlocked as a fast travel point. One of the next nearest cities is the town of Flamechurch. If you head north to it, it will unlock as one of these points as well. So then someone could bring up the main menu, choose “World Map,” and then select New Delsta as a place to teleport to.

Keep in mind that this only works for cities. You can’t teleport to dungeons or other, smaller areas. However, even if a town is small or abandoned, as long as there is an inn there, it seems to be a place you can quickly hop to in the game.

Octopath Traveler 2 is available for the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC. A demo is available .

How To Fast Travel In Octopath Traveler 2

In Octopath Traveler 2, you can unlock the ability to fast travel to towns and villages you have already visited.

Octopath Traveler 2 Fast Travel

Octopath Traveler 2 features a massive world for you to explore. If you intend to find all of its secrets and treasures on foot, you are going to be investing a lot of time. Hence, it is far better to make use of the many Octopath Travel 2 fast travel locations to save time.

The biggest advantage of fast travel is that you can skip towns and villages to avoid all enemy encounters between them. However, similar to the first game, you will need to first unlock the feature.

How to unlock fast travel in Octopath Traveler 2

In Octopath Traveler 2, you have to finish and complete Chapter 1 to unlock the ability to fast travel. As soon as you do that, you just need to visit another town, and boom, fast travel is unlocked.

The prerequisites that are told above are true for most of the characters in Octopath Traveler 2 except for Osvald’s story. For him, you have to complete yet another chapter which is Chapter 2, and then visit another town to unlock it.

How to use Octopath Traveler 2 fast travel

Fast Travelling to another town is a rather easy task which can be done by following the steps given below:

  • Depending on the console, press Triangle (PlayStation), X (Nintendo Switch), or I (PC) to access the main menu.
  • From there, head into the World Map.
  • Once you are on the World Map, select any location that you want to Fast Travel to.
  • Finally, confirm your visit by checking the popup that appears after that.

Where can you fast travel?

After unlocking Fast Travel, you might be thinking that you can Fast Travel to any place but it’s true for only towns and ports that are visited before.

You also cannot Fast Travel if you are doing a chapter associated with any character. Fast Travel however is also not possible for places that are not towns such as dungeons or port places such as Conning Creek Coast.

Therefore, the best way to get there fast is to Fast Travel to their nearest town or village and head on foot afterward. That way, you can take advantage of Fast Travel and also skip dangerous intertown places.

Octopath Traveler 2 – How to Get to Eastern Continent

Image of Sam Reader

Octopath Traveler II , the hotly anticipated sequel to the smash-hit multi-viewpoint JRPG Octopath Traveler, has landed. The new game in the HD-2D franchise boasts eight new characters in an all-new setting, this time in an even bigger world spanning two continents and several islands between them. With this new expansive world, travel can look a little daunting, especially when one of the eight characters is on an island entirely by herself. Luckily, there are several ways to get to the Eastern Continent, so you can zip across the ocean to your heart’s content. With this guide, you won’t find yourself stranded any time soon.

The Easiest Way: Character Selection

A map featuring three characters. In the center is a quill.

Pick a character on the Eastern Continent. The beauty of having two continents this time is that the eight characters are split between the east and west continents. The Eastern Continent also has the more versatile character list. Osvald, Throné, and Temenos are on the Eastern side of the map. The easiest (and simplest) way to get to the Eastern Continent is to just be on the Eastern Continent from the start. A little rudimentary, yes, but the best way to go anywhere is simply to already be there.

A character portrait of a hunter greedily chomping on meat with a description of Hunter Ochette.

You can also just pick Ochette. Beasting Bay Anchorage on Ochette’s home island of Toto’haha makes trips to New Delsta Harbor Anchorage. Ochette’s a little difficult of a character to get a handle on (Beastmaster is a job that’s best played when you know what you’re getting into), but once you get a handle on her unique mechanics, she’s a lot of fun.

