Couple’s Dream Wedding Shattered by Cruise Line Shutdown

  • June 6, 2024

A couple from New Zealand was forced to cancel their wedding after discovering that their cruise would no longer go through. They later learned that their cruise line, P&O Cruises Australia, was being shut down.

Pacific explorer Australia

On June 3, parent company Carnival Corporation announced that it was phasing out the P&O Cruises Australia brand and integrating it under Carnival Cruise Line. The organizational changes will be finalized by March 2025.

Kerryn Pegram and his fiancée had booked an onboard wedding for May 2025. Together with over 100 friends and family, they dreamed of having their ceremony on the Pacific Explorer .

However, they didn’t know it was scheduled to be retired in February next year.

After paying P&O Cruises Australia approximately $3,700, they received a refund and ensured their friends and extended family could do the same.

Discovering the Cruise Cancellation by Accident

Perryn unceremoniously learned their wedding cruise had been canceled while checking on a friend’s booking. The system suddenly displayed a warning that there were no records of their voyage.

After following customer service’s instructions to check again in 48 hours, he discovered that the cruise brand was about to cease operations.

According to a Carnival Corporation spokesperson, anyone booking after March 2 will be reimbursed.

Additional onboard credits will be offered to those interested in booking another cruise. Meanwhile, other P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Cruise Line voyages have not been affected.

Earlier this week, Carnival Corporation explained that it is restructuring to optimize its operations in the South Pacific.

P&O Cruise Australia to shut down after almost a century of voyages

One of Australia’s most famous companies will be no more after a shock announcement today.

‘I would die’: Terrifying beach find

One of the most famous cruise liners to sail around Australia will be no more, with the shock announcement that P&O Cruises Australia will cease to exist from early 2025.

The family-friendly cruise brand will wind up operations after almost a century of voyages, its parent company Carnival Cruises announced on Tuesday.

Avid cruisers have told news.com.au they fear the “Aussie spirit” on board the beloved brand will be lost, with some fearing their holidays will never be the same.

The P&O Australia brand will instead be folded into Carnival Cruise Line, which has sailed across the South Pacific since 2013.

While the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships, which are currently under the P&O banner, will carry on sailing under the Carnival name, the Pacific Explorer ship will no longer operate in Australian waters.

P&O Australia will be no more from early 2025.

A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise said current itineraries booked with P&O Cruises Australia will “operate business as usual” and guests will be “notified in the coming days” of any changes to future bookings as a result of the announcement.

Josh Weinstein, chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc said the operating costs and the South Pacific’s “small population” had weighed in on the decision.

“P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region,” Mr Weinstein said.

“However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific’s small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we’re adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region.”

P&O Cruises Australia will continue operations until March next year before Carnival Cruises absorbs P&O customers on board one of their ships: the Sydney-based Carnival Splendour and Carnival Adventure, and Brisbane-based Carnival Encounter and Carnival Luminosa .

P&O Cruises Australia is a popular brand for families especially. Source: Supplied

According to The Daily Telegraph , Christine Duffy — president of Carnival Cruise Line — travelled in from America ahead of the announcement, warning there would be job losses as a result of the decision.

“This is not an easy decision for the company to shut down or sunset the P&O Australia brand,” she said.

“We will continue to maintain an office here in Sydney. We don’t want to get into the numbers of people this impacts.”

Ms Duffy said there will be no immediate changes to the way passengers typically enjoy and experience a P&O ship, with “the same crew, the same entertainers, the same themed cruises and the same dining,” she said.

P&O Pacific Adventure will be folded and rebranded into Carnival Cruises.

It is understood alongside the rebrand, some of the biggest updates for passengers will be technology upgrades and other small changes to the ships.

“The most notable change will be the availability of our popular HubApp, enabling guests to make online dining and excursion reservations, request food and beverage delivery, and chat with other guests, among other features,” Ms Duffy explained.

“P&O Cruises Australia guests will also be invited to participate in Carnival’s loyalty program and promotional offerings specific to Carnival ships sailing in the region.”

It is understood that Carnival’s longstanding company executive Peter Little will

continue to lead the team in Australia.

