Adventures by Disney Announces First-Ever Dedicated Expedition Cruises

Voyages to Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands offer families a unique way to explore some of the world’s most fascinating ecological wonders

GLENDALE, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2021) — Families will journey to some of the world’s most wondrous and sought-after destinations when they set sail on all-new Adventures by Disney Expedition Cruises. With voyages to Antarctica beginning in late 2021 and to the Galapagos Islands in 2022, guests will embark on exhilarating adventures across breathtaking, remote landscapes while enjoying a leisurely voyage with family-focused activities curated by the travel experts at Disney.

Sailing aboard intimate, purpose-built ships specially designed to access remote destinations, guests will discover pristine natural lands and diverse wildlife throughout a broad range of excursions. With nature at the heart of every experience, expert naturalists and Adventure Guides will bring the stories of these regions to life both on land and at sea, connecting families with the ecological wonders around them.

Family Expedition Cruises to the White Continent

With the introduction of the Antarctica expedition cruise, Adventures by Disney now offers family vacation experiences across all seven continents. Scheduled for 2021 and 2022, two 12-day, 11-night Antarctica and Patagonia Expedition Cruises  will sail with PONANT, a leader in luxury polar expeditions.

Following an overnight stay in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the adventure begins at the southernmost tip of Argentine Patagonia, where guests will visit the resort town of Ushuaia, take a scenic train ride and explore the Tierra del Fuego National Park, travel by catamaran through the Beagle Channel and visit the historical settlement, Estancia Harberton. After navigating through the Drake Passage, the journey continues in the awe-inspiring landscapes of Antarctica, where each day brings a new adventure. Guests will embark on daily boat excursions and hike along the continent’s shorelines, catching glimpses of native wildlife like seabirds, penguins and seals in their natural habitat. With offshore activities defined by nature, every wildlife viewing will be unique to the sailing.

Pre-cruise Vacation in Buenos Aires

Travelers can add even more adventure to their Antarctica and Patagonia Expedition Cruise with the Buenos Aires Escape . This four-day, three-night guided group experience will highlight must-see attractions as well as the hidden gems of Argentina’s capital. Guests will enjoy the countryside tradition of horseback riding while visiting a local estancia and also become immersed in the cosmopolitan culture of the “Paris of South America” as they dance the tango and stroll the charming streets of Buenos Aires.

Family Expedition Cruises in the Enchanted Isles

On the Adventures by Disney Galapagos Islands Expedition Cruise , families will island-hop from one extraordinary adventure to the next with five nine-day, eight-night sailings aboard the boutique expedition ship, the Galapagos Legend.

On excursions led by naturalists, adventurers will discover the archipelago’s spectacular vistas and remarkable diversity of plant and animal species, with possible sightings of thealbatross, frigatebird, blue-footed booby, giant tortoise, marine iguana and Galapagos penguin. Trip highlights include snorkelingin turquoise waters inhabited by sea lions, reef fish and sea turtles; hiking across the islands’ diverse terrain; and paddling in transparent kayaks along sheltered coves.

Families will also get a taste of culture in the islands as they try their hand at making fresh sugar cane juice at a family farm, discover local crafts with artisans-in-training at a local bazaar, demonstrate their fancy footwork in a game of soccer and visit a coffee plantation, where the plants are grown in the island’s rich volcanic soil.

Three routes are scheduled for the Adventures by Disney Galapagos Islands Expedition Cruise in 2022.

Departing Feb. 9, the north and south Galapagos itinerary  includes excursions to the islands of San Cristobal, Espanola, Floreana, Santa Cruz, Genovesa and Santa Fe.

Departing March 6, July 10 and Aug. 7, the south and east Galapagos itinerary  includes excursions to the islands of South Plaza, North Seymour, San Cristobal, Espanola, Floreana and Santa Cruz.

Departing Dec. 18, the north and west Galapagos itinerary  includes excursions to the islands of Baltra, Genovesa, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Mosquera, Santiago, Rabida, Isabela and Fernandina.

On all Adventures by Disney expedition cruises, families will relax and play together aboard an intimate expedition ship as a team of Adventure Guides lead engaging programming for adults and Junior Adventurers alike. Disney Just Added a New Arctic Itinerary to Its Lineup of Luxury Cruises

Booking begins opening next week for guests who've already sailed with Disney and general booking opens Nov. 12.

Disney is headed to the Arctic in 2023 on new expedition cruises announced this week.