The Normal Way: Catching The Ferry

A ferry at night on a shore. A wooden gangplank is in front of it. The shot is from Octopath Traveler

Perhaps rather than pick someone on the Eastern Continent, you decided on someone from the West. Maybe you read our guide on best starting characters . Maybe you decided to go with the sweetest cinnamon roll in the cast, Agnea. Maybe the East just didn’t grab you the same way the West or Toto’haha did. If that’s the case, then progress through the first chapter of your chosen character’s story. Once you’re let loose into the open world, make your way to Crackridge Harbor Anchorage, east of Cropdale. This will take you to the New Delsta Harbor, which is northwest of New Delsta.

A ferry at night on a tropical island

You can also use the ship at Canalbrine, which will also take you south to the Beasting Bay Anchorage in Toto’haha. From there, you can access the New Delsta ferry as well. This works wonders if you went with Casttia, as she starts out right in Canalbrine and right by the ferry.

This method isn’t free, though. It will cost you, and how much depends on the route. All prices are the same between the two locations, regardless of which direction:

  • Crackridge Harbor Anchorage/New Delsta Harbor: 2500 leaves
  • New Delsta Harbor/Beasting Bay: 1500 Leaves
  • Beasting Bay/Canalbrine: 1000 Leaves

The Advanced Way: Fast Travel

fast travel octopath 2

Once you unlock fast travel, you can just wing yourself across the coasts to your heart’s content. Hit the minus button to bring up the world map, and click on the appropriate town. You’ll instantly be transported wherever you need to go. You’ll miss out on experience and the possibility of an Octopuff Traveler (this game’s money and experience pinata) or two, but if you need to get to another continent, there’s no faster way to do it. This way also works if you pick someone on the Eastern Continent to start. Throné is a good one, as she starts right near one of the harbors.

How to farm EXP in Octopath Traveler 2

Grab those Octopuff Travelers and Caits, or maybe try a funny Bewildering Grace strategy

Temenos as a scholar faces off against an adorable Octopuff Traveler

There isn’t a particularly “broken” method for farming EXP in Octopath Traveler 2 , but there are some things you can do to minimize the pain of grinding.

The best thing to do to farm EXP is to just fight enemies in the highest level place you have access to and can handle . You can swap in lower leveled characters into your party while one or two of your high-leveled characters carry the weight. However, if you do this, you’ll need to make sure that none of the characters you want to level are dead at the end of the fight because dead characters get no EXP.

Also make sure to equip EXP-increasing accessories and support skills . Thief has “Life in the Shadows,” which increases EXP and Job Point (JP) gains at night. Scholar has “Extra Experience” which boosts EXP after every battle. You can also wear an EXP Augmentor accessory to boost EXP gains further.

You’ll also want to make sure to kill any Octopuff Travelers or Caits you come across while grinding. These reward extra money, JP, and EXP, so make sure to kill them before they flee. We recommend using elemental damage skills, as physical damage will often miss them and magic never misses.

You can increase your chances of seeing Caits and Octopuff Travelers by wearing Cait Powder and an Octopuff Pot , respectively. You can steal an Octopuff Pot from an NPC in Conning Creek and find a Cait Powder in a chest in Tropu’hopu. Conning Creek is the city below where you unlock Castti and Tropu’hopu is the city to the east of where you unlock Ochette. Hunters also have a support skill that will increase the chances of finding a rare monster.

Using the gambling Bewildering Grace strategy

You can also do the “ Bewildering Grace ” RNG strategy using Partitio with the dancer secondary class .

Partitio performs Bewildering Grace for some birds in Octopath Traveler 2

Bewildering Grace is a dancer skill that costs 25 SP and performs a random action. You can boost it so it does more random actions in one turn: It can kill your party instantly, summon a monster to deal damage to the enemies, turn the enemies into Caits, debuff your party... the list goes on.

However, lucky players will see EXP multipliers . It’s possible for your EXP to double or quintuple from the effects of Bewildering Grace, which is a huge payout, especially if you use it against, say, a boss enemy or a Cait. Extremely lucky players will see a huge 100x EXP payout, which is likely enough EXP to set that character for the rest of the game. (Remember, gear matters more than levels, ultimately.)

Partitio specifically can use his latent ability to max out his BP at the start of battle , allowing him to do a fully boosted Bewildering Grace in the first turn . With his merchant support skill, “ Full Power ,” he will start the battle with a maxed out latent ability gauge. If you don’t get the EXP multiplier you want, you can try again on a later turn, but if you push your luck too much, the outcome might not be favorable (your party can literally explode and die).