P&O Pacific Explorer will fold into the Carnival Cruise brand.

As a much loved brand — especially among families — social media users were quick to share their sadness at the cruise brand’s closure.

“RIP P&O,” one wrote.

“So many memories on those ships,” another added.

“End of an era … Going on one this Friday better make the most of it,” another added.

“So sad to see the end of P&O – and especially sad to likely see the end of super cheap cruise prices.”

Avid Sydney cruiser Honida Beram who runs cruising blog Cruising with Honey and has been on more than two dozen P&O cruises in her lifetime.

Speaking to news.com.au, Ms Beram said the closure of the cruise brand was the “end of an era” and a “massive loss” for Australians.

There are fears the rebranding won’t give the same P&O vibe for passengers.

“The P&O legacy in Australia is synonymous with cruising in Australia. This is a huge loss, and the Aussie spirit will be lost in this amalgamation,” she said.

“P&O has made cruising accessible to families and for those at the lower end of market … given Aussies ability to holiday on a low budget and with low organisation.

“Carnival is the same price point but a very different type of cruising.”

Ms Beram said the biggest loss for her with the “Australian flare” the P&O brand offers to cruisers.

P&O Cruises are known as a popular family choice.

“I’m not sure how they [Carnival] will mirror that,” she explained.

“I think the P&O brand will be lost. When you go on a P&O there’s an instant connection and a laid back approach. You feel at home and comfortable.

“Carnival is a very different product to P&O. It’s a different vibe [so] it seems like there will be some mismatch there to bring people who are loyal P&O cruisers to go to Carnival.

What happens to current P&O Australia bookings

It’s perhaps the biggest question on the lips of many P&O cruisers who have bookings lingering in the next year or two.

What does this mean for current and future guest bookings made with P&O?

According to Carnival Cruises, business is “operating as usual and “there are no changes to any itineraries in 2024.”

While Pacific Explorer is leaving the fleet in February 2025, it is understood all guests with bookings that are affected are being notified this week.

“A small number of itineraries will be impacted on Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure as we transition the ships into Carnival Cruise Line operations,” the statement read.

“Our valued guests will be notified in coming days of any changes to bookings as a result of this announcement.”

A spokesperson from Carnival Cruises confirmed that guests booked to travel on the impacted itineraries have been offered a full refund or they can choose a Future Cruise Credit with bonus on-board spending money (value depend on length of cruise booked).

This Aussie traveller made a mistake in Bali that saw her fined $500 – but it could have been a lot worse.

It was once a Queen of the ocean. But now, one of Australia’s most loved cruise ships faces a rather eerie fate.

A man strolling along a stretch of sand in Singapore has stumbled upon a creature some have described as the stuff of nightmares.

Dubbed Starfish Lagoon, the zone is the fourth of five to be unveiled by the cruise line ahead of the resort’s opening on Grand Bahama Island next July. The line plans more than 500 visits among 18 of the line’s ships from Florida ports Port Canaveral, PortMiami, Tampa and Jacksonville as well as six other U.S. ports.

One highlight will be the 10-story Suncastle structure that will be home to two 350-foot-long water slides named after the Bahamas’ national bird and fish: the pink Flash Flamingo and blue Mach III Marlin. The pair offer riders the option to race one another down through a twisting path amid flashing lights and colors into a photo finish splashdown.

For the younger set, there will be the Guppy Grotto splash pad themed to coral reefs with a 2-foot-deep wading pool, water toys, dump bucket and other interactive features. Parents can keep watch from a shaded area while also having access to an adjacent ice cream shop.

The area is also centered on one of the largest freshwater lagoons built in either the Caribbean or Bahamas, and for an extra cost, families can rent one of 12 floating AquaBanas, floating cabanas with room for eight, located around a peninsula with a dedicated bar. The line has land-based cabanas and daybeds as well.

The lagoon and its stretch of beach also will be home to kayak and paddleboard rentals.

For the active set, there’s a game pavilion with table games including foosball, pingpong and corn hole and the sports court area with volleyball, basketball and pickleball among its offerings.

Adults will have their own swim-up bar while lounging options will include hammocks adjacent the the Suncastle, and all along the beach will be sun loungers and umbrellas.