Beginning in Oslo, Norway, the 10-day, nine-night sailing takes guests to the remote Svalbard Archipelago, which sits in the Arctic Ocean between the mainland and the North Pole.

The archipelago's largest town, Longyearbyen, is one of the northernmost places in the world where people still live. It's best known for its northern lights shows nowadays and has a population estimated to be around 2,400.

And while the sailing season won't be right for northern lights, the cruise itinerary includes lots of opportunities for fjord and glacier spotting as well as the chance to see polar bears, puffins, reindeer, and whales. Daily excursions offer guests several opportunities to get up close to glaciers and explore postcard-perfect fjords.

Disney is partnering with the polar expedition cruise company PONANT on the cruise and plans two Arctic sailings, one in June 2023 and another in July 2023. Guests on the July sailing will have a chance to sketch alongside a former Disney imagineer .

The sailings are set to take place on the Le Boreal, a vessel with a capacity for just 264 passengers. The ship's 132 staterooms and suites are luxury oases complete with Hermes bath products in their spacious bathrooms. There's also a spa, theater, and pool onboard the ship.

Prices for Disney's new Arctic expedition cruise start at just under $12,000 per person. Booking begins opening next week for guests who've already sailed with Disney. General booking opens Nov. 12.

Prefer to swap your parka for a swimsuit? Adventures by Disney also offers a Galapagos Islands expedition cruise, which features warm weather as well as activities like snorkeling and basking in the sunshine. Prices for that nine-day, eight-night trip start at $8,139 for a February 2022 sailing and $7,399 for 2023 sailings.

Adventures by Disney Offering Expedition Cruises to Adriatic Sea in 2024

Adventures by Disney announced an all new expedition cruise in Adriatic Sea setting sail in 2024. Similar to the Adventures by Disney river cruises, Disney is partnering with expedition cruise lines for the sailings instead of one of the Disney Cruise Line ships.

The eight-day, seven-night round-trip Adriatic Expedition cruise is scheduled to sail from Venice, Italy, with planned stops in seven ports in Croatia and Montenegro before returning to the Floating City. The chartered Adventures by Disney expedition voyage is planned for two sailings in 2024 with departures scheduled for June 25th and July 2nd.

Setting Sail on the Adriatic Sea with Adventures by Disney

Families will experience expedition cruising on the luxuriously appointed PONANT ship Le Bougainville, a small, purpose-built intimate ship, specially designed to access remote locations. The ship will sail along the beautiful Adriatic Sea coastline, where guests will be immersed in the culture and stories of the region. Each day will offer new adventures and exciting excursions curated by the travel experts at Disney, including:

• Discovering the islands adorning the Adriatic coast with stops at Korcula to taste the famed Mali Ston oysters or Hvar to kayak along the Pakleni Islands.
• Enjoying delicious food, Croatian wine, captivating architecture and culture unique to the region.
• Biking through vineyards and lavender fields of the UNESCO Stari Grad Plain (also known as Hora or Ager).
• Tasting local delicacies such as Dalmatian Prosciutto, aged by the bura, a northerly-blowing wind common in the winter months.
• Exploring picturesque Boka Bay in Montenegro by catamaran or strolling the cobbled streets of Old Town Kotor.

More Memories, More Magic: Onboard Activities for Everyone in the Family

On board, the fun will continue with themed karaoke nights, game/trivia nights, a talent show and Disney movies. Adults-only activities include cocktail workshops and fitness classes. Junior Adventurers (adventurers 12 years and younger) have their own set of special programming led by the Adventure Guides, such as a “Pirates of the Adriatic” swim party, a pizza party, a Dalmatian Dash scavenger hunt, navigation lessons and more.

FIRST LOOK: New Drone Show Coming to Disney Springs

As you may know, the skies above Disney Springs will come alive with our new “Disney Dreams That Soar presented by AT&T” drone show beginning May 24.  And today, we’re excited to share an exclusive first look at the experience fans of Disney characters will absolutely love! 

The Disney Live Entertainment team behind this limited-time nighttime experience recently got the chance to see all their hard work take to the skies during the first set of creative rehearsals for the show. Today we’re sharing those first glimpses from an off-site property, as well as some exciting new details, about the larger-than-life experience soon to be the perfect complement to an evening at Disney Springs.