You can equip the dancer support skill “ The Show Goes On ” (which will save you with 1 HP from a lethal attack) to help Partitio survive these explosions, but there’s no guarantee that you won’t just get hit again after.

That said, if you’re using this strategy, make sure to save often. If you use this strategy for a boss, we recommend using Bewildering Grace right at the start of the battle. If you roll some bad outcomes, you can just restart the battle again no problem.

Octopath Traveler 2: How To Get Extremely Powerful Gear Early | Best Weapons Locations

Become an Octobuff Traveler.

fast travel octopath 2

Dedicated players can unlock end-game weapons and gear in Octopath Traveler 2 — if you know where to look. Some of the best gear in the game is located in gold chests or sold by merchants that anyone can access, even very early in the game. The areas of open-world are split into three different tiers, with the highest level equipment located in the Level 45+ locations — or on the Sundering Sea, but we’ll get to that later. These powerful weapons are literally sitting around just waiting to be collected. And we’re going to explain where to get them.

Octopath Traveler 2 is completely nonlinear. You can follow the story or grind endlessly until you can take on endgame threats. If you’re not prepared, certain boss fights in the story can absolutely blow your party out of the water. It always helps to get the best weapons, and no matter what part of the game you’re in, the weapons below are extremely useful. Even for end-game players, these hidden weapons are shockingly powerful. There are better weapons to find — but you’ll need to be a high-level party to get them. To get these weapons? All you need to do is reach the treasure chests sitting out in the environment.

To make exploring high level areas easier, you’ll want to use Fast Travel and two important skills. After collecting a chest in a dangerous region, fast-travel to the nearest town. You’ll also want to visit each town on the path to permanently unlock the fast travel point.

  • Evil Ward : Cleric Skill. Makes running away from battles easier. On average, I always escaped battles on the first or second try.
  • Evasive Maneuvers : Scholar Skill. Makes random battles appear less often.

With these two skills equipped, you’ll have a much easier time exploring Level 45+ (Tier 3) regions.

Octopath Traveler 2 review: Eight is a crowd

Octopath Traveler 2 takes some major leaps from its predecessor, but still feels like a lot of unrealized potential.

Ozzie Mejia

Throughout the last decade, Square Enix has been getting more ambitious with its Japanese role playing games. One of its more interesting ideas came in 2018 with the release of Octopath Traveler, a classic-style JRPG that focuses on eight different protagonists. It wasn't a perfect effort, but it showed a lot of potential for the future. Five years later, Square Enix and ACQUIRE Corp have returned with Octopath Traveler 2, which follows the exploits of eight brand new heroes who share little in common with one another. It's a game that capably builds on its predecessor with some exciting new ideas, mechanics, and character interactions, but still doesn't feel like it's the best game it could be.

Magnificent eight

The start of Ochette's story in Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler 2 has eight different protagonists. The "lead" character is ultimately determined by the player at the start of the game, as the story will start out with the origin of the chosen hero. After that character's opening chapter, it's time to embark into an expansive world. The dev team gives players a sizable world to explore, one that spans three continents. The towns all look mostly the same and the connecting roads don't add too much, so expect to use the fast travel feature often. Things get more interesting much farther into the game when players unlock sea travel, which opens up new horizons and engaging battles.

Those looking for traditional turn-based battles will love what they see with Octopath Traveler 2. Each character can wield different weapons and use select elemental magic spells. For the first half of the game, the challenge is in mixing and matching party members. Only four characters can battle at a time, meaning players have to determine who fits what situation. This gets easier much later in the game once secondary jobs become available and expand each character's weapon and magic capabilities.

All of this feeds into the Break and Boost system, which plays similarly to other Square Enix JRPGs like Bravely Default. The Boost mechanic means characters can bank moves to string together later into a combination of strikes that do heavier damage. The Break system involves exploiting enemy weaknesses. If a foe is hit with a weapon or magic spell that they're weak to, it will deplete their Break meter. Once it's depleted completely, the enemy is stunned and susceptible to greater damage. It's a system that makes prioritizing specific enemies critical and puts an emphasis on plotting out which characters should attack with which attacks.