Food options will include restaurants, snack and bar shacks as well as Bahamian food trucks.

“At Carnival, we carry more children than any other cruise line, so we’ve designed Starfish Lagoon specifically for family fun,” said Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy in a press release.  “Toddlers, teens and adults alike will find their own piece of paradise whether it be racing down one of the water slides, playing a round of pickleball or relaxing on our floating AquaBanas.”

The previously announced sections, which the line calls portals, include the welcome area Paradise Plaza, adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon and the shopping district Lokono Cove. Details on the final portal, an adults-only area, will be revealed later. Future expansion will build beyond the five portals including the construction of a water park.

The 369-acre site less than 20 miles east of Freeport that’s the largest port construction project in the line’s history will be the first dedicated to Carnival Cruise Line, although Carnival ships have used sister line destinations Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay for years.

The port of call will open with one dock capable of handling its largest ships, the 6,000-passenger Excel class, including Port Canaveral-based Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration out of Miami.

The line announced this year a $100 million plan to expand that with a second dock so that it could handle up to four such ships beginning in 2026. That expansion, which grows the line’s investment to $600 million so far, means it expects nearly 4 million passengers to visit the site annually by 2028, an average of 11,000 visitors every day.

Other U.S. ports visiting the new site are Galveston, Texas; Baltimore; Norfolk, Virginia; Mobile, Alabama, Charleston, S.C. and New Orleans.

Disney pitches authenticity for new Bahamas cruise destination Lookout Cay

Carnival’s plans are just one of many new Bahamas destinations opening around the island nation in the coming years. This summer will see the debut of Disney’s new 900-acre destination Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera while Royal Caribbean has broken ground on what will become the 17-acre Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau.

These augment the existing private Bahamas destinations such as Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at Coco Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay, Disney’s Castaway Cay, Virgin Voyages’ Bimini Beach Club and MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve as well as Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay.

15 Top Adults-Only Cruises for 2025 & 2026

I f your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

The following cruise lines provide upscale amenities, immersive excursions, sophisticated dining options, lively nighttime entertainment and time for relaxation among like-minded – and similarly aged – travelers.

Raw HTML : GTS form Travel

Top Adults-Only Cruises

Viking ocean cruises.

Travelers ages 18 and older are welcome aboard Viking 's adults-only ships, which feature destination-focused itineraries around the world. The line's 11 oceangoing ships carry between 930 and 998 guests (at double occupancy) and offer luxurious, comfortable Scandinavian-style spaces. The line will add Viking Vesta to its ocean fleet in 2025.

Viking's exploration program boasts special access to behind-the-scenes experiences curated for travelers who are interested in history, food, the arts or science. Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a traditional family farm near Bergen, Norway, or spend an evening dining on Chinese specialties at a home-hosted dinner in Shanghai .

In addition to these off-the-beaten-path excursions, guests can visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (Kuşadasi) in Turkey and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece . Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

In addition to its ocean vessels, Viking offers river cruises in destinations around the world – including Mississippi River cruises aboard Viking Mississippi. The line also has two Polar Class 6 expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which traverse waterways from Canada, the U.S. and South America to remote destinations in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Itineraries on Virgin Voyages span destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco, as well as trans-Atlantic crossings. The line will also feature 21 new ports across its global fleet in 2025, including destinations in Iceland, Turkey, Oman, Italy, Portugal, the Cayman Islands and more. Cruise fares cover meals at all the dining venues and basic beverages such as soda, water, tea and coffee. Gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access, entertainment and group fitness classes are also included. While on board, be sure to indulge in a swanky dinner at The Wake and an immersive show at The Red Room, a unique multiform theater at sea.

P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and the line's submersibles for underwater exploration.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including French fine dining at Lumière; innovative Asian flavors at Koko's Asian Fusion; Italian, steak and seafood specialties at Elements; or an immersive dining experience at Chef's Garden @ Epicure. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample craft cocktails or the impressive selection of whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Other onboard activities include getting an invigorating treatment at Senses Spa or just relaxing with Champagne and spectacular views on deck 10 at the Sky Bar.

Scenic's ships sail to destinations in Australia and the South Pacific; Europe and the Mediterranean; Asia; the Americas and the Caribbean; and the polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic.