“We are presenting Disney characters who have had a dream of flying. Not just the idea that they can fly, but the idea of taking their lives to the next level.” said Show Director, Tony Giordano. “We put a lot of thought in making sure that no matter how old you are, or how much of a fan you are, you’re going to see a character that you love.”

And a lot of characters means a lot of drones. 800 drones to be exact – all working together to create a massive canvas in the night sky. Trust me, nothing can prepare you for the awe of seeing a Baymax nearly twice the height of Spaceship Earth inflate, transform, and disappear right in front of your eyes.

“We were given the assignment to create an experience where you want to just hold the hand of the person next to you,” said Tony. “That’s always echoing in my mind as we work on this show.”

Music plays a big role in that connection. “Disney Dreams That Soar” features well-known and beloved soundtracks in addition to an original song that will inspire you to follow your heart, take a leap of faith, and reach for the stars.

Insider tip: The best place to experience the drones “dancing” to this new soundtrack will be along the waterway in the Disney Springs West Side. Clocking in at just under 10 minutes, the show is a perfect kiss-goodnight to your day of shopping, playing, and dining at Disney Springs, with 2 shows each evening this summer. Also, while you’re out there, keep an eye out for Tony!   

“I can’t wait to stand next to the guests and hear their reactions. That’s my favorite part of building any show because those reactions are why we do what we do. We want them to actually experience magic, and when you see all these drones, to me, you get to see real magic!”

A holiday isn’t a holiday if it makes life more difficult, right? And for many, a cruising trip abroad can feel like a bridge too far.

If you’ve ever gone away and been tutted at or gawked at while enjoying a moment at the bar, you’d probably rather stay home instead.

Well, a number of cruise operators have been thinking about how to make their trips more inclusive and accessible to a wider variety of guests, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Whether it’s gender-neutral toilets or sign language interpreters, we’ve plucked the boats that boast a better experience for everyone from the Sailawaze Excellence Awards .

Virgin Voyages

After a day of sightseeing, what can be more entertaining than a night of drag performance? It’s par for the course at Virgin Voyages, where all staff are encouraged to express their gender identity freely.

The company prides itself on being a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ passengers with its gender-neutral toilets and hospitable atmosphere.

Founder Richard Branson has a long history of supporting gay rights, beginning with legendary Heaven nightclub in London, and the celebrations on his ships ramp up in June as themed parties are thrown and guests are presented with pride-inspired cocktails and on-deck DJs.

Celebrity Cruises

If you thought cruises were only for the silver-haired, you’d be wrong. Celebrity Cruises are a riot of colour, flying every hue of the LGBTQ+ flag – especially in June, Pride Month.

The operation, which travels to every continent, even hosted the first legal same-sex marriage at sea in 2018 and regularly holds gay weddings.

Celebrity Cruises says it promotes diversity among both staff and guests and throws regular LGBTQ+ welcome events to get the party started.

Disney Cruise Line

Family-friendly operators Disney Cruise Line prides itself on making trips accessible to those with additional needs. Guests with disabilities have access to comfortable staterooms and suites, along with a full range of services, facilities, and amenities, including auxiliary aids.

Its liners are also home to specially designed communication staterooms for guests with hearing disabilities, including a vibrating bed shaker under the mattress and an indicating panel with light signals for the doorbell, telephone calls, general alarm and fire alarm.

The ships also provide sign language interpreters for shows and entertainment.

Saga Cruises

If a loud party isn’t for you, over 50s can enjoy a more sedate voyage, with Saga Cruises providing a number of options for guests with mobility issues. A chauffeur service to and from ports is provided as standard on all trips, rooms are equipped with hearing loop systems and hoists are available to help guests in and out of the pools.

Assistance is also provided to those who need help with baggage and large print is provided in the cinema guide and daily paper, alongside Braille playing cards.

A-Rosa Cruises

Meanwhile, A-Rosa Cruises are designed with families and multi-generational groups in mind. Under-15s travel for free and family rooms have been provided so up to five can share a room while they meander along Europe’s rivers, waking up in a different city each day.

Hosts are available to take care of youngsters in the kids club, where children can choose from a variety of activities, including crafting, T-shirt design and face painting while adults can enjoy a relaxing treatment at the spa.

This year, European river specialist VIVA Cruises launched its inaugural LGBT voyage, which took travellers to Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam where they could visit the world’s largest archive of LGBTQ+ history by day and party at the city’s vibrant gay and lesbian bars by night.

VIVA is a member of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, an organisation built to promote equality and safety within LGBTQ+ tourism.