Calling in an assist in Octopath Traveler 2

It's all of this combined with each protagonist's individual abilities that make Octopath Traveler 2's combat so enjoyable. Some characters have special abilities that only activate during the day or night. They also have special Latent Powers that trigger after a certain number of turns. Some will deal greater damage, others will affect the Break and Boost systems, and some can take area-of-effect spells and focus them on a single target and vice versa. The combat system is refreshingly deep, which is what makes some of the game's shortcomings that much more frustrating. More on that shortly.

Traveling across the overworld and battling enemies gets deeper with the aforementioned day and night cycle. Each character has two different Path Actions, one for the day and one to use at night. Some are helpful while others are also helpful, but take players down a morally ambiguous path. I liked the idea of these Path Actions, but the problem is that a lot of them start to feel too similar to one another. For example, Partitio the Merchant can hire townspeople to aid in battle, but Agnea the Dancer can "Allure" them to follow her. In essence, it's the same thing. Similarly, about three characters have different abilities that let them challenge NPCs to battle. Few of these Path Actions truly stood out and, worse, I frequently didn't feel the need to use them, because I was getting by just fine without them.

The heroes of their own story

The start of Castti's story in Octopath Traveler 2

Let's take a moment to discuss the eight Octopath Traveler 2 stories, because they're honestly some of the highlights of the game. As one might expect, some of these tales are better than others. The ones that hit, though, are genuinely compelling. Temenos the Cleric taking players into a murder mystery, Castti the Apothecary struggling to regain her memory, Osvald the Scholar's quest for murderous revenge on the man who framed him for a heinous crime, and Hikari the Warrior looking to overthrow his warlord brother and regain his lost kingdom are strong enough narratives that they could carry a game by themselves. I greatly enjoyed the character's motives, their quirks, and even some of the voice acting and all of these tales are enhanced by some of the most beautiful HD-2D graphics I've seen to date. This art style continues to amaze and they're a treat in Octopath Traveler 2, thanks to some gorgeously detailed landscapes that are complemented by some amazing lighting effects.

Granted, not all of it is perfect. Family members passing by as I played Partitio the Merchant's story couldn't help but mock his prospector accent. There were some issues with the voice acting and some of the delivery, though that's much more noticeable because of a bigger problem. Some of the cutscenes and narrative plot points drag way too long. There isn't enough of a balance between story and gameplay, which becomes a much greater issue for reasons I'll get into in just a little bit. (Wait until I talk about the grind.) I came to like these characters a lot, but I would have liked to see shorter cutscenes and more action and gameplay woven into the story.

On the topic of characters, one of the biggest criticisms of the original Octopath Traveler was that characters too often didn't interact with one another. Square and ACQUIRE do make an effort to address this. In addition to each character getting their own stories with individual chapters, there will often be chapter interludes in which two protagonists' stories will intersect. This goes a long way towards making this game feel more like an ensemble tale. The game also makes an attempt in later chapters to have protagonists banter with their party members through a series of dialogue balloons, a dynamic that feels like it's pulled out of a Sunday comics page.

The start of Temenos' story in Octopath Traveler 2

Unfortunately, even with Octopath Traveler 2's noticeable improvements, the game isn't without critical issues. First, even with the attempts to tie characters into each other's stories, they still feel like solitary tales at their core. When running through an individual character's chapters, the game still treats it as their story alone. The rest of the party is superfluous and, in fact, sometimes NPCs won't even acknowledge their existence. For example, the later chapters of Throne's story had her traveling with her party and fighting with her colleagues, but cutscenes and dialogue will play out as if she's by herself. I wouldn't describe this as bad, but I would say that it's a glaring example of this series not living up to its potential. I talked about the Sunday comics-style dialogue, but that honestly feels tacked on and ultimately adds nothing to the story.

The much more serious issue is that Octopath Traveler 2 is grindy to an unbearable degree. I've gotten used to grindy in my Square Enix RPGs, particularly during the last few years, and the slog to level up never gets any easier. It's especially egregious here. It isn't long before characters need to level into their 30s and 40s in order to continue their stories. Worse, the party only fits four at a time and idle party members don't earn experience. Add to that the paltry amounts of EXP that enemies give out (even with party member perks that award extra experience points) and it tacks tens of unnecessary hours onto this journey.