Disney’s new cruise line private island destination opens this week

On June 6, 2024, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point joins Castaway Cay as a Disney-exclusive island attraction offering one-day excursions with family fun.

The cruise industry overall surged in popularity last year following a rebound from the pandemic.

Cruise Lines International Association captures this growth in its annual  State of the Cruise Industry  report. In its latest findings, cruising surpassed pre-pandemic levels in 2023, reaching 107% of 2019 levels. Those levels include 31.7 million passengers globally, with 18.1 million cruising in North America, Disney Cruise Line’s primary market. 2024 shows more growth, with 34.7 million global passengers projected to sail on the high seas this year.

Disney Cruise Line’s current expansion plans include the addition of four new ships to its fleet between 2022 and 2025 and a new private island destination that opens this summer.

Leaning into authentic Caribbean culture

Disney  selected the Bahamian island of Eleuthera as the home of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Eleuthera sits along the island’s southern shores, and the guests will note Bahamian influences throughout its architecture, dining, and character costumes, among other elements. These influences concentrate around the Goombay Cultural Center. Centrally located at Lookout Cay, the center features local artists and other activities to immerse guests into the Bahamas.

Lindsay Brookshier, content director of  Mickey Visit , shares her thoughts on Disney’s approach to designing Lookout Cay. “They are working to create a destination authentic to the Bahamas culture that showcases the area’s natural beauty. The concept artwork that I have gotten to preview has been stunning. This looks like it will be a fantastic addition to the existing Castaway Cay private island destination.”

Lookout Cay embraces the spirit and culture of the Bahamas, even featuring an array of  bright, vibrant flavors  at its several eateries. In addition to classics like burgers and salads, dining options include Bahamian Pigeon Peas & Rice, Plant-based Island Curry, and Bahamian-style Lime marinated grilled snapper.

Mickey, Minnie, and the rest of the gang will sport new, island-exclusive apparel. Mikkel Woodruff, Editor of  Sometimes Sailing , highlights these as one of the exciting and unique aspects of Lookout Cay. Woodruff explains, “I can’t wait to take photos with Mickey and Minnie in their  colorful cruise outfits  designed by Bahamian fashion designer Theodore Elyett. Only Disney could bring this to the Bahamas!”

Paradise for all ages

Like other Disney destinations, Lookout Cay offers fun experiences and amenities for adventurers of all ages. A day at the private island includes character meet-and-greets and lively entertainment. Lookout Cay’s multiple water play areas, including Rush Out Gush Out Water Play, keep little ones occupied. Two shows — RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration and Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash — blend Bahamian culture with classic Disney entertainment.

Local experts offer guided tours of the island, and bold voyagers can traverse trails and utilize bicycle rental services to trek around Eleuthera. Family-friendly beaches boast beautiful cabanas rentable by those seeking a soothing, subdued stay, whether parents vacationing without kids or traveling solo.

Freelance journalist and theme park expert Megan duBois says she anticipates “enjoying the adults-only spaces, which are a quiet area away from all the controlled chaos of the family beaches.” The adult-exclusive areas of Lookout Cay include a  beach  and separate dining areas.

High expectations from cruisers

Disney first announced Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point in 2019. Anticipation grew as the cruise line industry bounced back following the pandemic.

Sarah Gilliland, founder of  On the Road with Sarah  and Managing Travel Editor for Wealth of Geeks, emphasizes the stiff competition. She notes, “It all sounds good on paper, but the real test will be seeing how the island’s first visitors receive it. So far, it looks a little more exciting than Castaway Cay but not as exciting as Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay. It’s difficult to complete with a water park!”

To impress avid cruisers, duBois says Disney is rising to the occasion. “Lighthouse Point will exceed expectations compared to Castaway Cay and even other cruise line private islands. Disney has learned a lot over the years of operating Castaway Cay, and that knowledge is finally being used by finalizing Lighthouse Point.”

Disney Cruise Line’s initial itineraries  include Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on 3-, 4-, and 5-night Bahamian Cruises out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and 10-night Southern  Caribbean cruises  out of Port Canaveral, Florida.