The long road ahead

Octopath Traveler 2 puts in a good effort to improve on the original. A refined combat design, engaging characters, interesting stories, eye catching environments, and a dynamite soundtrack make this a game worth experiencing. It's a strong outing, one that will do right by classic JRPG fans. Unfortunately, it gets undone by awkward narrative pacing and an unbearably long grind. I didn't go into this game expecting a short journey and I knew what I was getting into with this love letter to old school JRPGs, but when I looked at the game clock and saw that 20-25 hours had passed and I barely made a dent in the overall narrative, it felt almost discouraging.

I give Square Enix and ACQUIRE Corp props for ambition, but there's still a ways to go before the Octopath Traveler lives up to its potential and reaches its final form.

This review is based on a Nintendo Switch digital code provided by the publisher. Octopath Traveler 2 will be available Friday, February 24 on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch for $59.99 USD. The game is rated T.

Octopath Traveler: How to Fast Travel

Image of Hayes Madsen

How to Fast Travel in Octopath Traveler

Octopath Traveler is the gorgeous new retro-style RPG from Square Enix and the developers of Bravely Default, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. The world of Octopath Traveler is sprawling, with various dungeons, towns, secrets, and more. Of course, with a massive world to explore and so many different areas depending on which character you choose, you’ll want to get around as quickly as possible. Luckily, the game does feature a form of fast travel to help with just that. Here’s what you need to know about fast traveling.

Fast traveling is easy in Octopath Traveler, as all you need to do is just open the menu with X, select the world map, and then select whichever town you want to travel to. It’s important to note that the fast travel system will only take you to towns, and you won’t be able to travel to the entrance of dungeons or anything else. Of course, it’s always possible that this could change in a later update, but for the time being it’s still easy enough to get around the game’s world.

Octopath Traveler gives you a choice of starting with one of eight different protagonists, although you’ll eventually meet everyone else by the end. Each protagonist has their own specific traits and abilities, and their stories will weave together in interesting ways. The location each protagonist starts in the world will determine the special trait they can use. For example, Ophilia and Primrose can guide NPCs and even use them as guest summons in battle.

And that’s all you need to know to fast travel in Octopath Traveler. For our full thoughts on the game, be sure to check out our review . Or, if you’re looking for tips, tricks, and guides to help you reach the end of your adventure, our wiki is ready and waiting to help you out.

Square Enix Shadow Drops Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 Alongside Surprise Update

S quare Enix has made the Octopath Traveler series available on all console platforms as well as Xbox Game Pass as part of a multi-pronged shadow-drop.

Octopath Traveler , first released on Nintendo Switch in 2018, is now available to buy on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for the first time. Octopath Traveler 2 , which launched on Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC in 2023, is now available for the first time on Xbox Series X and S and Xbox One, including launching straight into subscription service Xbox Game Pass. Both Octopath Traveler games are now in the Game Pass library across Xbox and PC.

Octopath Traveler is a well-received role-playing series with a unique HD-2D art style, with 2D characters in 3D worlds. Both games are a standalone experience set in different worlds with eight distinct protagonists, each with their own stories to explore and Path Actions to use.

IGN's Octopath Traveler review returned a 9.3. We said: "Octopath Traveler's beautiful style and outstanding take on traditional turn-based combat make it a game that pushes JRPGs forward rather than simply paying homage to the greats." IGN's Octopath Traveler 2 review scored a 7: "Octopath Traveler 2 is a very enjoyable JRPG sequel that feels a little too safe and familiar," we said. Square Enix said the Octopath Traveler series has sold over four million copies worldwide.

Team Asano, the Square Enix group led by Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler designer Tomoya Asano, released a surprise free update for Octopath Traveler 2 that includes Extra Battle mode, which becomes available after defeating the final boss in the final chapter. The Extra Battle mode lets players test their skills against newly added tough opponents, including the main characters of Octopath Traveler, Square Enix said. This mode is available on Xbox consoles from launch and has been added to the PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC versions today, June 6, via an update.

Octopath Traveler 2 update 1.1.0 patch notes:

Title Screen

• Added new mode: Extra Battles (available after clearing the story).

Miscellaneous

• Edited the credits. • Edited various graphics. • Implemented new tutorial text for update additions.

10 things you probably didn’t know about Pinehurst No. 2

  • Follow on Twitter

With practice rounds underway at the U.S. Open, the world's best are getting acquainted with the course. Time for us to do the same.

Joann Doast

Practice rounds are underway at Pinehurst No. 2 as the world’s best prepare for this week’s U.S. Open . But why should those guys get all the intel? Course knowledge matters to spectators too. With that in mind, we are offering some fodder for your U.S. Open watch party. Here are 10 things about the championship venue that you probably didn’t know.

1. It was a professional pivot for Donald Ross

Donald Ross was the most prolific architect of the early 20th century. But he wasn’t a designer when he first set foot in Pinehurst. James Walker Tufts, the Boston soda fountain magnate who founded the resort, brought Ross on as Pinehurst’s golf professional in 1900, but as the property evolved, so did Ross’s role. The rest is history.

2. The resort was meant to be a wellness retreat

In 1895, when Walker Tufts purchased the some-6,000 acres that would become Pinehurst, he had in mind a wellness retreat for wealthy travelers, believing as he did that the pine-scented air could help cure tuberculosis. It can’t. Nor can it fix your slice.

3. The greens weren’t always green

No. 2 is renowned for its turtleback greens . But those famed putting surfaces weren’t there at the beginning. From 1907, when the course was built, until 1935, its greens were a mix of oil and sand. They transitioned to grass in 1936, in time for Pinehurst to host the PGA Championship.

4. Ross lived on site

From 1925 until his death in 1948, Ross lived in a home overlooking the third hole. The residence still stands, and operates today as Dornoch Cottage. For $2,500, you can rent it two-and-a-half hours in the evening, a privilege that comes with a welcome reception, a farm-to-table dinner (menus starting at $130 per person) and a putting contest on the third green.

5. He tinkered, and tinkered

With No. 2 in his backyard, Ross had ample opportunity to work and rework the design he treasured. Among the myriad changes he made over the years was adding the 3rd and 6th holes, neither of which was part of the original routing.

Donald Ross

6. That 6th is fierce

The 6th is a par 3, but at 216 yards, it’s no pushover. At the 2014 U.S. Open, it played the toughest on the course in relation to par, with a 3.37 stroke average for the week. In the third round that year, eventual winner Martin Kaymer found the green in regulation, then putted off it. He made bogey.

7. It hosted the Masters of its day

The North and South Open, first held at No. 2 in 1902, was a high-wattage golf event, one of the most prestigious in the country, and the “it” tournament of the southeast. Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Walter Hagen all won it three times. Byron Nelson won it once. So did Tommy Bolt, in 1951, the swan song for the event. The pros wanted fatter purses, and that didn’t fly with Pinehurst patriarch Richard Tufts, who instead held steady in support of an amateur version of the tournament. The North & South Amateur, now in its 124th year, has given rise to such champs as Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Davis Love III, and, most recently, Nick Dunlap, who also won a PGA Tour event before turning pro this year.

8. It was the site of Hogan’s first professional win

Hogan’s first win in the North & South, in 1940, was also his first in his seven years as a pro. At the trophy presentation, where he was handed $1,000 in cash, he drank a glass of milk in celebration.

paynestewartpinehurst1999.jpg

9. You can try to replicate Payne Stewart’s putt

For Sunday resort play through the year, Pinehurst cuts the cup on the 18th hole where it was in 1999, giving guests a chance to drain the same putt Payne Stewart made to clinch that year’s U.S. Open. Psst: the putt starts out breaking right, but, as the late, great Pinehurst caddie Willie McRae was fond of pointing out, it drifts left at the end.

10. It’s where ‘maniacs’ train their games

The practice range at Pinehurst is known as ‘Maniac Hill’ for the pounding it received from obsessive pros back in the early decades of the North and South Open. With an estimated 10 million balls still hit here every year, it remains a popular spot for seeking answers in the dirt.
